In short

Dadville hosts a “Starting Dadville with the gals” episode where Dave Barnes and Jon McLaughlin interview their daughters, Zanna Barnes and Liv McLaughlin, in a rapid-fire Q&A. They also discuss school (both are going into sixth grade), favorite foods/drinks, music, family habits, and would-you-rather scenarios.

Key claims

The girls say their dads are funny and early risers; they’re upset about an AI music creator quote claiming making music isn’t fun; they praise specific drink preferences (Liv: peppermint soy mocha latte; Zanna: Jolly Rancher grape).

Notable examples

They reference Quince shopping and “reset before autumn,” a Chicago Shake Shack trip, Starbucks water in Ireland tasting like tap water, and a family “dad jokes” running gag.

Guest backgrounds

Zanna Barnes and Liv McLaughlin are daughters of the hosts (Dave Barnes and Jon McLaughlin), both entering sixth grade, with pets and music interests (including dad’s JM Christmas albums).

0:04Hi, I'm Dave Barnes.

0:07Jon McLaughlin:And I'm Jon McLaughlin. And welcome to Dadville. Dadville is a podcast where we talk about life, love, and the pursuit of awesome dadding. It's funny thoughts and deep talks. So please, enjoy your time here in Dadville and enjoy this episode with... Liv McLaughlin and Zanna Barnes.

0:32Listen, John. Yeah. I just, I have to get this off my chest. Do it. Yes, it's August now, but it's going to get chilly. And this feels like a time. August feels like the time to hit reset before the autumn rush begins. And honestly, I can't think of a better place to start than my closet.

0:47Jon McLaughlin:Dave, same page. That's why I love shopping at Quince. You always say that. Yeah. And here's why. They're all about fewer, better pieces. Made with premium materials, built to last, and designed to become the things that you reach for every day. Like the ultra-soft organic cotton tape in premium Mongolian cashmere sweaters. I wear them all the time, almost every day. They have the fit and quality you'd expect from a luxury designer brand, John. You know, Quince works directly with ethical factories, and they just cut out the middleman. They're like, get out of here. So you're paying for exceptional quality instead of brand markups.

1:25Jon McLaughlin:and keeping everything priced 50 % to 80 % less than similar brands. Quince has hotel quality, bedding, bath essentials, premium cookware, travel gear, and everyday essentials. Upgrade your everyday. Download the Quince app for app-exclusive offers or go to quince.com slash dadville. You get free shipping on your order and 365-day returns. Now available in Canada and the UK, too. That's Q-U-I-N-C-E dot com slash dadville Okay, so we're recording Is that the Beatles? It is You met them? Uh, emotionally He got to talk to Paul Did they die? Two of them have passed, yeah Is it the ones with the non-ball?

2:14Wait, which ones were I know that Paul's alive Who else is alive? Who's Paul? Paul is far left Paul's the one on the left Oh, I'm not sure Oh, I'm happy he's alive. The guy all the way on the right is dead.

2:26Jon McLaughlin:No longer living. Alive. No longer living. Yeah, the guy. Yeah. First and third are still with us. A third? Bro, he's ugly. This guy's just. The just. No, he's very. I like the first guy. Look, I feel like Ringo would be. He'd be up to admitting. Does his hair look better at least? He's probably the least, you know. Look at his outfit. Wait, dad. He's got the least curb appeal. Dad, who was the one who got... Oh, yeah, John. Oh, that's so sad. Why? Why him? He looks the nicest. Crazy person. I feel like we're getting off target. Okay, so here we go. Starting Dadville with the gals, with the ladies.

3:12Would you guys do me a favor? Would you just give a quick intro? Give us your name, what grade you're going into, because we are just about to begin school. It's not started yet. And then favorite color, favorite animal. Okay, so here we go. Xana starts off. Okay, did I say my name? Yes. I already did. As Destiny's Child would want you to do. I'm Dave Barnes' girl child. And I'm growing into sixth grade, and my favorite color is probably ocean blue. Wow. And my favorite animal would be a tiger or a cheetah.

3:53Jon McLaughlin:Tiger or a cheetah? Okay. I thought you were going to say chicken. I know. Or a duck. I like ducks. Can we just pause for a second and say chickens get zero love in that game. I do. I just took care of chickens. We did. And they were actually really cute. So I found recently that there's a chicken that's like really fluffy and pretty. And I don't remember what they're called. but we have some friends here in 12 South who have them and they're like why are we going down the street? wait no no this is the no no Tim and Faith? yes but they're like really pretty fluffy chickens are they the ones with the candy chickens?

