In short

Christmas Eve episode of Bottoms Up about mulled wine and festive wine pairings, Christmas pet peeves (especially people stopping on Oxford Street), and “posh” wine choices for meeting posh friends. It also covers wine-snobbery vs accessibility, sparkling wine options on a budget, and wine-glass shapes.

Guests (and backgrounds)

Libby Brody, theatre/film producer turned wine expert; runs an independent wine consultancy and writes/presents a “Wine Without the Snobbery” column. She’s produced shows including The Dream of the Dog (West End transfer supported by Alan Carr).

Key claims

Cremant is the closest, cheaper alternative to Champagne (Chardonnay-based); Lombrosco sparkling red works with cheese boards due to sweet-salty/bubble palate-cleansing; for “posh friends,” choose wines with strong stories (cave-aged, rare grape, or Kew Gardens tie-in).

Notable examples

Chasm (river-in-cave aged); Ascertico (clone of Santorini grape); Kew Gardens Menthia (rare Spanish menthea grape). Pairings mentioned: mulled wine with blue cheese; Madeira with mince pies; sparkling with breakfast mimosas.

Real offer, down to the penny. They're picking it up tomorrow.

0:38Libby Brodie:Nothing went wrong. So, what's the problem? That is the problem. Nothing in my life goes to smoothie. I'm waiting for the catch. Maybe there's no catch. That's exactly what a catch would want me to think. Wow, you need to relax. I need to knock on wood. Do we have wood? Is this table wood? I think it's laminate. Okay, yeah, that's good. That's close enough. Car selling without a catch. Sell your car today on... Carvana! Pickup fees may apply.

1:30Libby Brodie:That is true. The nose is the cathedral of the face. Robert, come and sit down, please. What wine have you brought us? Oh, my God, it's like I'm potholing. Starring in Dream of the Dog, it's Lee Pierce. I go on all fours.

1:47Alan Carr:Tally-ho to the pothos. Bottoms up. Bottoms up. Tarquin.

1:56Alan Carr:Hello and welcome to Bottoms Up with me, Alan Carr, and Lee Peart, brought to you by Lifeweights.

2:02Libby Brodie:We are back again on corking wine, demystifying the wonderful world of wine, having a gossip as we go along, and having a drink as well, responsibly, of course. Of course. Is there any other way to drink? Exactly. OMG, it's Christmas Eve. Oh, how are you feeling? We've got mulled wine. That's delicious. I love mulled wine. This is what I like to do. I like to just get my hands around the glass and just feel all Christmassy. Me and my friends do this thing where we go, first of the season, first mulled wine of the season. Oh. Made lovingly by Tim. By lovely Tim here. So we're back again at the Devonshire Arms in Marlebone, aren't we?

2:43Libby Brodie:I look, this pub, when I walked in, I went, ah, this is a bit of Alan. Yes. This is a pub, isn't it?

2:49Alan Carr:I do drink here. I do drink here. Yeah, and it's so close to Oxford Street. You know Oxford Street can be a little bit manic, especially Christmas. It's nice to get you shopping, pop back a road or two, and it's so lovely. It's got such a gorgeous vibe, isn't it?

3:03Libby Brodie:Yeah, it's so nice. And not only that, we've got some little accompaniments here. Can I just say... Go on.

3:09Alan Carr:Alan Carr isn't the only icon that's drank here. Why? Go on. The Beatles. Oh, because there's a photo of the Beatles somewhere I saw. They had their office around the corner at Manchester Square. They came in here and the Beatles actually drank in here and someone went to them, oh, Fab Four. And that's where the Fab Four comes from. It's really?

3:31Libby Brodie:Yes. Oh my gosh, that should be on like a little walking tour or something, shouldn't it? Stop off at the Devonshire Arms.

3:37Alan Carr:So there you go, me and the Beatles. Love them.

3:39Libby Brodie:You need a photo up here. Yes. Where could we put it? I'll find a place. I'll find a place. Listen, we've got some little tasting bits, which I'm told by lovely Harry, our producer, that these apparently go excellent with mulled wine. And you know what?

