In short
An Italian-themed episode of Bottoms Up with Alan Carr and Lee Peart, featuring Strictly Come Dancing culture, Italian food and wine rituals, Vito Coppola’s background, and a “Strictly Come Drinking” tasting game of three southern Italian wines.
Guests (and backgrounds)
Vito Coppola, an Italian professional dancer and Strictly performer. He grew up on the Amalfi Coast area near Salerno/Sorrento, trained in dance from childhood, won the Italian Strictly version for one year, and later joined the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. He’s also an author of a book about his childhood, food, and dance.
Key claims
Vito says food is his “love language” and that Italian ingredients have stronger smell/taste than UK supermarket produce. He describes limoncello as a digestive “after meal” drink and explains Strictly-style cheers/rituals. He argues dancing requires discipline and resilience, and that Strictly is like a “family” and a “well-oiled machine.”
Notable examples
Nonna-made coffee and recipes; tomato/lemon smell differences; tiramisu as his first learned dessert; his Strictly entry during the pandemic due to needing money for abroad; wine-to-dance comparisons (waltz, Argentine tango, salsa/Amalfi holiday).

1:35Alan Carr:Da-da-da-da-da-da-da! I'm going to play a game of Strictly Come Drinking. You haven't thought this through, absolutely. Strictly's happening soon. When are you going to get into shape?
1:51You don't even know what it is! I know, but I like what I like.
1:58Welcome to Bottoms Up with me, Alan Carr and Lee Peart.
2:02Alan Carr:Yeah, we're a little bit like Strictly Come Dancing. We swap the sequins for Sauvignon, the fancy footwork for Falling Over, and the glitter ball for Buzzballs. Good for you. Now, Alan. I'm only here. Sorry. Now! Now, Alan, we start with a welcome drink. And we're doing an Italian special today in honour of a guest we have on. Very exciting. Chef's kiss. He is a chef, actually. Oh, is he a chef, a home cook? He loves his food. Incredible dancer. Amazing dancer. Strictly come dancing dancer. For me, he epitomised Italy. He's everything about Italy. He's chic, he looks great. fantastic food, wine, dancing, everything Vito Coppola is going to be coming and it's going to be amazing so we're going to start with a limoncello do you like a limoncello?
2:59Alan Carr:I, okay, can I just say this? No, hear me out Vito's left the building everywhere No, no, Vito needs some home truths Of course Okay, this is an intervention, Vito No, limoncello, lovely but you go to some European places and they give you grappa. Have you had grappa? It's like unleaded petrol. And it's a blues, grappa, grappa. And you have grappa and you have the most delicious meal and then you basically pour petrol over your fucking face. Okay. It's disgusting. But limoncello is like a friendly, I like that. Is grappa Italian? I thought grappa was Greek. Grappa is grappa. No, no, limoncello, I think...
3:51I'm boring it. I'm boring it for you. No, limoncello, I think, says to me, holiday, I'm on holiday. When I've got a little glass of limoncello, I know I'm not, I'm not in London. I feel like... I'm not at my castle, relatable. I'm not in one of my wings. I'm on holiday. Yeah, yeah. I'm relaxing.
4:14Alan Carr:I haven't got a butler. I'm on holiday. I'm having to serve myself I don't know what to do What are these utensils? I drink this like Not to be offensive But it's a bit like mouthwash for me I love this kind of No it like cleanses Hello everyone in Italy No it cleanses the palate It's lovely It's not Listerine is it? No I know it's not It's delicious Here we go Delisterine Doesn't work
4:43Alan Carr:Lovely stuff That does remind you where they go, glass of, not glass of, a shot of limoncello. Oh, I'll tell you what I love, a limoncello spritz. A bit like an Aperol spritz. Is there anything that you won't put into a spritz? I swear one day they'll be like, oh, have you had the toilet duck spritz? What's wrong with you? There's nothing, that's a thing. It's not. It is, you just haven't seen it. Now, we are going to be joined, like I said, by Vito. Leap spritz, anyone? Strictly come, I'm just going to carry on. Strictly come dancing legend. but I want to talk about reality TV yeah I want to talk what's your best moment that's the thing because you know I used to do warm up on Strictly I used to zhuzh up the crowd oh really good it was a really good one to do actually I've had a few friends in Strictly and I've gone along to support them and I just say it is magic when you're in the audience and also when you get the front row as well and you're there and you're like that and you see well, don't see Tess anymore, but you know what I mean?
5:48It's an event. You are, you feel like front row of a fashion show. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because you're sitting there and you're just watching her. And it's, there's something about dance that I find very erotic. Erotic? Erotic. Not neurotic, erotic. As anyone who's seen me do the conga will know, it can get very sexual very quickly.
6:09Alan Carr:Do you have any reality show moments that are like your um your one because i mean david's dead david's dead classic because you know during lockdown i actually played the part of angie bowie during a zoom um whoa whoa whoa you can't just back up a bit i was i was cast you're angie bowie i was angie bowie and i was cast in a zoom dramatic reading of david's dead so and i played angie bowie i'll get you the picture we'll I put it up on screen. I played Angie Bowie. I said, you can't say a word. I said, David said, and I go, why? I knew she'd scream. I knew she'd scream. Like, and yeah, she's like, no, he's not.
6:52Alan Carr:It's like, yeah. It was like, it was great. It was classic. We had over 10 viewers. I think it, and Double Figures is good for you. I know, thank you. It was, I peaked. But for me, I think Kim Woodward, the late, great, sadly departed Kim Woodburn. You're causing this. Well, I was there. I was there on the day that happened. No, not in the Big Brother house you weren't. Oh, no, sorry. This is Lou Swimming where she had a go at Linda Nolan. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But no, yeah, Kim Woodburn, iconic in terms of reality. Yeah. Nikki Graham. I met Nikki Graham once and I, well, I didn't realise it was her.
