0:00The following podcast is a dear media production. besties like many of you i sleep at night and there's nothing like a good night of sleep man i just love it especially on a good mattress i hate a bad mattress and hopefully like most of you i like taking care of the planet i love this place i don't think i could live anywhere else you know what i mean but it's disappointing to see most companies don't care about our planet Bummer, right? That is why I'm glad Avocado Green Mattress exists. They combine sustainability, social responsibility, and most importantly, comfort. Not only are they made with luxurious comfort in mind for your family, they're also goals and got certified.

0:42That means their materials meet global organic latex standards and global organic texture standards, which is just fancy acronym speak for the best possible materials you could have in your mattress. Oh wait, you thought these were just made with luxurious materials in mind? Nope. One of my wife and I's biggest concerns when we became parents was finding a mattress that was non-toxic. Well, guess what? Avocado Green Mattress is made, safe, certified, non-toxic. And here's one of the things I love most. They are members of 1 % for the planet. That means 1 % of all mattress revenue goes to environmental nonprofits.

1:20Wow, is that nice to see from a company out there. With code BLF, you save an extra$25 on crib and kids' mattresses on top of their holiday sale. That's an extra$25 off their current sale at AvocadoGreenMattress.com with the code BLF. Avocado, dream of better. We're surrounded by fun-sized candy wrappers. There is a suspicious chocolate smear on the couch that I'm sitting on. And we've officially hit that time of year when our kids are high on sugar and we're just surviving. Honestly, this is Confessions from the Candy Bowl, our very special after bedtime Halloween episode. There's no parenting advice.

2:04There's no Pinterest perfect anything. You're not going to hear a craft from us. You can look that up on Pinterest if you want to. It's just us, me and Tyler, VP Hype Squad, a pile of candy because we deserve that. and the truth about what Halloween really looks like once you have kids. We're talking the candy we steal, the costumes our kids change their minds about seven times, and the parenting hot takes that are about to start fights in the comment section. Plus your real Halloween horror stories, the ones that end in glitter, in barf, or both. So grab a mini Snickers, pour yourself something stronger than apple cider, or don't, some tea, some kombucha, whatever your poison is, and come laugh with us because this is a Halloween episode every parent actually needs.

2:51Welcome to After Bedtime, where the house is finally quiet, but the real noise begins. The thoughts, the questions, the wondering if you're doing any of this right. We're Kristen and Dina, child behavior experts, moms, and co-founders of Big Little Feelings. And we're not here to give you more pressure or perfect parenting energy. Nope. We're here to tell the truth, the unfiltered, beautiful, brutal truth about what it means to raise kids and re-raise ourselves in the process. Because parenting isn't just about sleep schedules and snack hacks. It's about healing. It's about breaking cycles. It's about becoming the kind of adult you want your kids to grow up to be.

3:30This is the place where we say the quiet parts out loud. And we're so glad that you're here. Bubba, what's up, dude? what's up what's up hi i actually have not seen you this morning much i did see you early in the morning like i saw you this morning yeah but it's now like since then i mean it's 11 30 so it hasn't been that long no how are you i'm good okay cool speaking of halloween you know what oh yeah no how are you no okay good if somebody ever actually asks how i am then like organically i think we just have to end the show you know i guess yeah no this breeze over it what were you gonna say over it you know what i was thinking about this morning speaking of halloween tell me do you remember when like looney tunes tattoos were really big yeah actually yeah like looney tunes clothing sure like where bugs bunny was wearing like jinko jeans you know when you started talking i i'm gonna be honest i kind of was like because like i thought it was gonna be a really obscure thing but yes i absolutely know what you're talking about it's still obscure but you know what I'm talking about.

4:30Yeah. They should bring that back. But you know what I noticed because I was thinking about the clothing and I was like, oh, people used to have like Looney Toons tattoos, too. And so like I started looking up Looney Toons tattoos and there's some good ones out there. Is that is that it? Well, you know, and then I found like a subset of tattoos, which are just like gangster Looney Toons tattoos. That's like a whole genre of tattoos when are we doing this like when are you having the time to research this literally while you're doing the intro okay just now just now you are doing that but now we're gonna pivot because i want to talk about pumpkin spice lattes i want to talk about horror movies i want to talk about halloween i want to talk about vibes i want to talk about pumpkin patches you know what i mean i live for this i live for this shit you do this is like you're a seasonal you're a seasonal person You're a seasonal mom.

5:27A seasonal bitch. I'm a seasonal person. I'm a seasonal soul. Goes beyond gender and roles and types. I'm just like deep down. Here's the thing. Have you had a pumpkin spice latte yet? No, I don't like syrups. I don't either. Well, then there you go. I know. That's the end of this conversation. Okay. It's really a shame. I actually don't like any. And this doesn't matter at all. I opened a DM the other day. and it was actually in relation to being in this exact room with you having four beverages the last time i had like a giant water i had a giant okay we all talked about it when i had like four beverages okay coffee matcha whatever and they're back and this how dare you four beverages how dare you four beverages how dare you okay i do literally have four today it's a lot i do have four listen i have my one giant water bottle i have one coffee that i already mostly drank I have my matcha latte that still has ice in it and it's great and then I have a smoothie which is exactly what I said look it's a pumpkin spice protein shake gross okay I opened a dm first mistake and this person wrote this said what's with you Americans and all the big sugary drinks hell yeah that's I love that vibe I love that just straight to it and so like we were just talking about the irony is i don't like sugar or sweetener or pumps in any of my drinks like this is an unsweetened iced coffee this is an unsweetened matcha latte like i am having grass just just like uh what is it what do you wield it what do you do that no but it tastes like it you know what is this what is this hand motion i'm doing grinding yeah you're grinding the matcha and you're just putting a splash of almond milk in there there's no sweetener in there it's unpumped and if anything i don't really like this smoothie because there's a little bit of like stevia in it I don't need I don't need a sweetener.

