In short
Breakdown and speculation on the unexpectedly released first proper trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, including its multiverse/incursion setup, team lineups, and key character beats ahead of a likely San Diego Comic-Con panel.
Guests
Helen O’Hara (film/TV critic at Empire; focuses on character details like Steve Rogers’ hair and Thor’s accent) and James Dyer (Empire colleague; emphasizes Doom’s motivations/logic and whether Downey’s casting implies a Stark connection).
Key claims
Steve Rogers appears alive and older/“hippie” after Endgame time travel; Thor reacts as if Doom/this threat is unprecedented. Doom (voiced by Robert Downey Jr.) warns of an “unthinkable decision,” implying something worse than Doom and tying to incursions/multiverse collapse. The trailer suggests multiple teams (New Avengers, Thunderbolts, Fantastic Four, X-Men) pulled into a Watchtower-based conflict with a ticking-clock “Doomsday” countdown. Doom may be siphoning powers (possibly targeting god-level figures like Franklin Richards or Sentry).
Notable examples
Xavier’s School explosion; Doom stopping Stormbreaker with two fingers; Fantastic Four arriving via a “flux capacitor”/time-jump; Loki checking his TVA-style ID; Namor/Atlantis meeting Wakanda; Cyclops optic blasts at the X-Mansion; Thunderbolts lineup including US Agent, Red Guardian, Yelena, Ghost, and Bucky.

Transcript
Automatic transcript. May contain errors.0:14Chris Hewitt:Hello Pod, I'm Chris Hewitt and welcome to a very special edition of the Empire Podcast and Empire Plus, of course, because we have been summoned, summoned by... public demand to get together and talk about a little trailer that has just dropped just over an hour ago without warning just like victor von doom himself it is of course the first proper trailer i would say although i i really liked the kind of weird avant-garde trailers that they did back in January for Avengers Doomsday. That's right, Avengers Doomsday, dropping unexpectedly five days ahead of the Marvel Studios panel, and ergo, we think, the Avengers Doomsday panel at the San Diego Comic-Con.
1:12Chris Hewitt:This is very interesting, unexpected, and you want us to break it down. We want to break it down, even though I'm going to have a breakdown breaking this down, because I've got a lot of shit to do because I fly to San Diego tomorrow. Anyway, I'm joined by two colleagues of such lethal cunning, both of whom said, yes, Chris, let's do this now, you fucking idiots. Helen O 'Hara is here. Hello. Hooray. I hate you. I hate you. I hate you. James Dyer is also here. Hello. You could have said no to this, man. I could have said no. But I didn't. Duty calls, Chris. You know, I love nothing more than to break down a big old Avengers trailer.
1:50Chris Hewitt:I love it. I live for this shit. But honestly, they've not seen my schedule. I am busy. But anyway, here we are. This is interesting, guys. This is interesting. We're going to go through the trailer as best we can. Speculate wildly about it and what it could all mean. But what is your general reaction to this trailer for the Russo Brothers Avengers Doomsday? Hells Bells. I guess the feeling is really vindication, because all this time I've been saying that, you know, Cap is a miracle really just seems like it's paid off in this trailer, because that's how it talks about him as well. Do you think that, and listen, I don't want to be critical at all of your golden boy, Steve Rogers, but do you think that his hair in this trailer is a miracle, Helen?
2:41It's not far off. Okay, I mean, yes, there is some work that could be done around body and perhaps a trim. However, I put it to you, the beard makes up for a lot. You know how I feel about bearded cap, and therefore I'm on board. I mean, it's quite shadowy when you see him, but it feels like there's a hint of a mullet going on there. Like, what's happening with his hair there? No, no, it's not a mullet. It's just growing out. It's just a bit of a shag. He's let himself go, is what we're saying. retirement has not suited him Helen just said the words shag I was trying to overlook that
3:17Chris Hewitt:is he the super soldier who shagged me? no let's not go there yeah this is interesting so okay let's there's a lot of stuff to speculate on in this trailer but Steve Rogers hair is I think uppermost of the list yeah absolutely number one with a bullet what the fuck is going on? because okay so Thor I obviously don't know what point in the movie this is. They're not hiding their Steve Rogers, Chris Evans, light under a bushel. And that's probably a good thing because it means they got lots of goodies and surprises in the actual movie itself. Right. Also means I'm guessing that Steve Rogers plays a major, major role in this movie.
3:53Chris Hewitt:So that's good. What's going on? So the last time we saw him was at the end of Avengers Endgame when he traveled back in time, shacked up at Peggy. Yep. started getting down hot and heavy and now we see this kind of long haired greaser reprobate what's going on what is your I mean he's basically a hippie now at this stage he's smoking a doobie I don't know what he's doing maybe he's here from the 60s or 70s yeah like genuinely it could be alt universe cap of course but equally it could be 60s or 70s cap surely do you think this is the the steve rogers we saw at the end of a event end game i i don't know because i don't know that the filmmakers have even decided which steve rogers that was so um i mean it seems fairly clear doesn't it no you know what i mean but in terms of like how the mechanics of his traveling back in time worked and which reality he was in they couldn't quite decide on the mechanics quite decide so i don't have to decide which one this is that's official um but i think uh i think there's some time travel involved that's that's about as far as i'm i'm gonna go at this point i don't know but it does feel like it's our steve because he knows thor yeah i mean that feels yeah and that feels like the high pal feels like it's if it's not our steve it's a very very similar steve you know it's got to be steve it's got to be that steve but but what's happened why has he let himself go well he's got a new baby at home doesn't he isn't that what we learned doesn't have time to get a military haircut yeah there's more important stuff going on okay all right i'm just intrigued by it because uh thor says you know we'll we'll need a miracle and then obviously steve rogers is meant to be that miracle but all i can i just can't get past the hair i just don't think a miracle would have i mean he had amazing hair in infinity war it was just it was just fantastic but this feels this does feel a little bit like that is like plonked a wig on Chris Evans.
6:05He is like one deep condition and a tiny trim away from his Infinity War hair and that is close enough for me.
6:14Chris Hewitt:Why is Thor surprised to see him? So Thor's been alive, as he reminds us, in Infinity War for 1500 years and he has killed many, many, many people and in this trailer he bangs on about having fought with many warriors who are stronger than all you fucking idiots put together and they all died and you're still alive red guardian and that sucks quite frankly but you know you'd think he'd be a little bit less surprised when something seemingly impossible happens like Steve's not dead in this universe he just went missing and then we kind of know what happens like Sam and Bucky will presumably have told people after the end of Endgame oh by the way old Steve came back and gave me the shield so like is this going to be a real surprise to Thor Or what's going on?
7:01Are there two Steves now? Is there old Steve and young Steve? Or has old Steve become young Steve? Or is this second Steve? Or have they undone old Steve and now we just have young Steve? There's a lot of Steve questions here and I don't know the answers. Again, if they can't make up their mind, we don't have to make up our minds.
7:15Chris Hewitt:We had a fight, didn't we, in Endgame between two Steves? Can we have a fight in this one between young Steve and old Steve? Oh, my back! My back! He just snaps his neck like a twig. I am America's colostomy bag. That would be something you should say. No, that's not right. I feel like, as usual, we're starting at the end. Yes. Well, it's a big thing on my mind. Yeah, we should talk about mortals. If we start at the beginning, we should obviously talk about the surprise appearance of Count Orlok, who appears to be narrating this trailer, which was unexpected, I'm saying. Something's coming. Something we will not be able to deter before this day is done, we shall be faced with an unthinkable decision.
