In short

Bottoms Up (Alan Carr and Lee Peart) discusses summer drinking and wine choices, framed around Wimbledon and “Pimms o’clock,” plus a wine-tasting showdown: Prosecco vs Cava (and a rosé option). They joke about age milestones, astrology (Gemini vs Cancer), and “clack” (unpleasant bitterness/astringency).

Key claims

Prosecco is made quickly via the Charmat method, while English sparkling/traditional methods take years; “Brut” is drier than “Extra Dry”; Cava (traditional method) offers more “quality for your money” around £10 and can taste more “champagne-like.”

Notable examples

they compare specific bottles—Sainsbury’s Prosecco (~£10), M&S Cava (~£9), Waitrose Sir Lowry Cabernet Sauvignon (~£15) and “Chocolate Block” (~£27), plus a Waitrose rosé Cador New (~£8 on offer).

Guests

Katie Lawton, a wine expert/Instagram personality known for sparkling wine and “wine horoscopes,” who calls herself “queen of cava” and evaluates Prosecco/Cava/rosé.

For those of you listening, Lee is crying at a Nescafe advert from yesteryear. I mean, that's just that. Lee! Come on! And that's what I call a meal deal. Love thy neighbour. Are you writing this down? Sorry about that.

1:36Alan Carr:I didn't realise.

1:41Alan Carr:Hello and welcome to Bottoms Up with me, Alan Carr and Lee Peart. Yes, it is the show where we know as much about wine as Alan knows about moderation. That's nice. I'm just reading what it says in the script Okay If you have an issue with how that's written Yes Contact HR I'm not going to have a go at you Because it's your birthday next week It is What date? July the 16th 16th And I was celebrating a couple of weeks ago Wasn't I? Were you? Because you left my house Yes you were You were very Yeah Moved into my new place Yes Lovely Oh Yeah, new style. I feel like, yeah, but, well, you've obviously just had your 50th, so that's a big thing.

2:30Alan Carr:I know. I turned 36, so I feel okay. Sometimes an age can make you go, hmm. Well, 50. I know, that's a milestone. I know, I know. Because then the milestones get less and less as you get older. What do you mean? What? Well, your next is 60. Because it was first like 16, 18, 21, 30, 40. Oh, yeah. And then there's those people that say, oh, you know, 50, Ella? You only got another 26 summers. Whoa, whoa, whoa. Who says that to you? Someone said it to me. 26 summers. If you're lucky. All right. Talking of summer, welcome drink, Pimms. Oh, yeah, Wimbledon's here. Wimbledon. I've never been to it. Have you been to it?

3:13Alan Carr:They invite me to Wimbledon, but I don't know if it looks boring. It does look boring. I don't think they'll be inviting you much longer. I think it's a poor man's swing ball. There I said it. You do have a swing ball in your garden. I love swing ball. How's my... Do you know what? Do you want to know my claim to fame? I played swing ball with Martina Navratilova. Mic drop. When? On Shatty Man? Yeah, yeah, well, yeah. Yeah, you make it out like... It was contractually obliged to play. Makes it feel like she just poked her head over. What was that? Hello, Alan. I love that you have like completely just taking the piss out of her sport.

3:55Alan Carr:Let's play swing ball. East to the road. I want to know. I don't get it. Go on. I mean, that's just that. For those of you listening, Lee's having a wank.

4:16Alan Carr:No, but that's too much. How's my, what's it called? Limbo set. Because that's next to your swing ball. Oh, yeah. Your garden's like a playground. Lee bought me a limbo set for my garden. Those stupid things you do. I used it once, but when my tits knocked it off, it wasn't fun. It's a bit like that gambling advert, you know, when the fun stops. Stop, what's it? When the fun stops. I don't know. I was like, la, la, la, la, la, la. And then I saw it like, it was sort of wedged. I know, you got fat shamed by a limbo set. I know. You got down quite low. Yeah, how low can you go? But then actually you just walked under it, didn't you?

5:06Alan Carr:Oh dear. Your quiff knocked it off. Maybe that could... My top hat. Why do I join in on this? Every time. No, it's annoying. Yeah. Anyway, whatever. Pimms. You don't love Pimms, do you? No, no. Why not? Pimms o 'clock? I still don't like it. Pimms o 'clock or something. Heroin o 'clock. It doesn't mean I wanted it. I don't like it. Oh, damn, you've got me. Yeah. Just because you stick a clock up there doesn't mean I need to have it. Oh, it's so nice. Well, what I made once is I made, I had a recipe. Actually, maybe I'll find the recipe. What's it made of, Pimms? It's fruit and other stuff. I bought the actual juicy bit.

5:52Alan Carr:Yeah, I don't know. What's the veg? It's a bit like a, not veg, a fruit. It's like Apro. What's the veg? It's like Apro spritz. I don't know what Apro is. It's aperitif. No, but what is the fruit? Well, it's like an aperitif. So I... You don't know. Well, I made something. Maybe I'll give the recipe out, actually. I made legendary, I say that because my mum used to say, I'm going to make my world famous tiramisu. It's not even famous in Grimsby. It's literally not world famous. But I made my legendary Turbo Pimms. Tastes just like Pimms. Massive alcohol content. Gets you fucked up, basically. What do you put in it?

