In short

New Year banter and wine talk, including Alan’s failed resolutions, Tom Gilbey’s return as wine expert, and wine dilemmas. They also review multiple English/UK wines (Digby toast sparkling, mead, English Chardonnay) and give non-alcoholic wine picks for Dry January/social nights.

Guests/backgrounds

Tom Gilbey returns as the wine expert extraordinaire (wine advice, temperature, varietals). Main hosts are Alan Carr and Lee Peart. No other guest is interviewed; “Amanda Holden” is discussed as a New Year castle guest.

Key claims

Alcohol-free wine can still feel celebratory if it has bubbles/texture; don’t rely on myths like a teaspoon in kava to keep it fizzy—use a champagne stopper. For restaurant wine lists, look for southern Italy alternatives to Malbec (e.g., Nero d’Avola/Primitivo) to save money.

Notable examples

Digby “Leander Pink” toast; Lindisfarne mead (“Thor’s Hammer” and “Lee Mead” jokes); “Mille Bole” alcohol-free sparkling, Oddbird liberated rosé, Wednesday’s Domain 0% red; Tom’s “clack-free” English Chardonnay; Pizza Express wine-list Malbec vs Nero d’Avola pricing.

1:34Alan Carr:How would you like to have a bit of fool's hammer? I love going to the dentist. Have you seen my teeth? I love it. And I was like, someone said disgusting. I said, it's Tom Gilby having an ice bath. You're the pervert. It's like the masked singer. Yes, exactly. Take it off. Take it off. Take it off. Oh my God, do you imagine if it's Ben Shepard under there?

2:04Alan Carr:Hello, welcome to Bottoms Up with Alan Carr and Lee Peart, brought to you by Lifeweights. Yes, this is our weekly wine podcast. And if you haven't watched any of the six episodes already or listened to them, go and catch up. We're going to be having a gossip, uncorking a few wines and of course, solving your wine dilemmas. Your grape gripes, we're going to call them. Giving you top tips about your tipples. Indeed. And that is easy. It is quite easy for you to say well done. Yes, because I haven't had any wine yet. Oh, well, let's start as we mean to go on. Also, Happy New Year. When do we stop saying it?

2:41That's the question I always ask. When do we stop saying it? December 31st of this year.

2:48Alan Carr:I'm a sucker. I love it. Happy New Year. Well, actually, we spent New Year with each other, didn't we? We did. We can't get enough of each other. And with other people. Yes, I know. For anyone wondering, it's not helping the rumours, Alan. No. Listen, I'm going to pour you a little glass of fizz, I thought, because we love a fizz to start off with, don't we? And it's celebrate. Do you feel like this year is going to be a celebratory year? Celebrate. Yeah, like every bloody year. So we're not doing dry jam then? We're not doing dry. Okay. We're doing slightly damp jam. Jam. Moist. Blackout jam.

3:27Moist Monday. Moist Monday, yeah. No, do you know what, though? I will say, and I'm feeling a little bit smug. Cheers, by the way. Bottoms up. Bottoms up. I haven't had a drink for about five days. And it suggests I've got a slight problem when I'm going round to people going, I haven't had a drink for five days. Expecting, like, a fanfare.

3:48Alan Carr:I thought something was different. You haven't got those red wine lips. Thank you. No, I'm not wearing my lipstick today. I didn't know your lips were pink. I know, and my teeth are white. They're normally grey. Thank you, that means the world. And your eyes aren't yellow. Do you know what? Let's get you to recognise me. Do you know what? My New Year's resolution, I'm going to be kinder to you. Right. I am. I'm going to be kinder to Lee. Thank you. Lee Peart? Peart. Yes, that's it. People can't get my surname right, because I did a bit of TV appearances. I went on this morning doing those competition hits.

4:25And I tell you what, they... Got to be in it to win it. You have indeed. I watch them. Yeah.

