In short
The Empire Podcast episode discusses “Coyote vs. Acme” (director Dave Green’s film) and a broader “versus” movie theme, plus film/TV news and listener picks. It also includes a tribute news segment for Dolly Parton.
Guest backgrounds
Dave Green is the director of “Coyote vs. Acme” (also described as having survived Warner Bros. deletion plans). The hosts include Christophe Huit, Chris Hewitt, Helen O’Hara, James (Dyer), and Amon Warman (plus other recurring voices).
Key claims
“Coyote vs. Acme” was almost deleted by Warner Brothers like other shelved projects (Batgirl and a Scooby-Doo title). The film uses Looney Tunes-style parody to teach “sophisticated ideas” via courtroom-drama tropes. The hosts argue about which “versus” films are best and praise specific set-piece fun.
Notable examples
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (Edgar Wright’s best, singular style); Mitchells vs. the Machines (surprise 5-star); Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (funny cabin horror); Godzilla vs. Kong (fun stakes); Aliens (James Cameron, favorite); Into the Spider-Verse (Amon’s pick); Evil Dead 2 (Helen’s pick). News highlights: Dolly Parton’s legacy; Dan Stevens cast as Alex Murphy in the Prime Video Robocop series; Ryan Gosling developing an adult Flintstones reboot.

Automatic transcript. May contain errors.0:14Chris Hewitt:This week we talk about a film about a crazy society, Dave Green, a crazy character of Coyote vs Acme. Is this like in Toy Story where Paz gets hit and only speaks Spanish? Oh, oh! Is that what's happened? Si, si. Oui. Exactamente. Bonjour le pod, je m 'appelle Christophe. Christophe? Christophe Huit. Christophe Huit. Christophe Huit. Oh my word. Oh, that was a shot in the dark, wasn't it? Do you know what? Fair play to you. I thought you pulled that off very well.
1:05That could have gone very, very wrong. And yet, that seemed authentically French to me. It was... I'm saying that was absolute authentic French. That was authentic. Peter Sellers would be proud of what you just did. Me and my minky. How long has it been since you studied French, Joe? That was pretty good.
1:22Chris Hewitt:You have to give me something from that. I do give you something. I hadn't even read any of that out loud. It was like having Peter Suchet here in the room. Oh, I haven't really eaten. Just a mere mention of Suchet just makes my mouth water. And an hamburger. And Miguel. And Miguel. And Miguel. Anyway, hello, Paul. I'm Chris Hewitt. I was in France. Welcome to the Empire Podcast. How are you? Oh, I see. That was the hook. That was the hook. Very good. On the Empire Podcast this week, we talked to the director of a film about a giant corporation that was almost deleted by a giant corporation, Dave Green, or should I say Dave Fair, director of Coyote vs.
2:04Chris Hewitt:Acme. Plus, usual news and nonsense on the movie podcast that has just spent a week in France, can't you tell? Pouvez-vous le dire? Yeah. Si? Foulez-vous pas de moi ce soir? Is what you're saying? Anyway, I am back from France, et je vais bathir en French waters. Je vais bathir en la French language. Like Evian ou juste like water? Wow. Hell, that is disgraceful. I know about Vittel as well. What about Volvic and Island Spring? Okay, what if those are not French? Okay, I would recommend Park in the Accent. Right now, we do have French listeners and I reached out, I mean, I extended an olive branch or a branch to Olive to them avec mon français et maintenant vous avez vu un français et vous avez vu un français et c 'est disgrâce à l 'âge c 'est disgrâce à l 'âge bonjour il est disgrâce à l 'âge je suis juste pissing quand il me dit il me dit il me dit hello pod welcome à l 'âge je suis je suis je suis et ce week je suis je suis un ami de trois collègues de such lethal cunnerie vous avez déjà le mad titan de movies james d 'yre does que vous avez le haifleek de cette particular podcast can vous flicte votre haif james pas encore non Oh, c 'est un shame.
3:21Chris Hewitt:Try. I'm sorry, I would. I'm too busy looking for the Fall of Madonna with the big boobies. I shall say this only once. I cannot segue to Helen now. Hey, hey. This week... Come on. This week has seen the patron saint of big boobies leave us. So I think we can celebrate big boobies today. Very much in Dolly's memory. All right. In that case, Helen O 'Hara, our geek queen, is here. Hello, how are you? Dolly Parton a l 'horsion. Oui. Elle a l 'horsion. Oui, très, très.
3:59Chris Hewitt:Sous-titrage, indeed. Quoi ? Je ne peux pas. Hang on. Wait. Oh, mon Dieu. Chris, Chris, I know what the problem is. Cate. Cate. Yeah, he's Cate. Cate. Cate. Yes, he is Amon Warman. Welcome. Bonjour. And yes, this is bringing me right back to GCSE French, which is where I left it. I didn't pursue it. You left it. You said au revoir.
4:39I did. Were you good at French, Amon? No. Non. Non.
Oh, oh, look at that. Should we have a question? Oh, thank God. Please do. All right. I don't know what the questions are. I did a semi-panicked shout out this morning. And so I have no idea what's been sent through to me here. This could be bilge of the highest order. But then again, you just sat through that intro. So let us see, shall we? Here's one from Film vs. Book. In honor of Coyote vs. Acme, which is out this week, finally. Qu 'est-ce que vous avez
6:13de temps pour que film.
6:14Chris Hewitt:Does that make Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, the anti-penultimate edition? Yes. It does, doesn't it? Yeah, I guess so. Yeah. Yeah, it would do. Anyway. I'm staking a claim on, before Helen does it, Scott Pilgrim versus the world. God damn it! I gave that film five stars in Empire Magazine. I have stolen it out from under you. Wow. All right, James, justify your choice. Honestly, because it's not kind of like c 'est pas pitting deux titans together, c 'est juste Scott Pilgrim versus let's be honest, decency and the whole of reality everything about that film I love I do think it is Edgar Wright's best film, it's not necessarily my favourite but I think it's his best film I think it's absolutely singular in its style and its energy and what it did in taking those series of graphic novels and actually making them work on the big screen I'm not sure anyone else could have done that, I'm really not et, vous savez, il parle d 'Edgar d 'être un auteur comme Visionary et vous ne voulez pas de savoir que de la personne comme Running Man qui est un peu plus plus générique mais je pense que dans la film vous pouvez voir dans chaque frame et je pense que c 'est un remarquable cinéma d 'achèvement c 'est un shame il a fait du no money mais c 'est wonderful c 'est un malgré c 'est un malgré c 'est un malgré c 'est un malgré c 'est un malgré c 'est un malgré c 'est un malgré c 'est un malgré c 'est un malgré c 'est un malgré c 'est un malgré It deserved better.
7:41It really did. We let it down. We did let it down. As a civilisation.
7:45Chris Hewitt:Oh, as a civilisation. Not we personally. We personally. We supported the hell out of it. Given that somebody else has stolen that answer. Is this a Mount Rushmore? You can say that as well. I could, but Mitchell's versus the machines. Oh, that's a good choice. Yeah. Let the dark harvest commence. Came out of nowhere, had zero expectations, and then Ben Travis started wanging on about how it was fantastic. et je suis comme, ok, Ben, est-ce que c 'est un autre Rise of Skywalker ? Et puis on, on a watched it.
Not soon enough.
Wow. Hars. What if it was like the actual Mitchells, like for these standards ? Like the actual Mitchells, like there's only one Mitchells. Yeah. Versus les machines. And it's Phil and Grant ? Phil, Grant, Peggy Mitchell. Their mom, yeah. Don't forget their mom. Yeah. There's more Mitchells. Yeah. They probably had kids and such. You shake a tree in Albert Square and a Mitchell falls out. also want to put in a shout out for Tucker and Dale vs. Evil I thought you were going to say that I'm surprised you didn't except until now when you did I really enjoyed it so this is the two rednecks who are going to a cabin for the weekend and frightening the hell out of several college kids who are going to a cabin nearby who are convinced they're obviously redneck psycho hillbilly types and they're actually very sweet and well-meaning and it's not their fault that a series of bizarre accidents leave all the college kids dead mais c 'est très très funny et aussi je vais avoir très fond memories de voir avec mon maman et despite her not being into gore ou horror at all just laughing her ass off throughout so yeah interesting I remember not liking that film you really recommended it and then I sat down going oh this should be great and I kind of hated it but everyone I know loves it so maybe I'll give it a second chance I think you should give it a second chance I think maybe it just didn't hit you in the right spot Chris Hewitt versus Tucker and Dale Versus Evil In the recent times I enjoyed Godzilla vs.