7:25I'm not a sweetener kind of bitch. No. But I give off, obviously, you know, giant American sugary drink vibe. I guess. I think all Americans give off that vibe, though, to be honest. You think so? Yeah. I don't think Dina gives off that vibe. That's fair. That's fair. Dina's like a no ice, no, you know, like very regimented vibe. She gives off like a like a hot, like a hot espresso vibe, maybe. Right. Very European. Yeah. She's European vibe. Maybe. So we don't like pumpkin spice lattes. I will say I witnessed Dina have a pumpkin spice latte in the airport last week. Wow, that's shocking, honestly.

8:02I know, actually. That's like really shocking. Yeah, and it was like really fun and she enjoyed it. Great. She got it from Starbucks. I made her get it. Well, I didn't make her get it. She was like super down. I was like, this is fun. That's fun. This is fun. That's like a fun whatever day that was for Dina. I know. It was really fun. Before we have to move on because our ketchup is just hanking right now, bud. you got anything got anything else but looney tunes no i only have like looney tunes tattoos there was something else we were talking okay well i do want to talk about scary movies because i can't so halloween movies what's your vibe i i like them i like the classics and but if it's new so i have this thing where you know i like re-watch the same stuff over and over and over because i i don't like surprises yeah i like to know what's happening yep and so if it's like something new that I haven't seen yet.

8:51It's a daytime watch number one lights on who watches things in the daytime. I used to, but now I can't. Yeah. But am I right? So I don't really watch a lot of new stuff. Yeah. Yeah. I was going to watch that new it show on HBO and I watched the trailer and I was like, this is not a nighttime show for me. No, I don't think it's a nighttime show for anyone. I don't really get it. And I want to be like as unjudgmental as possible. Undead. mental dopamine dog it's all about dopamine or adrenaline i don't know whatever adrenaline i don't think it's dopamine i don't think we're releasing dopamine we're releasing adrenaline maybe people like that people like that that's their vibe let people vibe okay what about if it's just like bloody and gory but it's not really scaring you that i don't know this is like a primal thing that scares me this is like why men murder people because they're like into it you know what I mean I think people like like the super gory movies because they like to see like what you can do in movies that's terrifying with like effects I don't think that's why people watch it you don't think so no okay I don't want to judge that many people because I'm sure some people listening like absolutely the poor okay you know who I bet loves like movies like that I bet Dina loves a scary horror movie like that I don't Dina doesn't really watch movies that's true I I wonder actually if she would be down.

10:12Like, I think she'd be very factual about it. You know? Can you be done with maternity leave? And just like, come back? Yeah. We need the answers. Well, favorite Halloween movie, go. It's probably like House of a Thousand Corpses. I don't know what that is. It's like a Rob Zombie movie. Oh, because it's like horrifying? Yeah. I saw it as a child. Yeah. In the movie theaters. How old were you? I don't know. Whenever it came out. Okay. What was that? I don't know. I mean, you don't have to get it exactly right. He's looking it up. He's looking it up. No one's going to ask. 2003 so 16 okay it wasn't a child you were not a child it was scary but you were traumatized like a child i wasn't traumatized i was like holy shit okay you'll like that but the good part about it is that is when i was introduced to america's favorite walton goggins i don't know what any of this means walton goggins i don't know what it means from white lotus the new season oh yeah like that guy sure love that sure okay you're not gonna ask but my favorite halloween movie is Jennifer's body.

11:09Duh. Duh. I mean, it's pretty good. Oh, my God. Megan Fox eating a chicken, you know, and then there's like a dance, like the chicken scene, best scene in cinematic history. Okay. And then they go to like a dance. You know, it's like, it's great. There's a chicken scene and then they go to a dance. Yeah. You know, do you know what I'm talking about? I saw it one time. Okay. Like a long time ago. Well, I saw it many times. And that's it. But my story is actually a childhood story, which is when I was four. Or five, I watched Poltergeist with my older sister, and I have never recovered from the trauma.

11:45I think that might be why I don't really look into mirrors, to be honest with you. I thought maybe I was like, oh, maybe I have a body thing, or not dysmorphia, but just the thing where I don't really see myself. But maybe it's Poltergeist related. Could be. Because I really avoid myself in the mirror. Is it because I hate myself, or is it trauma from Poltergeist? I don't know. I feel like every person has a horror movie they saw when they were a kid. way too young that traumatized them and created like a new phobia for them for sure isn't yours leprechaun mine is leprechaun okay i do that with warwick davis yeah leprechaun yeah the movie yeah scarred me yeah scarred me yeah like i don't feel that i was not afraid of leprechauns till my 20s i'm not even playing no joke you're like at thest patrick's day party in third grade just terrified.