3:55Alan Carr:Controversial. I've sort of gone off mince pies and now I'm a shorn kind of guy. I've never liked mince pies, I have to say. Really? You said no to mince?

4:05Libby Brodie:Now I've heard everything. God, I remember. That's just sent me. But what's the opposite of euphoric recall? I've just remembered back in Birmingham about 15 years ago, someone going, you've got more mints than Sainsbury's. That is a funny line. Oh, wow.

4:23Alan Carr:I'm going for the blue cheese. Is this blue cheese? I once worked temping and I went for the office. Bowling. Bowling. Temping. Oh, temping. I wouldn't wear those nasty shoes. Sorry, I thought you said temping. I've got my mouth full of straw. Go on, you were temping what? What were we doing? Temping, as in work temping. And do you remember that agency Manpower? I came through the door and went, hi, I'm from Manpower. She went, I'll be the judge of that.

4:56Libby Brodie:I love her. Let's get her on as a guest. Homophobic bitch. So, Merry Christmas.

5:05Alan Carr:What is it about mulled wine? Because you see, mulled wine, that's like Malbec's slutty sister.

5:13Libby Brodie:Yeah, yeah. Bit fruity. Hey, come on. Getting a bit hot. Makes you a bit, I love mulled wine. There's something about sitting in like a ski lodge with a mulled wine and that blue cheese, oh my God, that is Christmas to me.

5:27Alan Carr:I think I used to have mince pies, but I'm a mince pie snob. I like the posh ones where you get a bit of orange rind in, you know, you get the cheaper ones, but Stroller now is like, I think it's overtaken mince pies, didn't you? It's classy. What about this orange finger? This is like an orange. I don't really like dark chocolate.

5:48Libby Brodie:Don't you? It gives me a day. What? Apparently really good. Really good with red wine as well. Oh, it's one of those orange... Oh, I haven't had these in years. Oh, I miss youth.

6:00Alan Carr:This is a great segment for the podcast, isn't it? Yeah, I mean, I think Christmas is a time to look back. And I think we should be proud of Bottoms Up, don't you?

6:13Libby Brodie:I'm very proud of it. We've had such a lovely response. and we've had so many emails and messages. Please do keep them coming in at BottomsUpShow and also BottomsUp at listen.co.uk.

6:23Alan Carr:And I actually like the name of it, you know, we've all Bottoms Up because we did have some names floating about. I mean, one of the ones that I didn't think we should have gone with was Two Gays, One Bottle. Yeah, I know.

6:36Libby Brodie:The producers sent us that suggestion, Two Gays, One Bottle. Yeah, we would have... I think expectant listeners would have been very disappointed Well, I want to talk about a Christmas show. We duetted together.

6:52Alan Carr:We did a duet of Baby It's Cold Outside. Now, we don't want any letters because we know that song is a little bit... What's the word? Inappropriate. Inappropriate.

7:03Libby Brodie:It hasn't aged well.

7:04Alan Carr:No, it hasn't aged well. Has it, you know, what if you put in this drink? He's not letting the woman go, but we gave it a festive twist.

7:12Libby Brodie:We did. And we did it because you were, so I put on this variety show, didn't I, for Christmas? Yes, it was brilliant. And it was a secret lineup. No one knew who was going to come in. I was so stressed. You were stressed. I know, and it was just because I wanted it to go well. Anyway, so we had a variety show, a festive one, and halfway through, not that you want to talk about it, but we did the green cloak. The cloak and the lantern came out. Well, I said dusted off. It hadn't gathered any dust. I'm basically a traitor-gram.

7:42Alan Carr:I do. I just turn up with it and people say, pop it on. I'm actually wearing it tonight for someone. We'll pop the cloak on. I think when I die, that's what people are just going to remember me for.

7:52Libby Brodie:They need to do like a traitor's comic-on, don't they? Where you're all there.

7:56Alan Carr:Yeah, yeah.

7:57Libby Brodie:But basically, my pianist went, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun, dun. And then in you all, the whole crowd went mad. They were so happy. And then you said, I really can't stay. And I was like, fine, off you go. oh, see you later. And then it all became, yeah, it was quite mad.

