1:44Judi Dench:well, you'd have me in a bottle. Relaxed. Alan, you once took a glass back because you said, and I quote, it was judging you.

3:11Judi Dench:Very good indeed.

3:12Alan Carr:You've got to be in it to win it.

3:14Kate Hudson:And we're also, we're on a mission, aren't we, to solve your wine dilemmas, make it accessible for you. and we've solved so many so far. People have been writing in in their droves for us to help them out, basically.

3:28Judi Dench:We're missions and we're in a... We're missionaries. In a missionary position. If you want us to solve your dilemmas, then please do get in touch with us. How can they do that? How can they do that, Alan? My name's Alan. I am your co-host. How can they do that, Alan?

3:48Alan Carr:Well, Lee, thank you for asking. How do they?

3:52Kate Hudson:They can email bottomsup at listen.co.uk. If they're a little bit more traditional, pop on the little email. Or they can at us at bottomsupshow on socials.

4:02Alan Carr:Yeah, we're here. If you're a bit like us, sometimes you're online buying wine or you're in the off-licence and you're like, oh, what do I go for? Well, we're going to help you choose better. Save yourself some money. Go for that hot vineyard, that hot grape, that hot area.

4:18Kate Hudson:Branch out. And also, as if you watched last week's episode with the brilliant Alex James, you will know that this episode later on is getting interactive. So if you have popped out to the shops and got the wine and the bits that we said, then get ready because later on, we're going to be uncorking them together and you can drink along with us. Right. If you haven't seen this show, you'll know that we start with a welcome drink. And this week I have chosen this.

4:45Judi Dench:It's called Ami. Now that logo looks familiar You've brought that round my house I have We had a rosé

4:51Kate Hudson:Not too long ago Because last week We were saying Weren't we That I was like I'm done I'm done with Whispering Angel And we ended up choosing Well you and Alex Chose the Screaming Devil Was it? Screaming Devil That's right So this is Ami Now we brought I brought this round And you really loved the rosé Now it's from the Black Farmer Which actually we're recording In the broadcaster We love it here Don't we? But opposite is a gorgeous little place called the Black Farmer. It's just like food, wines, gorgeous little kind of artisan bits that you can pick up.

5:22Alan Carr:And people won't believe this, but we like the salad bar there.

5:25Kate Hudson:We really like the salad bar. I do.

5:27Alan Carr:Didn't I have something green

5:29Judi Dench:in my, what's it called, the tray? You add a couple of green things and then you add quite a lot of the jerk potato salad. So we... Oh, I didn't know you were watching me eat like some weirdo. But listen, I then saw this bottle of wine. Do they, that salad bar, is it by weight? No, no. This is what I love about the salad bar. But why wasn't you putting the jacket, the jerked potatoes in? What do you mean?

5:54Alan Carr:It's like when you go to the cinema and then you put the fudge in. Hello, you're 200 pounds.

6:00Kate Hudson:Yeah, yeah. My mum used to be like, you're not having the snake weight too heavy. Yeah. The snake is too heavy.

6:06Alan Carr:What, those flying saucer ones? Yeah. They'd fill your boots with it. They were nothing.

6:10Kate Hudson:They were like, air. You'd fist the cup down. You'd be like, you'd push it down. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. Because when it was by cup, that was like, yeah.

6:17Alan Carr:Because I think with the flying saucer ones, actually the cinema owned you because they were so light. The fudge and the toffee, schoolboy error.

6:27Kate Hudson:Yeah, yeah, totally. You want the little like foamy ones, don't you? The flumps.

6:32Judi Dench:Flumps are great. Yeah. Gob stoppers. No way. Stop, stop, stop. You'll end up remortgaging your house. Exactly. Well, anyway, back to the wine. we can't I wish I wish he has a god stopper oh so I did joke come on then pour the wine start pouring

6:52Alan Carr:because I'm snoring

6:57Judi Dench:I like I know you like that's a bumper sticker I know I know you like

7:04Kate Hudson:I know you like a red so I got you because I know you like the Ami I got you they've done a red as well so this is And I've never heard of this. We could ask our wine expert who's coming on later. But it's a Carignan. Carignan? What? It's a great variety. Carignan, I want to say, which I found in Spain and I think the USA. But this is France. So it's a great variety. It's apparently quite similar to a Cabernet Sauvignon.

7:35Alan Carr:And you know what? You know I'm very shallow. People who watch the podcast or listen to it know I love a label. I am loving the Picasso-esque drawing. And I would be drawn to that. It's very simple. Look at that.

Read the full transcript

7:48Kate Hudson:Yeah, apparently they want... The couple that made it, the run the company, they wanted something that looks kind of, you know, high-end. It does look high-end. Shall we have a taste of it? Oh, I love the smell. The smell is, yeah. So it's, like I said, it's similar to what Cab Sav. Mmm. What do you think of that?

8:08Alan Carr:Oh! Oh my God.

8:11Judi Dench:That's so nice.

8:13Alan Carr:Do you love it?

8:13Judi Dench:I'm going to cry.

8:14Alan Carr:You were going to cry. It's like you were talking about the Norman lights and you cried the other day. Oh, no. This is so tasty. I know.

8:20Kate Hudson:I knew it would be because when I had that rosé, I was like, oh. So I just, do you know what?

8:25Judi Dench:When I opened this, I got a bit nervous because I was thinking, I really hope you like this. It's funny when you get like, you know, and you love a bottle of wine and then you try like another one, like a rosé or a white. Now, please don't mess it up. So what's been going on? What's happening?

