In short

Meta’s new AI model “Muse Glimmer” and related “open weight” releases, plus debate over open models vs concentrated power and the impact on OpenAI/Anthropic.

Guests/backgrounds

Jaden and Jamie (co-hosts). Jaden also discusses running Meta ads with AI tools (Claude via an MCP connector) and scaling an “AI Hustle School” community.

Key claims

Muse Glimmer weights will be open weight (downloadable, runnable locally without internet) though not fully open source. The episode frames this as goodwill and a counter to power concentration. Jamie argues free open models could slow funding for OpenAI/Anthropic and affect the broader tech economy/“AI bubble.” Jaden warns about potential security risks with default open-weight models from other countries.

Notable examples

30B-parameter Muse Glimmer running locally; 120,000-token context window; “Muse Spark 1.2” soon with strong benchmark competitiveness; comparison to Kimi K3 and local Chinese model risks; Zuckerberg quotes about rejecting job-elimination panic and opposing extreme power concentration; EMP/apocalypse-style local inference scenario.

0:28Ready to put a little spin on your day? and we distribute it to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, and hundreds more. Track your listeners, see where they're from, and start earning from ads like this, even with just 10 listeners a month. If you've been thinking about starting a podcast, this is your sign. Start free at rss.com. Welcome back to the podcast. Today we are talking about Meta. Yet again, they just released a new model called Muse Glimmer. and so we're going to talk about what that means. They're going to make it open source. Mark Zuckerberg is trying to just take over and burn everything down.

1:07So we're going to talk about that today but before we do, Jaden, why don't you tell them about our school community? Yeah, so this week we recorded a video where I break down, we go into my ads account. We've done one of these in the past. So whatever your business is, if you want ideas on how to grow and scale it using meta ads and using AI to help with the creatives and all parts of this. I've been using the AI MCP connector for my meta ads account. So I get Claude to go in there and make changes. And I'm also using AI to generate the creatives. I show you the ad campaigns I'm currently running, how much money I've spent on them, what my best performing ads are, how I'm generating ads, all of the juicy details.

1:47And that's over on the school community. Every single week we have a different video where we break down and we share how we're growing and scaling our businesses with AI tools. So yeah, this week, if you're interested in using meta ads, we have videos covering every single software and product and tool out there. But if you're interested in growing and scaling your business with meta ads, it's absolutely an incredible time in my opinion. I have never scaled meta ads before because I always felt like there was like some voodoo in there where like if you just didn't click the right button or you missed something, It was going to burn it to the ground.

2:18So you had to pay an ad agency$2 ,500 a month to run it. And then that eats into your profitability. So I just would kind of go to other channels. But I'm now scaling up meta ads. And I think it's one of my number one customer acquisition sources for AI blocks. So if you want to see how I've been doing that, what my first$4 ,000 in ad spend went to and what my next$40 ,000 in ad spend will go to or more, go check out that video. It's over on the AI Hustle School community, which is linked below. It's free to join, by the way, for the next few weeks, and then we'll be putting it, making it paid again.

2:52So if you want to go join, I would go check that out. All right. Today, we want to talk about what's going on with Meta. There is a lot of drama because Zuckerberg is going scorched earth, as some people are saying, and there's a lot of drama with OpenAI and Anthropic trying to band together against open weight models. Basically, it's a model that you can download onto your own computer, and it can run without connection to the internet. Um, and it's, it's not technically open source because they don't give you all the code to recreate it from scratch, literally. So it's not open source, but it is open weight, meaning you can download it as it's as a program and run it on your own computer without having any, um, without having the internet attached to it.

3:32You also can attach the internet to it and it's a little bit more useful. Um, so there's a bunch of, yeah, there's a bunch of different things you can do with this is a really impressive. It's a 30 billion parameter model. And they're going to open Muse Spark 1.2. And yeah, Zuckerberg had this whole video post on Instagram I was watching yesterday where he's like, we want super intelligence for all. And it's like our mission. It's kind of like universal basic income is like universal basic super intelligence. I actually love this from Zuck. I feel like they go back and forth over at Meta and maybe they're just like feeling like They were kind of behind, and so they wanted to go scorched earth and catch up with everybody.

4:12I don't know why they do it. I don't know the rhyme or reason. It feels like Llama can be really far behind or Llama can catch up a lot, but I'm really thrilled when they catch up and when they make it open weight. I think it builds a lot of goodwill for everybody, and yeah, I'm stoked about it. But Jamie, what are your thoughts on this? Yeah, I mean, I think this is a really interesting move from Meta, and I've been hearing a lot of, or at least I've served up a lot of media recently talking about how these open source models could in fact be really detrimental to the entire U.S. economy. This all basically came out after the whole Kimi K3 thing in the past two weeks about how if there's equally as good model, but it's free to use, then people are going to start using it as opposed to paying lots of money for Anthropik or OpenAI.