8:02You'll never see him coming. So that's meant to be Doom. That's Doom? One must assume that is a Latverian accent. That's Downey. That's Downey's voice. There's no question about it. Doom is saying that something bad is coming which they have to deter and that's what's driving him to be bad.
8:23Chris Hewitt:No. See, okay. From a certain point of view. Hell's Bells. Okay. We don't know at this point in time. The Comic-Con panel takes place on Saturday. They will probably say fuck all as well about this movie. I would imagine. But I do strongly believe that they can't just pull the magic box, there's nothing to see here, trick that they did with Avengers Endgame. Because that was like a built-in, hugely anticipated movie. Such a built-in audience for that film. Obviously an amazing cliffhanger at the end of Infinity War as well. and there's obviously a huge amount of anticipation for this and a great big a great big must see quotient of course but it's not as we talked about a lot on the empire podcast over the last couple of years you know the mcu is not the slam dunk bulletproof slam dunk that it once was and i think they need to be a little bit more forthcoming with some of the plot details of this movie.
9:17Chris Hewitt:My feeling on it is that it's all about incursions and threats to the multiverse and that Doom is coming to our universe to stave one of those off. And in order to do that, major choices are going to be made about who lives, who dies, who survives. Not like a pure villain, but like a kind of a misguided anti-heroic plot like like a mad titan for example oh the hero of the infinite target yeah okay i understand no i i understand that he was never going to consider himself a villain i get that they've done that every time quite a bit um i understand that um but at the same time it's odd to me that that's the doom quote i guess that they've chosen that him talking about something worse is coming is an interesting way into this, is what I'm saying.
10:15Because it implies that there is something else worse than him out there, which I guess, yes, absolutely makes sense if it's the incursions, having established that already. And I'm sure all the audience members, all the potential audience members of Doomsday will have a really, really clear and heartfelt memory of Doctor Strange in the multiverse of madness, and therefore will be super ready for that to be a major part of this one but look it has to be about collapsing multiverses doesn't it it has to be if we're going to kind of after this and secret wars start with a sort of reset marvel palette then this this has to be about collapsing some of the multiversal strands and the presence of loki in this trailer maybe points to that as well right and is that obviously a big zoom in on his tva id which makes you feel that the tva are involved in that so how are we going to do this are we going to go through this frame by frame we're
11:07Chris Hewitt:just going to kind of randomly jump around like what's the plan well okay let's let's let's do a couple of things that's just i mean god that would be nice wouldn't it we have 12 of a plan uh how about that just stand around in a virtual circle like a bunch of jackasses how about that uh so let's talk first of all before we get into it because um i do have it up on my screen so i'm I'm going to go through a frame by frame-ish because that would take fucking hours. I'm going to go through a frame by frame-ish and then we're going to talk about individual shots. But let's talk about the trailer as a whole, first of all.
11:40Chris Hewitt:Why now? Comic-Con is five days away. That's a very good question. It's kind of surprising. And now this is the trailer that played at CinemaCon, right? This is the same one. I think it is. I wasn't at CinemaCon, but there were, you know, very, very detailed descriptions of the footage that they showed at CinemaCon did leak. And a lot of this matches up. The thing that I think is new to this might be Downey's voice as Doom. And obviously some of the effect shots are a lot more finished than they would have been back in what, when was CinemaCon? CinemaCon, if you don't know, is this big thing for exhibitors in the States where they go to Las Vegas every year.
12:17Chris Hewitt:And the studios show the exhibitors their wares. And Disney went, we've got the small film called The Avengers Doomsday. Are you interested in putting it in your cinemas? Perhaps in infinity vision? That sounds good. and they showed some footage and they had Downey and Evans show up which would have been cool. I wasn't there obviously but yes, the end of this trailer definitely the stuff with Hey Pal and Captain America coming out of the shadows and meeting Thor. That's all. That all chimes with what we were told after CinemaCon. I'm not sure about the early stuff. I think I remember reading about a Mystique versus Yelena Belova fight where Mystique becomes Yelena and that's in the trailer.
12:58Chris Hewitt:That's pretty, pretty cool. Maybe Downey was in that as well but it strikes me that if we'd heard Downey Doom voice, people would have been talking about it. So that maybe feels like it's... Robert Doomey Jr.? Robert Doomey Jr.? What are we doing with this? So that feels like it's kind of brand new but why why now? Why not release this? I've just dropped a plectrum. Why not release this after Comic CinemaCon? fuck uh why release it ahead of comic-con why miss the odyssey window helen is holding her hand up she has answers well i have speculation which is that the tickets like helen i thought your answers which is that the tickets have just gone on sale so that would be a reason that might be more compelling to disney disney's marketing so because capitalism is what you're saying because capitalism is capitalism america because i mean you know cons are all very well for the you know So, I mean, in Comic-Con's case, it's big, but there's, what, 6 ,000 people can get into Hall H at a time.
13:59Cinema Con, I'm guessing similar numbers. That's nice and all, but, you know, tickets going on sale to the whole world is probably a bigger deal for them. I do think it's surprising, though, that they didn't try and put this in front of The Odyssey, which has obviously proved a huge hit over the weekend, and rightly so, because it rocks. but yeah I guess maybe because it's Rival Studios it wasn't quite that simple yeah maybe
14:26Chris Hewitt:maybe IMAX didn't want Infinity Vision being trumpeted also Dune is in front of Odyssey isn't it so the other half of Dune yeah it's interesting but why five days ahead of Comic Con I can only surmise using my big brain that they must have something major planned for Comic-Con. I hope so, because I'm going to be there. If not, this is going to be a real anticlimax for you. Oh, it's the trailer I saw several days ago. But I'm hopeful. I'm hopeful that we're going to see something really, really cool. I mean, we've seen like 1 % of the cast in this very packed trailer, so I wouldn't worry too much.
15:07I'm sure there's a lot going on here.
15:09Chris Hewitt:I'm pretty sure we've seen all the people who were announced on the chairs, haven't we? Back in that Endless Cast announcement I'm pretty sure everyone who was on that is in And obviously we're We are expecting there to be people In this who haven't been announced People like Tom Holland and Benedict Cumberbatch But the more I see footage from this movie I'm wondering if that's going to be the case at all You're wondering I'm wondering She's been flattened under a rock We think We think so maybe she's one of the people that Thor is talking about when he says I fought with many warriors in my time ooh they were stronger than all of us put together like Wanda where's Wanda when you need her?
15:51Chris Hewitt:crushed can I ask an incredibly nerdy law based question oh fuck yeah so Doctor Doom here is the big bad and Doctor Doom is if we are to believe Thor is referring to him is a terrifying threat maybe he's referring to the incursions maybe it's not Doom that he's referring to but there's certainly a bit at the end where Doom stops Stormbreaker with two fingers, which is a baller move, whereas Thanos, with all of his gems, failed to stop it entirely. But Doctor Doom, as is my understanding from the comics, from a power point of view, he's basically Iron Man meets Doctor Strange, right? Like, he has powered armour, but he also has magic stuff.
