Entrepreneurs on Fire: Episode Summary

Episode Title

How to Overcome Mental Blocks and Grow Your Business Faster with Abi Levine

Episode Description

In this episode, host John Lee Dumas chats with Abi Levine, a transformational coach who specializes in money mindset and manifestation. Abi shares her journey from being a homeless foster child to a thriving single mom who has helped clients manifest over $1.5 billion. She blends scientific principles with magical thinking to assist in overcoming mental barriers that hinder business growth.

Key Takeaways

  • Breaking Out of Comfort Zones:
  • While it is essential to leave comfort zones for success, our brains instinctively want to keep us within them to ensure safety. Understanding this can help mitigate feelings of inadequacy when faced with progress.
  • Dual Fears of Failure and Success:
  • Entrepreneurs often grapple with the fear of both failure and success. The fear of success can be rooted in deeper fears, such as the inability to manage newfound responsibilities or the anxiety of losing what one has gained.
  • Self-Trust and Indecision:
  • A lack of self-trust can lead to feelings of perpetual indecision, preventing entrepreneurs from making confident choices to advance their businesses.

Highlights of the Discussion

  1. Understanding Mental Blocks:
  2. The Roller Coaster of Entrepreneurship:
  3. The journey of entrepreneurship is likened to a roller coaster, where feelings of motivation can drastically fluctuate. Acknowledging these feelings without taking them personally is crucial.
  • Homeostasis Response:
  • The brain’s need to maintain homeostasis can cause self-sabotage as it perceives any significant change (positive or negative) as potentially life-threatening.
  1. Addressing Negative Self-Talk:
  2. Listening to the Inner Critic:
  3. Instead of resisting negative thoughts, it can be beneficial to acknowledge and understand them. This can reduce their power and allow for healthier responses.
  • Counteracting Doubts:
  • Responding to negative thoughts with acknowledgment and a firm decision to continue despite them allows for the re-establishment of control.
  1. Managing Overwhelm:
  2. Permission to Take Breaks:
  3. Abby encourages listeners to take breaks when feeling overwhelmed, suggesting that stepping away can rejuvenate creativity and motivation.
  1. Visualization Techniques:
  2. Higher Frequency Visioning:
  3. This technique involves visualizing future successes in a compelling manner, which helps to reduce anxiety about achieving those goals by framing them within a comfortable threshold.

Final Thoughts

Abi emphasizes that the next level of success is often closer than perceived. With the right tools and strategies, entrepreneurs can overcome their mental blocks and achieve the fulfilling lives they desire.

Abby, say what's up to Fire Nation and share something that you believe about becoming successful that most people disagree with.

1:51Hi, John. Hi, everybody. I'm so excited to be here today. Well, this is one of my platforms, actually. And it's kind of controversial, especially when I'm talking to entrepreneurs. I believe that you can be wildly successful without hustling. And not only that, I believe that it can be easeful. I believe you can actually enjoy the process and you don't have to sweat blood and tears in order to hit that level of mega wealth that you're going for. Who doesn't want to enjoy the process, Fire Nation? I mean, so often we're hearing that you've got to grind your face off, bleed from your eyeballs. I mean, that's just not true across the board.

2:35There's a lot of ways to go about this. And today we'll be talking about how to overcome mental blocks to grow your business faster. And I want to start off with the reality. And my audience knows this, Abby. I mean, entrepreneurship, it can be a roller coaster of a ride. What is happening when we're on fire literally one day and then the next day it's ice cold. We don't even want to get out of bed. What is happening there? Oh, this is, and I know everybody can relate to this. I know you can, I know I can. We've all had these moments. And the most fascinating thing is that, okay, so we're usually taking it personally.

3:11I want to address the pain first before I, uh, before I let you guys know what's happening. We're usually taking it really personally, right? We're saying I suck. I'm not motivated. Something is wrong with me. I've lost interest. I can't hold the vision. I'm being lazy, right? It's very internally focused. And what we don't know is what's really happening is that we've actually hit a threshold of either action, income, the possibility, or a level of success that our mind and our body do not perceive as safe, right? Everybody always says you've got to get outside of your comfort zone in order to be successful.