4:30Alan Carr:What's the catch? What's the catch? It's... I've never seen anything like it. You can win£2 million and a caravan and a holiday home in the Cayman Islands. I'm like, what? Just ringing up. What's the catch? Well, the catch is people enter and then they make money and that's the prize. But the prizes are amazing. Oh, yeah. No, I know. Although I always do love it when Andy Peters is swanning around the Maldives and then a week later you've got Jeff Brazier looking furious in Wigan. Because Andy gets all the good ones, doesn't he? Yeah, yeah. But I did four hits on this morning. We cross over now to Le Pert, Le Part, Le Peet, Le...

5:09And I was just like, please, just get my name right. Come on.

5:12Alan Carr:So where was you then? Where was you in the Maldives or Mauritius or something like that or Dubai? Warwick Castle. It was lovely. No, I've been to Warwick Castle. I loved it. But I tell you what... I'm an old gay though. I love a stately home. And also, they... In a tea shop. Yeah, they didn't tell me. So I get this email and I kind of filled in very last minute. And I get this email, risk assessment. What was Andy Peters doing? Was he busy? Andy Peters was probably in Seychelles or wherever. And I get this email, risk assessment. Lee is confident on the ice and we will make sure he is a safe distance from the horse.

5:52Oh, no one wants that. I was on the way to Warwick like, huh? So yeah, they threw me in the deep end. But yeah, no one gets my name right. So thank you, Lee Peer. You get it right. So what was it like ice skating on a horse? I managed it. Ballero on a horse. And you are quite short.

6:13Alan Carr:Was it like a little Shetland pony? Oh, well, that's his New Year's resolution. that lasted one minute. It wasn't just a broomstick with a horse's head.

6:28That resolution didn't last long. It didn't. It was right out the window. Listen, what do you think of this? This is a Digby. It's a fine English wine, apparently. And it comes with a Digby toast. What's a toast? Shall I read it? To past and present, to modesty and refinement, to foibles and follies, courage and curiosity, adventure and abandon science and satire bishops and brigands green and pleasant to England oh god who wrote that Nigel Farage that's apparently the dig me toast so this is a sparkling wine named after the renowned Leander Club so it's the Leander Pink apparently

7:09Alan Carr:it's really refreshing yeah because doing this podcast has made me like excited one of the things is about English sparkling Yes. I'm really into it. It's nice, isn't it? It's lovely. It's really refreshing. Yeah. It's just the right amount of bubbles and fizz. It feels like celebratory. Yeah. Now, last year was Year of the Snake. Did you know that? What are you laughing at? No, just the way you looked at me was snake. Last year was your year. Year of the Snake. Well, I don't want to mention it, but celebrity traitors. Oh, my God. I was. Carry on, carry on. Any resolutions in terms of putting the snakes behind you?

7:49Did you have any snaky behaviour last year? Well, you know I was on celebrity training. Because this year is the year of the horse. Giddy up. Says the man who was ice skating with a Shetland pony. That was my year last year, year of the horse.

8:05Alan Carr:So we spent New Year's Eve together and we went with a great bunch of people. Now, New Year's Eve, a lot of pressure. Well, shall I set the scene? So I get a call from Alan months before. Would you and Rory and the gang want to come and stay for New Year's in a castle? And I was in a castle. You were celebrity traitors. We said, Alan, let go of the castles. And we were like, yeah. So we didn't really know what was happening. And then, so who was on the guest list? Who went? Amanda Holden, my TV wife, who is so much fun. She is. delightful. I've met her a few times, but she is wonderful. I love her.

8:47Alan Carr:And she's one of those people, like, we're up there for three days in this castle, and she's one of those ones, I don't know if you've got a friend like, she can't sit down, Amanda, so we get the itinerary, and your heart does sink. And she's like, we're doing Highland games. We're playing the bagpipes. And you're like, really? You know, and you just want to sit there and read a book but it was so much fun she was so right we were welly-wangling tug-of-war tossing your caber toss he is such a good tosser thank you my new year's resolution god damn no how far did you throw that caber well no so that's not the thing it's not about with the caber toss it's about apparently not the the length it's about getting it straight or no this and let me tell you this so I was on a different team than you wasn't I because we were competing we won for anyone wondering and the cabotage you get it there massive log right the guy demonstrating so I'm there in the group of a few many people that I'd never met before and I said oh so do you have to get it straight well judging by you you don't get many things straight can you get this straight and I was like oh okay Everyone kind of went, ah-ha-ha.

