Earn Your Leisure Podcast Episode Summary

Episode Title

DEION SANDERS ON TEAMS GETTING PAID TO LOSE

Overview In this episode of the *Earn Your Leisure* podcast, hosts Rashad Bilal and Troy Millings welcome Deion Sanders, the head coach of Jackson State University football. They delve into the economics of college football, the challenges faced by Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and the implications of conference expansions and "money games." Sanders shares candid insights on how smaller programs are financially disadvantaged in the current college football landscape.

Key Topics Discussed

  1. Economics of College Football
  2. Money Games: Sanders discusses the controversial practice where smaller colleges are paid to compete against larger, more established programs, often resulting in significant financial losses for the smaller teams.
  3. Example: A hypothetical game against Alabama where a school might receive $590,000 but incurs expenses upwards of $700,000 to $1 million for travel and accommodations.
  1. Conference Expansion
  2. Sanders expresses his hope for Jackson State moving to a power conference, but emphasizes the need for proper preparation and resources.
  3. Discussion on the necessity of strengthening the team, particularly in the trenches (offensive and defensive lines), to compete at higher levels.
  1. Financial Disparities
  2. The conversation highlights disparities in funding between HBCUs and larger state schools.
  3. Sanders stresses the importance of demanding adequate funding for HBCUs, pointing out that acceptance of insufficient funds perpetuates systemic inequalities.
  1. Facilities and Resources
  2. Sanders discusses the lack of facilities and resources at HBCUs compared to their larger counterparts and the need for improvement to attract better recruits and compete effectively.
  3. Emphasizes that success in sports leads to greater financial investment in the institution.
  1. Personal Responsibility and Advocacy
  2. Sanders shares his commitment to advocating for his players and the school’s needs, highlighting his proactive approach to securing necessary facilities and support.
  3. He reflects on his personal experiences and the lessons learned throughout his career that prepared him for his current role.

Key Takeaways

  • Economic Realities: The payments for "money games" often do not equate to the expenses incurred, leading to a cycle of financial strain for smaller programs.
  • Need for Change: There's a pressing need for HBCUs to advocate for better funding and resources to level the playing field.
  • Strategic Growth: For programs like Jackson State to ascend to higher conferences, they need strategic planning, investment, and development in all aspects of the program.
  • Community Impact: The challenges faced by HBCUs extend beyond sports; they affect enrollment, funding, and overall institutional health, underscoring the importance of community support and activism.

Conclusion This episode with Deion Sanders serves as an insightful look into the complexities of college football economics, particularly regarding HBCUs. It emphasizes the need for systemic change in funding and resources, and the importance of advocating for equity in sports and education.

1:57podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. This is Dr. Jesse Mills, host of the Mailroom Podcast. Each January, men promise to get stronger, work harder, and fix what's broken. But what if the real work isn't physical at all? I sat down with psychologist Dr. Steve Poulter to unpack shame, anxiety, and the emotional pain men were never taught how to name. Part of the way through the valley of despair is realizing this has happened, and you have to make a choice whether you're going to stay in it or move forward. Our two-part conversation is available now. Listen to the mailroom on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your favorite shows.

2:34This episode is brought to you by PNC Bank. A lot of people think podcasts about work are boring. And sure, they definitely can be. But understanding a professional's routine shows us how they achieve their success little by little, day after day. It's like banking with PNC Bank. It might seem boring to save, plan, and make calculated decisions with your bank. but keeping your money boring is what helps you live a more happily fulfilled life. PNC Bank, brilliantly boring since 1865. Brilliantly boring since 1865 is a service mark of the PNC Financial Service Group, Inc. PNC Bank, National Association, member FDIC.

3:16Let me ask you this. As far as the conferences, we see some things that make absolutely no sense when conferences, like schools on the west coast and the big east and big 10 has 13 schools it's because they're getting paid yeah so but i say that to say it's all it's all everything is derived around football and the conferences is just going crazy no they ain't they're going money they're going business so i say that to say is there ever any way possible that you foresee jackson state being in a power conference at some point in time i would like to see that when we're ready We got to be ready.

3:52Now, when you start jumping conferences, and I don't want to just jump to no baby conference. If I'm going to jump, let's bungee jump. Let's do the doggone thing, okay? So I got to get the Travises. I got to get Travises there too, okay, up front on both sides, offenses, defensive line, with some depth because that's how the big boys can get you now. They can't mess with you in a skill position because we got a quarterback that can spin it. We got receivers that can go. DBs that can go, linebackers that can bang and cover, where they get you is right here in the trenches. Now when they rotate, they rotate.

4:28They got eight heat seeking missiles coming. And you may have four. So sooner later you're going to wear down. So you got to beef that up if you want to compete with the big boys. But you would like that. Or be open to it. I want that. What conference would you want to be in? It don't matter. A conference that is going to make sure that we don't have a struggle no more. Because everything is a struggle. Everything is not enough. Everything is less than. Everything is like thereof. It's going to be a conference that can put the whole school on, that we straight. SEC would be big. It could be Big 12, too.

5:12SEC is the biggest. This is the biggest. When you start talking like that, you got to answer where the house is. So you got stadiums? You got to have all the facilities? Ain't nobody. Come on, man. I want to get to the facilities. I want to talk. It's easy coming here like this. You said playing the big boys. And I know one of the things you touched on recently was the money games. True. And the disparities in that. Can you elaborate and explain to people? Because when we see, let's pick a random school. Let's say you guys play Alabama. No, no, no. You just saw Alabama State play against UCLA.

