In short

Strategic thinking for business leaders—how to move from chaos to clarity using three shifts: (1) busyness to bravery (prioritize purpose; say no; use the four D’s: ditch, delay, delegate, do), (2) reactive thinking to systemized thinking (solve root causes with SOPs/automation/AI; track repeated problems and build frameworks), and (3) uncertainty to intentional strategy (choose a roadmap based on values/vision/goals even with incomplete info; refine as you go; the cost of indecision is higher than mistakes).

Key claims

clarity is created, not waited for; systems support creativity/humans; strategy becomes momentum through commitments.

Notable examples

managing crises in the travel industry (COVID, 9/11 ash cloud, hurricanes/evacuations).

0:00The resources that you have, you can deploy them in a more meaningful way that ultimately serves your customers, your clients, to give them a better experience, a better product.

0:15So today we are talking all about how we actually go from chaos to clarity. It's all about really mastering that strategic thinking in business. So big hello to you all, you brave, bold, brilliant leaders. It's Jeanette here and today we're diving into a real game-changing topic that genuinely separates good businesses from great ones and overwhelm leaders from focused, powerful decision makers. So as I say, that topic, it's strategic thinking. Now this isn't just about planning or goal setting but it really is that ability to step back zoom out and make decisions from clarity not chaos because you know let's be honest running a business it can feel chaotic you know there are fires to put out clients to serve team members to guide and you know a seemingly never-ending lists of tasks emails ideas you know and and distractions you know does that sound familiar to you it It certainly is familiar to me.

1:25So it's something that is very close to my heart. And this strategic thinking is really where I have honed in myself in terms of the very large global businesses that I've run when I was a corporate CEO. Also today with my own portfolio of businesses, you know, it's so important, but also with the clients that I advise and the businesses that I work with today. So whether we are talking about corporate boards running huge, multi-billion pound businesses, or we're talking, you know, SME businesses, so small or mid-sized businesses, or even solopreneurs, it's really easy to get caught in the weeds and to operate in that reaction mode.

2:08So really what I spend a lot of my time on is working with the people, with the teams, with the organizations that I help to really zoom out and take more of that strategic thinking. So just as a reminder for you, if we are not connected on social media, please let's get connected because that's the way we can support and help each other. You're going to find me all over LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, even TikTok. and so and of course so Jeanette Linfoot you can follow me in my personal profile which is two N's and two T's in Jeanette or equally you know if you want to connect with us on Brave Bold Brilliant we would love that we're here to help so do check out the podcast you might be actually listening to this as a podcast episode or you might be watching it live on our YouTube channel but hit that subscribe button because that is really how we will continue to grow this amazing community of business leaders and business owners and corporate execs and people who really want to make a difference in the world.

3:13So if that's you, hit that subscribe button because then you're going to get notified every time we go live, every time a new episode comes out. And that's why we're here. We're here to serve you, to help you and really to unlock that greatness in you, your teams and your business. So when we are, you know, in that reaction mode, we often confuse movement with momentum, but it is not the same. It really isn't the same. So, you know, leaders and businesses that truly thrive, they build from strategy. They know their why. They lead with foresight. They make decisions that align with the long-term vision, not just delivering the short term, You know, and understanding that clarity is not something you wait for.

4:02It's something that you create. So today I'm going to walk you through the things that have helped me genuinely in business. I like to keep it real, as you know, here at Brave Bold Brilliant, you know. So it's about how to move from chaos to clarity in your business using strategic thinking. So you might want to grab a pen and paper to make some notes. That's always helpful. I'm going to share with you three powerful shifts that you can start making immediately to move out of firefighting and really into focused execution. So by the end of this, I want you to walk away with real tools, real questions and real actions that can completely shift how you lead your business this quarter.