12:32I'm like, nope. Oh, man. I'm not fucking around here. dude. That movie traumatized me. Oh, yeah. No, I mean, Poltergeist literally in the word traumatized, like traumatized. I want to know what other people saw. Yeah, me too. Way too young. I know like Jaws is up there. I think like Halloween. Chucky? For sure. Chucky is terrifying. That was pretty early on for me. Even, this is so dumb. What's the one? What's the one? What do they look like? Furbies? Gremlins? Yeah, Gremlins scared the shit out of me. I think it does a lot of people. I think they consider that a horror movie Do they really? I think so Oh okay well that makes me feel better I'm like terrified No those scenes are hilarious Alright let's go into the episode I mean it's just like this But let's just segue Roll on into it Segway Peloton is shaping the future of fitness With the brand new Peloton Cross Training Tread Plus Powered by Peloton IQ So listen I've been obsessed with Peloton Since the very first version came out Okay in 2020 A little pandy happened That's the pandemic.

This is the only version of fantasy football I will ever participate in. Here are the rules. They have drafts and other things. I'm not going to participate in them I don't really even want to do this but I'm going to here are the rules we each pick five Halloween games is that okay there's other segments I'm more excited to get to but I'm starting with the one because it reminds me a little bit too much of football you know what I mean I'm going to like it it kind of reminds me too much of football so that gives me the ick here are the rules we each pick five halloween candies fantasy football style do you know what that means yeah just pick five candies okay once it's picked what else is there too i don't know because you don't play fantasy football neither do i so i just was making sure if you i don't know whoa dude i was just making sure you knew the rules but all right once it's picked it's off the board forever so you like can't pick what i picked Okay.

19:25All right. That's fine. All right. I'm going to go first. So my pick number one is Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. Okay. It is elite. It is iconic. And if you disagree, you have trust issues. Yeah, I know. I do like Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. But I was thinking about this before today's episode. Okay. You know what used to be really good and they fell off? Reese's Pumpkins. Well, too much. And people love them. Too much peanut butter. Exactly. The ratio. They used to have enough chocolate. Are you picking Reese's Pumpkins? No. Okay, well, what are we doing right now? I was just saying they used to be good, and now the ratio is just not there anymore.

19:59Okay, well, aligned on that. Exactly. What's your pick? Twix. Oh, shit. Big time Twix. Well, that's what I should have led with because it's the best one. The problem with Halloween ones is you only get one. You know what they should do is they should do two mini ones. You get one, but you get more, and then you just take all of the Twixes from the child who doesn't understand. You're just like, you won't like these guys. These ones are spicy. Not the older ones. Not the older ones. but yeah the younger ones i think he could you know pull a little spicy card this is the parent tax like we've done a lot and you know we get 20 i get my manager's cut oh that's twix okay so i have we should be writing these down right yeah we're no way gonna remember there's no you're in charge of writing it down because i'm leading the whole episode all right pause okay pause tyler's wearing socks with perkenstocks today it's a real fall vibe i am wearing the exact same socks because I have started to steal his socks because they are the best socks.

20:54And I am wearing them with clogs. We're just really, really pumpkin spice latte-ing vibe today. I got cold feet, man. Are you ready with your notes app? Ready. Okay, so I am going to go with Snickers. Okay, we got protein. What's the protein in Snickers? Everybody loves protein. I have no idea. Look it up. Crunch. Caramel. You know, next year they're going to have like like the foam on top, like a$15 foam that goes on top of a Snickers, kind of like Starbucks. What? For sure. For sure. A foam that goes on top of Snickers? Well, no. I mean, they're probably just going to have like an extra protein boost Snickers by next year.

21:39Because you said it? No, not because I said it, because that's like what everybody is doing right now. It's protein. Yeah. Everybody's doing protein. You've seen the Starbucks, the foam? You put it. Oh, OK. There's a foam at Starbucks now and it's$15. No, it's not$15. That's an exaggeration. it's a foam at Starbucks and you can put it on top and it gives you 15 grams of protein that's insane isn't it insane proper insane yeah and I really want to try it so that's what I'm saying is like buy next year for sure Snickers protein Snickers yeah and Reese's too probably okay so I'm picking Snickers I feel like we got the protein we got the crunch it's a full meal it's definitely just like it's like the safe choice it's like the cargo shorts of candy you You have everything you need.

22:18Pockets everywhere. Nope. Am I wrong? Write it down. That's why you wear cargo shorts all the time. Well, if I could, I would. It's not in my demographic. I wish I could. You can. You can do anything you want, girl. It's 2025. You're not wrong. Wear cargo shorts. If they made cargo leggings, I would. Damn. You guys taking notes out there? Should I invent that? Yeah. Well, they already have pockets. Just give them some thigh pockets, too. No, I'm saying you have leggings that have pockets, but they're like phone pockets. at the top. More pockets. More pockets. More pockets. More pockets. I love that.

22:51Yeah. Because when you're working out, you're not going to fill all the pockets, obviously. But then, once you leave your workout, and you're just walking around, you could put a car key in there. Pacifiers. Pacifier. Butt wipes. That's a little bit aggressive, but sure. But just, you know, there's so many little, like, you got your chapstick. Just the necessities. I like that. Cargo leggings. Does anybody have a... What would this be? Kirkland. I'll carry those. Kirkland, would you like to... Would you like to do a collab? Costco. A BLF times Costco. Oh my god. Wait. I would love nothing more than this moment.

23:34Nike collabs with Costco. No. Did you see those shoes? Nah. We gotta go Kirkland brand. I don't want to collab with Nike. Kirkland is the Costco brand, by the way. Okay. That's fine. But also like sweatpants, I guess. Cargo sweatpants? No, just I also want to make sweatpants with Kirkland. Let's stick with one item at a time. Let's stick with cargo leggings. Very practical. Should we? Okay, go. Speak. You Americans, you always like your... With your sugary drinks. You always like your pockets full. You love your full pockets. My pockets. And your accessible pockets. You Americans.