8:37Alan Carr:him well i'm a bit of a weirdo even though that's it that's fine yeah you heard it here first i'm just getting in there before people say it but what's new go on you know i don't like films i find them boring they're not about me why am i sitting here i could be doing something me related i've been here for three hours and films ain't like they used to be now three hours and listen And that Leonardo DiCaprio last one, My Arse Does Not Do Epics.

9:09Judi Dench:Is that the name of the show? Yes. I preferred the sequel.

9:16Judi Dench:Well, I'm going to campaign. You know when we campaign for... Putting the camp into campaigning. Putting the pain into it. Camp and pain.

9:27Kate Hudson:What, would you prefer camp? Anyway, I campaign for walking lanes, fast walking lanes. I will also campaign for intervals in films. Yes. Like, that's what I think.

9:37Judi Dench:I think it's too long. It's too long to sit there. Do you think we've not got the attention span? Pardon?

9:44Alan Carr:Sorry. I'm like... Just put my candy crush away. Yeah, but I do like the Oscars. Yes, there's something about it. And even though I haven't seen any of it, although I have seen one of the films... Well, you've got a list there, haven't you? You go on. I spoiled the magic.

10:04Alan Carr:Emma Stone in Begonia. That is, now for me who has no attention span, that film is amazing. That film should win everything. Hamnett, now everyone's buzzing about Jesse Buckley and Hamnett, but have you heard people feel that they have been manipulated? What do you mean? People get quite angry. It's so emotional. When they leave, they feel like they've been played. Now she's tipped, she's won a gold. She's a fantastic actress, Jesse Buckley.

10:30Kate Hudson:Well, you know, and I remember her from, what was it?

10:35Judi Dench:Do you? I remember her from... From How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria. Oh, yeah, she was from I Do Anything.

10:43Kate Hudson:Yeah, it was I Do Anything.

10:44Judi Dench:Oh, it was I Do Anything. I don't remember her from I Do Anything.

10:51Kate Hudson:Yeah, well, the same thing with Oliver.

10:53Judi Dench:It's not, it's a different musical.

10:55Kate Hudson:Yeah, she was auditing. And you remember, Andrew Lloyd Webber was desperate for her to win. Do you remember how fuming he was when Jodie Pranger won it? Do you remember? No. Well, I do. Wow. Good for you.

11:08Alan Carr:And, yes, Jessie Boat Hamley.

11:10Judi Dench:I was going to say about Jessie. And then I saw her in Cabaret. Well, I never saw her. I saw Eddie Redmayne, but she was off. She was off.

11:17Alan Carr:Oh, because her and Eddie Redmayne, it was the best bit of theatre I've ever seen. No, I know.

11:21Kate Hudson:I thought Eddie was great, but I was annoyed it was her understudy.

11:24Alan Carr:I can see you as MC. That is a role I would love to play. Thank you for saying that. Is he like sinister, a bit dubious, a bit dodgy? What's he up to? I don't trust him. You'd be perfect. And then we've got Renata Remsve. Sentimental value. Never heard of it, but I'm sure it's good. Yeah. Kate Hanson.

11:46Judi Dench:This Oscars coverage is brilliant. And I will be on the red carpet in Hollywood. Who are you?

11:53Alan Carr:Never heard of it. Lee's got an interesting anecdote, Jesse, about what? The sound of music. The sound of music. No, but Kate Hudson's Song Sung Blue. Now, I have a lot of time for Kate Hudson. I was a bit drunk and tried to gatecrash a party that Judi Dench was hosting.

12:14Lee Peart:How?

12:16Alan Carr:Well, I was walking past and I was a bit pissed and I had this music coming out and I thought, oh, that sounds like a good party. And I go in there and the man goes, you're not coming in, you're pissed. I was like, how rude. Hello? And as I walked out, I bumped into her, Kate Hudson. She went, Alan, oh my God, I chatted you on Chatty Man. I said, yeah. I said, they won't let me in that party. You come with me. So we walked through and she went, my friend Alan Carr is on the list. And I went like that to the man. Yeah. Yes. And I went in and I vomited over Judi Dench. No, no, I didn't. I went in there and I partied and it was a free bar.

12:55Alan Carr:And she was super sweet. Kate or Judi? I didn't speak to Judy. Oh, you left Judy alone. Well, I'm taking the piss. I'm at a party already that I shouldn't even be invited to. I'm not going to start working the room. Judy, darling. Jude, thanks. I'm drunk. Thanks for the invite. So, you know, it's been pretty cold recently. I'm in the park and this woman who I do see sometimes, I've got my two dogs in the park, she comes up to me, minus one. I said, oh, I know, but at least the sun's out. No, minus one. I put my dog down. Oh, God.

13:31Judi Dench:She was minus one dog. She wasn't saying the temperature. And I'm like, huh? I'm like, yes.

13:40Alan Carr:But she was like, you know, those posh people have that up.

13:44Kate Hudson:Yeah, well, she's very much like, morning, minus one.