3:56And that is absolutely true, right? Except for the fact that the brain and the body have one job, and that is to keep you inside of your comfort zone, because that's what your brain and body has deemed where you are safe, where they can keep you alive. And the brain doesn't have the capacity to be able to tell what's good change and what's bad change. All change feels life-threatening. So the moment you start to do well, the moment you start to get some traction, you get some leads coming in, you get some big deals going, you're raising your prices and people are actually saying yes, then the mind actually goes into what feels like self-sabotage when we take it personally but all it's doing is actually trying to keep us safe it's called homeostasis and our body uses everything in its arsenal to get us to stop so it could be self-defeating thoughts or memories of previous painful moments that we consider failures it could be that lack of energy that lack of interest of even getting out of bed.

5:05It can feel like depression. It can feel like rage. It can feel like absolute apathy for everything in life. Our interests no longer interest us. It could be a bad mood. It could be picking a fight with our partner, or it could even be as radical as getting us into accidents in order to get us to stop. Isn't that wild? It is absolutely wild. And I mean, Fire Nation, I have talked about this before on the podcast, where the imposter syndrome is there. And the reality, if you look back in time, it's probably one reason why Abby and I are talking right now, because our great, great, great ancestors all the way back thousands of years ago, they were in a cave.

5:48They didn't go out of that cave at nighttime because their imposter syndrome told them not to, and they did not get eaten by a saber-toothed tiger. And then they were able to reproduce and so on and so forth. And here we are today. So it's just this innate thing that a lot of us have, that all of us have on some levels, but it's how do we deal with it? But still, Abby, there are these voices in our head and they're literally screaming at us that our best option is to quit. How do we deal with these voices? Oh yeah. Oh man. These MFers, right? Gee whiz, they can cut you off at the knees. um so first of all this is going to sound a little counterintuitive but that's what i love about what i teach everything i teach sounds exactly the opposite of what you should do um so the very first thing that you want to do is you actually want to hear them out and i don't mean like listen to them and agree with them i mean imagine that you're a judge in a courtroom and you are impartially seeing what they have to say because here's the kicker when When we start to push against them, when we start to like try to force them away, when we try to force our way through these thoughts, we're actually physically creating more pushback.

7:00We are creating more resistance when we try to resist these thoughts. When you listen, all of the energy that's behind these thoughts like literally becomes impotent. It just kind of dissolves and fades away. And now you have like you've got the evidence. you know what your brain is trying to tell you and you know why it's trying to keep you safe so you know why your brain is telling you uh this bs and now you know what your brain is trying to tell you the next step is on some level we kind of get into agreement and i don't mean we're saying yes voice i am a failure i'm gonna give up you're right i should stop no we're not doing that But let's say that your voice is telling you, like, you've made all of these mistakes.

7:48Why do you keep trying? You know this isn't for you. Why do you keep going? It's not going to work for you. This is not meant for you. This is only for other people who have the secret key to the secret club, da-da-da-da-da, right? And so when those voices are coming up and they're being really specific, you just say to them, you know what? You might be right. And if you have made a lot of mistakes, you can say to that voice, you're right. have made a lot of mistakes, have messed up a bunch. And what? Am I just going to lay down and die? Am I just literally going to stop trying? Am I just going to stop?

8:26No, of course not. So even though there may be some seeds of truth, which is what your brain knows to use against you, by the way, there might be some seeds of truth in the way that your brain is distorting your perceptions of what has happened. And then you don't have to like just straight up deny that you can acknowledge. Yeah, sure. Maybe I've made a lot of mistakes. Yeah. I failed a bunch of times. And what? Am I just going to stop? I mean, let's really just going to stop right here where I'm at. No, I'm going to keep going and I'm probably going to make some more mistakes and so be it. Right.

9:04And then you can get aggressive with them. If they're like bullying you, you can actually stand up to the voices and just be like, shut up, go over there. You are not helping anyone today. I am not listening to you anymore. You can even imagine that the voices have a volume dial, which this works with everything, by the way, but those particular voices have a volume dial and you can just turn them from wherever they are on the dial all the way down to zero and because of how the brain works it actually works like this is an incredibly effective method to use to get those voices uh to turn all the way down and then the last thing that i'll always say when it gets too intense let's say that you're not in your right mind these beliefs have you trapped in a loop and you just can't think straight you can't remember these tools that I'm telling you right now, and you're just starting to feel like a pressure cooker.