10:06Then, come on, mate. I'm sure you're used to getting your hands around a big log. And I was like, sorry, why don't you just call me a gay boy and be done with it? Like, what's going on? You know, when you're like, ah-ha-ha. Good for being back in the playground for you, weren't it? I know. Well, it was when I got picked. Do you remember when we were picking teams? We were picking teams, two teams, Alan and Amanda. Amanda, captain, Alan, captain. Alan picks a few, picks me, right? Later on, I wasn't the first, and then I walk over. Amanda goes, you can't just pick all your friends, Alan. Lee, Lee, you go back.

10:41So I went back into the line. She goes, hmm, so I'll have... I went, hello? If I'm not allowed on Alan's team, I have to...

10:50Alan Carr:And can I just say, the other person left was a little girl. That poor little girl, weren't it? We were quite competitive, right? No, not the child. Oh, Lee, the child. The ghost got picked before me. It was amazing. I went to Kayleigh. Kayleigh. It was amazing. But this is, that's Amanda. She is the hostess with the mostess. And I am a bit lazy. I don't do any of that. And I'm like, Amanda, really? So much fun. And everyone said it was the best. Well, you were a little bit on edge, weren't you? Why? Bagpipes. What with the me? No, when the bagpipes just, because at any point during the day, that amazing bagpipe player would just start playing.

11:34Yes, it just turns up anyway. It was like an alarm.

11:36Alan Carr:Yeah, you're sitting there. I said, you need to warn me when you're coming in. Honestly. At one point, it made Alan jump so much. I was sat next to him. He went, enough. It just kept popping up. I know you're proud of the bagpipes, but enough. Yeah, it was lovely. It was the best time. And I drove all the way up there and I stopped off somewhere and I saw a place and I thought, I'm going to get a present for Lee. Oh, this is nice. What is it? One word for you. Mead. Mead? Lee Mead. Oh my God! Lee's Mead. Lee Mead. Lindisfarne Mead. Mead. Now this is... I don't really know what mead is. It's fermented grape, but with honey.

12:33Alan Carr:Oh. And the monks did it. The monks? The monks did it. Sorry, that went down. The monks did it. So this is on Lindisfarne, Holy Island, and they've been making it for years. How would you like to have a bit of Thor's Hammer? Ooh, Thor's Hammer. Yes. So this is them branching out. So when you get this, because this is a bit of a modern mead, if it's Thor's hammer, right? A spirit drink made... Oh, I don't like the look of that. 60 herbs and spices, blended to produce a distinctive character of richness and strength. Yeah, holy island. Pink is a unique lighter mead with a delicious hint of orange in the delicate colour of blushing a vent.

13:17Alan Carr:Have a little swig of that, love. Oh. Hmm. Cough mixture. This is... here we go. Is that nice? I don't mind that. That tastes... How's Four's hammer going down? It's going down very nicely. That's all right. It's like a... I don't want to be like... It's like a light Jägermeister. Yeah, it has got Jägerbom vibes. You know, like Pinot Noir is like a light Malbec. That's like a light Jäger. I mean, you do cocktails. Maybe we should try and do some mead cocktail. A Lee Mead cocktail. Lee Mead. We'll call it the Any Dream Will Do cocktail. Yeah. You don't get that, do you? No, I don't. I'm not a professional homosexual.

14:07Alan Carr:I mean, I need help out at the weekends.

14:13How's that? For the purpose of the listeners, he's just tasted some pink mead. You know, I always wondered what that thing was in the cup

14:21Alan Carr:when you go to the dentist. I love that. I know, just an ice and a slice. And I'm ready. When she says, do you want a rinse? I'm like, I want a rinse. Yeah. What's in it? I don't know, I just love it. I love going to the dentist. Do you? This is so boring. Have you seen my teeth? I love it. I haven't been for 25 years. How's the pink one going down? The pink one's nice. I think for me, I'm going to go for... Linda's Farm Mead Pink. And I think we should create some cocktails. Shall we try? Mead Killer. Mead Killer. It's all about mead. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Oh, no, I've mead meself. It's not you, it's mead.