7:32Alan Carr:And then I went, oh my God, is that Nikki Graham? I felt like a... But Nikki... I could pass. Victoria Beckham and be like oh that's Victoria but Nicky Graham I was like Nicky I just loved her I honestly you feel close to them the thing about Nicky Graham is people think that was put on it wasn't I met her when I did Friday Night Project I said how are you Nicky I fell over in the disabled toilet and they made me eat sardines okay next time just say fine she had she was one of those people that just like made you laugh What about when George Galloway, shall I be the cat? Oh yes, that was good.
8:12There's so many moments.
8:14Alan Carr:Yeah, yeah, yeah. Would you do what? I know you've done, not to bring it up again, you know, people. Traitors. I wanted to come down with me. Yeah, no, come down with me. I'm trying to think. I like four and a bed. Oh, you love four and a bed. I love four and a bed. I'd even make my house a door being me. And the TV programme. Because I...
8:37No, I went to Cornwall and I was being a bit of a diva and I was like, oh God, I'm sure they're going to bother me for selfies. I just won a holiday. I turned up at the hotel. It was one that was on fucking floor in a bed. I went in and I was like, oh my God, can I have a photo please?
8:54Alan Carr:Let's talk Italy. I think I want to retire in Italy. That's my dream in life. I'd retire now. I know as in like I'd like to spend my last days in Italy oh yeah because I remember going do you know when like when we were me and my friend were 18 you know everyone goes to like Magaluf or Ibiza when they're that me and my friend went to Venice we were like we're better people yeah and we went to Venice we had the best time loved Venice love Rome like Italy for me it's the best Yes, everything. Florence. Yeah, I've never been to Florence. I'm just going to say, I think everyone goes to Florence. We go to Siena, something like that.
9:39Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.
9:40Alan Carr:Yeah. Fit men, fit women, fit wine and fit food. I was going to actually talk about the art and the history and stuff. All I'm saying, I was like, all I did was poke my tongue in. Poke it back in. Poke? Yeah, poke my tongue back in. Everyone's fit. Can we have more of this? Yeah, let's have another limoncello. How much are you meant to have? It's only really one. It says here, the bottle. But why? He's not here yet. Oh. All right, well, you poured three there, so I think it's only fair that you bring in our guest. He is the Strictly Come Dancing dancer and very exciting. He's written a book that he's about to tell us all about.
10:27Alan Carr:We both love him. It's the one, the only, Vito! Ciao, guys! Vito! So, I brought something Italian. Yes. Without alcohol. Oh. Get out, go back to Italy. It's called Crodino. Crodino, yes, I've heard of this. Is it a bit like an Aperol? It's a bit sweet. You're going to like it. Nice. Is this your go-to? Yeah, I like this one. You know, this is a good aperitivo. We used to drink this one, especially because I don't drink much. Do you ever put maybe vodka with it? No. Okay, you'll get used to this. You drink this one and you enjoy, you know. Yeah, hey, listen, I can have a non-alcoholic drink. And after, at the end, if you want, you can eat the slice of orange.
11:17Oh, you are naughty. But we have...
11:24Alan Carr:If you're feeling naughty, ooh. Push the bow out. We've got you a limoncello, though. Limoncello. Limoncello. Limoncello. Sorry. Limoncello. Limoncello. No, but listen, he's training for strictly. We can't ply him without alcohol. I know, because it starts in like a week or so, doesn't it? Yeah, no, but this is very healthy. It's made with lemon. Yeah, lemon. So it's good. Lemon is good, you know, to detox before strictly. Detox. I feel detox. Hit, hit before. No, hit. Alan's more retox than detox You don't do the shot with limoncello Yeah? No What do we do? You drink slowly You sip it You enjoy, yeah Well why do they give it to you in a shot glass if you don't have to share?
12:08Mind game Limoncello is called the digestive drink
12:11Alan Carr:Yes So you're used to digest When you finish to eat you have a little limoncello you sip like this Because I was going to say talking of meanings what does Vito mean? What does your name mean? Vito means life. Oh, life. I love life. Well, I'm loving life. Yeah.
12:33Alan Carr:We celebrate life, aren't we? I'm going to grab life by the hands.
12:41He doesn't let go of life. Yeah. Give me life. I want life, 24-7. Make sure every day to the full. That's what I was saying. Always live to the full, celebrate. Yes! Ah, because you finished already yours. Okay, chin with this. All right, stop shaming. And again down, like this.
12:59Alan Carr:Yeah, oh, so let's talk about this, because apparently you cheers and then you put it back down and what's this mean? And you rotate. Is it good look? Yeah, let's say like this. Yeah? Yeah, it's a good luck. Well, you did it. It's an habit. It's just a thing, yeah. Yeah, you know, it's usually for a good, you wish a good luck to everyone and you make sure you look everyone in the eyes. Yeah. And after... You know, in England, that means good sex. You know that? Really? Yeah. I can't be serious. I know. Get a life. Now, listen. Okay. Strictly is happening soon. When are you going to get into shape?
13:40Come on. Veto, you are learning yourself. Go. Veto's of the essence. Come on. Yeah, no. I will try to go to run a little bit more. No, you're looking mighty fine. Can I just say what you're looking at? Yeah. You know your calendar? April.
14:02My calendar this year?
14:03Alan Carr:Yeah. He's got your calendar. We gave it him as a gift. He's a fan. Oh, okay. You're looking April. Thank you. I can't wait for October.
14:17Alan Carr:before we get on to strictly actually i was gonna i was gonna ask so where are you because you're from italy whereabouts in italy amalfi coast is it yes salerno you know near the amalfi coast yes south you know near napoli oh god i've been toward that area sorrento positano is the amalfi coast what was it like growing up in italy talk us through like what were the days like It's beautiful. So I always wake up, you know, I have a little brother, Jonathan. Yeah. So I always remember, you know, wake up with this smell of the coffee because of course we make the coffee. And not with the coffee machines, you know, with the mocha, the one that you have to make manually.