16:27And barring a few special comics where, like, he gets the power of, like, at one point, the Beyonders power, doesn't he? Where he becomes super powerful and he does rip Thanos' spine out, this whole thing. he's not like super super super super super super powered but here he seems to be super super super super super powered
16:44Chris Hewitt:any thoughts? I think we are meeting him at some distance along his evolution and we're not this isn't a Doctor Doom origin story and the worry for me is that this all feels a little Thanos-y that he's maybe collecting things, collecting people collecting people's powers, maybe siphoning off powers, he's a great big siphoner Peter Petrelli. He loves to siphon. Peter Petrelli. He's gone full Peter Petrelli. Or Siler, if you want to take it a slightly more grim way. Oh, my God. Peter Petrelli. That's a fucking blast of the past. Save the cheerleader. Save the world. Yes, indeed. So he's, I think he's siphoned.
17:24Chris Hewitt:You know, we meet him in the MCU, taking a great interest in Franklin Richards, for example, who we know has God-level powers. so has he siphoned Franklin's powers has he kidnapped Franklin is that why the Fantastic Four follow him from their world their dimension into our dimension so I think that when they meet him he is nearly god level powers but I'm also intrigued by this idea that you just can't take him at face value obviously I don't think he thinks of himself as the bad guy of his story Helen but you know we we've read speculation that he seduces one of the teams of Avengers because there are two teams of Avengers in this.
18:12Chris Hewitt:We get to see them at one point. There's a shot that we'll talk about. Yeah. And he seduces the kind of, I think it's the Thunderbolts. Yes. And you can see how he has seduced them with merch, which is how Red Guardian got his vanilla ice new Avengers outfit. And I, for one, want one of those. I don't. That looks so terrible. I can't even begin to tell you how bad that looks. but I'm sure it's very funny in the film. On purpose. Yes, on purpose bad, of course, we should say that. And I think that he may be telling him a pack of lies, maybe? Yeah, I think there's clearly in this trailer a sort of tension among teams, opposing teams.
18:53We get Avengers or a version of Avengers versus X-Men here. A versus X, oh my god! But But it's unclear what is driving that and who's on which side from what we see. I think you're probably right that he's got at least one of the Avengers teams sort of on board with whatever he's trying to do. And that does suggest seduction and not just... It could suggest mind control, but I think it's more likely to be seduction and an idea of trying to convince people. So that speech at the start, I guess, would make more sense. It makes not very much sense to me as a way of establishing doom for the audience.
19:28it makes a lot more sense as a way of establishing doom for one of the teams he is trying to seduce because they are primed uh for somebody turning up and going hey there's a gigantic threat coming that we need to prepare for um and we need to it's absolutely necessary that we do this because they've been through that i think that's a really interesting kind of wrinkle with this version of the avengers they've been through thanos they've they've survived that but they have five years, some of them, of memories, or five years missing from their lives, if not, of what Thanos did. And that's a really kind of traumatising place to start from.
20:06So if somebody else turns up and says, hey, the universe is in danger, they're going to take that seriously, and they may make mistakes as a result. Right? Yeah.
20:16Chris Hewitt:Especially if he's compelling and charismatic and not clearly a bad guy encased in a metal mask. I mean, yeah, but then this is the thing, isn't it? Like, we shouldn't just this whole kind of bond villain thing where all the bad guys are nasty looking all the good guys are handsome like it's not great from a like i don't know civilizational point of view is it like we shouldn't be thinking that way that way lies bad decision making i don't know if a guy turns credit to them if they are trusting the guy in the metal mask i think more full limb if a guy turns up speaking like that and he's in a metal mask and he calls himself i was about to say his name is dr doom his name is victor von doom and he studied and he got a doctorate nominative determinism more power to him if he was called like mr flowers or mr happy you'd be like all right fair enough oh okay so so it's fine to judge people you don't judge people by their appearances but you do judge them by their names yeah dire definitely yeah and it's on brand right so yeah wow you can never say you weren't warned Helen apostrophes and names a dead a dead giveaway um all right okay so what do we make of Downey voice what do we make of Downey Doomy voice Robert Robert Doomy Jr obviously look we haven't been to Latveria what with it not existing so it's hard to criticise but it definitely seems to slip on that one word it's like next to Gracoja yeah Yakshima What word does it slip on?
21:48Chris Hewitt:And how can it slip if it's a made-up accent? Well, exactly my point, but it still slips. Play the trailer and I'll remember the word. Does it slip as much as Thor's pseudo-British accent? Because it does feel a little bit like Hemsworth is straddling the British-Aussie divide during that. It feels like he's just given up. He's going, fuck it, mate. Thor's in Australia now, mate. Deal with it. All right. One quick trailer watch later. It's Fist. He suddenly goes Yorkshire or something. Fist. It's an unthinkable decision. Maybe my wife is next. Who knows? We shall be Fist. Fist. No, but seriously, listen to just the word Fist.
22:27Chris Hewitt:No, I've heard it. I've listened to it. I've just listened to it. And that's the word that it slips on. Fist. Fist. All right. But look, we can't criticise it because maybe that's how they talk in that various. That's maybe how they talk. You know. Yeah. Yeah. James, thoughts on Downey? Thoughts on the voice? I still don't fully understand. I hope there's a reason why it's Downey and not just because he's Downey. If there's no connection of any kind between Doom and Stark, then I don't understand what's happening. It can't be that they just said, you know what, Downey, we're mates with Downey.
23:05Let's work with him again. Let's do it. You can put him behind a mask anyway. What difference does it make? There has to be some way that these characters align mythologically somehow.
23:12Chris Hewitt:I'm torn here because I don't think there should be. But then why? I'm incompletely because, as they said when they unveiled him, he's one of the greatest actors on the planet. There are other great actors. And he comes to you and says to you, I'd like to play Doctor Doom. You go, all right, fuck it. Let's give it a go. I think that's what happened. I really hope not. And I don't think they should tie themselves in knots trying to tie him to Tony Stark. I think they have to. I don't think they have to, but I think it would sit better with me if they tried to. I'm kind of more inclined to agree with James on this, and you know how that upsets me.
23:48Chris Hewitt:I'm furious about it myself. I just feel like, you know, if there isn't some kind of parallel between them, it's just a slightly distracting choice. And look, that's now. Like, there's loads of things that we think are going to be distracting when we see the trailer for something. It's fucking distracting! And then in the film, they're actually totally fine. So maybe it will be totally fine whatever they do, but right now it does feel like it should be connected, like it would make more sense if it were connected. I don't get that. First of all, I can understand. Listen, if they do connect him somehow, and I know we've speculated endlessly.
24:27This is maybe why they trust him then. If he's trying to seduce people, that could be a reason why they might trust him.
24:33Chris Hewitt:Well, he takes his mask off, which is very Undoom-like, first of all, and then goes, hey, it's me, your old pal Tony, even though I look and sound completely different. I would hope the screenwriting is better than that, but yes. Yes. I don't think he's going to do that. I really don't. I think, listen to that voice. We have been faced with that voice. And I think that judging on those three sentences of Downy Doom that we've heard, that's not Tony Stark's voice. That's not Tony Stark's cadence. That's not Tony Stark's rhythm. Obviously, it's not Tony Stark's accent. So I don't think this is like even, probably will be.
25:10Chris Hewitt:I'll look stupid. I'll have super hate in my face. This is going to be one of those things where this, this is going to get clipped and put on life. Yeah, you know what I'll clip? You know what I'll fucking clip? Me calling Luke Skywalker being in The Mandalorian Season 2 weeks before it fucking happened. That's what I'll clip. You come at me with a clip, I'll come at you with a clip. That's how you get Capone. That's the Chicago way. But I don't know that it's going to be that. And also, if they're going to go down the proper Doom route, he shouldn't take his mask off. You know, he should be behind the mask the entire time.
