George, say what's up to Fire Nation and share something that you believe about becoming successful that most people disagree with. Hey, Fire Nation. I am so happy to be talking to you guys today. So I think that one thing that I think a lot of people would agree with here, but I don't see it in practice is there, in my opinion, there's absolutely no level of professional or financial success that's worth sacrificing your health for.

2:05In my opinion, being in your early 40s and 50 pounds overweight with a bad knee and a bad back, driving in a sports car to a job that you hate isn't exactly the definition of success. I think health is the new status symbol. And so I think to really live the good life, you have to be feeling good and you have to be healthy. Otherwise, what's the point in all that success? There's no point in having a ski pass for the year if your knees aren't good enough to enjoy it. I love that phrase that health is the new status symbol. I could not agree with that more. I'm just such a big believer in the phrase that the healthy person wants a thousand things.

2:40They want to go skiing. They want to travel. They want to do all these things and they can. The unhealthy person wants one thing and that's to be healthy. So Fire Nation, be in that prior category. Be that healthy person to start with. So you can want a thousand things. And as I mentioned in the intro, we're talking about how healthy just feels good, why optimal wellness should be enjoyable and sustainable. Now I want to talk about why. Why is education about health so important if we can just have somebody like you, George, tell me what to do? I think that's a great question. And honestly, it is something that I had to figure out on my own because I had my own health journey, especially with being an entrepreneur and owning multiple different businesses throughout my life.

3:26And so I think that your audience would agree when I say knowledge is power, right? You can pay somebody to make all of your financial decisions for you too, but obviously, you know, we have accountants for a reason, but I think it's definitely a smarter idea if people educate themselves because then you know exactly how to leverage that information where it matters to you, right? You can be a better advocate for yourself, right? And so health is no different from financial literacy, in my opinion. I think that it's really important to understand where you are and where you need to go, and also what different levers you need to pull in order to get there, because there's a ton of goovers out there telling you what you need.

4:03And I think that while it's very, very important to get help from people who are knowledgeable, I think at the same time, no one's going to look at your health as much as you are for yourself. And so the only way to get there is to make sure that you empower yourself through education. Fire Nation, I'm such a believer in this because, listen, you can meet the best health professionals in the world, and they are awesome people, and they will be so well-meaning in all of these things. But at the same time, they have other clients. They probably have families and kids and lifestyles and problems of their own.

4:34So they are going to give you some amazing advice and guidance and support, and that's what they're supposed to do. But at the end of the day, it's you. Look in the mirror. It's you. It's your life. It's your health. Take control. Now, I think a lot of people are looking for, quote unquote, the best type of exercise for health. What would you tell those people? All right. So I actually have two answers to this question because I get asked this, I'd say almost daily. The best answer I can give you is the best exercise you can do is the one that you actually do. It's the one that you want to do.

5:08It can't be torture, right? And so we can debate about the pros and cons of whether high intensity interval training is better than long, slow, steady state cardio. We can talk about all the specifics, but when it comes down to it, you actually have to show up. So just like in business, just like if you're going to be an entrepreneur, 90 % of that is just showing up every single day with consistency and finding something that you enjoy that will actually get you out there and get you moving. Now, to give you a more specific answer, though, I think this is quite important for people to know, especially because we all, you know, our time's at a premium, right?

5:43We're all struggling to be able to fit in everything every day. And so it's important, I think, for the audience to understand that adaptations for training are very specific, meaning that if you train for marathons, you're probably not going to have the strength to deadlift three times your body weight or vice versa, right? But it's my opinion that most people should be generalists, meaning that if you're a cardio monster, make sure you're getting some resistance training in because that'll fill in all the gaps in your health that you're probably missing. Or if you like to lift weights, but you can't run up the stairs, it's probably a good idea to start looking at some cardio because you really need to strengthen all those weaknesses so that you can be very well-rounded in your health.

