Danny, say what's up to Fire Nation and share something that you believe about becoming successful that most people disagree with. Hey, thank you so much for having me, John. It's a pleasure to be here.
1:21I was on your podcast so many years ago and you've done so many thousands of interviews since then. I admire your dedication and your commitment and thank you for having me again. I would say that in life, there are no fixed rules. And I think that everyone is looking for a set of guidelines or a set of principles or best practices. And I am someone who has gone out in the world and made up my rules as they go and burned down all the old ones. So I'm very excited to share a lot of what I've learned on this journey with you. It's going to be a great episode, Fire Nation. And as Danny mentioned, it was almost 10 years ago, March 12th of 2015, when Danny was on the show for the first time.
2:07And now he's back and we're talking about how to unlimit yourself and unlock your potential. So you are a digital nomad. So tell us about your lifestyle as a digital nomad, as influenced by the concepts in your book. I started on this journey back after university and pretty much been a full-time freestyle traveler. And I come from an entrepreneurial background. Everyone in my family is entrepreneurs. And so I just packed my bags. I had one backpack, carry-on bag, and I booked one-way tickets all around the world. I started in South America. Then I did all of Asia. I've gone around Europe and Africa and just living abroad, living in different cultures and countries, studying different languages and running my business online along the way.
2:56And this was maybe in 2009 or so, before I ever heard the term digital nomad. It didn't even exist then. So yeah, it's been quite a journey. And how has it influenced what I teach? That's an excellent question. So when I was around 20 years old, I knew that I wanted to be a writer, but I didn't have much life experience to speak up or anything really worth writing about. So I figured, all right, I'm just going to put myself out there in the world. I was sitting at a cafe in my hometown and I made this decision one day that I was just going to go out and collect as much experience as I could. I had one simple rule that if I encountered a fork in the road, I would always take it.
3:34You know, always say yes to every new opportunity, every adventure. You know, somebody invites me to go join a class on something, then I'll, yes, let's go do it. You know, basket weaving, whatever it is. An amazing thing is that when you live your life this way with no structure or template, it is that there are no real rules. You can make up the rules that work for you. You make the decisions, you learn how to make decisions very quickly. And at first it really felt like it was me going against the world. And so, you know, I really dedicated myself to improving myself and learning all of the life hacks, anything I could to have more fun in life, more passion, freedom, and to make my goals come true, you know, by whatever means necessary.
4:17And so I've gone all around the world, dozens of countries, all kinds of adventures. I've had a blog podcast, and I've interviewed a bunch of people that are living these unconventional lifestyles to really see what makes them tick. And I've always been so fascinated by it. It is a fascinating topic. And I will say there's so many exciting things about being a digital nomad. I mean, you're traveling the world, you're getting to experience adventures and new cultures and food. I mean, I can remember so vividly after I was in the army, I did some really cool things. I backpacked all of India for four months.
4:50I actually did Nepal and did this 12 day Annapurna trek to the base camp. And then I did Guatemala for four months and Honduras. And I was really just traveling and experiencing all of this. I wasn't trying to run a business at the same time. Like I was just trying to experience life because I had been in the military for four years and I kind of thought that I deserved that break. And then of course I came back and got down to business. But unfortunately what never occurred to me during that time, because this was like 2007, 2008, I never thought that I could start running a business or at least generate some revenue while I was traveling.
5:21It just never really occurred to me that I could do that. And again, I say that's unfortunate just because I could have, it could have been a really cool experience. But I think what holds a lot of people back, Danny, is that they're like, well, building a team is so important it. And I can't build a team if I'm always traveling like different time zones. And how do I establish that team and build that team and have all this stuff? But the reality is we're living in 2025 and beyond now. I mean, that's artificial intelligence. That's where AI comes in. Talk to us about how AI can actually be a great equalizer for entrepreneurs and specifically digital nomad entrepreneurs.
5:57Yeah, that's a great point. I feel like a lot of people feel like AI is very important. It's kind of like the discovery of fire, you know, where it's going to change humanity, but we don't know all of the uses and implications for it yet. And I will say that I'm an optimist, so I like to look at it through a positive lens to see the potential. And I think that this revolution with AI and ChatGPT is probably the greatest thing that ever happened to entrepreneurs, to anyone who thinks outside of the box, anyone who has ideas that they want to build. It's never been easier to come up with any idea and to use AI or technology to build everything.
6:34You know, create a version of minimal viable product and start getting your first customers on the same day. I've launched businesses this way and side hustles using AI and a lot of the tools that I have. And it's so incredible to me. You know, just to give you some perspective, I started out traveling like I was green. I was fresh out of university. You know, I didn't know what I was going to eat when I went to Brazil. And, you know, what if I ran out of money or I go to the hospital, I had all these, you know, fears and stuff like this. And so I was kind of playing it a little bit safe. I was doing SEO, um, had a web design agency, uh, working for clients, uh, in the United States.
