In short
The episode discusses OpenAI’s first AI hardware: a “keypad for AI agents” that’s positioned as a novelty/test run rather than a revolutionary device. Key features mentioned include an approve (checkmark) and disapprove (X) button for AI outputs, a push-to-talk/voice button for voice-to-text, and customizable short keys. The hosts argue it could speed multitasking by letting users switch between projects and possibly reduce reliance on keyboard/mouse and web UI. They also speculate on OpenAI’s “second device,” described as a robotic, moving “fancy Alexa” speaker that may integrate with emails/digital life and use MCP-style connections to control software.

Track your listeners, see where they're from, and start earning from ads like this, even with just 10 listeners a month. If you've been thinking about starting a podcast, this is your sign. Start free at RSS.com. open ai is officially launching their their first piece of ai hardware and it's kind of funny because we've seen many ai hardware devices over the years none of them feel like they have stick stuck all of them have flopped this one isn't uh ai hardware in the way you might imagine but and i actually kind of love it if i'm being honest so i want to get jamie's take on this jamie have you seen pictures of it yet i haven't seen pictures of it yet but if you are uh watching this episode, you can see it is a keypad for AI agents and it looks pretty cool.
1:05It looks, it looks kind of retro, but in a cool way. I think it, I'm very interested to hear about some of these features. I haven't even, I haven't even researched this at all. So I'd love to hear what you've heard about it, Jayden. Okay. So before we get into that, I wanted to mention if you have ever wanted to grow or scale your business using AI tools, we would love to have you as a member of the school community. For this month, for the rest of the month, the school community is free to join. In the past, it's been$20 to$50 a month, depending on what promotions we're running. But right now, it is free to join.
1:40There's over 500 members in the school community. And we're all talking about how we're growing and scaling our businesses. Every week, Jamie and I drop a video and we do a live stream, which is free for everyone to watch the live stream when it goes up. And we break down what we're doing to grow and scale our businesses. This week, I did a whole video explaining how I was able to get Facebook and Facebook ads completely automated using Claude. I show you my workflow. I show you my prompts, my tools, how I'm able to generate ads, how I'm able to get the best strategy, my landing pages, all of it.
2:12It is incredible. So if you want to check that out, it is linked in the description. The AI Hustle School community. It is$19 a month if you want to get access to the entire catalog of videos of everything we've recorded, all of the past stuff we record every single week. but you get five videos for free when you join and you get to see all the live streams every week for free and be part of a great community where you get advice from over 500 people so the thing that i'm excited about with this um hardware though coming from open ai i've seen a lot of people make jokes about very similar type of hardware so i think less than open ai kind of coming out with like a blockbuster banger of like this is the greatest hardware ever i think a lot lot of people buy this as a novelty thing.
2:53To me, this feels kind of like a test run because we know that OpenAI is working on some real serious hardware with Johnny Ive from Apple. Apple's currently suing OpenAI because apparently when Apple hired Johnny Ive or when OpenAI hired Johnny Ive over to their company, you know, he previously designed the iPhone, they hire him over and they hired over another senior executive from Apple. And when this happened to kind of work on their design firm that senior executive from apple which i've got to find his name he went and hired over 400 people from apple's design team and apparently they cleaned out the entire apple design team so bad that apple had to rebuild their whole design team from scratch everyone was gone apple's got in their lawsuit they say like that they pulled over a lot of like trade secrets and custom secret stuff from apple when they when they like came over and so that's what the lawsuit's about.
3:47But anyway, you want to cut it, they completely got poached and they built this design team. So they have a real serious piece of hardware that's coming out. Apparently, it's like a smart speaker, but it also moves around. So it's going to be pretty interesting to see what that when that comes out and what that is when it comes out. So this feels like a dry run. It's their first piece of hardware. Is it something insanely revolutionary? No, it's a keyboard where you can like click checkmark to approve what the AI models working on or X to disapprove it. It has a voice button that you can push to do voice to text.
4:15And anyways, it's got a couple other little buttons you can branch things and anyways there's a couple funny buttons and I think there's some spots where you can make your own short keys and uh short codes in there so I I like the concept I think it's a lot of fun if you look at the way this is built I mean this is very um DIY almost like it like you could kind of buy these components and kind of assemble this thing yourself but it looks like a lot of fun as well at the same time yeah I mean I think I think there is some utility to this you know i for those of us who don't use like something like whisper flow i know there's some like keyboard shortcuts to to talk to um claude and chat gbt but having like an actual button you can press and like a little interface i think it's kind of a cool idea um you know especially now uh with chat gbt getting just faster and and codex like you can I feel like it could potentially allow you to multitask a lot faster.