13:47Alan Carr:Yes, like that. And I went, oh, I know, at least the sun's out. But I had another posh dog walker. I've lost my dog. I've lost my dog. I said, oh, my God, let me help you look for it. it's liver coloured what the fuck liver coloured oh I know and she's 14 but looks about 8 so I'm looking for dogs that's had work done I just think you're not in the real world no they live in a whole different other status sphere

14:14Kate Hudson:it's like Saltburn I want to be like Saltburn you know the posh woman

14:20Judi Dench:from Saltburn walk around a stately home

14:21Alan Carr:with your cock out

14:22Judi Dench:you've done that before we can't go back to Blenheim Palace I could do that at your castle walk around naked yes no way why not not with me objadar everywhere might put the price up and the value right it's the only thing that will be going up

14:45Judi Dench:there I've said it we're all thinking it I'll tell you what I am thinking about St. Patrick's Day St. Paddy's Day now we is that what they call it listen Look at you, down with the Irish. How do you say? Do you celebrate St. Patrick's Day? Do you like a bit of a, do you like a Guinness?

15:08Judi Dench:I don't. I don't like a Guinness. I'm not really a Guinness person. I don't really know what Guinness is.

15:16Kate Hudson:No, what is Guinness? Is it like malt or something?

15:19Alan Carr:Is it like a... Mold.

15:21Judi Dench:Do you know the weird thing?

15:23Alan Carr:don't like Guinness but I love Guinness soda bread.

15:27Judi Dench:Oh, and they do Guinness cake as well, don't they? Yes. See, it's funny

15:30Alan Carr:because do you know what? This is so boring

15:32Judi Dench:but I'm going to say it anyway. Can't wait.

15:35Alan Carr:Great. I hate coffee.

15:38Kate Hudson:It's one thing we don't have in common, isn't it? Because I love coffee. I'm a coffee guy.

15:43Judi Dench:You are a cup of tea all the way. I hate coffee and yet I will have coffee cream in the Quality Street and a tiramisu. And an espresso martini.

15:52Lee Peart:An espresso martini and a Nescafe and a gold blend.

15:57Judi Dench:Something tells me you like coffee. I know. Hate it. Not for me. God, stand it. Because I got that Nespresso. Yeah. And I don't know how it works. Well, wasn't there a rumour about you?

16:11Kate Hudson:There was a rumour. Which I will say is untruth. I'm the first to throw you under the bus, but I will... Thank you, darling. Thank you.

16:19Judi Dench:But I will say... I am the first to stab you in the back, but even that was too much. No, I said, this isn't true. What was it? It was on a gossip website.

16:31Alan Carr:I am tight and someone's come around my house, I don't know who they are, but they said to a gossip website, I am so tight, even though I have a posh coffee machine, I give people instant because I don't want to use the pods.

16:46Kate Hudson:Yeah. And it can never, it always kind of alludes to, doesn't it? Which camp funny man who wears glasses doesn't offer his guests the posh pods, offers them the instant? But where do you get the pods from?

17:00Alan Carr:And I don't trust it. You put a pod in, it doesn't, I don't get it.

17:03Judi Dench:Which means you don't trust it. You don't trust a coffee machine. Well, no, how does it work? Where's the extra pods? Where do the pods go? No, but they were saying that you give yourself the pods and you give them instant. I don't. I don't even know, it's just there, it's an ornament.

17:19Alan Carr:I don't know how to use it. Well, listen, all this coffee chat's getting me nowhere. Come on, shall we?

17:26Judi Dench:What are we doing with Guinness? Are we splitting a watch?

17:29Kate Hudson:So I think it's important to be honest here. Neither of us knew what this was. And our lovely producer, Harry, said, do you want to split the G? And I went, yeah. Which is apparently a viral trend.

17:44Judi Dench:And Dua Lipa did it recently.

17:46Alan Carr:I love Dua Lipa. It's great if you want to know what other words are in other countries.

17:53Judi Dench:I'm always on Dua Lipa. So you do this thing.

18:00Kate Hudson:You do this thing where you down the Guinness. I thought you down it or you don't. You drink it from a Guinness cup with the logo and you have to kind of guess. You know like the Whitney Houston trend where you have to bang the drum where you think it's going to come in? Where it's like... Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. You have to guess where and you have to get the foam so it completely splits the letter G.

18:23Judi Dench:It's a challenge. It's a challenge.

18:25Alan Carr:I get it.

18:25Judi Dench:Shall we do it? Yeah, let's do it. All right. Let's split that G. This is called Split the G.

18:32Alan Carr:Hello, G. Prepare to be split. Ready yet? Oh.

18:39Judi Dench:Oh. Okay. Oh, no. It's like a bush took a trial.

18:50Lee Peart:What's your... Okay. That's disgusting.

19:00Judi Dench:Can I still keep going? No, you have to do it in one go, so that's where you've got to. That's where you've got to.

19:11Lee Peart:I've split the heart.

19:16Alan Carr:Okay. Got so much more to go. I would have been sick. Oh, no. I'll wash it down.

19:27Judi Dench:Okay, so I'm appointing this here. It's hard work. You've got to keep going through it.

19:31Kate Hudson:I don't think I've really ever drunk Guinness properly. All right, here we go. So split the G.

19:40Kate Hudson:He's so manly.

19:42Alan Carr:Oh, my God, look at you. Oh, fuck. Oh, close. Well, we gave it a good go, at least. Yeah, and do you know what? There's one more thing left to say. Happy Paddy's Day. Yes. Bottoms up. Bottoms up.

20:03Alan Carr:If you get in a tiz with your tin toes And muddled with your Malbecs Do not fret We're here to help, aren't we Lee?

20:11Kate Hudson:We are indeed And as ever we're answering your dilemmas And we have one this week from Beth in Wilmslow Now I will say, Wilmslow, top end, nice It's posh, it's posh So, hi Alan and Lee I am seven months pregnant And majorly Don't look at me majorly missing wine. I've been smashing the nose echo, but it just isn't cutting it. I've been loving the podcast and noting down all the wine recommendations for when the baby arrives and I can enjoy a few glasses again on the final countdown. Now, if you hadn't been able to drink wine for nine months, what would be top of your list to have once you could drink again?

