In short

The hosts and guests discuss Avengers Endgame Encore in IMAX, focusing on four post-credits sequences (plus one pre-credits moment) that set up Avengers: Doomsday, including Loki’s “door knock” scene, Bruce Banner underground, TVA incursions, and the Tony Stark anvil/mask callback.

Guests

Helen O’Hara and Amon Warman join host Chris Hewitt. They’re regular Empire Podcast contributors; they attend the Leicester Square Cineworld screening together.

Key claims

The extra footage is only a small fraction of the film’s runtime but feels “worth it” as a bridge to Doomsday. The Steve/Peggy ending is jarring but enjoyable once understood. “You’re all living stolen lives” is treated as a multiverse-wide theme tied to incursions and timeline damage. Doom is speculated to be collecting people (possibly including Hulk) and targeting Loki/TVA readings.

Notable examples

Steve and Peggy’s time-travel kiss interrupted by Loki; Banner two miles underground with Doom; TVA panic over incursions; Tony making the Iron Man mask echoed by a new mask-maker.

14Hello pod, I'm Chris Hewitt and welcome to the latest in our series of spoiler special podcasts And this one is dedicated to a little film I like to call Avengers Endgame. What? But Chris, didn't you guys do like a thousand spoiler specials, including a live show dedicated to Avengers Endgame when it came out in 2019? Well, yes, we did. So consider this our Avengers Endgame spoiler encore. That's right, because we have just been to the cinema. We have just been to the Cineworld Leicester Square to watch Avengers Endgame Encore. And by we, of course, I mean me and my two colleagues of such lethal cunning, Helen O 'Hara.

01Hello. And Amon Warman. Hello. How are you both? Good. Yeah, good. All the better for spending the morning with Endgame. All the better for spending£78 of my own money, which is a lot of fun. Very, very good. By the way, you both owe me£26. What? So, yes, that works. So, yes. What did you think of Avengers Endgame Encore? Obviously, we're here to talk about the four crucial post-credits sequences that we saw in the IMAX version. Didn't see it in Infinity Vision. I wonder if there's anything lurking around in Infinity Vision that wasn't for the IMAX people. But what did we make of it? Hellspells.

45I mean, look, it is by a percentage of what you've spent, the time you've spent at the cinema. It is a very, I would submit, small percentage of the time that you have spent at the cinema. It is perhaps 2%, I think I'm probably right in saying. Roughly 2 % of your time. So, hang on. Not counting adverts. Okay, so the stuff we saw, the extra stuff. The extra stuff is probably... 2 % of the film, you would say? Yeah. So what does it equate to? Two minutes, roughly? I'm actually allowing more. I'm allowing it to be like four minutes. Yeah. Right? It doesn't feel like four minutes to me. Four minutes of 180...

26I don't want to get bogged down in mathematics here because I want to talk about the content. But is that 2 % of a film? Four minutes of a 183 minute running time? Yeah, it'd be just over 2%, right? 2%, okay. So boil it down into cold, hard cash. I paid£26 for my seat. So 2 % of that is 52p. So that was 52p's worth. Amon, did you get your money's worth from the extra footage that we just saw? Which in case people haven't seen it, I don't know why you're listening to this if you haven't seen it, but if you have, you'll know that there are four-ish. Kind of. Kind of. Depending on how you count. Post-credit scenes that have been put in by the Russos and Marvel to kind of prepare the way for Avengers Doomsday, which is obviously coming in a couple months time and one of them isn't even a post-credits sequence it's a pre-credits sequence which adds or tramples all over depending on your viewpoint the exquisite ending of Avengers Endgame there's another one with Mark Ruffalo's Bruce Banner deep in a subterranean bunker that nobody can get into he says very pointedly before someone does and a third one at the TVA where they're all panicking because there's all sorts of incursions.

43And then the fourth one, Blink and You'll Miss It, where they take Tony banging the anvil, making the Iron Man mask, which was their little way of saying goodbye to Tony at the end of Avengers Endgame. And now we see that it's another person making a mask. But it's the same actor. But it's the same actor. New mask. Same task. Same task. So, did you get your money's worth 52p? More importantly, I would say, we got your money's worth 52p. So I think that's really what's worth focusing on here. So angry. I agree with that. So angry. 78 quid. We are so privileged. We recognize this. We are so privileged to get out to see movies for free.

24And, you know, now and again, I do have to pay to see a movie. But 26 pounds? Are you kidding me? Right now? And then obviously times three, 78 pounds? Oh my God. Anyway, I'm on. Did you get your money's worth? did you enjoy the post-credit sequences? That's what we heard discussed by and large because we've already filled about 12 hours of podcasts talking about Avengers Endgame, which I love 3000, by the way, and still do. Yeah. I enjoyed the post-credit sequences. I was hoping for a little bit more. I didn't even know going in that there were going to be post-credit sequences. I was thinking they would...

00Insert them into the film somehow? Yes. Now, I think that would have been jarring. I thought they were going to maybe restore some deleted scenes. I thought we might get maybe a scene with Tony because there wasn't that scene that they filmed with Tony and older Morgan after he clicks his fingers. I thought maybe we'd get the Natasha and Bruce scene after Bruce clicks his fingers with the Infinity Gauntlet. But we didn't. We didn't do that. And I began to realize as Endgame was barreling along that they weren't going to do that which is why it was such a shock when suddenly Steve and Peggy go in for the kiss and I'm waiting for it to go to the credits.