4:34luxury chickens what about the poor ones? okay my turn my name is Liv McLaughlin I am father of John who is son of Mimi. Wow.

4:49Jon McLaughlin:Okay. Okay. Wait, what was that? Okay, I'm going into sixth grade and my favorite color is a dark, dark, oh, like that red on the screen. Oh, yeah, not quite crimson. Yeah, sort of. Yeah, I like that. But I like it darker on a car, one of those old cars. Yeah. This is such a, I love how specific it is. And then favorite animal. Bunny. You can say chicken. See, you didn't say chicken. You were just saying chicken. Well, she has. Well, because I like. I have. You have bunnies. What kind of bunnies? Tell everybody. Lion heads. Lion heads, which is the most opposite name for a bunny that you could ever imagine.

5:28She has one bunny named. Yeah, very much so. Very misleading. What does it call? And then Muffin. We love Muffin. Rest in peace, Muffin. R.I.P. Dad.

5:35Jon McLaughlin:What? I'm saying. He's still with us. He's still with us, but it was our first experience with losing a pet. Me? He was really scared. Wait, wait, wait. Who? Yeah, what was his name? Muffin. Muffin. That's what I said. Hey, hey, hey. We have a dog named Lolly. Oh, I took care of him. A fish named Bubbles. And two brothers who might as well be dogs. And two monkeys named Ben and Sammy. There we go. That's good. You did that well. And a mom named Annie. And a cat named Otis. And a gorilla named Dad. There we go. I also have a screen major Named Luca Guys can I just say And I'm being honest here I'm really excited about this episode Me too You guys are going to be interviewing us Yeah we are Because we're just Consummate podcasters We also have questions It would be sad if you didn't have questions You didn't get to know us They know you but they don't know us Yeah, yeah.

6:41Okay, what's your first question? Yeah, let's kick it off. I'm ready. No, I'm going first. Okay, fine. Do we do five or one question each? One each. Okay. Who was your favorite person to interview? Favorite person to interview. Interview. Sorry, I had to burp.

6:58Jon McLaughlin:The present company excluded. Yeah, I was going to say y 'all. Or the moms. No. We can't say that? No. You have to say like somebody who could get married. Like Obama. Oh bombs You know who This is tricky because each of them Have like a category Like there's ones that we laugh the most with Ones we're like oh my gosh I'm gonna say Tony Hale Yeah Tony was great Is that the Archibald guy Yes Archibald He was the first Here's why I'm saying it It's tough to pick a favorite But he was the first interview where I felt totally comfortable because it was super early on where we first had him. It was the first time where I was like, okay.

7:48I would do Matthew McConaughey. She tapped out. Nate Bargatze. Both of those were amazing. I would say the hard... I'm going to honor my first thought. Obviously those two were great. I think the one that I laughed the most was probably Leanne Morgan. I legitimately sweat laughed. I met Jelly Roll too. Dad, you need to put Jelly Roll on it because he's so nice. I met Obama. I want to meet Matthew McConaughey. We're tight. Let's get that out. Okay, guys, good question. Yeah, good question. Liv, you. Liv, you're up. Oh, John, both of you. The thing in North Carolina. Oh, the thing about the guy who made...

8:30The thing in North Carolina. I'm about to explain. The guy who said that making a song isn't fun. Oh, AI.

8:44Jon McLaughlin:Oh. What are our thoughts on that? Yes. How mad are you? AI. I'm very mad. Yes. I think it was outrageous. Can you tell people the quote? I mean, I don't remember the exact quote, but this is pretty close. it's the guy who invented Suno AI or whatever like makes music he said it's no longer fun it's not fun to get good at music well it's not fun to make stuff to do for you guys that got me so enraged it's the equivalent of someone parking in front of your driveway those two things mom got really mad when somebody parked in front of our house. It's called like, it's called She wrote papers that was like, that is not cool in all caps and like, she put it on the car and then the sweet, my mom was taking me and the sweet college girl came up to our house.

9:45Who had to deal with it after it happened? Dad had to, the gorilla had to deal with it and he, the gorilla, the sweet gorilla who doesn't like confrontation. um, why is there papers on my, um, car that say, um, No, because the car was gone. where's my car? She was like, I don't even know papers are on my car. Because my car is not there. And dad was just like, oh, um. I was like, talk to my wife. He's like, who put that driveway there? Yep. Oh my gosh. Okay, Boo Boo, what you got? Okay. Who is your favorite child? You better say me. Zana. Thank you. Yep. John. Libby. We all know it's Luca. Oh, wow.

