In short
Google’s newly launched “Pix” (workspace AI image editor) aimed at competing with Canva, with granular editing like selecting elements in an AI-generated design, plus features such as upscaling to 2K/4K and auto-cropping for web.
Guests
Jaden and Jamie (co-hosts).
Guest backgrounds
Jaden runs/markets an app and tests ad creatives; Jamie has used image generation tools (mentions recent use of Claude and ChatGPT’s image editing features).
Key claims
Google’s distribution and integration with Google Docs/Slides/Sheets could make Pix a “no-brainer” for creators; Pix may be more reliable than ChatGPT for precise edits; Canva’s export/background-removal strengths remain a benchmark.
Notable examples
AI-generated event posters; editing a hot sauce poster by clicking the hot sauce element to change it; removing backgrounds and resizing for logos; ad workflow using competitor Instagram screenshots, then regenerating and fixing one imperfect element.

They have launched, as of today, something called Pix, which is a workspace AI image editor targeted at Canva.
0:40So Canva has been, for many years now, in my opinion, one of the top just graphic design tools out there. They have a really great free model. I personally pay$20 a month for it. I think they have a lot of great features that enabled me to delete my Adobe suite, which I'm very thankful for. But now Google has their own version. So I think it's about time for one of these bigger companies to come along and clone Canva in a better way. And I think Google may have done that. So I haven't actually demoed it yet, so I'll have to update you on that. But I know Nano Banana is a really fantastic image generator.
1:22So if they pair that with some of their other tools in the Google suite, I think this could be something quite powerful and something that everyone will end up using. Some of the features that I really enjoy just off the top are that they are claiming they're going to be able to upscale existing images to 2K or 4K, do auto crops for web. So there's just lots of really useful tools built in and it looks pretty solid. So, Jaden, what have you heard about this? Yeah, the thing that's really interesting to me is it feels very much like like ChatGPT's image generator already has a lot of the features that are that are here.
2:01It's not perfect. I think they actually have a long ways to go. I will frequently find myself sort of frustrated trying to edit something inside of ChatGPT and it doesn't go just how I want it to. So I think Google has hopefully the power to make something happen. They do have a massive distribution as far as the software companies that they integrate with. So being something like Canva isn't very far off for them. What they're currently doing in a lot of these cases, though, is like you're able to go generate an image with Nano Banana or Gemini, which people are used to. And that's just like going and generating it with ChatGPT.
2:34And then you click on that image. And in their demo, they're showing a lot of ways that you can go and adjust that particular image. In some cases, it's like adjust the lighting, although that just feels like what you do with chat GPT. But in other ways, you actually can click on specific elements. So one thing that I thought was interesting that from their demo is they had like they generated a poster, which by the way, whoever invented these AI generated like event posters, they have absolutely plagued my like every, every organization inside of my church, like every time they're like, there's like a church barbecue it's like always this like crazy ai generated poster and it's like there's like a kid's activity it's like crazy ai generated poster even baby showers dude like everything is ai generated posters these days on chat gbt um which drives me sort of crazy but what i do like that they're doing here is beyond just being able to one shot it because sometimes there's a typo or sometimes something looks a little funny or just a little off you can go and click on any of the elements inside of that let's just use the poster example right like a poster for like hot sauce, you go click on the actual image of the hot sauce and tell it to just change that element.
3:42What's interesting is like ChatGPT already has a variation or like a version of that where if you generate like an image on ChatGPT, you're able to select like a part of that image and get it to be edited or get it to like update that little element. Have you done this much with ChatGPT, Jamie? I have actually. I just recently discovered it in the past couple of weeks as I took some time off from chat GPT, wasn't doing much image stuff. I was just mostly using Claude. But yeah, they have a, they've kind of updated their image generation where now at the top you have, you can do background removal, you can erase certain elements, you can resize it, which is really useful for logos and things.
4:25But then also there's just a plus button and you can comment and you can put a tag on a certain part of the image and, and make changes. So I think that's pretty useful. It's not as intuitive as I'd like it to be like Canva, where you could just like click and drag different things. But if you could have a hybrid between what OpenAI has going on and Canva, I think that'd be sweet. A hundred percent. And it's like the tech, like the technical capabilities are 100 percent there. Like I think of like on iPhone, if you're looking at an image and you click and hold on like a person, it selects around that person and it can have it remove the background.
