In short
The episode of Bottoms Up with Alan Carr and Lee Peart mixes Christmas drinks talk with celebrity gossip and a few personal stories. It opens with a sponsor read for Tremphaya (every 4-week treatment for moderately to severely active Crohn’s disease/ulcerative colitis, via self-injection or IV infusion; risks include serious allergic reactions, infections, and liver problems).
Guests
none. “Guests” discussed include Strictly dancer Vito Coppola (calendar promotion; Lee jokes about flirting/arousal concerns) and Sharon Stone (Lee says she follows his reel; he checks if she unfollows). Key claims/examples: turkey contains tryptophan that may promote sleepiness; they test “light red” wines for Christmas—Notebook Lele Portuguese red, Inverted Flamingo Argentinian Malbec, and Loosus Doro (Portugal)—and pick Loosus Doro as best for flavor without sleepiness (“no clack”). They also interview Barbara Laithwaite, CBE, about English sparkling wine (chalky soil, climate change, Y-Fold vineyard planted 2003; 2017 and 2020 vintages).

33welcome to bottoms up with me alan carr and lee peer brought to you by life weights this is our brand new weekly podcast where we uncook a bottle or two solve your dilemmas and have a good old catch up while we're doing it yes guess what what's this this isn't a why it's new we've gone rogue well i've gone a bit rogue because i've bought you a snowball holidays holidays are coming holidays are coming just get on with it and guess what it's it's time now listen it's not any snowball i have made can i just say how much vitamin c will i get from that bit of lime no sorry please please i'm not very good at garnishes i can see look at that and i thought it's a little nod so now listen it's not so do you like a snowball i haven't really had a snowball have you not no okay so usually you do it with lemonade or whatnot this is a champagne snowball it's an elevation on your snowball shall we have a taste and when would you drink this well a lot of people have this on Christmas morning or like, you know, just as a starting, a welcome drink for Christmas.
45Obviously, Christmas is next week, so I thought we'll do this. Where's the green? Have I inhaled the green? It's fallen into the glass. Oh, what? You thought you'd inhaled blood. I really choked on a lime. What do you think? So it's Advocar, it's a bit of sherry in there. It's lime cordial and the champagne. Well, we've got a Cremant, a Cremant snowball. It's refreshing. Mm-hmm. It is refreshing. Christmas in a glass of wine, because my family literally love this. Is this big in Grimsby? Yeah, not the series, not the sitcom, my family. But they love it. Because I don't really love a snowball. But with the champagne elevation, you just go to your guests and you go, there you go.
28The texture's putting me off a little bit. It's giving phlegm. Oh, well, that's... And that green at the top. Is phlegm. No, what you can do Flem is optional if you're making it at home I like this, it's nice Well, cheers, it's a little cocktail to start Bottoms up Now listen, I've got a bone to pick Come on then, what? I was scrolling Instagram Oh, I know, come on I was scrolling Instagram the other day And you know, like, fees pop up And you can sometimes see what people have commented Yes, called Instagram Yes, indeed You're allowed to comment. Last time I looked, it is a free country. Indeed.
12And who did I see? Vito Coppola. Oh, woof. The strictly come dancing dancer. Yes. And he was promoting his calendar, was he not? Yes, it was a wholesome, family-friendly calendar. Yeah, and I just put, can't wait. Well, you put, ooh, yes, please. I thought someone's got a little bit horny, haven't they? There wasn't the aubergeen emoji, was there? Thankfully, no, that was flagged. Well, I mean, come on, he knows what he's doing. I know. Did you see that picture today? He's dressed as a car mechanic and he says, put the caption underneath. I was that close to putting, check out my dipstick. Oh, Jesus.
56No, Vito knows what you're doing because they ask me to do Strictly every year and I say no and I don't want to be paired with a man, not because I'm homophobic, but in case I get aroused. yeah no I'm the same with that because when I do gigs if I'm flirting with someone like on the front row sometimes I'll flirt with like you know straight men or whatever but if then I find out they're gay I'm like vehicle reversing like I'm literally because I don't know it feels really I would feel the same I wouldn't want my dancer and I would want Vito or Gawker but I want yes yeah yes can I tell you something I think this might make you jealous so I used to do warm-up for Strictly.