10:25Shots fired. Okay. We all know it's her. We all know. We all know. Okay. Oh, Lena holds the key.

10:33Jon McLaughlin:Lena knows? How does Lena know? I have so many questions. Alright, Levy, what's your next question? Who is someone you want to interview? Let's say at the same time. One, two, three. One, two, three. Harry Connick Jr. Harry Connick. Who's Harry Connick? I actually really want to interview I changed my answer to Martin Short. I want to interview Simone Biles. Yes. She was awesome. But you know what? Did you interview her? No, but we had Sean Johnson on who was the Simone Biles 10 years before Simone Biles. Were they on the same team? I don't know that they ever heard her. You need to interview the guy that's like, there's a guy that's on the bars and he's like, 32, steps up to the plate and goes.

11:26Yeah, yeah, yeah. I love that one. That's a good one. We love that joke. Okay, good. Next question. You guys are moving. I'm proud of y 'all. Dana, what you got? I was frightened. I just burped through my nose. Oh, it's my turn. No, it's my turn. See, she's trying to do it again.

11:43Jon McLaughlin:Oh, sorry. I thought it was Dana's turn. Go ahead. Yeah. What is your favorite Jolly Rancher flavor? Grape without hesitation. Last time I had a Jolly Rancher, I think it was 1997. What was good then, John? Watermelon? My teeth could actually handle it. Blue watermelon. Dad loves grape. My teeth can't handle it. Yeah. No. My teeth can't handle it. Do you have Invisalign? Yeah, I do, but I took it out. Oh. Because I shave my asses like this. Yeah. Hey, guys. Having a good time? Hey. My favorite flavors. Mango. Dad, you like grape. Love grape. Ew. I love the blue raspberry and the grape. Okay. The grape's really sour.

12:27The grape tastes like medicine.

12:28Jon McLaughlin:flavor like banana. It doesn't actually taste anything like the thing. It's just a fruit. You can't put it into stuff like, you can't only medicine and then that will ruin everything. Dad, during church you get like, Dad, Dad, during church you get a pocket full of Jolly Ranchers and you just unwrap them. There were some Sundays where I did sort of load up on Jolly Ranchers. Recently, are we talking? This is two weeks ago? Potentially. They're so noisy, though. They are. You have to really, during the hem. Saturday night, you've got to unwrap those. I was going to say, during the hem, I pre-unwrap.

13:09And then I have them sort of ready to go so I can just grab and go. They go quick, though, by the way. You were like crackling. I did that, too. It sounded like this. They have them up in the room. And I went up and I got orange juice, Jolly Rancher, and a journal. And I was ready. You were ready. Okay, next. What's your favorite drink at Starbucks? Oh man When was the last time You You walked into a Starbucks You graced a Starbucks with your presence

13:40Jon McLaughlin:I go to Starbucks He took us last Yeah that's right My daughters love Starbucks I think it's I would say my daughter loves Starbucks Absolutely terrible coffee The Ireland Okay guys If you live in Ireland I'm sorry The Starbucks there is so bad The flavors were a little different We went to Starbucks in Ireland The cold foam tasted like cardboard And if you work at Starbucks in Ireland This is not your fault Yeah this is right Tell them Zanna This is great podcasting by the way Immediately put an asterisk It's just Maybe look for a different job and we need new workers. I'm going to say my favorite drink at Starbucks, no joke, is their water.

14:31Jon McLaughlin:They have the best water. Are you being serious? They have good water. See, in that sack, they're halfway to good coffee. No, it's not. They have great water. That's most of what coffee is. And then you just need to add... The water they gave us in Ireland was not good. It tasted like tap water. Can I tell you what my favorite drink is? John, I need you to just hum and close your ears because you're going to lose any respect you have for me. It's the peppermint soy mocha latte. I know. Now, do you get that year-round or is that a seasonal? No, that's like a... It's seasonal. I don't really go to Starbucks, but when I have that craving for that drink, I'll go get it.

15:09And I have to say, to further shame myself, I have to say this, no whip because it comes with whip. That's the kind of drink I'm drinking. I like the strawberry acai drink with no strawberries. I like the strawberry acai. No strawberries. No inclusions? My sister gets screening. Okay, next. So many YouTubers are like, I want this with this with extra this and extra that and then this and this and this and then extra, extra, extra that and then a little bit of this, a little bit of that and then a lot more of this. Michelle Branch once talked about a little bit of this and a little bit of that with Santana's help.

