Podcast Summary: Entrepreneurs on Fire - Episode with Ed Mylett
Episode Overview Title: Feeling Stuck? Take This One Action with Ed Mylett: An EOFire Classic from 2022 Host: John Lee Dumas (JLD)
Guest
Ed Mylett Description: This episode revisits Ed Mylett's insights on taking actionable steps towards personal and professional success. Originally aired in 2022, it emphasizes the importance of identity, habits, and the potential for transformation through small actions.
Key Takeaways
- The Power of Action
- Feeling Stuck: Mylett discusses how many people feel overwhelmed and stuck in their pursuits. He emphasizes that this feeling often stems from producing results that exceed one's current identity.
- Identity as Thermostat: Mylett describes identity as a “thermostat” that regulates the perceived temperature of one’s life. If results begin to exceed this identity, individuals may subconsciously sabotage their progress to return to what feels familiar and safe.
- Overcoming Overwhelm
- Identity vs. Overwhelm: Mylett argues that the sensation of being overwhelmed is often a misinterpretation of stepping into a new space where one's identity hasn't yet caught up.
- Self-Confidence Building: Confidence is linked to the promises one makes to oneself. Fulfilling small commitments builds trust and reinforces the ability to tackle bigger goals.
- The Ripple Effect of One Action
- One Decision Away: According to Mylett, transformative change is often just one decision, relationship, or thought away. He encourages listeners to look for these opportunities.
- Example from Life: He shares a personal story about his father, who overcame alcoholism by focusing on taking it one day at a time. This principle of "one more" can lead to significant life changes.
- Repetition and Results
- Habit Formation: The episode highlights how repetitive actions become habits and can create emotional responses that drive behavior under stress.
- Emotional Home: Individuals have an emotional baseline that they tend to revert to. By consciously choosing positive emotions and actions, one can reshape their identity and habits.
- Quality of Questions
- The Importance of Questions: Mylett stresses that the quality of questions asked can dramatically influence the quality of life. Reframing questions can help in finding positive meanings in challenging situations.
- The Reticular Activating System
- Matrix Concept: Mylett introduces the idea of the “matrix” in our brains, which filters information based on what we deem important. By consciously training this system, individuals can focus on opportunities aligned with their goals.
Actionable Steps for Listeners
- Identify Your 'One More': Reflect on the one action that could pivot your current situation toward a more fulfilling life.
- Set Small Promises: Start with small, achievable commitments to build self-trust and momentum.
- Ask Better Questions: Focus on the questions you ask yourself, especially in challenging situations, to shift your perspective toward positivity.
Conclusion Ed Mylett's conversation with John Lee Dumas serves as an inspiring reminder that transformation is within reach through intentional actions and a focused mindset. By changing one’s identity and repeating positive actions, individuals can break free from feelings of being stuck and pursue their goals with renewed energy.

Well, hey, Fire Nation, great to be with you. Most people would disagree with this, that you're a lot closer to the success, happiness, dreams you have than you think.
1:45Most people will convince you that it's far away and a long journey. And there may be some validation of that, but the truth is you're, you know, most people don't lack vision, brother. They lack depth perception. They think they're further away. So they act like it. And the truth is, I just wrote my book about it. As you know, the power of one more that's out here June 1st. And the premise of that book is really simple. You're one decision, one relationship, one meeting, one thought, one podcast, one emotion away from a completely different life, good or bad. And so you're much closer to shifting things than you think you are.
2:18I was just playing golf, extreme example. Two weekends ago, meet this guy. Everyone's like, you got to meet this dude. He's a billionaire. And I was fascinated. Hey, you know, how'd you make your money? And he goes, well, I have one meeting. I said, what happened? He goes, in the 80s, I met this guy and me and my friend both loaned him 50 grand. I said, cool. He goes, a week later, my other friend asked for the money back. I let the guy keep the 50 grand I gave him. And that 50 grand turned into 800 million. in. I went, who is this dude? His name's Jeff Bezos. And so that guy's life, that's an extreme example.