15:07Alan Carr:It's not you. Anyway. Mead the world. Mead the world. Mead the world. Mead the world. Anyway I think I'll I'll have another stick to a dig mead Thank you Dig mead We could do a dig mead Dig mead Dig mead Let's Yeah

15:35Alan Carr:Whether you're toasting the new year or keeping it alcohol free Leifweights me and Lee have the perfect bottle for you Lee what's the dilemma love? Well I'm glad we're doing this one because we've had a few comments across the series about non-alcoholic options for people who don't drink or people who just sometimes fancy a little bit of a zhuzh but don't want alcohol. So this is from James in Liverpool. Thank you, James. And he's doing Dry January, but my mates are absolutely not. And they've decided... I love that. Lovely support. They've decided to host a small drinks night. What's a non-alcoholic drink I can bring that still makes me look fun and fabulous instead of just I'm on a juice cleanse.

16:20And I like this because I've done it before where sometimes you don't want to be the one drinking water, do you? You don't just, you want something that makes you feel like you're having an occasion or you're doing something, but you're not left out, if you know what I mean. Can I drop a truth bomb here? Yes, go on.

16:38Alan Carr:I've done that where I've got a busy day the next day or I'm on stage doing a tour and I don't want to drink. and you go in and say, just a water. It was like, oh no, water. Pissed people don't give a shit what you drink after they've had a couple of glasses. So go in with a non-alcoholic wine and just pretend it's wine. Oh my God, woo! No one cares. For me, sometimes I want to drink something a little bit more exciting than a water that feels a bit like, you know, like if everyone's got a champagne in a flute, if you've got a non-alcoholic sparkling in a flute, you still feel part of it, whereas you're not the black sheep who's just there, like, you know.

17:19Alan Carr:And I've actually had a non-alcoholic gin before, like I said, and I found myself, I don't know, I think a lot of it is psychology. And if you've got it there and you've got all the bubbles, you've got a slice of lemon. A little garnish on there. Yeah. Nice glass. I love a nice receptacle. Yes. So, first up, we have the Mille Bole. I hope I've said that right. Alcohol-free sparkling. Love the bottle. It's a lovely bottle. And I will say, sparkling non-alcoholic was the first, I think, to come in and be like, boom, boom, we've got a good one. We've got good, this is a good substitute. Oh! Means there's a lot of gas in there.

17:59Just because you're not drinking doesn't mean you don't deserve some grown-up bubbles. This was what I was saying earlier. So, Mille Bole is an alcohol-free sparkling that still has plenty of zip and zing. That's what you need. Oh, it says, try putting a rosemary sprig in the glass to add a subtle herby tone. This is definitely more interesting. And this is what I was saying than a Diet Coke. All right. So everyone's there drinking the sparkling. You go like that. You don't feel like the odd one out. This is nice. It's delicious. And what I will say is, for me with alcohol free, I want it to taste nice.

18:36And I want it to feel and act like an alcoholic drink, even though it's not. Yeah. It's masquerading, isn't it? Yeah, yeah. That's lovely. And that's nice. And you can sip it along with a toast. I like that. It's got loads of personality. It tastes, it's still got that depth through it. Because sometimes I've had sparkling non-alcoholic where I'm like, oh, it just sometimes feels like an upgrade of lemonade or something. But that actually does feel like a nice sparkling. This feels like a non-alcoholic Cremant.

19:06Alan Carr:You don't want that non-alcoholic wine that looks like it's fruit juice just been put in a soda stream and you've just added bubbles. That's got personality. Right, next up. Oh, this is Oddbird. This, the bottle looks classy. Let's see the bottle. Oh, it does look quite classy, doesn't it? And it tastes classy too, apparently. What a rosé! Oh, liberated from alcohol. It's apparently from Sweden. And it is, according to the winemaker, like you just said, liberated from alcohol. But perhaps, don't use that phrase, if you still want your friends at the end of January. I know, it is a bit wanky. Hi, guys.