10:04When you get into that moment, put it all down. Just put it down. Every single bit of it. Your business, your goals, just put it down. Go for a walk. Take the weekend. Don't respond to emails. Don't respond to text messages. Don't check your numbers. Just step away. So in my world, I give people permission to quit. I quit. I probably quit my business like twice a month. And I'm like, I'm done. And then I put it down and then I do exactly what it is that I want. I have fun. I play. I remember like some of the things that I love about being alive and I rejuvenate. And then by the end of the weekend, I'm like, okay, it's time to unquit.

10:52Right? So if you're going to quit, like also give yourself equal permission to unquit at any time. And these seem to be some like really effective ways to deal with these voices. Fire Nation, if you're resonating with some of the things that Abby is saying, she is just getting started. We have so much more coming as soon as we get back from thanking our sponsors. Now, Abby, I've done well over 4 ,500 episodes of Entrepreneurs on Fire. And a lot of people listen because they're looking for the rules to success, how to be successful mentally, physically, health-wise, family-wise, relationship-wise, business-wise. They're looking for success. But what I think is really interesting, and I want you to speak to this, is that it is actually possible to want to be successful, which I know our listeners are, and also to be afraid of success at the same time.

14:48So talk to us about that. Yes, it is so fascinating. In fact, you know what I found in my experience is that most entrepreneurs carry both a fear of failure and a fear of success, which is kind of wild, right? And it keeps us trapped in this very tight space. And the thing that I think is really interesting is that most often the fear of success is actually rooted in just a deeper fear of failure, right? I'm afraid of being successful because what happens if I get too big? I can't manage it and everything falls. What happens if I make too much money? I make terrible decisions about it and everything is ruined, right?

15:40I don't have money to pay my bills or pay my people. What happens if I can't carry that much responsibility of having an empire that humongous, right? And this one, this kicker, I'm too afraid of tasting what life would be like when it's better. And so it's much and then losing it and knowing what I've lost. So it's much easier for me to just stay right here because then I don't have to go through the extreme pain of knowing what I'm missing out. Now, one thing, Abby, that we just need to realize is that at some point, self-doubt will start to derail our momentum. When this happens, what the heck do we do?

16:28Yeah, man, that self-doubt can be crippling. And what is usually happening is it's coming from a fear that's hidden. that is secretly saying, I can't do this. It could be from past events, and I will get to what we do about that. Don't worry, I just want to give just a little bit of context so we can understand where that self-doubt is coming from. So it could be from past events where we made a mistake that turned out really badly, and we've lost our trust in our ability to make choices, to make positive choices that are going to actually lead us in a good direction. We've lost our trust in our ability to be flexible when we hit obstacles.

17:10And so when we are in that place of self-doubt, it's like we hit an obstacle and it feels like an impossible barrier rather than what it is, which is just something to go around or underneath or over or through or ignore completely if it really isn't doing much damage. And so, you know, so this lack of self-trust creates this feeling of perpetual indecision where we just kind of almost take a step forward, but then pull back because there's just not that, that like faith in ourselves. So in order to break out of this loop, the first thing you're going to want to do is pause and redirect your attention to something else because when we're in this loop of self-doubt usually there's a bunch of stuff happening in our unconscious mind that we can't see lots of limiting beliefs lots of fears that are coming up um and so it's got us under kind of a spell when we're in this this feeling this energy we're literally almost hypnotized by the self-doubt and what it's telling us that we can and can't do and so that's why you just want to break state it's almost like you're snapping yourself out of the spell.

18:24So if you're in your office, get up, go outside. If you are on a phone call, like obviously if you have to finish the phone call, finish it, but then don't, don't move to the next thing, like change your state, watch a kitten video, um, you know, lay down and, uh, just take a few deep breaths, uh, and you just, just snap out. That's how you can snap out of this state of being. That leads into what I wanted to really talk about next because we want to be in the best frame of mind to conquer our day. So walk us through these best practices. Like let's just start with the best practices for Fire Nation.

