In short

Boob to Food’s final episode (episode 136) is a wrap-up and catch-up between hosts Luka McCabe and Kate Holm, reflecting on two years of parenting education and what listeners can do now (revisit the evergreen episode catalogue). They also share personal updates: Luka’s kid-free Bali trip while her husband celebrated his 40th in the Mentawais; Kate’s ongoing winter sickness cycle with her children and the emotional strain of school holidays.

Guests

No guests. Only hosts Luka McCabe and Kate Holm.

Key claims

The podcast isn’t disappearing—old episodes remain available; weekly guest production was more work than expected; parenting “noise” can be confusing, so the show aimed to provide practical, expert context.

Notable examples

Bali highlights (sleeping 12 hours, reading three books, scooter freedom); Kate’s children’s recurring colds/coughs and cancelled plans; favorite past guests include Lael Stone, Billy Garvey, Alex from Cornersmith (food waste), and Dr Stacey (dental health).

0:00Kate Holm:We acknowledge the traditional owners of the land on which we work and live, the Awabakal and Wurrimei people, and pay our respects to Elders past and present. We celebrate the stories, culture and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders of all communities who also work and live on this land. You're listening to Boob to Food, the podcast with Luka McCabe and Kate Holm.

0:31Kate Holm:There is so much noise in the parenting space and we don't mean the tantruming toddler. We understand it can feel confusing, conflicting and overwhelming. That's why we are bringing our years of experience as a midwife, nutritionist and naturopath and of course mums so that you

0:47Luka McCabe:can confidently navigate the roller coaster of motherhood from boob to food and beyond.

0:52Kate Holm:Each week you'll hear practical wisdom, expert advice and inspirational stories of other mums in the depths of this parenting journey.

1:00Luka McCabe:Let's dive in. Today's episode was brought to you by Once Upon. Hello and welcome back to Boob to Food, the podcast. And if you read the episode title, then you'll know that this is welcome to our final episode of Boob to Food, the podcast. Hello, Luca. Hello, Kate. How are you?

1:17Kate Holm:Yeah, pretty good. How are you feeling? Yeah, good. Just recently came back from Bali, kid free. Yes. But I was just saying to you off air, it was so nice so relaxing came home felt good and then came you know got straight off a red eye straight into parenting all day straight into will being sick yeah anyway felt like all the

1:40Luka McCabe:relaxation very quickly left my body well at least you would have like had your cup kind of full imagine if you had to parent for a week and then gone into that although you wouldn't have come off a red eye so who knows all i kept thinking on the red eye was i could have kids with me i could

1:56Kate Holm:have kids with me.

1:57Luka McCabe:Well, for those who missed on Instagram why you were in Bali, can we share?

2:03Kate Holm:Yeah, well, I surprised my husband because it's his 40th on this week and I thought, well, he's actually going to the Mentawis for a surf trip and I got shafted from that trip and I instead have the kids for two weeks while he goes there. Two weeks? Two weeks, I know. He said to me 10 days, turns out it's actually two weeks because, of course, there's two days travel time each way. I said this was not part of the deal. Wow, even ten days.

2:32Luka McCabe:You're good to agree to that.

2:34Kate Holm:Well, what can you say when it's their 40th? He's going to some surf island for two weeks. I don't know what, like obviously you surf, but he's not that fit. So I don't know what he's going to do. Anyway, and I thought, oh, I really planned, we did originally plan to go to Bali and with the kids and sort of have his 40th there. And then, yeah, that plan got shafted for this Mentowies. And then I just thought, actually, Stafford, I need a holiday. So I booked it mainly for myself but acted like it was a surprise for him. And did he get a nice surprise? He did. I told him the day we were leaving.

3:08Kate Holm:Yeah. And, yeah, it was a big mission getting all the kids sorted. We've never left them to go overseas. We've left them individually for, you know, a few days here and there. He's actually been overseas, sorry, but not together. and I had never. And Fleen just turned 10 and I just thought, you know what, I think that they're ready. Yeah. And, yeah, we organised different people from the family to have them. They got to sort of split, you know, a few days here, a few days here.

3:34Luka McCabe:Yeah.

3:35Kate Holm:It was so good. So nice. The kids were fine. Yeah. I think Will, you know, he's only four, but having the two older siblings, he coped fine.