14:51Oh yes.
14:52Alan Carr:Yeah, yeah, yeah. Is that the best way of doing it? Oh yeah, that's the best. Like my nonna does. I do. I brought mine here, so I do every day. And after, you know, you want to, if it's summer, of course you go to the beach. Because in the summer, we used to go with my family, you know, to the countryside in the farmhouse in the countryside. So you go to the beach with Nonna, all my cousins, you know, because we have many cousins. We are like, you know. Of course, yeah. Yeah, I have like 11, 12, 17. We have many cousins. And yeah. Because my grandfather is the 21st son, my great-grandfather, 21st son of 23.
15:28Brother and sister. Oh my God. All from the same mom. Wow. Yeah. Oh my God. So are you going to have 10 children yourself? Well, I would like to have like three or five.
15:40Alan Carr:Three or five, yeah. Imagine if you had four. I didn't want this. No, because I don't know. When I was a kid, I was like, one, you know, maybe you want to give a bit of company because I had the beautiful. And maybe, you know, three or five or we can go to seven. You know, it depends. I like odd numbers. Do you? Because I've got friends who if the television volume is on 13 or, you know, 17, They have to put it up one or down. They like even. What a great story.
16:15Alan Carr:No, but I like, why do you like odd? Is that just a thing you've always liked? Yeah, I always liked. If I do something once, I have to touch. If I do twice, I have to touch another time to make three. Really? So today, you see, we have three, three crudino, three limoncello. This is great for you. Yeah. So I'm getting the vibe. You know, you're being Italian. You make everything, the limoncello, the coffee. and I think that's why people love Italy because it feels organic, you make it all yourself and I spent a summer there with Amanda, we did a house up there and it's just like, you'd rock up outside a restaurant, you know, you'd say, oh, can we go out for a nice meal and you'd rock up outside and it's like plastic tables, and you get that kind of English, the best food ever because Nonna is in the back making this recipe that she has perfected over 40 years.

17:06And you just get into that, and it's honestly, it's the best food you'll ever have. It's so delicious. Because you grew up with nonna. You grew up watching how she makes pasta, how she makes the pizza dough, how they make the bread every day, always with that flour. And my nonna always, we have our zucchini, our courgette, our aubergine, our tomato. So you grew up with the natural, organic things. When I go sometimes to the supermarket, that's something that's really a bit difficult because I want to buy some tomatoes. And the tomatoes, you know, people probably look at me and say, this guy's a bit weird.
17:43But I start to smell because there is no smell of tomatoes. You smell them? Yeah, because in Italy, I mean, in my family, when I take a tomato, you can smell the tomato. When you take a lemon, you can smell the lemon. Or buy an aubergine. Do you smell the aubergine? No, I just smell the aubergine. I can say that, for example, But one thing that is different is the cucumber here is different from the Italian one. You said it's so well. No, here in the UK, I see the cucumber are a bit longer and thinner. Stop it, mate. Which in Italy are a bit shorter. You're not helping. Please help. And, yeah.
18:16But they are different. Well, what were the bigger over here? No, in Italy are a bit shorter and thicker, and here are a bit slimmer and longer. Oh. Sorry to hear that.
18:30But the taste is good.
18:33Alan Carr:Cheers Cheers He'll drink to that
18:40Alan Carr:Alan, I know you've been looking after yourself recently With your green juices and your personal training I know, but it's so hard I've had to swap me pasties for a PT And me greggs for some greens And apparently you're meant to have a glass of water Between each glass of wine Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa Don't you ever let me hear you say something so blasphemous again I've got a solution. Have you heard of Wild Nutrition? Here we go, another one of your collagen lectures. It's not a lecture, actually. I genuinely use their Collagen 500 Plus every day and it is super easy. I just stir it into my coffee every morning.
19:17You stir the collagen into the coffee? Mm-hmm.
19:20Alan Carr:Oh, your skin is looking good. You're looking very moisturised, I'll say that. That is the nicest thing you've ever said to me. But in all honesty, Wild Nutrition's Collagen 500 Plus, it supports healthy looking hair, skin, it's packed with vitamin C and E, full of biotin, and just like me, thousands of people are already adding it to their daily routine. So, I thought maybe it was time you gave it a go. Are you saying I need it? No, I'm saying like a fine wine, you are maturing beautifully. And I'm just trying to preserve the vintage. cheeky sod. If you want to give it a go, then great news. Wild Nutrition is offering Bottoms Up listeners 50 % off their first three months, plus a free consultation with one of their nutritional therapists.
20:08Alan Carr:All you have to do is visit wildnutrition.com forward slash Bottoms Up. T's and C's apply.
20:18Alan Carr:Talk to me about your dancing. So you're living in Italy, right? When did you start dancing? You You are such a good dancer. Thank you. And I've seen you live. I did warm up on the strip and I've seen it there. Like, and it's just, when did you start? Do you have a memory of when like you first wanted to dance or started to? So everyone in my family dance. Well, really? So I was going to say, what does your brother do? Is he a dancer as well? He's not an accountant, but we all... He dances around the numbers. spreadsheet week
20:56Alan Carr:spreadsheet
21:01Alan Carr:he excels thank you that's good he decided to become an accountant but he was a dancer yeah he was a dancer he won an italian championship and everything but he said you know at some point because we are really different you know I love dancing he loves dancing but it's like I want to be but my family my grandfather my father is a dance t-shirt right and my grandparents they dance you know three times a week they go to dance outside there is this like you know community center where they go to dance and my father said to me at some point actually also my mom he was like Vito you always dance around in the house you know or since I was like three why don't you go to that dance school you know and start to dance properly I said that yes after I was a bit you know naughty a bit hyperactive as always and I was not really listening to my dad so he said to me you if you want to be here you have to learn i don't want to listen so after one year i came back and i started to dance probably because dancing is about discipline and that's the thing it's not about la la la it's discipline isn't it and you really have to you know commit yeah for that the thing is as well you know i was thinking like i think i think latin cultures and latino they really express dancing i've been to one is there is i've been to brazil you go to certain areas at 4 30 they have no shame they get out and they dance it is the most beautiful most romantic thing on the cobbled streets and they dance and there is no even in spain we went to moklin and that the the whole community dances and i thought in england you would have people going yeah but in england we just don't embrace that we do we do strictly come dancing but you don't have that culture of getting out there nothing and it's amazing Dancing is amazing.