15:52Listen, John, I have to get this off my chest. Do it. Yes, it's August now, but it's going to get chilly. And this feels like a time. August feels like the time to hit reset before the autumn rush begins. And honestly, I can't think of a better place to start than my closet.

That's Q-U-I-N-C-E dot com slash dadbill. There was, I was at Starbucks. Is this U.S. or Ireland? U.S.A. In by Whole Foods. Well, I asked for something. It was like, I don't know what it was. It was a while back. And then he was like, oh, is that like a TikTok drink? And I was like, no, it's on your menu.

17:41Boom. Boom. It was on their menu. That is a class one roast. That is a roast. When we were in Boston, the chocolate croissants were a lot better than in Nashville. Did you like it? Where would you say the best chocolate croissants we've had are? Boston. And then, this is nice. I don't know. Where did Sam like them the most? Nashville. Every day he ate them on this trip. Do you remember? Oh, Colorado. Nope. I love your energy. Colorado. I thought it was. Hey, Pally. Hey. You said it right. You said it right. She just said Colorado right. Oh, you didn't say Colorado. You didn't say Colorado. I noticed.

18:20Or what's the other one? Branskanskitzko. Branskanskitzko. That's a tough one. I say Francisco because of Francisco. Hello there. Francisco. If you know him, buddy. Sammy. Will Ferrell. You guys should interview Will Ferrell. Oh my gosh, I love him. Done and done. All right, Livy, what's our next question? Okay.

18:41Do you think Michael Jackson is still alive? Wow Because some people like YouTubers We're covering the gamma here Do we actually know if he's still alive?

18:49Jon McLaughlin:He's alive in my heart He was spotted in I think his streaming numbers are very much alive These days His memory is very alive Wait, can I have that? Guys Zana, do you have any more questions? Because we have some questions for you Yeah, we've got some questions for you Yes, I do I have a lot more If you went back to my... Oh, wait, no. What's your favorite song you've wrote and why?

19:13Take me home. Take me home. John, I want to hear yours first. Dad, there's no one we just wrote. It's obviously still my girl. Guys, I have an announcement. So one quick podcasting thing is once you ask the question, you wait for the answer. And that's what we're learning how to do right now. John, answer that question. That's podcasting 101. Yes, ma 'am.

19:33Jon McLaughlin:If I had to pick one It'd probably be Indiana Oh John Brother Dad After you answer I need to say something I don't I mean Should I play it? Okay I'll do it Guys Hey don't make me sing Guys don't make me sing Here Libby I just want to once again Shout out that song It is It is It is one of my favorite songs Of all time Oh And it also makes my probably like top 20 to 30 most envied songs I wish I'd written list. Really? And this is of anybody. This isn't Dave's Friends. That is a phenomenal song. I am honored. You know what mine is of yours on that list. Dreaming in electric blue. I love that song, but my song of yours is Nothing Fancy.

20:27Jon McLaughlin:Oh, yeah. Nothing fancy. If I could pick one of your songs That I have written it would be that one We need to do a night of all of our friends Picking each other's songs And playing them We should do a bluebird night That would be so much fun Let's do it Oh dude okay Listeners hold us to it Remember So me and Sammy Sammy and I We Dad you made a song called Christmas Time. Christmas Time. And me and Sammy are starring in that song. But we're singing in the background. Sam and Santa became the choir. It's coming out in like 2027 or something. So we all will have to wait. And they stuck the landing.

21:15I can't wait. Wow, my dad has never done something like that for me. Nice. Liv, if you were in town we were going to probably have you come sing too. Christmas time. That's what I'm armed. I was like, Christmas. And then of course you have Bing and somebody's like, Dad, why didn't you ask me to sing in the children's choir? I was like, yeah. We're going to miss that window.

Read the full transcript

21:34Jon McLaughlin:You could intern for the children's choir now. Wait, whose turn is it? Oh, yeah, it's limits. Wait, your dad hasn't answered the question yet. Oh, of mine? I still think it's probably Grace's Amazing Hands. And I think maybe like Indiana because it was such an early song. It just holds a really special song. I like Dreamin' on Electric Blue because it's so hype. Because it's like Florida. That is one of my favorite songs. Grace's Amazing Hands. It's Florida on the golf cart. Yeah. Yeah. We should do that again. Why don't we do that? I don't know. Wait, what are we doing? We would, the clock that you guys had, and we would always wake up at like six, and then we would have to wait for an hour, and then when it turns out, we'd be like, yes.