19:45Would anyone like a liberated drink? Liberated from alcohol? Yeah, don't push it, love. Just don't push it. It has lots of red fruit flavour and it makes a great glass for the evening. I don't think I've ever had a non-alcoholic rose. If I smelt that right, can I just say, if I smelt that, smell that, would you know that that was non-alcoholic if you didn't know beforehand? No, it smells like alcohol. Because I'd go, right.

20:13Nice, smooth. Hasn't got as much personality as that. Yeah, I know what you mean, but that's, yeah. If you like a rosé and you're... This would be good for the summery months, I think. This is like a celebratory one, isn't it? Yeah, I'd have this for summer. That would definitely be for a party. But we've moved on. We've moved on to the early evening, late evening, and people are going on to the red. People are getting a little bit frisky. Car keys are going in a bowl. Exactly. Your bus pass is in there. Oh, wow. This is Wednesday's Domain Vignette, alcohol-free red wine. Now, okay, I'm going to be honest here.

Read the full transcript

20:55A bit like cheese with vegan cheese, I don't ever think they've cracked it, all right? And a lot of people say to me, the hardest thing to crack with alcohol-free is the wine. The sparkling I've had before, it's very lovely. But I don't even know if I've ever had alcohol-free wine. This is a red wine and it's named after that feeling of, oh my God, it's only Wednesday, but I really want a glass of red. That is you. That is you, if any. Liar, it's Tuesday. Wednesday's domain. Sunday morning. Thanks to some pretty high-tech winemaking, it delivers dark fruit flavor at 0 % alcohol. Because you've got to remember this as well.

21:34Some of these, they're alcohol-free, but some of them are like 0.5 % or whatever. You've always got to check because for some people... They're all zero. Yeah. Oh, they're all zero. All zero. Okay, because sometimes it's a little bit more. Thanks for some pretty high-tech winemakers. It delivers dark fruit flavor at 0 % alcohol. Great for a dry, jam get-together. Now, the reason I say that is because I once had a friend and I was off alcohol for a month and I was drinking that clean gin thing. technically you haven't been alcohol free because it is 0.5 % I'll give over anyway let's have a taste of this is that the anecdote?

22:12fuck off yeah yeah yeah that was the beautiful and if you're watching yeah yeah I meant what I said here we go

22:23this is if you want something and you're sat there and everyone's like drinking the red and they're swirling it around and if you feel like really left out This has, this will be a good substitute. Yeah. It's not, it's weird because my brain's going, that's like the red and whatever.

22:40Alan Carr:Texture-wise, it's like a rich Malbec. It's got the berries. Yeah, yeah. It's so hard, isn't it, to do a red without the alcohol. But you know what, it's giving me the texture, it's giving me berries, it's giving me the flavour. I think that's fine by fire, that for the summer, But I think for our dilemma, that for me, that gives me the feels. That feels like we're celebrating. I don't feel like I'm at the side of the room watching everyone having fun. I'm having fun. So I think I'm going to go for millibole, yeah, alcohol-free sparkling. I think this does the job. Yeah, I agree. I don't know what his mates are like, James in Liverpool, but if they start on a bit of fizz, I would start with that.

23:23If they're a bit of a red wine drinker towards the end, by all means go for a bit of Wednesday's Domain. If you're still drinking and it's got to summertime, then have that.

23:31Alan Carr:If it gets to December, I'd have that. Yeah, a dry year. Yeah, my God, you've had a whole dry year. You've smashed it. Well done. Well done. Cheers. Bottoms up. 26:00Alan Carr:Listen, I saw you in a bar full of water. Yes. Through a window. I was told to move on by your wife. Rude. No, so what's going on? Are you one of those? Does it really work? He did an ice bath, didn't he? I love it. I love it. Yes, I needed to say that. He was doing an ice bath. It was an ice bath. And he posted it on his Instagram. Oh, yes. And I was checking the right temperatures to serve white wine. Because if it's too cold, you can't taste it. Always working. Is that a thing? Wait, hold on. Is that a thing? Yeah, if the wine is too cold, you'll taste much less. Oh, my God. Because sometimes what I've done is, if I've got a bottle that's not chilled, I've stuck it in the freezer.