6:37Alan Carr:There's gin, there's cognac, there's like liqueurs. And yeah, we had it once. No, but it tastes disgusting. No, it tastes like Pimms. But that's dangerous. But it's Turbo Pim's. My friend was like, I think you've got a problem if you're trying to push your Pim's mom. Please drink responsibly. To be honest, I think if you have a cocktail and Turbo is in front of me, it's your own fault. The call is coming from inside the house. You've had a power shandy. What's that? Oh my God, that's awful. That is awful. What is it? It is a pint of lager and then you top it up with... Because I had one and I...

7:15Alan Carr:You're getting... It was so disgusting. And then I had the worst hangover the next day. As I took the washing out of the washing machine, I vomited over the clothes. And then just had to put them back in the wash. Well, that's all right. I took the chunky bits off. Oh, for God's sake, Alan. It's a bit like the top of this pin. What, do you put in a power shandy? You have a pint glass, lager up to there, and then you top it up with smirnoff ice. Oh. No, not for me. Honestly, it is rank. What was I going to say? We were talking earlier, birthdays. You're a Gemini, I'm a Cancer. Yes. And you've been looking into some astrology.

7:58Alan Carr:Do you believe in astrological? Well, I do when it's written like this. Alan, Gemini, highly intellectual, witty. Would you say that? Yes, I would actually. Cerebral, quick-witted and enjoys deep conversations and a debate. You don't like deep conversations. Not really. No, I get, gives me the ick. You get bored a bit, like, if we start overthinking things. Yeah, politics, ugh. Yeah. Adaptable. Adaptable, yeah. Versatile, I didn't know you were versatile. You're known as... I'm a turbo bottom.

8:36Alan Carr:Known as the chameleon of the Zodiac. Yeah, I can blend into any social situation. You're communicative and charismatic. Natural conversationalist, well, we all know that. Love exchanging ideas. That's me. However, restless and easily bored. Get on with it. He requires constant mental stimulation and dislikes monotony. Monopoly. And other board games. Monotomy. Dislikes monopoly. And that is true, because the other day, will you help me with this, love? I need to go through an action point. I'm an elderly lady. I said, yeah, yeah, yeah. Read it out. I'll help you through it. It's really important.

9:21Alan Carr:Action point one. Decide whether... I can't. It's boring. And he got up and left the room. I can't. It's too boring. Something happened. I hear white noise. I do. Honestly, boy. Dual nature. Gemini men can change their minds, opinions or moods rapidly. When have I ever done that? You always do that. Okay, well, let's have a look at you, Lee. Cancer. Now, I'm going to guess. Hard shell, soft heart. That's what they say about the cancer crab. Ah, vindictive, I've got here. Vindictive and cruel. Do you want to talk about vindictive? I'll tell you who's vindictive. You in that shirt. You know I love that shirt.

10:02Alan Carr:And you know I want that shirt. Okay. Lee stayed at my house and I'll be honest, a few of my shirts weren't missing. You're a liar. You're a liar. And some costume jewellery. I did you a favour. Now, I very kindly said, okay, it's no secret, I have piled on the pounds. So there's a few shirts that I couldn't fit in anymore and I said, Lee, please, I think they look great on you and I gave you, there were some nice designer shirts. Gorgeous Gucci shirts. Gorgeous shirts. I said, please, you have them. Him, uh, uh, uh, uh, pushes past me like my wardrobe is a TK Maxx. what about this I said well I can fit in that um I'm joking I'm joking oh wow I guess I am vindictive you are um and so he said I want that I want that and I said no you can't have that I'm wearing it and then he's always wanted it and I you know maybe I am a bit vindictive but I know he wants it he said this morning I'm feeling in a spiteful mood today so I'm going to wear that shirt so that's a bit mean isn't it And then I also said, I want to be buried in it so he could never, ever wear it.

11:22Alan Carr:So emotional and sensitive. You do cry a lot. You well up so easily. I know. I always remember the Nescafe advert because I used to cry adverts all the time. We used to now, weren't we, poor Anthony Head? No, it wasn't that one. Oh, okay. We still did. But not forgotten. So it was the one where it would go, put your hand up if we've not spoke for a while, people. And you'd go, you got time for a chat now? I'm well enough thinking about it now. It was so sad. It was like, oh, they've not seen each other for a long time and they're doing it over at Nescafe. For those of you listening, Lee is crying at a Nescafe advert from yesteryear.

12:09Alan Carr:Do you ever cry at the John Lewis one? Yes. Oh, give over. That's so cynical. No, not anymore. Oh, no, they're sponsoring my castle. They are the most beautiful ever.