25:38Chris Hewitt:I think, you know, I think that's part of the - Dread, if you will. Not judge dread. Yes. I think that's part of the appeal for Downey as well. He doesn't have to turn up on days he doesn't feel like it and somebody else can stand in. That's right. Yes, Pedro Pascal. I was going to say, would it be funny if Pedro Pascal did all the mocap for Doom? That would be amazing. That would be amazing. He's got to be there anyway playing Reed, so he might as well. He might as well, yeah. He is, we can see him in his little reedy face in this as well. But listen, we'll know the answers soon enough. They may even talk about this at Comic Con.

26:12Chris Hewitt:Who knows, we shall see. But I just, the unthinkable decision that they're faced with. Faced. Faced. Faced. Faced. My wife is very... And McPortal like wizard sleeve. Oh no. No. Oh dear, maybe we'll have a naked Doom fight where they're... Where he's in a mankini. Yes, Doom and Cap are completely naked and only their genitals are obscured by a black censorship bar. Helen has raised... I didn't know it was possible to raise more than two eyebrows, but Helen somehow managed to do that with that. But yeah, then we have a shot of Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. How many times has this school been ruined?
26:57what are the insurance rates that Xavier is paying? And how is he covered? I know he's rich, but I don't know how he's covering that insurance. It must be astronomical at this point. My God.
27:09Chris Hewitt:Maybe he's just given up on insurance after all these years. He's just like, no one will back him. Maybe he has Magneto, like, you know, assaying rare metal around the world for him and just selling that to cover his repair bills. It must be something like that, I swear. What do you mean like Charlie X is pulling heists with a Magneto to try and pay for the repairs? I didn't even say heist. I just meant he's going out in the world finding uncovered, unexploited mines and just like instantly digging up a whole bunch of whatever and using that to pay for the school. I don't think heist is necessary.
27:45They don't need to go to Fort Knox. They can just go into the world and find some gold. It's easy. That is fair.
27:53Chris Hewitt:Also, this is incredible.
27:58Chris Hewitt:I've just had cramp when I'm sitting down. Ow, that hurts. Anyway, so then we have, this is kind of some of the same footage we saw on the trailers that came out in January. In fact, there are a couple of shots in this later on. There's the Cyclops, the James Morrison Cyclops unleashing his optic blasts, which is literally from one of the trailers. But over this, we have Doom saying something's coming. Something we may not be able to deter. He actually says, before this day is done, we shall be fessed with an unthinkable decision. that's what he says as we see images of there seems to be some sort of fireball exploding outside the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters we see Patrick Stewart as Professor X going oh that's a bit bright isn't it so what's happening here is this an incursion or is something else happening here is this doom arriving in the X-Men's universe it could be a sun I read it like a sun solar event kind of explosion.
29:05I don't know. But yeah, it seems to be big and it seems to be bad, maybe.
29:09Chris Hewitt:A big bad. A big bad, if you will. Like Victor Von Doom. And then we see Doom arriving and we see him standing up in a sort of hero way, but inverted this time like a bad guy. I like the lens flare. It's green. Do you notice that? A little, nice little wrinkle. going on there, his little lens fair as he reveals the sun behind him. Does he think, do you think that's Earth? Does he think it's Earth? Do you think that's Earth? I thought that was the same Ryn planet or wherever that he meets Thor. Quite possibly. Do you think that might be the X-Men's planet? I honestly don't know. I got alien vibes, but I have no idea why.
29:53Chris Hewitt:Yeah. It's interesting that the Guardians aren't in this, and the iteration of the Guardians. Any either of you surprised by that, disappointed by that? Well, after not landing a single blow on Thanos, somebody that each of them had a personal grudge against, maybe they've just been permanently sidelined. I think we've established Star-Lord is a fucking liability. So actually, they probably just said, you know what, we don't need your help, fuck off. Go and eat breakfast cereal with your granddad. There you go, there's a good boy. All right, then we have the Marvel Studios logo. Very exciting, very exciting.
30:24Chris Hewitt:Then we have, oh, look at this. It's the shot of New York, which is in America. and there we see what is now called it's not called Avengers Tower anymore it might be called the new Avengers Tower by the time this movie starts but it is called the Watchtower so this has been bought by FAL so this is now the headquarters of the new Jehovah's Witnesses presumably which is a hard left term for the MCU
30:53maybe what's coming is the rapture that's actually what this whole film is about we kind of had that didn't we what with Thanos
31:01Chris Hewitt:yeah wouldn't some people in the MCU like the world of the MCU have perceived that as the rapture probably but the rapture is supposed to leave fewer people behind I think or take fewer people than 50 % I think some of the believers would be very upset if the rapture took just 50 % randomly that would make a mockery of everything wouldn't it it's just chance maybe it took all the people who think that So they'll never know. Anyways, we have a nice new Avengers logo on here because it's for the new Avengers, which is nice. Well done, everybody. It's very, very exciting. Oh, here's an exciting shot.
31:38Chris Hewitt:We see the Fantastic Four walking through some sort of entrance. We see Pedro Pascal. We see Vanessa Kirby. We see The Thing played by Eben Moss Bacharach. And you can just about make him out. Johnny Storm played, of course, by Joseph Quinn. And in the background, guys, it's only bloody Thor. So at some point in this movie, Thor teams up with the FF and he comes to Earth. And so am I guessing, does he encounter Doom somewhere else? And then he's like, oh, this is all for an Infinity War, isn't it? I'm really worried about how they're not just going to replicate Infinity War and find new beats.
32:18I think there is going to be a bit of that structure because you just have to get all these people in one place. so there's going to be a little bit of you know that sort of oh it's three hours of people just arriving I don't think it's going to be that much and I'm not saying that necessarily as a criticism because God knows it worked in Infinity War but there has to be a bit of that there has to be a bit of getting the pieces in place to actually tell the story you know because we haven't left all these people standing together at the end of the last film or any last film so everybody has to meet everybody else I mean the closest we've had I guess was when the New Avengers looked out and saw a ship coming.
32:57That's the closest we've had to these groups meeting up properly. So it's a lot of, you know, not world building, but world shifting to get everybody in one place. Or several places.
33:11Chris Hewitt:Jimbo, what do you think about the FF? What brings them to Earth 616? Well, I mean, what brings them? I guess, well, they're explorers, aren't they? And there are any reason why they might take to the cosmos because they seem to do it at the drop of a hat and then got, I don't know, sucked into a wormhole, fly too close to a sun. Who knows how they ended up skipping dimensions? Or maybe there's more purpose to it. Maybe they're pursuing Doom. Obviously, Doom is historically a Fantastic Four villain. It would make sense if he maybe originates from their neck of the woods. But then, Alan, you talked about time travel.
33:42When we see the group shot, which is the next shot in this trailer, what looks like a flux capacitor is on the screen behind the Fantastic Four. So maybe they all just need to get up to 88 miles an hour and that is how they go back in time and they get Cap and they bring him here.
33:53Chris Hewitt:Well, there's got to be some timey-mimey shit anyway, right? Because the FF are in the 60s. Well, is it the 60s or it's a different world, isn't it? It is. Time has progressed differently there. Yeah. It is the 60s. But it's a different universe. So, like, in the same way that time passes between different planets when you're travelling, like, any amount of time could pass when they travel between dimensions. Yeah, maybe they went close to Gigantua or whatever it is. Exactly. And I thought that Back to the Future was canonically bullshit, according to Endgame. So I'm very confused by the flux capacitor, to be honest.