10:08Kong In the recent times Before the dark times
10:12Chris Hewitt:Before the empire Yes Like three years ago Yeah Two big ass Titans coming together Oh you've seen Tucker and Dale vs. Evil Still on Godzilla vs. Kong Chris Oh yeah Sorry But yeah And you know What's going to happen Kind of going in First they're going to Fight each other Then they're going to Team up But it's still fun à voir qu 'ils sont de selles. Oui, not a lot of, is there, how much verses is there actually in that movie before they team up? A bit, a bit of them wrestling and doing WWF moves in the cityscape, which is, you know, what you want. Is it the best of that string of films, Godzilla vs.
10:49Kong, is that the high point?
10:51Chris Hewitt:Well, it's the best verses. I mean, all of them. So let's take in the Godzilla's, let's take in Skull Island. Like, is it the best of that entire arc? You mean what we now call the monster verse? I do not call it that, but yes. Almost has the word versus in his title. Oh, so close. And yet, no. And yet, no. Is it the best? I was going to say, we're discounting all the Japanese Godzilla movies. We're discounting all the King Kong films. Of this particular... Okay. Just the sort of monarchy. Is it the best one? No. What do you think is the best one? Helen just hates anything with a monarchy. I mean, I think the best film might be Skull Island for me.
11:29Really? And it's not that great a film. No, it's not. Je pense que Godzilla vs Kong Beats it on fun stakes Though I think there is a lot to recommend Gareth's original Godzilla I don't think it's brilliant, it's very flawed This is Gareth Edwards, Godzilla Sorry, we're on first name terms G-Man, as he calls it Yes, the big G, as I like to refer to him
11:50Chris Hewitt:You don't refer to Godzilla as the big G But Gareth Edwards That's right, it's confusing, I know G-Man Some of the shots in that Are quite extraordinary It just doesn't quite hang together as you want it to. But I think it's a noble failure. Yeah, I think that's fair to say. I would say in terms of pure fun, Godzilla x Kong, the new empire, might have Godzilla vs Kong and Skull Island beat. The final act of that film is utterly ridiculous, but I remember being in the cinema and having just an absolute blast when Godzilla and Kong are charging together towards their quarry.
12:57Chris Hewitt:Coyote vs Acme. So fun. Yeah, so fun. So high. Monsters vs. Aliens, of course, from 2009. The People vs. Larry Flint. The People vs. Larry Flint, yes. Big fight scene in that, which he takes on The People, of course. Who could forget AVP, Alien vs. Predator from 2000. Sorry, Predator, Predator, Badlands from 2004. Ford, is it V? It's V Ferrari, not versus Ferrari. Ford Fee Ferrari or Le Mans 66 as it is over here. It's so fucking stupid. Ford Fee Ferrari is a much better title. Taika Waititi's Eagle vs Shark. Very good. Good movie.
13:41Chris Hewitt:Early Jemaine Clement. We have Joe vs. the Volcano. The Volcano wins. Yeah, my money's on the Volcano. For sure. Earth vs. the Flying Saucers. This is a naming device that I think Hollywood could have got a lot more use out of over the years. A versus X, à l 'heure, à l 'heure. Il va y avoir. Il va y avoir. Oui, nous devons avoir plus versus movies. Sous-t-il, il y a Santa Claus versus The Martians ? C 'est pas un film ? C 'est pas un film ? Il y a Santa Claus versus The Martians.
Kramer versus Kramer.
14:23Chris Hewitt:Non, Santa Claus conquers The Martians. Oh, I thought il y a des versus. Oui, parce que c 'est ce que Santa Claus does he conquers things famously he does do that Freddy vs Jason yes perhaps the answer to this question no why because it's not that good yeah and also Jason wins spoiler for Freddy vs Jason but Freddy's head is still alive Freddy vs Jason vs Evil what about Kramer vs Kramer Kramer won correct James spoiler spoiler for Kramer vs Kramer yes any love for that et c 'est probablement le seul film dans ce list que ne a pas a sword fight de la sorte People vs Larry Flint mais en l 'appelant scène où Woody Harrelson je suis pas à dire il y a pas de sword fighting c 'est pas un point il est juste un hustler c 'est un peu heavy Kramer vs Kramer compared to some of the others c 'est pas ce que vous appelle un laugh riot et je pense que c 'est un fait est vraiment un autre c 'est
15:40Chris Hewitt:un dione dione
15:49Chris Hewitt:lund evans on instagram probably too late no no dione ou à Diona. All right, donc, let's go round the table très, très rapidement. What is your favourite film ? James, I know yours is Kramer vs. Kramer. It is. It's Ripley vs. Aliens, isn't it ? It is Ripley vs. Aliens and I watched it this year, obviously, in preparation for my big interview. But that was for work. So, you had a good excuse to re-watch it, but if you hadn't been preparing for that interview, would you have watched Aliens this year ? No. And when was the last time you watched it ?
16:25Quand est-ce que je l 'ai vu? Je pense que je l 'ai vu quand il est en 1.0. C 'est en 4K. Avec le grain smoothing. Je l 'ai vu. Je l 'ai vu James Cameron. Il est très heureux. Donc, c 'est bien. Et puis, après ça. Je pense que je l 'ai vu en 2021. Pendant la pandémie. En fait, je l 'ai vu avec quelqu 'un. Et nous tous... Nous l 'ai vu. Nous synchions-up.
16:59Et on a verra.
Je suis très sexy. conversation many times, that line. You always were an asshole, Gorman. That's the one. I don't watch my favourite films on repeat anywhere near as much as I used to because there is so much stuff to watch now that who has the time? Who has the time? But going back to the 90s when all I had was VHS tapes, I would watch my favourite films multiple times each year. Like, multiple times. Like, I would go through them on rotation. But sadly, there's a lot on now. I'm on. Favourite film? I've got many favourite films.
17:56That's not the question, Amon. Can I give you my letterbox four? No, you can have your number one favourite film. My number one favourite film. Probably Into the Spider-Verse. And what was the last time I watched it? All the way through. It's been a while. What I do is that, especially if I'm maybe not in the best of moods, I will pop on a scene from one of my favourite films like The Leap of Faith from Spider-Verse or Thor in Wakanda or Maximus Desmondo from Gladiator and I'll watch that and that will make me happy for that moment That's fine It's been a while since I've watched Into the Spider-Verse in particular all the way through I suspect a full rewatch is coming given that Beyond the Spider-Verse is hopefully coming out next year
18:48Chris Hewitt:We're finally there That's the dream Helen, let me guess Princess Bride? It's up there, it's one of them I'm sorry Helen, you have to choose I just watched Syrnau de Bergerac and then I got it on Blu-ray so I watched it again and then I went to the theatre and watched Adrian Lester in it on stage Oh, you should write a masterpiece about that every 10 years I should do that every 10 years
19:42Chris Hewitt:Huge, huge My favourite film of all time As people will know Is Evil Dead 2 Dead by Dawn, Sam Raimi, 1987 And I haven't seen it for a while I might need to re-watch it We're doing an Evil Dead ranking Literally after this And I haven't revisited it Massive lack of preparation I don't need to I know what happens I've seen it I've seen it many, many times You're going to talk about how it's not as good as I'm your don't necessarily It's the one in the cabin, isn't it?
Et la dernière ligne de l 'histoire de l 'histoire de l 'histoire de l 'histoire de l 'histoire. from the terror of the deadites hell but anyway now I can't really remember it otherwise and there's lots of stuff in between people saying groovy and work shit and things like that Jimbo you know every line from Aliens I think I do yes I don't know if I could recite the entire thing end to end without making any mistakes in fact I'm almost certain I couldn't but I pretty much know it off by heart I would say the only two films I'd have a hope of knowing entirely verbatim about that in the original Star Wars and I wouldn't put money on me getting either of them flawless c 'est pas quelque chose que je focuss sur mais si je regarde mais quand vous voyez il y a des fois vous pouvez choruser on quite a lot je me rappelle je vais à la quote-along screening at the Prince Charles of the Princess Bride once et je suis très annoyed que certains ont été juste en train de parler et je suis là non, non nous sommes là pour dire pour dire qu 'along alright c 'est un autre chose qu 'il y a pas qu 'il y a pas qu 'il y a pas qu 'il y a pas qu 'il y a pas qu 'il y a pas qu 'il y a pas qu 'il y a pas qu 'il y a pas est-ce que je m 'appelle Sérénard de Bergerac ?