12:24Alan Carr:You've got to keep that in. Keep that in. They are the most beautiful scenes I've ever seen. Nurturing and protective. Yes, you are. Strong, sometimes possessive protective spirit over partners and family. Oh, this is sadly true. Home body. Yeah, can't get you out the house. My house. It's just other people's houses. Yes, moody and reserved. I'm not moody. Yes, you are. Look at this. Oh, fuck off. Get out of here. Look at this. Due to the moon's influence, they may have sudden moods. My grandma said that. Back when I was moody as a kid, and this made me even more moody, my grandma would go, he's a werewolf, he's a werewolf, he's ruled by the moon.

13:15Alan Carr:That used to piss me off even more. No one wants, if you're in a mood, to be called a werewolf. Your nan said this. My grandma, we don't say nan. Was she a witch? Grandma Mavis. He's a werewolf, he's a werewolf. She would go, he's a werewolf, he's ruled by the moon. And then if I was in a mood, my mum would go, oh, it's a full moon tonight. really annoying but they do say because the moon dictates the tide we're 70 % water well we're not

13:47Alan Carr:so how do Gemini and Cancer get on we do get along very well how? Gemini is the thinker in the relationship and Cancer is the feeler well have I got some stories haven't I Doctor Octopus I can hand on heart you have never felt me thank you thank you for clearing that I mean I've never felt you up you've never felt me up and I've never felt you up no bottoms up

14:22Alan Carr:so we're back I can't believe they've allowed us back at the WSET School London and we're back here in lovely Bermondsey as well East London East London London. God bless us. It's nice here, south of the river, because that sometimes gets a bad rap, doesn't it? Londoners will go, oh, not going south of the river. Why did they say that? I don't know, it's a bit snobby, but Bermondsey's up and coming, gentrified. My friend Tara used to say, you know a place is getting gentrified when the gays start moving in. That was her quote. Really? Was she homophobic?

15:05Alan Carr:This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. You know, sometimes, Lee, life can be a bit tough and you need someone to talk to, you know, offload. Lee, Lee, Lee, Lee, I've got, I want to offload. There's something I want to, Lee, Lee. Sorry, what? I said sometimes it's nice to have someone to talk to, to offload. Yes, I'm sorry about that. I got distracted. Yes, it is. And I will say therapy, being serious for a minute, changed my life because I was always one of them I got a therapist a few years ago and I was always one of those people who was like I don't need therapy nothing's wrong with me blah blah blah that was kind of sometimes the stigma I had and it was the best thing I did because even if you're not necessarily having a hard time it's just talking to someone there's nothing wrong with talking I think people just imagine you're gonna you're laying down like on a couch and talking in a darkest fear yeah it's talking it's like what we do on here yeah and that's why better help is good because what it does is it matches you to a qualified and experienced therapist that you can just have in your pocket basically whenever you feel like you need to talk and again sometimes it's the moments where you don't feel like you want to talk where they're the best ones they always talk about breakthroughs in therapy and that was the one for me I remember having a therapist when everything was going quite nice in my life and that was a really good time to kind of actually look at it from more of a bird's eye point of view, rather than being stuck in the whirlwind of stuff.

16:33Alan Carr:People also think stand-up comedians are miserable in real life, but you're just as funny off stage as you are on.

16:42Alan Carr:I just need to get better help now for... Deal with that comment. And I'm here. I'm here for you. The therapist would say, that's projection. Cheers. 17:21Alan Carr:every week we love your dilemmas we love your queries we love all your questions not because we care but because we're nosy so true lee what's the dilemma well i will tell you this is from louise and ruby nice names always tell a lot ruby lovely name louise is dying out i would probably say as a name so is alan you know Oh, Alan. I've mentioned this before. Alan is like a white rhino. That's my brother, Gary. Oh, shit. Yeah, they're not. Alan and Gary. They're quite boring names. I was going to be Elaine if I was a girl. Oh, yeah. Well, I would have been Layla, which is my younger sister's name.

18:00Alan Carr:Yeah, Layla. Or Liam or Luke. We like the L's. Yeah. Eloise, Layla, Lee, Leslie. You're like the Kardashians of Grimsby. Yeah. And it? Yeah. Well, there's Carl as well. Does your mum have like a great ass? Oh, what an awful thought. So, let's move on to Louise and Ruby. Hi, Alan and Lee. My wife, Ruby, and I really love the chocolate block from South Africa. And we treat ourselves to a bottle now and again on special occasions. However, it's not cheap. At£27 a bottle, Louise, Ruby. and we were wondering whether there was a slightly cheaper alternative out there that would have the same great taste loving the show Lee you are carrying this single-handedly love Louise and Ruby that's so nice let's have a look at this oh this is Franchoc Syrah Grenache Cabernet Sauvignon yes Sinsult yes very good and Voynier yes Voynier So adding layers of complexity, this is a full-bodied South African red blend.

19:19Alan Carr:So let's start with the chocolate block. Why is it called a chocolate block? I'm not sure. Maybe because it's a bit chocolatey, maybe. Got a nice little chocolatey taste. On the palate, you've got dense core of black fruits, black currant, bramble and dark cherry wrapped in warm spice. What did you do? Nothing.