34:27Chris Hewitt:We have next up, we have a shot of Sam, Sam Wilson, Anthony Mackie, of course, the Captain America of this universe now. We have a shot of Sebastian Stan. standing next to Sebastian Stanis, old pal, Bucky Barnes, and alongside them, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang, aka Ant-Man. If I were to make a bold and wild prediction based on this trailer, here is another one you can clip and play it back to me when I'm proven wrong in five months' time. I don't think Ant-Man makes it out of this movie. Why? Why are you killing Ant-Man? Why are you hating on Ant-Man? Because he was the star of Ant-Man and the Wasp, Quantumania.
35:13Chris Hewitt:But you love that movie. I love that movie, but I think he might be punished by Disney shareholders. There's going to be a scene where he's actually beaten by a mob of Disney shareholders. And unfortunately, he can't become small enough to escape their wrath. And so he goes, I don't know. I just have a feeling that there's going to be some casualties in this one. Yeah, I think so too. And I think those casualties will stick. Unlike, of course, with Infinity War. although some people died in Infinity War and did stick, like Vision, who we never saw again in the MCU, or Loki, who we never saw again in the MCU, or Gamora, who we never saw again in the MCU.
35:48Chris Hewitt:I think there might be some people who actually die, and Ant-Man in this one seems like an interesting choice to include. What you're saying is we should set up some kind of Empire Deadpool for Avengers Team's day. He hasn't been announced yet, has he? Why is Thor crying? Oh, Thor, he helped me. Fiver on the Falcon. I think that is possible especially given the shot of Scott hugging Cassie for the last time maybe or maybe just a time has Cassie dyed her hair? no she was blonde in Quantumania I'd completely forgotten that I remember every frame of Quantumania I'm sure you do alright so then they go through alright here's the big shot we have the big group shot this is kind of interesting because obviously as you mentioned and Bucky is standing with Sam and Scott there.
36:42We assume Bucky's kind of, whether by hook or by crook, or whether by volition or just by chance, Bucky's kind of with the new Avengers. But those two we think are maybe aligned with the old Avengers or the rival Avengers or Sam's Avengers or whatever the heck we're calling the two groups, we don't know. So Bucky would seem to be the kind of connective tissue. He'd be the bridging person if there is a bridge to be built, potentially. Maybe?
37:07Chris Hewitt:Question mark? I think so. Although in this wide shot, he is standing with the New Avengers. Yes, yeah. You can see him, but he's behind Hannah John-Chamon's ghost. Yeah. And the FF are at the wall with kind of what looks like, yes, James, the flux capacitor. But I was also wondering if it might be some sort of diagram of incursionosity, impending incursion-ness. Because if you look as well behind Reed Richards, there's what seems to be a countdown. which is interesting. That's obviously to the Avengers Doomsday release. You see it at the end. That's what that is. In Infinity Fission. We know that this movie takes place in one day.
37:48Chris Hewitt:It's called Doomsday. Obviously, Infinity War didn't take place over a huge amount of time either, but there does really, really seem to be a ticking clock element to this that there maybe wasn't with Infinity War. So we have the new Avengers. I hate that name. The Thunderbolts. We have the Thunderbolts. We have US Agent. We have John Walker. We have Red Guardian in the worst getup. All the best. I know it's a gag, but oh my God. And we have Yelena Belova. We have Ghost. And we have Bucky. Then we have the FF. And then we have Sam Wilson and Scott Lang. Now, is that it for the Avengers? Like Sam's team of Avengers?
38:31Chris Hewitt:So you think Thor is on? I think Thor has been off world and is like, what the fuck are you doing? We just need a team. Get it together, guys. But if he comes down, because at the end of Thunderbolts, you remember they talked about Sam's team. If Sam's team is just him and Scott lying, that ain't much of a team. I'm saying that he also has some other people that we haven't seen in this shot. I think Shang-Chi is his team. I think that makes sense. I just love the idea that Sam only has a team with one other person, and they maybe have a treehouse, and a clubhouse, and you have to knock on the bottom of the treehouse and say the password before you're allowed in.
39:05oh that's so sweet and it makes sense because you know
39:09Chris Hewitt:the first Avenger that Scott ever met was Sam Wilson so it all makes sense it all comes together so we think this is in the Watchtower and they're all spreading the word of Jehovah which is lovely then Thor goes I fought with many warriors in my time they were far stronger than all put together and they died They died facing enemies and threats to scare me far less than this one. It's a cog biter. What is going on with Hemsworth's accent in this? Look, you know the way that you and I both, Chris, sometimes pick up the accents of people that we are around rather than sticking true to our roots?
39:50We're chameleons, Helen.
39:51Chris Hewitt:We're chameleons. Maybe it's the same with Thor. Maybe he has been spending a bit of time with space Australians and therefore has picked up a space Australian. I don't think you should bully him. I think it's a Thor point. very good very good so he does say he says i fought with many warriors in my time they were far stronger than all of us put together and they died who's he talking about his dad heimdall i don't know they were far stronger than all of us put together is he talking about wanda like who's who's properly dead in this universe by now tony wanda splatasha romanoff he means presumably means in my like as guardians like home yeah and you know and the warriors three i mean the warriors three were a bit yeah i mean if you get a point that like it's like we need a miracle let's get cap who and all respect to cap but he's not exactly fucking a level powered is he he's not cosmic is he and i think i think thor is is look he's he's trying to make a point he may not be speaking literally he may not be saying this person literally had more powers than everyone in this room put together right now he may be just paying his tributes as it were to the Warriors 3 or Odin or Frigga or any of the other millions of people that he has personally lost or killed he makes a good point though because this is not the most powerful line up of heroes in the MCU is it it's the B team it's definitely the B team you know who's missing from this shot who is powerful and who isn't in the trailer What we know is in the movie, Sentry.
41:30Chris Hewitt:So unless that's him, but I'm pretty sure it's Bucky who is standing beside Ghost in this shot here, the wide shot. So we're not seeing Bob Reynolds. We're not seeing Lewis Pullman's Sentry, who, as we have speculated about in the past, might also be someone that Doom is drawn towards. Because if he is siphoning power, then the Sentry is a good place to start. So, yeah, might be something like that. Who knows? Moving on, we see some other people. So, do you remember 2022? That was a fun time. And we were introduced in Black Panther Wakanda Forever to Namor, the Submariner, played by Tenoch Huerta.
42:16Chris Hewitt:And he is back, back, back, sitting on the throne of Atlantis itself. Tenoch Khan. Oh, that place. Yes. it's all very very exciting and we see of course Ashuri played by Letitia Wright and we see the King of Wakanda played by Winston Duke which is very exciting and then there's something he says they died facing enemies and threats and so we see the Black Panther and the Dwarf Milaje maybe taking arms against a sea of troubles but maybe also just about to throw down yes uh oh and also we see in this shot there's a wide shot of ben grim so at some point they must go to what's the name of it again james tala khan tala khan yes well we've already seen in the previous trailer and we see again a little bit here of shuri and the wakandans meeting the fantastic four shaking hands with ben so that makes sense yeah and if you look at that shot which appears to take place in a desert, but there's a sort of wall of water in the distance, which also maybe suggests Namor, right?
43:31Mm-hmm.
