Guest

Tyler Hochman, founder/CEO of 4 Enterprise (Forbes 30 Under 30), serial entrepreneur in consumer and B2B tech; previously launched SafeStop to reduce workplace turnover and improve interventions using AI.

Key claims

success with AI requires correct data ingestion, formatting, storage, and routing to AI tools; companies often lack infrastructure, so results fail.

Notable examples

workplace turnover “U-curve” where under- and over-utilized employees had similar churn likelihood; manufacturing productivity extremes (7 vs 1000 bolts/hour) showed similar turnover. Sports: AI video parsing (Gemini) to create scouting “punch lists” from global footage; fashion uses AI to move top-to-middle funnel via trend synthesis; real estate checks lease compliance; finance rates acquisitions by feeding historic data into AI.

You know, John, I think something that most people may disagree with is becoming successful is about quitting.

2:09Most people think, you know, perseverance and, you know, dedication, which are important, are the necessary traits. But I actually challenge that and say it's actually about knowing when to quit and then subsequently when to pivot.

2:22John Lee Dumas:Well, Fire Nation, we will be talking about AI solutions that actually deliver immediate ROI now so that maybe you can pivot, you can adjust, you can fail faster and succeed faster. And I want to talk first and foremost about SafeStop to 4. Take us back to the beginning, Tyler. How did you first get your start with SafeStop and what led to launching for FORE as a workplace turnover prediction and reduction tool? Yeah, we launched SafeStop when, you know, there was a lot of tension between law enforcement and communities. And we were trying to figure out where the focal points of that tension was and then how we can intercede to deescalate the situation and subsequently reduce that tension.

3:08and we identified traffic stops as a major, you know, source of tension between law enforcement and civilians. And then, and then, you know, sought out to use technology to make it just net better, you know, not kind of taking a side on the, on the conversation, but just saying, can we use technology to just make it, you know, overall unequivocally better?

3:29John Lee Dumas:Well, I want to move from that into your pivots to AI, because at what point did you realize AI wasn't just a feature of what you're doing, but actually the future of the company. I mean, what drove the pivot into AI powered solutions? Yeah, we created, so, so SafeStop was a different, a different startup for what we identified was that a lot of problems corporations face are a result of big data. And, and it's, can you compute big data fast enough? And, and, you know, typically a human at this point cannot, but AI can. And so we were thinking, what is a really interesting focal point that's a big data problem and came to the conclusion that, you know, at the time, workplace turnover was.

4:15You have all this data, everything from how long is your commute to, you know, what is your utilization and burnout at your job to, you know, what's the variability of your arrival time and your departure time? I mean, the data points go on and on. And if you look at that from a human's eye, you know, you don't necessarily see the through line, but, but our AI was able to calculate not only, uh, you know, when someone was like to likely to leave, but also what is the best intervention strategy to retain them.

4:44John Lee Dumas:So let's talk about a specific example that you love within this. I mean, don't have to be specific with the company's name or the exact use or whatever it might be, but give us an actual example of what you were just talking about of the use of AI? Like, what does that look like in the real world? Yeah, in terms of how we used it for workplace turnover, and then I can go through a series of examples, we've moved pretty far beyond beyond workplace turnover. But at least in terms of workplace turnover, we identified, you know, a U curve of a specific corporation's employees, where they were, they were like bamboozled, because they thought this was amazing.

5:22Essentially, the curve demonstrated that if you were underutilized with all these separate different factors, or if you were overutilized with all these compounding factors, you actually had the same likelihood of turning over, meaning that an employee who is terrible at their job and an employee who is amazing at their job, we even found potentially the amazing employee may turn over even more. But at the very least, they had the same likelihood of turning over, which was like shocking to this corporation. Why would someone leave if they're so good at their job, you know, compared to someone who's terrible at their job.

5:54John Lee Dumas:Now, you said you had a couple of examples within that. What were they? So an example would be, you know, we worked with a manufacturing company and they, you know, essentially have productivity measured on on output of certain products. And we're very able to clearly see that the employees, the employees who are producing, like literally manufacturing the products at the highest level, call it, you know, a thousand just just to make up a product here, bolts per hour, and then the employee who was manufacturing at like seven bolts per hour, both of them were just as likely to leave, which was shocking to the company.

6:31John Lee Dumas:So let's talk about immediate ROI from AI. I mean, that's something exciting for companies to think that they can literally start doing the right things with AI and see immediate ROI, return on investment. So a lot of companies, they experiment with AI, but they struggle to see results. I mean, you see this probably every single day, Tyler. What does it actually take to generate immediate measurable ROI from AI investments? I'm so glad you brought it up, because that's actually why we pivoted a little bit from workplace turnover to being more of AI solutions architects. And what we found is that most people aren't, most companies aren't set up to actually generate immediate ROI because their infrastructure isn't correct in terms of but data ingestion.