19:40Alan Carr:I will watch that back. So, let's have a taste of this. I don't know. What are you doing? What? Back at school. Oh, back at WSCT. What would Shane say? We don't want Shane to come in and start whipping us with his wine whip. I know. All right. Oh, I can see why they spend£27 on that. That's delish. Do you know what? It doesn't taste of chocolate, but you get an aroma, doesn't it? Dark chocolate. Do you get that? Which I learned as well when you're having read, dark chocolate is the best because, do you remember Helena said, the milk chocolate can affect the taste. I have learnt that. Do you know what ruins a red wine?

20:22Alan Carr:Have you ever had Skittles? The sweets? Yeah. Oh, the wine just changed. Well, why? I can't imagine you eating Skittles. Now they were there on the side, I must be the pig. I think, you know, oh, they're all Skittles. Oh, the wine, I just didn't even want to drink any more. I have a rule. They should give that to people who are trying to cut down. I have a rule. The doctor diagnoses you Skittles. I have a rule that some things you're too old to eat. Like my friend, no, like my friend Craig eats Milky Way stars. I consider you too old to eat them. Yeah, and also that Billy Bear. Billy Bear ham.

21:08Alan Carr:Billy Bear ham. If you're over what? What's the cutoff point? 6.15? 6.15? What? No. That was the age. 6.15? No, I wasn't saying there's a time you can't have Billy Bear ham after 6.15. I see someone eating a sandwich at 6.16. Half the curfew. Billy Bear Ham, nine. Nine, okay. Skittles, I dare say 17. No, they're an adult. No, they're not, they're not, they're not. You should not be eating Skittles. Milky Way? Milky Way. Finger of Fudge. Finger of Fudge is like 92. Old people like that, don't they? Yeah, yeah, like Werther's Original. That's fine, that's ageless. So, we've got... Sorry about that, Louise and Ruby, if you're still with us.

22:00Alan Carr:Chocolate box, it is lovely. I understand. £27 is spare neighbour for a treat, but let's try and see if we can save you money. Let's move on to Journey's End. Sir Lowry, Cabernet Sauvignon. The Lowry, lovely stuff, Sir Lowry. This is£15 from Waitrose. You've got a rich Bordeaux meets Rhone-style blend from Stellenbosch. In here, you've got your dark fruit, you've got spice, slightly smoky finished with black pepper and cocoa. Again, similar to chocolate block. Let's see how it varies. Now, already quite like the smell. We'll say that. A Cab Sav, you can't go wrong. Oh, that's nice. It's not as smoky as that chocolate block, is it?

22:46Alan Carr:No, but it is. Let's have another taste of the chocolate block. Yeah, but how much is this one? How much is the Cabernet Sauvignon? £15, so it's almost half the price. I think that's... Yeah. Okay, well, let's reserve judgment. We're not saying that's bad. the chocolate block, but for saving your money, that's almost the same. We could basically get two bottles of that as opposed to the one chocolate block. All right, really nice. Let's move on to the wolf trap. Okay, screw tap, screw top, but we know that's not a problem. It's not a problem, no. Screw tap or top is not a problem. Not letting you get away with that one.

23:25Alan Carr:So, I won't tell you how much this is. Oh, piss flaps. for the purpose of the listener. He's not annoyed over the price. He spilt it on the table. I won't tell you how much this is, but let's have a taste. So this is from the same winery as Chocolate Block, all right? And they say this is kind of Chocolate Block's sibling. It's a little bit more watery, I would say. It's not got the depth. Slight clack. You know, I hate clack. Oh my God, I got a message the other day from a listener Like I said, they're on holiday and they went to a vineyard and him and his husband apparently were just going, tasting wines, going, oh, nice, no clack.

24:09Alan Carr:It's the proudest thing I've ever thought. It's all about the clack. Oh, we should get merch. No clack. We're bringing sexy clack. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Back to clack. Clack to the future. Yeah. Clack to the future. Yes. Oh, dear. Okay, well, the Wolf Trap will set you back. Get me guess. I think that's the cheapest. I think£9.99. Really? Yeah. £11.50, but you are right at being the cheapest. It is the same winery, but less than half the price of the Chocolate Block. It is its more affordable, easier drinking sibling. What I will say is, it is a lot, it's got less depth. Chocolate Block, it's got less depth.

24:55Alan Carr:For those of you listening, Lee is choking. I was getting a bit of an indigestion. Emotional. No, I'm not getting it. I'm thinking of Nescafe again. God, such a sad advert. Chocolate block is a celebratory wine. But if you want to save a bit of money, which Louise and Ruby do. Sir Lowry, Journey's End Cabernet Sauvignon. Yeah, I would go for that. I would avoid the wolf trap because you're not going to get the depthness that they clearly like from a chocolate trap. If you're having the wolf trap, I would have a handful of skills just to give it a kick. Yeah. Brilliant. There you go. Ruby and Louise.

