0:02To know and not to do is not to know. So, if your business isn't growing right now in 2026, I'm going to say something that might feel uncomfortable. But here's the thing, you need to hear it. It's not the market. It's not the economy. and it's not your competitors. It's you and what you're choosing not to see. Now, before you switch off, this isn't about blame. You know, it's really about ownership because the moment you take ownership is the moment that everything can change. And honestly, this actually stands for your professional life, but also your personal life. So, you know, it might sound brutal, but it's coming from a place of actually caring about you.

0:58Okay, so today, what I'm going to do, I'm going to break down some of the real reasons that businesses are stuck right now. And actually, more importantly, what can you actually do about it? Because that's all well and good. You might be saying, well, that's great, Jeanette, you tell me all the reasons why, but actually, how can you help me? So we want to make sure that we balance when we're having conversations like this, that we're actually balancing the understanding of what might be driving a certain situation, but also some practical tips that you can do to actually make a change. Now, for most of you that know me already, you know, I've been in business for over 30 years, at both as a corporate CEO running very large global travel businesses with, you know, hundreds of thousands of people on my team and, you know, huge, huge organizations.

1:52But I also know what it's like to build a business from scratch. I also know what it's like to be a portfolio business owner and an investor, which I am today. And I also have the privilege of working with some of the best known brands in the world, you know including virgin atlantic accor hotels manchester airports group pwc so you know i'm coming at it from an angle of different perspectives but from a lived experience so we're here to help and if you are not following me and brave or brilliant on social media then absolutely let's get connected because we're here to support each other we're building an amazing community of business leaders so that we can support each other in our growth journey.

2:40So go to the website www.brave-bold-brilliant.com and make sure you join the community because then you're going to get notified of all the great things that we're doing, whether it's our podcast, whether it's our YouTube channel where you can follow and subscribe as well. So we're here to help each other. We're here to support. And this comes from a lived experience of reality, not theory. That's what we're all about at Brave Bob Brilliant. So let's get into this. You might want to make some notes as well as you go. So really, you know, the real problem is the lack of clarity. And as I say, after 30 plus years working in business, working with founders, CEOs, scaling companies across different industries, I can absolutely tell you this with certainty.

3:25Most businesses don't fail because they lack opportunity. They fail because they lack clarity. Now, clarity isn't just having an idea. It's knowing exactly where you're going, how you're going to get there, what actually matters and the why. What's the reason behind it all? But before we continue, I want to speak directly to those of you who are listening and thinking, I know I'm capable of more, but I need structure. I need some help. Because here's what I've actually learned after, gosh, more than three decades in business. You know, ambition without clarity creates frustration. And motivation without structure, it really does fade very, very fast.

4:17So that's exactly why we created Rise Academy. You know, and Rise Academy, It's not theory. It isn't fluffy motivation, although you will be motivated. And it certainly isn't another online course that you never finish. It's actually a fully structured growth environment for ambitious entrepreneurs, leaders and founders who absolutely are ready to do all of these things. sharpen their strategy, elevate their leadership, increase revenue with intention, and build businesses that actually support the life that they want. And inside Rise Academy, we focus on the foundations most people skip, leading yourself, leading your teams, and leading the business.

5:01It's about clarity, standards, decision-making, commercial intelligence, and execution. Because scaling, it really isn't about doing more. It's actually about doing the right things and doing the things right consistently. So if you're serious about stepping up into your next level of your leadership, your business life, and not just consuming content, but actually implementing it, then Rise Academy was absolutely built for you. So you can find all the details on our website. Go to www.brave-bold-brilliant.com. And now, let's get back to the show.

5:46What I see regularly is business owners who are incredibly busy, but can be completely misaligned. So it might be that you've got an online business, you're posting constantly, but with no clear message. It might be that you're saying yes to everything, but actually not building anything meaningful. And it can also be that sometimes we're chasing opportunities instead of building a strategy. And the danger here is you can feel really productive, but actually you're not progressing. And that's one of the most dangerous places to be because it feels like you're moving forward. but actually when you really look at it activity without direction it's just noise so you know if you don't have clarity you can't make the right decisions and if you can't make the right decisions you can't grow but even worse than that you might find that you're not making a decision and actually that's even worse because sometimes we have to make decisions in a very very you know short time frame with very limited information.

6:55The world is not perfect. Business does not all happen in a neat little organized way. We know that the world is chaotic. The economic situation, especially right now, is particularly challenging. But as a leader, you have to make a decision. And ultimately, if that decision proves right, great, you move on fast with clarity. If the decision actually isn't the right thing, well, then at least you'll know and you can make a different decision. But you've got to be clear. And also, that means that you give confidence to your team, to your clients, to your customers, to your shareholders, whoever may be the big stakeholder groups that you need to engage with, because clarity gives confidence.

