Each January, men promise to get stronger, work harder, and fix what's broken. But what if the real work isn't physical at all? I sat down with psychologist Dr. Steve Poulter to unpack shame, anxiety, and the emotional pain men were never taught how to name. Part of the way through the valley of despair is realizing this has happened, and you have to make a choice whether you're going to stay in it or move forward. Our two-part conversation is available now.
27Listen to The Mailroom on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your favorite shows. This episode is brought to you by PNC Bank. A lot of people think podcasts about work are boring. And sure, they definitely can be. But understanding a professional's routine shows us how they achieve their success little by little, day after day. It's like banking with PNC Bank. It might seem boring to save, plan, and make calculated decisions with your bank, but keeping your money boring is what helps you live a more happily fulfilled life. PNC Bank, brilliantly boring since 1865. Brilliantly boring since 1865 is a service mark of the PNC Financial Service Group, Inc.
11PNC Bank, National Association, member FDIC. As we're talking about that education process, when you're taking on a client, how important is that they're thinking about life after the career before you involve them and sign them to clutch? It's very important. And I'm telling you, man, athletes, they live a tough life. It looks great. But when you think about all they endure and the pull down. You know, I always tell my family, let me be your back line of defense. You know, don't allow yourself to think that what's mine is yours. But if I'm your back line of defense, then, you know, we can really stay afloat.
01For athletes, we all have survivor's remorse, right? We all have that feeling that we feel obligated. And like Mr. Bridgman said, I got guys 22 making$200 million over the next four or five years. I got several of those guys, right? And by the way, but, but the reality of it is I'm constantly telling them that's not a lot of money based upon where you're starting because you're starting from zero, right? So how do we, understand how to compound that because they're done at 33. Everyone's not going to be played to their 40. They're done when they're 33. That money's taxed. You know, they're paying a 55, 51 % tax.
51Not to mention jeans today, the ones they want that they're buying in excess, which they probably don't really need that, cost two grand. It's not the same. His jeans cost$25. It's a difference. And so it's all relative. No athlete can afford to fly private all the time. Yet we see so many athletes on the Instagram flying private. I fly Delta. I cannot afford to fly private. And that's okay with me. You know what? And I'll fly. I'll. What if mind control is real? If you could control the behavior of anybody around you, what kind of life would you have? Can you hypnotically persuade someone to buy a car?
30When you look at your car, You're going to become overwhelmed with such good feelings. Can you hypnotize someone into sleeping with you? I gave her some suggestions to be sexually aroused. Can you get someone to join your cult? NLP was used on me to access my subconscious. NLP, aka Neuro Linguistic Programming, is a blend of hypnosis, linguistics, and psychology. Fans say it's like finally getting a user manual for your brain. It's about engineering consciousness. Mind Games is the story of NLP. It's crazy cast of disciples and the fake doctor who invented it at a new age commune and sold it to guys in suits.
09He stood trial for murder and got acquitted. The biggest mind game of all? NLP might actually work. This is wild. Listen to Mind Games on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. A new year doesn't mean erasing who you were. I'm Mike Dallarocha, host of Sacred Lessons. This podcast is a space for men to talk openly about mental health, grief, relationships, and the patterns we inherit, but don't have to repeat.

31And I'm Joel. We are from the How to Money podcast, and every week we help you to spend smarter, save more, and make sense of what's going on out there. If you want 2026 to be the year you finally feel in control of your money, we're here to give you the tools and advice to help you make it happen. Listen to How to Money on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey there, this is Dr. Jesse Mills, director of the men's clinic at UCLA Health and host of the Mailroom Podcast. Each January, guys everywhere make the same resolutions. Get stronger, work harder, fix what's broken.
05But what if the real work isn't physical at all? To kick off the new year, I sat down with Dr. Steve Poulter, a psychologist with over 30 years experience helping men unpack shame, anxiety, and emotional pain they were never taught to name. In a powerful two-part conversation, we discuss why men aren't emotionally bulletproof, why shame hides in plain sight, and how real strength comes from listening to yourself and to others. Guys who are toxic, they're immature, or they've got something they just haven't resolved. Once that gets resolved, then there comes empathy, as in compassion. If you want this to be the year you stop powering through pain and start understanding what's underneath, listen to The Mailroom on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your favorite shows.