22:11Wait, what are we talking about? Our Florida trip. Oh, yeah. Okay, can we ask you guys? Wait, what are we all doing on fall break? Fall break? Go to the beach again. We go to Florida. with Leo and Nash. That's fun. It's fun.

22:31Jon McLaughlin:We'll discuss off mic for that one. That's really convincing. It's fun. It's fun. It is. Guys, I have a question for you guys. No yelling. We make AI songs. Sorry. Oh, dear. Oh, dear. Ben does AI rapping. Oh, yeah. It was like, it was like. It's like boom, boom, boom, boom. My name is Ben. No, no, no. It was like, it was like, it was like, drop it like it's hot. I know that Snoop Dogg, but he did an AI version. AI's not that tough. It's like, I have a dog and he's like to fall. Okay, we have questions for y 'all. Are you guys ready? Yes, we are. We are very ready. We've been ready. We'll start with Zanna and then Liv, I want you to answer this.

23:11Jon McLaughlin:Bro, why am I always second? Zanna, describe your dad in three words. Funny. Oh, wait. I probably should. The king of the house and nice. Funny. Funny, funny, and nice. King of the house and nice. Well, you're the one who... I don't know how to say that. You're the... No, we'll take it. Okay, I know what to do. I will say early bird because you're early. You wake up early for some reason. Hey, the body's not going to stretch out. I'm at the beach trip. Look. Hey, and I will say, not to interrupt you, Libby, but you also are an early bird. Damn. I think we have that in common. Yeah. Yeah. My twin.

24:02Jon McLaughlin:Santa woke up at 8.45 this morning. No, no. Wait. Shut up. Me too. I woke up at 8.45. Like 8.45. Okay, so early. You're gone. Hold on. Early riser.

24:17Coffee. Okay. That is good. And Iron Man. Oh, those are good, John. We'll take it. If there was four, I would say funny. But everyone knows that, so I'll just say those. Yeah, that is really good, John. I love these. Dad off Dadville is probably a lot more funny than that. Is it Father's Day? Off Mike is what that meant. Okay, what's one of your favorite things about your dad, Livvy, you start?

24:55Wait, but I already said it I said them Oh, wait Your favorite thing is that I get up early? No That's like annoying

25:14Money maker Oh Hey, that's just a man who provides is what that is. Starbucks isn't free. That is a guy who flies to Seattle, drives an hour. That's right. I would probably say, like, whenever, like, somebody's sad or, like, just needs a laugh, you make us laugh. But if we ask you to make us laugh, you don't. Like, you're really bad at doing it. Yeah, that's a skill. Me and Sammy were like, Dad, try to make us laugh. And the whole day, you were just trying to make funny jokes that did not make any sense. Dad jokes. Am I right, people?

25:51Jon McLaughlin:Am I right? It has to come naturally. Thank you, Liv. Gotta be organic. Dad, you're not, you need to be more funny. I've got to, I'll tell my writers. Jeez. Okay, what about, oh, do you each have a favorite memory? Yes, I do. Okay, go, Liv. We were in Chicago going on the plane. I knew you were going to say that. Then we came out of the plane and we were running to Shake Shack. And it was so good. It was like, okay, don't interrupt. Sorry, go ahead. It was like small because we couldn't like open our mouths because we were like waking up early that day. And then we were on the plane, obviously.

26:43and then it was like you could see the grease coming out and then I had like I think I had a dog did I have a milkshake?

26:53Jon McLaughlin:I don't remember I don't know and then I just took a bite and it was like everything you had hoped it would be this was a daddy daughter trip to Chicago and Liddy is a vegetarian but she made an exception no no no no I wasn't vegetarian then You were dabbling in vegetarianism You were flirting Dad I don't know what to say I think I was That wasn't my

27:24I don't know what to say Is it because I'm not around

27:36Jon McLaughlin:It's tough Because there's so many I like when we're walking and you're just like, you make funny, you're like, sup, Sheila, and you don't even know that her name is Sheila. You just are like, yo, Joe, how you doing, brat? Sometimes it's fun to yell at people that you don't know what you think their name is. Sometimes I pretend that I speak another language. Like on Marathon Day. Marathon Day is the highlight of that. Guys, I pretend that I speak, I'll just say random Duolingo stuff and I'll be like, Oh, chante. Mon ami, je m 'appelle Croissant. Your name is Croissant? Yeah. That's what Duolingo teaches you.

28:21It'll teach you chevelle, which is horse.