3:42Luka McCabe:Yeah.

3:43Kate Holm:Because he still had that stability and he slept with Florence, bless him, every night instead of me. Oh, cute. I know. Oh, has that continued? Yes. Oh. To – Like, sleeping with Florence has continued? No, no, sorry. Back with me. And even worse, he's turned into a – that's different when you go away. They turn into a stage 10 clinger when you get home. But, yeah, he was fine. Like, when I was away, we would ring him and he was fine and happy. That's great. Yeah, I had a bit of, like, mum guilt before we left. And just thinking, oh, what if they get sick? You know, you think of all the what-ifs.

4:17Kate Holm:I had to remind myself, like, that we're family. There were people who we trust and love and who they love and, you know, if the worst comes to worst, it's a seven-hour flight.

4:26Luka McCabe:Yeah.

4:26Kate Holm:You know, it's not that long.

4:27Luka McCabe:Yeah. And so anyway, we went and we had a great time. Oh, what was the highlight? Oh, God, sleeping alone.

4:36Kate Holm:It was so funny. I was saying to Jessie, I slept so deep and I think, you know, even if I do get a rare night where Will's not in my bed, as a mum, you just sleep really light. You know, you're just always like someone could wake up. Someone, you know, you have to be on edge. And it was like that switch just got turned off when I was there and I would sleep 12 hours deep sleeping. Wow. Yeah, it was weird. That's like I'm not a deep sleeper at all and I'd wake up and think, oh, my God.

5:06Luka McCabe:Well, maybe you are a deep sleeper. You've just been a mum for a decade. Maybe. And a shift worker before that.

5:12Kate Holm:So that doesn't help. So, yeah. Like I don't have any problems sleeping, but I definitely wake up a lot and I'm quite alert a lot through the night. Anyway, so that was a real highlight. But I think the biggest thing was just the freedom. Like, you know, let's get on the scooter and just go here or go here and go here and do what we want. And talking to each other without being interrupted. Reading. I read three books. Wow. Yeah. It was so lovely just to switch off and, yeah, not be a parent, just think about ourselves.

5:45Luka McCabe:It was really nice.

5:46Kate Holm:So good to hear. Anyway, don't want to rub it in. How are you going?

5:51Luka McCabe:No trips to Bali here. It's nearly your 40th. I know, yeah, but, yeah, Immy's still very much in the bed with me. Honestly, my kids have been sick for probably two months. I'm just, like, in that, like, it feels as though one gets sick and then they get better and the next one gets sick and then they get better and then the next one gets sick and then it loops back around and starts again. Like it's actually been just so draining. Like not that it's any terrible sickness. It's just a cold and a cough and like, you know, all of the normal winter things. But just annoying because then we, you know, have had to like cancel plans that we've had, like not see friends.

6:30Luka McCabe:We've got lots of friends who have like really little babies or are pregnant or like, you know, had booked to go and do school holiday activities and had to cancel because they've got like just boogers pouring out their nose constantly and, you know, coughing all the time so it's been hard and then so many I mean I like a home day but not when it's like months on end and um I feel like Jude's at an age now where I can see he's sort of shifted out of you know he still loves having days at home and playing with Bowie and you know doing things as a family but he's just that bit older and he really really wants to be with his friends and that's been challenging like we're super lucky that we've got a really tight-knit community of neighbours and like similar age kids.

7:11Luka McCabe:So he's been mostly well and able to go and play. But honestly, like the girls, they're just, they're really emotional and whingy. And yeah, it's been, it's just been that. Certainly doesn't feel like Bali. No books have been read. I'm pretty much like, oh God, the night times. You know, when you have those nights where you're like, surely it must be nearly the morning. Amy was quite bad the other night. and I was like, oh, just check the time. Like, it must be close. 11.30 p.m. And I'd only gone to bed at 9.30. They haven't even slept. I'd just been in some, like, I don't know.

7:50Kate Holm:It's kind of a pro and a con when it's 11.30. Like, okay, well, there's still time to sleep, but then also, God, it's going long. Yeah.

7:58Luka McCabe:I know.

7:59Kate Holm:Winter sucks.

8:00Luka McCabe:Yeah, I know. And I've been saying, like, oh, it's been such a bad winter. But then I thought, actually, I think I said that last year too.

