In short

Tyrese Haliburton discusses respect and “aura” language in sports, his Olympic-team experience (including not playing early), his Pacers journey after an Achilles injury and missing the prior season, and off-court life: DJing, wedding music connections (50 Cent), and money habits (private flights, eBay/Grailed, Facebook Marketplace deals).

Guests

Tyrese Haliburton (NBA player; Indiana Pacers). Host: Speedy (Boardroom Talks). No other guests named.

Guest backgrounds

Haliburton is from Wisconsin (small hometown; few NBA role models). He previously played with/around Floyd Mayweather (basketball events before the NBA). He’s close with 50 Cent through Pacers-related sponsorship ties.

Key claims

Notable examples

50 Cent’s wedding performance (Haliburton says it was free for him; he paid accommodations). Haliburton’s viral “I run New York” moment at the wedding. Flying private via Southwest exit row. 0:00Do you feel like Tyrese Haliburton is respected in the way that he should be? When the Knicks won, I thought to myself, I gotta turn this shit off. I can't watch it. You've hooped with Floyd Mayweather before. I have. Is he good? I've never in my life been to the club and not heard one Drake song. Drake song, the whole name, right? Let alone for a whole week. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I lost my mind. A few years ago, I remember seeing a video of you congratulating 50 Cent on a residency with a couple of shorties. What was that video of? I was so confused. Okay, so first of all... When you think about the journey that was making the Olympic team, but then not playing, and then taking your team to the finals, and then losing, and then sitting out the entirety of a season, coming back this upcoming season, and your very first game not being a nationally televised game.

0:53How does that make you feel? What's going on guys? I'm Speedy and this is an episode of Boardroom Talks. Today I am joined by none other than Tyrese Halliburton. What's up man, how are you? I'm good man, good, chilling, how are you? I'm great bro. I was thinking about this on the way, you might be the first person I've ever met from Wisconsin. Really? Yeah. That's awesome. When you're growing up there, who are the people that you're like, oh they made it out? Who's the guys? No, there's not a lot. I'd be lying if I told you there was a lot. There was no NBA players from the crib? Nobody. The closest Milwaukee or Madison, Devin Harris from Madison.

1:31Devin Harris was tough. He put on the Mavericks. Devin Harris was good. Latrell Sprewell is from the city, from Milwaukee. After that, it gets kind of dark that way. How about non-athletes? Are there other people who made it out of Wisconsin? I searched it, but I saw Willem Dafoe. Yeah, he's from 15 minutes from my hometown. But I didn't know he was from there until I was like 21. Okay, so no. There was nobody aspirational. No. No, I'm trying to think. Was there somebody that I was growing up like, damn, they made it out, I can make it out. Nobody. Nobody. Nah. Well, fuck it. At least you get to be that for all of the young people.

2:08Yeah, yeah, yeah. That makes it fire. That makes it more special for me. What was life like growing up there? My hometown's like 70 ,000 people, predominantly white. I don't know. So there's not a ton to do in Wisconsin or the Midwest at all. But we spent a lot of time in the gym, a lot of time just kicking it at the crib with the homies. I know people would think being outside, I hate being outside, so I didn't do that often. Okay. You mean like outside, outside or like outdoors? Outdoors. Okay. I hate being outdoors, especially in the winter. Trash. But the fall is cool when the leaves are changing and stuff.

2:45That's cool, but I hate being outside. You wasn't growing up like snowball fights, like making snowmen, stuff like that? No, hated that. All of that. Hated that. Like not shoveling the driveway? Never. Never. My dad did that. But we played football at recess, like outside in the snow. He had some battles there in elementary, but after that, it's over with. I'm not trying to be outside. You're just back in the crib? Yes. Have you always been a big homebody? Yeah, super. Super. I never really had sleepovers. I never went to other people's house. People had to always come to my crib because I hated leaving my house.

3:19And I'm still that way. I don't like sleeping at other people's houses. I feel that way. As a kid though, I was spending the night at all my man's crib. No, no, no. They got to come to me. We had the hangout crib though. Everybody was always at my house. Was it like the movies, like a traditional Midwest crib with like a basement? Yeah. With like a pool table in the basement and stuff? Yeah, the pool table in the basement, yeah. Oh, okay. So this is like a sitcom house. Yeah, yeah. I would say so. But it wasn't like, it's one story though. story thousand square feet my room if my room the distance between my room and my mom's room it's about this far away so there was not the hallway was really skinny to get there but we just kicked it in the living room plug the video game into the living room tv and take over the living room do you guys still have that crew is it still in the fam yes yeah we'll never i refuse to ever let my parents get rid of it i like one of the first things i did when i signed my new deals pay it off so my parents have no reason to complain say there's any debt nothing we just we good so you go back often uh like once a year i was just at the crib literally a week ago so it's good to go back yeah i'm sure you just got married recently man congratulations i appreciate how was it it was good it was good a lot of fun it's it's interesting when you get married and you're like an nba player it can feel like you invite people who have some like notoriety it can feel like a little like hollywood or like a little big time but because of where my girl is from and uh where I'm from, like smaller town.

4:42She's from a town of like 1 ,500 people. So all get together made it feel very, very Midwest, very at home, which was, which was fun. It seemed like there was a full circle moment because a few years ago, I remember seeing a video of you like congratulating 50 Cent on like a residency. Yeah. With a couple of shorties. What was that video about? I was so confused. Okay. So first of all, the girl right next to me is my wife. Okay. And then the other two are her best friends. Okay. So 50's team called me because 50's my man. So they called me and said, hey, can you make this video for his residency to congratulate him?