5:49Right. Okay. Big dog. I don't mind that. But tell the kids what it is. I'm playing for money. I'm playing so that we can pay for this, pay for this. Don't act like you got a chance because you know you don't. And then if you plan for money, do real business. So you get 500 ,000 or 590 ,000, whatever was reported. Won't you call and check and see how much a charter flight is, two charters? Because you got one for the team and one for the band. Okay, going to California. Now you got hotels and all that, all those accommodations. And probably two nights of food and all that. That's probably six meals.

6:33That's going to be an upward of 700, 800 to a million. But you're getting 590. So you took an L and took an L. Going and getting beat down. Literally. Yeah. So. What if mind control is real? If you could control the behavior of anybody around you, what kind of life would you have? Can you hypnotically persuade someone to buy a car? When you look at your car, you're going to become overwhelmed with such good feelings. Can you hypnotize someone into sleeping with you? I gave her some suggestions to be sexually aroused. Can you get someone to join your cult? NLP was used on me to access my subconscious.

7:11NLP, aka Neuro Linguistic Programming, is a blend of hypnosis, linguistics, and psychology. Fans say it's like finally getting a user manual for your brain. It's about engineering consciousness. Mind Games is the story of NLP. It's crazy cast of disciples and the fake doctor who invented it at a new age commune and sold it to guys in suits. He stood trial for murder and got acquitted. The biggest mind game of all? NLP might actually work. This is wild. Listen to Mind Games on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. 9:50Jesse Mills, director of the Men's Clinic at UCLA Health and host of the Mailroom Podcast. Each January, guys everywhere make the same resolutions. Get stronger, work harder, fix what's broken. But what if the real work isn't physical at all? To kick off the new year, I sat down with Dr. Steve Poulter, a psychologist with over 30 years experience helping men unpack shame, anxiety, and emotional pain they were never taught to name. In a powerful two-part conversation, we discuss why men aren't emotionally bulletproof, why shame hides in plain sight, and how real strength comes from listening to yourself and to others.

10:25Guys who are toxic, they're immature, or they've got something they just haven't resolved. Once that gets resolved, then there comes empathy, as in compassion. If you want this to be the year you stop powering through pain and start understanding what's underneath, listen to The Mailroom on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your favorite shows. To me, if I put my kids in a situation where there's no win and it's detrimental to their health, I'm selling them out. We're big on that terminology in African-Americans. I'm putting you in a situation where I know you're not going to win.

11:10And I'm not even getting handsomely compensated for it. That's the problem. But you have the same situation when another school goes to Nebraska and play, and they get 1.4 or 1.7. Another school goes to Penn State and go to one of these other schools, and they get 1.5 or they get 1.3. They're doing better business. To me, isn't the value not in the school that could beat me, it's in the school that I'm going to beat. Because I really just played a setup game just to beat you, right? If I'm paying you, that means I need to whoop you. When a boxer pays another boxer, they paying him to what? Whoop him.

11:49Mayweather ain't going to pay you if his purse is$20 million and he paying you$15 million. No, no, he's going to pay you significantly less because he knows he's going to whoop you. it don't make sense to me man the numbers just don't add up to me that's a problem for me so who negotiates that from the school? it has to be the AD the AD does it? yes I remember when I used to play basketball I used to see like Coppin State the first 15 games was on the road they played Ohio State, Michigan beatdowns pocket's fat though start the season off like 0-10, 0-12 I was going to say, the SEC has that one week every year.

12:28They're like, this is Cupcake City. Why are you playing UCL Monroe? Because it's a pay game for them. Right. Yeah, but you got to make sure you get compensated enough. It's not worth my kids getting hurt. Then I got to go and talk to them. You know what? We could do it next week. I know what happened last week. I'm sorry about that. We had to go get the bag. That's what the conversation should be. We had to go get the bag. But guess what? We could do it this week. We could beat them. Yeah. I can't do it. I can't sell my kids like that. That's what I'm saying. even when you get the bag, it's still coming back to the school, not necessarily the program.

12:59And you ain't even bringing enough back because you got to make it back home. Right. And you didn't even get enough to even make it back home with a bag. And at some point, a conversation has to be had about funding for these schools, especially the state schools, because it's like, why? A lot of these Ohio State's a state school. Like Florida State's a state school. but why do black state schools never get any money at all? Enrollment. You got to talk about enrollment and we got to quit stop accepting whatever they give us. They can't just throw no money at you and you say, oh, thank you. No, man.

13:39Stop accepting the foolishness that they give you. If you accept peanuts, they're going to think you're a monkey. Sooner later, you got to stop dancing and clapping for the little dives they're throwing on your plate. You got to demand we deserve more, and this is why, and it's documented. So one of the things you talked about, obviously, is the facilities. If we're going to grow and win, when comes success, comes more money. I know even like here, when you came here, this room we were sitting in did not exist. No, it didn't. The practice field did not exist. The other practice field did not exist.

14:14None of this existed, and And we're thankful that we have an AD that knows how to fight. And we partner and we communicate and we articulate to one another the needs and the thoughts and the process of getting them. And then I got partners who helped. And one of the things that kind of got glossed over was like, even when this wasn't ready, Coach Prompt said, look, take whatever I'm making, make it happen. Yeah, I had to finish. Get it done. I had to get it done. because I'm going I get tired of telling people this this this this this only you just made me I do it I'm going to tell you to cut the grass three times okay after that I'm going to do it okay so I'm not going to sit up here and just cry cry cry I'm going to give you an opportunity to do what you've been handsomely paid to do your job then again I'm going to do it so you've become the most recognizable person in the state of Mississippi um and I don't even think it's close was probably by a landslide.

15:13So with that, I'm assuming it is a lot on your plate that you probably necessarily didn't sign up for. So we just had, I'm not gonna say that. No, everything that that's on my plate, I've been through the process at the youth level, at the high school level, or at some level, God has taken me through it in the dark. So when you hit the lights, I was ready. my graduates from my school being forbes back drop back drop a mic drop back drop