22:43But I think the Latina, the Italian, the Spanish, that... Do you know what I'm saying?
22:49Alan Carr:Yeah, yeah, yeah, totally. Actually, what is your favourite? Like, do you like, do you prefer the Latin or do you prefer the ballroom? I prefer the Latin. Yeah. Samba, I love samba. Is that your favourite dance? I love samba. It's my favourite dance of all time. So when did you realise you were good? When did you go from like, oh, I'm enjoying doing this as the thing that our family does to like, oh, I could make this a career? I don't know. I think because I started since I was, you know, little and they throw me directly in the competition. And I've always been, you know, very, very, you know, fiery in a way.
23:23So my father was just, yeah, you just go and dance, you know, and just be you, do you. So I think, you know, don't think I always kind of won competition. Every time you win, there are nine more times that you don't win the competition. Yeah, yeah. But the thing is, you know, you keep going, you don't stop. you'll be resilient and you keep pushing hard. Of course, it does cost a lot of sacrifice. You have to say no to many, you know, at the time when you are a kid, for you it's important to go to some of the friends' birthday parties but you cannot because you have to practice. You go, there are this school trip, you know, to see, you know, around the country or the region, you cannot go.
24:01Alan Carr:Did that ever upset you or were you always eyes on the prize? No, not really, because I was very, very committed and I did love dancing, you know. So for me, it was like everything. And also, you know, I was there with my dad, with all my, also because my cousin is also used to dance. My auntie is a dance teacher. My uncle is a dance teacher. So we are a family who love dancing and food. So, yeah. Well, listen, your book, so this has got, so you've got basically everything in here. It's all about your childhood. It's about your love of dance, everything, your journey towards Strictly and everything.
24:35So why did you write this then? So you've got this story you want to tell everyone? I think it started because I wanted to share, you know, not just my story, because I just wanted to share my three love of my life, you know. The first, of course, you know, it's like food, my family and dancing. Yeah. So basically, when I am alone, you know, away from home, when I'm abroad, since I was a kid and I was traveling, the only one thing that has always been with me has been food. So that's why I started to, I love to work with imagination. and I make lots of example analogies and my brain works in a very cross ways.
25:13And at some point I did start to identify the food as an impersonification, as a person. Imagine food is an entity, okay? So food became my best friend. So don't just think of food as something you eat and you put in your body. If you think of food as something a bit deeper, food is with me, has been with me when? In my lowest moment because I feel a bit deflated. what I do I kind of I'm the same
25:38Alan Carr:I'm an emotional eater then is that what you're saying yeah I want to celebrate I go for a meal you know and today you want to you want to eat more because you need more energy you know and I don't have of course with food as if you know in any relationship I had my up and sometimes a little bit down moment I did speak about this in the book but always it never left me alone that's what I felt that's why I always feel like the food is you know the love of my life Dance is my biggest passion. You know, that is the maximum expression. I, you know, Einstein used to say, dancers are the athletes of God.
26:17Oh, I like that. And so everything I did, it was always, you know, through dancing. But food is my love language. So I do express through dancing. So say I came round your house. Yeah, I cook for you. You let me in. Yeah. Or I climb through the window. By that, you can't because it's very hard. He picks a lot. But... Step over the mantra. If I cook for you, it means that I love you, you know, because... Vita, I know you're being friendly, but you can't say that to me. No, I...
26:51What would you like? You cook for me because you love me. You can't. What would you like to eat? Don't say that. What can I, what can I, what would I have around your house? You want some pasta? You like carbs? Yeah, I love carbs. Okay. Hello? And I can cook something, you want something, you know, simple.
27:09Alan Carr:No, I love couture pesto. Get your own date.
27:15Stop. I can make some, I can make some arambiato.
27:22Alan Carr:Yeah, Lee. Lee, I think you need the toilet. You need the toilet. You need a really long piss. You need a really long piss. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Vito doesn't like even numbers. You need me, babe.
27:38Now, in terms of dessert, what about tiramisu? Oh, tiramisu is the first thing I've learned to prepare in my life. Oh my God, I love that coffee taste. Yeah, from my auntie.
27:50Alan Carr:Do you like just, you know... I love that. This is the difference with Italians. The first dessert he learned to do was tiramisu. Mine was Angel Delight. It's like, what's wrong with us? My auntie Janice. Do you not know it? Angel Delight? Oh, it's a delicacy. I will try. You can make it. I can make it. Oh, yeah, yeah. I'm really good at making it. You basically pour it in and you just mix it. And then for a twist, you put chocolate buttons on the top. Yeah, yeah. Like mum, I used to make. I'm curious. You had yours made from Nana. We had ours made from Nana. Just like Nana made it. I will try after this.
28:32No, but that, I know we're joking, but that is the difference between Italians. We've lost that in a way, haven't we? I mean, you might get the, you know, grandma made this pie or something like that. We have more hearty meals. We're like... No, no, but they pass things down. They go, they look after the heritage. We don't do it. We sort of move on. Genuinely, that's what I think. I'm not...
28:56Alan Carr:True. You know, you pass on recipes and we don't... All right. My nonna is a bit protective with the recipes. She has got this book that she hides and she keeps changing place so I just wouldn't find it. But, you know, some of the recipes, you know, I've been taught. Some of them I had to learn because I was living, you know, away from family. And some of them I just tried to make, you know, make and make and make. Nobody taught me, but because I've eaten a lot of that food, of that dish, I know how it should be, the taste. Is there anything that when you've come over to Britain, you've gone, Oh, actually, I love this.