31Yes. And I used to fill in for lovely Stuart Holden and I was once waiting in the rehearsal and all of a sudden I just felt someone start massaging me. It was Vito. He started massaging me. No way. Just started massaging my shoulders. Obviously that was he good. So I didn't know who it was. I knew it wasn't like, you know. Shirley Ballas. Shirley Ballas, yeah. I was like, Shirley, is that you? And I went like this. I turned over my shoulder. Was he like angry and like... I went, I went, I went. Ah. I did that, I let out like... Because it was a good massage. Yeah, yeah. It was like a proper one and he was like, hello, hello.
10What, what, what? You know, he's like, I can't do the accent. No, but I mean, are you going to get his calendar? I might, I don't know. Maybe I can, maybe I'll see if, you know, if you're on the good list for Christmas, maybe I'll get it as a little Christmas present for you. Would you really? Yeah. Speaking of Instagram, have you seen who follows you and who comments on your posts? Of course I have. And you're jealous. I know. I know. Go tell everyone. I am followed by Sharon Stone. That's amazing. She followed, a reel of mine went viral a few months ago. And I just randomly, because... Tell them what it was.
47Oh, I can't remember which one it was. It might have been the sushi. Was it the plastic bag? No, no, it wasn't. That was the one that went viral a few years ago. That was when I was at, I accidentally went to a kid's holiday. Well, not a kid's holiday. I went on holiday and I went to I went to Peppa Pig World on my own You do love Tiger Club It's because you're so short You can just get in Where is the short thing come from? You have got short man energy I haven't You have What are you talking about? You just You know Do you know what? I'm just I'm petite I'm like Oh my god Right listen I did Yeah that was I went to a holiday I went on holiday I accidentally booked a family-friendly resort.
28It was a massive mistake. And I was walking around in speedos. I did look quite ridiculous because I was on my own because it was for a wedding. And I had a tote bag that said, only slags use plastic bags. And everyone's just looking at me like, who is this man? Did they think it was like performance art or something? Yeah, the holiday rats gone rogue. But then, yeah, it came up priority. Sharon Stone follows you. And do you know what? This is quite embarrassing. She might be watching little clips of Bottoms Up. Sharon, love you, love you. Sharon.
03Enjoy Bottoms Up. She blocks me. This is the embarrassing thing. I don't really want to admit this, but every few weeks I check to see if she's unfollowed, like if she'd made a terrible mistake. Yeah, oh. You check in on Sharon Stone every other week. I do. I go, Sharon, you still here? You still with me, Sharon? And then I tell you what I got once. What? I was looking at Instagram. Sarah Jessica Parker likes your reel. I'm like, and I just imagine these A-listers like swiping through and I pop up with my speedos. I'm like, that's lovely. That's weird, isn't it? You must have loads of celeb followers.
45I don't. I mean, the most famous one is Mariah Carey. Mariah Carey, that's a flex. That's good, isn't it? That's nice. That is a flex. And she doesn't follow many people. Because I remember getting followed by Britney Spears on Twitter. No. And then, yeah, and then I looked and it was like, she follows 875 ,000 people and I thought that's her team. Is she just pressing every follow? Yeah, yeah. Anyway.
08Oh, I had a bit of tragedy this week in the park. Go on. My dog killed a squirrel. Oh, no. Which one? Well, Rita. Which one that was just the one having some nuts? No, not the squirrel. You've got two dogs. They all look pretty similar, to be honest. Dave, they killed Dave the squirrel. When Christmas Drew having a Christmas argument. It is turning into that family argument at Christmas. It killed a squirrel. But you see, they're very divisive squirrels because a woman went, oh my God, your dog's killed a squirrel. And I'm like, I think they're vermin. Well, yeah, I mean... Are they vermin? I just think it shows how we value beauty.