7:38Now, the market has changed, and a lot of people haven't. Most people haven't. But let's talk about the market because yes, things have changed. And actually, it's changing so rapidly, but not always in the way that most people think. Has the market become harder? Maybe at certain times, but it's certainly become sharper. Customers are more aware. There's complete transparency in today's world full of content and information. They've got more options. They make decisions faster than ever before. So we're living in a world where attention is everything. And if you don't grab that attention quickly, you lose it.

8:22And in all honesty, what used to work sort of just being good, just showing up, just having a decent product, that's no longer enough. In 2026, people don't just buy products or services. They buy clarity, they buy confidence, They buy leadership and they buy meaning and with brands that they have an affinity to. And you can only do that if your messaging is clear. If your messaging is vague, however, you lose people. If your positioning is weak, you lose trust. And if your brand doesn't stand for something, you disappear into the noise. And this is where most businesses I see are falling behind.

9:04You know, and they're still operating on outdated thinking in a very modern market. And I just want to touch on the point around the brand, actually, and the brand needing to stand for something. I was lucky enough for our podcast, Brave Bold Brilliant. And if you're not actually subscribed, hit the subscribe button because we are now over 600 episodes. And I have the absolute pleasure and privilege of interviewing the best business leaders all over the world. And I remember a couple of years ago, I interviewed Barbara Muckerman. And Barbara Muckerman at the time was the CEO of Silversea Cruises.

9:43She is now the CEO of Kempinski Hotels. She is a powerhouse of a businesswoman. And, you know, the conversation that Barbara and I had was all about you've got to stand for something. You know, if your brand does not stand for something, then you're just a plain vanilla yogurt. Right. And that means that some people will absolutely be raving fans and other people, you will not be their cup of tea. And that is fine. But we have to have clarity. Another great example from Barbara on why having such clarity with your brand positioning and your purpose and your reason why is absolutely critical in today's world where there's so much noise around.

10:28People need to know what they're going to get, why they should buy from you and how you're different and unique to your competition. So clarity. Now, the three biggest reasons that you're not growing, grab a pen, write these down, because it's going to really help you. And I'm not saying this to be critical. I'm actually saying it to help you. You know, you don't have a clear positioning. That's number one. So let me ask you something. If someone landed on your website, on your page right now, would they instantly understand who you help, what you do and why you're different? Because if they don't, they're gone.

11:03You know, positioning, it's not just branding. We've just talked about the value of a brand, but it's not just branding. It's the foundation of your entire business. You know, and if you're trying to speak to everyone, you're actually speaking to no one. You know, if you're blending in instead of standing out and you're not owning a clear space in the market, then in all honesty, then you're not going to be able to grow. And the strongest businesses I've seen are crystal clear, you know, exactly what they stand for and who they're for. You know, and let me just share with you some words of wisdom that my mentor, Rob Moore, who, you know, he has a large, the largest property education business in the UK, Progressive Property.

11:47He's huge on social media. He's an absolute expert on personal branding, social media, podcasting. and with his podcast is called Disruptors. So check Rob out. But what Rob has drilled into me over the years is the confused mind does not buy. Now, we're not here just to sell, sell, sell. We're here to offer something that adds meaning and is valuable to the client that they are prepared to pay for because we are a business, not a charity. So the confused mind does not buy. You know, if there's too much waffle, then you're going to have a problem in actually resonating with people. So the second reason is you're avoiding the hard decisions.

12:32Now, this is the one that most people don't want to admit. But here's the thing that I've learned over all these years. Growth doesn't come from doing more. It comes from deciding better. and you know if you're holding on to things that no longer serve you or you're holding on to maybe people in your life that no longer really are on the same path as you you might be staying in your comfort zone you could be delaying decisions because they feel uncomfortable and you may be delaying having difficult conversations with people but really deep down when you you know when you're lying there in the middle of the night and you trust your gut you know you need to have these conversations.

13:10And nine times out of 10, in my experience, those difficult conversations don't just go away. They normally get worse up to the point that there's an event, something happens that actually forces the conversation, or there's some kind of explosion or situation that actually, you know, puts you on the back foot. So every time that you're delaying a decision, you're delaying progress, and being decisive as a leader is one of the most important skills that you can have. And the reality is that over time, those delays compound in the same way as forward motion compounds and will take you forward much faster when you actually delay, that has that downward spiral and it can cost you growth, momentum and opportunities.

13:56And in the meantime, it could be that your competition is moving way past you much, much faster. So the most successful people that I've worked with, they aren't the ones who always get it right. I said, you know, we don't always make the right decisions, but they are the ones who decide quickly. They learn quickly and they move forward with absolute clarity and confidence. Now, the third reason why you may not be growing and not being where you want to be is that you're operating without a real plan, you know, and here's the reality. You know, the biggest one I see, there's no real strategy, there's effort, but there's no direction, you know, and I'm a massive believer in what gets measured gets done.