22:02Chris Hewitt:Disgrace Helen vs. James McAvoy C 'est le film I want to see next. No, no, I love James McAvoy et I think he's one of the geek gods. But yeah, I really miss that line. There we go. So basically, none of us, apart from James, who did it for work purposes, has rewatched our favourite film for a while. Really? Yeah. Yeah, I mean, well, also for work purposes, I guess if we're talking Cyrano, I've watched it recently. That is true. We're a disgrace. It's true. It's not a disgrace. We're an absolute disgrace. C 'est un arbitraire thing that you've decided we have to watch our favourite films on a loop.
22:42No, we can appreciate them. They won't die. We'll disappear. It's like fairies. If you don't believe in your favourite film but keep watching it, it just fades out of existence. I clap for my favourite films every night before bed just so they know I love them. Every time a bell rings, a film gets a 4K release. does it? true story really? I think my favorites have 4K releases so I think good luck 4K
23:10Chris Hewitt:and Evil Dead 2 there's a challenge anyway anyway alright there we go boom done hurrah job's a good one thank you so much for your questions this week folks and sorry if we didn't pick your question but do keep them coming I'm usually asking for questions on Instagram I'm cthah1976 on Instagram so do reply to me there ou slide dans mes DMs. Insane. Oui. Oui. Il y a un très bon tweet about that while back, which was like, that is like Leonardo da Vinci painting the Mona Lisa and then turning around and writing Jolene. I mean, my God. Yeah. Astonishing. I mean, those two alone, nine to five alone, would cement you in the canon. The fact that she was also one of the best human beings in the world, the level, the extent, and the commitment to her philanthropy throughout her life was off the charts.
25:31Le business savvy que elle a show, vous savez, ce qui a été widely reported, mais Elvis wanted to record I Will Always Love You, mais le colonel demanded 50 % of the publishing rights if he did, il faut, il faut, il faut, il faut, il faut, il faut, il faut, il faut, il faut, il faut, il faut, il faut, il faut, il faut, il faut, il faut, et puis, Whitney Houston did ce qu 'il a fait avec ce record. What did she do avec ce record?
25:57Chris Hewitt:I don't remember being ubiquitous for weeks on end. Years, really. And Dolly took, by the way, the money that she got from that recording and invested it in black communities, apparently, in, I think it was in Memphis. But yeah, her reading initiative for kids, off the charts. She had her own theme. She has her own theme park. She recently opened her own museum. She's worked on musicals. I mean, she's kind of just, it's an incredible life that she lived. She even had her own cake mix. My God, she's living the dream for all of us. I should have worn more rhinestones today. I nearly put on my shirt with the rhinestones and then I didn't.
26:36And it was only after I left the house that I was like, shit, I should have done it in memory of Dolly.
26:41Chris Hewitt:You are an absolute disgrace, Hellspells. I am. I've let her down. She was 80 when she passed away. As I said, first and foremost, a music star, but her contribution to movies should not be overlooked either, right? Nor TV. You mentioned her business savvy. She played a key role in bringing Buffy the Vampire Slayer to screens yeah her production company was one of the ones behind Buffy but yeah her film career was I guess small but mighty the likes of Joyful Noise was that the one? Queen Latifah who was in that anyway but that was really good well it was pretty good 9to5 was great best little whorehouse in Texas great Steel Magnolias an absolute nailed on girl classic one of the most guaranteed weepies that I know One of my friends sat down to watch it last night Which I thought was a bold move Because that is a film that will make you cry at the best times And to watch it in memory of Dolly I thought was quite a flex But then her character in it I think is probably quite close to her So she played a beauty store owner And a lot of the kind of witticisms That come out of her character's mouth Are very much Dolly-isms You know, she talks about I haven't left These hips haven't left the house without Lycra on in 25 years or something.
27:59Daryl Hannah talked, she posted online about working with Dolly obviously in that film. She was kind of her assistant at the beauty parlor and she asked Dolly, if you don't mind me asking, how long does it take to do your hair every morning? And Dolly's like, oh, I don't know. I'm not there when they do it. She was just amazing. So many witticisms, so smart, so savvy and like I say, such a good person. she didn't mind being called a dumb blonde because she knew she wasn't dumb and she also knew she wasn't blonde I mean all that kind of stuff comes straight from her mouth and she will be hugely hugely missed but what an incredible incredible life to have lived she lost her husband of 59 years early last year and that must have hit her very hard she had been ill for a little while she'd been talking about trying to get her health back and return to performance and obviously it wasn't to be mais elle a vraiment a la marque de la monde pour le meilleur il y a un grand joke qu 'est-ce que vous appelle le Will Ferrell le film de la carol ?
I had not noticed that And Spirited is actually My favourite film of all time I forgot to say How often do you watch her? Every three days Very good Good lord In fact, I'm watching it right now Oh yeah, you're right There she is Oh, now there's some hijinks With Will Ferrell What a time Oh, Tracy Morgan As the ghost of Christmas Yet to come You tickle me Anyway I do genuinely like that film Anyway, so Good afternoon to you, James Dyer Good afternoon Hi Chris That was a very funny joke I've never seen that film You've never seen And you call yourself a Julie Dench completist And I don't plan to You should Good afternoon Good afternoon He doesn't know He doesn't know He doesn't know Scully doesn't know Ah very good Now you're a trip It's in fact my favourite film And I watch it every year Oui, donc, everyone has a favourite film, mais ce que c 'est votre favourite film?
30:25Chris Hewitt:Nonne's on the run. Oui, ma favourite film is Evil Dead 2, mais c 'est vraiment spirited. James' favourite film is Aliens, mais c 'est vraiment Nonne's on the run. Amon's favourite film is Into the Spider-Verse, mais c 'est vraiment... Space Jam. Space Jam. You said it, not us. I did convince that movie back in the day. Oh my God. Everybody get up, it's time to slam now. You've got a real jam. C 'est game over, man. C 'est game over.
31:02Chris Hewitt:A-punks just died. C 'est time de slam maintenant. Oh, non. Spunkmeyer? Non. Non, c 'est bon. Oh, non. Spunkmeyer, goddammit. Housebells, what's your favorite film? Maybe Serenade de Bergerac, but what's your real favorite film? Serenade de Bergerac est funny. Sex Lives of the Potato Man. Oh, that is insulting. Or is it, Helen, The Ali G Movie, which has just got a sequel. What a segue. Thank you. I don't think that's a Hall of Famer, if I'm honest. I thought that was Labour'd. But yeah, speaking of Labour'd, there is an Ali G sequel. Don't you come a spirited again, I swear to God. I swear to God.
31:41Chris Hewitt:Good afternoon to you. Good afternoon. Yes. Yes, there is an Ali G sequel What's it called? Ali G colon who is I is spelt with a Z Zed Zed's dead baby Yeah, he's English though so it'd be a Zed Yeah I put it to you Your Honour that Ali G was not funny in the early noughties and now in 2026 it's just borderline unwatchable C 'est une des ones où, si ce soit un court-rime drama, et vous disait que l 'adresse, il y a un de ses et il y a un de ses et il y a un de ses et il y a un de ses et il y a un de ses. Il y a un point. Ou le judge va dire, je veux voir où ça va. Je vais vous permettre de faire.
32:34Objection, overruled.
32:35Chris Hewitt:Can I overrule mon objection, Your Honour? Oui, donc, oh, je me dis, nous, j 'ai entendu, il y a été filmé en secret, c 'est qu 'il a été annoncé après le filmé qui a été complet, c 'est qu 'il a été fait, c 'est qu 'il a été fait, et donc, le storyline, à l 'extérieur que il y a une, il y a un, il y a un, il y a un, il y a un, il y a un, et aussi, il y a un, il y a un, girlfriend's surprise question mark pregnancy I didn't like the trailer I didn't think anything about it was funny some of his films have not had funny trailers to me and have ended up amusing me I will not rule out the possibility that that could happen again but Ali G was not a character I loved even back in the day so it will be a bit of an uphill battle I think this time yeah personally ok what's your favourite SBC film it's a Borat is it yeah is it a Borat I don't know if it's the first or second I thought both of those were very good I think the first one's better yeah though I I don't know I think he's very good in Trial of the Chicago 7 that's he is very good of course you say the Ernest Morgan movie I can't think why I think that but I definitely think that the four star masterpiece that it is of Trial of the Chicago 7 is a very good performance he can he can act that is a very good film Oh, il est un excellent acteur.