19:05Yes, yes, yes, yes. One of my favorite practices is something that I call higher frequency visioning. There are versions of this that you've probably encountered, especially you've been working on personal development for quite some time but it is based in the law of physics and it's really um it's really simple to track so essentially what i have my clients do is imagine uh one aspect of their life sometime in the future and if you have something that's really compelling to you like your business your finances your love life a particular relationship something that you really would like to improve then i encourage you to start with that one.

19:49And essentially what you'll do is it's much easier to do with your eyes closed. So I usually have people, you know, sit, relax, recline, close your eyes, even if it's just for five or 10 minutes and imagine the version of your life as it's going to look like and most importantly feel like in the future. Okay, so let's take money since most entrepreneurs really care about getting their bottom line up validly, right? So let's say that you're sitting at 100K. What we're going to do is we're going to imagine the next level, okay? Yes, you want to get to six figures, multiple six figures and seven figures.

20:32Yes, absolutely. But we're going to look at the next level because what we want to do is we want to keep you within the threshold of what your brain deems okay. It's not your current comfort zone, but your brain can easily stretch to doubling your income. Once you get past double your brain's homeostasis and like fear-mongering tactics start to kick in and sabotage you. So, you know, look at what double your income would look like and feel like. And we're talking, you know, and you can pick a different aspect of your life each time you do this high frequency visioning practice. But let's say that you start with waking up in the morning, knowing that you are now sitting at$200 ,000 on autopilot per year.

21:21What's that feel like? How does that feel in your body? What needs to shift? What is different about what you do next? Your thoughts? How does your business look now that you are doubled? things like that right and the most important thing is as you imagine going through your day it's feeling what it feels like and you might need to go up a few levels of income before you release the anxiety right and you can do this practice with with higher goals and it is good to stretch yourself but at the very beginning i do recommend just imagine just kind of your life was double as good as it is right now.

22:09Does that make sense? Makes a lot of sense. And Fire Nation, I really hope that you're able to absorb what Abby's sharing because this is the type of thing that can shift your mindset, shift your day, shift your future. So Abby, give us one key takeaway from everything we talked about here today that you really want to make sure Fire Nation gets. What's that one thing? The most important thing to hear is that that next level of success that you've been looking for is so much closer than you have previously believed. You might feel like there's so much standing in the way of what you're trying to accomplish.

22:47And I just want you to know that everything that feels like it's standing in the way, it's much thinner. It's much less dense than you previously have believed. OK, so definitely keep going. You absolutely will have the life of your choosing. One hundred percent. There is nothing in existence that can stop you when you have the right tools. Yes. Abby, if Fire Nation is just really digging what you're putting down here, how do they connect with you? What is your call to action for our listeners today? Yes, yes, yes. I have a new, a brand new game called the Science of Manifestation game, which tracks you through science and teaches you how to leverage science to get exactly what you want with as little effort and time as possible.

23:43So I would love to invite anybody who resonates with what I'm saying to hop in the game. You know, let's play. Let's remember why we're doing this. And let's make tons of freaking money along the way. Fire Nation, let's make tons of freaking money along the way, because why not? You know, I love the fact that people say, hey, John, money can't buy you happiness. And guess what? There's a lot of truth to that, but I can tell you what, money can definitely buy you some smiles when you're able to sit down, write a big check to an organization that you believe in and be a philanthropist, help people who are in need.

24:21That can be very fulfilling too. So don't be afraid of money. Don't be afraid of going for those seven figures and beyond because of all those reasons. And you're the average of the five people you spend the most time with. You've been hanging out with AL and JLD today. So keep up the heat. And for links to everything we talked about, visit eofire.com, type Abby in the search bar, that's A-B-I, and the show notes page will pop right up. Abby, one more time, share that call to action. Yes, join us, join me in my science of manifestation game. It's going to be a blast. Abby, thank you for sharing your truth, your knowledge, your value with Fire Nation.

24:58For that, we salute you and we'll catch you on the flip side. Thanks for having me.