5:05And then the rate at which these companies fundraise and grow is going to slow, which is very detrimental to the entire economy because the whole S &P 500, the top 10 companies are all tech companies. So if they stopped fundraising and they stopped growing then their their uh revenue projections no longer are accurate and then the stock will drop in price hence ai bubble so again interesting move from mark zuckerberg because he owns meta which is a tech company he may in fact bring about the ai bubble himself because when it came to like something like kimmy k3 i personally because of the security concerns would never want to use it just because it's a Chinese product.

5:55But I might use something like Muse Glimmer because it's an American company. So, but maybe I'm wrong in thinking that. Jaden, what are your thoughts on all this? No, I agree. I'm like always wary. And it's not just like, so with a lot of these open weight models, technically you could run them on your computer locally. If you don't have any connections or any connection to the internet, you could go grab a Chinese model and it could be really useful. I don't think there'd be any security concerns with it. that being said, if we did make Kimmy K3, like the default open weight model that everybody used and all the infrastructure built around it was there at some point they could say, okay guys, now we're going to add this new plugin and the plugin could siphon data, or now we're going to add this new internet connection, or now we're going to add this new censorship thing built into it.

6:35Right. So like at the end of the day, I don't love relying heavily on the Chinese models for that reason. Um, and yeah, I'm really stoked with an American company is going to do that. And like, I know people have their problems with meta and all that kind of stuff. But at the end of the day, I think this is really cool. This is what Zuckerberg's announcement was. He said, today, we're also opening the weights for Muse Glimmer, a great 30 billion parameter dense model that can run locally. So this is what we've been talking about. And what I'm excited about is it runs on your own computer. Like, it's not like you need a server or something really insane to do it.

7:06Like, you can just run this on your own computer, which honestly, I think for like the apocalypse or something, you know, all the EMP gets shot over america and all our electricity goes out in the doomsdayer scenario don't worry we still have our muse glimmer 30 billion parameter model that can be running locally on our computers to give us answers about what berries are poisonous as we forage through the wilderness but like in all reality i think this is really cool you don't have internet somewhere you could run this thing although starlink will probably solve that in a few years but this is what else he said he said soon we'll also release the weights for muse spark 1.2 our latest foundation model meta is a strong supporter of open source and i'm proud of these releases congrats to alexander wang and the msl team for all the great work on these models um and yan lecun who left meta because of i can't remember maybe because zuckerberg's friends with trump i can't remember there was like some drama i don't remember of yan lecun leaving in fact i remember yan lecun saying that he was leaving twitter and never gonna post so i see him posting welcome back yan um because he doesn't like elon I think.

8:08But in any case, this is, I think, an awesome move. I'm really stoked about Zuckerberg making this publicly available and Muse Spark 1.2. That's their best model, which like if you go look at Muse Spark 1.2 in the top benchmarks, it's really competitive. It's like three or four right now. I mean, it's the new model. And usually when a new model comes out, you'd like it to be number one. That's why you release new models is so you can beat everyone, even if it's only for a few months. Right. Um, but they're not number one, but they made a solid model. And if they open, you know, they open source or make it open weight.

8:43So anyone can download it. I am thrilled by that prospect. Yeah. A couple of interesting quotes from Mark Zuckerberg. Uh, first he says, I do not understand why anyone believes that AI will eliminate most jobs and much of humanity's relevance would rush to build rush to build that future. The notion that AI is so dangerous that the only safe path is an extreme concentration of power seems inherently problematic. Basically, he's saying this is kind of an attack on the other side of people who are trying to make the distillation of models illegal. He's basically saying we should have open source models so that the power isn't too concentrated at open AI or Anthropic or whoever has the best model, therefore has all the power.

9:30If AI is really that dangerous and poses that much of a threat to our security and economy, then we should have open source models, which I think is a pretty good argument. He seems to be pretty pro distillation. So Jane, what are your thoughts on that? Yeah, I mean, the people at the top are anti distillation, the people that are not at the top are pro distillation, because they want to distill the top models to help bring up their own model. So yeah, I think it's definitely a funny situation in Silicon Valley right now. What I will say that is cool though about Muse Glimmer that they're releasing is that it has a 120 ,000 token context window.

10:07I remember when Claude got a 130 token context window and ChatGPTs must've been like 50 ,000 tokens or something. And I just remember, or maybe 60. And I just remember being like, oh my gosh, Claude is the greatest thing ever. 120 ,000 token context window is so huge. And now, of course, we're used to like, Gemini came out and broke all the models by being the first, I think, put up a million token context window. And now I think everyone's trying to kind of copy that. But in any case, having 128 ,000 token context window for something that's under an Apache 2.0 license, like that's pretty useful.

10:40There's a lot of stuff you can do with this. So I'm pretty excited to see how this progresses. I'll be following along. I've always said it from the beginning. I've never been a meta, huge meta stan, but I like this side of Zuckerberg releasing these open weight models for everyone to use. I think it's incredibly, yeah, incredibly helpful for the whole industry. Yeah, there's a lot of drama in there, but I think at the end of the day, the more AI we can get our hands on and the less concentration of power, the better. So I'm happy to have another player in the race, another competitor. Seems like Meta is trying to step up and get something impressive built.

11:15So I'll be definitely supporting that. Guys, thank you so much for tuning into the podcast today. We hope that you enjoyed the episode.