8:06Kate Holm:It's just, yeah, it's winter. What the go is. We need to move up north. I just keep seeing all of these people in, you know, T-shirts at the beach still and I don't think, oh, we live in a cold. The day we got home from Bali, it said four degrees feels like one. Oh, good.

8:22Luka McCabe:Yes, it does feel like one. It's freaking crazy. Especially coming from beautiful warm Bali and humidity. And just, yeah, the sickness is just rampant, isn't it? Yeah.

8:31Kate Holm:My kids are the same.

8:32Luka McCabe:Yeah.

8:33Kate Holm:And the friend thing is so frustrating. like yeah it just gets worse and worse too yeah the school holidays are hard because they're not content to be with you yeah they just want to see friends which I like seeing friends too but it's

8:46Luka McCabe:like not everyone's around every day yeah exactly and I feel for Bowie because she's she's just kind of well she's the middle child so you know she she does play with Immy but Immy's still really little and doesn't really know how to play like it's short-lived someone will crack it very quickly and Bowie absolutely adores Jude and she misses him all term when he's at school and then she's desperate to see him but he's just he'll still play with her but he's just not as interested as he once was and his priority is definitely like to get out and see a friend and she's just she's so sad about it and I feel terrible because I would love to be doing more with her but then I've been occupied by Immy being sick and so clingy and you know even when she's not sick she's still a baby essentially or at least she wants to be a baby um so yeah lots of big emotions lots of complaining actually my two big kids um had a sleepover with my in-laws last night which they've had my in-laws have stayed at our house before but it's the first time the kids have gone and stayed at their place they were really excited about that and having just Imogen at home like serving dinner it's like oh this feels actually so nice I put her bowl down in front of her and she's like oh thank you mommy thank you every time she'd take a piece she's like thank you mommy meanwhile the other two are like I don't like it I don't want this felt like basically no children even though she's sick she was so easy but I'd actually generally describe her as my hardest child but yeah I think not having the other two to kind of fight for the attention she was a dream so easy we'll be back after this short break today's episode is brought to you by once upon i absolutely love once upon for their beautiful photo books to capture all of the memories that i have on my camera roll and bring them into our home in real life maybe we need to make a podcast memory book

10:40Kate Holm:there won't be many photos for it true i do love once upon as well i've actually had a very genius idea. I don't know if it's genius or stupid. It's taking me a while. But Flynn has been like, you know, to get him more involved in the kitchen, I think I need to raise a man that knows how to cook. And also he can cook his own breakfast. We've been kind of making these recipes together. And they're very basic, like Flynn's smoothie, for example. And I said to him, if he does it, how about we can make a book out of them? And so I thought I might make like a mini version. Nicky makes different sizes of the Once Upon books.

11:22Kate Holm:And make a little book for him. That could be his like little recipe book. I love that.

11:27Luka McCabe:Jude is currently writing things, but his writing is more like art and poo written all over the house. But once we progress into recipes, that's such a nice idea. Yeah, well, what's your space? I'm going to create it.

11:41Kate Holm:I'll document the process, but I thought it would be cute.

11:43Luka McCabe:Yeah, and I mean, it's so nice. They have an app which is really easy to use and you can collaborate with other family members or friends to make books. So whether you've gone on a holiday or you want to just put together all of your photos from the year, it's such a nice thing to do. I know I've said it many times, but I do my annual photo book on New Year's Eve to reflect on the year that we've had.

12:03Kate Holm:Yeah, well, maybe Jude can collaborate and add into it a few poo recipes or something. I got the idea because we make art books and so basically all you have to do is take a photo of whatever you want and then upload that into the app it's really easy so I thought I'll just take

12:18Luka McCabe:a photo of the recipe and upload it yeah love it yeah and if you want to make one too you can use

12:24Kate Holm:the discount code boop to food 25 and that is valid until the 22nd of August we'll pop the link

12:30Luka McCabe:to the app in the show notes now let's get back to today's episode it's amazing how easy it is when you go from three to even two. Yeah.

12:39Kate Holm:Like, yeah, just taking one of the children away

12:41Luka McCabe:just makes life a lot easier. Love them all, wouldn't change it, but it's a really noticeable difference.