44A rude knock at the door. A rude knock at the door. And as much as they tried to make Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell look exactly the same as they did in that sequence seven years ago, they don't quite manage it, I think. And there's something about maybe the film stock slightly different. I'm sure they've tried their best. I'm sure they've done. I didn't bump up on that too much. I thought that was okay. Okay. but yeah I mean I was obviously ready to suspend disbelief at that point this yeah so it's kind of a it's a bit end of Back to the Future isn't it you know sort of Doc Brown showing up and saying well not quite saying we got to do something about your kids but not not saying that either as Endgame establishes Back to the Future is a bunch of bullshit so I know that's true that's true I wonder what the composer of Back to the Future thinks about that hey if only he'd been involved somewhere here.

37One Alan Silvestri, of course. Yeah. All right. Should we take them in order? Okay. Let's do it. All right. So I was, I was, I'll be honest, I was jarred by the fact that we suddenly cut to that sequence. And, but I enjoyed that scene for what it was. Once I realized what they were doing, then I enjoyed that scene. And of course, it doesn't, Avengers Endgame exists on its own as an entity. So if you want to see that ending, which I think is a perfect ending for Steve, a happy ending for Steve, if you will. Stop that. Or maybe we're just minutes away from a happy ending for Steve. Then you can, of course, go and see Avengers Endgame in whatever format you want, with the possible exception, of course, of Infinity Vision, which is being saved for Encore and for Doomsday.

25So once I realized what they were doing, I quite enjoyed that scene and it's quite interesting, isn't it, Amon? So the door knocks and you're wondering And who is it? Is it going to be Doctor Doom? There's somebody. You are all living stolen lives. And it wasn't. It was only bloody Loki. So what's happening? I am imagining that he has projected himself. Obviously, he's at the center of everything. He's in the center of Idrisul. He is the god of stories right now. And I'm imagining that Loki is getting the sense of what might be coming with Doom and is projecting himself as kind of an early warning system.

06And he has gone to Steve and Peggy to kind of keep them safe. I'm imagining that he is... Just think about the other trailers and the Super Baby theory that I had. He sees that that may be important. And knowing that the multiverse is collapsing, he's kind of shepherding them away to a safe place so that they don't get mushed up with all the other universes there has been a theory that they're in a different universe so you're saying that that timeline that Steve's in is one of the universes that's going to be splatted so Loki moves them to different universes your theory and then later the baby gets kidnapped we're assuming and then Steve swings into action we're assuming it's possible that makes a certain sense I got more of a warning than a spirited away as it were vibe from that scene but I do want to see what happens next because Steve would obviously be somewhat reluctant to believe anything Loki says true given their history together and you know as much as Loki can say listen this is going to seem weird but I'm actually in the middle of a kind of massive time tree at the moment I've turned over a new leaf a whole bunch of leaves Owen Wilson Owen Wilson turned my life around, you see.

32Wow. And now I'm a good guy, and you can trust that. Yes. And in fact, just to help you out, here is a subscription to Disney +, so you can catch up on my adventures. Of course, this is the 1950s. They won't have Disney+. Oh, my God. Stymied. Stymied at the first hurdle. What a tough one. I am very intrigued to see what happens next in the second part of that conversation. Does it... I mean, the whole timey-wimeyness of this all It's very, very interesting to me. So that is the happy ending that Steve Rogers gets. Not like that, Helen. You absolute, you filth bucket. That's the happy ending he gets at the end of Endgame.

15So my headcanon for Steve's life after that is that he and Peggy lived out their time and Peggy rose to prominence in S.H.I.E.L.D. whereas Steve was kind of behind the scenes, not really letting people see him necessarily because he's quite recognizable. Even in the 1950s or 1960s, people would go, hang on, your ageless husband looks a lot like Steve Rogers. I'm pretty sure I saw him leaping 14 fences in one bound the other day. Oh yes, yes, I do remember that. Probably he grows his incognito beard again. He does. I hope for Peggy's sake. His incognito, maybe that's what it is. Maybe that's what it is.

52He was just on the incredible Marvel disguise that is a baseball cap and nobody will know. No one will see him. But then he just looks like him at a baseball game. Yeah. So he lives his life with Peggy, right? Yeah. And then he times it just right. He remembers the day that he went back in time and he goes to the Avengers compound the day after or maybe a couple of days, maybe even a couple of weeks after they kicked Thanos' ass and just waits for him to disappear for you back to the future again. And then he appears and he just, rather than walking up to them, he does it with style and class.

26He sits down on the bench and waits to be noticed, which I like. A very old age pensioner, isn't it? I'm sitting here and I'm not getting up. Even though I could just walk 10 paces over there, I've earned the right to sit down. To have a sit down. So this ending, this kind of added on ending shifts my perception of that somewhat. I think it shouldn't because I think it doesn't make sense and you shouldn't think about it too much. If I'm perfectly honest. All right. I don't think this is going in the same way that we weren't happy with how exactly Steve lived out his life not doing any heroism between 1950-odd and the present day.

12And it gave us headaches. And we heard that the Russos and the writers didn't even agree on what had happened in the interim either. So we just, I for one, decided to park it and table it and never think about it again. I feel like there's going to be an element of that in Steve's story this time as well. I think we're just going to have to roll with it like Oasis would want. Okay. You going to roll with it, Amon? You going to take your time? You got to say what you say? Don't let anyone get in your way? Because it's all too much, Amon. For me to take? I agree. You got to stand aside. You got to be denied.