43:32Chris Hewitt:Yeah, I really like that wrinkle. The idea that this is the seabed, but the Atlanteans or the Tanakh... What's it called? Is it Talacanians is what they kind of refer to themselves? Yeah, because, you know, Atlantis. The Talacanians can control the water, so they've pushed the sea back to create this meeting spot. Moses style. Just book a team's virtual room for fuck's sake. Or do this on Riverside if you like water so much. Jesus Christ. So then we see a... I can't make out what this statue is. We're cutting to the world in which Thor meets Doom and I don't know what this statue is. I've been going sort of frame by frame trying to figure out.
44:12It looks like it's someone with a bag. And I honestly wondered if it was meant to be Star-Lord. Genuinely, it looks like he's got like a sling bag around his Could just be a messenger Deliveroo Maybe it's Joseph Gordon-Levitt in that film I hated I don't know, but it just That's the only thing that I thought I could make out I may be completely wrong
44:36Chris Hewitt:Interesting I'm looking at it right now I can't see anything I can see it I think the guy's got his arm in a sling, whoever it is So I don't know Anyway, so then he's firing up Stormbreaker And there's Doom in the background and then we have a shot of what I thought initially was Doctor Strange's Cyclops. Yeah, I thought it was Bleecker Street. Yeah. I did too. It doesn't seem to be. I think it is. X-Mansion. Yeah, the X-Mansion. The X-Mansion. Exploding. Because I suppose that would make sense because we cut straight to Cyclops and then Gambit, don't we? What I like about this trailer, and I like this about the first one as well, the first series of four trailers, is that, yes, we're going to get a lot of shots of people standing in front of the green screen.
45:15Chris Hewitt:And my God, we get our fill of that in this trailer. But this is really well shot. And you do get a sense that a lot of this stuff was shot on sets. And a lot of the shot was set on, was shot on, you know, locations where they could control paparazzi access. So they actually do go outside for quite a bit of it. And, you know, the X-Mansion is an actual set that they were blowing up. It wasn't just, all right, now, James Morrison, you stand there. We'll fill in the background later on. Which, you know, there's, which is, can be a malaise in the MCU. yeah um i i i i don't know how i mean it's hard to make out at this point it's all quite dark and um dusty but we are seeing it you know even a tv screen is only so big so um hopefully it'll be a bit clearer as well when we get to the finished film but yeah it's good it's good to have sets as much as possible i feel like the odyssey showed us that quite recently yes uh we get a shot of James Marsden as Cyclops in classic costume, about to fire up his optic beams through his Pfizer.
46:21Chris Hewitt:And we don't really get a good look at him, so we can't tell whether he's been de-aged. What do you think? Well, given that they haven't de-aged Stuart or McKellen, I'm guessing not. I think you're just thinking of the fact that James Marsden hasn't aged very well. I was about to say, he looks pretty identical now. So you're absolutely fine. I love that he's wearing classic x-men gear though that's that that gives me the warm and fuzzies yeah yes indeed uh also i've just remembered another another at least one other person who's not in the trailer who was announced and alan coming as nightcrawler is not in this trailer uh but we do get channing tatum as gambit yes yes we do more a versus x stuff as well so it does seem that there's definitely something going on there because there's a thematic point isn't it whenever we see x-men they do seem to be stirring shit up interesting in this film are they the ones who've recruited by doom maybe it seems to be what this trailer is implying i would think or they just have a number of different barnys on multiple fronts it may be yeah it could be the classic misunderstanding thing that they have in comics you know it could be that um they don't have to have been recruited also that three um you know the the flex capacitor thing the three things with the lines does that mean that there's only maybe three realities incursing on each other in this film?
47:41Is it just going to be sort of Fantastic Four reality, X-Men reality, and, you know, MCU classic?
47:48Chris Hewitt:That would make sense. Are those the only worlds we have to deal with? Like, are we waiting for other incursions or is it just three? That would make sense if those were the three universes that were about to, like, collide and clash into each other because it does feel to me like the X-Men are not in the Fantastic Four's reality. Otherwise we would have heard something about that. Right, yeah. There's so many questions about this. What iteration of the X-Men is this? It's obviously not an iteration that we're used to, I don't think. But hence the presence of Gambit. How is Channing Tatum going to attack this role?
48:26Chris Hewitt:His role in Deadpool Wolverine was played almost entirely for laughs. We're talking about accents, impenetrable accents. I reckon it'll be a sort of a Cajun accent, but maybe dial down a bit. Yeah, that would make sense. Otherwise, it does become a little bit comedy. Yeah. I think this is fun. I'm excited to see Shang-Chi back as well. Like, how delightful is that? Hey, look, they remembered that Shang-Chi exists. That's nice. He's my boy. I'm so excited about this. As you know, I've said this before, we should have been up to our balls in Shang-Chi sequels by now, or at least Shang-Chi appearances.
48:58I think it was just hard to contact. I mean, they rang him ten times, just couldn't pin him down.
49:02Chris Hewitt:When you get home, give us ten rings to let us know you're safe. Oh, boy. So there he is. He's fighting Gambit in the X-Mansion. I'm looking for other clues. I'm sure other people doing breakdowns like this have gone, well, if you see, you'll zoom in. And there's a little bit here, which is taken from the comic book that came out in 1978. We're like, we don't see anything. We're missing it. But here's the thing that I find interesting, because the next scene is Loki looking at his ID, and it's got Idrisil on the back of his badge, which is kind of cool. Because obviously, last time we saw Loki, he was a fucking tree.
49:34so what is he retired like what's happened aren't you supposed to be pinning together all reality i don't think he has to physically like apart from anything else he can manifest like however he wants he's always been able to do that right we've seen sort of shades of loki in one world while he's stuck somewhere else um so if he's part of the world's tree presumably he can appear in any world he wants and any reality that he wants
49:58Chris Hewitt:one would think i feel obviously the end of loki season two uh spoilers for this we assume you've seen all this shit we assume you're as up to date as we are at the end of loki season two did seem to suggest that that was where he was for eternity that was it he was stuck yeah um but timey wimey shit maybe this isn't that loki maybe this is yeah timey wimey shit could be a different loki to me i think it's most like it's the same loki but he can make short appearances for short times and he can sort of you know he's always been able to conjure visions of himself he can send out visions to check what's happening in person and not rely on any carys id just to prove who he is in case he needs to buy drinks it's a fiddle toy you know it's totally fine i think i think this might be honestly he genuinely could be reporting to his brother on what the hell is going on it could also just be some vision shit and i'm not talking vision with a capital v there as in the character i'm talking vision as in you know some woo-woo shit goes down in people's dreams and people's minds.
50:56Loki and Thor have both been involved in or had visions in the past. So it makes a certain amount of sense if he's just, you know, reporting into his brother through the astral plane or similar.
51:09Chris Hewitt:I don't know. I think there's some, I think the TVA are involved big time in this somehow, and I don't really know how. I'm excited to find out. I'm also excited to see this iteration of Loki, who is more, I guess, straight up, if not heroic, then certainly anti-heroic than any version we've had before. So how's that going to fit in? If the multiverse is the creation of essentially everything Loki did at the TVA, which was, we are not going to have one sacred timeline, we're just going to let them all run loose, and I'm essentially going to hold them together so that the universe doesn't fall apart.
51:47That was where we left Loki, again, spoilers, at the end of season two, as I understood it. So if Doom is now trying to collapse some of those realities, that would put TVA and Loki personally very much on the side of the heroes. Right?