24:10I'm going to create my own line of sugary drinks and pocketed pants for Kirkland. Just to spite that one. Their only size XXL and up. Hell yeah. Okay. All right. All right. Next. All right. It's my turn. I'm going to upset some people and I'm going to really like thrill some people right now. Don't say it. Don't say it. Milky Way, baby. Oh, that's not what I thought you were going to say. That's fine. I love a Milky Way. That's fine. I love it. Okay. It's basically a peanut free Snickers. That's all it is. I hate a Milky Way. It's disgusting. Well, that's. Wow. Gross. It's the wrong choice. Just throw a peanut on top of that.

24:43Jesus. Very different. very different oh i've got my next one there's no texture oh i've got my next one already where are we at three and three we're two and two right now so you need number three we really gotta move faster this is gonna be the entire episode we gotta go a lot faster what are we doing okay fine um pick number four three yeah there you go pick number three skittles skittles skittles done because sensory overload is my brand i just want all the colors i want all the flavors and I want them all at the same time. I get that. You know, you probably I was going to say like some people, but like you definitely like separate colors.

25:20Yeah. No, I just want to like throw a bunch in my mouth and just feel that. Just like feel something. Yeah. Throw all the Skittles in my mouth and just like let go. Talk about dopamine. Next. I like to say like separate them, but I like to like pick my flavor strategically. Yeah. I know you do. To make combos. I like combos. I know. Okay. We all know. Literally, we're like, we're going to keep this episode on the rails. Yeah. Nope. Nope. Adjacent. Rails adjacent. There's no rails. My. Rails have been blown off. Go ahead. My next pick. Okay. Is mounds. Ew, dude. Dude, I love mounds. Oh, my God.

26:00When I was a child, I was like, what is this? What is this? Because it's disgusting. But now I'm like, this is heaven. Oh, are you just old now? I'm old. Is it going to hit me soon? I probably not. Maybe I should. because you'll be young forever. But mounds, man, you got chocolate. You got coconut. God, dude. And one singular almond. Whoa. But I like to eat the almond separately. Should I start looking for like a memory care center? Probably. Like is that? Okay. Wow. I love it. But yeah, you have to be pretty old to like those. Really old though. I love them. I think like you're going into butterscotch territory once you're going into mounds.

26:39You're starting. You're approaching. Number four. What do we got? I'm going to go with, this is the last one, right? You said five, but we can stick with four. Okay, let's stick with four because we're just, no. I'm going with Kit Kat. See, I don't trust you on this one. I don't think this is what you want. I don't think this is what you want because I know what your favorite is and you haven't said it. What? Because you're afraid to be judged. My favorite is, first of all, Twix, and then I only like chocolate, so I don't know what you're referring to. Is there a different chocolate one that I'm missing?

27:10You love, and first of all, you pick Skittles. but you yeah well that's just for the chaos of it all you love dots i like dots yes and you find that horrifying but that's not i don't she loves them dots could have been my number five you're right about that i think dots could be a number five i do love a dot that's like i love a dot that's bucket filler okay like what's a bucket filler bucket filler is like you just put it in the bowl to like to fluff to get rid of it to get rid of it no it's just a that's what yours is what What is it? Almond Joy? Is it called Almond Joy or Mounds? Which one's the blue one?

27:43It's the blue one. It's Almond Joy, right? Yeah, it's Almond Joy. Mounds is the dark chocolate one. Yeah, it's Almond Joy. Just pick your last one. You've got to be instinctual. I can't even think of another candy. You've got to be instinctual. I literally can't think of another candy. You have to. I don't do well on the spot. You're doing so great right now. I'm going to look around the room for a candy to pick. Look around the room. Look around the room. Oh, man. Come on. What's in a vending machine that I can think of? What's in a candy bowl at Halloween that you just like toss aside? No. She was free.

28:15No. I know one for you. I know one for you. What? Airheads. You love an airhead. You eat them like at night on a normal night. I love airheads. You love an airhead. They're hard to find. Yeah. You can only get like a five pack, which like sounds, you Americans, you're not satisfied by your five packs of airheads. You need a 30 pack. And like, yeah, I do need a 30 pack of airheads. It is a Tuesday night. I'm tired. I need 30 airheads right now. Don't judge me. Don't give me your European judgment. I'm laughing because he literally will eat 30 airheads. I would. If I could get them, I would. No, you do.

28:57You have airheads. They're at the top of our pantry every night. So those are like little singular airhead bites. And they're not good. They don't taste like airheads. They're not good. Airheads. Okay. Done. We got to move on. If anybody wants to weigh in on who won, that's how we're supposed to judge this competition of whose team won. So send us a DM or I don't know, leave a review, I guess, but only a five-star review. Only five-star. But then tell us who won the candy wars. We really do want to know who won the candy wars. Can you recap it really quick? Like five seconds. Okay. Kristen chose Reese's Buttercups.

29:31Not the pieces. Oh. Too late. Keep going. Too late. Snickers, Skittles, and who was your last one? Kit Kat. Kit Kat. I fucking won, dude. God, I destroyed you. Sucks to lose. And I, Tyler, picked Twix, Milky Way, Almond Joy, not Mounds. Nope. Almond Joy. Yep. And Airheads. Okay, I mean, that's actually pretty strong. It's pretty elite. It's pretty strong. We gotta move on. Yes. Segment number two. Everything our kids ever wanted to be for Halloween. Oh, okay. We don't have enough time, but go ahead. What do you mean? Because there's 2 ,000 things that our children have wanted to be for Halloween.