20:54Kate Hudson:Well, firstly, Beth, congrats, I will say that. If you want to avoid this, I would say just do not get pregnant. We can't lose any more people to this cruel disease.

21:04Judi Dench:I know, I know.

21:06Alan Carr:That's nine months of sales we're going to lose. But that's fine. But just think about it next time. Yeah, yeah. Don't be so selfish. But then my mum, when she was pregnant with me, smoked, drank and took heroin.

21:20Kate Hudson:And it shows.

21:24Kate Hudson:Just FYI, she didn't. Do you think she'd be more offended at that? Skin and smoke.

21:32Alan Carr:Now, listen, can I just say with my mum, I love my mum, but I recently said an interview that Aunt Bessie was more of a mum to me than my mum. And I didn't know my mum actually read the interviews and she sent me a text that went, Aunt Bessie? And I went, I love my mum. My mum is a great cook and Aunt Bessie was not like... My real mum, I can't believe I'm saying it.

22:03Judi Dench:But I felt bad. I didn't know my mum really. I went, mum, can I just say, you're using this episode

22:08Kate Hudson:as like a right of reply for all the things. I don't give cheap coffee to people. I'm sorry, my mum.

22:15Judi Dench:What's wrong? Why are you trying to explain it? I don't even like wine.

22:19Alan Carr:I'm just trying to quash all those rumours that I'm an arsehole.

22:23Kate Hudson:And it's not working. Right. Well, firstly, let's answer a question. What would be top of our list to have a drink if we couldn't drink for nine months? So say you were in a coma or something like, what's the first drink? If you got pregnant, you can't drink for nine months. What's your first one? I'm going to say it's Malbec. It's Malbec.

22:41Alan Carr:It's a red. It's a nice red from Argentina, Mendoza. I go for that every time I see it on the menu. People who've watched and listened to this podcast will know that. So yeah, for me, I'm already going to say a Malbec.

22:54Kate Hudson:Yeah, for me, not to be like awkward, but it would depend on the time of year. All right. So if it was the height of summer, it would be a lovely, pale, nice rosé. If it was, yeah, if it was wintertime, a red. Yeah. But this podcast has made me really into my Pinot Noirs. I don't know. It's a revelation. I do think I've just been stuck on the Malbec train. Why are you pouring three? Oh my God.

23:25Judi Dench:Oh no! Well, we'll save that for our wine expert later on. Yes, that'll be Helena. Lovely Helena's coming back.

23:33Kate Hudson:But we've poured here, right, so we've got three here. Focus. Champagne. We've got a Chablis and we've got a Malbec. So red, white, white, and we've got a Champers. We've got Bubbles as well.

23:45Alan Carr:I think if I'd had a baby, this would be perfect.

23:49Kate Hudson:Well, it says after nine months off, you don't ease back in quietly. You pop. and this is classic and celebratory and something to really mark the occasion. All your money gone on nappies, this one's a steal. It's, oh, oh, okay.

24:01Judi Dench:Hold on, before I say this, how, is it nice? It's so lovely. What is it called? Compte, what? This is Lidl's own Compte de...

24:10Kate Hudson:Lidl? It's Lidl de Sennevel, which has been voted better than Moet, which apparently you say, you don't say Moet. And it's only£13.99. It has a lively mousse with notes of biscuit, lemon and green apple. That is very... Because I was chatting to a wine expert ages ago and they said with a lot of champagne, you pay for the label. You just pay for the label.

24:36Alan Carr:That is delicious. Yeah, that is delicious. And that's from Lidl.

24:38Kate Hudson:And yeah, and it retails at around£13.99. So again, you've just had a baby. I mean, she lives in Wilmslow. So I think Beth's doing all right for herself. Yes. But it's a cost of living crisis. All right. Yes. Living. Or as I say, living. Well, let's move on. We're moving on now to the Shablis. Just a reminder here, Alan, if you could just pour two glasses of this, that would be great.

25:04Alan Carr:Would you like a glass?

25:09Alan Carr:My imaginary friend is my designated driver.

25:19Alan Carr:No, she's not drinking.

25:21Judi Dench:Right answer.

25:24Kate Hudson:Oh, God, you're so silly. Okay, Chablis, this is a sophisticated comeback. You're a mum now, Beth. That's what they've said. You're a mum now, Beth. After nine months of sweetness, Eko, you might be craving something crisp, mineral, and grown up. This Chablis is clean and dry and has a crisp apple, lemon peel, and a stony, almost salty finish. This one's a bit more spenny, apparently. Oh, you're on higher end there at$19.50. a bottle. Ooh, that's quite a lot. But you've just grown a human, so I think that's fair. And I will say, what do they call it now? A push present. What?

26:01Judi Dench:A push present. A push present? You've not heard of this? No. It's called a push present. Oh God, they make this shit up. What is it?

26:09Kate Hudson:The men are meant to buy now, the women, something called a push present. So they're meant to get them a gift. For pushing out the baby. For pushing out their baby.

26:19Judi Dench:For pushing out their child. Well, yeah, because the women are doing all the work and they're like going through all that. What do you think?

26:27Alan Carr:I just don't like the whole... I just don't like the whole...