25:34Alan Carr:Cheers. Bottoms up. Bottoms up. Hey, it's Christy from Lululemon. I'm here at the office and we just dropped some really fun new summer colors in the Flow Y styles. She's here to help us navigate the weird and wonderful world of wine. is Katie Lawton. Hello, Katie. Hi. But Katie, tell me, you love kava. You're the queen of kava. I love sparkling. Sparkling wine is what I drink the most. What is it about the bubbles? Do you know what? I've always liked fizzy drinks. Do you like sparkling water? Yeah, I love sparkling water. Do you like sparkling conversation? Bubbles, darling. So listen, what star sign are you in? Do you believe? Oh, let's guess. Because I'm quite good at star signs.

27:18Alan Carr:So you are a Capricorn. Absolutely not. No, I said... You are an Aquarius. No, you're not. Oh, I think you're Taurus. No. Gemini. I'm a Gemini rising, but not... Oh, okay. So you're a Leo. No. Are you Cancer? No. Oh, Sagittarius. Taurian. It must be the one you haven't mentioned. No, I did mention it. I don't think Russell Grant's going to lose any sleep, is he? Oh, I know. You're an Aries. Oh, you're a Pisces. Libra. There, I told you. I knew it. That's quite balanced, isn't it? Are you balanced? Are you the goat? Is Libra the goat? No, I got scales. You didn't get it. Just back off. Coming out now, now we're going to go for all like a petting zoo.

28:11Alan Carr:Are you a scorpion? rats that's Scorpio I'm a Libra do you know what's so funny this week I did a post on my Instagram and it was your wine horoscope so I matched your star sign with your wine tell me what's my star what you're a Gemini so you were English sparkling oh you like what am I then cancer you were a Bordeaux I think love that yeah love a Bordeaux great much like Scorpio because that's the sinister one isn't it it all sets out like a poison drink It was an Amaroni actually. Complex and bleach. Oh, interesting. Yeah, I love a star sign. So where do you stand on clack? I hate clack. When you say clack, what does it mean to you?

28:58Alan Carr:It's like, you know when you drink, you go... If it makes your face like this, if it makes you wince, I like it smooth. Smooth, okay, so if it's like a bit too... And the worst kind of clack is carver. went that's what i'm just saying it oh interesting yeah we're gonna change that really i think yeah what happened then because everyone was having when everyone had carver back in the 80s didn't it and it was like oh let's have a carver and then all of a sudden no one had a carver i'll tell you who came up the rear prosecco did a secco came along came up the rear prosecco entered as a kind of uh cheaper alternative at the time um i think it was because of their financial crisis and uh People had less money to spend.

29:42And then Prosecco was this cool, fun, flirty younger sister because it is a lot faster to make. So it's a lot cheaper to kind of create. But today, what I want to do is, I think at the moment, we're all watching the pennies and people think when you're looking for an affordable sparkling wine, your only option is Prosecco, really. But I want to say that Carver is actually giving you a lot more quality for your money. And it's about the same price point now, about the kind of£10 mark on the shelf.

30:09Alan Carr:Yeah, and I will say, I do think Prosecco can give you a mighty, mighty hangover. I have to agree with you. Yeah, it can be difficult. Especially after a bottomless brunch. Yes. We've all been there. We found the bottom. Oh yeah, we were at the bottom. Lee! Lee! Come on!

30:34Alan Carr:Bottomless brunch though, God, it's like preparing for a marathon, isn't it? Have you ever been to a bottomless brunch? No. You've never been to a bottomless brunch? Oh, you should. Oh, that's sad. No one's invited me to a bottomless brunch. To be fair, most of his brunches are bottomless. Yeah, I mean, they start out as brunch. Yeah. Get hijacked. I mean, you can get ones where you upgrade to champagne. Yes. They're a bit less hangover. Well, I went to, yeah, there were some really good ones I've been to. The Avery do quite a good one, actually. Whispering Angel on tap. Oh. But I'm against that now.

31:10Alan Carr:I've gone off that. Yeah. How much does it cost to go to a bottomless brunch? Talk me through it. So basically, you usually get like two hours, generally. And you can drink as much as you want. Bottomless, yeah. So it's just like... It's all marketing, innit? Yeah. By putting bottomless brunch. Well, yeah. Because you do try and drink as much as you can, but actually to the point of not enjoying it, because you're just like, let's go. So if I went to a Weatherspoon, it's all about marketing. So I go to a Wetherspoons at 10am and just got paralytic till 12. That's a bottomless brunch. But because it's with a load of old men.

31:44Is that right?

31:46Alan Carr:That is a bottomless brunch. Well, no, technically not. Why? Because bottomless, you pay for it beforehand. You're just buying drinks out of Wetherspoons. Oh. Oh, so it's just a brunch. so we're going to start with Prosecco because we're doing one Prosecco and then two Carvers a white and a rosé to compare okay and just see which you prefer there's no wrong answers here with WSET is there no well there is actually it's a school yeah lots of wrong answers now how thirsty are you I don't really understand school there's no wrong answers at school I'll guess there we go so starting with Prosecco Yeah.