8:13Alan Carr:It was very good, very good. And you did Bing and Bowie as well, didn't you? I was half Bing, half Bowie. I sang Little Drummer Boy, didn't I? Pom, pom, pom, pom, pom, that one. Yeah, it was good.

8:24Libby Brodie:Yeah, it was amazing. Thank you so much for doing that. But not just that, Alan Carr, you're going back on tour. Yes, I am.

8:33Alan Carr:Well, I sort of blanked it out, really. It's very, no, I'm at that stage, I've got to write a new tour. I've written some bits already. I know, and they're brilliant. Yeah, but I've just got to keep going, really. And what's it called? Have I Said Too Much? Love it, love it, love it. Lee, I want to talk to you about Christmas. What is your pet peeves about Christmas? I'll start with me. It's when...

8:53Libby Brodie:I love that, I love that. I want to talk to you about it.

8:58Alan Carr:I don't really. I feel I'm contractually obliged to talk to you. It is in the contract. But I, going down Oxford Street, people just stopping for no reason.

9:08Libby Brodie:Oh, I hate, I don't hate that in Christmas. I hate that any day. I am a person who, I would campaign for fast walking lanes and slow walking lanes. On Oxford Street? On any street. On any street. So you've got cycle lane, bus lane.

9:23Alan Carr:Yeah. Walking lane. Yeah. Slow walking lane. Yeah, 100%. That'd be great. Brawling home. Would you find people if someone was maybe like me? I would. I'd work. Because you mince quite, would you be fast lane or small lane?

9:35Libby Brodie:Well, gays walk fast, don't they? Yeah. you know, we walk fast. And I always think it's because you're, you know, always getting away from someone. And the thing is, I do think that London does that to you. I remember checking myself once because I was walking through the tube and at the gates and someone was taking a very short amount of time. And I went, oh. And afterwards, I thought, I've got nowhere to go. Like, I'm not busy. Like, I was just turning into one of those London, horrible Londoners who just like, ah, we've all got to get everywhere. Do you remember when you get to the Tube and you're like, the next train's not for two minutes.

10:11Libby Brodie:And you're like, you just feel like, back home when I'm back in Grimsby.

10:15Alan Carr:There's not even a train there, is there?

10:18Libby Brodie:Well, listen, I've got a little present for you. I've got a little surprise. But I haven't got you anything. What? Well, we've got a few hours left till Christmas. So I decided, it's only, let me just bend down here and get this. Very light. I knew that. So, here you go. A little Christmas present. A little memento for you. I've got a lot Christmassy paper. I know, I know.

10:46Alan Carr:Acid! Acid! Nothing says Christmas like an 80s rave. Illegal rave.

10:55Libby Brodie:So, yeah. Can I open it? Yeah, open it. Open it. Something to mark the occasion.

11:03Alan Carr:is it vitaliger not he called vitaliger no no what's that dancer called veto

11:09Libby Brodie:no it's not it's not veto vitaliger that's a skin condition

11:21Libby Brodie:it's a memento it's one of your favorite quotes oh my god hold it up to the camera that is true the nose is the cathedral of the face alan car 2025 we are making that a thing and what is this though what what is it it's like an embroidered um where to go over a toilet seat you could use it as a toilet seat like you pop that on your bidet yes i never use that bidet great good to know thanks thanks for that vital information my blue cheese is coming back up

12:09Alan Carr:oh that's so kind i haven't got you any then look at the little embroidered nose

12:13Libby Brodie:no it's lovely isn't it oh that's so lovely thank you no worries at all where should i pop it He's like in the bin. No, no, no, no. There you go. That's a present from me. What is your favourite Christmas song? Do you know mine? Ariana Grande. Oh, well, you just did the same.

12:32Alan Carr:Oh, go on then. No, what's yours? Sometimes I don't even think you care about my favourite. How does it feel?

12:39Libby Brodie:Mine's Ariana and Kelly Clarkson, Santa Can't You Hear Me, a modern one, but it's going to be a classic.