53Because don't you think, squirrels are just rats with like a little feather boa. Like, really? You're saying they're gay rats? Yeah, squirrels are just homosexual rats. Yeah. It is funny, isn't it? Because take away that tail. Yeah, exactly. They're just a rat. You've hit the nail on the head there. I mean, I would never, I am an animal lover, as you know, but I would never purposely, but I don't know what to do. No, you haven't trained her. I am not. I don't want any drama in the park. Oh, don't you? Well, neither do I. And why don't I bring that up? What? Remember when Rita ran off her lead?
33Ran, greyhound, isn't she? Some sort of greyhound. I don't ever know the mate. Mate? Mattel. Fisher-Price. You haven't got a Fisher-Price doll. And she ran off, right? That's your story going. I tell you, this might be a personal story. No, I tell you where it's going. Oh. Rita runs off. Oh, Sharon Stone. Lol. Hey, Lee. Love it. I love your gay rat material. Rita runs off. Hey, I love my squirrel. No. Show us your squirrel. Show us your squirrel. I'm going to make sure she unfollows you. I say, right, you get... Show us your squirrel.
19I say, you get George. So he runs off and gets his own dog, George. How long is this anecdote? I said, I'll get Rita. She's running round, runs into the area, please keep your dog on a lead. So she's running off, right? They put that sign there for a laugh. Well, you said to me, well, technically she is on a lead. I'm just not holding it. That's true. So anyway, she ran off. See you in the small claims court, Park Police. It wasn't his fault. So I went, I'll get Rita. Finally get her. I walk back up. Oh, God. Will you control your dog? Threw me right under the bus. Everyone's scowling at me. Will you please?
58I know. She just loves that area because there's loads of squirrels. Shall we have a moment of silence for Dave the squirrel? Yeah. Bottoms up. Rest in pain. Rest in pain.

44every outfit starts with a choice what am I wearing underneath? something comfortable? and let's be honest something that keeps everything looking smooth that's where Vanity Fair Lingerie comes in their new smoothing wireless bra has four-way stretch fabric for all over smoothing soft lightly lined cups for a natural shape and no wire comfort that lasts all day all over smooth all day comfort Vanity Fair Lingerie find yours at Target today There's a festive tipple for every seasonal shenanigans and our friends at Leifweights has provided free wines to help you get through the Christmas period, you know?
21Because it can be quite stressful at Christmas, can't it? It can indeed. And this is our drinks dilemma. So this week, we've had a message from Sue in Bournemouth. She says, I love red wine and it's my go-to drink. However, at Christmas, they always seem to be full-bodied and heavy. and that can be a lot when filling up on Christmas cheer. What's a lighter alternative to make sure I don't fall straight to sleep after my turkey? I know, I often do that. I never sit through the Queen slash King speech because I'm always asleep. I know, yeah. So we want to find her a light red. And I'm like slumped in the chair with like red wine lips and the Heath Ledger in the dark night.
04Well, also you need this because apparently turkey has like this chemical in that does make you feel sleepy. I can't remember what it's called. What? Turkey? The meat turkey makes you sleepy. So we need to find you a nice light red that isn't going to make matters worse. So what if they give them the turkey, like Nital or something? Yeah. I call bullshit. Well, I'm glad you do because JP, our lovely producer, has just Googled it and turkey apparently contains tryptophan, which promotes good moods and good sleeps. Is it like serotonin then? Yeah, it promotes the serotonin levels and that, you know, and you sleep.
43Obviously, I never studied science. We've just Googled it. Yeah, okay. So why do people have so many rows on Christmas Day if turkey's so uplifting? Well, they have it beforehand. They have it beforehand. So you use it to calm you down. It's like a muscle relaxant. Yeah, yeah, yeah. If you're going to plan on rowing this Christmas, try and do it after your dinner. Yeah. It'll just be better. You'll feel good. Please eat responsibly. don't operate any machinery I've just had a turkey right okay so what have we got first we've got notebook Lele what do we think of this font oh okay see I think that looks quite hipstery it looks quite like cool it's a bit like yeah I've just picked this up from like it's nice it looks like someone's answered the phone call and hasn't found a notepad and gone shit I'll just write on this bottle must pick up kids from school it's a notebook it's their notebook oh my god it's notebook yes yes go figure that works now yes it's a portuguese red um and the label oh i've got info on the label thank you you know it's like they know what they're doing um the label is inspired by the scribbles in their pocket notebook it's got a 10 abv a notebook will have you dancing on the tables and not sleeping under them.