6:20Because unfortunately, unlike business, health is really about being a generalist, not being a specialist. And I love that being a generalist because I'm a big believer in the word balance. You need to have a balance. And I can tell you, in my early 20s, just because this kind of person I am, I'm kind of like this all or nothing person, I got into my head that like, you know what? The electrical machine is going to get me into great shape. And so I bought an electrical machine. I put it in my house. And I was on that thing every day, seven days a week for an hour. And guess what? Pound started coming off.

6:50I got lean. I was in great quote unquote shape. But then all of a sudden, like back pain started. And I was having all these issues in my core and stuff because all I was doing was just an hour a day of cardio. By the time I was done with that, I had time for nothing else. I wasn't doing anything else to improve my body. I wasn't really eating that well. I wasn't doing strength training. I wasn't just like challenging my body in a balanced way. And it really unbalanced my body and gave me so much long-term struggle that it took me a long time to recover from because I was just on one end of the spectrum.

7:25I wasn't looking for that balanced situation that George is talking about that I've now have had for many, many years that has helped so, so much. And Fire Nation, this is just one of the many things you need to be thinking about when it comes to optimal wellness that, as I mentioned, should be enjoyable and sustainable. And we're going to talk about very important topics around this focal point when we get back from thanking our sponsors. If you're anything like me, then you're looking forward to a lot of outdoor time this summer. I'm talking about hitting the pool, going on epic hikes, and maybe even getting in a few pickleball matches.

8:01But in order to do all that, you and your team need to work smarter, not harder. That's why we're so excited about HubSpot's integrated AI tech. It's helping teams automate the more tedious parts of running a business. With AI-powered tools built into HubSpot's CRM, you can do research, pull reports, and write copy in a flash. In fact, recent research shows that marketers are already slicing time spent on manual administrative tasks in half thanks to AI from 5 hours to 2.5 hours a day, which amounts to almost 4 weeks of saved time per year. And with 4 weeks of your time back, you could be enjoying a lot more pool time, hiking, and pickleball.

9:51And we've already been kind of pushing some buttons and some levers, some people in Fire Nation that might just be like, oh, I'm in great shape. I do 30 minutes on the Peloton every day and that's all that I do. But I'm getting a great sweat. And also, above the reality of, oh, no, I have this doctor. They're looking after me. They're taking care of me so I don't have to do anything on my own. We're kind of busting in some myths and kind of popping some bubbles here. And I think another thing that a lot of people get into is the fact that they work out regularly. Like they are consistent and maybe they're doing the right balance workout with a good cardio and the strength training and resistance and they're really being balanced there.

10:29But then they're like, you know what, because I'm so consistent with this, I don't really feel like nutrition is that important? Talk about this. For people that do work out regularly, how important is nutrition? How important is nutrition? Well, that depends on how important your health is to you. Not everybody actually takes their health seriously. And so I think if you're the type of person who wants to feel and perform your best, you can't ignore nutrition, right? I think you've lived it yourself. You know what it feels like when you're eating well versus when you're not. I think the benefits for performance, being able to show up every day for the things that you love and the people that you love and being able to be successful in life and in business.

11:06I don't think that there's really much of a debate there that you can't get away with, you can't outwork a bad diet. We'll say that. I'll use myself as an example. I was varsity in three sports. I played a little division one soccer. You know, if you asked me at 18 how I felt, I would have told you like a million bucks, except I was on multiple medications, prescription drugs. I had chronic pain all the time for over a decade at that point in my life. And at 37, I feel better than I did at 18. And it's because I started taking my nutrition seriously. And so, well, you know, I think a lot of people can get away with working out and not minding their nutrition.

11:39I think the point is, is that you don't know how good you can feel until you stop feeling bad all the time. This is such an important topic right here because Fire Nation, George, you said it in a way, but I want to say it in a different way. And by the way, if you like this, you can steal it for me. Just give me credit twice and then you can use it in yours forever. You can't out exercise your mouth. And I see so many people trying to do that. They're just like, you know what? I put in the work in the gym today. I'm going to go home, have three pizzas, three pints of Ben and Jerry's. I'm just going to bow, bow, bow because I've earned it.