7:11Um, and if I had chat GPT back in those days, my whole life probably could have been different because then I wouldn't have to, you know, work for others that way for clients, build other people's businesses and ideas. Um, because I can have an idea and then just like put up a website, have all the copy written, um, have all the marketing copy written and just be putting it out there. Uh, any idea that I have, like I had this idea for, to, to launch retreats in different exotic locations like Nepal and in Greece and places like this. And I was able to just, you know, start getting a waiting list for that in like one day, no, no time flat.
7:48Um, and so, you know, it's all about speed of implementation. It's super important because if you can bring your ideas to life faster and easier and without any expenses, it can really change your life. It's amazing. And in my case, I no longer have to work trading my time for dollars because if I have an idea for something I can sell, I can just go out and sell it. And yeah, I mean, I'm sure you probably have something that you can add to that, right? Based on your own experience. Absolutely. And I really did find that when I was traveling, I just thought that I didn't have the opportunity to create a business that was worth creating because, of course, especially back then, it was like these sketchy internet cafes with bad internet.
8:31And, you know, again, it was just me. There wasn't like virtual assistants that were available as readily as they are today with like Upwork and other companies. And then, of course, AI. So it's just such so different now with just all the opportunities. I mean, Starlink is just providing great internet now to everybody everywhere. But I want to really have you dive into practical steps for leveraging AI to validate ideas, to scale businesses, and to stay not just ahead, but way ahead of your competition. What are those steps? I've always been in the kind of advertising marketing side of things, running an advertising agency.
9:08I've also been a growth hacker, trying to find the best ways to get the best results with the most efficient use of resources in terms of marketing. and first of all I think that obviously everything that humans used to have to do you can create yourself using AI with a snap of your fingers websites advertising creative marketing copy you know there's this website namelix namelix.com which I love and you put in your idea and it'll design logos for you and come up with business names or project names in no time at all and it's like magic. And in my opinion, as a marketer, the most important way to grow any kind of business is to create conversations with other human beings.
9:51Businesses grow from conversations. And so you can focus more of your time on building these relationships, creating these conversations with potential prospects, partners, podcasters like yourself. And you can use AI in the background, like the wizard behind the curtain, you know, helping to support you in these endeavors. and then secondly if you want to you know build a business what I say is what's the difference between a one dollar bill and a one hundred dollar bill the paper the material is exactly the same but they each have a different value and so whenever I want to improve one of my business projects or you know make my business more valuable I'll focus on how can I add more value to it basically and the amazing thing is that ChatGPT can help us as like a partner like a consultant there.
10:39We can ask it questions like this. We can put all the information from our website or, you know, take copy information from our competitor's website and put it in a chat GPT. And it can help you come up with, you know, new ways to create money out of thin air, how to offer more value to your customers, how to create more value-added services, how to create a better quality product so that you can charge more, so that you can retain, lifetime customers and stuff like this. And so if I want to get an edge over my competitors and make my customers more happy, that's where I will start. I will focus on like, okay, how do we add more value to this?
11:17How do we make our customers not only satisfied, but enthused? What are other things that we can offer? What are other markets that we can target for this? So I'll start by asking those questions and then AI is excellent for helping do the research. Fire Nation, it is excellent for doing that research, for helping you expand, giving you new ideas. I mean, I had my nephew in town, and he has this great idea for a YouTube show about anime, but he was struggling coming up with ideas every single day. And I said, hey, let's ask ChatGPT to do it. And I said, ChatGPT, give us 50 ideas on this topic.
11:52And boom, there they were. They were great. We actually ended up picking the best 10. Then we said, okay, these are your best 10. Now give us 40 more based off of this top 10 list. And then we had 50 great answers, which were 50 great episodes for him because we're utilizing that chat GPT in a very powerful and amazing way. Now we have a lot more to talk about Fire Nation when we get back from thanking our sponsors. Is this your year to grow a successful business? Traveling has always been one of my biggest passions. You get to experience different cultures, see places that are impossible to capture through a lens.
13:35These are a couple of the many reasons why I'm so excited for my Nepal trip later this year to trek part of Annapurna. So if you're like me and traveling this year, don't let your home just sit there, host on Airbnb. Even though you might be thinking that hosting will be overwhelming, especially when you're traveling, think again. with the co-host network. It's easier than ever and it's also a great way to earn some extra cash. Now you can hire a high quality local co-host to take care of your home and your guests. They can do everything from creating your listing to managing reservations to messaging guests and providing onsite support.