50You got to be who you be if you want to be me. Is it me or free? I was about to compliment your lyric recall. Thank you. I think I've got a feeling I've lost inside. Oh, God. I think I'm going to take me away and hide. Okay, okay, enough, enough. Yes, I am going to roll with it. Because, yeah, I'm just recalling all the post-endgame articles and arguments between the writers about the timey-wimey stuff. Nobody could agree with anything, and I'd rather not go back down that path. And yet here we are. But who's to say that the Steve who rocks up on that bench at the Avengers compound and has that conversation with Sam, which again, 10 out of 10, no notes, just generally for the film.

35Amazing. Who's to say that he hasn't already had his Doomsday adventure at that point? He just doesn't mention it. Yeah, it is possible. That is entirely possible. And we may find out that that's what happened. There's all sorts of theories online about is the Steve in Doomsday good Steve, bad Steve, neutral Steve, new Steve, different Steve, and any of those could be true as well. The frustration, joy, whatever you want to call it, of the multiverse is that all things and no things can be true at once, and we won't really know which way they're going until we see it. And maybe not even there, let's be honest.

14But yeah, I think, look, I think it makes sense that Steve is one of the people that you maybe want to reach out to if there's a problem. You know, as Endgame, re-watching Endgame once again demonstrated, he's quite good in a tough spot. He's a useful person to have around. He's good at emerging from the shadows, I think. We didn't even see... Oh, we should have watched Infinity War first. I didn't go back and re-watch Endgame before this, because I didn't want to watch it so close to the screen today. But I wanted to kind of take me by surprise again. I genuinely felt all the feels again. Me too.

46Oh, God. Even early doors when Tony's saying goodbye to Pepper on the spaceship, I was kind of tearing up because, again, I remember that's my headcanon. That speech is what's going through Tony's mind as he actually is dying. It's like, oh, my God. It's an incredible feat. On our way into the studio, we were talking about shows and things that haven't stuck the landing, like Game of Thrones, the ending, and that was in 2019 also. And The Rise of Skywalker, also in 2019. Sorry, Ben Travis, but that did not stick the landing. It didn't get off the ground, to be honest. And this, everything that I had to juggle, everything that it does, action, emotion, humor, I'm still getting that.

30And it lands it with the grace of an Olympic gymnast, honestly. It's really special. And I'm glad I got to be delivered again on the big screen. All right, we have time. And we only have an hour, by the way, to do this because there's a radio show in the studio immediately after us. And apparently they need to go on air live. Rude. Yeah, I was like, guys, we've just seen Endgame Encore. We need to talk about... Portals. Yes, we should talk about portals. We also should talk about three minutes of screen time for about three hours. But I want to interrogate the Stevie-ness of it a little bit more because obviously we know he's coming back now on Doomsday.

06And, you know, Doom has that line because again they showed the trailer for Doomsday just before Encore and he has that line you're all living stolen lives and it keeps cutting to people who are indeed living stolen lives and Steve is one of those people he is living a stolen life and I was also taken by this time around how much damage they do to existing timelines when they go back to get the stones like just little things that seem satisfying in the moment but might actually have genuinely huge repercussions for the multiverse. Thor goes back to Asgard 2013 and leaves with the other Thor's Mjolnir.

50Now, are you saying that doesn't have repercussions? But he goes back to the same exact time, right? Steve does have Mjolnir with him, I guess. Yeah, he brings Mjolnir back. But also, he must re-inject Jane Foster. and that's a bit fucked up I keep saying there's some short films like some Marvel one shots unfortunately these would cost 250 million dollars but the ones I want to see are Steve putting everything back I want to see what happened there and I want to see the 10 minutes between Doctor Strange being revived and him running around with wongers trying to recruit everybody every single person yeah explain what's going on yeah the one which I'd be really intrigued to see that I'm not sure we ever will sadly is Steve returning the Soul Stone and seeing Red Skull as the guide in Warmare.

42That conversation, that scene would be incredible. Yeah. But we're probably not going to do that. That, I think, would probably get Hugo Weaving back in the MCU. Like his niece is now in the MCU. He'd be all over that, I think. Yeah, absolutely. Sure. Make it happen. So the Stevie-ness of it all, just very, very quickly, I think it's fascinating. The Stolen Lives thing, there's also a shot of Cyclops who is living a stolen life because he died, of course, in the X-Men continuity and then was brought back because of the timey-whiminess of Days of Future Past. So, you know, is Doom targeting those people?

16We'll get onto it in a second because the Doom banner one is very interesting. But I've read that rumor as well about Chris Evans perhaps being, you know, the kind of, well, not evil Cap, but the Hell Hydra Cap. Well, that's evil Cap, I guess. That would be evil Cap. That's quite evil. I'm not sure that works I hate it. Yes. Flames, flames on the side of my face. He attracts Mjolnir. And Mjolnir surely wouldn't go to that cap because Mjolnir would go, you're a dickhead, mate. Yeah. Your theory from... I like my theory for that. What's your theory? My theory that that's Loki with Mjolnir. Why would Loki be...

51Because he needs to recruit Thor and he needs to talk to Thor long enough for, you know, like he needs Thor to listen for long enough to take him seriously. Right. So go as Cap, the most trustworthy person around. But why wouldn't he go as Loki? Because Loki is not trustworthy, as far as Thor knows. But Thor, the last time Thor saw Loki, he was very trustworthy. They were brothers. They had reconciled. They've been brothers and reconciled quite a few times. I'm sorry. I'm calling Buncombe. I'm pressing my Buncombe button. Look, it's my pet theory based on absolutely nothing, I'll have you know.