4:50So let's get into it. let's start with the first area this is shift number one and this is about going from busyness to bravery you know so let's call it out we often wear busyness like a badge of honor hey listen I guilty as charged I have done this over the years but are you actually being a busy fool and it's a bit of a hard question to ask yourself actually but sometimes when we hold a mirror up and we're really honest with ourselves we can often see that actually we're not being that productive you know you might have a fully booked calendar you know inbox coming in all the time endlessly ticking tasks off you know a very long to-do list and yet you know many of us still feel stuck because busyness and strategy are not the same being busy it can feel productive but it's often a distraction from the real work you know the scary work the big brave decisions that you should be making as a leader you know and strategic thinking it does require us to stop and ask what actually matters here what will move the dial you know what can I let go of am I really clear on my reason why both personally and professionally but for my business for the team that I'm running for the department I'm running because when you're super clear on your purpose and your reason why it's much easier to zoom out and take that strategic view so bravery it's about turning down the noise saying no to things that no longer serve your bigger picture and you know I have been very guilty of this over my career where if you're a good person and you want to do good in the world, you often say yes.

6:46You say yes to everything. But the reality is you need to say no to things because otherwise you can't possibly prioritise. You know, this is about prioritising long-term growth over just short-term applause. And very often when you say yes to everything, you actually end up either overstretching yourself, which causes unnecessary stress for you as well it means that you're not focusing on the right things and delivering for your business your teams your customers and often you end up letting the person down that you're trying to help in the first place because you're overstretched and therefore you can't deliver to the best quality and ability now it does take courage to stop and reflect to admit that you know what you what got you here it may not get you to the next level You know, and that's the first step into clarity.

7:36And this shift that we're talking about, it's especially vital if you're leading a growing business. You know, you have more options, more decisions. You've got more people that are demanding your time. And that's exactly when you need to pause and really ask yourself, what am I saying yes to? Maybe out of habit. What do I need to say no to to really, you know, focus your attention? So today, take an honest look at your calendar. What is taking your energy? Ask yourself, is it actually aligned with your strategic goals? And if not, what do you need to do to bravely remove, you know, delegate or maybe delay?

8:20You know, so I often use the four D's. Super simple, super simple. So what are you going to ditch, first of all? What are you going to maybe delay because it's not a priority right now? What are you going to delegate? And then what are you going to do? OK, so before you get to your to do list, you need to have gone through the other three D's first. You know, and here's a bonus question for you to just consider and sit with. What, ask yourself, what am I avoiding by staying busy? Because often underneath the busyness is some kind of fear. It could be a fear of failure, fear of visibility, fear of making the wrong decision.

9:10But strategic leadership, it's not about being fearless. It's about choosing with courage. You still fear things, but you take the action anyway, but you do it in a calm and absolutely clearly focused way. So that is shift number one that I am encouraging you to embrace and really challenge yourself. Shift number two, then let's get into this. And this is about from being reactive thinking to actually more of a systemized thinking. You know, so when we're overwhelmed, we often operate in reaction. You know, we solve the same problem over and over again. We answer the same questions. We spin multiple plates.

9:54But strategic leaders often operate differently. You know, they step back and they look for patterns. You know, if your team keeps asking the same thing, maybe it's time for a better process because something's not right there. We haven't learned the lesson. If clients are consistently confused, maybe it's time to refine the offer or the way you onboard them. You know, if your energy is drained in the same way each week, maybe it's time to reimagine how you work. And this systemized thinking, it means looking beyond the symptom and solving the root cause. and it means building frameworks that make excellence repeatable you know it's about investing time up front that at the time can seem like an absolute pain and it is just quicker to get on with it but actually that up front thinking and time is going to save you hours headaches and also importantly your energy further down the line so when you move into this mindset You know, your entire business and organisation benefits, your team benefits, you benefit.

11:00You create more consistency, more trust, more autonomy. You empower your team to lead instead of following. You know, and here's the key. Systems don't remove the human element. They support it. You know, it might be that you're actually embracing AI in your business. Fantastic. You should be. You know, that's not about actually destroying jobs. It's about being more efficient, more consistent so that actually the resources that you have, you can deploy them in a more meaningful way that ultimately serves your customers, your clients to give them a better experience, a better product. You know, so systems and processes, they really do create the structure for creativity and leadership to flourish.