05It's brimming with juicy plum fruit and a subtle hint of spice. It smells delicious already. You're going to love this. Yeah, I love it. I love it. Again, it's so light. There's no clack. It's fruity. I'd love to find out the actual, like, we need to write a definition of clack because it's quite an onomatopoeic word, isn't it? If it makes clack, clack. That's clack, isn't it? Yeah, so it is, that's so light. That is so light and you won't feel like, yeah, slipped. No, that's nice. Right, next up. Okay, right. This is your Grindr username, Inverted Flamingo. No, this is the Inverted Flamingo Argentinian Malbec.
52Now, all right, I would usually think that a Malbec could be quite heavy. So I'm a little bit dubious on this, but let's have a look. We've got, well, it says, what's more festive than a flamingo? It says it flips the bird at beige. Also, I would say there's quite a few things more festive than a flamingo. Yeah, I don't know why they've done that. I've never thought of a flamingo and gone, oh, Christmas. But I would go, I would... Do you know what I mean? What are you having for Christmas, flamingo? It makes me very sleepy. It's like turkey. Right. The inverted flamingo on the label symbolises the winemaker's bold approach to making this wine, scrapping the rules and apparently daring to be different.
31sunlight and cooling breezes in Mendoza make inverted flamingos Malbec big on berries and plum flavour with scented vanilla notes. Now, just before we do this, remember the brief. We have to find her something light. That's got that chocolatey, isn't it? It's got like a kind of texture. Yeah. And I will say that is light. So some Malbecs are quite like full-bodied, but that is a light Malbec. You know, with Pinot Noir, I'm a bit like, what's the point? Yeah. You know, I like it. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You want to go full throttle. You're not a glass... You're not a... What is it? You don't do things by halves.
07No. Don't wishy-washy on a full... And that, that feels light, but it's still got a bit of oomph. I don't think that's going to send me to sleep in the middle of the afternoon. All right. Delicious. Again, both delicious. No clack. No clack. It is clack-free. What's this called? Luscious. This is called Lusus... Lusus... Lusus Doro, it's called. It's a red from Portugal. Now, apparently Portuguese reds are typically higher in alcohol percentage, but this wine delivers on full flavor with lower alcohol. If you love silky smooth, ripe black fruits, but a wine that's still juicy and fresh, this ticks all the boxes.
47So let's have a go on this one. Ooh. Ooh, it smells good. I think that's my favorite. Even though I don't, I like the font of the flamingo. Do you know what I'm going to say? That, it's so smooth, no clack. Yeah. You know when it says on the thing bursting with berries, that feels like it's bursting with berries. That feels fresh and uplifting. And I don't think I'd fall asleep on that. Yeah, it feels like a good substitute because you're still getting the flavour, but it's not necessarily that sleepiness. I mean, they're all very light. I actually have to say I do love them all. Yeah, well then.
22But I'm going to go with Loosus as well. I think so, definitely. So Sue, we're going for the Loosus Doro Red from Portugal. And if you are feeling sleepy, it's not Leifweights wine, it's that turkey. They're all delicious. Please do remember to drink responsibly. For more information, visit drinkaware.co.uk. And you can head to leifweights.co.uk forward slash bottoms up and have these delicious wines straight to your door. There's only one thing left to say to you, Sue. Bottoms up. Bottoms up.