32:33Why don't they give this service a bottomless brunch?

32:36Alan Carr:It's like 50p. Thank you. Say when. No, please. Would you like some more? Go on then. I'll do it, babes. I'll do it. Okay, so we are starting with Prosecco, which is from Italy, from northern Italy. And the process of making Prosecco is called the Charmat method. And you can make Prosecco in a few months. whereas the traditional method which is how you make champagne how you make english sparkling takes years so it's a very different process hence why it's usually a bit more expensive except carver is the little hack so give it a taste see what you think or give it a sniff use your what you've learned well yes nose okay let's look at the color really light isn't it yeah really light i'm getting i'm kind of getting lemony there because you know there's lemon that means young and fresh yes yeah there's no orange in that so by default that makes it lemon 100 thank you you're just quoting what that man said to you yes it's my unique selection of wine based things i think you get kind of pears on the nose like pear drops yeah i'm getting pears yeah yeah This is actually a Brut.

33:55And one thing to look out for, if you're buying Prosecco but you want a dry Prosecco, don't buy one that says extra dry on the label because it's actually sweeter than a Brut. This is what the wine people do. They make it harder for themselves. So look for Brut when you're looking for Prosecco. That's a good hack, that, because I've got all dry.

34:15Alan Carr:So if you like a dry Prosecco, someone... And then you go like that. Yeah. It'll be full of clack. Has this got clack? This hasn't got clack. But if you were to put that on the label, you'd say extra clack. Wouldn't you? Because it's got no clack. Exactly. Fucking stupid. Why? They should bring up their marketing. Prosecco, now with clack. That's why you need people like me to help you with deciphering labels because they are, they can be mean. So brute is dry. Dry. Extra dry is not dry. Not as dry. It's sweet. Yeah, not as dry. Not as dry. Okay, should we get a carver open? Yeah. Next one. It's interesting that, isn't it?

35:01So would you buy that Prosecco? It's about£10 a bottle. That one's from Sainsbury's.

35:06Alan Carr:Well, listen, if you're doing like a celebratory thing, you want to serve welcome drinks or something, Prosecco is a safe option, yes. Yeah, it's got enough fizz in there to go, oh, I'm celebrating something, innit? It doesn't blow me away. No, it's easy. It's just like, yeah. And maybe if you were making mimosas or anything like that, you could have... That's a good idea. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You know my hack with mimosas? Always freshly squeeze the orange juice. Oh, great. It just elevates it to the next level. Okay, now on to the kava. Okay, love. What's that thing for me? You could release a kava.

35:47Alan Carr:Ka-va. Oh, I like that. Alan Carver. What about you, Bloody Mary? Yes. Oh, I love Bloody Mary. Bloody Mary. Yeah. Long Island Iced Lee. Yes. Do you think you're going to make a wine? I feel like you should after this. We'd like to make a wine, wouldn't we? Yeah. Have you been approached? No. No. Oh. I'll speak to my people. I don't know why. Yeah, I mean, a nice red. I'd like to do a lovely red. Oh, my God, imagine being able to drink your own red. Yeah. Oh. It would have to be called Bottoms Up, surely. Yes, it would be. Yeah, but is that... Or maybe Be You. Please drink... Be You. Be You. No, please...

36:31Alan Carr:It's about self-expression. Please drink responsibly. Yes. Leave the Alan Carr at home.

36:41Alan Carr:Brilliant. There we go. Write this down. Dragon's Den, now. For the purpose of the listeners, we are holding up the glasses. Yes. To the right of us is very pale. To the left, golden. Yes, exactly. And do you know why? Orange. Orange. There's a few reasons for that. One is there are different grapes used to make Prosecco and Cava. So Prosecco is made from a grape called Galera. And then with the Cava, you have three Spanish grapes, Macabeo, Chorello, which actually starts with an X, so a bit complicated. And then Palaiada. They are like names that someone from Hampstead would call their children.

37:25You're going to remember them, aren't you? I'm like Gwyneth Paltrow's kids. And then also the Carver is a 2022, so it's older. So usually with a sparkling. So it's aged. It will get darker.

37:41Alan Carr:Definitely a distinct in taste there. You can tell one is Prosecco. and actually I dare say I'd go oh is that champagne you wouldn't necessarily know it tastes champagne-y it's got a crispness to it hasn't it and it's that pink it's the lightness what I like about traditional methods so the way that kava's made like champagne I feel like when you have a sip your mouth is kind of refreshed whereas I think prosecco kind of lingers in your mouth do you know what I mean whereas because they're finer bubbles in Carver. It's just very clean. Yes. And actually, if you were to, I'm thinking about welcome drinks here.