30:08I loved number one, Lavender Fairy. Obviously. Because I also was a Lavender Fairy. Yes. And it was just so goddamn adorable. So last year, Tyler dressed up with our middle child as a Lavender Fairy. And you got Lavender Sweats. Lavender Sweats. And you can turn your phone off right now. I was updating the list. We don't need the list anymore. We're done. And it was the cutest thing in the world. Lavender Crocs? You know what was the cutest part about it? What? Well, A, the lavender crocs. But the other cutest part about it was B, you got her matching lavender crocs. But C, the cutest part about it.

30:41We're just going through letters now for every sentence gets a letter. The cutest thing about it is that she had these giant glitter fairy wings. And then you took the little teeny tiny fairy wings. Yeah. And you both had like a little crown and a little wand. And it was adorable. It was adorable. But Loki, isn't this also sort of the plight of Halloween? where like our kids this year have been great actually they decided what they wanted they're nine six and three they have stuck with it every other year it changed about 10 times it changes 10 times here is the biggest one there was one year where one of our kids wanted to be a pancake she had to be a pancake had to had to be a pancake and this child is a child who when she needs to have something she needs to have something so scoured the internet no pancakes went out there, found a pancake somehow, some way.

31:33There were adult ones, but none for kids. I found one. Kids don't typically be like, oh, I want to be a pancake. And then the day of, she wanted to be like a baby shark. So we got like a baby shark costume. And then she ended up also wearing just like a random costume, like a Wonder Woman costume that we had. And the pancake was not even worn. The pancake wasn't even worn. And I feel like even at that time, there were a bunch of DMs that are like, why are you buying all these costumes? Babe, so I'm returning them. Like you return them after if they keep changing their mind. You know what I mean?

32:02Yeah. Like as the weeks go on, not afterwards. That's like why when they try to pick something in like June. Yeah, you can't do it. No. Absolutely not. Dude, even September. I'm like, we need to be closer to the finish line. And you cannot change your mind anymore. Two weeks out. Yeah. Two weeks out. We have indecisive kids. Unless this year though. K-pop Demon Hunters, you had to be on that shit early. That's true. We needed to decide in September. and then I was afraid that her costume was not going to come from China. It almost didn't come in time. I know. I know. So this was the exception.

32:32She was like steady though on what she wanted to be. We've had pumpkin kitty because it was like. I loved pumpkin kitty. Jesus. Loved pumpkin kitty. I think it was like she wanted to be a kitty and then she also wanted to be a pumpkin and we were going back and forth and I feel like there was a different costume actually. Maybe like a princess costume. Oh, yeah. We like went out and got a really cute costume. It was from Pottery Barn. It was so expensive. Never again. Never again. And then the day came and she really wanted to be a pumpkin kitty. And luckily, we had a pumpkin costume from when she was one years old and threw that over a dress and then threw on some ears and made her into a pumpkin kitty.

33:20Adorable. You know what I mean? Loved it. Know what I mean? you don't get enough time as a parent to pick the costume for them right you know what i mean yeah because those are like those are the great ones when you just like pick what they're gonna be you mean the ones where you like force them into doing a family costume no like where they're not old enough to pick their costume yet oh there's only really one year for us to be honest with you like we have really opinionated children pumpkin kitty she was two she was two could not be anything else i could that was actually the most devastating because i thought i could like kind to pick for her and get her like most adorable thing with like all the lights on it our kids are way too opinionated they're not doing it they're not doing it it's true that's not doing it what is um your worst costume that you ever had i don't know i feel like i just tucked those away and to just push them deep down oh you don't remember your childhood no do you remember your costumes i remember one year i wanted to be a ninja turtle okay and that was a homemade one okay and there were a lot of non-homemade ones that year but that was when like i forget the store it's kind of like michael's where they like it was like a sewing store where they sold a lot of like plans they were like get this fabric get this much fabric oh wow whatever and you just make it why would you want to do that because like costumes i feel like costumes were very expensive when we were kids really i don't know that feels right because like you know there's no like amazon on or whatever so you couldn't get like a ten dollar costume like you can these days so it was like i'm buying all you would think that would be the expensive thing to make a costume but not back then yeah that was a homemade ninja turtle i guess the ninja turtles were homemade in their own way i don't get it like on the show because they were oh i don't get it they were made in the home but it was the sewer they were no they were made in the sewer okay but turtles don't traditionally live in sewers anyways.

35:14I don't think this is where we need to deep dive into. Okay. My worst costume. I don't even know if I have a worst costume either. I have a best costume, which is every single year as a mom, I wear that union suit, like the skeleton union suit. My favorite. I wish I could wear it year round. No, it's called a union suit. Although now I don't, people just call it like a big, big onesie. It's a big onesie. It's so cozy. It is black, my favorite color. and it has the skeleton bones on it and is gigantic and it has a hood on it and it's like pockets oh my god i love that thing god i love that thing no i get sweaty in those oh my god i love them well this year you're gonna be wearing one okay oh that's right i am i forgot used to you hello you ordered it no i did order it yeah that's true that's true i'm gonna be sully from monsters inc yeah so our little one is obsessed with monsters inc obsessed and he was gonna be Mike Wazowski.