12:44Alan Carr:Oh, no, as it goes, it like 60s. Santa, can't you hear me? Something like that. I'm not loving it. I'm a traditionalist. You know me. Little Donkey. I love that one. I do like a hymn. I like Away in a Manger. Can I explain why I like Little Donkey? Sorry, go on, go on. Because I'm an animal lover. And it's got a story to it. What's the story? Little Donkey's carrying Mary all along the dusty road. Oh. The bells are ringing. It's very atmospheric. It is. Maybe you could do that in my next Christmas show. I won't be coming again. Merry Christmas.

15:06Libby Brodie:we've got a message from Rob in Newcastle

15:10Alan Carr:how are you Rob?

15:13Libby Brodie:Rob is me that's Geordie, isn't it? yes how are you pet? he's travelled a lot I'm meeting my partner's posh friends he says for the first time over Christmas and they're all the type who swirl their wine sniff dramatically and talk about notes of gooseberry like they're trying to solve a murder but he asks what bottle can I take that won't expose me as someone who usually buys whatever's on offer at the petrol station, where you've come to the right place, Rob. How's he got into posh friends?

15:46Alan Carr:How's he got into...

15:48Libby Brodie:Yeah, well, it's his partner. His partner's got posh friends. Where do you stand on posh?

15:53Alan Carr:Have you got any posh friends? Because you're like from Grimsby. Do you have any posh friends? I do have posh friends, I think.

16:00Libby Brodie:Well, I'm really... As I'm from the metropolis that is Northampton. I'm friends with William Hanson the etiquette expert he's really posh oh my god honestly whenever I meet him he's the nicest guy but it's so stressful because if I'm a little bit late do I text him telling him I am like da da da where's the napkin go like anyway yeah he's probably the poshest friend I have William anyway it's not about William it's about Rob Rob needs help and we're going to start with the first one

16:28Alan Carr:so you sort of need you want a bottle of wine that's got a story haven't you so you can go oh this is from this You want, a bit like you, a wine with a past.

16:39Libby Brodie:Yes, I have got a past. Well, this is called Chasm. Chasm. Chasm, yeah. And it's all about having that interesting hook, apparently. That means you'll always be referred to as the one with the amazing wine taste. So that's the first one. First up, this is the first wine for sale in the UK to be aged in a river in a cave. A cave. Ah, so the posh friends will love that. They're like, Robert, come and sit down, please. What wine have you brought us? Oh my God, it's like I'm potholing. Oh my God.

17:16Alan Carr:Oh, is that why it's called chasm?

17:19Libby Brodie:I think so, yeah. Because it's like a cave. Yeah, so getting a bottle involves a climb, the equivalent of scaling the Empire State Building. When your posh makes a remark on the juicy, fresh red fruit flavours in chasm, you can confidently reply, yes, that's clearly the influence of the cave. It's from a cave. Pet.

17:44Libby Brodie:I like it. It's nice. Oh, it's nice. That's you. That's you, full-bodied. Full. No, no, no. As in you like full-bodied. Yeah, cave dweller. and also imagine him sat there going bartholomew bartholomew the equivalent of scaling the empire's state building to get this wine yeah there's no petrol station there is it no all right so delicious that is actually lovely so we'll move on next what's this when it's at home acid acid yeah uh close assertica assertica sorry Do you like some bit of ass? A bit of ass. He wouldn't say that to his posh man. No, he wouldn't. He wants some ass. I put the ass in a certico.

18:35Libby Brodie:Per. Yeah. We could do a variation in it. Sassy. Sasser to curl.

18:41Alan Carr:Yes. Oh, look at that. It's not even like wine coloured.

18:45Libby Brodie:Mm. Nice.

18:47Alan Carr:I will say. Sorry. Your face is saying a different story. Know that? you're not keen on Greek you don't like orange wine do you? no I do like that but

19:03Libby Brodie:it's not Greek it's Australian but it's a clone of a Greek grape now that is a fact it's nice what I will say is I'm edging towards this one just for a bit it's got a bit more of backstory and I think they would like that but then I do like him going well you know this is the first clone of the Santorini grape I can imagine Rob at the table and his partner's like, Rob, what's got into you? Yeah. You know? All right, let's move on. We've got our final one. And I do like the font for that as well. You know, I like a font. You love a font.