2:53But think about if you're married, you are one encounter, one meeting away, one relationship away from a different life. It's true in business. You're one account, one thought away from something completely different. And if you believe that, you'll be looking for those one mores in your life. You'll be looking for that meeting, that relationship, your reticular activating system, which I call the matrix is chapter two of the book, will be programmed to find those things for you if you believe that's a separator. So there's a ripple effect to it as well. I resonate with that at such a high level because as you were going through that, I went back to the one podcast episode that I heard back in 2012 that inspired me to launch this podcast, which is now 3 ,700 episodes and 100 million listens, over 3 million listens per month, all from that one episode, podcast episode that inspired me to launch Entrepreneurs on Fire.
3:45And I want to be honest with Fire Nation. They know it, but we want to get a dive into it, which is overwhelmed because overwhelm is everywhere. So why do you feel that so many people are overwhelmed when they try to achieve their personal life goals? I don't think they really are. Let me tell you what I think happens. I think what's happening is you're beginning to produce results or desire results that are ahead of your identity. So I talk about this in the book when I talk about on the show last time with you. Your identity is the most powerful force in the world that's going to govern your life.
4:16It's like a thermostat setting sitting on the wall. It sets the temperature of your life. So if you've been living in any area, you have an identity, you have a money thermostat, entrepreneurial one, relationship one, faith, fitness, you name it. But let's just say in terms of success, if you really internally have an identity that is 75 degrees and you begin to heat things up or desire to heat things up, You will begin to do everything you can in your life to cool it back down, to get what you believe you're worth, what you believe you deserve. Your identity is the thoughts, concepts, and beliefs that you hold to be that most true about you.
4:48And so that sense of overwhelm is BS. What it really is, is you doing everything you can to sabotage your own success so you get back or stay at 75 degrees. The truth is, you don't need to know everything to be successful. What happens is when you step into rooms with faith, boldly, you get into that space, you usually figure it out. You'll figure out the answers. And most people, you take, look at any great company. Steve Wozniak is a good friend of mine. He founded a little company called Apple with this guy, Steve Jobs. They were going to be a board company in the beginning. They had no idea there was going to be an iPhone or an iPad.
5:21But they got into the room and one thing led to another, to a Mac, to another, to another. And now they're the most dominant company in the world. So it's not about knowing everything. You're not overwhelmed. What's happening is you're stepping into a new space. You're trying to go higher, and you're cooling down with your thermostat setting, thinking you're overwhelmed, thinking you're confused, thinking you're not qualified, thinking you don't have all the answers. I can promise you I don't have all the answers. So if I don't have them all, and I happen to possess several hundred million dollars in net worth, pretty good family, great marriage, tremendous friendship.
5:52I contribute a great deal, and I don't know everything. I don't even know close to everything. In fact, the older I get, the more I realize what I don't know. But what I do work on is that identity and that thermostat setting to believe what I'm worth Because then that's when the answers begin to appear One single action can be transformative for anybody who feels stuck. So can you expound upon that? Yeah, it's the premise of all of my work So people have asked me why did you write the power of one more? I wrote the power of one more because my dad died last year And it occurred to me my dad was, I was raised by an alcoholic.
6:27First 15 years of my life, my dad was a heavy drinker and it was a lot of stress and anxiety in my house. He tried to get sober many times and he tried one more try, the whole chapter on trying. And then when my dad got sober, finally that one more try worked. I used to say, daddy, are you going to stay sober forever? And he used to say, I don't know. I'm going to stay sober for one more day though. There's too many people that they try to do everything at once. Like if you're thinking about quitting, just don't quit for one one more day. And so that one action changed my dad's entire existence.
7:00And I'm just a big believer that you, that one action, that one decision input impacts everything. The difference between winning and losing in life is so small. The truth is it's so small. It's almost scary to talk about it because there isn't a huge gap between those that win than those that lose. It's one action. It's one call. It's one text message. It truly is. The question becomes, how do I know what to do? I'm reading Think and Grow Rich again right now. I think it's the best book ever written other than the one I just wrote, The Power of One More, because you don't think and get rich. You think and you take actions.
7:37There's never been a book written that says, here's the thoughts and here's the congruent action you must take with it simultaneously to produce the result. So there's a lot of books on thoughts. There's a lot of books on actions, but there's not one on which ones do I do together at the same time. And that's why I put that together in the book. You've got to think the right thing as you're taking the step, but you also have to take the step. And so that's what I write about. Fire Nation, if you're not fired up to do one more of fill in the blank right now, check your pulse. Now, Ed, you talked about the identity thermostats.