27I think it's the Eternals in disguise. interrupted on their way back to their home planet and finally getting back into the brain. That's what it is. So I'm very, very intrigued by that. All right. Let's talk about the second, the second one, which we've seen these only once. Yes. Feels like a low, low. Listen very carefully. I have seen this only once. And it cost me 26 pounds. Banner. So Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner filming himself two miles below the surface of the planet in some sort of underground lair. It looked a bit like it was connected to Captain America, the film, you know the film, the one we don't like so much.

13Brave New World. There we go. So it looked like it was like that base or similar that he was in, further underground than we saw in that film, but that kind of vibe. And yes, and this is clearly post-brand new day. He's talking about an incident. Yeah. So this must be post-brand-new day, and he's trying to get the Hulk back under control. I definitely agree that it's post-brand-new day. The line that I'm tripping up on a little bit is that he says, it's been over a decade since my last incident. Now, this last incident that we've seen was in brand-new day, which was in MCU. That's what he's referring to.

47Yeah. But it had been over a decade since my last incident. Before that. Because before that, the Hulk was either off-planet or Smart Hulk. Yeah. Professor Hulk. The Hulk's last incident, proper incident on Earth, was Age of Ultron. Well, even Age of Ultron, it wasn't an incident. He was doing what he wanted to do at that point. Well, no, it was an incident. No, but it wasn't like he wasn't... Because he destroyed Johannesburg. Oh, sorry, Age of Ultron. I was thinking Infinity War. Sorry, yes. Age of Ultron is exactly right. Okay. Yeah. To me, that's what he's talking about. Yeah. Got it. I think in my mind, I was thinking the last time we've seen him be that version of the Hulk was in Infinity War, which was 2018.

31But you see, it did say Incident, which does 2015. Okay, makes sense. And also the Infinity War, Ragnarok, Hulk, and Banner have a kind of weird relationship. But anyway, yeah, that line stood out to me as well. But first time around, I haven't seen it the second time around. that was my least favorite of the four well let's just the Doom ones just barely counts yeah so of the three that was my least favorite it felt the clumsiest it felt the clumsiest in terms of the exposition that they gave Ruffalo I'm deep beneath this I'm two miles beneath the surface there's no way the Hulk is getting out well actually he could the Hulk could very easily he could but he might slow him down enough for other people to arrive you know two miles is nothing to the Hulk and no one is going to get in.

22Well, gee, I wonder what's going to happen. And of course, clearly, Doom visits him and says, I've come to collect you. Yes. Now, what does that mean? Well, that does seem to support the whole, you know, stolen people factor, doesn't it? Because when you watch the Doomsday trailer before the film, which we did, there are those very significant shots of people with their babies or children. and then, you know, while Doom is talking about sort of what his plans are. So the collecting thing maybe makes a certain amount of sense and it is maybe how we're going to get X-Men without their universe and that kind of thing.

02But what stolen life is Banner living? I don't think, I think you're too maybe hung up on the stolen life as a time travel thing. I don't think it's just that. I think it's almost more the way that maybe Hawkeye was acting out after the snap. I think it's more maybe, you know, you're all alive and my family are dead. How fucking dare you? So I don't think it's just people who are living on literal borrowed time. I think it might be wider than that. Because also, he's collapsing, we're hearing, thousands of universes. So it's clearly not that clinical. He is clearly not only concerned with people who have time traveled and benefited from it.

46It is clearly bigger than that. It's interesting that you think he's doing that. So you think he's behind the collapse of the multiverse? Well, I think we'll get on to the other post-pandemic scene. We can do it now. We can do it now. But like, in my mind, because we get to a number that 3 ,000 incursions are happening all at once. I love you 3 ,000 incursions. I don't love you 3 ,000 incursions. I'm imagining that that is happening simultaneously with Doom finding where Loki is and attacking him. Because I don't see Loki letting that happen willingly. It's more, in my mind, he's trying to fend off Doom while still trying to hold the multiplayer together.

30But that's too much. And so he's losing sort of strands, big strands at the same time that the TVA is having those readings. Oh, maybe. In my mind, that's how that's happened. But I don't see Loki letting go of that many strands willingly all at once. Why would Doom attack Loki? To absorb his power. Right, okay. I mean, I absolutely get Doom attacking Loki. That seems possible and probable to me. I don't know about the universe collapse being a mere side effect to Doom. I don't know about that, but we'll see. It's more that Loki is trying to hold off to him while still trying to hold off. No, I get what you're saying.

12I just don't know that it's not a little bit more targeted than that. I honestly kind of wanted a line in the TVA episode with Morbius going, you know, I'm going downstairs. Morbius would be a real multiverse guy. With Morbius saying, I'm going downstairs to talk to the big guy or something. Do you know what I mean? I wanted a reference maybe to Loki there, and I thought there would be one more than there was. I liked the employee of all time. That was excellent. That was cute. Of course, Ki-Hui Kwan in there, as well as Obi, Owen Wilson as Mobius. None of those have been announced as cast members in Doomsday, but I think it's fairly obvious now that they're going to be in Doomsday.

49Unless we only see the aftermath, like we saw with Asgard at the beginning of Infinity War. Possibly. Unless we see a sort of depopulated TBA. Possibly. I think it's also fairly obvious now that Mark Ruffalo is going to be in Doomsday, although they have not announced him yet. my feeling is that Doom is collecting Hulk to use him as muscle. That crossed my mind also. Yes. He can... It crossed my mind but I'm also like in our brand new Daysport special we were talking about how hard it is to control the Hulk. Do you think Doom is a person? I guess he could manage it but it'd be difficult. I think if anyone can manage it it would be Victor Von Doom.