14:36Now, when you have a plan, a business plan, a five-year plan, a clear strategy, you know exactly where you are now, where you're heading, what your mission, your vision is, what your purpose is, your purpose statement, and your strategy is the how. It's the how you're going to get there. And you know what good looks like in terms of your numbers. And you have to be all over your numbers when you're leading a business or you're running a department. But actually, you know, the plan very rarely works out exactly as we anticipate, but it acts as your anchor. It acts as your guiding star because you're able then to assess where were you, you know, maybe over-optimistic with your assumptions, where maybe did you perform better than you thought.

15:18You're able to isolate what are the different levers that are happening in your business, in your market, that has meant you've either overachieved on the plan or underachieved or maybe the shape of the, you know, the plan is different. And that then allows us to get better at forecasting, allows us to have more clarity to the point. And it also means that everyone on the team knows where they're heading, they know what numbers they're looking to achieve. You know, so and the other thing is, when you're launching, maybe you're starting a new business, you might be actually starting a new business right now, or you might be launching a new product to the market.

15:50But when you know, launching things without a clear outcome, that can often be about reacting instead of leading as well. So let me tell you, hope is not a strategy. Guesswork is not a strategy. Every successful business is built on intentional action, not just random effort. And if you don't have a clear plan, you will always feel like you're working hard, but you're getting nowhere. And you may be going backwards actually at certain times as well. So here's the what to do right now. So let's get down to what are the things you can do. You know, so if you're listening to this, you're watching this, you're thinking this is exactly where I am right now.

16:30Well, good. At least you are being honest with yourselves. And that's where it starts. Self-awareness is the first step. So here's what I recommend you do in order to get moving forward. Number one, audit your business honestly, not emotionally, not defensively, honestly. what's actually working, what's draining your time, what is not delivering results. You know, you cannot fix what you refuse to see. I know it sounds obvious, but so often this is a mistake that I see with the businesses that we work with, with the clients we advise. And that's where we help. We get clarity with you so that you know exactly the reality of your scenario.

17:13Step number two, get clear on your direction. If you don't define your direction, the market will define it for you. You've got to know why you exist, what your mission is, and you absolutely need to know who you're serving, what problem you're solving. Why should people choose you over somebody else? And as I say, this is just something that's so, so important. And then the third step that you need to do, make one bold decision today. Not five things, not a complete overhaul, just one decision. Because that one decision made with absolute clarity can completely change your trajectory. And actually, you'll probably find if you ask yourself, what is the one big thing that will shift my business forward?

18:02You will find that actually what hangs off that is a lot of other things that are related to it. But by focusing on the one thing, it might be building your brand. for example. Absolutely, the identity of the business, why you exist, etc. So a lot of what we've talked about might be resolved just by focusing on that one thing, building your brand. Or it might be operational efficiency, or it might be launching in a new market, etc. So really ask yourself, what's the one big thing that you are going to take forward and make a decision on? So let's just summarize this then. I know here's the truth.

18:38Most people will hear this. They'll agree with it. They'll feel motivated for a moment. And then they'll go back to exactly what they were doing before. So, again, another piece of advice from my mentor, Rob Moore, to know and not to do is not to know. All right? To know and not to do is not to know. So there's no point having all this information and self-awareness unless you take massive action, right? Right. But actually start, start. That's what you need to do. So, you know, for the people who are actually taking action, they're the people who get honest, they get clear and they make decisions.

19:21They're the ones who are building businesses that grow and they're doing it right now, even even though the market can be particularly tough. So if you're serious about growing your business in this year, in 2026, and you know you need more clarity, structure and the right guidance around you, that's exactly why we built Rise Academy. If your business has stalled in 2026, the culprit isn't the economy or your competitors—it's likely a lack of clarity and decisive leadership.

In this episode, Jeannette dismantles the "busy-ness" trap that keeps entrepreneurs stuck in neutral. By identifying the three primary growth killers—weak positioning, decision avoidance, and the absence of a strategic plan—Jeannette provides a high-impact roadmap for leaders ready to stop reacting to the market and start leading it.

You’ll Learn Why:

Most businesses fail not from a lack of options, but from a lack of clear direction.

A confused mind never buys, making clear brand positioning the foundation of all revenue.

Every delayed difficult conversation or uncomfortable choice acts as a literal drag on your growth trajectory.

Operating without a measurable five-year plan means you are reacting to the market rather than shaping it.

Focus on one bold, needle-moving decision today rather than a scattered list of minor tasks.

This episode is living proof that no matter where you’re starting from — or what life throws at you — it’s never too late to be brave, bold, and unlock your inner brilliant.