12:48Kate Holm:Oh, for sure. I know. And, yeah, she's in that really hard age at the moment, isn't she?

12:52Luka McCabe:Yeah, she is. She's, like, so cute and so communicative and just, like, everything about her, we just constantly look at her and we're like, oh, my God, she's so cute. She's so funny. She has so much to say, so much personality. but also will just completely whinge and yell and like make herself very known, wants to be held constantly, still wants to breastfeed 7 ,000 times. Like it's, yeah, it's really been full on. Although I did notice because she sucks her thumb, which I've been aware of and kind of like, oh, how am I going to break this habit? But she's been congested for so long that I realised I think she's not sucking her thumb anymore.

13:33Luka McCabe:I don't think she can breathe. when she does it. It only occurred to me yesterday. I'm like, oh, she usually does that to fall asleep. But she's, yeah, I think we've broken the habit. So there you go, mum hack.

13:44Kate Holm:That's how I weaned Flynn. Yes, I remember. He got a cold. He got a cold and didn't feed.

13:49Luka McCabe:Yeah, no, that one hasn't happened. But I'm pretty sure she's not sucking her thumb. So anyway, we'll see. Well, I was going to say watch this space. You can't watch this space. This is the last episode. Well, yeah, I guess like on that a little bit, I don't know if you guys are like worried about missing us or celebrating that you don't have to hear us anymore. No one cares. But we have, you know, over the last sort of, well, the podcast has been going for two years, a bit more than two years. And over the last year or six months, we've really made an effort to create a catalogue of episodes that are kind of evergreen around the topics that we get a lot of questions about here at Boob to Food.

14:29Luka McCabe:and so you know if as you're moving through a parenting journey as you have subsequent kids and you need to loop back around like this resource just because we're not going to be publishing new episodes the podcast isn't disappearing you can still come back and revisit the old episodes to still learn from us and have our voices in your ears should you want to um but yeah I don't know I've loved having the podcast personally what's your feeling about the end well it was always your baby your passion that you talked me into I have enjoyed it

15:02Kate Holm:there's definitely been things that I've enjoyed but to be honest I'm not that sad about it I think having a podcast is a lot more work than people maybe realise especially when we were doing like the guests every week and you know it's a lot of effort to research a guest make sure you're up to date with everything and questions and, you know, all of that. I've definitely loved getting to meet and talk to amazing people, which has been great. But I also probably won't miss it.

15:34Luka McCabe:I do not like listening back to my own voice at all.

15:37Kate Holm:I barely ever listen even when I'm meant to listen to them. When your husband sends me them to review, there's many I don't even listen to because I just can't. I start and I think I can't keep listening.

15:50Luka McCabe:I sound awful.

15:51Kate Holm:You don't. I feel like I do. But anyway, it's what it is. But it's sad as well that it's wrapping up. It's the end of an era. Definitely.

16:03Luka McCabe:And I think back to like naive me when I was pitching it to you. And I was like, you know, we can just like record like eight episodes in a day and then we'll only have to record once every two months. It's like, oh, my God, no way. It takes so much more prep work to find guests, yeah, research, you know, who to get on the podcast, research about them, write questions, like all of the stuff, edit the episodes, upload all of it. It's so many hours. And also having conversations like that, we were ending up feeling so brain dead if we did like three or four in a row. It's really, yeah, great conversations but also really quite taxing which I hadn't anticipated.

16:43Luka McCabe:But I've loved it. I mean, I really love education and as much as, yes, I cringe at the sound of my own voice, I've really, really appreciated the opportunity to share information I guess like our reason behind the podcast was to add that additional context that you can't necessarily get in an Instagram post or in a blog post and you know I guess maybe the personality or the voice behind what we're trying to say and so I've really really loved being able to do that and there's been so much beautiful feedback from people who really have enjoyed it much to your dismay like why um but yeah I'm I'm really sad to see it go do you think you'd ever do a podcast again no I was just trying to work out how I sell this equipment so get it out of my life I'll keep it if I ever need it up my sleeve yeah I have a random rogue announcement every now and then that I pop up

17:41Kate Holm:no I've realized I don't think I'm a very good interviewer I prefer to be on the other side a lot good no i just my brain just the whole time is like what do i say next which is funny in a conversation i don't feel like that yeah i think because it's the pressure element that you have to be ready and then you're trying to listen to someone talk but you're also half thinking okay what do we ask next yeah it's definitely a skill so hats off to people that yeah really well but i am very proud of us we did yeah over two years i think of every week episodes yeah so i think we

18:13Luka McCabe:We did pretty good. This is episode 136.