38I mean, yes. It could also be that he isn't in Doomsday. It could be that he goes straight to Secret Wars. Congratulations, Dr. Banner. You have gone straight to Secret Wars. Do not pass go. Do not collect£78. Yeah, it's possible. That's all I'm saying. I thought that too, but then why have that post-credit scene here in the lead into Doomsday while saying that this is essential for Doomsday. Well, I mean, they're not trying to just sell one film, they're trying to sell two, number one. And number two, their post-credit stings haven't always been that clinical in phases four and five. I think these ones are.

18These ones are clearly ones that have been shot and written specifically to try and bridge the gap between Endgame and Doomsday, or a brand new day and Doomsday in this case. And I think that's where it's pointed. and I don't I'm with them on this I don't think they would have a post-credit thing that sets up secret wars I think that we're gonna I think it's gonna be a lot of people in Doomsday whose names weren't announced in those chairs we've already had two officially confirmed Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell I think this pretty much confirms Mark Ruffalo I would not be surprised if Cumberbatch Holland the entire country of Holland are in Doomsday at some point It just depends how much they're in doomsday and what doomsday is going to be.

06Because at this point in time, we still don't know. I am beginning to develop theories in my secret lab, two miles underground, that no one can get into. And unfortunately, I can't get out of. So this is now a life model decoy situation. But yeah, theories that I just, I think, there may be I'm feeling a rug pull with Doomsday in the same way there's a five years later rug pull with Endgame I don't mean they're going to repeat the same thing but I think that Doomsday is not the movie that it's being sold as right now I don't really have anything to base that on except pure vibes can I just say by the way I agree actually 60 pounds for a popcorn bucket I know what the fuck yeah literally so they have an Ironfinity gauntlet, whatever we're calling it.

58I like that. Popcorn bucket that was on sale at the cinema where we saw it this morning and I was eyeing it up. I'm going to be honest with you. I was looking at it like it was Cap with a beard. Wow, bloody hell. I was. And then I saw on the screen above the price came up and it was 59.99 English pounds. What the fuck? Who's buying that? Who's buying that? I mean, when we came out of the cinema, all of them were gone. So people were buying it. But they may just have been put away because they were, you know. But I think that the first act of Doomsday is Incursion Palooza. All the universes being destroyed and then leaving us with the three that we have confirmed for Doomsday, which is the X-Men universe, the MCU that we are currently in, and what was the other universe?

Read the full transcript

52Fantastic Four universe. Fantastic Four universe. Dooms universe. Dooms universe. I think all of that happens in the first act of Doomsday. And then we get into the real bulk of the film, which is the three universes and how they're going to deal with Doom. Yeah. This is the problem for them. The challenge maybe with Doomsday and Secret Wars is that they cannot repeat what they've done with Infinity War and with Endgame. that these movies have to be vastly different whilst providing a satisfying experience in their own right with these characters. And again, of course, the challenge, we've talked about this endlessly.

35But watching Endgame again, it was just like, oh my God, the big emotional impact for me comes from the fact that we're so infested in these characters and we're so infested in Tony and Steve and Natasha and the OG Avengers. But even the new breed who are coming into the movie in the portal scene. The audience at that point in time had such affection for T 'Challa. They had such affection for Sam Wilson. They had such affection for Wanda. They had such affection for Doctor Strange. And I have affection. I have a lot of affection for characters like Shang-Chi. But I do wonder that there is Wanda, that there's a lot of heavy lifting to be done with characters.

16Do people have the affection, the residual affection for the Thunderbolts that perhaps they should have had going into Doomsday? They have some, but not nearly as much, I would say. And similarly, even with the Fantastic Four, who I think have to be a bit and look to be a big part of Doomsday and are not quite so embedded in the culture, which, you know, is weird and sad and strange because they are a big part of the Marvel Universe and we want them to be a big part of this, but they haven't just had that time to kind of bed in. Yeah, that is the biggest hurdle for Doomsday to overcome. Yeah. Now, it was a hurdle, of course, that the first Avengers movie had as well.

53I mean, you know, only Tony had been in more than one MCU movie by that point. We didn't even call it the MCU at that point. You know, it was Steve Rogers' second movie. It was Thor's second movie. It was Ruffalo's first movie, but the Hulk's second movie. And they all overcame those barriers. Natasha's second movie was Clint's second movie, kind of just about. Technically. Yeah. And they overcame those barriers to deliver an absolutely cracking movie. So it can be done. But they also have to introduce Doom, and they have to make that work. And my God, I've said this before, I do not envy them.

28I think I'm confident that they'll do it, they'll pull it off, because they wouldn't have done it if they didn't feel like they could. And if they didn't feel like they could deliver something different as well from Infinity War and Endgame. I don't think they can just do that ending of Infinity War again, where Doom is triumphant and the heroes are defeated. Well, this is because I'm thinking more about you're saying that something, they need to do something different and something more is going on. Or maybe let's just do the same thing. It worked last time. Why not? It's interesting. I'm really rustling here.