5:02it can pull that person out and essentially it turns that person into an element it'd be really so like and that technology has been around for a long time that's nothing like new or super fancy but i think that capability is what google's bringing probably what open ai is missing a little bit it'd be really nice if you could just select and hold on an element inside of an image inside of uh chat gpt that you're trying to generate it could highlight it and you could pull it out and um maybe manipulate it or change the background or just edit that element so this is what Google's getting at. One thing that I will say I do like that Google's doing with this whole new picks thing is that they're really going after like a software layer.
5:42Like they have the underlying AI model that makes this really capable, but they're going after like Canva, which is another big company. And the reason why I like it, or I don't know if I like it, the reason why I think it's interesting is they've gone beyond just trying to optimize the models. I actually think it probably puts them in a weaker place, but they know they have a lot of distribution. And so I think probably for Google, this makes a lot of sense because they already have stuff like Google Docs and Google Sheets and Google Slides. And so it's like, you know, you're making assets and editing stuff that go into there.
6:11And so anyways, I do think this is kind of a no brainer as far as a place that I would expect to see them in. I'm in ChatGPT right now. I just generated like a barbecue poster, like I was mentioning just for fun. And they do have a lot of cool stuff. One of them, I didn't know they I didn't realize they had this, but have a remove background layer, which to be fair, is probably 99 % of what I do on Canva is upload images and remove the background. Yeah, thing that like, it really wouldn't be very far off for them to just clone Canva. I know chat chaps work closely with Canva. So I wonder if that's why they wouldn't.
6:44But yeah, you can click on any image, you can leave like a comment of something you want it to do, like, you know, change, you know, if I had it say 6pm, I could say change to 7pm. And then I could, you know, leave that and I could leave notes all over it and then click send and it would regenerate the whole the whole thing. So like there's a lot of different things you can do with their editing layer. They have like an erase feature where like if you want to remove something from it, you can just click erase and kind of highlight and remove. So I feel like they still have a lot of the you can resize it to as well.
7:18So I feel like they have a lot of the same features that Google might have. but Google just is kind of releasing like their own platform or their own brand where ChatGP is like, no, we just do image generation. These are just some tools you can use to help enhance it. Maybe ChatGPT should make like a more focused portal on some basically like a Canva kind of clone and add a few more features like that. It's not a big deal if they don't. They just have to know that people are going to grab the assets that are created inside of ChatGPT and just go port them over to Canva. Like I, you know, it doesn't have all the editing capabilities.
7:51So I'm going to generate my first pass here and then I go move it over to Canva after. Yeah. I mean, another useful thing I think Canva has is its export capabilities. You can export a PNG with a clear background or you can export it to be certain quality and size for whatever you're using for. So, yeah, it'd be nice to see something a little bit more robust. Now, as far as side hustlers, people who are trying to make money, one of the topics we've been covering recently in the school community is actually running Facebook ads. Jayden has been experimenting with this for his app. So Jayden, maybe you could tell us, AI Boxes is that by the way, but maybe you could tell us a little bit about how something like the Google Picks tool could come in handy because I know you're doing lots of different creatives targeting lots of different types of people.
8:39Do you see yourself using a tool like this? Yes, actually that's a That's a really good point. I think that using something like the pics would be fantastic because when you're doing the ads, typically what my strategy will be is I'll go find... There's a bunch of Instagram companies, but you could go just find your competitors as well. But there's a bunch of influencers on Instagram that will just say, here's 20 different ad formats that work really well and they just show screenshots of the ad format. So I'm literally sitting there, I watch their 20 second video and I just take 20 screenshots in it of like the winning ad formats.
9:15I upload those to ChatGP and just say, recreate those. But for my company that does XYZ thing or for my product that does XYZ thing, I can use the same prompt in that screenshot and it will generate them. Inevitably, what happens in all of these is that there's just like one little element or one little piece that I don't quite like that isn't perfect. And I have to go and change it. And so using something like Pix where you can like click on the element and it is going to go and edit it correctly, I think would be a big win. Of course, you can do a lot of that with ChatGipty. I just don't feel like the granular editing tools like always work.
9:48Like sometimes I'm like remove this thing and then I hit go and it doesn't remove it. So if Google is just more reliable, I think that they could win just based off of reliability and they could be a really good tool. But either way, ChatGipty is pretty good at this. Google might just take it to the next level. Absolutely. Well, hey, if you got any value out of this episode, we would really appreciate a rating or review. wherever you're listening.