5:14It's not going to be shown anywhere. It's going to be like, say whatever, do whatever you want. It's funny. So we had a game. I was on my way to a game when they called me. So I said, I can do it after the game. We went out after the game. I completely forgot. So we got home late night and I was like, damn, what could I do? That'd be funny. And I was a little drunk. I was like, this is probably funny. So I sent it to him. I went to sleep. And when I woke up, my phone was blowing up. And I'm like, what happened? Because I'm thinking I posted it. No, I texted to him. He thought it was funny, so he posted it.

5:45And it was everywhere. By the time I couldn't even tell him to take it down because it was already everywhere. Yeah, it was too late. That video was mad funny. But without any of that context, I was so confused. I was like, why is Tyrese Halliburton congratulating 50 Cent on a residency with three women? I was like, what is happening here? Yeah, and people were calling me corny because I was like, we just got back from the club. I was narrating the story, which in itself is probably corny, but because it was between us, it was supposed to be funny. Right. It was like some internal thing that went external.

6:15Yes, exactly. But like I said, full circle moment because he actually performed at your wedding. Yeah. How was that? Yeah, it was awesome. It was special. We've been able to have a cool relationship for a while because his alcohol is a sponsor for the Pacers, so I got to know him. It's a cool relationship that we have. He was supposed to come to my wedding. He was helping me look for performers to perform at the wedding. Because I was thinking if he came to the wedding and a song of his came on, he would jump on. You know what I mean? So I was like, who can we get to perform? And we went to a bunch of different people.

6:44He was helping me look for a bunch of different people. Prices is kind of crazy. I was not prepared for that. What are people talking these days for a performance? 30 minutes? Yeah. 750 bands? 30 minutes? You're lying. I swear, bro. 750? I was shocked. I was like, that's not happening. No. There's no chance. No, no. That's almost a ticket for half an hour. And I said, like, yo, I'll pay for all the accommodations. I got you. Who was like your dream list? Like who's somebody you really would have loved to perform there? Like what, dead or alive? Or you're just saying - Just like in real life today, like who would you have liked to have performed there?

7:15Well, I had like a, it would have been really cool to get like Neo or Usher, but they don't do, Usher don't do weddings. I don't know if Neo does weddings. If he does, he's on tour right now. So that was like out of the picture. I ain't gonna say who was trying to whack me, 750 ,000, but there was a few artists that were trying to go there. There was no chance that was happening. Did they know it was you? Yeah, they knew it was me. I thought to myself, let me not go the corporate route. I'm going to just DM them. Hit somebody personally. Yeah, I had some conversations. I'm not going to say who, but I had a conversation.

7:42I was like, we want to perform. They were like, I'm a big fan. I would love to. Next time you're in town, we can get dinner. So I'm like, oh, that's love. Like, it's going to be, you know, I'm thinking, if they say a number, it ain't going to be that. He's like, here's my manager's number. Put them in touch with your manager. Something like that. It's over. It's done. You're like, babe, I got our guy. Like, here's who's performing. Yeah, and then they were like, 750. So I hit him, after the manager, my manager told me that, so I hit him, I said, hey man, I can't do that, but if you want, I can pay for the PJ, accommodations, you good, like take care of it completely.

8:15He left me on red. Nah. So after that I said, it's over with, I'll never, I'm not rocking with him. I hope you stop listening to this person in your leisure. For sure. You can't bump him no more. No, never, never. Out of respect. Yeah, that's ridiculous. Can't do it. So then how did 50 get to performing? Yeah, so then after we got to the point, I was like, yo, I ain't gonna do nothing. He's like, nah, I'm gonna do it, bro. Don't trip. So then him and his team, he was like, I'm not gonna come to the wedding because I wanted to be a surprise. Don't tell anybody. So he was supposed to be a guest.

8:43That just switched to him just coming to perform, which was pretty cool because I literally didn't tell anybody. You know, you have some people getting ready to like peel out and I'm like, hey, man. If I was you, I was kidding. Like, you might want to wait just a little bit. And then he came in with Yeo and Murda and everybody. It was dope. Did he charge you? No, he didn't charge me. Good. I took care of his accommodations and everything. His love is just, that's like, that's family. So, forever, I got his back forever for that. And I kind of was like, you post that video, you know, you - Right.

9:13You owe me one. Yeah, I don't want to have to remind you, but you know. Yeah, for sure. But it was cool. It was love. I saw you really sing one part of the song hardly. It was, you had said like, I run New York. Yeah. Which is an iconic line on the song, but I was just wondering like, what was that about? Yeah, you know what's crazy is like, out of all the tracks he performed, and that's the one that went viral, of course. I was on stage. I jumped on stage for what felt like every track, and for some reason that's the one that went big. There was no, it didn't mean anything. It was literally just me rapping a track.

9:46No reference to any past basketball stuff. No, I'm not. I mean, I love basketball. I love competition. I love the rivalry we have, but I'm not thinking about that on my wedding day. So I was not thinking about that in that time. Recently, you've been quoted saying you don't like the word aura. Yeah. Is it because you have none? That's a great question. I wouldn't go that far. I would probably just say it's an overused word. It's an overused word. Is it a thing? Of course it's a thing. You know, sometimes people walk in the room and you're like, damn, they just can command a room? Yeah. But as a kid, I never thought of that.

10:21As a kid, I never thought of to say like, oh my God, LeBron's aura is... I never... Yeah. I never... We just might be too old for that. Maybe it's like a real... Yeah, yeah, yeah. I just ain't rocking with it. I just ain't rocking with the word glaze. Glaze. Kids love that one too. Everything is glaze to them. Everything. You compliment somebody, yo, stop glazing. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Or like, I go home, kids are excited to see me, but the kid who's too cool is like, yo, stop glazing. Right, right, right. I'm like, that's not a thing. I don't believe in that. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm the same. I feel like we should be showing each other love.