26:40Yeah. I tell him, is that a bad thing? I promise you it's a bad thing. Oh, my God. Take home already. Brilliant. This is why we've got you back, Tom. But the ice bath's too cold. Yes, okay. How long can you do? 50 breaths. and they're quite quick at this time of year. Yeah, I saw it. So it's five minutes.

26:58Alan Carr:Because I was listening to it on the train. I didn't have my AirPods on. It was on speaker. I was like, oh, oh, oh. And I was like, someone said, disgusting. I said, it's Tom Gilby having a nice bath. You're the pervert.

27:12Well, we're delighted that you are back. And I have to say, so many of my friends have said to me... I know what you're going to say.

27:17Alan Carr:The sipping thing. The sipping thing. Yeah. My friends are Hannibal Lecter. nice picante in a salad picante it's chianti picante's a spicy mug no one knows he's going like that so what have you got for us because I will say actually you were our first expert and I'm going to ask because I know that you've been listening or watching how do you think we're getting on as students it is so fun and there's tidbits in every episode I love it do you think we need to because last week obviously we had lovely Olivia, who we adore. But did we learn much? You had a lot of fun. We learned. Yeah, we had a lot of fun.

28:00So maybe we decided it's time to get you back and teach us a thing or two. Yes. Okay. What we doing. So last time I said we did the counting thing and I thought one of my real issues is going to a restaurant or a pub or wherever and choosing a wine on a wine list. So many people have asked about this. Yeah. And I know you love a Malbec. Yes. And what's your favourite red, Lee? It is a Malbec as well. I wanted to say something different. No, I love a Malbec. Do you know what? I do love a Chateauneuf-du-Pape if I'm feeling bougie, which I always am. So if you're a publican or a restaurateur, the most margin and money you'll make is on the Malbec for the Red and the Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand.

28:38Yes.

28:39Alan Carr:It's a weird beat. They're seeing us coming in and they're going, ka-ching! It's good. Here they come. Two mugs. But I think what I love about a Malbec, and probably you guys do too, is it's full-bodied, juicy and smooth. Do you know what? I feel like I'm getting value for money when you're like, you know, it's like when you have a pie. You don't like a crappy pie. You want a big pie. Yes. Okay, so you can get a big pie, sort of, from southern Italy. Like Puglia or Sicily. I'd love to go to Puglia. I'd love to go to Puglia. Well, instead of going to Puglia... I went there and pissed it down the whole time.

29:14Did I? I don't think I'd order a pie in Puglia. Okay, forget the pies. Come on, let's get... This man's busy. I wouldn't have a pie. Carry on. So I went to a couple of places and got their wine lists, and I thought we'd start with a nice little Pizza Express. Oh, I love this. Yeah? So here on this wine list, we've got a Malbec that Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor might go for. But because you're really on it, there's a less expensive wine from Sicily and from Puglia that would give you lots of juiciness and saves you about£5 or£10. every time you go for it.

29:50Alan Carr:But I would go straight for that. So the Malbec, right. So you've got Malbec here from Mendoza, Argentina, right? At£34.45. For the bottle. Yeah. And this is from Pizza Express. Yeah. Now, I would go for a Montepulciano because I do love a Montepulciano. That's also expensive. Yeah, but you're saving money. You're still good. But here's a Nero Davila Shiraz from Sicily. But are you saying that people wouldn't go for that because it's at the top of the list? They don't want to look cheap. They don't want to look cheap. but should you just trust and should you do that thing where you go well I would get Malbec but you know what the Shiraz from Sicily is just as nice let's go for that and it's saving you over a tenner and honestly it's really and that's quite a lot of money so do we need to stop worrying about you know the top one yeah but if the rule is and I think this works for me if there's a Malbec look to see if there's something from southern Italy before it and you'll save some money, you two can play a little game here.