19:35Alan Carr:And I think that says posh.

19:36Libby Brodie:Yeah, okay. What's this one called? It is called the Kew Gardens Menthea. Okay, it's delicious red crafted from the rare Spanish menthea grape. What do you think of that?

19:50Alan Carr:Oh, that's like caramel.

19:55Libby Brodie:Oh, that's delicious. That would go nice with that Stalin we had in the first bit. So I like the Ascertico, but I think the backstory between one and three, so the chasm and the mentheia I'm edging towards. I do like the cave one, I have to say.

20:12Alan Carr:But if your friends are posh, they're going to know Kew Gardens and go, darling, I go there for picnics, darling, it's wonderful.

20:18Libby Brodie:Yeah, and then you can go 10 % of the profits, you know, They go, yeah, yeah. Fund and research and comment. And they'll go, oh, darling, that's amazing. Oh, wonderful. I love that. Oh, you've picked such a good partner. Robert, please do come back.

20:31Alan Carr:Yes, oh, wonderful, please. Let's go to Kew Gardens and turn it into a vape shop. Absolutely. Get your...

20:39Libby Brodie:I wasn't listening. Vape shop? I don't know. You know what pops people are like. Well, I'm going to go... Spoiling everything. What do you think, then? Oh, look as well. Royal Botanic Gardens. It's got the stamp of approval. They're going to lap that up like sick kittens. They really are, Rob. We have sorted it for you, Rob. It's got to be that one.

20:59Alan Carr:Yeah, and it's got Menthia as well. You can do that lispy thing. Menthia. Oh, what? When people go, I've just come back from Barcelona. Yeah, I'll give off. And you're like, for God's sake,

21:06Libby Brodie:we're all tired. Cave or Q Gardens? Q. Q Gardens. Yeah, it's got to be. Menthia it is, Rob. As always, please do remember to drink responsibly. For more information, visit drinkaware.co.uk.

22:14Alan Carr:Merry Christmas. Mezza crezza. Joining us today is a theatre and film producer turned wine expert. What a range from red carpets to red wine. She's seen it all. It's Libby Brody.

22:31Libby Brodie:Welcome, Libby. Now, you're a writer, you're a presenter. You've got your own independent wine consultancy, but I want to know what is a wine consultant? What a fab title. Yeah, I didn't even know it could be a job. It's very exciting. I get to basically tell people what they should drink and sometimes drink it with them. And then I have to go around the world drinking wine in nice locations. Oh, my God. I know, they don't tell you about that on careers day. No.

22:55Alan Carr:No. I want to come back as you in the next life. That's amazing. And tell us what you've produced, film and theatre. Well, actually, Alan, Alan, you play a part in this story. And it's really nice. Surprise. It's really nice. actually because Christmas Eve, Spirit of Christmas, all about giving and generosity and supporting. So when I was 25, which is obviously two years ago, I had my first show that I produced. And it was a small little 50-seater show. And it was a huge hit, five-star reviews. My first ever, Working Through the Night and everything. And it sold out. And I got contacted by ATG, who are the biggest theater owner of me, saying, we'd like to take it to the West End.

23:36and it was huge. My first ever show, it was going to be amazing. I had no money. We'd done all the money in this tiny little theatre and we wrote begging letters and you gave us a very generous donation to support the show going to the West End and from then on, I was head-handed into a production company. I had shows all over the world and so really, you are my Christmas godmother. Oh my God!

24:00Alan Carr:That's a lovely story. Oh, I genuinely didn't know that. No, no, no. What was the show? It was The Dream of the Dog. Dream of the Dog, yeah. Oh, and he does like a dog. I love a dog. You add me at dog. But I hear the little shop of horrors. Now I was Mr Mushkin. Mushnick. Mushnick. And I get eaten by that plant and I. Mushnick and son, sounds great.