11:47So, again, ask yourself, write this question down, ask yourself, what problems am I solving repeatedly that could be solved by a system, a standard operating procedure, a piece of automation or even a better delegation structure? You know, one of the most liberating exercises you can do is really to track everything you do for a week, every decision, every repeated action, and then ask, how can I build a system around this? And that's how you really go from firefighting to freedom. Now, if you are in a business that is scaling and you might be in early stages of growth, you know, you might have started your business and you might be thinking about, OK, I need to get to the next level.

12:29It is much easier to systemise and build really robust processes at the beginning. OK, you might have to tweak over time, but if you do it at the beginning, it's much easier than actually trying to then retrospectively fit things into stuff that has really grown arms and legs over the years, which often happens in my experience. So let's get into the final shift. shift number three and this is about moving from uncertainty to intentional strategy you know and the truth really is uncertainty is always going to be part of the game market shift trends evolve surprises happen and you're crazy if you don't expect that right but clarity it doesn't come from avoiding uncertainty it comes from choosing your strategy anyway strategic thinking means creating a roadmap based on your values, your vision and your goals, even when you can't see the whole path.

13:26You know, in business, we have to be able as leaders to make decisions with incomplete information or with a situation that is changing and moving, especially when a crisis comes up. You know, if I think about the crises that I've had to manage over the years in the travel industry, there have been so many obviously covid is one but much earlier than that in 9-11 ash cloud where we've had hurricanes we've had to evacuate and that situation is changing all the time and you're dealing with a life or death situation in those scenarios let me tell you but having that clarity that calmness being able to see the bigger picture and having a very clear process that you follow where at times like that it makes a massive difference so when you have to deal with ambiguity being a strong leader is about making choices anyway in the face of that ambiguity making decisions with incomplete information um you know and that's really what separates leaders from spectators as a leader it's down to you to make the tough calls you know we don't wait for guarantees you know we choose with intention we commit we refine as we go you know strategy it's not a fixed document it's a living framework that you shape over time and in this fast changing world of business you know your ability to make aligned decisions quickly is more valuable than ever because you know at the end of the day the cost of indecision is often higher than the cost of a mistake right um but if you have that strategic clarity that bigger picture thinking him it allows you to make decisions in the moment that connects you with the bigger picture so you know if you're um if you're you know if you've been feeling unsure maybe you're feeling a little bit stretched you're feeling scattered or stuck you know I just want to remind you you don't need to have every answer that's a mistake I made when I was sort of starting out on my professional career you know I felt that to admit that I didn't have all the answers was a sign of weakness and And of course it's not.

15:33It's a sign of strength because then you actually lean into the people around you. You take advice and counsel. That's where I come in when I work with my clients. You know, I'm there to support them, to help them be the best version of themselves, to help the business get to the next level. You know, so you just need to take one strategic step forward, you know, and start by answering these questions. You know, what is my core business focus for the next 90 days? what are the one to three priorities that align most with that focus what will i say no to so i can go deeper into those priorities freeing yourself up and your teams what do i need to become as a person as a leader to lead this next chapter with more strategy and less stress you know and that is how strategy becomes clarity and how ultimately clarity becomes momentum So let's take a breath together.

16:31Deep breath. You're not here to hustle blindly. You're here to lead bravely. You know, it's about thinking deeply, acting intentionally, you know, strategic thinking. It isn't a luxury. Jeanette shares three powerful shifts: moving from busyness to bravery, adopting systemised thinking over reactive problem-solving, and transitioning from uncertainty to intentional strategy.

Jeannette explains why:

Leaders often confuse being busy with being productive.

It's essential to prioritise long-term growth and make brave decisions that align with strategic goals

Instead of reacting to problems repeatedly, leaders should identify patterns and create systems or processes that address root causes

Uncertainty is a constant in business

Leaders must make decisions based on their values and goals

Taking time to reflect on priorities and decisions is crucial

Leaders should regularly assess what tasks align with their strategic goals