26:35Alan Carr:Let me finish. No, I don't... Oh, no, we're going to get letters now. I don't say, let me finish. I don't like the whole... the whole commercialization of a vagina. No, it is, isn't it? Well, no. It should be like an organic and amazing experience, but now you're like, oh, come on, push, you get a present.

27:00Kate Hudson:You know, it's not like that. It's not like there's someone there, like the harder you push, the value goes up in the present. I want a Lamborghini.

27:10Alan Carr:I don't know. I think I'm a traditionalist, and I think babies and births. What was the question? I think just let it, yeah. I don't think it should be like, it's not fucking pointless. No, but what? What are you talking about?

27:31Alan Carr:What are we saying? Do you know what? Okay, if you like a white wine, I think you will like that. I just don't like a white wine.

27:38Kate Hudson:I really like that, to be fair. It is lovely. And it's very drinkable. I think because I'm going to take, she's been drinking Niseko for so long, she might be sick of bubbles. I know there are different types of bubbles.

27:49Alan Carr:Yeah, yeah, I get that, I get that.

27:51Kate Hudson:So maybe she might want just a nice crisp glass of white.

27:55Judi Dench:This is Helena over there is swallowing sick,

27:59Alan Carr:but I'm moving the champagne to the Chablis because I, like a dick, poured an extra wine for someone who wasn't there, but I thought was a ghost. so i'm gonna do that okay stop judging me please

28:18Kate Hudson:we're moving on to your favorite it's a malbec after nine months away we'd be gagging for a malbec wouldn't we and after all that restraint you don't tiptoe back in you go bold you go juicy plush and properly satisfying this is the i've earned this glass it's an argentinian malbec from Mendoza, your favourite Alan. Velvety in texture, it's round, smooth and full flavoured with spicy aromas, smooth tannins and rich plums and cherries. That one.

28:47Judi Dench:So this is£7.50. This is£7.50. This is£7.50. I got that the fourth time.

29:02Judi Dench:Oh God. Let's just carry on. It's£7.50. Beth, Beth's having a baby, for God's sake. You're having a baby. I'm having a baby. Do you know what? This is going to take nine months for us to get through this if we're not careful. Yeah, I know, I know.

29:15Kate Hudson:So,£7.50, okay? Ooh, how much?

29:19Alan Carr:£7.50?

29:21Kate Hudson:So,£11 usually, but it's discounted down. Waitrose to£7.50. That's bloody good. Because I always think that's a good tip. If you ever look at discounts, you see what it was before. You know, when it's like special offer.

29:33Alan Carr:But we're taught as a society, you look at something that's gone down in value, it's not good. But this,£7.50 for this, ooh, do you know what? I will say though, I drink that.

29:46Kate Hudson:I would never have guessed that was a Malbec. I don't think that tastes like a usual Malbec. It's a little bit lighter

29:54Judi Dench:and it's a little bit sweeter for me than usual, but I still love it. Now that for me tastes like a Malbec. Oh really? Oh, I don't get that.

30:01Alan Carr:Yeah. Our producer is telling us to move on. He's basically saying the baby is now doing its GCSEs.

30:12Alan Carr:And has now moved into higher education. Graduated. Married with a kid itself.

30:24Alan Carr:Okay, I'm going to go, do you know what? Love a Malbec. Which you...

30:30Kate Hudson:This. And it's cheap and it's gorgeous. I'm inclined to agree. I do love that Malbec. And I really fancy that Chablis. But I will say, I think there's no better occasion. Champagne signals, boom. You've popped it every occasion, like Alex James said last week.

30:47Alan Carr:He said for every occasion, bubbles, bubbles, bubbles, celebration. Even if we're indoctrinated to think that, oh, bubbles and champagne. That is lovely and refreshing. And you know what? You've just given birth to a child. Oh, enjoy it Enjoy it, Beth

31:02Judi Dench:Best of luck We wish you all the best And Alan is a lovely name For a child

31:11Kate Hudson:Cheers, Beth Bottoms up That's not medical advice for the birth We don't know how it works

31:19Judi Dench:If you've done it in the first place, you wouldn't be pregnant

31:31Alan Carr:Now joining us is a woman who knows her way around a wine bottle. Last time she was here, she compared me to a Beaujolais, expensive, classy and perfect for every occasion. She compared Lee to a rosé that goes down easily. It's Helena Nicklin. How are you? Hi.

31:54Jessie Buckley:I'm really well, thanks. Good to be back.

31:56Kate Hudson:How are we getting on, Helena?

31:58Jessie Buckley:I'm a bit scared. Right.

32:00Kate Hudson:You've been watching some of the previous bits.

32:03Jessie Buckley:Do you think we've learnt anything? Yeah, sort of. Yes, you have. Your pronunciation's got quite good as well, I've noticed. I know, because that is difficult, that.

32:13Kate Hudson:Yeah, you're knowing how to say it and you don't want to look stupid. And am I right where it's like actually Mwet-a-Chandon? Yes, correct. But do you sound like a bit of a wanker where you say it?

32:22Alan Carr:So is it Mwet-a-Chandon?

32:23Kate Hudson:Yeah, because isn't it Dutch? Mwet, originally Mwet. And that's how you would say it.

32:27Judi Dench:Mwet-a-Chandon. Is that like Mwet Wipes? Yeah, yeah, yeah.

32:32Kate Hudson:And that band you love, Mwet, Mwet, Mwet.

32:34Judi Dench:Mwet, Mwet, Mwet.

32:37Kate Hudson:Love is all around.

32:38Alan Carr:And is it like that, what's it called, that song? Mwet as Pussy. I've been rapping it wrong. I feel so stupid at that karaoke.

