In short
Meta/Instagram will throttle the reach of AI-generated profiles (synthetic personas) that don’t properly disclose they’re AI, aiming to reduce deception and reward authenticity. Hosts discuss the current AI influencer business, whether the crackdown will end it, and how creators may adapt.
Guest backgrounds
No guests. Hosts are Ryan and Jamie.
Key claims
Instagram isn’t banning AI image editing or AI-assisted captions; it targets accounts where the entire persona is an AI character without disclosure. Reach/income may drop rather than accounts being removed. High-quality content may still succeed; deceptive “real person” claims should be suppressed.
Notable examples
A viral AI video (70M+ views) about burying an airplane fuselage into the ground as a bunker; a detailed prompt for an “educational AI avatar” (middle-aged intellectual man) and workflows using tools like Higgs Field/Nano Banana Pro.

Meta has announced that Instagram is going to throttle the reach of AI-generated profiles if they're not properly disclosing themselves. There's a lot happening here, and there's a bunch of people that have created entire businesses out of these AI influencer businesses. So we want to talk about the state of the AI influencer business, where it's at today, and what some of these updates would mean, if they're a big deal, if they're not a big deal, some of the limitations here.
1:24Before we get into all of that, I wanted to mention that every single week, Jamie and I have a school community that we post in how we're growing and scaling businesses and different side hustles we're doing with AI. Today, I made a post about how I made$2 ,900 from AI-generated music royalties last month, and I break down some of the strategies I'm using, some of the lessons I learned, and some of the things I would recommend doing. I have a handful of different platforms that I use that I post music on, and a lot of this is completely AI-generated, so I do a lot of relaxing piano music, or it's AI-assisted, so I'll do things with like, where it'll be like a meditation or have AI generated meditation music in the background as my actual voice.
2:05There's a bunch of different strategies there. If this is interesting to you, go check out the AI hustle school community. We also have dozens of other different side hustles and businesses that we recommend. And we show you the actual numbers, metrics, tools, breakdown, how we actually make it happen. So if you want to do it, there's kind of a blueprint over there on the AI hustle school community. All right, let's get back over to what's happening with Instagram. Jamie, have you heard or talked to anyone that's actively doing the AI influencer business? Or is this something like, do you know what I'm talking about when I say that?
2:35Yeah. So in case you're wondering what that is, if you're listening, we're not talking necessarily about editing images with AI and posting it or making your captions with AI, things like that. Because according to Instagram, that's still going to be allowed. But this would be for someone whose entire persona or account is an AI character. And so this is a pretty big, pretty big business. If I'm being honest, people are making a lot of money with this and they're fooling a lot of people, even though people's eyes are. Yeah. So even though people's eyes are becoming more aware of what's AI, it's also harder, getting harder and harder to detect over time.
3:17So I think we've covered on this channel before, but people would do like, uh, AI rage bait, basically like, um, trying to make you really mad or feel pity somebody, but it's not even a real person. So it's, uh, yeah, it's, so those types of videos, they get the, even if they are AI and people know they are, people still watch them and they get millions of views. Like I was just looking at Instagram search and I found a video, one of the top videos that had like over 70 million views and it was entirely it was like they buried this airplane fuselage in the ground and turn it into like this bunker but it was entirely ai yet it still got a crazy amount of views and probably made the person you know hundreds if not a thousand dollars you know it's absolutely crazy yeah we've talked about before especially on the podcast i think in our the school community um about this side hustle where you're essentially posting yeah stuff that goes viral and facebook has a very good monetization program different platforms monetize tiktok has a good monetization creator program i think instagram less but meta definitely does so you get paid when things go viral on meta and there's a way to make all of your content automatically um you know whenever you post on instagram automatically go to meta so a lot of people are doing this there's one guy in particular that he's made a lot of videos about this over on YouTube.
4:39And like, just so you guys get an idea of like the prompts that people are using to create these quote unquote AI influencers, this, this one guy digital income project. This is his prompt. It says create an educational AI avatar for Instagram of a middle aged intellectual man wearing thin rectangular glasses with neatly styled salt and pepper hair, sharp facial features, warm brown eyes, calm, thoughtful expression. It goes in very deep depth. It's like place him in a refined study or modern library that the you know environment he goes way in more depth by the way if you're watching on um on video which spotify and apple both have video options on our podcast apple would just add it you can you could see this screenshot it if you're doing the side hustle but i'll just break down um but he also says things like make the image hyper realistic and 4k with highly detailed skin texture frame the shot eye level at a close-up composition right so you go from everything from describe the person describe the setting describe the quality and then describe the angle of the camera.