00Sorry, I'm getting some sweets out of my pocket because I'm rustling. At least probably cost me 15 quid. Are you serious? No, probably. I know some wild prices for sweets are ridiculous for them. but thinking about what you're saying one of the more interesting lines that we've gotten in these trailers so far is Doom saying something is coming, something we might not be able to deter what if the different thing is Doom maybe temporarily at least teaming up with a universe's set of heroes in order to deter an incursion could that be the different thing that they might be doing here or something else entirely that they haven't told us about i mean maybe it's maybe it's doom trying to force everyone into line to fight the thing this time and that's what makes him the bad guy this time is that he is trying to basically take power to fight whatever has him scared in this theory um either take power himself or collect the people um to use them um and then the thing that he is actually scared of takes everybody and puts them in Secret Wars next time so Doom's this film's big bad but for good reason and I can't I'm not this is not like endorsement okay this is just like maybe this is theoretical but like maybe that's maybe that's the plan maybe so Doom is on the side of the I mean no because Doom's still being a dick about it right I think it's really important to realize that it is not okay, even if you're scared of something big and off in the distance, it is not okay to steal people's powers and abilities.

49It is not okay to kidnap their children. It is not okay to mind control them. If that's a thing, we're going down, I don't know. None of this is okay even if you're scared. This is a really important thing to understand. In the same way that, once again, I was sitting through that film today going, Thanos is evil and also wrong. Like it is not going to work. It is evil and also wrong. It's so funny. For a brief second there, for a very brief second, you sounded like James Dyer and then Helen O 'Hara came back. No, no, no. Depiction is not endorsement. Just because I think this might happen doesn't mean I think Doom is in any way justified in doing so.

28I don't care how scared he is. That's not okay. You don't use other people. Is he scared though? The root of most evil is using people as things. And in this scenario, that's what he's doing. You don't get to do that. Is he scared? Well, if he is scared, we're going from like two lines. We have heard almost nothing at this point from him. We know he lost some people. We know he's got a plan. We know he's, we think he's collecting things or people. That's all we got, really. So everything else is wild speculation, but that's what we do, man. That's what we do, man. Yeah. The idea that, because we've talked about this in the past, the little theory that it's Doom who creates Battleworld at the end of Doomsday.

13It works, it has a certain dramatic elegance, and I wouldn't be mad if I saw it happen in Doomsday. but I wonder if it puts him in a position of too much power at the beginning of Secret Wars whereas Secret Wars both the original version and the Hickman version kind of have Doom come into prominence throughout the arc of that story and usurp because he's a big usurper he loves to usurp things he loves to usurp and suck people dry that's what he does and I wonder if he's the big bad of secret I don't know the big bad of secret wars does that work? then I also think that Beyonder's a very silly concept that really really work hard to make work maybe it's somebody completely different maybe maybe they go back to Kang with a different Kang I don't know but like genuinely there is a lot of cosmic powers on the board for Marvel and maybe they have kept something completely secret from us oh wouldn't it be great if the Eternals were in it genuinely I would love it if the Eternals showed up and actually played a decent part.

18Speaking of powers, one thing I think that has been consistent across all the footage we've gotten from Doomsday so far, they are really spotlighting Doom's runes. And in the second post-credits scene with Banner, there's another scene where the camera is putting the rune squarely in the center of the screen. They're really hyping up that side of Doom. There's runes in the room. so yeah I'll be interested to see exactly how much lip service they give to the magical side of Doom in Doomsday especially given that I don't think it hasn't been announced that come a batches in Doomsday but you think he's gotta be in it right he's gotta be in it you gotta have you don't want to start ticking scenes off like a checklist but if Doom is as powerful a magician I mean we're talking great Soprendo levels of power here and then you've got to have him go up against Doctor Strange but again you don't want to repeat Infinity War where one of the standout sequences is Strange versus Thanos so I don't know maybe maybe maybe Strange is off trying to stop incursions somewhere else because he's gone a bit doolally and maybe Doom fills the void maybe by pulling a rabbit out of the hat or a raccoon out of the hat whichever whichever works you know and are the Guardians in this movie are they in Secret Wars the new Guardians is Quill in this you know he will return he will return yeah Star Lord will return did the film what are your excitement levels for Doomsday and did the post credit sequences help with that I will say it was a pretty dead crowd we watched it with it was quite a decent sized crowd I would say for 10am on a Friday morning I'd say the Cineworld, which is the IMAX or the LIMAX in Leicester Square.

19Great big screen, but not quite the one on Waterloo. It was maybe, what, half full? I was actually quite surprised by how many people were there, to be honest. Because, again, one, it's 10am. Two, I mean... They were probably all journalists doing podcasts. One, it was 10am. Two, and this was very inevitable, all four of the scenes leaked indeed leaked online literally almost as soon as the first screenings of this started playing oh okay and again I avoided that and three like this is a scene that this is a film rather that everyone in that cinema has seen already probably multiple times so the fact that there were that many people there at 10am on a Friday I was pleasantly surprised I did wonder whether anyone was watching Endgame for the first time reminds me of the time just when Endgame was coming out on DVD in 2019 and we did an event with Kevin Feige where he came in and we chatted for an hour about the movie and then we showed the movie and we were going we were talking full spoilers we were talking about the death of Tony about Steve Zendi and the death of Natasha all of this stuff and at one point by halfway through the Q &A I went by the way has everyone here seen the film and one person put their hand up going I've never seen this film I'm so sorry but Tony dies at the end you know that's a bit awkward but it is what it is but I wonder if anyone there today was watching it for the first time.