32:51Judi Dench:There's some whores in this house.

32:54Alan Carr:I've got this Mwet as Pussy.

32:56Kate Hudson:now listen we teased last week that so many so many people have got in touch and thank you so much for doing so if you do want to get in touch it's bottoms up at listen.co.uk or please do dm us at bottoms up show on socials and i think overwhelmingly a lot of people have said we would love to drink along with you we would love to you know some people listen to us on the commute fine whatever don't drink on the tube or whatever but um a lot of people want to sit down with a glass and kind of go along with us. So we've teased it that this is interactive. What are we doing this week?

33:30Jessie Buckley:Well, you've already touched on Old World and New World with Libby, I noticed, with the sparkling wines a while ago. But I thought we'd actually see what that really tastes like in the glass with some still dry red wines today.

33:40Kate Hudson:Okay. And so people have gone out and they've bought a bottle of Little Giant, if you're tasting along with us. And what is this one?

33:47Jessie Buckley:This is a Cav de Tannes, a Croze Humitage. Right. So the thing to know here is these are the same grapes but one is called Syrah, one is called Shiraz. Yeah, I don't really know what Syrah is. Yeah, Syrah's a grape, Shiraz is a grape, they're actually the same grape but when it went over to Australia all those years ago there was a pronunciation error.

34:06Kate Hudson:Ah, so is it like when Jif turned to Sif?

34:10Jessie Buckley:Yes.

34:11Kate Hudson:Opal fruit, starburst.

34:13Alan Carr:And I do like Jif as a shot.

34:18Jessie Buckley:Shabliesque, I'd say. Very citrusy.

34:20Alan Carr:My insides, you could eat your dinner off.

34:23Jessie Buckley:lovely, yes. This is not the same. No. But the Australian version of Shiraz, it actually evolved in style. And actually, if you're comparing like a French one from the Rhone Valley, a Syrah, to an Australian one from Barossa, you can really see what old world and new world means in the glass.

34:41Kate Hudson:If I see a Shiraz, am I to assume that's Australian?

34:44Jessie Buckley:Most of the time, but actually you will now see that elsewhere. But what it generally means is that if it's a Shiraz, it's a bit more jammy, it's a bit more fruity, it's a bit more peppery, it's a bit more like damson-y.

34:56Kate Hudson:And that's Old World. That's New World. Oh, New World, sorry.

34:59Jessie Buckley:Yes. Old World is basically Europe where they've been making wine for centuries. And the New World is the Americas, South Africa. And there is a different style. Old World, so it's European, more associated with traditional winemaking, not quite as vibrant, not quite as fruity. Would you say it's heavier? It could be more earthy, a little bit more complex sometimes. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. all the techniques. Whereas new world wine, it's all like, here I am. It's exciting. It's all about sunshine. It's not always as complex. I mean, that's really generalizing. But if you like it bold and fruity and in your face and unapologetic, new world.

35:34Jessie Buckley:If you'd like to, you know, maybe think about it a little bit more over dinner, maybe old world.

35:39Kate Hudson:So is this interactive segment, are we going to try and find out now, are we a new world person or are we an old world person?

35:48Jessie Buckley:Exactly, yes. So I've I tried to find quite an old world style of Syrah. So that's the grape. This is one from the Rhone Valley. It's called Crow's Hermitage. Because wine's annoying, there's so much to learn about it. You kind of need to learn that Crow's Hermitage means it's 100 % Syrah from the Northern Rhone Valley. It's just one of those things you kind of have to get to know. This one is from Waitrose. Okay. It's quite pricey. It's about$17.50. But this is like your posh dinner party wine.

36:12Kate Hudson:Yeah. There we go. Yeah, treating yourself.

36:14Alan Carr:Yes, exactly. But have you got Old World and New World chocolate? What, today? Are you going to have like a bounty that's got the cardboard in it? Hey, kids, do you remember that? You're going to have a Marathon and a Snickers. Yeah, Marathon is Old World. And Snickers is New World. Yeah. Bee Jam supermarket, Old World. What did Bee Jam? What did it become? Oh, my God, now I feel old.

36:40Judi Dench:I remember it. You know, Iceland, Iceland, it's a new name for Bee Jam. Yeah, that's not Old World, it's prehistoric.

36:47Kate Hudson:So if you're going along at home, we are starting with the Syrah.

36:51Jessie Buckley:We are, yes. So if you take that, give it a good swirl. This one here, yeah. Yes, that's the one. And just sort of note how it smells. Does it jump out the glass or is it a little bit more reserved?

37:02Judi Dench:It's reserved. It is quite reserved, isn't it? It's not like, you know, banging me in the face.

37:07Alan Carr:Look at me. It's not like that.

37:09Judi Dench:I love that song. Yeah, Geri-Hell-Awell, yeah.

37:12Alan Carr:It's good. On which wine she'd be?

37:13Judi Dench:Back in the room, back in the room.

37:15Jessie Buckley:But now compare that smell to the other one, to the Shiraz.

37:18Judi Dench:Okay.

37:18Jessie Buckley:Just because, and I think you'll see that that one really is jumping out the glass, right?

37:23Alan Carr:Oh, yeah. Oh, my God. Yeah, yeah. Yes. Boom. Right. That's Geri Halliwell when she was in the Spice Girls. That's when she went single. Look at me. Yeah, it's raining, man. Yes, that's it. Yeah. Latino. What's that one?