36:07He was. Which is hilarious for a three-year-old to be Mike Wazowski. And we were all set. It was going to be adorable as hell. And he changed his fucking mind. He changed his mind. He changed his mind. Back to the topic. He changed his mind. He's a firefighter now. So now I'm just Sully by myself. But you should be Sully because you're like a big, big, cuddly, adorable monster. You know? So it's like, it's great. It works out. Okay, y 'all. It is the season for Holiday Cards. Now, I'm going to tell you something. I do family holiday Christmas cards every single year. And I have ever since my baby was a little baby, the first baby that is.

36:45And you know what? It's not about perfection because I know a lot of times we're getting all these really perfect holiday cards and like everybody is dressed up and looks nice. And if you do that, you should totally do that. That's amazing. But for me, what it's really about is just memories for my kids. I want my kids to see their Christmas card every single year. Here's what I've used every single year though is minted. True story, before Big Little Feelings has ever Big Little Feelings, I have used minted every single year for my holiday cards. They have the highest quality. I want some finely crafted materials.

37:23I want the premium materials. I want foil pressed printing. I want to have like the newest greatest artist creating the backdrop of it I care a lot about it I'm gonna be very honest and with minted it was pretty easy because everything that I looked at was really cute it's really good quality minted holiday cards make it so easy to start a tradition with your kids letting them see their family photo turned into something beautiful that spreads joy to grandparents friends and loved ones minted makes things easier with free recipient addressing printing all of your loved ones' addresses on envelopes for free.

Just love it thinking about it. But some of you, like my wife, I know that this is just an appetizer holiday. You know what I'm talking about? Those winter holidays that you just can't wait to decorate for. My wife loves the decorative towels.

38:39I use them like regular towels. It doesn't end well. But what does end well is when we use Wayfair.com for our holiday supplies. Wayfair.com literally has everything to get your house stocked up for the holidays. is. Me, I love the lights. I love the twinkly lights. I love the little lights with the bubbles on the Christmas tree, that little bubble ones. Wayfair has everything you need for your house, including the bedding and bath basics, stuff for your kids' rooms, the general home decor, kitchen essentials. It is 5 p.m. and I've forgotten to go to the grocery store again. And now I've got an ingredient house. You know what an ingredient house is?

39:57It's a house with ingredients, but not the things to make something. You know exactly what I'm talking about. But I've realized I've got a secret weapon in my back pocket. Chicken Dunkers Lunchers from Little Spoon. I've talked about them before. They're chicken nuggets, but they're also loaded up with veggies. Veggies that I don't have to peel, chop, or ask anyone to take a bite of. And that's great because I don't have any vegetables right now because I forgot to go to the grocery store. Little Spoon is saving me again. My kids love them. If you are the parent of a child, which you likely are, then you know how much kids love chicken nuggets.

40:34So it's a no-brainer. The best part is the recipes are made with pediatricians and they are packed with hidden veggies. Everything's made with real ingredients so there's no artificial flavors sweeteners or dyes and it's a rare combo of convenient and healthy oh ho ho what's this little spoon is also in target now i actually need to go to target tomorrow for wd-40 because i got a squeaky door and guess what i'm going to be doing hitting up the freezer aisle checking out what little spoon's gotten there today tomorrow i can't wait maybe it's their meatballs maybe it's their sliders i don't know we'll see We'll see what they got because I know every time I go to Target, it's kind of pick through, but I'm hoping they'll have something for me.

41:16Little Spoon is the mealtime hack parents can't stop talking about. Look at me go. Try their no prep nutrient pack meals and snacks for babies, toddlers, and big kids. And these came straight from our followers and they are spicy. Topic number one, how much candy is too much candy on Halloween? There isn't such a thing.

41:58Surprise, trick question. There's no such thing as too much candy. And I don't mean that from a place of like, oh, don't put candy on a pedestal. I do. You put candy on a pedestal? or that's where you come from. That's where I come from. Don't put it on pedestal. I'm like, listen to your bodies. My body is from absolute gluttony. Okay. Just go hog wild. Okay. Just be the worst version of yourself. Okay. Because you only get to do it one time a year. But you're talking about our children. Yeah. You want them to be the worst versions of themselves. Their worst candy eating version of themselves.

42:31Not like in their soul, but just as far as how they eat candy. Sure. Because I want to join them. All right. Mine comes from... Is that like a selfish thing? No, I don't care. We're aligned here just from different reasons, which is that I do believe that when you put candy on a pedestal, then it makes them a little bit like candy monsters. And so when you just let them kind of go wild for one night, it doesn't have as much of a like, oh my God, I have to have this effect. I'll never forget when we went to, you know, one of our firstborns, first Halloween parties, I think she was three and the other kids were a bit older.

43:09And so there's like a hodgepodge of ages there. And I'll never forget that, you know, parents were really controlling the candy intake. And there's no shame against this. I am sure many, many listeners are doing this. And please just do what is right for your family. Absolutely. But what I noticed was, A, they're having a miserable fucking night. A miserable night. Because all of that, because the kids are going around and they're wanting candy. and they had one candy at the Halloween party, pizza party thing that we started at. And so then the whole rest of the night, the kid is just like begging and begging and begging for candy.

43:43And the parent is like, no, no, no. And they're getting like more angry and more upset. And other kids are allowed to eat candy, but they're not allowed to eat candy. It's just like, is it worth the pain? First of all, second of all, our kids was like the only kid who wasn't necessarily obsessed with eating every single piece of candy that she got because she kind of listened to her body. She had a piece of candy at the thing and then she had another piece of candy and then it was more about the joy of just running around and getting more candy because she wasn't so... It makes you so much more obsessive when someone says no to you.