10:52For sure. So Aura, Glaze are out. Yeah, I'm not rocking with it. Is there a word that you do like? Maybe like a slang word that you are fucking with? Yeah, there's probably a few. I'm trying to think off the top of my head that I use in my everyday lingo. You know what? Like growing up in Wisconsin or like in Milwaukee specifically, people used to say OC. Like that's out of control in a good way. But as I got older, people started to use OD. Yeah, in New York we say OD. OD. and then that's one that's in my everyday. So you say OD. All the time. But you've turned your back on your people. You don't say OC no more.

11:25I never say OC. To me, OC, it also was a way to explain a basketball player that was just wild. Got it. He's OC. Got it. But they also used it in a good way. Like he's OC. He's killing right now. Yeah. He's OC. It was too much. Got it. So I might use it when I go to the crib, I might use it to explain a player that is out of control. Got it. Yeah. A little code switch. Yeah, for sure. I'm good at that. I learned that pretty well. Five-year,$244 million. Almost a quarter of a billion dollars. With that being said, I've seen you do a lot of financially questionable things. Like what? First and foremost, you went to WrestleMania.

12:05Yeah. Coach on Southwest? What was that about? Oh. First of all, I set exit role on Southwest. Okay. I set exit role. But if we can save our coins a little bit, why would I not? People don't understand, bro. Flying private is a little ridiculous sometimes. No, no. Not sometimes. I think it's always ridiculous. But I see dudes fly private who I know I make a lot more money than. And when I was getting these quotes for flying private, I had to call my financial advisor like, am I missing something? Because, like, for real, like, I know I make way more than this guy, and he's flying private all the time.

12:41Posting it on IG, whatever. I can't do that every time. That makes me sick. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know? What are the times that you will do it? Like, when is, like, a good time to get the jet? Vacation. Okay. Not if I'm going to Europe. That's never happened. That is... They tax for that. That would never happen in life. You'll never pay for that? To go to Europe? Yeah. When I sign my next deal. I was just saying... Because the next one might be, like, crazy crazy. Right. If my next deal is what I want it to be, then I don't know if I ever fly commercial again. Because I feel like at that point, you can do just what you want now.

13:13Like, whatever matters to you. And to me at that point, private flying will matter to me. But right now... Only domestic and only if you're going on vacation? Nah, that's cap. I flew private here from the crib. Okay. But I just understood. Now I understand where pricing is. And for every time I fly private, the next time if I tell my business manager, I'll be like, I want to fly private. She might be like, let's go southwest. Well, that just so happens to be what I could get straight from Indy. Indy is not an easy place to fly out. Got it, got it. So straight flight Southwest, all my mans is on there.

13:52Exit row, we had it full. It was easy. Was it, were there like people that knew you sitting close to you? Like people I brought or just people? Just like people that knew you. For sure. From Indy? Yeah, no doubt. No doubt. Is that not like uncomfortable at all? So Indy, they take care of me. So I'm the first person on the plane. Right. Put my headphones on, put my head down. hide pretty much yeah so how did I know that you were on there cuz it was on a YouTube video oh it's how you to video my camera was right next to me yeah so I was very surprised to see that yeah what a quarter billion dollars you know I know but you know what I'm saying no I definitely understand you I understand the financial burden that flying private might have on someone like yourself but yeah I just was I was just surprised I'll say yeah it makes a lot of sense But even the dudes who make around the same money as me, I still am like, sometimes I feel like a rookie going up to them, like, hey fam, how do you do this every time?

14:50Do you have a connect or some shit? Yeah, that's what I want to know. And they don't. They just be spending it. There's a lot of rappers who make probably one tenth of what you make that fly private. No, no. That's unbelievable. I can't even fathom that. A lot of the people that you maybe have asked to perform at your wedding may be fly private. For sure. And make less money than you. I can't understand because it to me it's like if you you're 6 '5 and above Right or you could be a little six through whatever people are gonna look at you like oh he's got it must be in the league Yeah, right so they're gonna Somebody's gonna be bold enough to come to you and want to strike a conversation and when I fly and I don't always want to Talk talk so you know I'm saying like I get it.

15:28So but like a lot of these rappers could probably hide Yeah, they don't get away with it if they want if they don't have a distinct look they could probably put the hoodie on yeah and be straight and 95 on yeah and be good shades yeah another financial thing that kind of caught me off guard shopping on Facebook marketplace I have done that before yeah very recently you bought a turntable I did market yeah I met up with the dude at the parking lot of Krispy Kreme yeah tell me about that um sometimes you know I go on wherever I'm looking at, I see something, I'm like, oh, I want it, but that would be financially irresponsible for me to just buy it because I just saw it right there.

16:07Why don't we search for a deal? So we go on eBay. I love eBay. I love eBay. It might be one of the best websites in the world, to be honest. Go on eBay, but then I got to check Facebook Marketplace just off the strength. I have to. Because somebody local got it. Usually I won't do it. Like, I'm not going to go on... I still have Facebook, but I don't use... Like, I only... I got to see what's going on at the crib. Right. That's why I use Facebook for it, but I'm not posting or anything. But wifey, she might, you know, she posts, like, our wedding pictures on Facebook. Fam like to see it and stuff.

16:39So I'm like, I see something on Facebook Marketplace. I'll send it to her. Maybe I'll send it to my brother who doesn't have the same last name as me. Right. So it would be easy for him to, so he might, you know, hit them, and then we can figure it out from there. So the turntables, wifey, before we have the same last name, message him. Then I'll just meet him at Krispy Kreme because I'm not going to send my girl to do that individually. I went and did it. Yeah. Did the guy recognize you or no? Not at first. Okay. You know, like it was like, oh, look at it. Boom. Here's the money. Pick it up. Put it in my car.