Look, peut -être que je suis scarred to death because I interviewed him in character as Ali G at the premiere of Ali G in Da House where he turned up wearing a crown and a kind of an ermine lined robe surrounded by half naked women holding his and with marijuana leaves over their breasts and it was just like it was awkward I'm not going to lie it was awkward so maybe I haven't got over that anything else you want to talk about in the world of movie news yes yes yes yes well it's technically TV news so we should cover it on the pilot TV podcast but we already recorded that we didn't discuss Vision Quest et Last Week's AMPR podcast, par le fait.
35:03Chris Hewitt:Je suis ici à chastise vous. Ok, fair enough. Just because we've been scarred by one Robocop remake doesn't mean that every Robocop remake will suck. The thing is, Robocop works on so many levels. It embodies the 80s spirit in so many ways, but it's also obviously archly satirical and extremely funny.
35:47And I think the Joel Kinnaman version strips all of that out and goes for the straight-up techno-thriller stuff and is just quite dull as a result. mais James Wan has talked about this and obviously he likes Verhoeven's original and he appreciates it for what it is but then I don't know how much of that Verhoeven-iness would translate I think a lot of it no I think a lot of it right now it's anti-corporate isn't it? there's going to be a lot of this and tech malfeasance and tech being used to impinge on people's lives I mean the flock cameras in the US are getting spray painted and defaced on a daily basis on a pretty industrial scale You know, big tech has never had lower ratings in sort of opinion polls than it does right now.
36:3370 % of young people in the US disapprove of what tech is doing. Young people. Downward tech. Young people. This is crazy. So I think this is actually incredibly fertile ground.
Il a shaved his head. Pourquoi ne pas ? Me too. Vous postez sur Instagram along with the news like dead or alive, you're coming with me which made me think Murphy It's just the confidence which you said he was going to play Alex Murphy I thought it had been confirmed Well, Chris, saying absolute nonsense with complete confidence is kind of my thing It's how you got where you were today It's how I got where I am today Opposite me, an idiot Alright, well that is potentially exciting Yeah Je me demande combien de américains il a dû être à la fin de la fin de la fin.
38:23Chris Hewitt:Je me demande. Oui. Un de la grande britannique TV moment. Serve la publicité. Protect the innocent. Uphold the law. Classified. And beat-off American. And beat-off American men. That's why it's classified. Dead or alive, you're coming with me. Oh, no. You have 30 seconds to comply.
38:49Good times.
38:50Chris Hewitt:I'd buy that for a dollar. Deary me. All right. Make Robocop sexy again.
38:59Robocop never stop being sexy.
39:02Chris Hewitt:Never stop, never stopping. Yes. What a helmet. All right. What the fuck is this Ryan Gosling Flintstone story? I don't know, but I'm so delighted by it. I don't understand how you make a Bam Bam movie when Pebbles is right there. Because they don't make films about women quand ils peuvent faire films about men oh satire women vs hollywood available in all good bookstores but with a kernel of truth but yeah this is the story that Ryan Gosling is developing a live action Flintstones reboot yeah centred on an adult bam bam rubble who the fuck is bam bam I don't know much about the Flintstones he's a little boy oh you yabba dabba don't I don't I know a little bit obviously I watched the Flintstones I'm not a complete idiot the Flintstones Meet the Flintstones They're a modern stone-age family From the town of Bad Rock They're a page right out of history Don't go into the next bit I've never really seen the Flintstones I certainly couldn't sing the theme tune But no, Bam Bam I know Barney I know Betty I know Wilma Everybody knows Wilma Oh yeah Steady That's slut-shame Wilma I'm not How's that slut-shaming Wilma?
40:17Oh, vous avez appris que everyone knows Wilma. Everyone was sleeping with Wilma. I thought it was implied. No, I'm just saying everybody remembers Wilma because everybody fancied Wilma. Although, in fairness, a lot of people also fancied Wilma.
40:27Chris Hewitt:Listen, I'd go for both. Wilma and Betty? Yabba dabba doo. Now we know what to look for your fanfic. So, Bam Bam is a little kid. He's Betty's son. I honestly...
Of Daniel Kaluuya After having won his Oscar He says okay I'm going to do a Barney movie So yeah I have no idea what it's going to look like But fair play to Ryan Gosling For using his power to bring something He clearly must have loved from childhood He's not like
42:01Chris Hewitt:Now he's like this huge star It is interesting to me that he's aligning himself With all these big blockbusters And he's not using his power to get say Half Nelsons made ou more Lars and the Real Girls. He's really just kind of going, yeah, I'll do a Star Wars. Yes, I'll do an MCU. Yes, I'll reboot the fucking Flintstones. Which all could be very, very good and very, very entertaining. Certainly Project Hail Mary was great. We loved that. I'm just saying he could make more indie films as well. That's what I'm saying. Maybe he will. Maybe he's just, you know, this is what's come up right now and then he's suddenly going to make like 16 indies back to back.
M-U-N-N-Y. Duh. Je suis un money. Deserves, il n 'y a rien que tu veux. C 'est vrai. C 'est pour damn sure. Nous devons pas le faire. Nous devons pas le faire. Nous devons pas le faire. Oui. Je suis un peu plus. Je devais pas le faire. We deserve it, but we don't get it. Anyway, that's neither here nor there. One last thing to talk about, the new issue of Empires and Sail. Tomorrow as we're recording, yesterday as you're listening to this, if you're listening to this on Friday, etc., etc., etc. What's on the cover? Digger. Digger!
43:24Yeah, who wrote that story again, Chris? Do you remember?
43:28Chris Hewitt:I think we're realizing now why I don't deserve the money. It was me. It was you. It was me! Excellent. Yeah, so that's exciting. I spoke to Tom Cruise Alejandro G. Norito Riz Ahmed and John Goodman star of Kong Skull Island and King Ralph of course he's star of quite a few things Sandra Huller star of Project Hail Mary spoke to all those people about this movie the secretive movie and you can read more about that in the pages of Empire Magazine there's other stuff in there as well I'm sure I'm told I'm assured There absolutely is We have Andrew Garfield talking about Uprising The Uprising, yes I apologise, yes Mark McDonough's Wild Horse 9 Oh, that's exciting, I'm hearing good things about that The first date were great There's some talk about whale fall, which I'm still fascinated to find out how to do that Die hard in a whale Well, yeah I mean, if you read the book, it's I don't know how they're going to do it.
44:34Anyway, Saoirse Ronan talking about bad apples and why she wants to be a Bond villain. I would pay real money to see Saoirse Ronan as a Bond villain. Honestly, I think it's a great idea and they should 100 % get in touch with her and have a chat. So yeah, she'd be amazing. I think there's also my Vision Quest feature in the new issue, which is really fun to do. I was on set of Vision Quest last year en la mind palace I guess la mind space that Vision keeps all the AIs in and that was really really fun and cool and I spoke to Paul Bettany and James Bader and the showrunner as well What are features if not Amon persevering
45:21Chris Hewitt:I like this line There we go lots of great stuff inside the issue we'll be doing a deep dive into the chorus with Nick DeSemlin in the shameless plug in a couple weeks time but right now rush out to your nearest news agent be it good or evil or virtual and buy the new issue of Empire Magazine it is imperative that you do that can I do that? yes legally it's mandatory that's legally binding no no that is binding alright I'm taking my legal advice from James these days Helen I'm sorry that's a terrible idea mandatory by law no no let you go out immediately et par le nouveau issue de Empire Magazine.
46:02Chris Hewitt:Shall we have a guest? Let's do it. This is a guest that if Warner Brothers had had their way a couple of years ago, would not have been on the Empire Podcast right now because he is Dave Green, the director of Coyote vs. Acme, which was a film that was earmarked for deletion, deletion by Warner Brothers in the same way that they deleted Batgirl et, de course, le biggest loss de l 'homme, Scooby-Doo, Haunted Holiday. Was it Haunted Holiday? Was it Halloween? Haunted Halloween? Halloween Holiday? Scooby-Doo? Either way. It was Scooby-Doo. Yeah, it turned into more of a Scooby-Doo in the end. Very, very sad.
46:47Chris Hewitt:And Coyote vs. Acme, in which Will Forte plays a lawyer who is recruited by Wiley Coyote to sue the Acme Corporation for selling him a pup avec tout le monde qui a fait que l 'on a vendredi à Nox et le noggin et ce qu 'on a pas.
Oui, bien, bien. Un petit peu de ce qu 'il y a ce qu 'il y a ce qu 'il y a next.