43But also... No, they're all in school, I think. I assume that, you know, pretty much everyone was there in the same boat as us and that they were, you know, Marvel mega fans who were really, really excited to see it. But the crackle wasn't there and it was hard to replicate that and it was hard to generate something like that and you can't generate it from whole cloth. You can't get a bunch of people together and go, be excited and whoop at this scene. But that seemed lacking to me. I disagree. I think there was quite a lot of atmosphere. I think that there wasn't the whooping mostly that we had the first time.

17The first time we saw that film and indeed the second time because the first time was a press screening the second time was like a much bigger public screening and they were insane. They were just like the electricity in that room yeah today didn't replicate that no question. I tried. I tried to get a whip going. You did. I mean what what interested me was that there were reactions to some of the big moments. There was applause when Steve picked up the hammer. Was there? It wasn't just me. It wasn't just me, I swear. And also, at the very end of the end of the credits, somebody shouted out, see you all here in December.

50And there was quite a lot of laughter at that. So I feel like that is the people who are going to be there on opening night on Tuesday as well. That's interesting, because it felt to me like the post-credits scenes, the new stuff, didn't play, didn't connect, but no one like, ooh, it takes a breath. There was a little bit of a move. Yeah, there was some move. For the Loki one especially, there was a ooo I heard that yeah I heard new for Loki did you know you presumably had seen did you see them online before you came in did you know what they were I saw snippets of them I didn't sort of watch them for more than five seconds I was like nope I want to save it for this each one you've gone oh no I've seen that I've seen five seconds of this one that's too much that click on this one oh no I've seen five seconds I wasn't actively clicking they were just coming on my feed because the algorithm knows what I like but yeah that's how I knew that they were there were four but yeah I hope there's no more because I'm doing an interview like a brief interview with the Russos for the website in about an hour and a half and if there's like six and I go well I only saw four and they go well what about the scene with Doctor Strange what scene with Doctor Strange I'll feel like an idiot you fool did you know for example it was Loki from the voice because I was like who's that guy who's speaking I did know from the voice yeah because he's got such a distinctive voice I feel like especially within the MCU yeah I really I really love his little bit in the film just that moment of oh well here's an opportunity alright I'll take it just poof I'll live a stolen life see you in Loki season one yeah and of course that you know his stolen life is that the most kind of consequential consequential consequential you know he ends up maybe Moon Knight will be in Secret Wars oh my god I would love it I would love it so much I was watching the movie again and Carol when they're you know they're having that sort of debrief in Avengers compound and she says you won't see me for a long time and I was like yeah and obviously that set it up for returning to the end of the movie but I was like yeah never a true word has been spoken sadly it was interesting watching the film and I did lean over to both of you.

10Which is difficult because you were in the middle. So you probably had to bounce back and forth between the two of us. But yeah, when Don Cheadle was on screen, it's like, that's squody. No. No. That's a scroll that we're watching, people. It's not. No, I don't like that. It's not. I reject Secret Invasion and all its works. All its empty promises. No. I mean... That's canon. That's a scroll. Is it canon? I don't know that it is. I don't think he's necessarily a Skrull at that point. Yeah, he is. When he falls in Civil War and he has his operation, that is when technically they made the switch between Rhodey and Skrull.

53There's even a line he has, I can't quite remember what it is, but when he's on Morag with Nebula, he says something. She says something like, I was a different person. And he says, yeah, me too, or something like that. Which obviously wasn't intentional. But that show was awful. and I don't think anyone at Marvel or indeed in polite society should ever speak of it again. I agree. So let's move on. So Rhodey is not a Skrull and we've sorted that to our satisfaction which is excellent because if he were a Skrull what the fuck would he be doing doing all that Avengers shit? But anyway, it doesn't matter.

25Okay, so have we talked enough about the banner? The banner sequence? Because we kind of got waylaid a little bit by that one. So do we think he's being recruited? we don't think that Doom has killed the Holocaust camera. No, I don't think he's killed the Holocaust camera. I'm confident in that. Right. Bruce Banner will return. Okay. Yeah. But I don't know anything else. Okay. So at the end of Brand New Day, or not the end, but towards the end of Brand New Day, he has this incident, which of course is triggered by Jean Grey. And spoilers for that movie. And he is last seen being loaded onto a gurney onto an ambulance and then taken away.

07And so, but he says, I've decided, I'm self-isolating down here. He says that and he's in Washington, D.C. Yes. And you were saying earlier on about the brand new, Brave New Day? Brave New World. The Brave New World of it all. Wasn't that camply high? Didn't they go back to New Jersey or was that somewhere else? I thought it was in, I kind of, I thought it was another U.S. space but I honestly don't remember. So, look, that's just, that was just my reaction in my head to it to be honest I don't have anything to base that on Campbell High was New Jersey and it's obliterated anyway isn't it in Winter Soldier so yeah maybe it was yeah but yeah I don't know where I'm going with this except to say that it's very interesting that he's got the power to say I'm going to isolate myself guys don't worry about it it's totally fine and they'll be like everybody else was probably like sounds good Bruce please do that probably yeah but couldn't they like you know just stick him away somewhere like I think experience shows that no, they cannot.

06He can take care of himself, but every time anyone else has tried to take care of it, it has made him angry. Yeah. I had half a mind to say put him in the raft, but if something goes wrong in the raft, then all the criminals are free all at once, and that's not good. But they are in the middle of the sea. And also, do you remember Hulk's reaction to getting on the helicarrier for the first time in Avengers? Putting him in an enclosed space... Not smart. In the middle of the sea? it's not smart not if you want that thing to stay afloat I'm sorry so yes if he said hey guys I think I should go and work on myself in a very isolated spot I think everybody would go that sounds good to us shall we send you a food package by drone I think that would be the right reaction alright anything else you want to talk about real quick because we have about five minutes left I I really like Endgame, guys.