17:11Close it. And he was like, wait, are you? And I was like, yeah. Get in the car. And then you just slide. Okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But how's the exchange? I feel like whenever I would have done a deal on like Facebook marketplace, obviously nothing's illegal. It just feels illegal. It does. Something about meeting up in a public place just feels... Yeah, it feels wrong to a sense, right? Yeah. That is interesting. You know, I traded, back in the day, I traded my PS3 for Xbox 360 on Craigslist. I did that too. I did the same exact trade, actually. Yeah. Did we trade each other? No. But I was a little kid, so my mom and dad did it.

17:49But yeah, I got to have somebody with me. No way I was alone. Just in case, yeah, yeah. You never know. For sure. Not that they're packing heat or something. Just in case. Just in case. You never know. What other things have you copped from Facebook Marketplace? You know what? I probably ain't really bought much off there, but when I got traded from SAC, my parents sold my whole crib on Facebook Marketplace. Really? Like the furniture, stuff like that? Yeah. So there's this woman who bought my kitchen table. This family bought my kitchen table. I wasn't there. My mom and they have DMed me before, like, hey, would you come to the crib and sign the table?

18:21and I'm like I'm not doing that but yeah I don't know if I really bought that might have been my first real purchase on there you know I bought a Steam Deck the little gaming console I bought that on Facebook Marketplace did you do the meetup as well? yeah I think so where was that one at? probably parking lot over Wendy's I think okay yeah this is so funny to me yeah eBay is a site that you like love it have you copped some shit from there? everything I wish I had my phone and I would show you everything that I've, I buy everything off eBay since high school. Also, Grailed, you're a big fan of.

18:57Oh, huge fan. I feel like you must have a fake username on there because if people knew it was you, they'd probably highball you. Yeah, I definitely have a fake username on both. What have you grabbed from Grailed? A lot of clothes, a ton of clothes. I don't shop on there as much, but there's a lot of, as much as I used to, but a lot of like vintage stuff and like some, something that people don't understand is like when When people have money and they wear some and they post on social media, they be like, man, I can't wear it again. So they'll get rid of it for the low. And I'll take it. That's when you come in.

19:29I'm coming in. And I'm lowballing every offer. I'm offering you half. Maybe less. You lowballing is hilarious. Yeah, I'm lowballing. I got to get a deal. Who wouldn't know Tyrese Halliburton out here lowballing people and buying things on fake book marketplace? Yeah. Yeah. I got to keep this money. Yeah, I see that. What is it like being a DJ? Are you enjoying the journey of having a new hobby? Oh, yeah, I'm loving it. I'm loving it. Because I really drink like that. So when we go out to the spa, I'm always like, is DJ crazy or is DJ whack? And something that I think my notoriety or who I am has helped is I have the access to go to the DJ and be like, hey, man.

20:13Yeah, let's fix it. you know and now that i have the ability to change some things recently i was at uh one of uh me and my wife's friends back home back at her hometown her wedding i wasn't really vibing with the dj so i went up i went to walk to the hotel across street grabbing my laptop i was like hey bro i think it's i could you're still gonna make this money like i don't need the money but i think i could take over and he was like that'd be awesome i took over so it was yeah it's been fun uh what What are some of the downsides of being a DJ? Requests? I was just about to say that. I know people come up to you, like, yo, you played a song.

20:51Well, the problem is most people don't feel comfortable with that, except for my wife and my sister-in-law. And they are the two who probably bother me the most. Because she knows I've played you the whole, like we had a Halloween party, I've played you the whole set. You know what it is. So when we get halfway and you know I got this transition planned, and for you to come up to me - And ask for something else. Yeah. You're trying to throw me off my game, which I feel like is a problem because now I want to argue with you and I'm going to miss this transition and now be mad at everybody. So I think you should just allow me to do that.

21:28But I'm learning. I'm learning. Are you ever going to get to a point where you feel like you'll be a bookable DJ? I think so. I think so. I think Shaq has changed the game. He does it, right? But he plays a lot of house music. EDM and house music. Never. Never, ever. I did my bachelor party in Ibiza. Trash. It's all house music there. I've never been for that reason. All my mans who go say, bro, you're gonna hate it. It's only house music. And Iceman had just dropped. I need to hear that. And I'm like, I've never in my life been to the club and not heard one Drake song, let alone for a whole week.

22:02I lost my mind. I lost my mind. But Calvin Harris was fired up. Shout out to Calvin, but we would like some Drake as well. Yeah, for sure. What would you charge? $750 ,000? If that's the going rate, I don't know. I don't know. I ain't thought about that. I got to figure out what these DJs are going for. And I got to know my audience, too. That's true. That's important. You got to know how much money they got in order to... For sure. Maybe that's why that rapper or artist tried to charge you so much, because they Googled what your contract was. It could be. It wasn't a rapper, I'll tell you that.

22:33Okay, well, whoever it was. Yeah. They probably Googled like Halliburton contract, saw what I saw, and they were like 750. Yeah, which I mean, I understand, because before I was in the NBA, or even maybe early in the NBA, I pocket watch too. Like, you know what I mean? You make this much, that's this much per minute, per day, per month, whatever. Using the iPhone calculator? Yeah, for so. But now that's over with. That's not happening, no chance. I've seen you say that you don't get starstruck like meeting many people? Not as much anymore. Used to growing up. Used to for sure. How about Joe Jonas at WrestleMania?

23:11Yeah, that threw me for a loop there. That threw me for a loop. You know what? It's the people I grew up like watching and I was a big Disney kid. So Joe Jonas, first time I met Zac Efron, I was a little nervous. I was upset. We were like, my wife, we both love High School Musical. So like we see, we're at a party and we see Zac Efron. damn we gotta go over there right and she's like you gotta say something and i'm like i'm like i like you know like those people like double duds they're like i did that like five five times before i was like fuck it i'm going yeah did he know you uh yeah okay yeah which was cool have you ever gone to meet somebody that you think didn't know who you were for sure really i feel like now you'd be in the clear, but maybe not.