29:32Alan Carr:Is there anything that we've given you that's like... Fish and chicks, pasty, Greg's? What do you love? Do you like Greg's? Greg's. It's a delicatessen that does... Greg, is it? Greg! It's that shop. Yeah, the pasty. It's the thing. Maybe it's not my favourite, but I would go in emergency case. Emergency? Yeah. But I love the Sunday roast. Help, I need a steak bake. I love this emergency. I need a steak bake. You like a Sunday roast? Yeah, that's our thing actually. I love the Sunday roast, even though the first time they brought me the Sunday roast and I saw the Yorkshire pudding, I didn't know what it was there for and they didn't put the gravy, I don't know why.
30:21Now they put the gravy sometimes in, but they just put me aside. I thought it was a dessert. So what I did, I did eat the Sunday roast with the gravy apart. And after I asked for ice cream and I put ice cream in it, and I thought it was, you know, a kind of cups container for the ice cream. I don't know why. And after I understood that, it was not the case. But I love Sunderose. And I love scones. Scones. Oh, lovely.
30:45Alan Carr:Tell us, how do you become a Strictly Come Dancing professional? Do they come to you? Do you audition? Do they spot you? Is there a talent scout? So, I was in the Italian version of Strictly. You were Italian strictly? Yeah, I did only one year because... Did you do well? Yeah, I won. Oh, you won it. Okay, so yeah, you did do well, yeah. Because honestly, people sometimes think I joke and they don't believe me, but I didn't want to be on TV. No, I wanted to just, you know, maybe go and have an experience... Did you want to be an accountant? ...uproad. No, that's my problem. I'm not good in numbers.
31:25No, but I wanted to try and experience abroad because I've always been a competitor, always been in the competition environment, which is quite intense. I said, maybe, you know, it's time to go a bit abroad and, you know, and see what comes next. But after I arrived this pandemic, of course, and after I understood that to go abroad, even to have an experience of a few months, you needed some money. And I was like, I don't have it. So in that moment arrived the Italian version of Strictly. requests. And I said like, okay, you know, I can just do once for three months. And I said like, please, I really, you know, I don't want to be on TV.
32:05So I will do just once for three months and just to have a little bit of saving to, you know, to move and have an experience abroad. And after I did it, and after I got the call from the BBC, from Strictly.
32:16Alan Carr:But like, at that point, when you'd done it, did you go, oh, actually, I don't mind being on TV? Yes. No, the thing, I realized that I could be myself because I always thought, you know when you're on TV you know maybe. And now I've seen your calendar. Yeah. Yeah you like being seen. April, May, June, July. No that thing evolved you know what I mean in a way but. I'm joking. But when I was there on TV I was just myself and I thought that okay you know it's good actually I'm enjoying it. And after by the time I ended it it was just you know it was just very very much enjoyable. So then they spotted you from the Italian version and then they said, can you come over?
32:58Yeah, yeah. And when I came here, I didn't know what to expect, to be honest. Because I didn't know, you know, what the British culture would be.
33:07Alan Carr:But it is quite a mental show to be on here. It's intense. I mean, tabloids, gossip, everything. People love to talk about that show. Yeah, I didn't have, you know, I didn't really have the idea. Of course, you know strictly, you know, because you are a dancer and because it's the show everyone knows. in the world is worse. But you don't know really what does it mean, you know, from the inside. So I didn't know what to expect. And I didn't know how, you know, I said, like, can I be myself 100 %? Or I can be, because, you know, sometimes I can be a bit, a lot, you know, and people say, like, oh, you are so extra.
33:41I was like, I know, you know, but I can't, you know, just say hello. You know, I need to give a hug. I need to, you know, and I said, maybe they are going to say that I'm a bit too much. And again, my family said, you just go, be yourself. Didn't you think his family just seemed, they're so supportive and so lovely it's amazing isn't it you've got that because some people don't have that family you're such a family orientation and strictly feels like you know a big family as
34:05Alan Carr:well but you know there's been movement in the family this year and it's exciting because obviously tess and claudia have moved on but josh emma willis and johannes that's exciting i kind of wait honestly because i met josh um a couple of years ago because he came to dance the Christmas special Christmas yeah yeah with Karen and he's a massive fan of the show people don't realize that he looks he's a proper super fan I think was he dressed as a penguin penguin yeah yeah penguin and and after I saw I never I never met Emma so I'm gonna I'm gonna meet her oh she's lovely for the first time you can't help fall in love with Emma Emma Willis oh yeah I've got her eyes I'm looking forward to I think it's a really good line up I do I do Are you excited for it?
34:54Alan Carr:How much say, do you have any, come on, do you have any say in who you get partnered with? No. Can you at least go? No, no, no. We don't even know the line-up. You know, we find out on social media. When it comes out, yeah. When it comes out, everything. And the line-up's exciting. They ask me every year to dance. And I say, I don't want a man, I want a woman. Yeah. No, I worry about getting around. Around. Aroused. Around. Aroused. Not around. Aroused. Aroused. When you whisper into a microphone, you can still hear it. I love Will Best. He's great. He's lovely. Who else we got in the lineup? We've got Chris Appleton.
35:38Alan Carr:Yes, Danny Dyer. Yeah, we've got Chris Appleton, who's Kim Kardashian's hairdresser, is it? It's exciting. It's good. Very exciting. And I'm so happy for Jojo as well. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah, he's great, isn't he? I love him so, so much. Is there a dance they don't do that you'd like them to do? A dance? Yeah. I love all the dances. I love all the dances. And I love, you know, trying to experiment. Racha-cha slide. Down to the left. Down to the right. Crisscross. Crisscross. Now, I would do that. If I go on, I'd do crisscross. I'll make you do it. Oh, would you? I would. Would you do a same-sex coupling?