47:31Chris Hewitt:OK, excellent. Enjoy. Dave Green, bienvenue à l 'Empire podcast. Congratulations sur Coyote vs Acme. So pleased à voir ça. Like, he's not taken his wrong turn at Albuquerque and he's gotten to go on vacation. I love it. Exactly. So, did you intend to make the, you know, Little Kids' first courtroom drama? Was that part of the attraction of this one for you?
48:07Great question. I would say maybe a little bit. You know, Looney Tunes has always been, like, a little bit of the entry point into, you know, Teaching kids sophisticated ideas. It was always... I think it was the first time maybe I saw opera was through Looney Tunes. Or I probably saw the parody of Casablanca before I saw actual Casablanca. So I think Looney Tunes has always been kind of like...
50:13Well, I lived it, you know, just as long as everyone else lived it, having to read about it in the press for that long. I think, yeah, I mean, we heard that news, I believe, in the November of 2023, and you know, now the movie's coming out in August, which is amazing, and it's a miracle, so yeah, it was about that long, and I honestly over that ride I did not have much more information than what the general public did and occasionally I'd read something and I'd say I know it wasn't true and that was the only funny thing you can't react to everything that's written but it's okay it was a journey and we feel very grateful obviously to all the voices who spoke out on our behalf.
51:11It's truly a miracle that we're here today. Yeah, because there was this immediate upswell of people going, no, this is a really good film. You are missing out on this film. This is going somewhere. And, you know, same with Batgirl. I remember around the same time, people who had seen it going, this is worthy of being seen. It must have been just horrendous to live through. But I'm glad. I mean, it must have taken a titanic effort on the part of, I don't know if it was you, your producers, just to get this to this point. et, vous savez, thank you all for that Oh, le thanks it has to be reflected back at the audience and the voices online like everyone who spoke up and spoke out and didn't give up and, you know, Will Forte was amazing every once in a while he'd be interviewed for another show and he would say something spicy and it would, you know, make headlines so it was really like a group effort and it came et c 'est qu 'il a dit, et le voix en ligne était donc so supportive.
52:15La Internet finally utilises cette power à annoy people pour good. Totally. Well, Will plays Kevin Avery, a lawyer who is very smart, but has kind of in many ways given up and has forgotten his passion. And he is very used to phoning things in and calling it an early lunch every day. And then he one day meets Wile E. Coyote, this character who is the exact opposite.
53:02Wile Coyote wakes up every single morning expecting to eat Roadrunner stew by the end of the day and Wile is demanding and persistent and won't take no for an answer and is very persistent and maybe sometimes annoying but is admirable for his want and his drive and so Kevin meets Wile one day is kind of like Le début du film. Et que I think that warmth and that affability, when met with what could potentially be a kind of, I don't want to say skeezy, but like, you know, he's an ambulance-chasing lawyer who is kind of taking advantage of cartoon characters.
54:17When you meet Will's warmth with that character trope, you end up still liking and rooting for this character, which was so important to us. So we were thrilled that Will said yes and was into it. And then what about building the likes of Lana Condor and John Cena around that and sort of having this titanic courtroom battle, really? Yeah, I mean, again, it was like a series of lucking out on each role. Lana really Responded to the script And saw herself In it And the role reminded her of her mom And she told me that when she started And she's really Like the ray of light in the movie And the one who Is truly so hopeful In a much brighter way Than even Wiley And John responded as well Just thrilled because he's like I've never seen John play a role like this John does zero body slams in this movie, he has not relied on for his physical strength at all I think that really drew him to this project and he's incredible he's so on top he memorizes the entire script top to tails he knows everyone's lines it's so well rehearsed and I'm just I'm absolutely thrilled with his work in this movie Just watching it again for the first time A few weeks ago I was just like, what are some of my favourite Moments of the movie are just like when John Just cuts Will off At the knees or is passive aggressive Or just like I think they're really great together Yeah I think his capacity for legal body slamming You know, kind of is reflected In his ability to physically body slam people That kind of works for the character And what about the tunes I mean, obviously, Wiley is built in, but he's not the only one here, you know.
56:25So how did you kind of decide who to put where? Was that already done at the script stage, or was that something you were still working on as you came aboard and started bringing this together? We, so, I'll try to make a long story short, but I had kind of pitched the studio on, like, a new take on scripts that had existed, et Jeremy Slater a wrote a draft of the script a long time ago that was super solid and I had this pitch to base it a little bit more in courtroom dramas and thrillers and to center the story as much as possible on Wiley and to tell the story through his lens and so in that process we brought on Sammy Birch Oscar nominated screenwriter for May-December but at the time May-December was just a spec sample that was floating out there and we had read that and thought her work was just brilliant and just like very intelligent and sophisticated and adult and funny.
57:29And Sammy comes from a casting background. Her mom is this legendary casting director named Jackie Birch. She casts The Breakfast Club and Die Hard and all these incredible 80s, 90s movies. And so Sammy looked at this kind of array of Looney Tunes characters as this fantastic casting opportunity. And knowing that we were going for a character-driven story that was based in Wiley and Roadrunner and Wiley's want for Roadrunner, we looked at the rest of the Looney Tunes as more as a landscape for doing cameo casting. qui n 'ESTLE un peu de Discours into roles and placing them into tropes that we've known and seen in all these courtroom dramas and thrillers.
58:51What courtroom dramas did you go back and watch before doing this? The Insider was the prime source but also The Verdict and A Few Good Men and... Classic. Yeah. Aaron Brockovich. Oh. A few more. Yeah. Dark Waters even. Oh yeah, the Mark Ruffalo Yeah There's a little bit of all those movies in the movie somewhere Yeah, I can see that There's a whole conspiracy thread running right through this As well as the stuff in the actual courtroom How fun is that as a director? Is it difficult to do? Because I've talked to directors who, for example, hate doing dinner scenes They say dinner scenes take a really long time They're really complicated It's a very difficult thing Is a courtroom drama like that?
59:39Or is that the more fun end of the dialogue scene? I would probably say it's a little more fun than a dinner table scene because there's so much room and potential for escalating drama. But yeah, it's a similar challenge in that there is so much going on in a courtroom with exchange of eye contact and moments between people. et les exchanges sont vraiment le meal de une courte scene.
1:00:35Mais à la même temps, was insanely fun and I got to learn how to make courtroom scenes so that was fun And you're doing it with a high degree of difficulty as well because you had some puppets on set, is that right? To kind of get people used to exactly where the characters are and what the eye lines are and everything else and then you had to I think remove those, is that right? For the final shot?
But we also like the challenge of kind of fencing with one arm tied behind her back and saying okay, well if it is going to be signs maybe it's not crutch, maybe it's just coming in in moments where we really need it and eventually maybe the movie can move à un point où les signes ne sont pas nécessaires à l 'écouter et les personnages peuvent communiquer non-verbaux.
And I was so thrilled with the final result of that scene because you are really seeing these two characters in dialogue. And sure, one of them doesn't talk traditionally, but it's still a real fight, you know, and they can still argue and voice themselves. So that was like a, it was a big challenge, but it was, yeah, I was so happy with the final result and all the work the animators did to bring that to life.
1:03:33People may have seen online that Chuck Jones's rules for Wile E. Coyote and the Roadrunner, you know, pop up, certainly on my Twitter feed all the time, or Blue Sky feed, whatever. I mean, how much did you guys discuss those? Because I guess you've got to, again, no spoilers, you've got to bend a couple of rules a little bit. They have to go to a courtroom and not be in the desert the whole time. I don't think that's a spoiler. So did you have to kind of debate those kind of rules and kind of figure out what are your rules for this movie? Yes. Well, I would say that they did come up and we did discuss them.
1:04:07And I was also working with an animation team that was this kind of motley crew of folks who were from all over the world. Some of them were in the UK and some of them were here in LA. And some of them had worked on the Looney Tunes cartoons, the show that Pete Brownguard created. And I personally felt like that show was the funniest version of Looney Tunes that had existed since the originals. And so when I first started this job, I called Pete and got some advice from him. And he very kindly kind of lent me and or suggested two of his favorite animators. And they were Ryan Kramer and David Gemmel.
1:04:54and they're both story artists, but also they direct and they're just so funny. So they had formal Looney Tunes training in that they had been under WB's supervision in making those cartoons. And those cartoons in a way sometimes play with modern ideas in a way that our movie doesn't, but they were just as joke makers. Those guys were so, so funny. And so I was kind of working with them and then working with artists like Carlos Lutterbach, who's a formally trained 2D artist who's incredible, worked on The Simpsons. It's just amazing. And so he would deeply study the traditional model, Chuck's model of these characters.