24:00No, it's definitely happened before. I'm trying to think specifically. I can't think somebody specifically, but there's no doubt that that's happened before. And you kind of just just like... Are you going over there hoping, like, fuck, I hope they know who I am so this is less awkward. Like, I could just... Yeah, but now it's, maybe it's a little ignorant that I'm like they probably know who I am at this point. I think it's fair to say. I mean, one of the faces of the league, I think, so like... Yeah, I try to just go as What up, bro? Nice to meet you. I don't even know how to do... And I introduce myself to everybody.

Read the full transcript

24:31I feel like it's rude not to introduce yourself. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I hate when people are like, I know who you are. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm just being nice. J and B, you met. J and B. Beyonce? Oh, yeah, yeah, J and B. I thought you were saying that. I was like, it was one person. No, no, no. Like, J and Beyonce. Yeah. Where did you meet them at? I met them at the gala in Atlantic City. Oh, the Reform joint. For Reform, yeah. Michael Rubin and them. Yeah. actually really dope story one of the coolest stories ever uh i met them we had a small conversation um but then i was we were leaving the gala going the back way through this elevator and i see jay walking down i'm like oh we're about to get on the same elevator that's gonna be pretty cool he walks up to me he bumps me he like like you know like hey he's like bet you know i had that wow and i was like i was like i can't wait to call the homies at the crib like Jay just like, that was pretty cool.

25:30But yeah, those are two people that still like, like I'm saying, command the room, but I wouldn't use the word aura. I don't like that word. But I know what you mean though. You know what I'm saying? They command the room when they walk in. Hove air dribbling is like a vision that I would never have thought I'd seen. No, I was fired up. And then he caught the N1 on you. Yeah, bummy. Hey, bet you know I had that. I was like, that was really like OG. Yeah. You know, like that was fire. You've hooped with Floyd Mayweather before. I have. Is he good? Yeah, Floyd can who? Floyd can who is funny because, like, you know, all of them are – it was all his boys, you know what I'm saying?

26:04And so they know, like, can't hurt Floyd. It's like don't be bumping him crazy, you know? Don't really play D. Yeah, and he walking in and, like, he's Floyd, so he's like, he's with me. Like, I'm on Floyd's team. I'm just like, bet. But it was before I was in the NBA, so there was an expectation. I had to get my game off. You know, so I had to get my game off at that time. Did you do well? I did really well, yeah. Okay. I feel like Floyd hooping is probably like Obama hooping. Because when Obama used to play, I feel like nobody probably wanted to guard him because they'd be scared to hurt him.

26:39Imagine you accidentally go up for a rebound, elbow Obama. Boom. Yeah, that'd be crazy. Cook me on his eye and it's like, oh, I blackened the eye of the president. Yeah, that would be crazy. But they, you know, Floyd always tells the story of like his son. I went to lay it up. His son hard fouled me. Floyd stopped the game. He said, hey, man, don't ever do that again. But I was like, you know, I just was like, I had never met like a real celebrity before. You know what I mean? Like literally a month before that, I ran into him at a restaurant. And he had no idea who I was. I wasn't even in the NBA yet.

27:17I went to say what up. Big security stepped in front of me. I was like, ah, it's kind of, I look like a fan right now, which I am, but it looks a little crazy. But then I told, shout out Jordan Crawford and his boy, when I got to know him well at the gym, he was like, what? Come to the boxing gym with me. So I went to the boxing gym and I met him and then we just became cool from there. So it was pretty cool. Are you guys still cool to this day? Yeah, we still talk from time to time. Shout out to Floyd, man. Damn, going from his security stepping in front of you to being his teammate on the court.

27:49that yeah it was great circle moment yeah uh what is what is your off-court endeavors like on the business side like i was looking around but i really couldn't find that much yeah yeah you know um as like time goes on like investing and stuff is a lot more important for me i switched financial advisors recently to work with frank zeka and his team uh who work with you know shay steph um you know devin booker a lot of different guys and that gives me you know access to do a lot more things that they're doing which is like really good for me uh something that i've been very appreciative of but as far as like the business side like as far as like partners like puma's obviously been my biggest partner uh that's been very special for me over these last couple years and then uh movado on the watch side uh has helped me a lot because i was going down a crazy rabbit hole when i signed my deal of like buying a million watches i was getting ready to do a lot of dumb stuff and signing with Movado grounded me a lot and has allowed me to, you know, they take care of me so that helps me a lot.

28:50I saw a few of them. I saw a Cartier crash. Yeah. I saw, I think I saw a Prezi in there. Yeah. Were you really into watches? Was that like a thing for you? Yeah, you know, so like, ah man, when I signed my deal, or actually the year before I signed my deal. I bought a Prezi. And I was like, oh man, this is like a, it was like a high buying it. You know, I needed a watch because everybody got a watch. I don't got anything. It looked kind of crazy. So I got a Prezi. And then after I signed my, my deal, I was like, man, I got to get, I bought like, I went to the RealReal. Here it goes again. The night I signed my deal, I knew I was going to sign my deal that night.

29:31I was like, man, I got, I'm buying a watch. I don't know what. and I bought this like mini tank that I still have to this day. I wear it all the time because it takes me back to that. I walked in the real real. I was like, I need that one right there. Where was the real real here? Yeah. Wow. What is it? Melrose? Melrose? Yeah. Bought it there. And then I, in season tournament, we went to the finals, lost to the Lakers. Like 250 bands. Spent the whole thing the next day. What'd you get? I bought the crash. Oh, wow. I spent the whole thing the next day. So I was going down a bad path and Mavado saved me, which I'm very thankful for.