8:07What does this specifically have to do with our self-confidence? They're correlated. They're not the same thing though, but they are correlated. Self-confidence impacts your identity. But what self-confidence is, is really the relationship that you have with yourself. And self-confidence is, do I trust myself or not? Self-confidence is built easily. That's the irony. It's an internal game. And it's a process of keeping the promises that you make to you. And when you begin to stack up small promises that you make to yourself, one after the other at the other, you begin to build a reputation with you that says, I can trust me.
8:41When I say I'm going to do something, I do. When I say I'm going to make my bed, I do. When I say I'm going to eat 1 ,500 calories a day, I do. When I say I'm going to drink a gallon of water a day, I do it. When I say I'm going to get up at a certain time, I do it. And when you begin to have that momentum and that relationship with yourself, then when you point it at something bigger, I'm going to make$500 ,000. I'm going to make a million dollars. I'm going to find my dream relationship. You have the self-confidence because you have this reputation and relationship with yourself that you otherwise would not have had.
9:09The other thing I do in the book, I have a trilogy of self-confidence that I teach. I'll give you one of the three. and it's a really easy one and it's intention. Not enough people drive their confidence from their intentions. They think, well, once I'm really good at this, then I'll be confident. Well, then you're always chasing your tail. What if you should just drive your confidence from the fact that I intend to do good, I intend to serve, I intend to make a difference, I intend to contribute. And when you begin to drive your confidence from your intentions and not your abilities, that self-confidence stays with you always rather than being contingent on achievement.
9:47Because I've seen a lot of people with self-confidence then have a failure or setback, everyone's going to nod right now, and then lose that confidence. So if it's always contingent on performance, that's a very futile existence. It's very fragile also. But if your confidence is linked to your intent, now you're a machine. Fire Nation, don't touch that dial. Ed's got more fire and brimstone coming up as soon as we get back from thanking our sponsors. One thing I noticed about your interviews is that you ask fantastic questions.
12:47How can asking ourselves the right single question advance the quality of our life? It's the key to everything, isn't it? because the truth is the meaning of the events of our life don't define us. It's the meaning we attach to the event. And the meaning is the question we ask ourself about it. So the quality of questions legitimately determines the quality of your life. It's amazing you asked this because the book's not out until June 1st, but you can preorder it if this is before June 1st. But here's the truth. I have a whole chapter on this because the quality of the questions is literally going to program your life because it defines meaning.
13:23When my dad was dying, he had cancer. You're like, well, there ain't anything positive about that. I had to ask myself, what would I need to believe about this for it to serve me? So not what do I believe about it? What do I need to believe for it to serve me? And I started to change the questions I asked myself about. And all of a sudden, brother, my dad's cancer, even though I wish it never happened, did serve many positive meanings in my life. For example, my own health. I found out after that I had some stuff with my heart that I didn't know about. I checked on it because my dad was sick. My dad and I's relationship meant before my dad, if I was in a meeting, the phone would ring.
14:00I'd let him go to voicemail and answer him later. Once my dad had cancer, no matter who I was with, I would say, hang on a minute. That's my dad. And I would grab it because that priority changed my own health, my own family, my own outlook on life. Me realizing that when he passed away, man, I was next. And I was with my dad when he had one more day to live. I was with my dad when he had one more hour I was with my dad when he had one more breath And guess what? Someday you will have one more day One more hour and one more breath And what do I want my life to have become when I enter those moments?
14:37The memories, the contribution The difference we made, the places we went, the things we did How we feel about ourselves and ourselves as a family That's what matters to me So all of those things that happened to my blessed dad, my precious dad, made a difference for me. So you could take even one of the worst things in life and you can find the right meaning by asking the right question. The power of one more, Fire Nation. Now, Ed, repetition produces results. Can you elaborate on this and then share the three principles that go along with this phenomenon? Repetition matters because when you repeat something over and over again, it becomes habitual.
15:14And when you're under stress, any kind of stress, your brain wants to conserve energy and goes into a fear state and it performs your habit or your ritual. Things become reflexive. So when you repeat something over and over again, it becomes a reflexive part of your life. So rather than give you those three, I'll give you something maybe even a little bit stronger if you don't mind, which is that when you – I have a whole thing in the book on your habits. And one of the things you have to realize about the habits that you build, these things that you do repetitiously, is that there's a reason why you do them.