24:26Libby Brodie:We could do it now. What about... I knew she was the greatest. Because she spoke like that, didn't she? All right, Elaine Pace. We're here to talk about wine, not show face or a producer.

24:39Alan Carr:Have a day. Do you say that? I'm not even here.

24:43Libby Brodie:Starring in Dream of the Dog, it's Lee Pierce. I go on all fours. Now, listen, you write a regular column as well. I do. And I like the name of this. I think a lot of our viewers and listeners will like this. It is called Wine Without the Snobbery. That's what this podcast is about. Accessibility. Exactly. and just enjoyment and I've been obviously watching and listening to you guys and oh excellent and it it's what wine is all about it's what it should be about sharing it with friends family around the table and not making it too you know poncy wanky what are you doing with us today well it's it's festive right and I love sparkling wine a sparkling wine it's like an anytime drink it's the only one you can actually have for breakfast without judgement yes you know you look sophisticated exactly we have mimosas at our house yes not that we lived again No, we don't.

25:34Libby Brodie:And do you know what my little trick with mimosa is? If you're feeling a little bit extra bougie, squeeze your own fresh oranges and use that and fine strain them. It just gives it that elevation. Fine strain them? Fine strain. So you don't have the bits in them, unless you like the bits. But rather than buying a little carton of orange juice...

25:53Alan Carr:Oh, is that like when you get orange juice, it's just with bits?

25:56Libby Brodie:Yeah. Pulp. Pulp. Bits, yeah. With bits or without bits. Oh, what do you have normally? It depends how I feel. Sometimes I like the bit, sometimes I like the smooth. Oh, okay. More great questions like that. Send them in to Bottoms Up Show. If you like bits, send them. We want to hear from you. We want to see pictures of your bits. Oh my gosh. Moving back to sophisticated wine chat. Talking of sophisticated, can I say, do you think we're ever going to reach the dizzy heights that you have? Because you're voted in the top 20 of the most 100 most influential people in drink 2025. Yeah, I'm like properly marinated.

26:36That was, it was quite amazing to be, and obviously, I mean, I'm not sure if that's actually true, but it's very nice to be broated up there. It was very, very lovely. I mean, the buyers are really... It's just such a limbo.

26:46Libby Brodie:Sorry, I'll pass it over the other way. Do you remember when I bought that limbo set for your garden? We never used it, did we? We did a little bit, but then it just is there getting like mould on it.

26:56Alan Carr:Yeah, and I also went underneath and my turkey neck dislodged it. I know. So my arch was good, but this, that turkey, just pushed it over, didn't it? Yeah, it was a shame. Because I thought my tits were going to knock it over.

27:08Libby Brodie:No, they didn't. It was your chin. Me chin. Anyway. So, the easy segue from limboing to sparkling wine. So, I, you know, champagne tastes, but sometimes more of a beer budget. So what I'm focusing on here is how to get more bang for your buck when you actually want something really beautiful quality. Right, this has been probably our most asked question. What can I get on like a decent budget where it's not going to break the bank, but it's still nice? What we've got here, what we're having right now is a Cremon. I think you like a Cremon? Love a Cremon.

27:42Alan Carr:I was a Cremon. And this particular wine is probably the closest you can get to Champagne without being Champagne. Really? Because it's a Cremon, so it's made in France. This one is a Cremon de Bourgogne, so from Burgundy, just down the road from Champagne. and it's made in the same grape as champagne, which is Chardonnay. So champagne is made by Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay, a combination of any of them or single varietal. And the Cremont from Burgundy has to be made with a Chardonnay. And so this is as close as you can get to champagne, but it's a third of the price.

28:13Libby Brodie:And around how much price we're talking around for this? A Cremont is going to be probably around like£15. Oh my God, that's great. If you can get like a non-vintage champagne, can be easily 30 or more. And actually, when I went to buy this one, this is my only little exciting moment, I called my mum. When I went to buy this one from the supermarket, underneath it said, in the press, and it had my quote and my name underneath it on the supermarket shelf. Oh my God, that's amazing. I know, I had a proud moment, I called my mum.

