In short
Cordae discusses how he built a “powerhouse” stock portfolio during the 2020 pandemic, his buy-and-hold strategy, and how he screens new investments (moat, free cash flow, AI relevance, valuation) using tools like ChatGPT/Claude and cross-referencing “big gains” investors.
Guests
Cordae (rapper/artist; self-described aggressive investor in his 20s, researching charts, taking “generational buying time,” and holding long-term positions like Apple/Microsoft/Nvidia). Interviewer: Ian (hosts the conversation; asks about his investing process and balancing long vs short term).
Key claims
Buy-and-hold (HODL) + dollar-cost averaging; separate trading vs long-term accounts; trading can erode generational gains; use valuation (P/E, P/G) but prioritize moat and free cash flow; prefer “check cashers” tied to hyperscalers’ AI spending.
Notable examples
Early buys in Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia; later focus on Micron and memory/AI exposure (DROM ETF, Micron); Intel sold after a ~25% gain; Oracle considered “half off” its highs; Sandisk traded multiple times; Micron cost basis around $5.80; uses EMA concepts (200/50) and targets long-term capital gains holding ~1 year+1 month.

4:43I want to have an investment conversation because people don't really know that you are really into investing. We learned this when we first met you probably five years ago and we interviewed you and you was talking about all the investments that you made during the pandemic since then and like i said like i'm not just being facetious guys like he's actually in the eyl university classes like he watches the classes he's actually doing things on his own he's studying charts he's actually he's locked in bro a real a real investor in real time no this is uh and it doesn't even come as a surprise when we met you five years ago we were like this he's gonna be one of the ones to come back full circle and hear that you're still investing in it but to hear the stories like we talk almost maybe once or twice a week now and i'm like i don't think that people understand like the knowledge that you have and all the research that you've been doing and you like we're pretty candid yo but i've been watching y 'all and i've been learning from y 'all man so kudos to you for number one taking the information but even more so executing on the information man so so off off rip let's get into it man let's for people that might not remember that episode, tell them how you got started investing because it was during the pandemic and you made some crazy investments during the pandemic.
5:56Are you still holding those investments that you have made? For sure. Buy and hold. H-O-D-L. One. Thank you. Yeah. Yeah. Come on. Generational buying time, right? One, I try not to call myself a great investor. I've just been mega blessed to come in at the perfect timing. I was on tour, obviously pandemic happened, March 20, March 30th, 2020. And I just had all this extra just dry powder, for lack of a better word, just sitting in a savings account. And so I've been doing a lot of research and I also was hearing a lot about stocks, watching you guys. My little brother's dad was putting me on to like stocks or things of that nature.
6:42So I just bought like the simple stuff, you know, Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, and them lots, man. I still, you know how you can look on your Charles Schwab, them lots, man, and them lots say them dates and, you know, that Nvidia say$30, you know, average price. It's a great feeling, man. You know, so buy and hold, dollar cost average. Then now the only problem when you get in stocks early like that, and I have the same issue with Micron, I have such a hard time buying on these little dicks now. Yeah, because right now, perfect example, Micron, my cost basis at like a 580. I'm like, yo, I do not want to get it to 600, but I just believe in memory, at least for the next year, you know, put that right there.
7:27I believe in memory at the very least, if I'm being bearish for the next year for it to keep running up. So I go on that tangent to say, yeah, just from watching you all, I kind of had this little tool that I do now when I'm buying something new. Obviously, if it's something that you guys are mega bullish on, and then I'll use my chat, GBT or Claude and cross-reference, I'll be like, okay, what does Leopold, Gavin Baker, and Nancy Pelosi, what's one common stock that all of them own? You know what I'm saying? And David Tepper. And so I just go to all the people who has the biggest gains, like I said, including if y 'all talking about it, then I see like Leopold, Gavin Baker, Nancy, and Tepper all in the same thing, and they're all in Micron, all in Amazon, then I'm like, okay, let me load the boat on those once I get it at a good price, obviously.
8:20You know, I kind of do the 200 EMAs, 50 EMAs, but I'm more of just like, I'm repeating a lot of the sentiments I'm saying is stuff that y 'all say all the time. but it don't hurt to repeat gold. You know, gold don't get old. But it's just buying good stocks at good prices, man. That's really what it's about, honestly, for me personally and my journey. Your journey has been incredible and watching your journey has just been more incredible. I want it now because you're finding new companies, right? Like when we've had conversations, I'm like, where'd you hear that? And then like, I'll go research a company.