1:05:45And we very much preferred the Chuck model of who Wiley is, because I think that character is also like, if you look, he's kind of softened and changed over the decades. He's become less aggard, and he's become a little nicer, friendlier looking in his illustration style. So anyway, Carlos would kind of make sure that our Wiley was looking and behaving right as well. So it was really a team effort. And yes, with that list, definitely looming over us the entire time, for sure. I love the idea of formal Looney Tunes training. Just visions of doctorates in Looney Tunes are amazing to me. Very finally, just to sort of wrap up.
1:06:38what's next for you? I've read there's a project called Hex. Is that, is that what's next on your to-do list? Can you say any more about that or what's up? That's a movie that I'm super excited about. It's, we're, we're still working on it early days still, but it's, it's definitely a step in a, a darker direction. Like I, I grew up making short films that were like very, there were like horror comedies that were violent and funny and weird and dark and that was like the kind of thing I loved making as a kid and I think Hex will provide all of those things and more and I'm really excited about it but yeah we'll see I'm excited for whatever is next well best of luck with it and may it have a much smoother journey to the screen than this one did thank you so much thank you so much okay that was
1:07:36Chris Hewitt:dave green director of coyote versus acme and now it is time to dig deep into the reviews section of the podcast talking about the films that are out this week in the multiplex and indeed on your sofa plex jimbo hello coyote versus acme yeah um i'm worried about this because everyone says it's brilliant you don't like comedy i don't but or hijinks or locks do you like looney tunes no So you really were not the target audience. No. But, you know, I watched this film. Are you glad this movie exists? Yes. That it was saved? I am glad that it exists, but mainly as a fuck you to people who think it's a good idea to take art and write it off for tax purposes.
1:08:15So, I mean, I am delighted that we're getting to see it, and I think, honestly, everyone should go and see it, if only to show David Saslav that it was a terrible idea to try and delete it from existence. But look, it's an odd setup. It's a kind of hybrid mixed reality cartoon live action courtroom drama, which is a weird pitch on paper. But the idea of this, of course, has kind of already been covered, is that Wile E. Coyote has spent his entire career chasing the Roadrunner using Acme products which inevitably blow up in his face. And so, as is the way in America, he takes a litigious path and he goes to find a law firm where he discovers Will Forte as a man who will take on cases for cartoon characters.
1:08:55and thus begins a lawsuit against the Acme Corporation for their malfunctioning technology. Their counsel, Buddy Crane, which is a great name, not quite Denny Crane from Boston Eagle, but... Denny Crane. Denny Crane. Denny Crane.
1:09:09Chris Hewitt:Med bow. Played by the incomparable John Cena, decide to defend the Acme Corporation and a conspiracy, we should say, is unraveled. A conspiracy that involves... And Helen, I can only apologise for what's about to happen. It involves Dr. Peter Lorre. Oh, no. What is happening? You mean Peter Lorre is in this film? Well, yes. Does he play a significant supporting role? I mean, he's a pivotal character, I would say. A pivotal character in Coyote vs. Acme? He's in the prologue. The prologue, you say? Tell me more. Don't like it. Let the record show that Helen is plugging her ears and trying not to listen.
1:09:56I'm so wrong. Anywho, it's quite surprisingly touching at times. You really kind of feel for Wile E. Coyote, which I think is actually very impressive. And there's a really quite, you know, I'm not saying it necessarily brought a tear to my eye, but I understood the concept of emotion when the bond between Wile E. Coyote and Roadrunner is kind of explored in a courtroom setting. It's quite fun. It's a little bit of digs at big corporations. But for me, the gold standard of this format is and will always be Who Framed Roger Rabbit. And it kind of annoys me a little bit when a lot of people are saying, it's the new Who Framed Roger Rabbit.
1:10:34It is not fit to lace Who Framed Roger Rabbit's tune shoes. However, I had a really good time with this film. That's like saying, oh, this drama's good, but it's not Citizen Kane, therefore I'm going to ding it. Like, yes, they're both films that involve tunes and people, but I don't think there's any other real... But to be fair, most of the reviews have referenced Roger Rabbit when they're talking about it. Because that's how you explain to people what it is. They could have referenced Pete's Dragon. No one's saying they shouldn't. Nobody's referencing Pete's Dragon. That's not a known reference.
1:11:07Chris Hewitt:Bedknobs and broomsticks. Bedknobs and broomsticks. That would have been fine too. The sequel should have been Bedknobs versus Broomsticks. Just saying. Absolutely. Porn version, Big Knobs and Huge Dicks. This honestly is such a good film. And Mr. I Hate Comedy and cartoons and also joy over here. Don't let him put you off. Yes, you should go to say fuck you to the people who wouldn't release it. But you should also go see it because you will have a really good time watching it. That is the main reason to go see it. I think it is such a clever use of a courtroom drama. And I am all for weird combinations of genre.
1:11:42That is what we need more of in this world and not just the same, you know, stuff over and over again. But a Looney Tunes legal drama? Yes, abso-fricking-lutely. This is a great My First Legal Drama for any kids out there, right? You get your kids along to this. Within, like, six months to a year, they'll be watching 12 Angry Men and A Few Good Men and all the John Grishams. This is their way in.
1:12:07Chris Hewitt:You can't handle 12 Angry Men. I can't. that's you nearly walked straight into that and I'm not gonna we're moving on the point is it's a genuinely good legal drama and it's a genuinely good and I can't believe I'm saying this it is a genuinely good character piece about the coyote yes it is a genuinely interesting dissection of his character what makes him tick how he thinks it is really really effective despite the fact that they stick with the character as he is in the cartoons. He does not speak. He occasionally holds up a sign with a word on it. Yeah. But that's it. And yet you understand so much about him.
1:12:50And I also think Will Forte's character, this incredibly hangdog, underdog of a lawyer, is a great foil for him. Kevin, his name is. And you've also got Lana Condor as his niece, who's like interning with him, who is so peppy and fun and upbeat and enthusiastic and positive and just everything he's not anymore. And it's a nice dynamic between them all. And great use of the other Looney Tunes characters, you know, in various supporting roles. Not everybody's in there. They haven't kind of bent over backwards to just throw people in at the screen, but they've sort of found ways to use people in interesting ways.
1:13:29I think it's terrific. I think it's really, really good. And this is genuinely one of the films of this year that I'm likely to watch over and over again, I think. completely concur I think this is absolutely brilliant and just to add to what you're saying about Wile E. Coyote I love what this film has to say about failure and trying again after failure and Wile E. Coyote he's when it comes to bouncing back he is undefeated like that and that is part of what the message of this film is and that fully resonates with me especially so So yeah, I think this one was great. Fantastic.
1:14:10Chris Hewitt:Four stars? Four stars. Four stars for Coyote vs. Acme. That's right, Helen. Stop it. I'd forgotten how much you don't like that impression. I can tell by the shape of your mouth. I know you can.
1:14:27Chris Hewitt:That's exciting. So there we go. Four stars for Coyote vs. Acme. I cannot wait to see this movie. I hope people do go see it. because one of the reasons why WB thought it would be okay to delete was that they didn't think it would make much money. And I hope they're proof. I think that's the thing. It's that mid-budget range that studios have kind of stopped working in. It's not that it was super, super expensive. It's just that it's that level that it's really hard to make a big hit on. But it should be good. Go see it. It's really good. You won't regret it. Four stars for Coyote versus Acme.
1:14:59Chris Hewitt:Next up we go from Coyote to Dogs with Ridley Scott's The Dog Stars. Amon? Yes. Directed by Ridley Scott, who I believe has directed a film or two that you like. Is this correct? This is correct. Someone to watch over me and... A good year. Gladiator 2. Also Gladiator, that one, which I love when he was actually on stage. Oh, you mean Maximus versus Commodus? sure, that one. When he was actually on stage at the premiere during the night, I did say strength and honorably in combination of Gladiator, of course. Anyway. Thank you for explaining that. That was helpful. I got nothing from him, so I was wondering what was going on.
1:15:47Chris Hewitt:When you say you shouted, did you shout it across the room? What happened? It was more for me and my plus ones benefit. And anyone within the shot. I'm not sure if you heard it. I did not hear it. Why are you not entertained at the end of the film? I did not. Did you say? Probably best. Welcome to the new world of gods and monsters. Also, I did not say that, no. We'll get into what I said. Jesus, Amon, will you review the film already? Honestly. I'm trying. The Dog Stars, directed by Whitney Scott. And yes. I love him. Come on. We're never going to get out of here. Come on, Amon. Come on. Game face.