55Now I'm the first to admit when I'm in the aisle perusing wine, I never buy British. Shocking, I know. What am I doing wrong? Why am I not buying British? Well, thank God we've got Mrs Laithwaite's here herself. Barbara to educate us. Hello, Barbara. I feel like there's royalty in the house. Barbara Laithwaite, CBE. When did you get that? A couple of years ago. How was it? Who did you have? Does everyone ask that? Princess Royal, which I was very pleased about because, you know, she's very chatty. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. And so was it services to wine? It was, yeah. When are we going to get one? Wow.
39We do so much for wine. You are doing great, yeah. We'll just wait a couple of years. Oh, let's hope so, yeah. And can I say congratulations on the advent calendar? We love that Advent calendar, that Leithwaite's one. But do you know a confession? I opened all the doors trying to find a rosé. It was like, can't pay, we'll take it away. I was like... Can I confess, I do the same thing. Oh, good, good. You've got a CBE, classy, love it. So I just want to know very quickly, because it's such a family business, how did you meet your lovely husband? How did you meet Mr Leithwaite? Well, I try and keep quiet about it.
18Oh, do you? He was going out with my sister. That's how I met him. Oh, dear. It's all gone a bit Jeremy Kyle. Dun, dun, dun. Was he? Yeah. Love that. Yeah, we went to the same university. So she, by that time, they were just friends, you know. But so she introduced him. And we were just friends for years, actually. It was after I left that we kind of met up properly. Amazing. So what is it about British wine? Why don't I put it in my basket? Why? Has it got like a rep problem? Is it that people not fancy it so much? I think there's a leftover story to it, which isn't probably a good story. And it's also quite expensive, so you have to be fairly convinced you're going to get value for money from it.
04Yeah, because I heard that the soil somewhere here in England is very similar to the soil in Champagne, and then they go, okay, it's going to turn out pretty much. Yeah, and when I was thinking of planting, I actually did plant in 2003 beforehand, the year before we sent soil samples from the field I was looking at off to Champagne to get it analysed because they will give an opinion on whether it's going to be suitable for sparkling wine and it came back with a big tick against it That's amazing But they thought it was from Champagne they didn't realise it was from England You just put the soil in like a jiffy bag Yeah, exactly Champagne But that was a key moment though because, you know, go back 30, 40 years, there were quite a few vineyards in the country and they're fairly amateurish and they were just growing what would survive, if you like.
55And then people realised that we had this advantage of the chalky soil and therefore we should be growing, if we grew the right varieties, we could make really good wine and very good sparkling wine. And is climate change something to do with it? It helps, it helps. Does it? Oh, yeah. And I've noticed it. Greta Thunberg, I'd switch off now. I think it's good
23The world's on fire so is this wine all the polar bears are going they're going cheers that'll be all outrageous so should you have a little taste of this delicious wine well let's try what have you got for us well I've got I've got two wines from Wifel my vineyard is called Wifel we actually only produce two wines every year because it's a small vineyard. How long have you had Y Fold for? We planted in 2003. Oh, so 22 years. Yeah. Oh, and you've got your name on the bottle. That is a flex. That is a flex. Yes. Amazing. So 2017, Brute. Gorgeous. 2017 was actually a good year. The great thing about single vineyard and vintages is it kind of tells a story.
14So, you know, it tells the story of the... Do you want me to pour yours? Yeah, it tells the story of the place. And the place is consistent. So you get that in every vintage. Certain things you'll pick up from the wine, you'll pick up in every vintage of Y-Fold. But then it changes every year, and that's to do with the weather. Yeah. And all sorts of things. Or if you've made a mistake, we try not to make mistakes. But, you know... Because the reason we did this podcast is, you know, it's just decoding the back of a wine. And so what year is good? You know, we were saying, what about COVID year?
51Yeah, someone said that. Because it was quite, we remember it being quite hot. Well, the next wine is 2020, which is COVID year. And it was brilliant. Well, for lots of... To COVID. And climate change. that's delicious really like nice and light there you are can I just say this is really shallow but I love the font yeah he does like a font I love the font how much work do you put into the font well it goes and is that your actual signature you want to be careful you don't get scammed I could trace that I'll have to change it won't I oh should I do it actually oh would you like to do it can I try this what do you call this gadget It's a budget.