28:25Jon McLaughlin:Okay, guys, I've got a question for you. Horse. La mini-mole. Dig deep on this one, okay? Okay. What is the hardest thing about being an 11 year old or a 12 year old? I guess it's like I miss being like younger because it's more fun to have like everybody's like oh you're so cute and like now when you're older you're just like oh you're so pretty but you're not very cute okay I don't know why I just said that I don't either but I love that as an answer maybe just like I've got my life unloaded Being the oldest is like a big opportunity in our school because like sixth grade is where it ends. I'm the youngest.

29:13You guys rule the school. So like it's like there's so many more opportunities and like there's so many more like big commitments you have to make.

29:24Jon McLaughlin:Yeah. And you have to get your finger pricked, which I'm not excited for. What? Nobody wants that. Dr. McClendon, if you're listening, please don't hurt my finger. That was funny. All right, lady. Okay, I have mine. So I like to save my money. Yeah. You are a big save. What was the question? I'm not sure at this point, honestly. I'm forgetting. The question is, what's the hardest thing about being 11 and 12? Yeah. But, so I like, what if I started speaking in a British accent? You're welcome to. I'll do it. You're welcome to. I'm actually pretty good. Okay. the whole okay wait what was the hardest thing about being oh yeah so I'm a saver and and I when I was younger I would not have to spend my money on stuff and my parents would spend my the money for me oh my gosh that's so true even if I just want to get some fries or something or a Starbucks if you want to use your money and I'm like does it look like I want to use my money?

30:36No. If I was like... When I'm younger, when you're younger, you get all the attention and everything's on you. The parents are like, and now the parents are like, do whatever you want, we don't care. Unless the youngest is older. And Sammy always gets the attention because he's the youngest. And me and Ben are so annoyed. Hey, let's do another question. Favorite song by your dad? Oh. Wait, what? What's your favorite song? I thought that was easy.

31:13So close.

31:15Jon McLaughlin:Is that your favorite? No. Dad, I would probably say, I don't know. I don't have one, actually. I have one. What is it? Oh, oh. Christmas saved us. Okay. Got those Christmas albums. The JM Christmas albums are famous. I'm excited for the new one that's going to come out. Well, because whenever you hear that song, you play it during Christmas, and those are the good times. Yeah. These are the good times. Oh, you should get Justin, the guy who plays Branch. Timberlake. He would be a good kid. He's a little busy. Did he go to prison? Justin Timberlake? Yeah. I don't think so. Is he a dad? I thought that he was a drunk driver.

32:01He asked if he was in prison. Oh, yeah, he may have gotten... We should get Justin Bieber and Hailey Bieber. Okay, let's ask a couple more questions, gals. Y 'all ready? Justin Timberlake. You guys are doing great. Boo-boo, pull your mic up. There we go. Okay, what's one sentence that your dad says so often that everyone in the family can say it with him? Do y 'all have one?

32:24Jon McLaughlin:That's a good question. Oh, I know mine, I know mine. But first, you know what I have to do? Gotta do the dishwasher. Oh, that's good. Santa, what's ours? Santa, pull that mic. Yeah, why don't we leave the mic? There we go. Nope.

32:46Probably, like, take your dog out. Or walk Lolly. Or you can't watch.

33:01So you take Lolly out. And Lolly's a mini Bernaduble. Just if anybody needs to know. I think mini Bernadubles are the best dogs. No. I'll just yell that now. I have another one too. Dad, you would just say dad jokes. Yeah. Animal jokes. Okay, here's where we're going to do this next. And if I say something, you say burn when it's not a burn. Oh, no, you'll go burn. Okay. Okay, but you'll be holding cookie and be like, here's the cookie monster. That's a go-to. Okay.

33:41John, to improve your sleep, it's not complicated. No, it's simple.

33:45Jon McLaughlin:People just need better sheets on their bed. Exactly. You know what? That's why we upgraded to Bowl and Branch. And it's amazing how quickly we notice a difference. Dave, literally overnight. Just to be clear, not me and you, us and our wives. Oh, I don't know. I was sleeping so deep, I didn't know who was in that bed. Listen, John, they make everything, too. Not just sheets. It's organic cotton sheets, pillows, blankets, comforters. It's all designed to be super soft, breathable, and actually work together. And the sheets actually get softer over time. 34:41Listen, John. Yeah. I just have to get this off my chest. Do it. Yes, it's August now, but it's going to get chilly. And this feels like a time. August feels like the time. Yeah. To hit reset. before the autumn rush begins. And honestly, I can't think of a better place to start than my closet.