37:36Judi Dench:The Spanish one? La Chico Latina. La Chico Latina. To be fair, if Geri was a wine, she'd be a white, because she only wears white. Yeah, she would be a... There's no way she'll be drinking red wearing white all the time. No, what would she be? She would be a Chablis or a...

37:54Jessie Buckley:She'd be like a Chablis, but she would be a bit like a Gruneweltliner, because there's a little sort of gingery, fiery kick on the finish. Oh, my God. But it's still very lean, it's still a white wine. What would Mel B be?

38:05Alan Carr:She'd be a tequila shot tequila.

38:08Jessie Buckley:That famous wine, tequila.

38:12Alan Carr:Emma Bunton, Leapframilch?

38:14Kate Hudson:No, she'd be like a Prosecco, I think. Or a Vina Verde.

38:18Alan Carr:Fun, bubbly, posh spice. Well, I think at her son's wedding, she would be more...

38:28Alan Carr:She would be...

38:31Jessie Buckley:Where's this, Geron? Who would she be? Who would she be? Let's get out of our system.

38:36Alan Carr:Who would posh spice be? before the wedding she would be she'd be naked wines

38:44Kate Hudson:sorry carry on other wine merchants are available they are

38:47Jessie Buckley:I think she'd be this I think she'd be a posh stirrer from the Rome Valley

38:51Kate Hudson:oh yeah she is she's posh she's posh but do you think

38:53Judi Dench:she'd be newer so you think she'd be

38:55Jessie Buckley:she's definitely old world yeah oh yeah I think so I think so

38:58Judi Dench:that's lovely I know you're not going to just drink it yeah but it was so lovely well look

39:02Jessie Buckley:let's start with that big one then seeing as you've both got it in your hands oh no you've got different wines in right

39:06Kate Hudson:Right, what have you got there? Because people are trying along at home. We need to make this seamless so that interactivity comes back now and then. I need my kind of bag. Sorry, Scorsese.

39:16Judi Dench:People are starting at home gagging for it.

39:20Jessie Buckley:They are.

39:21Judi Dench:And a wine.

39:23Jessie Buckley:Let's do the old world first, come on, because it's actually better to start with. I forgot which one the old world is.

39:29Alan Carr:That one. Thank you. Don't worry.

39:30Jessie Buckley:Luckily, you can see the difference from here. So, right, so give it a smell. So that's kind of dark fruit. It's a little bit spicy. Yeah, not giving much away.

39:38Alan Carr:It's like, yeah, mysterious stranger.

39:40Jessie Buckley:It's quite minerally, a bit of earth in there as well.

39:44Judi Dench:Shall we have a taste of the old world?

39:46Alan Carr:Let's taste it. Ooh. And you sort of think, when you hear old world, you expect musty, don't you, and stuff, but it's not, is it?

39:54Jessie Buckley:No, not necessarily, but when you compare it to a new old wine, it can feel much more reserved, much more traditional, much more...

40:01Alan Carr:Yeah, it's not, it doesn't feel old. It feels secure and confident.

40:07Jessie Buckley:Like it's wearing a tie and a suit.

40:09Kate Hudson:I like that. That's nice. Yeah, lovely. Easy to drink.

40:12Jessie Buckley:Good with a stew. It doesn't blow your mind, does it?

40:15Kate Hudson:It doesn't go bang like... It's just, yeah, it's drinkable.

40:19Jessie Buckley:Yeah, exactly. Let's compare it to the second one, see what you think of that.

40:23Kate Hudson:And this is New World? This is New World.

40:24Jessie Buckley:The Shiraz from Barossa Valley, which is a classic. And can I just say, is this from Waitrose as well? Yes, it is. It's about£13 or something.

40:31Judi Dench:Now, the smell of that, again, I probably would prefer. The same as me.

40:39Jessie Buckley:It's bold. It's juicy.

40:41Judi Dench:I think I prefer that.

40:43Jessie Buckley:Yeah.

40:43Kate Hudson:Am I a new world kind of guy? I'm a new world. So at home, there's probably couples or housemates sat there going, I'm new world. I'm old world. We might split people up. You might.

40:55Jessie Buckley:If they disagree. Hopefully. My God.

40:58Alan Carr:Wow. Our job's done. If we can ruin people's marriage, I know, this hasn't been wasted.

41:09Oh, my Lord.

41:10Alan Carr:Dear Alan and Lee, we got divorced after your last one.

41:13Judi Dench:Thanks for listening.

41:17Kate Hudson:So, go on, I can see a plate of chocolate there, which I keep getting my eye on. I'm like... Yeah, well... And we got, you know, people went out and bought this chocolate. What have we got? Is that a dark and a milk?

41:26Jessie Buckley:Got a dark and a milk, yes. And the reason I wanted to show this, Well, I know that Easter's coming up as well, and, you know, who doesn't love eating chocolate all year round as well.

41:34Alan Carr:What would you pair with an Easter egg?

41:36Jessie Buckley:Oh, see, that's just the thing. Normally just another Easter egg box. I love that. In my house. But the problem is with sweet stuff, especially chocolate, it kills wine because that fat and the sugar really strips out the fruit.

41:52Alan Carr:Do you know what? I had a bottle of Malbec once and a family patent of those. and I didn't like it so much. I drank it every day. Go on. No, listen. Sorry. I had a bottle of Malbec and I had those family pack of chocolate buttons, the massive ones that look like manhole covers. Oh yeah, I love them.