30:09Shout out to Mavado. Yeah, no, shout out to them for sure. I want to talk some basketball stuff for a second. I want to talk about the Olympics. You kind of like leaned into the bit. For sure. But you told that funny ass story to Bron about him and KD and the OGs being like, you know, not everybody's going to get a chance to play. And then you had the moment of realization like, oh shit, like he's actually talking about me. I'm not the one. I'm the one who's not going to play. In that moment when you're hearing that and coming to that realization, is it funny or are you like low-key sick? Well, yeah, it's both for sure, right?

30:42It definitely is funny looking back on it. In that moment, I was like, oh, my God, I'm really about to not get no burnout here. And I know social media is going to be having fun with this. but at the same time I was also like I'm sure KD won't be mad at me saying this but you know KD is like I'm a god right we're gods right he likes to use that word which is a little crazy but I understand what he's saying right and he said that in that meeting too at the end of the day we 12 gods you know what I mean which is a crazy thing to say and like shout out to K for thinking like that that's like an unbelievable mindset but i was thinking when i got to the room i was like i want i didn't think i was like a god but at the same time like i'm on the olympic team sure this is like crazy you know what i mean like i'm one of the 12 guys that they selected on the olympic team for a reason so uh i'm just gonna take it in stride i'm gonna learn a lot like i every day after practice i'd be like i like steph i gotta shoot with steph i'm like i gotta do shooting workouts with steph book those guys like i gotta see what's going on what it's talking about you know and aunt and everybody and us to being like two of the younger two dudes on the team like just learning a lot in that environment but yeah was I sick for sure but then it was like how can I make it fun because I ain't about to I don't want to waste my summer and just be miserable the whole time yeah yeah so like that's how me and Katie got really close he wasn't playing early and I was sitting on the other bench and I was just like I'm gonna crack jokes the whole time and Katie didn't really know me so he's like man I'm gonna sit with you because I guess it's gonna make it more fun.

32:15But then he's like, when I start playing, I can't sit by you anymore. So he stopped sitting with me. But yeah, just trying to make fun out of it. And it was kind of like the eight mile B-Rabbit thing. Like before y 'all can get to me, I'm going to crack the joke. You know what I'm saying? And yeah, I didn't realize that the tweet was going bang like it did. No, that went dumb. But it went crazy. And I didn't realize, because I tweeted it and I muted it because it was going crazy for a little bit but when I came back and like like Elon Musk had retweeted it I was like oh this is getting a little it's getting a little crazy uh but it made it fun for sure I like the mindset though of like let me make the joke first so nobody else can make the joke you can't get this joke off I already said it right exactly very smart approach I like that uh if I'm not mistaken though the very next season you take your Indiana Pacers to the NBA finals yeah how much was that like olympic snub on your mind throughout that run well you know what bro like it's funny you say that because the first half of the season i was horrible i didn't make the all-star game uh i contemplated taking like a week or two weeks like mental mental health like break like i needed a mental break reset i contemplated that had some conversations so i realized that that was probably a little extra like they didn't need to do all that um it was it was rough bro uh but i like switched like things started to go well for me the second half of the year i made all nba uh but like it was it was uh there it's just my whole life people have always had like these these doubts and these like things to say about me and i've always used those that negativity and tried to flip it as best i can and that's just been a i wouldn't be in the nba if i didn't approach things that way i'm a very petty person my bookmarks are full of nothing but hate and people talking shit uh that's just who i am so that would never change and the olympics just added more fuel to the fire for sure i mean that like the the tweets that i had ready to tee off after game seven the tweets the what i was gonna wear after all of it was going to be crazy so if y 'all won what were you gonna say i don't know it would have got ugly i know it got really ugly because i would have got tweet i know what would have happened bro we would have one we would have celebrated as soon as I touched the locker room, as soon as I touched the locker room, they'd shoot champagne, I would have grabbed my phone, went right to Twitter and said something.

34:41And then the problem is if we were drinking champagne and partying and then get on the plane and go home and I'm drunk. And you have time now. It's over. It would have been bad for everybody. So sometimes I think that it was like a sign from the Lord, like not yet. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Not yet, you know? So hopefully that time comes because it's gonna be ugly. Social media is gonna be ugly when that time comes. There would have been so much potential in a redemption tweet of like the, when you get the A on the group project, and then like you could have flipped that into like with the trophy instead of the medal.

35:18Yes. When I'm the reason why, you know, there's like a... It was already, bro. It was already. Damn. Well, it's not too late. It's not too late. Right, right, right. It just in that moment would have, just the story behind it. One year removed. Yeah, it would have all went. But you know what? I think I'm a bit, you know, I love WWE. I love narratives and storylines, and that's what makes the world great. And there's a new storyline to be had, which will be, I think, even more special. As the story goes, that was the game that you got hurt. You tore your Achilles. Was it the first quarter that you tore your Achilles?

35:47Yeah, first quarter. If you didn't tear that Achilles, do you think that the game would have gone differently? Of course. Of course I do. Of course. But, like, I hate being, like, the woulda man. You know what I mean? Like, I hate that. But I understand, like, of course, Pacer fans are going to, like, Pacer fans have never won a championship. So that's constantly the conversation through social media. And now with our rivals winning, it makes it, the conversation on social media has got a lot more toxic, which has been awesome for me to see. I love social media, so it's been fun for me. but of course I view that we would have won and yeah I'm sure Thunder fans hear that and they're like fuck out of here and I'm sure a lot of people do but like how else would I view it what are you going to say no no we would have lost but you know hopefully I get that opportunity again how much are you on NBA Twitter are you like crazy I'm on there all the time I don't have a burner I do it on the reel That's what everyone who does have a burner would say.

36:54I swear to God I don't have a burner. I don't have a burner. Never made a burner. Because then I lose the people that I follow and their mutuals. I lose all that. So, nah. Nah, I do mine. But I wish, I always say there will be a time where I become KD and I get back at everybody. It will get there. It's just not there yet. But I will get there eventually. Making it to the finals and then losing in a game seven, I imagine is like a pain. I mean, I can't put it, that shit probably sucks terribly. Do you think it would have hurt less if y 'all had lost in the first round? Like not, obviously you want to go as far as you can, but just in terms of how much that shit sucks.