1:16:29So this takes place, don't do it, I can see your face, in a post-apocalyptic world. You've got Jacob Elordi, he is just hanging out in an airplane hangar with his very, very good dog. And a gunman, played by Josh Brolin. And he hears this mysterious transmission that comes through on the radio, and he's like, I want to go and find the source of this. That is what this film is about. I mentioned the dog, it's a very, very good dog, probably the highlight of the film, in the first half especially. the second half picks up with some I think well staged action sequences because the first half of the film was especially dull but the film overall this takes place in another post-apocalyptic dystopian world we've seen a lot of that recently this film doesn't feel like it's really adding anything new to that genre and I will also say Jacob Elordi who was very very good in Frankenstein just last year I don't think he was very very good in this I like the themes of this movie especially the one about humans always wanting for connection and striving for that you need a really good performer to help take you on that journey and for me, Jacob Lauderdale in this film I just thought it was bland and dull so overall this film didn't quite work for me unfortunately it's been a while since I've really loved the Ridley Scott movie I was hoping this would be it it was not oh wow
1:17:53Chris Hewitt:no strength and honour here Hells Bells Do you concur? I kind of do. I think, to be fair to Elordi, I don't know that it's a bad performance so much as it's very hard to build a movie around a character who is depressed, maybe even more than that, and doesn't really have very many people to talk to for large sections of the running time. And when he does, he doesn't say much because he's not that kind of guy. So it kind of leaves you with this gap at the heart of the movie. And again, I don't think it's a performance issue so much as just like a story structure kind of script issue. That kind of thing can work on the page because you get somebody's internal dialogue.
1:18:30It's very, very, very difficult to make that compelling on the screen. This was shot in Italy. And if I'm being picky, and you know I am, I don't think the mountains look like the Rockies. The Dolomites have a very particular kind of jaggediness to them that doesn't feel Rockies-ish to me, but that's okay. But it does look beautiful. It looks really cool. I think the other problem with it is the threat. So, you know, most of the population has been wiped out, but there are still these people, these Mad Maxian types running around the place causing havoc. It's very badly defined. It's not clear what, you know, what they want, what they're doing.
1:19:13You know, they're not zombies. They're maybe a bit more Mad Maxi, but some of them are maybe just stragglers. No. It doesn't say what the apocalypse was? It's viral. In the book, there's actually a virus and a blood disease, and it's kind of the combination of the two that wipes so many people so effectively and so fast. The film, to my recollection, didn't make that distinction between two different things going on. It just sort of seemed to be a sort of viral thing. But it sort of leaves some people obviously just like preying on others, and that's the real threat. but it's not just very clear the limits of that.
1:19:49And for example, you have all these people who keep like lighting fires on mountains willy-nilly despite knowing that there are bad people out there. And it just, you know, that kind of stuff just seems like Survival 101. Like you maybe don't like fires unnecessarily. You know, you hoard your fuel, you try and preserve your resources and that kind of thing just didn't, it looks cool on the screen but it doesn't make a lot of sense. and I think that kind of stuff in this really kept pulling me out of it. I just find it a bit of a mess. I thought there was interesting meat there, but the execution wasn't 100 % for me.
1:20:24He can still shoot action like nobody's business. The aerial photography is beautiful, but I just didn't think it quite hung together.
1:20:32Chris Hewitt:Two stars in for Ridley Scott's The Dog Stars. Let's get back on track with another auteur, shall we, Hells Bells? Pedro Almodovar is back with Bitter Christmas. Is this a Christmas film? It kind of is. Is it a Christmas film? It starts at Christmas, I know. What? Bah humbug is here again. Yeah, so this is, it's of a piece with some other recent Almodovar films because it sort of plays with the, you know, the artist as a creator and the way the artists draw from life and sometimes kind of steal almost from life. So we have two timelines, two kind of plots going on at once. And first of all, there's the story of Elsa, who is a sometime film director and currently advert director in Spain, who is having terrible migraines over Christmas, has to go to hospital with it.
1:21:30She's played by Barbara Lenny. And then 20 years, that's in 2004, that story. And then in 2025, essentially nowadays, we have Raul who is a celebrated much more successful filmmaker who is working on his next script and it turns out the script he's writing is the one about Elsa he's played by Leonardo Sparaglia so and he's Raul so it's a really about this again this idea of what is okay to be inspired by from life and what is kind of cannibalizing from life and impinging on your friendships and impinging on those around you and how do you kind of create I guess I don't think this is Almodovar's most successful version of that kind of idea I think he's it's something he's been kind of exploring for the last several years I think Pain and Glory if I remember correctly touched on it you know you had Antonio Banderas playing a filmmaker in that as well but this one feels a bit meandering it's like he started out writing one script which kind of what happens to Raoul he starts out writing one script and then he goes in a different direction he kind of changes focus halfway through and so you kind of like well this doesn't all really hang together but I do find it just really soothing to be in his world I find it really interesting to kind of hang out with his characters they're always they've always got little interesting stories about them and tell each other interesting things and have the most glorious kitchens.
1:23:04Genuinely, you could have a sort of kitchen off between Almodovar and Nancy Mayers, and it would be very close. It really would. So colorful. Oh my God, the interior design is off the charts. But yeah, you know, they are interesting people, but this is a very meandering story. So for me, it's not up there with his absolute best work. but I still just quite enjoying going to Almodovar land every couple of years and seeing what he's up to now. But it's very much, it's quite self-critical, I think. It's basically saying you can't trust filmmakers, they will steal from you.
1:23:44Chris Hewitt:Oh, that's true. So that was an interesting, I guess, approach. Yeah, they're always half-inching stuff. He's 76 years old. I mean look Sir Ridley is 88 you know crazy who is the winner in this scenario what did we give this one Bitter Christmas solid to high three three stars then for Pedro Amadovar's Bitter Christmas how exciting next up Hell's Bells yep not very often for legal reasons I'm going to say this but I want your sex oh no thank you is the name of the film I would like you to review next. Yes, this is the new film from Greg Araki, who's a mere stripling of 66, by the way, after the other two.
1:24:31Chris Hewitt:Is Greg Araki 66? Yeah, just checked. Get out of town. Shut the front up. I will not. So this stars Cooper Hoffman as a young... Who's also 66 now, I'm guessing. People are just aging differently. Are we on the interstellar planet? What's going on? God, I hope not. No, he was born this century. Oh, thank God. It's worse the other way. He's a young lean. He's 23. He's 23. Crazy. Anyway, Cooper Hoffman plays Elliot, who is just out of college and is very excited because he has landed a job with a hot, talked-about artist, Erica Tracy, played by Olivia Wilde. And he is one of her team who is kind of executing her concept and making her art for her and generally doing whatever he's asked to do around the gallery as she prepares for her latest exhibition.
1:25:25And she calls him into her office one day and basically says, don't think I haven't noticed you looking at me. This is completely inappropriate and can't believe you're sexualizing me like this. And he's a bit like, oh my God, I'm so sorry. I wasn't aware of it. And she goes, although if you would like to have sex with me, we can totally have a no-strings-attached relationship. And he's like, wait, what? And so begins an assignation, a series of assignations between them, which go into some unexpected directions, at least from Elliot's point of view. So this is kind of an exploration of the, like, Gen Z's maybe timidity or certainly perceived timidity with sex.
1:26:09You know, studies have shown that young people are having less sex than they ever did. that they are much more apt to, you know, talk about informed consent and make sure everybody's on board with everything they're doing and be very, very careful with sex and treat it almost as something very fragile and precious rather than the maybe slightly older generations of just get on with it and see what works.
1:26:32Chris Hewitt:Just dive in and have a go. You know, you never know. And so there is a kind of generation gap element to this relationship. there's also elements obviously given her much greater institutional financial social power there is there are elements of just power and abuse and things like that in the relationship between them even before you get into any bdsm issues that they may be doing among themselves consenting adults and all the rest so um so yeah so it's kind of an exploration of all these ideas it's also about the way that sex can be commodified that uh prurians can be commodified that people act in ways that are maybe contrary to their best interests.
1:27:10It just raises a lot of questions and gets into a lot of stuff and is also very funny and quite sharp. It didn't quite end up where I expected it to, but I really enjoyed this and I thought it was clever. It's 90 minutes as well. You can't really go wrong. And great, great performance, obviously, both from Cooper Hoffman and from Olivia Wilde. This and the invite makes a really interesting where are we at with sex right now as a species double bill. I will say that. Amon, where are we at right now with sex? That is a question for maybe a different podcast. That could last a lot longer than this podcast.