12:14Like I've earned that. And they never seem to really move the needle in a great way or they're dealing with just other health issues as a result. So you can't out-exercise your mouth. Now, when it does come to nutrition, something that you and I have actually talked about, and you gave me a book recommendation, Perfect Health Diet, which I've actually started reading. What are some of your recommendations around nutrition? Well, I think that most of my recommendations are very much in line with the latest nutritional research. The problem with that is that, unfortunately, a lot of the guidelines that people are familiar with, and especially when it comes to celebrity gurus online or on television, they don't actually follow what the research shows.

12:54So I'll give you a good example. You know, in the diet that I recommend for my patients and what I've been doing for myself for about 15 years now is most of my protein comes from seafood and actually red meat. And a lot of people get this idea that, you know, saturated fat is bad for you. But the truth is the research shows that it's actually quite good for you. And there's a lot of health benefits that are difficult to get if you don't include red meat and things like saturated fat, including butter and coconut oil, right? And so I think that it's probably a little atypical for most people to understand that it's not only okay to eat that steak, but probably healthful and a good idea.

13:28It can support your hormones and obviously can support muscle mass and physical performance, but also it can improve cognitive performance, which is so important for entrepreneurs and people in business and people are just burning the candle from both ends. We really need to be able to support ourselves that way. And so I would say that that's probably one of the more standout parts of the diet that I recommend. Other than that, a lot of it's things that people know that they should be doing, including more fruits and vegetables. I generally, I recommend if you're looking at your plate, it should be about three quarters vegetables by volume, one quarter protein, but maybe contrary to what a lot of people hear, I recommend that you cover your butter.

14:05I'm sorry, you cover your vegetables in butter and vegetable. I'm sorry, in olive oil to make sure that you're getting all those healthy fats. So just to be clear, I think that it's important to make sure that food should be enjoyable. And you shouldn't necessarily, your diet shouldn't look like you're on some type of special restrictive diet. If I was to cook for you for two weeks, you just think I was a good chef. You know, you're allowed to have really good, tasty food. And a lot of it looks like probably the stuff that your grandmother made when you were growing up. Fire Nation, keep it simple, follow these processes, and just see how you feel.

14:39Like I always love George, because he's always like, hey, keep your finger on the pulse. How do you feel? Like, how does that work for you? Because we are all unique in a lot of ways. And there's going to be certain things that work for certain people in different ways. But there are some core things that are going to help you and going to help most people in a very similar way. Now, one thing that I want to kind of end with, which I think is really ending with a bang, because I'll tell you, it's been my priority, my main focal priority. And I've come so far in this over the years. and that is sleep.

15:10I mean, my sleep is everything to me. Like I have an aura ring, I wake up in the morning, like I check my score, like not obsessively, but like I'm just conscious of how much deep sleep I got, how much REM I got, how much light sleep. If I got a bad score, why did I probably get a bad score? Well, I ate too close to bedtime. Like I just know things and I know how I feel when I sleep well because you're a big proponent of circadian rhythm. So talk about circadian rhythms and why they are so important to our health. Absolutely. So I think circadian rhythms is one of the new buzzwords we've been hearing around the health sphere online, right?

15:46And so very simply put, your circadian rhythms is your body's internal clock. So everything that your body does from digestion, the sleep-wake cycle, when to be awake and alert, when to rest, everything that basically goes into running your body, that is controlled by multiple different internal clocks, collectively known as your circadian rhythms. And the truth is, is that if your rhythms are off, everything is off. The way I like to explain this to people is that it's very clear for most of us, if we have kids or if we have pets, that if you get off your schedule, then they're going to be cranky.