44:18You're like, well, now I definitely want it. This is like full circle breaking the cycle moment because I, in fact, am a candy monster now and had candy on a pedestal. So I'm the one that's like just going nuts. Yeah. You can't stop yourself. Whatever. Yeah. Our kids are just like, my body's full. Literally every time. Like candy, you know, cake at a Halloween or cake at a birthday party. They're like, no, thank you. I'm full. Crazy. Proud of them. But when you were a kid, you were very modified. I didn't really get candy. Yeah. So you would go crazy. All I wanted was Gushers as a child. Gushers?

44:55Yeah. Besties, just let your kids have Gushers. Or they'll grow up to be candy monsters. Candy monsters. No regulation. None. 30 airheads at a time. Disgusting American quantities of candy. We don't have such things. Why do you like big sugary drinks, you Americans? That's why we do not have such holidays. What if she was just from Canada? That's a good point. We're being kind of like. I'm just assuming she was European. Yeah. Well, I don't know. Could have been from anywhere. It's true. I can't remember. I don't remember what her name is. I blocked her. I don't blame her. It's disgusting. OK, we have a few listeners who weighed in.

45:34So Amy says, let them eat as much as they want for 24 hours. And then it magically disappears. Love that. Dylan says, I let them keep five pieces and donate the rest to, quote unquote, the candy fairy, a.k.a. me. I have seen this around quite a bit. I think we even have a friend who did this and wanted us to do it because she's like, let's do it together. and I'm like no. But it's something like they're allowed to have just a few pieces of candy and then they have to donate the rest of them. I've heard that. If that's your thing, go for it. You're trying to be non-judgmental but you can just be honest.

46:10Honestly at this point in life, I don't care what people do. I don't care what people do either. You can throw it in the trash in front of them for all I care. I've seen people that are like I'm going to advise you not to do that. I wouldn't do that. I wouldn't do that but you can. I like the like idea of like oh like after Halloween being like you know you can have two or three pieces in a night you know in the afternoon and when it's gone it's gone because there's always like the the like gobstoppers and things like the dots left that nobody wants. I knew it. I told you. Okay. But I you know in my opinion I don't love the candy fairy idea because again you're going to turn your child into the Tyler someday be like the monster and those kids worked hard for the candy.

46:52And when you take it off a pedestal, like our kids, Halloween candy last all the way through Christmas. Like it just sits there. It just sits there. I mean, it's basically for me after the first week. I agree with that. Carla writes candy is currency. I trade Snickers for chores. I'm down with that. I like that. I'm going to stay out of it. That one. OK, my official take is if you micromanage every Skittle, they never learn to listen to their body, which is, you know, our main goal as parents is letting them learn to listen to their bodies. So my professional opinion, let them crash if they even do.

47:29And that's the best biology lesson that there is. You can point it out. You can say, oh, your tummy kind of hurts. You know, that's what happens when we eat too much candy. And it may also not happen if you kind of loosen up the reins and make it a little bit less of this like foreign shiny object. they may start to actually listen to their body and they're not going to crash themselves out and i'll let them do that with anything when you talk about like i'll let them get sick off of it one time one of them was eating pineapple i was like you're eating a lot of pineapple you're gonna upset your stomach and they were like nah dude that's how our kids talk to me nah dude i was like all right and then she got a stomach ache because she ate too much pineapple the little one technically says bra she does say bra now he oh the little little one little little one says brah yeah they both say brah huh yeah let's go to you listen brah listen brah i'll tell this story our little one actually also says like dude calm down and that's because when the kids have a hard time just so everybody here knows that in the households of big little feelings where all feelings are okay sometimes we have a hard time as parents some people that may be sitting right across from me have a hard time with their children's big feelings and we're also not all perfect and it's totally fine because this is not the worst thing you can possibly do but some sometimes some people will say to our children dude it's not that big of a deal dude calm down dude calm down which is not the best thing to say that's sure which part of it it just comes out And so now our middle child was having a hard time.

49:08And our two-year-old at the time walked up to her and said, dude, it's not that big of a deal. And I was horrified. And I was amazed. One of the best moments of my life. Oh, my God. Because A, I've worked really hard and you have worked really hard. And then B, we've had so many experiences where our children are usually the children who walk up to other children and they go like, it's okay to be scared. I'm right here with you. Your feelings are okay. Like they say the things that we emulate. And this is really the first time that it was very clear. And he's just like, dude, it's not a big deal.

49:47Stop crying. It's so funny though. I know it's not good. I know it's not like ideal, but it's funny. Let's end on something sweet. What is your favorite Halloween memory that we've ever had as a family? Chewbacca family. Oh, shit. I forgot about Chewbacca family. One year, our oldest at the time. I mean, she's still the oldest. She's still the oldest. Our oldest. She's no longer the oldest. But when we had just the two and the second one was a baby, our oldest was like, I want to be Chewbacca for Halloween. And we were like, okay. We were like, you know what? Why don't you pick out your sister's costume too?