36:17Hmm. Yes. Dance is something that you really, really, it will put you under a kind of challenge with yourself, but it will take out a version of yourself that you never imagined. That's the beauty of it. Sometimes when you start, the celebrities, they don't have experience, they never danced Borom and Latin before. And by the end or by the end of each journey, it could be like week seven, eight or final, they are surprised of how good they are doing. you get those in those interviews at the end they go i have you know it's almost like a
36:52Alan Carr:reawakening isn't it they're like i have found how those interviews are so some of them those vts are they sometimes like because i i watch and i think you should be in the rehearsal room practicing i know and instead you're at a fish factory well no it's like hello today we're doing the salsa we're in a salsa factory in macclesfield i'm like i'd rather be in the dance hall not by the organization is um yeah it's like it's like an amazing machine honestly it's like you know everything just works perfectly and this is like a family so when you're there you do feel that's why i felt i did it is a well-oiled yeah i remember i called my family after my first year and i said you know for the first time i feel like i can settle somewhere it is not just home and you feel you belong somewhere where...
37:42When I came here to the UK, the very, very first day, I mean, it was the summer 2022. And it was a very, very hot day. And I remember that day, I said, like, you know, nobody knows me here. So I was on Oxford Street, very hot. And I said, you know what, I just want to work. It was so hot that I was working shirtless and nobody was saying anything. Take us back to that moment. Huh? No, because... So you took your shirt off when? Because of Oxford Street. Was it like April when you were in the gondola? No, it was August. August. It was August. And I remember people were just, you know, nice looking at you and me.
38:18And they were just smiling. Yeah, I'm not, oh, they were nice to you when you had your top off. Oh my God. No, no, no, because of that. When I take my top off, it gets arrested. No, it was the energy of the people here, you know. Everyone just looked at you and smiled. And I remember I said like, you know, people here are smiling.
38:33Alan Carr:We're going to move on actually and bring a little bit of your home to you because we're going to do an Italian wine special. but before, I have to ask, you said earlier your favourite dance was the samba. Yes. Flip it. What's your worst? What's the least favourite dance you would want to do? When it comes up, you're like... No, on Strictly, is it the Viennese waltz? Is it the tango? Is it the Argentine tango? Is it the quick step? What are you not into? I mean, I really love them all. If I should pick the one that I love the least, but don't mean you hate it. Is Viennese Waltz? Yeah, yeah. Just because he's...
39:14That one in it. And Craig always goes, you know, neck, neck, neck.
39:19Alan Carr:Just because... Anton always says, lift your arm up. What is a fleckle? What is a fleckle? It's a specific figure you usually walk in the middle of it. Every time I watch it, I'm like, lovely fleckle. I don't know what that means. Yeah, actually, it's very complex. I just say it as in like, I tried to pretend. If I'm watching with other people, I go, Yeah, because you look at a couple, it looks as if, you know, they're just, you know, standing, spinning around, but actually the footwork, you know, that crossing, you know, back and doing, you know, it's a bit more complicated, especially when you're in couple.
39:48You have to compensate. You create a centripet force.
39:51Alan Carr:So who, if you were going to dance with another pro dancer on Strictly, who would it be? Who's the one you're like, oh, you're... If I can choose another pro? Yeah. Diane. Diane, yeah. Diane, Diane. Yeah, yeah. You didn't say me. I said pro. I am a pro. Ah, Diane after Allah. Not in that terms. Right, listen, you said you missed home. We are going to bring some Italian wines to you. You're going to bring it home. So let's do it. Let's do it. Let's go. Ciao. 41:27This episode is brought to you by Hexclad. Right. Tell me about your new home. Tell me everything.
41:35Alan Carr:Well, as you know, I've moved out and I've realised something quite important. You're missing living with me, aren't you? Like a hole in the head, Alan. No, I've realised I have nothing. I have nothing. I've got no sofa, I've got no furniture, I've got no cookware. All right, Whitney Houston, what did you bring? Nothing, nothing! No, I brought...
42:01Alan Carr:I brought my emotional baggage. Oh, so you've filled the entire place already then? No, hex clad have saved the day. These are basically the first proper things that I've got for my new place and I'm thrilled. I'll cut you living alone for one week and returning to Gordon Ramsay. You'll be swearing at me next. Honestly, they're brilliant. You've got basically the performance of stainless steel but the convenience of non-stick. So basically you get that like amazing sear but nothing's sticking to the pan, all right? So also, super easy to clean. When did I last clean a pan, Lee? Well, exactly. Maybe it's time to start getting that enormous kitchen of yours and get to it.
42:42Alan Carr:Oh, yeah. I have got a castle, haven't I? I forget. Also, their dishwasher safe, their metal utensil safe and oven safe. And not only that, they come with a lifetime warranty. So basically, these are the last pans you'll ever need. Exactly. It's going to be my longest relationship to date. So that doesn't go down the pan. No, good one, Alan. All right. If you have just moved like me or you think your kitchen needs a little upgrade, then why not try Hexclat? Yeah, don't use those horrible pans from 2004. You know, when you start learning the scratching and then all the black bits get in the food.
43:15I know, exactly.
43:16Alan Carr:So if you're hosting all summer long or you just want to make everyday cooking feel that little bit easier, then this is the upgrade you need. And breaking news for a limited time only, bottoms up listeners get 10 % off. All you have to do is visit hexclad.co.uk forward slash bottoms up. Now get in that kitchen and cook me something. I thought you had a butler. You're my butler now.
43:56Alan Carr:right as promised we are going to play a game of strictly come drinking all right so i just came up with that and um there are three what's it called again strictly come drinking I love it.
44:16Alan Carr:Nice.
44:21You haven't thought this through, have you, Lee?