52:06Chris Hewitt:One would think, although obviously the TVA stand outside that. So if the multivorists were extinguished tomorrow, it wouldn't affect the TVA. I don't understand how that works, but that apparently is how it works. Yeah, that has always been the case, certainly before. Whether that's changed since Loki took control of the timelines, we don't know, but presumably not. But the TVA have always been people with a sense of mission. Whatever you think of their mission, they have had a mission. And there's no indication that they don't still have a mission now that it's Loki's multiverse rather than the single sacred timeline.
52:41so I don't necessarily think that that's a bad thing and I think it would be really disappointing for Loki's personal arc if he was suddenly a bad guy or aligned with Doom
52:51Chris Hewitt:I don't think he will be I don't think he will be I think that wouldn't be interesting for Hiddleston to play for one thing and we need that scene don't we we need the scene that was promised in Infinity War the sun will shine on us again brother and also just like him trying to convince Thor that he really means it this time that's come on we need some comedy in this film and that could be very funny will they try send help they probably will it's on disney plus it's very very good uh one of sam is it send help or get help what's the get help get help will they try get help because i think that could really work on doom i would definitely go for that get help and then they just throw what he throws loki a doom and yeah exactly that yeah uh all right so then we have a shot of uh shuri uh in this meeting place that the atlanteans uh seem to have uh sorted out which is very nice of them uh she's walking along okay so here's okay i can't identify one of the characters in this shot this is the wide shot of the fantastic four um and so it's the thing it's sue storm it's bucky it's Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres, aka the new Falcon, meeting M 'Baku, Shuri, and some of the Dormelage.
54:10Chris Hewitt:Next to Falcon is someone who seems to be wearing an Avengers-emblazoned coat. Is it Ghost? Is that not Ghost, because she often wore a hood? That's what I'm wondering, but we can't see her face. We can see her bob kind of thing. It's not blonde, so it's not Yelena. I'm assuming it's Ghost, but it is hard to tell. Yeah, I read it as Ghost. So what's happening here then? So if the Fantastic Four, so this maybe disabuses the notion that Doom recruits the New Avengers, because why would the Fantastic Four, who are presumably anti-Doom, aligned with
54:55Chris Hewitt:Bucky and the new Avengers slash Thunderbolts. Also Falcon being here, Joaquin Torres is Falcon presumably he's a part of Sam's Avengers team as well so maybe they've all come together at this point. An absolutely essential part. Essential. He's great for a recon. He's great at recon. Alright let's move on. So then we've got Mr. Fantastic with probably Yelena, although it might be about to be Mystique, but probably Yelena in this shot. With their robot, by the way, in behind them. And then we have Mystique turning into Yelena and fighting her. Yeah. Yelena on Yelena action. Steady. This is Rebecca Romijn, of course, appearing as Mystique for the first time since when?
55:46Chris Hewitt:2006? X-Men The Last stand? I think so. Wasn't there a cameo in First Class? That's right. Oh, yes, that's right. She turns into her, doesn't she? When she's in bed, what if I look like this? When she's trying to seduce Fazzbender. And everyone goes, that's who she is. That's funny. Alright, so then she's fighting... And I hope she's not an X-Man, because I'm sorry, this is one of my big issues with the First Class Averse. I don't like Mystique is an X-Man. Mystique is not an X-Man. She is a villain. She should be a villain. And yeah, I just want her to be a bad guy. Let her freak flag fly. So then it's Yelena versus Yelena.
56:31Chris Hewitt:Then we have Charlie, X and Magneto. And that's the shot from the previous trailer where they're like, oh, it looks like this is the end for us, Charles. Yes, it does. And then they're dead. And then we have... Not before they've held hands. Can we just have a moment for the hand-holding, please? And they're still waiting for Godot to turn up. That fucking Godot never shows up. And then we have Scott Lang. In his last moments alive. Kissing Cassie goodbye before he dies in a hail of bullets. Yes, a hail of tiny bullets. A hail of bullet ants, maybe.
57:10Chris Hewitt:Yeah, and there's his daughter, who is, of course, Sprite. code name Sprite and you can't spell Sprite without RIP so it's all coming together then something in Thor's Thor's talking about everything they sacrifice there's also the hug between the two storms so Thor all this time has been doing a lovely voice over and they'll be like don't worry we'll fix it in post we'll get your British accent before we put the trailer out. And then the deadline came and went, and he's just like, fuck it, no one's going to notice. Anyway, everything they sacrificed will be for nothing if we do not stand together.
57:51Chris Hewitt:Throw another doom on the barbie. Put aside your petty squabbles and presume nothing except this. If you return, you will return as brothers and sisters. And then we cut to, oh my God, the brother, Johnny Storm, and the sister, Sue Storm. And she's presumably at this point close to meeting Namor who's going boom chugga wow wow and getting his getting his like his horny on right because he likes Sue Storm in the comic books does old Namor and when she's nodding at Shuri it's a Shuri thing she does the Wakandan salute which is nice then we cut to Sam Wilson doing something in a room is this the X-Mansion do you think?
58:38I mean I guess if we're assuming it's not Dr. Doom's house and everyone's just looking for him question if this is the X-Mansion
58:50Chris Hewitt:and the X-Mansion or the Avengers, Sam Wilson's Avengers including Shang-Chi are attacking them, how do they get there? Well if there's an incursion can they not just step over? Yeah I think the incursion, I don't know I don't know if it worked like that Well there was a certain amount of just moving from one to the other in Multiverse of Madness wasn't there? Admittedly I haven't got that far on my rewatch so it's hard to say In order to move between multiverses they would need someone who has the power to move effortlessly between multiverses. Someone like, oh I don't know America Chavez Okay She could be around.
59:33Who Marvel have absolutely remembered as part of the MCU but also like if there is an incursion and the worlds are beginning to touch they can just travel right
59:43Chris Hewitt:yeah sure I'm intrigued let's go with that alright so then we have Gambit doing another one of his flips he does a superhero landing he's fighting oh hang on in that shot just before he drops his big cane we see some more figures let me see if I can stop this precisely there's a member of the Fantastic Four there probably Reed there's someone in the background looks like Red Guardian
1:00:16Chris Hewitt:might not be but looks like it is I'm going to go full screen I'm going full screen on this that looks like Red Guardian to me so and then behind behind Gambit this is a shot where Gambit has somersaulted off the top of the balcony and he lands Yeah, he's about to smash his staff down and hit people with a wave of energy. And behind Gambit is Sam Wilson, because you can see his shield. There is a person wearing largely white. It might be Mystique, actually, now think about it. Might be Mystique. And then we have, it looks like Reed. Reed and it would be Shang-Chi all being knocked around and then I wonder if they have to go to the X-Men's world just before it gets destroyed and then they have to meet these people and clearly some of these X-Men will come back with them right?
1:01:17Chris Hewitt:I know we kind of hand waved the whole mutants in the MCU thing but there has to be like a kind of base of mutancy in the MCU going forward you know the good way to do that is to bring some of these guys across with them I don't know maybe I don't know if that's how I don't know if that's how that happened I still think this is the last we see of these incarnations of the X-Men interesting interesting Sue Storm big force field looking unhappy we talked about the the Cyclops big blasty thing but what about the legs in the background? The giant legs? I've missed those again. Yeah. Okay. They're just before Sue looking unhappy.
1:02:04Chris Hewitt:Oh, I see them now. Yeah. That's Sentinel, that's right. It's got to be. Looks like. Did Doom have Sentinel-sized Doom bots? Or is it? Hang on. Could it be Ant-Man? Could it be Giant-Man just before he becomes Giant-Corpse? Oh, boy.