That's quince.com slash dadville. Okay, here we go. We're going to do a little, this is going to be, y 'all have to point at each one of us and say which one these apply to. This is a speed round. Oh, I remember this. This is a speed round. Which dad between me and John is most likely to cry during a movie?

36:24Dad, you were crying during Inside Out 3. Oh, wait. Oh, I mean, of course. Wait, 2. No.

36:30Jon McLaughlin:It hasn't even come out yet and I'm crying. Do you cry in movies, John? Oh, yeah. I do too. Okay. What about this one? For the listener, our respective children pointed straight at us. Yeah, each one. Yeah. What about Get Lost Driving? Yeah, that's. Diddy got lost driving us to the hills. Well, now you see where I got it from. He got lost. He drove past. Why would you say that? He drove past the Jersey Mike's over. Diddy? That's what we call Granddaddy. Yeah, not P. Diddy. And he drove us past the mall and stuff. Let's just take the volume down. He was supposed to take it. Okay, let me look to your grandparents' name.

37:13I was so confused. I called them, Luca called them Bana and Pata. And the other ones are maybe Papa. Talking about grandparents. Yeah. Pata and Papa. Bana and Pata. What about accidentally text the wrong person? Which one? Jeez, a lot of points. Okay. That's Dave. That's me. I just don't know. Forget why he walked into a room. That would have raised me. I got two votes. God, these, Dad, these are all winning. My dad's normal. You forget what you're looking for. Last one. Last one. Wear the same shirt three days in a row. Oh, my dad. He hasn't changed. Oh, dad, dad, dad, dad, dad. Like sometimes you call mom in the grocery store and you're like, which bread am I looking at?

37:54Or where's the basil? And she's like right next to the sauces. And you're just like, I can't find that. Oh, here it is. My mother had a phrase she used to tell me all the time that she said, if it was a snake, it would have bitten you. Because I could never find it. And always with basil. That doesn't make any sense. Oh, just with basil. Yeah. Yeah. She had other phrases for other herbs, but basil was a snake. Let me guess. A snake. I bet cucumber was, if you see it, buy it. I feel. It's not funny. I know. Because cucumbers aren't funny. So I feel like we've come to the end. Do you guys want to add any last thoughts?

38:33We're going to the end? Yeah. We're not even doing Would You Rathers? Well, let's do. Oh, I forgot. Do you want to end with a couple Would You Rathers? Let's do a couple. I wasn't even done with this. How long do you think you will continue music? Four. This is fast. Come on. Four. As long as people will let us. What about you? Okay. If you could bring back any dead person who made it pop culture history, who would it be? Fast. Three, two, one. John Linus. Love that. Cosine. Okay. If you went back. Oh, wait. No, I did that. No, wait. If you went back to when you were little, what would you change and why?

39:10Jon McLaughlin:Jeez. I feel like I would invest in Apple earlier when you are not doing music and this is what take your time if you're not doing music or doing dadville what do you do in your free time this feels like you're really asking us Iron Man it's not even written down she's like what do you do Perfect. I want people to know. Should we answer for each other? I would say with you, you are watching an English Premier League soccer game. Yes, that's so true. While texting. Specifically Arsenal. Specifically Arsenal, yeah. And then you're training and looking buff while I'm sitting watching. Or he's watching tennis.

39:59If you would change lives with somebody that you know for a day, who would it be? Why? Xana Barnes. Okay. Because I'd get to experience me. I'd also say Xana Barnes. Okay. Okay. That's your favorite color.

40:14Jon McLaughlin:Then I can hang with Liv McLaughlin. But then I wouldn't hang out with you. Oh, burn. Burn. I would hang out with you because Xana would be in your body. She would sniff you out, John. She'd be like, you're not acting like Xana. I'd just not be in any bodies. So like John would be standing like this and he would just be dead. Guys, can I just say this is hands down the most energetic interview we've ever done. He almost spilled his coffee. Okay. I love the energy. I have one. I have one. I have one. What was your favorite band in the 80s? Michael Jackson. Favorite what now? The Beatles. The band in the 80s is tricky.

40:54Two of them are still alive. Favorite band in the 80s?

40:57Jon McLaughlin:Probably Michael Jackson. It would have been like Billy Joel or Elton John. Isn't it like the smoke? Okay. Hey, let's do this. Here we go. Each of you get two would you rather's and then we call this thing. Zanna, go first.

41:18Would you rather go back to when we were babies or rewind to when we get older and you become grandparents?