41Slopener. Great. OK. Bottle opener. Try and remember that.
Read the full transcript
50OK. There you are. All right, so we pop it on here. And then we... It gets it nice. Oh! Oh, it sticks to it. Oh yeah, it sticks to it. Because it's got the grooves. Wow, that's good. That came out really quick. You're opening a bottle? Why not bomb disposal? So can I just say, and this, I mean, I'm just, I just love that this is a whole family thing. You're all into wine. Like, you know, family, like, I'm just trying to think, like, what my family are basically, the only thing we've got in common is we can pick up things with our toes. So, like, actually good for grapes. Yeah, very good for grapes, yeah.
29But I, Henry. You should have undone that with your toe. Might have been less dramatic. but Henry your son makes the wine is that right? Yes he's a brilliant winemaker and I'm so I'm just so lucky that I can use him and all he says to me he says mum just give me the best grapes you can and then he takes it from there but he also likes to let the wine just express himself and he does win he's well known he wins lots of trophies for his own wine and for his winemaking. But occasionally I just beat him to it. And in fact, Wifehold has just been voted in the top 50 wine producers in the world.
22Wow. Number 19. There are three English vineyards in the top 50, which is great. Yes. And we're there, so too. Well, Barbara has certainly taught us a thing or two about sparkling wine. And we're going to play a very quick game, a quick fire game called sip or skip. Basically, what's going to happen is very simple. We're going to present a topic. And if Barbara approves, she will say sip. If she disapproves, she's going to say skip. Firstly, orange wine, sip or skip? Skip. Skip. All right, celebrity wines. And while you're a bit of a celebrity yourself, Barbara, So sip or skip? I think the celebs, there's some celebs you go, you can see they drink the wine, and then there's some that don't, and they're doing for a money-making scheme.
14Do you agree? Yeah, on the whole, I would skip. We did a family wine tasting, a fun wine tasting of celebrity wines once. I think only one was drinkable out of 14. Oh, I'm going to ask you. We know that Snoop Doggy Dog has a red wine out. Have you ever tasted that? No. Okay, just asking. Screw cap, sip or skip? Oh, definitely sip. Yeah, sip. I mean, it's been a really good thing for wine in general. Wine in a can. Ah, picnics. Yes, lovely. Can on a train? Yeah. Journey juice? Or a tube, or a few stops on a tube. I know, I know. That's a dig at me. That is a dig at me. We want... he said oh should we take some journey juice with us on the tube it was three stops i mean i know the circle line is hell but you don't drink through the circle line what okay we've had wine in a can what about wine in a bag what wine in a bag what just have a bag a carrier bag no no no a class you know a bag in a box that's what oh a box of wine i'm drinking it straight out of a carrier i'm not a savage You'd sit that.
27He's like, glug. I'd have a bag for life so I could use it again. We spend some of the summer in France. We've got vineyards in France as well. And so people come and stay a lot. And we got so embarrassed about going to the bottle bank that we buy a lot of bagging boxes. Oh, do you? Oh, right. Okay. I love that. I'm obsessed with you, Barbara. People choosing wine because they like the font. I think this is aimed at you. He is aimed at me, of course. I do like Times New Roman. I do. He's a sucker for Times New Roman. Ariel. Ariel. Ariel, is it? I think it's Ariel, but anyway. Ariel. We talked about France.
13Ariel. Wine with glitter in it, apparently. Oh, no. Common, common. No, I wouldn't think it would be good to drink. No. You know, you want something nice and smooth. Yeah. And that glitter. I know, yeah. Get stuck in your teeth. Yeah, yes, on the barb wraps. Well, there is a final one. I'll just quickly do it. Bubblegum flavoured rosé, apparently. Ah. Would your wife I would ever do that? No. Because the wine is meant to represent where it comes from. So where does the bubblegum come into it? The pavement. Yeah. I'm getting pavement. I'm getting cycle lane. under the desk. Yeah. No, no. Sorry, Barbara.