30:51And this is on a wine list. But why from Southern Italy? Because it's got the juiciness and the richness that I love from a Malbec. Yeah. It's fruity and smooth. Okay. So if you're going from Malbec, you think Southern Italy. Yeah. So look on here, there's the Malbec. This is the pub that we're in here, the Hero. Oh, I love it here. And it is 40 quid. Mm-hmm. Okay. And there's a really lovely Nero Davila from Sicily at 32 quid. Can you imagine behind that door, we hear, what the fuck?

31:23Alan Carr:We hear a glass being dropped. Get him out! It just cuts the feed. And this food is actually cheaper at the pub over the road. No, no, no. Get your coat. No, no, no. We're in the same, we're off the same line. I know, I'm to joke, I love it here. We've eaten here, it's lovely. I'm not... So, no, you are right, though. It's about shitting on your own doorstep. So, I'm looking at this Malbec, yeah. I go, Malbec, nice, blah, blah, blah, 40 quid. 40 quid. But what I can see here is Siciline, Italy, Nero d 'Avola. See, I don't know what a Nero d 'Avola is. But you don't need to know. You just need to know, go to southern Italy and you can buy a Primitivo, a Nero d 'Avola, or whatever great variety they do, apart from Frapato, which is good but different.

32:14So generally, you're going to be safe. You'll get a juicy, smooth, fruity wine. And you're saving eight quid there. And it's quite a lot, particularly if you're a two-bottle night out. Yeah.

32:26Alan Carr:That's us during dry Jan. They're shots for us. Exactly. Have you brought any along then? No, but I have brought, you know, last time I was here. Whipping me up into a frenzy. Foreplay. Alan got the hump when you said, we talked about white wine, and he looked as if he didn't want to carry on. Yes. And I said, please, can I bring a white wine for you to try? Just my one chance to see if you like a white wine. Go on then. Twist his arm. Oh, it's in his little, what do you call it? A sock? Well, I call it a sock, yeah. So this is a white. What kind of white? It's, first of all, I'm... See, look, he did that classy.

33:11You were making, oh no. Well, yeah, but you see, you guys do comedy and I do opening bottles. And so one hopes that I can open a bottle.

33:18Alan Carr:Yeah, I mean, when I open a bottle of wine, it's like I'm fracking. You see, that's much better than being able to open a bottle of wine. I've got my goggles on. Hard hat. So. Because, you know, I've got a hack, and it has worked with me before. If, you know, if the cork breaks in half... Oh, yeah. Get a shoe. What do you do? Get a shoe? Pass me this. Actually, pass me a bottle. Do you want to put me in a bottle? Don't, don't, because I saw the way... Oh, no, don't. Get a shoe. Let's say this is the bottle, right? This is the end of the bottle. No, this is a nice wine. No, I won't do it with the bottle.

33:55Shall I put the cork back? No, no, no, no, no, no. And say this is the bottle. So this is the top where the cork is. You get the bottom of the bottle. You put it on your shoe. And you start whacking the wall with the shoe. And the cork comes out. And I've done that before and it's worked.

34:10Alan Carr:What restaurant have you done that in? No, I haven't done it at a restaurant. I mean at my own house. Oh, okay. I've seen where you live. That's fine. The walls are caved in. It's like a padded cell. Pebble dash. Sorry, carry on. So this little thing is, you just fold it up and pop it in the top of a bottle and look how this... But do you know what, Tom? And I will say, and I love a wine. Is that not just saying, wow, he will not waste any wine? Yeah. A little bit drops out. But are you more saying from a little elegance point of view? Where would you get that from? Amazon. Amazon. Right, okay, so white wine.