28:40Alan Carr:That's great. Now, what's that called, Graham Becker? Is it Graham Becker? It should be like, yeah, it was South African. Can you do a South African accent? I can say maximum capacity. That's really good, actually. Yeah, that's the only thing I can say. Maximum capacity. Maximum capacity. And also I can do taramasala in Geordi. That's great. And I'm good to go travel-wise. Duolingo, eat your heart out. I know. I've been around the world twice. Loved it. So this is Greenback. This is South African. oh that's that's like a party in my mouth that's got more fish so that's so yes it's traditional method again same so the grapes are chardonnay and pinot noir so the same champagne grapes traditional method again but i'm saying look look look to new world because like france obviously old world people know what to expect and they pay a bit more for it but if you're going new world you're going like south africa incredible quality wines like amazing well we went to south africa

29:42Libby Brodie:So that's how, you know, that's how this kind of bottomed up was born. So they do wonderful wines. And again, same champagne grapes, same method, but a lot more sunshine, a lot more vibrancy because of the heat there. That's right.

29:53Alan Carr:It does. It feels like sunshine in your mouth, Lee. Yeah, 100%. Yeah, yeah.

29:58Libby Brodie:It's a lot more bubbly, isn't it, as well?

30:00Alan Carr:And she could have this for Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve. Would you have it on Christmas Day with a bit of turkey?

30:06Libby Brodie:No. Can I do it with smoked salmon canopies? Ooh. Smoked salmon canopies. You're fab. Okay, delicious. and then what were we talking price wise for this um that uh i think anything about 10 to 15 wow oh and um yeah yeah you look dubious yeah it's the wild card red sparkling it's a sparkling red it's a wild card firstly i love to support underdog and i think you know people go oh lumbrusco lumbrusco you know a bit is that i think it's having a moment i think it's got time for a resurgence because chilled reds in the summer quite big yeah and hang on a minute i'm just like

30:44Alan Carr:i'm so strong i should have i think i need a real man to do it i was gonna pass it to him hold it hold it don't do a megan vocal okay for the purpose of perfect that was a lot i'm lucky to be alive because the last sparkling red i had was probably a schlur

31:07Libby Brodie:Really? I mean, this might be quite similar. Do you remember Schler? I'm around.

31:13Alan Carr:Schler. Schler. Schler.

31:15Libby Brodie:Schler.

31:16Alan Carr:Is that to go with the Schtalen? I loved her in a burlesque.

31:24Alan Carr:I like her early stuff.

31:30So this is Lombrosco from Italy. And it's sparkling red. It's a bit different. You know, people go, what is that? Now it's sweeter. but hear me out on this because people think port with their cheese board port in Stilton you've got the sweet salty combo that people have this it's got the sweetness it's lower in alcohol 7.5 % so you can have a bit more of it or drink responsibly or whatever you choose and it's got that sweetness with the saltiness and because of the bubbles it sort of palate cleanses creamy cheeses it cuts through so it's the end of it and it's coughable it's a party pleaser it's like this went down very well last Christmas at my house not your vibe and it's a talking point as well it's definitely a talking point because you wouldn't expect it.

32:07That's nice.

32:08Alan Carr:And I like it chilled and you'd never normally chill it, would you? Is it chilled? Yeah, yeah, it's chilled. You have to like chill a sparkling red and the sparkling should be, you know, it makes it better with the bubbles. This is fresh, this is fruity. This is tank method, not traditional method. It's got none of those complex, it's not a complex wine. It's a fun, flirty little wine. So the yeast has gone. It's a bit funny, you know, it's like, with the other two, I'm not dissing this one, but the other two, every different mouthful is a different kind of thing or fizz but that is just pure and simple not not not in a bad way it's like okay yeah this is this you're not going to get any surprises it is what is with those two especially that second one it was so yeah it kind of evolves doesn't it yeah and you feel like you're at a party yourself because it's like oh yeah but that's but that i i still like that yeah yeah so are you saying with the sweetness and a cheese board they

32:59Libby Brodie:complement each other perfectly. Yeah, because you generally have like a dessert wine or a sweet wine or like a Tokai or a port with your cheese board and it's because you've got the sweet and salty. You have that sweet and salty combo going up. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't, well, I've just never thought of it. I just have what's there. Give it a go, get some Stilton or some blue cheese, get some of this and try it out. But, and I will also say that glassware, people always ask about glassware when we're talking about sparkling wine because of all the different fashions. So you had the coupe. It was, it's not, but it was said to be based on Marie Antoinette.