8:56So when you're doing that, what exactly are you looking at in terms of a company before you say, yes, I'm going to invest? Okay, one, I'm so glad you said this, Ian, because I was a slave to the Ford P &Es for a little bit. And that's not always the best case, honestly, like just looking at P &Es. But it is important. So I look at the price to earnings ratios. I look at the PG. More importantly, before that, I look at the moat, right? I look at how strong is their moat. What is their competitors looking like? What is their free cash flow looking like? And what is their correlation to AI? And are they a check casher or a check writer?
9:43Right now I like investing in all the check cashers, the one that the hyperscalers are pouring all these trillions of dollars into. And so yeah, I like the check cashers right now. Just great companies at great prices, right? And they have a very strong moat. And it's like, look, man, I'm mega blessed, bro. I'm still in my 20s. So I'm a little bit more aggressive than like the average investor would be and should be. Honestly, let me put that right there. I know y 'all start off the episode with that, but I'm gonna say it myself. Please do your own diligent research. You know, who cares what Ja Rule think?
10:18You know what I'm saying?
10:24Shout out to Ja. Shout out to Ja. You get the reference. Yeah. But yeah, man, just great companies with a strong moat. Great correlation for AI for me personally, because I believe, like, I always tell my friends I be trying to get all my loved ones to invest in whatever. They all down for the options, though. It's much easier to convince people to get in the option than it is for the buy and hold, bro. We're getting there, Cody. I got to ask you. How are you balancing the long-term versus short-term? And to that family point, how do you think we get our family members to see the value of holding long-term versus the quick flip?
11:08Man, that's difficult, bro. I'm not going to lie because... It's tough. Man, I showed them the lots. You know what I'm saying? I'll literally show, hey, I put this much. I'm showing them the lots, like the broken down lot. Like, yo, I bought this and this. Mind you, our episode, when we first did our first interview, that was 2021. So that's six years. Yeah, yeah, that's five years ago. Excuse me. So I showed them the lots, and I'm like, man, if you just put this down and just hold, but nobody want to hear that. But when I brought up the options, they're like, man, I done did an X10 in a weekly, everybody's down.
11:46That's so much easier to convince folks to do options. So I don't know. It just depends on the individual, bro. Honestly, it falls on deaf ears when I'm really preaching on just buying and holding. Just get your ETS. I'm preaching to the literal choir. I'm preaching to the literal choir. But yeah, so how do I balance it? So I have a separate trading account and then I have my buying hold. So my trading account, I might do it. Can I curse or no? Yeah, of course. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. So I might get a little shit cold every now and then in the trading account. You know what I'm saying? But that won't touch the long term.
12:27The buying hold got the gold in it. That's Apple, Microsoft, NVIDIA, Micron, QQs, et cetera. But honestly, I've kind of came to the realization that I really need to stop trading because this is another bar you said, Ian. You be trading away your generational wealth for the quick 30 % slip, the quick doubles, the quick triples. And it's true because, bro, NVIDIA, it's like we up 780%. You know what I'm saying? Just from buying and holding. But if I just would have flipped and just bought and sold NVIDIA for like a 0.50, not 0.50, for a 50 % gain, then what are we talking about so but so i trade the companies that i'm like i like a lot but i don't know if i want to hold them forever like like perfect example intel when intel hit like 89 man i bought a bunch of shares and i just sold them today i just sold them today because i'm like yeah i'm up a good 25 i'm cool on that um i trade the the out of sand disk bro i tried to buy a whole thing but i'm in too late man i got it so i and it's too up and down for me man so i bought sand this at like 980 when uh it hit the leopold lows you know july 30th i bought at like 980 sold it at like 1500 bought it again at 12 sold it at 16 bought it at 15.
13:51sold at like 17 77 so i have certain stocks to where like the nand i feel like in the memory and again this is just my personal opinion out of All the memory stocks, I feel like NAND has the weakest moat versus the HBM and the DROM, et cetera. So that's why I like buying and holding the DROM ETF, buying and holding the Micron, at least until I get a full year and a month. So I get the long-term versus short-term capital gains, because that's a big difference. So yeah, so I kind of, I trade the companies that I'm like bullish on, at least for right now, for the next year or two, you know, but like as far as buying and holding or like Even like an Oracle, man, it's like half off an all-time high right now.
14:36The Ford P &E is like all-time low for Oracle. So I might trade some Oracle right now, honestly. Ernest, what's up? Look, on Ernie Leisure, we're all about smart money moves.