04I don't want to be controversial or anything, but I think it's a good film. I stand by my own five-star review. Did you write the review? I did. Oh, wow. Was it five stars? It was. Oh, wow. Okay, cool. Are you really that surprised? I wasn't sure what we'd given it. I will say that that scene, that iconic scene where all the heroes are charging as one, obviously there's no way to qualify and quantify or measure this, But I do remember thinking to myself today and even sort of in previous times I've watched this film. Has there ever been a scene like that where however many characters on screen, 30, 35, that people of so many different ages can name all the characters on screen from probably the younger age of like seven to all the way to the older ages?

55Has there ever been a scene like that where so many characters are on screen, where so many people can name everyone going from left to right? That is really, really special. And yeah, just like as a nerd who loves all this stuff, it feels really cool that they managed to do this in our time and that we get to experience it. That is really special. I think it's a borderline miraculous achievement. I really do. I agree. In Infinity War, it's just the sheer amount of characters, It's a sheer amount of moving parts that they, the Russos and Feige and Marcus and McFeely had to juggle. It's just astonishing.

32Some very, very quick thoughts about Endgame, because I hadn't seen it for a while. I kind of stepped away from it a little bit. I mean, I watched it nine times in the cinema, so it's been a minute. This was my seventh. This was my seventh time. Obviously, I know the film intimately. But it's fascinating how much it struck me that there's not a lot of action in it until there is. And, you know, we always talk on these podcasts, the reason we love the MCU is because we love these characters and we would just watch these characters hang out. And it is low scenes in Endgame that for me deliver the biggest emotional punch where it's people just hanging out or just having a bit of a laugh together.

14I love the manipulation of tone. I think the gradual, you know, the gradual kind of morphing from quite somber post-Infinity War tone to caper movie to all-out war film at the end is terrific. I think there are some astonishing visuals in it. I think everyone's on point in terms of performances. I genuinely think it's one of the best blockbusters ever made. I think it's an extraordinary, extraordinary achievement. And I just loved watching it again and just kind of feeling how much of it is character-based. You know, what are the action beats? They take on Thanos at the beginning of the movie.

54That's over very, very quickly. And then even in the 2012, when they go to Morag, when they go to Formir, it's only really the New York sequences that have any action in it. And even then, it's quite truncated. It's Steve versus Steve. But otherwise, it's just these guys hanging out and having a great time, even when they're having a terrible time. Absolutely awful time. Yeah, I mean, the same niggles I had when we talked about it originally remain there. Likewise. but they're very, very small. And I still think it's bloody and miraculous that it works as well as it does. It's still amazing that all the female superheroes managed to gather around.

31I know, just in that one moment. Who would have thought? Although I did point out to Amon this time around that literally about two minutes before that when Peter Parker, who by the way, clings to a secret identity in Brand New Day, yet just blithely introduces himself to Carol Danvers within seconds of meeting her. I guess, why wouldn't you? Yeah, she's literally shining like an angel. at that point. She's okay. Peter Parker. You know, there's that sequence where he's being attacked by all of Thanos' goons. Activate instant kill. But Steve says to him, hey queens. And I think he was summoning all those women.

07Oh my God, you're so right. Do you know what I noticed this time that I don't think I've ever consciously noticed before? Consciously? Nope. Is the ankle bracelet on Clint in the very opening scene. I don't think I'd ever particularly noticed it before. Oh, that's cool. This is only, what, the third time I've seen it in IMAX? Only the third time. Only the third time. So many hours of my life watching Endgame. Jeez, man. I liked in the TVA, just very, very quickly, the TVA post-credits sting. I liked that the guy who plays the TVA tech in Deadpool and Wolverine is part of the TVA in this as well.

41That was nice. It's an actor called James Dryden. So that was good. I'm excited. I'm excited about Doomsday. I am very intrigued to see how these post-credit things pay off if indeed they do I think they will unlike say Brett Goldstein or Harry Styles but yeah we shall see I have not reached peak excitement for Doomsday yet I'm still at cautious optimism intrigue that's okay because it's like three months away if you were peaking now that's too early man if you saw me in the build up to Black Panther Infinity War and Endgame I did I did I'm still trying to erase that memory I was at peak excitement and it sustained all the way to release and that happened very very early in the promotion cycle I am not there yet I'm getting there I'm not there yet you gotta time your run to perfection Amon or as Dr.

38Doom might say you gotta time your rune to perfection there you go on that note wow I said before we came in listen we only have an hour and I don't have much time to edit this so we're going to just put it out as it is so if you stumble over stuff it's staying in if you have to look up something on the internet while you're fumbling around for it that's staying in I don't have time to cut it and then I'm the one that coughs anyway it's staying in it's raw it's unfettered it's real it's live and it's over because that's it for our Avengers Endgame Encore spoiler special hope you guys enjoyed it goodbye to Helen totally goodbye to Amon peace and it's goodbye to me I am off to talk to the Russos for the website not the podcast the website not the podcast and because we're not going to be in the same room together I can't grab them and lift them up by their ankles and shake them for the 26 pounds that I just spent and who knows because these guys are millionaires maybe a few extra coins will fall out and I can finally get that infinity gauntlet popcorn bucket that caught my eye earlier on this afternoon We shall see.

43Thanks for listening. See you next time. Bye bye.