5:37And you can get really hyper-realistic stuff. A lot of people are using Higgs field to generate the videos for this, but even Higgs field is using like Nano Banana Pro for the image generation. You can then turn it into like, you can use generated image, you can turn it into a video. So there's a bunch of different like strategies that you use for this. They're very hyper-realistic. A lot of people when they're making videos, they'll generate like an avatar, like a person, and they'll get it to generate an image of them in like 10 different angles and they use that to go and generate the video.
6:07They can use the different angles to feed it in to the video. But yeah, people are making a lot of money from these kind of like AI generated Instagram videos. But Instagram is cracking down on this. So Jamie, want to tell us a little bit about what the crackdown looks like? Yeah. So basically they are, you know, they're trying to minimize people just completely making fake accounts and they're, they're more cutting the distribution. So basically if you, you're not going to be, if you are, have a synthetic persona you're going to see a distribution cut. So it's not that they're outlying it. It's just that they're going to, you know, reduce your reach.
6:53So yeah, they're trying to, yeah, mostly just not give these people as much of a platform, as much income because they want to reward authenticity. So they've also made a bunch of other changes recently with Instagram to try to combat negative press. They have like a teen safety backdrop now they're rolling out where, you know, kids can only use it for less than two hours, I think two hours a day max and not at night and all this kind of stuff. So they're, you know they're trying to anytime there's like a negative press or like something coming out they're trying to reduce the the bad press so which I think they're doing pretty well so far but Jane do you think that means this stuff will go away or do you think we'll still see a lot of AI generated video the thing that's interesting to me there is an article that came out a while ago that kind of outlined this but like meta was making their own native like AI influencers and a a lot of people were like kind of mad about it.
7:56But it was like a, it was like a funny thing where they were like making their own and they were like using like our AI tools, yada, yada. So I don't know where it will get to. I think at the end of the day, if it keeps people engaged, if people don't feel tricked, if they like the content, if they like the quality, then I don't think it was going to get as demoted. It's interesting if they're paying a little bit less for it. But it's interesting if like the marketplace is doing that, because I think at the end of the day a lot of like people will um will you know like pay like vote with their dollars or vote with their attention where like i don't want to watch ai generated stuff all day i want real humans and um yeah i might get tricked and see like a ai generated thing and like whoa that's crazy and then i realize it and and i'm like oh whatever and i like move on so hopefully algorithmically they can suppress stuff like that if someone feels like tricked and it's like you know deceptive and it says this one thing, but it's not like, hopefully the algorithm, they can build an algorithm that suppresses that kind of content.
8:56I don't know if they necessarily even need to pay them less if the algorithm properly suppressed it, right? Like, like, I watched something I don't enjoy that I watched that. Please give me 10 seconds of my time back. Facebook should have a good algorithm for that. And if they do, I think they'll solve a lot of their problems with this, a lot of this AI influencer stuff. If it's really high quality, I mean, way before ChatGPT existed, there have been AI generated influencers. Really what it was, was it was like basically like a video production company or people that knew that technology were just making like animated people as high quality as possible.
9:29But like, this isn't a new thing. This goes back quite a ways. And so some people enjoyed following those anyways, because it was like interesting to watch and see what people are doing. So if it's something like that, it's fine. If it's something that's like deceptive, like says you're a real person, but you're not, which is what they're getting at, by the way, the big crux of all of this is that Instagram is going to throttle it if they don't have the disclosure. So as long as you have proper disclosure and people know, I think that's perfectly fine. I don't think it needs to do anything if you're not disclosing it.
9:58Yeah, I think there should be a throttle if I'm being honest. Yeah. And I think this would be a bummer to someone who would was trying to scale their own content, you know, because what a lot of people I've seen do is like they'll have their own, like do their own content, but then to scale it, to be able to post two to three times a day that the algorithm requires, you have to, they would have AI generate the other content. So it's still their likeness, but it's not quite, not quite the same, but almost undetectable, especially with some of those tools like Higgs Field. But now it sounds like that's not really going to fly anymore.
10:37So that's kind of a bummer for those people as well. Yeah, some of the scaling stuff. We talked about this in a recent podcast episode, but it's like when you use yourself as the main character, maybe you take a real picture of yourself and then you have AI go and enhance it. Then all of a sudden, the whole thing's labeled as AI, even though it started out as a real image. I'd be curious if this happens with video. I've seen a lot of people that are using AI to help them scale the content that they produce. At the end of the day, if it's high quality and people like it, I think you'll be fine.
11:06if it's low quality and people get annoyed by it one way or another. Even if you find a little loophole to get a whole bunch of views today, the algorithm is going to shut it down. People are going to shut it down. The platforms are going to shut it down. So just try to make the highest quality, genuinely useful content. And probably having a real human is going to have a higher amount of value going forward into the future. Absolutely.