16:20They're not going to behave well. They're going to act out. Their energy is going to be bad. Their mood is going to be bad. And for some reason, we think that we can get away with this too, right? And so I don't have patients that come to me and they work very hard. And sometimes they eat dinner at six o 'clock at night and sometimes they eat at 11 o 'clock at night and they don't understand why their sleep is erratic because, you know, they can't figure it out. But it's very simple when you step back and take a look at it is that actually I like Jocko Willink. He has a really good saying about this.

16:47Discipline equals freedom. And what I mean by that is that I rebel against the schedule. But, you know, as an entrepreneur and someone with ADHD, actually, I find that without that kind of foundational structure in my life, everything falls apart. But if I can keep my schedule consistent with my workouts with my eating times Especially with my wake-up times even more important than your bedtime believe it or not Then I noticed that I feel better. My mood's better. I think better I can be there for the people that I love. I know my performance is better Everything's better at the gym. And so just like with you, you know sleep is that foundation But I think the part that people don't appreciate is that there are many many things that go into setting your internal clock and if you can figure out those levers and those buttons for yourself, then you can really maximize your ROI in terms of how much energy you're putting into it and what you're getting out of it as a result.

17:39And so like you, I think sleep is the game changer for most people. If we could put the effects of good sleep into a pill, we'd all be retired by now, right? Because it's that powerful. I love that. Well, George, you work on that. I will take that pill, my friend, even though I do love the game of waking up and getting a 97 or a 98 sleep score, which I've gotten multiple times. And if I'm not over a 90, I am really figuring things out for the next night because I love that great night's sleep. So George, give us just an overall key takeaway from our entire conversation today before we say goodbye.

18:14Sure. I think simply put that educating ourselves about health is essential for long-term success and life enjoyment, right? Without that, without health, really everything else is kind of pointless. But that being said, unlike maybe some of the more celebrities out there like brian johnson the entrepreneur that's spending two million dollars a year to maintain his health or maybe even reverse aging for the vast majority of people you can really move that needle in a significant way and change how you feel and the way that you perform with very very low technology uh you know low low investments right it's uh it's about hitting the basics but understanding which of those basics is most important to you and then how best to leverage them i think that living a healthy lifestyle especially once you're educated and understand how to leverage those different aspects for yourself is really not that difficult not that not that time consuming and is very approachable for most people and I think that you know especially in the business world I don't think that there's enough energy being put into this people will worry about their return on investment for their money but they don't think about that in terms of their time for you know how they spend it on their health and how that can also maximize their productivity and their success both in their personal and in their professional lives.

19:25All right, George, I think after this conversation, Fire Nation is going to want to consume more of your content. Where do they go to follow you, connect with you? What is your call to action for our listeners today? Well, my call to action is I want everybody to take charge of their health by becoming an active participant in their health journey. We can't drag you there kicking and screaming. You have to walk that path on your own, but with the help of people who are knowledgeable and who can point you in the right direction. And so, you know, my call to action for people would be start educating yourself.

19:56And a great way to start is by following some of my content on social media. We are putting together a very, very comprehensive health program, probably the most health comprehensive program I've ever seen. It's actually the product I wish I had a decade ago when I started on my own journey or when I began on my own journey. And so the idea is that it's a six month program to teach people how to take the best care of themselves where they are with what they have, right? And so it's not a six-month detox program. It's not a get into shape and get a six-pack in three months kind of thing. It's how to learn how best to take care of your health and those around you now and for the rest of your lives.

20:36And so people can find that. I'm on social media as Dr. Morris DC or Dr. Morris DC on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. and the company name is Rethrival Health because we're about thriving and we want to bring that back for people because it's more accessible than I think most people realize. Fire Nation, you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with. You've been hanging out with GM and JLD today, so keep up that heat for sure, Fire Nation. 21:16For that, we salute you, brother, and we'll catch you on the flip side. JLD, thank you so much. And thanks to your audience. You're the best, man.