37:34For sure, for sure. It probably would have stung much less if you just lost. For sure it would have hurt less, no doubt. Because you're right there. And for me, I always say it's hard to explain to people to go, I literally went from the mountaintop. I'm literally about to touch the mountaintop. You know what I'm saying? the top of our sport, and then to a week later, I can't even get in the shower by myself. You know what I mean? Like, horrible trash situation, like, for my teammates to have to go from like, you know, the year that we just had, again, we won 19 games this last year, and like, the conversation is always about, like, if I got hurt, and it's about me, when like, as a group, what we did was like, unbelievable, and I always joke with people like, Like, you see, like, the Cavs just went on, like, a 10-year anniversary for the chip.

38:24Like, I feel like I'm connected to those guys forever. And, like, it's weird because, like, when you lose, you're not supposed to necessarily say that. But, like, the run we had, I feel like I'm forever connected to those guys, like, for the rest of my life. I have to be because, like, what we did is, like, it was so unexpected. And, like, literally the only people who believed that we could do that were the people that were in our locker room. And the coaches, like, no, even our fans really probably didn't really believe that we was going to get all the way there. You know what I mean? So I feel like I'm forever connected to those guys.

38:53And, yeah, definitely Statings Moore, no question. So you set out the entirety of this last season. Yeah. And then the New York Knicks win the NBA championship. Do you think the Knicks would have won the chip if you were playing this year?

39:10I don't know, bro. I mean, like, do I think if I was healthy and we played them, would we win? Of course. I'm like a, I'm an NBA player. I'm a competitor. Anybody else in my situation would say the same thing. Um, but like, I understood like what they did in the playoffs was special. Like, I don't want anybody, like, I don't want to meet or like put down what that was. Cause that was like crazy. The whole run from like the Hawk series on, uh, was unbelievable. And like, it was like mixed feelings, you know, because like the Knicks, are they like our rival? Yes. But like, are those guys like, like I like those guys and like their friends.

39:44Yeah. At the same time, you know, like. I usually watch a finals celebration. Like I have before in my life. I always got to watch. Because that's a special thing, an emotional thing to watch guys win a championship and then celebrate with their families. I'm always like, man, that's fire. But when the Knicks won, I thought to myself, I got to turn this shit off. I can't watch it. But I told myself, because I was with YP and some friends, and they were like, you want us to turn it off? And I was like, you know what? Leave it on. Let me watch it. And to see Jalen celebrate with Allie, his wife, who me and my wife are friends with them and Allie and Jade are really close.

40:25To see that, I was like, that's awesome to see. You know what I mean? I was happy for him. To see Josh up there with his twins, that was cool to see. To see Carl up there with Jordan, that was awesome to see because these are all guys that I like. You know what I'm saying? So it's a weird feeling because are they our rivals? Yes. People are going to hear this. this clip's gonna go and I'm gonna be like man the NBA is so soft so I would have used to be yada yada sure but like when I see them when they see me on the court it's smoke they don't want they we hate each other when we're playing but like after that it's it's love um so like it was interesting it was like a weird feeling I feel like I felt every emotion I was angry uh but I was also happy I was sad that like I didn't get the opportunity to like compete in that I felt every emotion in that.

41:10So it was like a weird, a weird thing, but happy for those guys. And I look forward to being back. When you think about the journey that was like making the Olympic team, but they're not playing and then like taking your team to the finals and then losing and then sitting out the entirety of a season and then coming back this upcoming season and your very first game, not being a nationally televised game. How does that make you feel? You know, maybe I, like, view myself, of course I view myself higher than other people do because I like that I compete. I'm a competitor. I want to be the best. But, you know, I ain't really, I'm not tripping as much about it being on TV or not.

41:52I don't, we never play on national TV. Like, I'm sure the NBA was mad we had to be on national TV in the finals. Like, it's Indiana. I get it. I'm not tripping. I understand. I wish our first game was at home, like selfishly, because I would love to play my first game in front of a home crowd or whatever. I view our team probably higher than other people do. I think that we'll be right there competing for a championship again. But I know there's been a lot of movement in the East, the Knicks, the Celtics, the Sixers, I get all that. So I'm not naive to that. But, yeah, I thought it would be different.

42:29I did not think we'd be playing at New Orleans opening night. And people heard me say that, and they're like, oh, that's a dig at New Orleans. I don't care. Like, I don't care if people view it that way. Trey Murphy's my dog. DeJounte Murray has helped me a ton with my Achilles rehab. I like their team. I like those guys. I have nothing wrong with the city of New Orleans at all. I just thought that we – I mean, we only have a national TV game in the first week. You know what I'm saying? It's like four games in or something like that. Yeah, that's crazy to me. But I don't know. But why is it crazy to you?

43:01Because I feel like when you're one of the best teams, you should be on TV. Or you should be on TV. That's just fun, period. Okay, but let me play devil's advocate. The last we saw of the Pacers. The one 19 games. Right. Are the Pacers one of the best teams in the league? I think what you're trying to say without being overcommoned is you feel like you've done enough to earn a game that would be at home. Yeah. and nationally televised. But maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm wrong. Because you know what? After I said that, I went and looked. Dame, top 75 player of all time. One of the greatest players of my generation.

43:37Shout out to Dame. Their first game, not on national TV, but it's at the crib. So I said, you know what? Maybe I'm tripping. You know what? Because if they're not on national TV and he's coming back from the same injury, I get it. But I thought I'd been on national TV at least. Again, I like storylines, bro. I like the... So, like, to me, it was like, and I get LeBron James, the greatest player of all time. The Sixers are lit. Like, what they got going, their team is great. I thought there would have been nothing better than us playing them there on opening night. Nothing better. And maybe I'm tripping.