44:30Alan Carr:Okay. So, we've all got wines from southern Italy. Italy. In honour of you, Vito. Thank you. So what we're going to do is we are going to taste three wines that I've got down here and you're going to score it on our paddles, all right? Nice. You're going to score it out of ten, okay? On these lovely paddles that our dear, dear executive producer, Kate, has spent minutes making. God bless that glue gun. So please correct me if I'm wrong. We're going to go for number one. But can you drink though? You're performing. You can have an inch in the bottom. A little bit of wine is fine. Of course. Or a bit of champagne or Prosecco sometimes to celebrate.
45:20Or a bit of limoncello to digest.
45:21Alan Carr:That's it. That's fine. You don't like spirits, do you? No, no spirits. No spirits for you. Good. All right, thank you. So, we're going to start with... Triade? Triade. Triade. Blanquette. Triade, you know, it means like, you know, la triade. It means when you have... The three. The three of you. The three of us. I love this. No.
45:43Get boring. You know, going back to the odd numbers and things. Three is a perfect number.
45:53You didn't even taste it. I know, but I like what I like.
46:01Oh, you're making a mockery. Oh, you're ruining the water. Also, can you wipe mine off? Right, so. I'm not wiping your 69. Tree. If you're listening, don't.
46:14Alan Carr:If you're listening, turn off. Triade Bianco. Okay. So this is pale gold and elegant. Okay. And bright with fresh citrus white flowers, pear, and a hint of herbs on the nose. You like? Yes. Nice. It's crisp. Refreshing taste. Lemon. Green apple. This one. Peach. I think if this dance was a waltz, it would be elegant, smooth and effortless. No, no. No, Alan, no. If this was a dance, it would be a waltz. Elegant, smooth and effortless. What did I say? You said...
46:58What was it?
46:59Alan Carr:You said, if this dance was a waltz. No. Oh, God. If this was a dance, it would be a waltz. A waltz. Oh, yeah. Yeah. That's what I mean. Not that we're reading it from the card. It's elegant, smooth and effortless. You were right, Alan. I was right. Doesn't need to shout. It wins you over with style and finesse. What do you think about that? So, we've got to rate the triadet. Let's rate. I like it. It's smooth. You like the smooth? Yeah, I love it smooth. Right, so... American smooth. Also is a good... But that's another dance. That's another dance. We said waltz. So I'm going to go... I'm going there.
47:46Alan Carr:Ready? All right, so... Will the judges please reveal their scores? Yes. Alan Carr, fabulous. Eight. Nice. Vito Coppola. Seven and a half. Is it Coppola? Coppola. Coppola. seven and a half leap it seven you see seven seven and a half and eight yay so yeah do we do comments now comments okay you want to know why I put seven and a half yeah why did he get the half why are you one less half less than Alan and half more than me because I think it's a seven as a vote it's an alpha for the back taste you know the one the taste that I feel now after taste Aftertaste. The one that leaves. You always have to wait a little bit.
48:35You probably know this better than me. Oh my God, yeah. And after you can give, you know. And also because of course seven is another number and half is even half of, you know, it's very, very odd.
48:43Alan Carr:Oh, so you're into that? Okay. You know what I mean? What? You want to split the odd number. Yes, by putting half. That's right. More odd than the odd. It's good. Right. So this is, we'll leave it here. So that's, yeah. Right, Carol Vorderman, shall we? Our producers will add up those numbers. Seven, seven and a half and eight. I can see him now.
49:08The panic in their faces tells me they knew that was going to happen.
49:13Alan Carr:You've ruined the show. All right. Oh, okay. What's this called? This is called a Terre di Faiano Primitivo Organic Puglia. Is that right? No, what's Terre di Faiano? Tere di Faiano. Primitivo. You smell amazing, by the way. Oh, me? No, you do. What are you wearing? Thank you. It's an Italian perfume. Is it? You're Italian all over, aren't you? Yeah, they make when I go to the Monfigo, so I have to bring you. Can I smell? Yeah. Where? Here. Oh, no. That's nice. Vita. Okay.
49:57Alan Carr:The chalk's going to run out by the time we finish this. It's just a nub. Sorry, Vito. It's good. A what?
50:07Alan Carr:Right. Do you like a white rosé or a red? What's your fave? I don't like drinking. He does. So it depends. If I have to drink a little bit of wine with the meat, with a piece of meat like a steak, you have a red. And it's called Terre di Faiano Primitivo Organibus. Terre di Faiano. Faiano. Faiano. What does that mean in Italian? Terre di Faiano. No, Terre di Faiano is the land, is the land. The land, yeah, the land where it's from. Land of Faiano. Primitive, caveman. Primitive. Organic is organical. All right, now you're patronizing me. You're just saying the words. Ah, I told you what I was...
50:50You just said the words in a different accent. I told you what I was... Organic, organic, bouillard, bouillard. Exactly. Yeah, all right. Fucking spell.
50:59Alan Carr:So it's rich and full-bodied with ripe black fruit, pepper, earthy notes and firm tannins. Have a taste of it. A long, powerful and warming... What would this dance be, though? I'm glad you asked. It would be the Argentine Tango. Because it's dramatic, intense, expressive and has a bit of swagger. It's a wine that walks into the room knowing that it's the main character. This is giving me August. Sheen here. August. You know when you're dressed as a gondola. No, gondolier. Gondolier. You're dressed as a massive, you're dressed as a boat.
51:42Alan Carr:I love you as that canoe.
51:47No, but listen, that, can I just say, I don't know, but that is delicious. I would, but the judges have their scores.
51:58Alan Carr:Sorry, love. Okay. Definitely. Alan Carr. Ten. Vito Coppola. Seven. Lee Peart. Nine. Oh, now, if you put seven up there, the audience up Strictly, I would encourage to boo. Oh boo! I tell you why, because I personally am not a big fan of the red wine. Right. So I personally prefer, you know, rosé and white wine. The red is the one, you know, that unless it's the one that makes, you know, my family, then it's a bit less my least favourite, you know. But seven for me is like very high. Yeah, it's a decent score. It's a decent score. Yeah, it's good. Yeah, okay. So we've got nine, ten and seven. They're top of the league.