38:18Alan Carr:I don't know why, but I've just got welcome drinks in my head. Well, summer's coming. Summer's coming. Apparently. And a Carver like this, how much is this retailing at? £9 from M &S. Less than the Prefects? It's actually less, yeah. Oh my God, and it's M &S. Yeah. Get some picky bits. That would make me go, oh, you've spent a lot on the welcome drinks. If it's just Prosecco, I might be like, oh, it's Prosecco. But actually, this I would think it's champagne. Oh, love that. That's a plot twist. And that plot twist. Right, do you want to try the rosé? Yes. Let's do it. You're not going to ask for this.

38:53Alan Carr:Skittles. Do you know why it made the wine taste so bad? Why? It's because, yeah, it was a sweet food and then you had a dry wine and it just tasted awful. That's why you need a sweet wine with desserts. Ah. Yeah. Do you think I'm too old for Skittles? Yeah. Yeah. I'm so sorry. I appreciate your honesty. I'm so sorry. Maybe like a wine gum or... Yeah, wine gum. Wine gums. Now, they are age-less. Too old for Skittles. Move on to a wine gum. Cheeky cow.

39:28Alan Carr:What's your favourite flavour? What, Skittles? Yeah. They all go down the same way. No, no. Do you... No. I go like that. Oh, did you go individual Skittles? We don't go individual, but you don't shovel them like a horse. You're just necking Skittles. I neck Skittles. Who goes? Oh.

39:47Alan Carr:No one eats a Skittle individual. In terms of colours. I'm busy. I ain't got time to pick out colours. Purple, the best colour in there. Agree. Followed by orange. Disagree. Oh, my God. Followed by green. Yeah. Followed by red. No, followed by yellow. Yeah. I agree, apart from the orange. Okay, so we're on to the rosy. So you could have this if you were younger. Oh, yeah. You whip for snappers. I can't even put my ear-nate in. I didn't even... I got a skittle wedged in my ear. Poor colour. Okay. You must have favourite colours of food. Oh, fuck off. Can we just get on with it? What a stupid question.

40:39Alan Carr:They're all the same. Okay, so moving on to rosé. And this is Cador New. Have you come across this? Yes, I have. Brand before. It's very famous because it's the oldest winery in Spain and the first people to make carver. Really? Family business. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So huge history. And they make really high quality carvers. And we're going to try this lovely rosé, which actually has different grapes in it. this has Pinot Noir in it and a local grape called Trepat and then also Grenache which you might have tried as a red yeah yeah yeah I've heard of that okay lovely colour don't be scared and champagne uses Pinot Noir as the grape it does yes yes yes and there's actually some Chardonnay in this cava as well so you're allowed some Spanish grapes but then also some global worldwide grapes as well right but yeah does that colour scare you or I love the fruity smell what I will say My eyes is going, that's got clack.

41:35Alan Carr:No, I'm not just saying it for clack. Clack pink. Clack pink. But you're not just saying it for clack bait. Nice. I like that. No, however, what I will say is this colour, as just a rosé non-sparkling, would scare me. But with the sparkling, it doesn't. That's interesting, isn't it? It's really interesting. So we're okay with the dark? I didn't think you'd get a more boring question than what's your favourite skittle flavour. You brought them up.

42:10Alan Carr:Deadly sound. You're getting on my nerves now. I know we're meant to get along. Star sign. Star sign. We started going, we changed star sign. Yeah. No, but would you say the same with that? With the sparkling, it's not as scary. Yeah, when I see that colour on a normal wine, I'm like, my lips are already starting to go that, that, that. But I think, yeah, you take a chance of a spark but you see the bubbles you get a bit more adventurous really nice really drinkable yeah it's similar I would say to a Prosecco yeah it's got the kind of sweetness of fruit to it and dare I ask how much so this is currently on offer for£8 but it's£11 that's amazing £11 as a as a normal price yeah on the shelf from Waitrose that that tastes like it's expensive isn't it well exactly and if you were again I don't know why focusing on welcome drinks like that would be people only stay for one drink at this house because I'm telling these boring stories everyone's like oh no my alarm's gone off I've double booked

43:16it's good lovely welcome drink lovely colour yeah

43:20Alan Carr:and also there's something about that that people think oh you know when you've got rose they add to it people think you spend a bit more that's ironic that it's less and also the bottle itself looks a little bit more fancy see if you were going to gift this and bring it in. Great gift. Great idea, yeah. So, in summary, what do we think? Are you reaching for, if you've got£10 to spend, are you reaching for a Prosecco or are you reaching for a Carver? I think Alan's reaching for the£8 rosé, £2 of it, bag of Skittles. That's my own meal deal. That's what I call a meal deal.

43:58Alan Carr:no i um what i will say is all right if you like prosecco some people just love prosecco they love quaffing it down very drinkable fair really nice if you are a little bit more on the champagne side i would 100 % recommend this carver because i tasted that and i thought if i was doing a blind taste test i would maybe even guess that that was champagne itself love that if you want something a little bit more zhuzh-y, a little bit more celebratory, the rosé, the organic rosé. And also, you know, you've got a story to it. It's the first people that have ever done Carver. Exactly. We've just got time for a question from one of our viewers.