42:14Jessie Buckley:It's sport the wine. Yeah, it's a shame. But why? Why? Because there's a lot of fat, there's a lot of creaminess, there's a lot of sugar and it kind of, I don't know the science of it, but it definitely strips out all the fruit and it leaves your wine just tasting like metallic and thin.

42:28Alan Carr:Yes, when you're having it, you're like, the wine, the enjoyment of the wine is gone. And the chocolate.

42:35Jessie Buckley:And the cheese. It makes the chocolate taste of sugar as well. You can't taste any chocolate. If you're desperate to have chocolate with wine.

42:41Kate Hudson:I love chocolate. Go dark.

42:43Jessie Buckley:And so I've chosen some dark chocolate here to try with both of these to see that actually, you know, and the more sweetness there is in wine, so it will probably go better with that one. Actually, you can pair a dark chocolate at least 70 % with quite a fruity red wine. But as soon as you get into milk chocolate, it does it. And you can do both if you like. You can have a little trial.

43:05Judi Dench:Yeah, so if you're at home, grab your milk. Are we going to do milk first? Milk chocolate first. Yeah, why not?

43:13Alan Carr:Am I describing this? It's like a chocolate. Looks like chocolate. Smells.

43:20Judi Dench:It is a chocolate. Exactly.

43:23Kate Hudson:So we're having this, we bite this first, milk chocolate, go on. Nice.

43:30Jessie Buckley:Nice. Get it all around your mouth.

43:33Kate Hudson:I do.

43:34Judi Dench:Let it melt in the mouth.

43:36Jessie Buckley:Yeah, exactly. And then take a little sip of the wine with it. Which one? I'll go on who's go? It doesn't really matter with this. I'd go.

43:48Alan Carr:Thank you.

43:51Jessie Buckley:It doesn't matter. Me, though. I'm going old school. How's the wine taste?

43:59Kate Hudson:You are right. It totally strips the wine of any... No, you're right. It's like you're just drinking, like, not water, but you're drinking something, but... Yeah. It totally strips the wine of any flavour and...

44:11Jessie Buckley:That's weird.

44:13Alan Carr:You know what? You're right. It's like... It's not...

44:18Judi Dench:It's weird. You wouldn't want to drink that. So I'd like to try some of this Old World

44:23Kate Hudson:that I just drank with the milk chocolate.

44:26Jessie Buckley:I'm going to pour you some more.

44:27Kate Hudson:But I'd like to now try it with the dark chocolate. Yes. Because will that technically taste slightly different?

44:32Jessie Buckley:Yes, because it's not as sweet. There's not as much fat. There's not as much sugar. And I would like a bit more of that Shiraz, please.

44:39Alan Carr:Even though we're not having it with chocolate, I just like it.

44:45Judi Dench:Yeah, thank you.

44:47Jessie Buckley:It's like a cosy blanket, isn't it? All right.

44:50Kate Hudson:So if you're at home, grab your dark chocolate.

44:52Jessie Buckley:Dark chocolate, yes. And, you know, take a good sort of swig of the wine as well because you've probably still got some of the milk chocolate in there. Chocolate first. Chocolate first, yes. Oh my God, that dark chocolate is delicious.

45:03Kate Hudson:I don't like dark chocolate. Is there a bit of sea salt in that?

45:06Jessie Buckley:There should be, actually. In the milk chocolate, I think there was some sea salt.

45:08Kate Hudson:Oh no, I can taste it in the dark. All right, so.

45:11Jessie Buckley:Oh yes, there is, yeah.

45:12Kate Hudson:Old world. Old world, dark chocolate. Let's see if this tastes any different.

45:21Kate Hudson:Yeah, you see, it does. I get there more of the flavour of the red wine, of that old world red wine with the dark than I did. The milk almost, like I said, neutralises it.

45:32Alan Carr:Isn't it weird? Do you know what? We were talking about the Spice Girls then, and I was just thinking, you know when the Spice Girls separate, and you're like, okay. But when they come together, like the chocolate and the wine, fire. Yes. Do you know what I mean? That's how it should be.

45:51Judi Dench:It's like the spice girls have come together in my mouth. When we do, yeah, when two become one. Lucky it wasn't one direction. La la la, la la la la. Yes, that's how I feel. Yeah. And I think you should stop right now.

46:09Kate Hudson:Thank you so much, Helena. You've got a new podcast coming out, have you not?

46:14Jessie Buckley:I do, yes, actually. In the springtime, it's the Helena Sips podcast and it starts with a drink, but it's all about the rituals that bring you joy. So I'm talking to well-known creatives about what brings them pleasure, basically. And can we come on? Oh, well, now you said it on camera, then yes, please. Oh my God, of course we'll come on. We love you. Yay, yes, please.

46:35Alan Carr:Even after this conversation, you still want us on.

It’s Oscar season on Bottoms Up!

Alan shares a showbiz story about the time he drunkenly gatecrashed a party thrown by Dame Judi Dench - with Kate Hudson in tow. Lee also gives his verdict on Jessie Buckley, the hot favourite for Best Actress in Hamnet.

The boys then take on the latest viral pub challenge: Splitting the ‘G’ on a pint of Guinness just in time for St Patrick’s Day.

Elsewhere in the episode, Alan finally puts the tabloid rumours about him being tight to bed, a chat about posh people and their pets, and Lee brings along a red wine so good it makes Alan cry.

Plus, this week’s wine dilemma asks: what’s the perfect bottle to celebrate the end of pregnancy?

Wine expert Helena Nicklin (@helenasips) also joins for an interactive drink-along to explain exactly why chocolate ruins wine.