7:18So where do you actually get the data from? Because ultimately the AI is only as good as the data you feed it. And so you need the correct infrastructure to make that data accessible. And so you need a correct ingestion engine, which is where it comes from. You need to structure format that data, which is the pipeline it then goes through. You need a place to store that data. Are you storing it in cold storage, warm storage, hot storage? And then you need to output that data to a specific AI tool. And so what we found ironically is that people loved our workplace turnover solution, but they had no, large corporations had no infrastructure in place to actually enable the tool.

7:54So we swam downstream and started building that infrastructure for people, doing everything from helping them figure out better sources to find their data, cheaper ways to find their data, to structuring that data, formatting that data, storing that data, and then eventually outputting that data into different tools.

8:10John Lee Dumas:I mean, what's an example of you actually doing that for a company? And again, we don't have to use exact names, But just to give Fire Nation a sense of what that looked like in real practice. I'll give a couple of cool ones. One of the ones we work with is a sports, multiple sports organizations. And let's take an NBA team as an example. What we did is we, you know, the question they had is, can they use AI to better assist their scouting process? Essentially be looking at it from a big data problem, which is that, you know, you have all this footage of players across the entire globe, you know, from, you know, U12 all the way through, you know, college, call it 24.

8:49And, but their scouts are only able to look at so much. And so could you create an AI that can read footage and identify attributes of players that scouts find particularly attractive, apply that on scale, and then that way you're kind of creating a punch list for the scouts. They can, you know, you're kind of doing the first couple pass-throughs with an AI. And so what they're getting is a significantly condensed list of all the things that, you know, videos of players that they, of the things they actually look for. And it was very successful. I mean, AI is very good at these big data problems.

9:23Yeah.

9:24John Lee Dumas:I mean, this is something that we discussed a few weeks ago when we were first talking about doing this interview, because I'm a big college basketball fan. I was just like, man, NIL has changed everything. It really has changed everything that name image likeness, where the student athletes even are getting paid big dollars. I mean, especially in sports like football and basketball. And what's huge right now? Well, of course, overseas. In fact, my team got, you know, a great player from overseas, from Latvia specifically. And, you know, to be able to utilize these tools that Tyler's talking about, Fire Nation, I mean, it just gives you an edge of sifting through, you know, now what is a global world sports and how do you get the best eight, nine, 10 players on your team for what you're building.

10:05John Lee Dumas:And AI can do that. Again, that's just one example and one niche and one vertical, but how can you do that from your company? Now, we're going to talk about AI across industries, AI and overseas sports recruiting, which we kind of talked about already, but I want to dive deeper, the traits of a tech founder, and more when we get back from thanking our sponsors. 13:22John Lee Dumas:Visit highlevelfire.com and start building your something today. Tyler, we're back. And as I mentioned before the break, let's talk AI across industries because we're seeing AI show up literally everywhere. So how are industries like sports, entertainment, fashion, finance, how are all of these industries using AI in ways that most people don't even see? So sports, you know, we kind of covered a cool example. There's also, you know, examples that look at player fitness and, you know, using AI to identify essentially what is the optimal kind of health metrics that a player exhibits during certain workouts, even during certain plays.

14:08And then trying to assist that player, you know, given those AI generated insights. Moving into fashion, which is kind of cool. You know, AI does really cool things in the predictive space. And so, again, fashion both is very creative, but also what we find is that a lot of it is like a funnel. And the best or the most creative people, they need help going from the top of the funnel to the middle of the funnel. And then they take it from the middle of the funnel to their ultimate output because that's very, you know, kind of person specific. But in terms of like synthesizing, as an example, like historic fashion data, you know, what the trends were, what worked, what didn't work.

14:44AI is fantastic at that. And we see a lot of fashion houses leveraging that to take them from conception to idea to sketch to multiple sketches. And now that the, you know, the designer has something to choose from and then they take it and, you know, obviously add their own kind of subjectivity to that from there. But it's doing a really good job of moving from top to middle of funnel. We see AI, we use a lot in terms of our real estate clients. One of the things that we've developed is products that help landlords make sure that their tenants and tenants make sure that they're in compliance with lease regulations because ultimately ai just reads very long and boring leases it checks it against uh what the tenant uh has you know supposedly uploaded in terms of the documents they've uploaded and make sure it compliant super boring uh no one likes to do it but but a great use of ai um trying to use ai with financial houses uh you know doing due diligence so you know can you uh diligence businesses because you have all this historic data, you know what you're looking for, and then can you plug that into, you know, feed it to the AI?

15:50The AI looks at it and says, okay, I would evaluate the company the same way you would or the same way, you know, our president would, and this is my rating for the company from an acquisition perspective. So there's a whole bunch of really cool uses of AI right now.