34:52Alan Carr:Never going to buy one. No, no, no, you don't. I'll give you one. He loves licking the labels. I know he does. It's his favourite hobby. So let's have a little taste and see what you think of this. What wine is this? Oh, are you hiding? You're not telling us. Yeah, I'm going to tell you after. See if you like it. Oh, it's like The Masked Singer. Yes, exactly. Take it off. Take it off! Take it off! Oh my God, do you imagine if it's Ben Shepard under there?

35:18Alan Carr:You've got a Ben Shepard energy about you, Tom. Have I really? Mm-hmm. That smells... He hates Ben Shepard. Do you get bananas? Oh, stop it now. I was caught unawares. Right, okay. Are we going to have to guess what this is? Let's have a swig. No, just decide if you like it. Ooh It's not my favourite Really? But I like it No They're Yeah It's oaky What the hell In fairness In fairness I did this for Alan Because you like white wine Yeah He likes a Malbec So he likes a full-bodied Rich White wine I think Do you like that? Can I explain What is going on in my mouth because I'm having it. This is going to take a while.

36:10Alan Carr:No. I'm having it and you go, oh, and then it's like, oh. Yes. What is that? It's like an... Yes! It's acidity, so it's got nice richness to it. It's like a firework and it goes... Yeah. You know what, Alan? When you taste it, and Lee, you can get a little tingle on the side of your jaw. You find a tiny little tingle. And that's acidity. Is it? I've always wondered that. Whenever you feel that in a white wine, and it means it comes from a sort of cool area to grow wine. Wine's actually quite easy. See, now I'm having it. It's like the first sip, I was like, that's nice, look at me. Look at me, when have I ever liked that?

36:49Okay, should we take it off? Yeah.

36:52Alan Carr:Take it off, take it off. No way. Do you know it? No, I ate Chardonnay. Well, I thought I did. Do you know where it's from? No, Danbury Ridge. Yeah, up to Chelmsford and hang a right. Wait, it's an English Chardonnay. Shut up. Shit! She's gone but not forgotten, clearly. It's an English Chardonnay. It's probably, maybe the best that we make. Really? So it's got acidity, which is that boom you get when you taste it. But it's also got richness because it's a Chardonnay. You got me. Yeah. You got me. Isn't that interesting? because with a red, I love full-bodied, but with a white, I like light. Fresh.

37:35Yes.

37:36Alan Carr:There's no clack or anything. You're going to be like... You know, it feels nice. He describes it as clack. Have you heard that before? It says on the back, actually, you won't find any clack in this. Oh, wonderful. This is clack-free. Tom, we've got some questions. I'm bringing sexy clack. We've got some questions. Viewers and listeners have sent in questions. And thank you to all of you who have sent in questions or dilemmas. Send them in at BottomsUpShow or BottomsUpAtListen.co.uk. We'd love to hear from you. We've loved hearing from Denise in Havering. Does putting a teaspoon in a bottle of kava really keep it fizzy?

38:16And I would say this not just for kava, but for any... Yeah, no, that is not a thing. Isn't it? It's a myth. It's a wise thing. Is it? But the best thing is a little champagne stopper, which, cheap as chips, you bought him one for Christmas with your face on.

38:32Alan Carr:But you know as well, another hack as well, drink the whole bottle and then you've got none left in there. And then that saves on the washing up for the spoon. There you go. All right, here we go. So it's called a champagne stopper. You can get them anywhere. And they are. And that will actually stop the fizz from... Because it's airtight. It's called champagne stopper and it stops the champagne. If you don't understand that, just stop watching.

39:03Tom, thank you so much. Honestly, like, if you're not thinking, you're drinking, you know? Or if you're not drinking, you're thinking. What if it's me or us? And I love it. Thank you. Thank you, Lee. This is nice. It's a grower. It's a grower. You've got him. And do you know what?

39:22Alan Carr:Talking to you is like popping my brain in an ice bath. Is that a good thing or a bad thing? I'll work it out. It hurts. It's got brain freeze. Alan, it hurts. Yeah, it hurts. My brain hurts and just know what's going on. Listen, will you join us in a bottoms up? Yeah. Thank you, Tom. Thank you very much. Bottoms up. Bottoms up. Well, we hope you've enjoyed this episode.