44:35Alan Carr:I want to know if my wine hack is an acceptable one, okay, Katie? With a fancy bottle, I can't be asked to wait for the wine to breathe because an hour is a long time when you're thirsty. I use a milk froffer from Ikea. it airs the wine much quicker and changes the flavour so I highly recommend it what are your thoughts? Love the pod it's Lewis from Brentwood the idea of it is you're aerating the wine so you're putting more oxygen into the wine it's going to make it smoother and which is I think he's comparing to a decanting which you leave out for an hour in a kind of oxygen exposure Lewis can't wait he can't wait an hour so to be fair if that's something a hack that works for you go for it I think with wine it can be snobby So I think however you want to drink wine, whether you want to put ice in it, whether you want to drink this or that, do what works for you with no judgment.

45:26Alan Carr:But obviously if you're the Ritz or something, you're not going to pull an Ikea fropper out of your bum bag and start going. It wouldn't be very chic. No. And also, I don't like the thought of metal going into my wine. Can I tell you what? I hate one of my wine grites. Go on. When they pour the wine at bars into that metal measure and then pour it in. And I hate seeing it. I hate seeing my wine, my wine, go into that metal thing, then into my glass. I don't think it's fair. I think just pour it. You're not saving that much money. I hate it.

46:04Alan Carr:The best bars and the best restaurants are where they just pour it into the glass for you. They can do it by eye. Rather than you standing there and them going to make sure. Because you go abroad, you go abroad, the man's like this. like, hey, hola, hola, la, la, la. No one's like, you know, over here. It's like, worried that someone might get an extra drop. A little bit more. Love thy neighbour. That's what I would say. And just enjoy it. Just be free. That's what's wrong with this country. I think, to be fair to hospitality, the margins are so small that little drops will... Oh, take his side.

46:43Alan Carr:It is on its knees. It is on its knees. so we should support the hospitality industry. So you should apologise, Alan. Sorry about that. I didn't realise. Carry on with your metal thing.

47:02Alan Carr:All right. Okay, let's do it. Are we trying this then? Yeah, luckily I brought my frother. Okay, so we are trying a Cabernet Sauvignon. So you're going to pour us a glass there. thank you very much give that a go and let's try that before we froth right lovely thank you mmm what are you thinking a bit of clack clack a bit clacky okay okay so this will work quite well with this wine because it's a full body oh metal metal metal oh shut up you weirdo carry on high tannin wine okay so we're gonna give it a whiz oh oh it's almost looking a bit like smoothie smoothie yeah I don't know how long you're meant to do it for oh I'll try oh it almost looks like fizzy now do you want to try it yeah I'll try it go on whiz your own oh let me have a little

48:04it looks quite pretty when you do it I look quite pretty thank you

48:11Alan Carr:but it's all of me I look quite pretty that's enough froth please would you like to for someone who didn't like metal would you like would you like to froth no Katie's yeah froth mine okay would you press that button yeah

48:33Alan Carr:it's quite nice isn't it quite relaxing it's a form of meditation yeah there you go thank you Pop that back in your handbag so much. She doesn't carry, go anywhere without a milk proper. I'd be a milk proper. So, let's have a taste of this. I think that's made it worse. It's lost some bites. It's lost something. It's lost something. It has smoothed it out. There's less tannin. Can I just say, I think it's not worth the stigma of whipping that out in a restaurant and frothing in front of your fellow diners and then putting them back, I think it's not worth it. It's not worth it. Trust it. Trust the process.

49:20Alan Carr:Yeah. There you go, Lewis from Brentwood. We wouldn't bother.

49:26Alan Carr:There you go. But thank you for getting in touch. We do want to hear from everyone. Maybe one day we'll have something sent in that is normal. thank you Katie so much can we follow you on Instagram can we get hacks please do I'm at endofthewine endofthewine I don't know if you remember the honeys from the 90s the honeys H-O-N-E-Y-Z yeah yeah yeah I love that of course he does they have a song end of the line and that's where it's inspired by how's it go again come to the end of the line aww

50:11Give me a follow. Lots of recommendations. Lots of sparkling.

50:15Alan Carr:Yeah, no, honestly, though, that sparkling is revelatory because especially that middle one, very champagne-like. Very champagne-like. And easy on the pocket. Lovely. Thank you so much. Shady Lorden, everyone. Thank you, Kitty. If you've enjoyed this episode of Bottoms Up, then why not join us on our socials at Bottoms Up Show. Lee shares his recipe for a Turbo Pimms, while Alan reveals his infamous Power Shandy – the concoction that ended with him vomiting into a load of freshly washed clothes… which promptly had to go straight back in the machine.

Elsewhere, the boys compare zodiac signs to see if they're astrologically compatible, Lee gets emotional over a Nescafé advert from yesteryear, and Alan reveals the questionable combination he recently discovered: red wine and Skittles.

Plus, wine communicator Katie Lawton joins the boys to settle an important debate: which gives you more bang for your buck – cava or prosecco?