50:25Do you want her to be like R2-D2 or like Princess Leia or whatever? And she goes, Chewbacca. Because she's three, by the way. She's three. and the baby is like six months. No, she's a year old, right? Yeah. We come around that year. Yeah. So she was one. She was a baby regardless. 10 months old. Sure. Anyways, she picks Chewbacca for her too. And I was like, that's adorable. So why not? And we're like, okay, what do you want me and mommy to be? Yeah. We're like, hey, can we be like Princess Leia? Can I be Han Solo? Yeah. No. Chewbacca. Chewbacca. We're like, okay, for like me, right? And then mom, what do you want her to be?

51:00Chewbacca. And we're like, all right. why not you know yeah so we were all chewbacca family of chewbacca family of chewbacca family technically a family of wookies if you want to be technical adorable but yeah we were all wookies and it was incredibly adorable incredibly adorable loved it the pictures are phenomenal especially the baby the baby's adorable sitting in a bunch of pumpkins oh my god and she was adorable this was also the year that every single person in her preschool was a princess so all every single other little girl was a princess which there's nothing i mean she's been princesses too but it was hilarious to see all princesses and they took a picture of like all of the girls in the class together and then our child with the full mask by the way the full mask and just like it was amazing that was awesome amazing i love that was a good one what about you i think that my my favorite memory is still last year it's the lavender fairy and you guys are matching and it's so cute and so ideal.

51:59And then the little guy was a cow. And then the oldest and I were vampires together. So that was fun. So we got to match and be vampires. That was a good Halloween. It was a really, you almost said Christmas. I did. Yeah. That was a good Halloween. What year is it? You know, what Halloween? It's about to ramp up. I was talking to my doctor. Up. I was talking to my doctor and he was talking about a trip he was taking. Okay. Because he's a doctor. He's going to Finland. Of course. Why? I don't know. It feels like a trip a doctor would take. It feels very like, sophisticated okay Finland feels like a sophisticated trip really yeah big time okay anyways he was like oh like have you heard about like what to do there and I was like yeah like I've heard there's like great hiking and like outdoor stuff and I was like what are you guys gonna do and he was like well I think we're gonna like go dog sledding and I was like it's winter because you're going in November I truly blew my mind and he was like yeah I was wondering what you were talking about about like hiking or like going to like nature walk or whatever so i truly have no concept of time it's cool being in california because we have no concept of time i don't think that's it i think it's straight up that i truly i have a really hard concept of time it's wild to me

53:14wild am i a time traveler is that what it is no i'm not i just have a problem with time this could be christmas tomorrow and i would have no idea speaking of final question is nightmare before christmas a halloween movie oh because that's a fave it's a halloween movie you watch it for halloween i feel like you watch it for christmas no nobody watches it for christmas you watch it for halloween i don't think that's true i think people watch people do not watch it for Christmas. I think it's a Halloween movie, but you could watch it for Christmas. Absolutely not, because there's too many Christmas movies.

53:52There's a plethora of Christmas movies for kids. I don't think there's too many. I think there's just enough. It's just enough, and we could use more. But there's not a whole lot of Halloween movies for kids, because hopefully they're not watching Thrashers. Is that a movie? Is Thrashers a movie? No, it's not. What's my thinking of? Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Our kids have watched that only three times. But you know what I do love? Ernest Scared Stupid. I'm trying to find an Ernest movie for them. I think Ernest Goes to Camp is probably the most suitable. I'm still not over the joke that you just said.

54:26And then also, I don't care about Ernest. What joke did I tell? That they've watched you, Texas. Where are you? What are you doing? No, they haven't seen that. We've had too much candy sitting here. I feel sick. I love candy. I'm going to go home. I'm not going to go home. I'm going to go on three more phone calls and then record another podcast. You're going to go home. and I'm ready to wrap this up. Wrap it up. Okay, wrap it up. Wrap it up like a Snickers. So, A, besties, what do we want to hear? We want to hear who won. I do want to hear who won fantasy football. And really be objective here, not based on personality because everybody loves Tyler, and really go with who won the Candy War.

55:01You know what I mean? Like who has the best lineup? What was the other question? Oh, is Nightmare Before Christmas a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie? Or both. Is that an option? C. Sure. All of the above. mark D on the Scantron you know what I'm saying I do happy Halloween good luck out there stay safe have fun glow sticks we didn't even talk about that get some glow sticks and to the parents eating their kids candy in the dark we see you hey if you are doing a roomie braid for Halloween this year godspeed good luck Me too. We're in this together and it does not need to be perfect. You're doing great.

55:47Your kids won't remember how perfect Halloween looked. They'll remember how it felt. So cheers to the imperfect costumes, to candy you don't share, and to remembering the real treat is that we're all doing our best. Happy Halloween, friends. Happy Halloween, guys. Happy Halloween, friends. I'm so proud of you guys. Halloween's the best. Dude, I'm stoked for Halloween. Just have such a good-ass time out there, guys. Amp. I'm so stoked for you guys. Run in the streets. So proud. No, don't do that. I am. Oh, you got reflective? Yeah. Goodbye. Bye. Bye. Bye. Thank you.

Grab a mini Snickers (and maybe something stronger than apple cider) because this is Halloween, Big Little Feelings style. 🎃 In this hilarious, no-filter episode, Kristin and Tyler spill their Confessions from the Candy Bowl: the candy they steal, the costume chaos, and the hot parenting takes that’ll definitely start fights in the comments. From kids who change costumes six times to parents who just can’t pretend to like candy corn anymore, this is the messy, magical, meltdown-filled truth about Halloween with kids. You’ll laugh, you’ll cringe, you’ll maybe find a M&M in your couch cushion. Because real parenthood? It’s a mix of magic and meltdown, and that’s what makes it perfect.