16:02John Lee Dumas:Now, we have already talked about this a couple times, but I really want to dive deeper because to me, it's just such a fascinating topic that a lot of people would just never think when it comes to AI. I mean, like you mentioned, like going over leases and contracts. I mean, that kind of makes sense. Like that's an obvious use of AI, but man, let's go back to like AI and overseas sports recruiting because that's such a fascinating application. Like how is AI transforming how talent is identified and evaluated globally? I mean, you mentioned like fitness level, et cetera, but like, let's even dive deeper.

16:31John Lee Dumas:I mean, like, what are they really like, what are they doing? And like the game, you know, the movie money ball that came out a number of years ago, Brad Pitt, about how the Oakland Athletics used actual numbers to figure out what players are undervalued. How is AI gonna help people do that in the sports world? Yeah, I mean, right now, it's democratizing the access to sports is kind of the best way to phrase it. Because I think a lot, especially on the international scene, and even within the national scene, but I think especially on the international scene, because a lot of players were overlooked simply as a result of being in a very niche country or not having a lot of, you know, media attention.

17:10You know, there's only so many scouts. They can only go to so many places. And so what AI can do is kind of do what I was describing before, which is it can take the first pass and look at literally any kind of video. I mean, we powered our solution. The underlying, you know, technology was Gemini. And Gemini has a great video parsing ability. And so it can determine, you know, the things. And obviously it was trained, but it can determine the things that the scout was looking for. Everything from, you know, three point, you know, the way the three point shot is taking place, where it's taking place, how far you're shooting from, what is the angle you're shooting at?

17:44What is the velocity at which you drive with when you're going for a layup? You know, in terms of your free throw shooting form, arc of the ball, I mean, all these different kinds of things. Obviously, some of them do are impacted by video quality, but a lot of them aren't. And so even as like, if you're a mom and dad and you're recording your kid, you know, playing their sport and, and, you know, your AAU league, uh, you can now upload that and a scout could see that. I mean, it really is incredible.

18:08John Lee Dumas:I mean, let's be honest. I mean, iPhones, you know, other phones, Androids, etc. I mean, their capability of recording in 4k is just getting so much better, so much easier. So I mean, those kinds of situations like those old grainy, like kind of like choppy videos, they're going away. I mean, we're talking like high def 4k stuff, like it's crazy what we have access to these days. And that kind of leads me to talking about the traits of a tech founder, because a lot of people that are listening, they either work for a tech founder, they are a tech founder. They want to become a tech founder. So Tyler, in a fast moving AI landscape, what qualities separate entrepreneurs who adapt and win from those who fall behind?

18:49I think right now it's really easy to fall behind. And if you think that you know even 1 % of what's out there, then you've already fallen behind. And so to me, the best traits are ones in which, you know, you're willing and able to learn constantly, but from a programmatic perspective in the way you do business. Like we at four have multiple days every week and, you know, not days, but hours within each day that are solely scheduled to education, both from the C-suite perspective, all the way down to, you know, our V or L1 engineer that are being educated on the new things that are coming out.

19:28And if you are not constantly learning, you know, and think again, it's not even 1%, like it's most people know 0.001 % of what's available, then I think you're falling behind. And so the people who are successfully deploying AI within their business or even to other businesses are not afraid to say they have no idea what's going on right now, or they're already behind the time because they're a week late and they're constantly learning. All right.

19:54John Lee Dumas:For business owners who feel behind on AI, and again, raise your hands right now if you're listening and you feel like you are. I mean, I am. I mean, listen, things are happening every day. So I mean, we're all behind on some level. It's just how behind are you? What would you say, Tyler, is the one decisive move that we can make this quarter to future-proof our companies? I would say it's about looking at existing processes and applying this standard to The standard is called ER. Are you doing processes that are expensive, repetitive, and repeatable? And if you are, those are good processes to consider using AI to make more efficient and automate.

20:35And so I would say you don't even have to apply the AI, but the very notion that you are looking inward and you're applying the ER standard will definitely get you further than most competitors.

20:45John Lee Dumas:Tyler, share with Fire Nation the one thing from everything we talked about here today that you want us to walk away with knowledge-wise from our chat. I think being inquisitive, I think being, you know, willing, willing to AI is exposed a lot of people from an ego and hubris perspective. And there's nothing wrong with saying you don't understand it. I don't understand it, you know, most of the time, considering how fast things are coming out. But as long as you remain inquisitive, you remain, you know, open to listening to conversations like these, and, and, and you remain, you know, open to looking inward and seeing, you know, how can you be better?

21:22I think people will be very successful with the use of AI.

21:25John Lee Dumas:I mean, Fire Nation, I love that word inquisitive. Like when people ask me, John, what is one thing that a lot of successful entrepreneurs have in common? I say, listen, great entrepreneurs, they're curious. They are curious individuals by nature. So Tyler, Fire Nation wants to connect with you, wants to learn more about your company.