1:27:56But yeah, I... Blimey. Promises, promises. I could last. I thought he said I could last.
1:28:06Chris Hewitt:I was like, wow. Okay. Yeah, no, I was going to say the invite would be a good double bill with this. I would also say Baby Girl and Pillion would be, you know, make it a quadruple bill. Those films would also pair well with this. I had a good time. I think the performances are just incredible. Olivia Wilde especially. What a year she's having. And they are both very, very game to do all the kinky stuff that Gregor Aki shows in this film. It's very interesting. I watched I Want Your Sex and One Night Only within one day of each other. You must have been exhausted. It's like we got on the one hand, I Want Your Sex, which is very much like we're going to show all the sex, you know, right in your face.
1:28:53And then One Night Only, which we're about to talk about, which is very chaste when it comes to that. But yeah, I had a good time. And it's quite funny. I think the supporting cast as well is solid. Daveed Diggs gets a lot of laughs just by staring at his delivery at certain points, which I really enjoyed. So, yeah, a good time. Incredible costumes as well. Yes. There we go.
1:29:13Chris Hewitt:What did we give this one? I think this is a four. Four stars. Four stars then for I Want Your Sex. Next up, Amon, tell us about One Night Only. Yes. So it's directed by Will Gluck of Anyone But You and Easy A fame with a screenplay by Travis Bourne. And it asks, what if a fascist government decreed that unmarried people have sex on just one night of the year? What? Sounds like my life. What? It's the dumbest premise in history. Is this like the splurge? This is the thing that bothers me. So this is the purge with sex, right? Yes, essentially. But the purge works because it's called the purge.
1:29:57It's quite catchy. One Night Only is the most generic title. It would have killed them to call this like The Fuckening or something. Honestly. Yeah. Yeah, it would have, I think. Okay, carry on. It's interesting. I watched this movie with Helen, and they basically, the opening sort of text is basically them saying this rule, and Helen had a very vocal reaction to it. To be fair, Will Glock does something quite interesting, which is he basically puts up the, you know, the sort of the title card saying, you know, okay, a government has put in place this rule that you can only have sex. Single people can only have sex one a year.
1:30:31But he does it against the most poppy, upbeat, rom-com tune you've ever heard in your life. It was just the juxtaposition. I was just like, what is going on here? And to be fair, I think he was trying something, and he does it a few times through the film, where he'll have the most upbeat, poppy music over this objective dystopia. But yeah, I don't know how... Well, you talk first and then I'm going to correct you. Yeah. Okay, you don't know what I'm going to say yet. I'm a quote to it. I know what you're going to say. Go on, Lamont. So you've got Ali, played by Monica Barbera. She's a singer with stage fright to record very funny advertising jingles that are reworks of popular tunes like Vanessa Carlton's A Thousand Miles.
1:31:18I had a lot of fun with that. You've got a pizzeria owner Owen, played by Callum Turner. and they are on the hunt on this very night and meet each other and sparks fly but there are many hurdles they will have to jump over in order for that spark to blossom into something more um let's get into the negative stuff that i'm sure has a rant very ready to go on because the premise is very bonkers and doesn't really make any sense and the film is very incurious about wanting to explore and give us answers to that probably because it knows the answers that it has won't really satisfy because there's a lot of questions like how is this enforced are people informing on each other what led to the ban in the first place why don't shop stuck up on condoms all these questions that are not really answered within the film but i have to say i did not hate this because a romantic comedy especially relies on its stars.
1:32:18If the stars have that chemistry and you're rooting for them, I think that goes a long way. And I did feel that with this film. I think Monica Barbaro especially is great in this and the chemistry she has with Callum Turner is really, really fun. And you are rooting for them through the meet-cute, through all the hurdles, some of which are more ridiculous than others, that they ultimately get together. I had a solid time. Helen, what did you think? Downloading Helen Ratt. I agree with some of that. I don't think Callum Turner or Monica Barbaro are bad in this. I think they do what they're asked to do pretty well.
1:32:56It makes not a fucking lick of sense. It could not be a dumber idea for a movie. It could not be worse executed as a world. The world building, I think, in this is appalling. I think they're trying to be satirical. They're like, oh, you know, the way this country is going, they're totally on the verge of banning sex. But the idea in this movie is that they have banned sex for straight people, all straight people, all the time, that gay people can somehow get around this ban because they have long experience of getting around bans, you know, on their identity. So this really only applies, as we're told in this movie, to straight people, and that there is some way of measuring if you're having sex and not just a good time next to someone, that they're measuring various hormones in your body at any one time.
1:33:44It is so stupid. What's allowed? Let's talk bases. No, not very many bases. No bases at all. So over the shirts. Also, I'm sorry, if it's measuring like oxytocin and all these kind of like hormones released during sex, most women would be fine because like most men don't know what they're doing. so like it would just look it would just look like a guy was just you know having some private time some alone time and nobody else was affected most of the time it'd be fine it's so dumb it is it makes no sense and I just the more the movie went on and the more they said about it the less sense it makes so stupid oh we've done it
1:34:28Chris Hewitt:we have found something Helen loathes more than my Peter Lorre voice it's close when I saw the trailer for this I was like I'm going to enjoy this film I can't I can't quite pin down why but I'm pretty sure I'm going to like it I mean look Monica Barbaro's dress will ensure that many people enjoy this film but like it's not enough I just look they are doing their best God bless the pair of them but they cannot with this stupid dumb material what did we give this one then? two stars two stars but sounds hell that you are actually in the one star camp which I think makes this a must-see. I think so too.
1:35:07Chris Hewitt:And I'm going to be watching it while playing Helen's rant on a loop in my headphones. Do you think you can only watch this film on one night of the year every year? That sounds like a sentence I don't want to live with. What if you had to watch one night only? Yeah. One night only a year. Hell's Bell's, what would you do? How would you get out of this? I I I just like fall asleep I guess but you can't fall asleep why not they have machines that measure whether you fall asleep you have to watch one night only on one night so like it's playing in front of me but can I be second screening no 17 stars says Helen O 'Hara for one night only that is very very exciting indeed there we go and on that note that is it for this week's Empire Podcast join us next week for more film related fun where we'll be joined by I think Willem Dafoe.
1:36:02Chris Hewitt:Willem Dafoe, I think, for his film Late Fame, which is very, very exciting. Oh, by the way, I completely forgot to mention this. In terms of our live show, that is not being released as a podcast, by the way. That is a live show just for people in the room at King's Place as part of the London Podcast Festival. So there you go. If you want to hear what happens at that podcast and it's not going to be like I want your sex or one night only then come along. It might be 90 minutes of me just doing Peter Lorre. Oh no. To Helen. Oh I'm busy that night. What a shame. I'm afraid the law has been changed Helen.
1:36:38Chris Hewitt:You now have to come along to the podcast. It's legally binding. Anyway. It's not. It's not. But until then until we meet again until that auspicious occasion it is goodbye from my three colleagues of such lethal cunning. Goodbye. I'm on warming. Peace. Goodbye. James Dyer goodbye Chris see you you know next time thank you goodbye Helen O 'Hara toodaloo and it's goodbye from me I am off we fought and we prevailed in the good battle to save Coyote vs Acme I'm off to try and save Scoob Holiday Haunts for that is what it was of course it was Scoob Holiday Haunts who's with me let's go we ride and don there are dozens of us dozens thanks for listening see you next time bye bye

This week's episode of the Empire Podcast sees Dave Green's Coyote Vs Acme finally reach cinema screens after a long and perilous journey which saw the film face actual deletion at one point, before common sense prevailed. Green is our guest this week, and he tells Helen O'Hara about the arduous experience he went through, and the film itself, which is a joyous affair. Either side of that, Chris Hewitt returns to the host's chair and is joined by Helen, James Dyer and Amon Warmann to talk about their favourite movies and how often they see them; discuss 'vs' movies; look at the week's movie news, including the sad passing of Dolly Parton (however, this episode was recorded before the news that Tim Curry and Peter Cullen had also left us; we will pay tribute to them next week), and a perplexing move from Ryan Gosling; and review Coyote Vs Acme, Ridley Scott's The Dog Stars, Pedro Almodovar's Bitter Christmas, Gregg Araki's I Want Your Sex, and Will Gluck's One Night Only, which sparks a Helen rant for the ages. Oh, and an old friend of the pod makes an unexpected return, much to Helen's delight. Enjoy.