1:02:23Chris Hewitt:Possibly. that kind of would make sense, right? Okay, then we have Sue and then we have Namor flying around looking a lot like Carl Urban so much so it threw me completely when I first saw the trailer Oh my god, it's Billy Butcher It's the ultimate crossover What's he doing here? He's flying around I don't know what he's doing there maybe he's helping get the water around then we have Thor versus Doom and I was looking around here trying to look at this arena looking for clues like there's something beside Doom in this wide shot as Thor goes flying up into the air I thought is that a pram? Has he taken Franklin?
1:03:06Chris Hewitt:But I honestly can't tell what it is but this barren desolate wasteland then Thor obviously hits Doom and there we go Doom seems to have some sort of magic sigils on his Yeah I thought that as well His glove Because he's very into his magic as well isn't he He is He's quite Wiccan Yeah and to be fair There are the sort of The skeletons of what could have been trees And it is possible it could be Like our world and just really fiery Like the end of Endgame So it doesn't have to be an early world It just felt like it was to me We'll see Then we get our first shot of Doom's mask Like properly His eyes malevolent green looking unlike Tony Stark's as he faces off against Thor.
1:03:58Chris Hewitt:And then we cut to, we're going to need a miracle, and now it comes Chris Evans, and that's where we began. So, 20 minutes, we said this would take. One hour later, hopefully we have gone through that trailer to everyone's satisfaction. Where do you think that Thor-Doom confrontation comes? Is that a climactic thing or is that early in the day to tip him off that Doom is a force to be reckoned with. Yeah, to me, I kind of assumed it was an early thing and it was after that that he comes back telling everybody, hey, this guy's serious. We've got to worry about him. It's interesting that the meeting with Cap, it looks like a spaceship, right?
1:04:35It looks like they're in space.
1:04:38Chris Hewitt:Interesting, yeah. Yeah, I did wonder that or wonder that. What sort of spaceship? It looks like a Fantastic Four spaceship because it's white with a blue stripe. so I'm saying it's fantastic for tech but then why isn't he with them when they seem to arrive on earth? this is a good question is this a vision as well? I hope there's no visions in this I really do no visions oh god I really don't want any visions apart from vision I like visions sure vision would be great look I'm not saying it's all visions all the time I'm just saying there are moments when that kind of shit happens and it makes sense and it moves the story forward true but I also think that was mainly in Age of Ultron because Joss Whedon was, and how can I say this, running out of ideas and didn't know what to do with Thor and so had him have some handy visions.
1:05:28I think a lot of that was not necessarily his choice from what we've read. It came from other places. But yeah, anyway. Look, I think it looks, I'm excited. The countdown's terribly helpful. Let's us know how long we've got left. although also like four months until christmas that doesn't make sense that i better get some shopping done huh uh seriously yeah some of us have got plans to make man do you think santa has a countdown clock just like this one hundred percent yeah yeah santa doomsday what's he doing during all this like he could be helping santa he's a bit like the tva he's neutral he's switzerland
1:06:12Chris Hewitt:he doesn't give a shit he absolutely shouldn't be neutral come on he could be throwing Lego under Doom's feet really slowing him down that would be amazing see it in Infinity Vision which is what is Infinity Vision exactly is this is this some a reminder that we liked Infinity War I don't know yeah we didn't get IMAX Doom got IMAX so now we have Infinity Vision which is like normal cinema but it never ends. A bit like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you could argue. And on that note, that is it for this Avengers Doomsday trailer breakdown special. We may have more to talk about next week when I return to Blighty after San Diego.
1:06:57Chris Hewitt:It's very, very exciting. But on a level of one to squee, where are we for this movie? And did this trailer shift the needle in either direction for you both? James, let's start with you. I'm pretty high squee at this point, it has to be said. And yeah, I think it did. I was pretty excited to begin with, but this gave me the kind of like chills, like Infinity era chills, which I've not had from an MCU project in some time. Don't get me wrong, I firmly believe that Spider-Man is likely to be very good, but this made me very, very excited for the sheer scope and scale. But also, there is a darkness to this trailer that is very, to me, reminiscent of Infinity war and doomsday and none of the other films like there's a there's a sense of weight of gravitas of consequence to it and i've really missed that in the mcu so yeah i'm i'm very very excited yeah i think it's um dark is right i mean physically dark to look at that too um and also kind of it's the idea of our fate of people we like turning on each other is not great i think it's interesting that at the moment we we don't see established characters fighting which we thought we kind of would right where we're kind of expecting sort of fisticuffs to to be thrown between two rival avengers teams for example we don't see any of that what we do see is just a versus x and name namor and his people versus wakandans which can't be a massive uh massive surprise so that's kind of an interesting wrinkle here but um yeah look i'm excited i'm i'm excited to see the x-men i know and love or some of them back and uh and see how that folds into the the regular MCU.
1:08:39Chris Hewitt:All right. I am hugely excited about this. There are caveats, of course, that this wasn't the original plan. They've improvised a lot very effectively in the MCU. They've rolled with the punches really, really brilliantly over the years. But the plan, of course, is that this would be Avengers of the Kang Dynasty, and this has all changed. The Russos were not meant to be involved, and now they're involved, and Steve McFeely was not meant to be involved, and now he's involved, that Downey was not about to be playing Doctor Doom and now he is. And there's so much going on here. There's so many characters in this and they've got so much story to tell.
1:09:13Chris Hewitt:And they have to make it feel like Infinity War, but not be Infinity War and not just ape the beats of that movie. Like, I expect this movie to have a downbeat ending, but how do you do that without doing what they did with Infinity War? Unless you have people repeatedly refer to Scott Lang's Lifeless Corpse, I don't really know what you're going to do. If we were, yeah, I'm really, really massively, massively excited. I'm excited to go see this with James on the 18th of December. He'll squeeze it in in between a few wings of Dune Part 3, of course. It's a very, very good trailer. We still are no closer to getting any idea on the plot of this movie.
1:09:53Chris Hewitt:And I think that is something that they will have to address over the next few months. Part of me even hopes they don't. Like, I'd love to go into this near blind without any idea what the hell's going on. That would be very exciting. Maybe you're right. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm thinking of someone who has to write a feature about this at some point. And I'm slightly terrified. I wouldn't want to be that guy. Gosh, imagine how hard that would be. We're going to need a miracle. There's no question about it. Anyway, all that is in the future. Right now, I have to edit this. It's a good job. It's a tight 20.
1:10:31Chris Hewitt:Tight 20. Hopefully we didn't have any libelous bits, so I'll just throw it up mostly as it was. But in the meantime, all that remains is to say goodbye to my two colleagues of such lethal cunning, who will be in charge of the podcast this week while I am in San Diego. So don't fuck it up. No incursions, please, Helen or James. No promises. Toodaloo. Bye. And it's goodbye for me as well. I'm off to edit this. It is the toughest edit with which I have been fest. Thanks for listening. See you next time. Bye bye.

So, there we were, the Empire Podcast team, going about our daily duties this afternoon when suddenly it dropped. And by it, we mean the trailer for Avengers Doomsday, the movie that sees Robert Downey Jr. and the Russo Brothers return to the MCU after an extended absence, and bring Doctor Doom and destruction with them. It was something we couldn't ignore, so Chris Hewitt, Helen O'Hara, and James Dyer teamed up (virtually) for what they said would be a brief trailer breakdown. 20 minutes, tops. Didn't quite work out that way, as this 71-minute long special shows. Enjoy the waffling, rampant speculation, and bits where our heroes try to squint at a blurry freeze frame.