41:25Jon McLaughlin:That's a good question. I would definitely go. Is this like for a day? If this is for a day, I would go back to when you were a baby. I agree. I agree. I would love to hold little Xana boo-boo Little tiny Xana You were a chunky monkey I was a chunk monster Okay, Liv, what's yours? So would you rather go to Europe or Australia? You better say what I want you to say Oh, I know what you're going to say easy I mean, Australia Oh my gosh, what? I love Australia I've never been, but I want to go We love Australia Yeah, and Europe is way better Xana, what do you got? Stop, let's talk up Okay

42:05Would you rather be a dentist or a doctor? Dentist Dentist all day

42:11Jon McLaughlin:I don't want to deal with all that blood I need to heal some inner trauma Around that Like when somebody gets zapped You can faint Like the word zapped You can be like Yeah Totally What? Okay last question Would you rather Would you This is like Pressure's on It all comes down to this Stay in Would you rather go back to the 1800s? Okay. Or would you go to the future 70? 20? 70? Yeah. Oh, there would be mansions everywhere. No little houses. There would be like... The temptation for me is the back to the future ruse. I know everything I know. But it would be so uncomfortable. Everything would be uncomfortable.

43:09Jon McLaughlin:You know, it reminds me of that Nate Bargatze bit. Yes. Where he goes back in time and he's like, yeah, we've got satellites now. He doesn't know how to do anything. He doesn't know how to do anything. I would, if I could push a button and immediately come back to present day, I would go into the future. Yeah, me too. Because I would be curious to see what it looks like. story real quick i would go on your path so we um we were in paris and we went back we were in for um like two days went to paris for like a few days and then we went back to london yeah we took the train it was like an hour it wasn't bad and um on the way back on the train there's two little girls that were like english and they were so cute off topic with their little And then next we went to an Airbnb.

43:59And what happened was the night we went to Back to the Future as the musical, and we were eating kettle popcorn or whatever, and I got really sick in London, and it was really bad. You got sick in London? Yeah. London's like the worst place ever. It was the worst place ever. Yeah, it was a bummer. Yeah, it was rough. We were nervous we were going to miss the flight. She was so sick. Really? But then we prayed a lot, and God was kind. But look at you now.

44:27Jon McLaughlin:You're stronger than ever. Guys, what a tour de force. Oh, my goodness. What a showing. You had so many more questions. You had drawings you were going to present to us, and each of you prepared a song about us that you loved. Yeah, I literally, we had like a whole concert outside. Guys, can I just say, though? Never mind. We love being your dads. You guys are awesome. Thanks for interviewing us. Instagram. Can we go out with this? Will each of you just give the listeners a little piece of encouragement or a thought as we sign off? What is it? Here we go. What's your message? What's your message to the listeners?

45:06Besides go to our concerts and buy our merchandise. Go to dad's Christmas concert where I will be singing there. Oof, okay. I won't, but I just want to say that. when I become nice and famous. Me too. You can't be both. Keep going.

45:25Jon McLaughlin:It's the rules. I love that you said nice and famous and not rich and famous. No, I meant to say nice. No, no, no. You meant nice. Famous and furs money, by the way. No, I meant to say when I'm really famous. Okay. Go on. Sure, I'll be. I'm going to be nice. Don't worry. Just know I am nice and you should probably listen to me and cast me in the movies because I am nice. I would love... Yeah, and also stay in school. Me too. Stay in school. And also, I would... No, sad. Dad, stop, stop, stop. And I would also love to... Should we fade out? If people love me...

46:07I heard that. Okay, that feels... I feel like it's good. Listen, we love y 'all. I would love for people to come up to me and be like, hey, Santa Barbara. And we're done. That's the end of it. Take phonos with me. Phonos? Thank y 'all, we love you Bye Bye

We’ve officially lost control of the microphones. Welcome to a special episode of Dadville—or as our daughters Zanna and Liv have rebranded it, Kidville. We thought we were the consummate podcasters, but the girls immediately put us in the hot seat to expose our deepest, most embarrassing secrets.

We're talking about Dave pre-unwrapping a pocketful of Jolly Ranchers during church hymns so they don’t crackle, and our classic grocery store panic calls because we can't find the basil. Nothing was safe—from Ringo Starr’s lack of outfit "curb appeal" to the time Ireland's Starbucks cold foam tasted exactly like cardboard. They even recap Liv's legendary Shake Shack sprint in Chicago and grill us on our favorite child.

Please listen to this chaotic takeover, buy their upcoming merchandise, and cast Zanna in a movie because she's officially "nice and famous"!