53Hey, what's up, y 'all? This is Questlove. Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with A$AP Rocky ahead of his album release, Don't Be Dumb. He reflects on his journey from his Harlem roots to global icon status, discovering the hip-hop origin of his name. The ledge was on the TV. Rakim had the bucket hat Kangol during the podcast. Like, that's Rakim. That's who you named after. I just was like, damn, that **** got swag. Rocky offers a window into not only a boundary-breaking artist, but as a man committed to fusing creative ideas, community, and remaining unapologetically himself. Have you ever gotten roasted for any of your outfits?
30For sure. Some people don't be getting the vision. Look, they can roast me. They can cook me. They can deep fry me. They can saute whatever they want. It's nobody who can f*** with my fashion sense and my taste is impeccable. I'm just like, I impress myself a lot. It's an amazing conversation. One you definitely don't want to miss. So listen to the Questlove show on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I was sitting in the Comfort Plus as well. Comfort Plus? yeah because I'm just trying to get where I'm trying to go to make the money I'm not trying to spend the money you know I'm trying to get there you know and and the times I do fly private you will never see it on Instagram because it's not for show and so I think that again it's just this mentality you have to value infrastructure in any business in anything whether that's a family infrastructure whether it's a business infrastructure.
34You have to have that. You can't scale without the infrastructure. But again, growing up, all we know is how to compete amongst one another. He's been around a long time. These guys have come in and out the league. They don't aspire to be him, right? But they want to be the rappers, et cetera, because they want to do things in excess. He's got an unbelievable portfolio. Imagine if we had our own fund that we allow him to oversee as well as someone from Blackstone or someone from Apollo or someone from Aries. And then we compounded just 20 % of that income. I don't need the whole tree. In the circles I run in, they're much more wealthy than I am.
25But like I tell them, I just want a little piece of the bark. I don't need the whole, You know, I don't need I just want to get in the back seat right? I'm gonna shut up. I'm gonna sit back here You don't even notice I'm here. That's how I look at myself And I really believe that and so I just try to get my guys understand that because We come from an environment to where we only want to conquer. We want to conquer That's why we killing each other. We want to conquer there can only be one king which allows you Not to collaborate if you don't collaborate then that means we're not communicating if we're not communicating then that means we're unable to build what?
03A community. If we don't build a community then how are we gonna build anything generational? You're just saying some shit that sound great. You know what I'm saying? But that's not, it's not realistic without taking the proper steps. You understand what I'm saying? And we've all been there. You know I come from just as tough places anybody in the world but at the same time I can't have the same habits once I made it out, I can't go back and glorify the same things and not give it up, right? But if you're going to ask me for a job, you also have to be capable of doing the work. I can't give you anything, right?
42You've got to be capable of actually doing it once that opportunity is given. And so it's a two-way street. And I just, you know, I stress, I really stress this all the time. I want to be able to hire as many people as I can, right? But you got to have the capabilities and so you know let's match each other's energy from that perspective and like he said everybody's not gonna get rich. That's not realistic. But you in position. We didn't grow up next to people that have careers. They had hustles, jobs. Some had decent jobs. Very few had good-ass jobs and careers. It's just the truth. And so we're trying to fill our way through, and life is all about managing transitions.
33You have to be able to, that's why a car comes with a transmission, to understand those gears. You got to know when to park, when to reverse, when to stay neutral, when to accelerate. that is real in life itself as well we've all been in a situation where we had to make decisions say you know what let me just back up a little bit or let me just park it right here before or if it's going great let me hit the gas and get to where I'm trying to go and so that's how I think every day I wake up I've never celebrated one deal I've done not one when I start working with LeBron and for LeBron. The most money I ever made working for LeBron was$48 ,000 a year.
12That's the most I ever made. I was only on his salary for two years. That was since 06, I've been off his payroll. Right? We're in 2023. It was important for me to get off of his payroll as fast as I possibly could. That was very important to me. Ernest, what's up? You ever walk into a small business and everything just works?