5:12What I would be interested to see is if you see, if you look at the picture, if you're watching the video of this, there's some just clear unmarked buttons. You know, it'd be cool if you could almost program those buttons to be different, different chat threads you have or different projects you're working on. So you can bounce back and forth between stuff. because that's one thing I find myself doing is like I start like three or four different projects at once because Claude is very slow still. And so while it's working on one thing, I bounce over to something else. So it'd be nice to be able to toggle with a button.
5:50So I don't know what those keys are for, but it looks pretty cool regardless. Yeah. The landing page also looks amazing. It's like all these floating keys and you can buy them. It's only till they sell out. But yeah, you can do all these customizable keys. I think I might buy one now before it sells out while we're on the podcast. But this is something that I like about it is if you look at the picture of it, when it has like this kind of glowing border. And so when it completes your task, it lights up green. If your task needs to be done, it stays red. The reason why I like this is because there's all of these memes where it's like my head engineer just replaced their keyboard with a microphone.
6:30what do I do? And it's just I'm like, there's a microphone and a button. And that's all they do. And they just talk to Claude all day long, like through this microphone. But at the end of the day, you can't actually do that. You still need to push the approve and the disapprove buttons. There's multiple buttons that we have going on right now. But like, in all seriousness, people think I'm crazy. I know people think I'm crazy. I see a world where keyboards are way less used than the the whisper flow or the apple just voice to text or um just the the audio button like if i'm being honest when i'm using claude which is all day every day number one i'm not going to websites and clicking around their ui anymore i'm getting claude to do it and number two i'm using claude i'm talking to claude so i talk and claude executes the mouse is almost at like risk of being deleted honestly and and people will laugh at me maybe you guys all think i'm absolutely ridiculous watch keyboard and mouse sales over the next five years they're going to cut by 75 i promise you it's gonna happen maybe you'll keep like your one old like i got the the logitech like whatever mx keys whatever expensive keyboard that i don't use all the features it just looked nice when i bought it um and the same thing with like the fancy logitech some fancy logitech mouse or whatever maybe i'm just never gonna upgrade them maybe i'll just keep them forever and I'm just going to use my new uh my new open ai keypad codex micro to just push the the talk button from now on well and this I guess is news to me since we're chatting it sounds like you are going back converting to chat gbt is that you're not using cloud as much anymore what's going on over there yeah yeah so well and I mean I'll be honest like I really hope that this device would work i'm like gonna buy it right now but i'm i really hope this device would work uh in like clod or like anything else it's like a keyboard shortcut and not just tied to my chat gpt account if that's the case that's i don't know pretty ridiculous um but at the end of the day yeah i'm using opening eye a lot more right now i should do a whole nother podcast episode breaking down why and and how it all works but um yeah it's kind of cool when you have these two different models like like chat gpt and anthropic and they on the benchmarks they're both kind of surpassing each other and going back and forth and getting more and more similar and so it's a little bit easier to you know have a quote-unquote headless where you can just switch to a new model and switch to something else that you're able to uh like different models to get your tasks done so yeah recently i've switched to chat gpt i'll make a whole podcast about it but um i hope that this device in particular wouldn't impede that if I have to switch back to Anthropica in the future but for now I'm on I'm on OpenAI so might as well just get this uh get this for the codex yeah it does look pretty cool should we talk about the other device they're potentially going to release or should we say that for when it oh yeah we got to get into that there's some really juicy details as well about their second device so this is kind of like oh yeah that's what I was saying earlier is like this is the dry run for their serious device that I think they're going to come out with.
9:41And the news on the Sirius device, they don't have a lot out there yet. But Jamie, what have you seen on it basically? Well, apparently it seems like a kind of a fancy Alexa, like Amazon Alexa speaker. So it's a speaker that has some other unique features. And so at first I did kind of chuckle at this because I'm like, oh, great. It's just they came out with their own Alexa. But the more I thought about it, it's like, well, I do actually use Claude for most searches or ChatGPT. And so, you know, the original idea with the Alexa speakers is that you could have it tell you the weather and do these things.