15:47They create an emotion for you. And I talk about in the book, I call it One More Emotion. This may seem not correlated, but it is, brother. You have an emotional home. You do. Some people, that emotion is joy, ecstasy, peace, faith, strength. For others, it's anxiety, worry, fear, chaos, stress, depression. And somehow every single week, no matter who you are, no matter what the external circumstances are, you find a way to get your emotional home. And you may not even want it, but because it's familiar, you get it. Your mind moves towards what's most familiar. So when you begin to evaluate in your life, not do what I want to produce externally.
16:27Everyone writes goals down. I want a million dollars. I want$10 million. I want a jet. I want this. What if you started to get intentional about the emotions you want? I want more peace. I want more joy. I want more strength. I want more confidence, whatever that emotion might be. And then when you do habits repeatedly that produce that emotion, that emotion is the thing that gets you to do it under pressure. And so it's not a matter of just repeating things. It's a matter of it creating an emotion in you that you then want to repeat over and over again because of in your brain, obviously in the prefrontal cortex, not to get really detailed, but you're hardwiring these choices and these behaviors that you do repeatedly linked to the emotion you want from it.
17:10And I can go deeper on that, but for now, I'll leave it at that. Well, I do want to talk about the power of one more. As we kind of start to wind down here, give us one concept from this book that you really want Fire Nation to understand is such a powerful part of what you've created. Well, there's so much in the book, brother, but I think I'll give you, you know, the second chapter of the book, I call it the matrix and everyone's probably seen the matrix. And the reason I do that is I talk a lot about your reticular activating system in your brain, which is the filter that filters into your life, the things that are most important to you and filters out stuff that's not important.
17:45And that's why things can slow down like they did in the matrix. Right. And so I teach you how to program that part of your brain so that if you ever like you buy a new car right now, I'm about to get a Tesla. All of a sudden, man, I'm seeing Teslas everywhere, everywhere, three lanes over other side of the freeway. Why am I seeing them now? They were always there because they become important to me. They've been filtered into my awareness. So what if you could begin to filter into that RAS, that matrix of yours, the things you really want, the relationship, the money, the account, the client, the emotion, the person.
18:18What if that became your Teslas? What if someone could teach you to do that? I can. And I do that in the power of one more. The last thing about that, brother, is that in the Matrix, they call Neo the one. The one. And that's the whole premise of this book, that in every family, me and my wife live at the beach now. I'm looking at the ocean right now. And we were little kids. We would walk on this beach. I'd say, babe, someday I'm going to get you a house on the ocean. She'd go, you are? I had no idea I was going to do it. And I used to think to myself, who are these people? Who the heck lives on the ocean?
18:48Are they like Martians? And I've realized something in my life. When you see a happy family or a successful family, realize that somewhere back in their heritage, that was not a happy and successful family until the one shows up. And the one in that family changed everything. Their finances, their emotions, the way they think, their outlook on life, how they live. The one changes everything and every family that ends up changing. In my family, I'm the one. And for those of you listening to this, in your family, you can be the one that changes it forever, generationally, financially, emotionally, spiritually.
19:23The whole ride is changed by one person in one family. And that's why I wrote this book, The Power of One More. I want you to be the one. I want you to be the neo in your family. And the way to getting there, ironically, is learning how to control your matrix. And that's what the whole book is predicated on. So that's what I would tell you. Ed, this happens every time I hear you talk. You get to this point where a switch is flipped and every hair on the back of my neck stands up. And I know everybody listening gets so fired up too, because you are just so passionate about this. So just enthused about what you've created here.
19:58So give Fire Nation the final call to action. Where can they go to find this book, to get inspired, to have Ed either in their ear with the audio book or in front of them on pages? What do we do? You can go anywhere books are sold, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Target, or you can go to the powerofonemore.com website. And I just want to leave everybody with this thought. You can change your life and you were born to do something great with your life. And if you go to the powerofonemore.com, you watch my podcast, you interact with anything I do, I exist to help you become the one. That's why I do it. There's nothing to upsell you on or anything like that.
20:35and I just firmly believe that you were born to do something totally awesome with your life and you just need a little help in doing it. And so I wrote this book and the idea and the hope and the prayer that I can help you a little bit. And by the way, honor to be with you today, man, contribute just in a really small way to anybody's life I possibly can. Honor goes right back, brother. And Fire Nation, you're the average of the five people that you spend the most time with. And hello, You're hanging out with Ed Milet in JLD today.