44:10Maybe people are going to hear this and be like, Tyrese, we don't want to watch the majors play the Knicks on opening night. But I feel like people would have been intrigued. And that's not even at the crib. That's at New York, which to me is like, they raised the banner. We sit there. Us as a team, we're like, damn. like we probably like we all feel like you know what like could have been us yeah yeah it would have been the storylines there but brawn at the garden that's a that's a storyline too so for sure but new orleans is a little i think so i think that was gonna happen do you think that like at every turn of your story from when you were a kid like there's been just like people like trying to humble you or like trying to give you adversity at every step for sure for sure i always say like Like, I always joke, like, nothing in my life has ever come easy, so why would it start now?

44:58You know what I'm saying? Like, that's real shit. Like, everything. Everything in my life. Like, for me to get here, like, people don't understand, like, where I'm from. Like, we talked about. There was nobody to look at. You know what I mean? Like, and I got cut from my AU team in eighth grade. I was not supposed to be shit. I had all smaller schools that turned into high majors my last tournament of AU. That's when I knew I was going to go to Iowa State. But then I was supposed to redshirt. I end up starting almost every game. You know, I mean like everything was like has been like this my whole life so I Mean, I don't know bro.

45:31It's just a part of my story in my life and like it just it plays into it Like of course, of course at this point people don't expect us to be shit expect me not to be shit when I come back Of course, it's gonna be that way, but that makes it fun. And then just like across the league like what do you think? the league looks like this year? You think it'll be competitive in the East, competitive in the West? What are your expectations? Yeah, I mean, I think the West has always been the superior conference to a sense, like my whole life. I think that people would view the West right now as Spurs-Thunder, who's coming out between those two teams, which I think is a fair way to view it.

46:07But I think Houston's pretty good. There's some good teams in the West that are up and coming and got stuff that they're building. Minnesota's with LaMelo and Ant. There's a bunch of teams in the West too, but the East I think is so interesting because I feel like dead ass. If I was like, put you in a coma right now, I don't want to do that. Say you're in a coma and then you woke up in June, I could say like any seven, eight teams made the finals and you'd be like, oh, you wouldn't be shocked. You know what I'm saying? Which I think is interesting because the parody of the league is in a great place and I like that.

46:41That makes it more exciting for me as an NBA fan. That's exciting for me. And as a competitor, that makes it fun too. Yeah, no, that's a good point. I can think of a few teams, at least five right now, that if they made the finals, I wouldn't be like, what? Yeah, yeah. Oh, okay. They made the finals. That makes it fun. My last question for you, just kind of summarizing what we've spoken about. Do you feel like Tyrese Halliburton is respected in the way that he should be?

47:11I mean, do I care completely? Not really, you know? I mean, at the end of the day, what I've learned in the last 12 months is it really takes a village to do anything successful. You've got to have good people around you. And after I got hurt, realized how many people have checked on me, checked on me, actually checked on me, how I'm doing, not just how you doing and keep it pushing, have came and visited me or whatever. that's what I like really value and what I really care about from people that I love and I respect that's what like matters to me um I don't know if like as a like as a competitor do I feel like I'll ever get the respect that I deserve probably not but I like I feel like I view it in a sense of like it doesn't really matter because like when we're we're like basketball like I can only play for a finite amount of time and then when I retire people are going to have debates and it won't really matter.

48:10Because it's all people's opinion and the way that they view the game of basketball. I hope that they respect the man that I am and the person I am. That's what matters more to me. As far as a basketball player, you can't please everybody, bro. Everybody's going to have a problem with my game or something that I do. I don't shoot enough. It doesn't look the way it's supposed to look. I don't defend well enough. It could be whatever. I don't care. As long as the people who are like my teammates and everybody, as long as they respect me, like that matters more to me. And like the guys who were like my superheroes to me growing up, KD, Steph, Bron, like go down the line.

48:47Like I feel like they respect me. And like in a game of basketball, if those guys respect me, I don't give a fuck what anybody else thinks. You know what I mean? Like truthfully. So I know it's a loaded answer, but it's kind of just the way I view it. If your heroes are respecting you, then who cares what anybody else has to say? That's what I'm saying. And, like, people I look up to, like, I can go down the line of all, like, especially those three, because, like, to me and my generation, those are, like, that's, like, the big three, you know? Like, when I got hurt, KD flew to Indy to visit me.

49:17Did he really? Yeah, he was out there for All-Star, but he came early to come see me. He came to my crib. He was chilling with my dog, throwing the toy with my dog, like, to check on me. Like, that, I was, like, KD's forever, like, we're forever cool. You know, like, Bron and Steph both, like, call him, check on me. Like, they were two of the only, like, When I got shingles and I said what I was going through, they both called me, check on me. LeBron, during the finals, I got so many voice memos from LeBron during the finals, which was the craziest thing ever. But that's the big three to me. So the fact that they show love, I'm like, in the world of basketball, what else matters?

49:54You know what I'm saying? Yeah, that's real. What is LeBron saying? Like motivational stuff at that time? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's funny. Because, again, he's like Jay, where they're like, OG. You know when you asked another word, slang word I don't like? I don't like Unk. Unk, yeah. It's a little too over you, like, it's a little too crazy at this point. You turn 21, people are like, Unk. Yeah, bro, stop. You lost your mind. But like, if anybody I can call Unk, it's Bronn. It's Bronn, you know what I'm saying? The voice memos are like, man, they're so funny. But like, you know, that was during the whole overrated thing.

50:23And like, Bronn was, that turned Bronn up. He liked that. So like that stuff was, that stuff's fun for me. So all that stuff is special. Right. Well, listen, man, congrats on a successful recovery. We're excited to see you back out there on the court, bro. Good luck this season. Appreciate it, bro.