10:21Well, now with AI, there's so much more usefulness to it. And so I could see actually using it for something besides just playing music, which is what all the Alexas in our house ended up being is just like little speakers that would play music. But yeah, I could see some usefulness, especially if you could actually connect this to your computer, similar to like a Claude Dispatch, where you could say, like, go, you know, run this report for me. Or, you know, if you could actually have it connect with your PC with your computer to do functions, I could see that being useful. But Jane, what have you heard about some of these features?
10:57And what are your thoughts? At the end of the day, after all of the drama of having to poach like Apple's entire design team, I would just hope that OpenAI would come up with a phone. I'd love for there to be another phone technology out there. I think that'd be super cool. Will that happen? No. Would developers like that? No. It's already annoying enough having to develop an app for iOS and Android. I don't think you want to make it for OpenAI as well. But sort of, I think that will happen. my prediction is that the mcp layer which basically every startup is doing right now i have an mcp for ai box basically it's like literally one link that you can give to claude or you can give to chat gpt and can access all of the features on your software and they can use it without having to like visually see it they can just kind of like ties into your back end it's really easy to make an mcp by the way like i've i've used claude to make mcps for some of my like other side projects for fun.
11:53So it's really easy. And I think that that MCP is actually basically an application layer for these types of tools. So whatever OpenAI comes out with, if you have all of the MCPs and all of these like softwares linked in your OpenAI account, which you can do that now, like your apps and stuff, you're going to be able to talk to this device and it's going to be linked in. It's already linked into like 20 different things. So like I probably could just talk to the device. Like here they have this like funny keyboard that you can push the talk button and it controls your computer. Well, that device, you probably just talk to that device and it's going to go edit your code base and let you know what it did.
12:23Now, do you want like a screen to be able to visually see what's going on? Yes, I usually want like a reference. So it's going to be interesting how to get around that. Maybe they pop something up on your computer if you're tied into something or I don't know, maybe it only talks to you on that device and you need a screen and you know, they're just trying to go screenless. I'll be curious to see what they do there. But either way, they're going to have integration to every other software that exists. So I think they have the capability of replacing, not your phone, right? But a lot of phone usage, a lot of the usage of other tools that you'd have.
12:56One interesting point that they've mentioned in this particular piece of hardware is that it includes mechanical elements that can move on their own. So I don't know, is it more like a robotic Alexa speaker? I don't know, that sounds very mysterious to me. I don't know. Is it going to follow you around and listen to you all day and then take notes for you? I don't know exactly what that means, but that's very, very interesting. Apparently, it will draw context from your emails and digital life, so it'll know everything about you. Yeah, but is it going to follow you into the bathroom? I don't know.
13:35My understanding of it was that it was on your desk and it would move around your desk. I don't really know what the benefit of that is. Maybe it looks like a little robot and it's like, I don't know, people like it or something. But anyways, it's going to be cool to see what ships there. I'm excited for this initial hardware run that they're coming out with. This seems like a funny and fun side project in the same way that Tesla and SpaceX do like merch drops where you can buy like, you can buy like a, you know, like all the funny little like a lighter that looks like the rocket ship from SpaceX and the fire comes out the bottom where the fire comes out of the rocket ship.
14:09Like there's all these like funny little things that these companies come out with. So I'll be curious to see if this, this probably is going to end up like on, on the shelf is like a piece of history if you buy it. But, um, so who knows how, how useful it will be other than just like fun merch, what they're coming out with in the future. That will be the real product to look out for. Side note on Facebook marketplace the other day, I saw a, uh, remember the boring co, the elon musk's were tunneled uh company well apparently they had these flamethrowers that they released that were the boring company i found one on facebook marketplace someone was trying to sell for 500 bucks it was pretty tempting because wow it's got to be an iconic you know piece of hardware that is a collector's item you know so maybe that's a follow suit a hundred percent i mean and 500 bucks do you remember by chance what it costs when it was first when it first came out i don't uh probably more yeah yeah that's what i'm wondering if it was even if it was even more than that and if you got a little little appreciation on that um so that would be that would be interesting what i did want to say is um i have officially acquired my keyboard we're gonna see what happens when it comes in i do a reveal video all right guys thanks so much for tuning into the podcast make sure to join the school community if you have not already it's free for this month guys We've never done this before.