33:25Is it true that one's Marie Antoinette's tit? it's not sadly but i will say that an english company have just made coops based on real women's

33:34Libby Brodie:boobs from england hey lads you could get a range it's like a whole folk wine

33:44Libby Brodie:people say the coops as well like they're not good for the sparkling they're not champagne used to be a slightly different drink but heavier a bit sweeter and so but now those bubbles just leave too fast because the wide surface area you could just drink quicker because it's still glamorous wonderful then they went to flutes keep the bubbles in for longer but those are our fashion now those aren't trendy anymore because you couldn't smell the wine you can get all the aromas

34:04Alan Carr:because it's true what they say like the the nose is the cathedral to the face it's the do you know what a very wise man said that the nose is the cathedral of the face makes your whole face a city i can't wait for that to just be his legacy completely forgotten as a fact

34:22um yeah flute and then that is less trendy and now you've got the tulips which it retains the bubbles but has that width and is this a tulip no this is a white wine glass because if in doubt most wine professionals will just drink their sparkling from a white wine glass because it gives you enough to sort of oh yeah the tulips are the little smaller ones aren't they they sort of like flute and then they they have to say why do it at the top and they do that yeah oh my god i'm gonna get those that's really helpful for broadcast isn't it how i'm gesturing with my

34:46Libby Brodie:We should do a receptacle taste test one episode, shouldn't we?

34:50Alan Carr:Yeah. For 30 minutes. I'm using a... Now I'm going to use a pint glass. I've got a question for you. Yeah. My Aunt Nora is the right old wino. I love her already. The problem is she thinks that Blue Nun is sophisticated. Well, my mum loves to leave frown milch and a black towel and all that. Can you give us any tips on how to drag her out of the 1970s and turn her into a cool 2025 wino? Much like yourselves. Wow. Thanks, loves. Big gay Darren. Kiss, kiss, kiss. So blue nun, I know you wanted that, but blue nun, it's too sweet for me. I have had blue nun and Liebfrau Milch. So what can she have?

35:40Alan Carr:She's sick of blue nuns. I feel like big gay Darren needs to stop being so judgy to his Auntie Nora. she's living her best life having her blue nun yeah

35:47Libby Brodie:you can't teach an old dog new tricks no sorry Nora I mean she likes a sweet wine she's probably very lovely she's very very sweet and with her blue nun let her have it and you know save you some money but if you want to say she likes a sweeter wine then maybe go for a Riesling from Alsace in France we call that sweeter rounded quality or maybe a dessert wine Tokay Sauternes if she likes that sort of sweeter style of stuff but I mean I'm all for just you know live and let live enjoy what you enjoy quite frankly

36:18Alan Carr:and she's an old wino so she's put the hours in yeah so I think she deserves to have what she wants and also can I just ask this one last question what's the best wine to pair with a mince pie yes that's a good question I would have I know you're the expert Libby but I would say a mulled wine is nice to a mince pie mulled wine is excellent choice Madeira Madeira love a Madeira because it's got like a sweeter style of Madeira because it's got those lovely sort of like baked dried fruit figgy notes in there that would go quite nicely with the mince pie. I think very Christmassy. Yeah. Madeira, that sounds great.

36:52Alan Carr:Right. Thank you, Libby. Oh, listen, do you know what? You've made us feel even more Christmassy. Oh, I'm glad. Even more than this green hat.

36:59Libby Brodie:And do you think there's a Bottoms Up the musical coming any time soon that you might be able to produce? Wow. Only if you're starring in it. Okay, sign me up.

37:08Alan Carr:Bottoms up, bottom top, bottom top, bottom top. Should we do a bottoms up with this gorgeous wine? Absolutely. Bottoms up.