52:46Alan Carr:We've seen more at the minute. We move on to... We've had this before. Oh no, it's another colour. You're actually right in a certain way because now that you are going to say the name of the wine, I tell you why. Say it. Tre fiori greco de tufo d 'och. Yeah, in tre fiori, it means three flowers. And again. Three flowers. That's a lucky number. I'm loving this threesome. It's the triplet that, you know, was familiar to you. We're three flowers blossoming. Three flowers. Ready to be watered. Exactly. I'll do it now. Couple of pansies. What flower would you be, Alan? Alan, if it could be a flower, what flower would you be?
53:28A rose. A net. Fuck off. It'd be Japanese knotweed.
53:37A begonia. Begonia? Yeah, beautiful, robust.
53:45Alan Carr:What would you be? Find them everywhere. What would you be if you were to be a flower? Sunflower. Oh. Oh, no. I love the sun. I love the day. I love the light. Yeah, I always turn towards... My grandfather said to me, every time you feel lost, look up and find the sun. Look for the sun. Oh, I just want to be Italian. My nan, when you look up, my nan told me, if you want to smoke, buy your own.
54:13And then...
54:18And then... You are a sunflower. Look towards the sun. We get such a shit deal. It's not fair. I want to be Italian. I want to be Italian.
54:33Alan Carr:Right, let's move on to the final one. Bright colour with Mediterranean herbs, citrus, white flowers, tropical fruit and a hint of minerality on the nose. you're getting that fresh, vibrant and complex taste what are you getting that? are you getting any tastes and flavours from that Vito? this one you would drink with Spaghetti alle Bungle oh I love Spaghetti alle Bungle you would use this one you would drink this one and that's it from spaghetti so what are we thinking about this wine then? so are we thinking what score? apparently let me have another taste it's elegant refreshing finish that's full of character if this was a wine what do you reckon it'd be?
55:11Alan Carr:It says it here. Have a guess. What wine would this be? Do you reckon? Have a taste. Vito, what wine do you think? I'm thinking. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. What do you think, Vito? For me, it could be... Macarena. For me, it could be a foxtrot. Really? Yeah, or if from the ballroom, if I have to choose one of the Latin, I would take a Roomba. It's actually close, it's saying salsa. Salsa? Is that close? Yeah, no.
55:50But you know what, just because I have the picture in my mind that I would drink this one.
55:55Alan Carr:Sunshine, energy and personality. It's the wine version of a holiday on the Amalfi Coast. Colorful, lively and impossible not to enjoy. The judges have their scores. Alan Carr. Eight. Eight. Vito Coppola. A nine with the sun. Oh, that's beautiful. Leap it. Six. Now the boo is for you. Wow, wow. Why? Why? Because I preferred the first white and I really loved the red, so I didn't want to give it a higher score than the first white. Look, if you put this one upside down. 69. Actually, no. It's not. No, 99, you idiots. So I can reveal that the first wine received 22.5 points. Round of applause for the first wine.
56:49Alan Carr:The third wine received 23 points. Oh, so who's going to Blackpool? Who's going to Blackpool? Well, they're lifting the glitter ball. It's not even Blackpool. It is. Who's going to Blackout? it is basically the second the red with 26 points yeah i think that was nice but that was because you you had a lower one because you don't like red it's fine we are we are we work together so it's fine we work together we're a good we are a good freeze we are we are when is your book out remind us when your book's coming out the book is out tomorrow exciting everyone can hold it in your hand yes you can hold it yeah and what what is the one thing that you want to take from you know people want to take from that book if they pick it up and read it what do you want them to take from it sometimes people to you know not just much to get inspired by the story itself you know but to understand that you can really really be happy without necessarily having you know complicated things in life you know the ingredients are the most simple one just you know flour eggs and you can make everything and also you know the love of your family if you have the love of your people you know it could be your family your friends people that you identify as your people you are good in life you know it's sharing is the fact that you can be between you know up and down i have been through uh down in my life and maybe people don't know this about me but i shared for the first time you know in this book and it's about you know how do you you know keep going it's like navigating you will never see a fish stopping and stay still you know it always move in the water the important is that you will never you will never stop you always smile we always say I say that all the time it means whatever happens never lose your smile you know always you know keep smiling and you know keep being appreciative and you know be grateful so what I do in the evening before I go to bed every time I do my prayers but in the morning I write five things I'm grateful for every morning.
58:54And it helps a lot. So through this book, of course, I want to share also recipes, my family recipe, which I never shared before. Some of them, it's the one that I cook on MasterChef, but some other are completely new. So some of them can fill some relation food-wise, dance-wise, you know, family, a journey through life. And I just, you know, I think sharing is caring. You know, I really mean it. Of course it is.
59:20Alan Carr:Every morning, five things. Yes, I have a diary and I write five things I'm grateful for. And, you know, you'll be surprised because sometimes if you don't write it down, you think, oh, you know, I don't know, I don't have many things. But after you realize that we are... Well, it's just reminding me of my friend who is notoriously negative. She said a few years ago, I'm going to start writing down 15 things every morning that I'm grateful for. And then a couple of weeks later, I said, how's that thing going where you write down? it's going good but I've had to narrow it down to three but it's good maybe steps but you are a positive person though and and that comes through and that's what the book is all about isn't it positivity powering through and whether you're swimming upstream or downstream keep going and also power of your family and if you haven't got family just finding people who are there to support you and say do what you got to do Vito best of luck for the book tomorrow thank you it's so exciting for you you're gonna be an author you're an author and also massive best of luck for strictly and we can't wait to watch and see who you're going to be partnered with thank you so much veto everyone thank you i hope you've enjoyed this episode of bottoms up if you want to follow us on socials it's at bottoms up show please come along and follow and as ever we love hearing from you so So please tell us your total triumphs, your wine disasters, your dilemmas, or any questions that you've got for us.