18:17Kate Holm:Yes, okay.

18:18Luka McCabe:Yeah. And we had, I don't know where it's at now, but it's over a million downloads, which is just wild to think about that, you know, there's a million times or more than a million times our voice has been in people's ears, which I just, I can't actually fathom. That's a lot.

18:34Kate Holm:That's a lot, isn't it?

18:35Luka McCabe:Yeah. It's sad. Sad, but, yeah, here you can always flick back through the episodes. Do you have a favourite?

18:43Kate Holm:I think my two favourite people to have on the podcast were always Lael Stone and Billy Garvey. I always loved listening from them, learning from them.

18:52Luka McCabe:I just thought it was so amazing that we got to talk to them

18:55Kate Holm:and make friends out of it too, which is really cool. I think, honestly, one of my favourite episodes though was Alex from Cornersmith when we talked about food waste.

19:05Luka McCabe:Yeah, she was your kindred spirit. She was.

19:07Kate Holm:I don't know. I really liked that episode. I got a lot out of it. and or I guess we actually had a few arguments on there as well about things. The chest freezer. I don't know. I like what she's about and I just found that episode really interesting. I also really liked Dr Stacey just I think because I have got no idea about dental health and I found that episode really interesting too.

19:31Luka McCabe:Yeah, I liked that one too. How about you? Yeah, answered a lot of questions that we commonly get and that I had myself but in a way that was not scary. like it felt doable and I've still kept up my flossing since that episode yeah but yeah I'm same as you Lael and Billy I just adore speaking to them and I learn so much from them as well yeah I've loved a lot of the chats I'm trying to think back through all of the episodes actually I really loved it was one of our early episodes with Ashley Warner talking about how you don't have to entertain your kids that's something that I actually still recommend to my clients now I think a lot of mums need to hear that that you don't have to be this like on the floor creative like animated role play all the time um it was a really good reminder that would have been in our first 10 episodes I think like really early on um and actually I've loved the episodes that are just you and I as well doing our like yeah more educational chats that we've done recently around those just little bite-sized topics that so many people have questions about so it's nice to be able to clarify and kind of expand on things obviously instagram is useful but when you have you know i mean they've given you more slides now but used to be 10 slides and a tiny caption um you can't always capture everything so that's always been really nice but yeah we've had so many wonderful guests we've had a few shockers too handful of episodes that yeah didn't didn't make it to air or handful of episodes that needed a lot of editing but we won't name any names you can go back through the entire catalog and see if you can figure out which ones they are look some people just I think they freeze under pressure it's still amazing people yes yep but yeah it's been it's been great I've I've really really loved it it's been such a

21:22Kate Holm:nice experience it has been nice and nice chatting to you nice that'll be one sad thing that ends

21:27Luka McCabe:yeah I know yes we'll have weekly visits but you know what we were always so weird when we'd have to like talk to each other socially because I know that both of us have felt like well I can't actually tell you things now because I need to save it for the podcast so at least now when we catch up we can just like talk be normal not try to withhold information to to share on the podcast

21:51Kate Holm:that's true well on that note we'll love you and leave you thanks for being here for all 136 six episodes. Yeah. We've loved the experience and, yeah, feel free to go back, have a listen to any of the episodes. We'll obviously leave them there. If you want to keep up with our social lives, I guess maybe we can link our personal Instagrams and then you can keep up with what we're doing day to day. And obviously, Brew to Food's still running, so you can always keep up with us there. Anyway, thank you. Thank you for listening and, yeah, speak to you soon. No, we won't. No, we won't.

22:30Kate Holm:I don't like goodbyes.

22:35Kate Holm:Thank you for listening to Boo to Food, the podcast. We hope this episode made you feel inspired, confident, and less overwhelmed in your parenting journey.

22:43Luka McCabe:Head to the show notes for all the resources mentioned on today's episode. And if you loved this podcast, please remember to subscribe, rate, and review. See you next week. Bye.

23:01Thank you.