14:10They can even help with design and styling. So if you've got an extended trip coming up and you need a little help hosting while you're away, you could hire a co-host to do the work for you. Find a co-host at airbnb.com slash host. Danny, I want to dive right in because you have something called the Effortless Action Protocol, EAP. Tell us more. I like to say that we have two different modes that we're in. We have our creative free-flowing mode when we're performing, when we're playing music, when we're writing something. And then we have this part of us that is very analytical. It's judging things.
14:49It's assessing things. It's trying to find the best option between different competing options. And so what I try to do is I try to encourage people to engage in that state of flow, like if they're writing or if they're performing, by shutting off their inner critic. And so one reason why people really run into writer's block and creative block is because they're doubting themselves all along the way. They're judging whether what they've written is good or whether they're performing well enough. And so you really have to learn how to shut that part of your mind off. And I've done a lot of research on this, and I talk about this in the book.
15:27But basically, there's two different modes in the brain. One is the default mode network, when we're at rest, when we're present in the moment, when we're meditating. And that's really conducive to flow, to creativity. and then we have the task positive network which is when we're thinking and we're you know like we're analyzing things we're we're judging things we're trying to make the best decision where are we going to go eat what are we going to wear are we going to swipe right are we going to swipe left this this kind of stuff and so what I really try to encourage within the book and I have strategies on this is how to engage in those states of flow and I have a whole bunch of exercises and techniques.
16:06I would love to get more into it on this podcast, but I do have some free sample chapters that people can download if they're interested in the topic. Well, I think that they are interested in the topic because this is something that I know a lot of entrepreneurs do struggle with, just like rapid learning. Because listen, there's so much information out there. It's just like, where do we start? Where do we actually go? That's why things like Blinkist have become so popular over the years because they do book summaries and very concise and meaningful and valuable ways. So let's talk about something that you have termed rapid learning acceleration.
16:42How can we apply this method to master new skills? First thing to understand is that anytime that we try something new, we always face that internal resistance. We have a mental barrier getting in our way. And I like to liken it to a metaphor where if you imagine like a rocket ship as it's launching, it has to achieve what's called escape velocity and it has to expend a lot of effort a lot of energy just to to lift off and then once it lifts off it becomes easier and easier because momentum takes over and i think it's the same way when it comes to learning anything new or trying anything new uh our internal resistance puts up this barrier because it wants to stick with what is familiar it wants to stick with a routine and overcoming that resistance can take a lot of energy, it can take a lot of willpower, which is why I say that you want to make the requirement for success as easy as possible.
17:34I listened to a tape from Tony Robbins probably 15 years ago, and he said that he's successful at something if he gives his best and he learns something. And so it basically makes it impossible to fail. And that's what you have to do is that you have to make it really easy to take action and to build that momentum. If you want to start flossing, floss only one tooth. If you want to start exercising, maybe commit to 10 minutes of intense exercise a day. You want to make it easy to start and to commit and make it easy for you to succeed. And it's actually a sneaky way to push or to get around that resistance and make your life easier.
18:09And so to give you an example, I spent a few years living here in Thailand. I speak Thai fluently along with some other languages and I take a really unconventional approach. If I were to go and open a big textbook with all of the characters and have to memorize everything, I would probably give up after like two pages because I'm already bored with it. And what I did instead is I just, you know, I try to commit to learning at least one word every day. When I'm here, you know, I learn a new word each time and then I build up my vocabulary that way and I save everything that I learned. And so it's really, really easy now, especially with AI and technology, almost like our minds are fusing with the AI, with all of the knowledge that is out there.
18:49And so I've kind of developed systems for learning and skill acquisition, which I teach also in the book. Like if you go to YouTube, for example, you can search any topic and you can use these extensions like Glass is one of my favorite. You can transcribe different videos on any topic from all these experts. You export it as a PDF and then you can import that in ChatGPT. And then it has all of that information from all these different perspectives, all these different experts. And I call it the insight multiplier effect because you have information from a variety of different sources and it can analyze all the different data for you.
19:23So you don't have to spend six hours watching all those videos and trying to memorize everything. It's really amazing, John. I love that. And I love these examples, Fire Nation, that you can take and apply to what you're doing in your life, in your business right now. And with all the awesome things we've talked about here today, we're talking effortless action protocol. We're talking rapid learning acceleration, leveraging AI and so much more. If you could boil things down to just one thing, Danny, what is one thing that our listeners should take away from our conversation today and your book, Unlimit?
19:57I think the overarching concept of the book and what I want to teach people is that it's important to understand the law of requisite variety, which is also known as Ashby's Law. And I believe that the individual in any group who is the most adaptable will always come out on top given enough time in the long term. In order for us to properly deal with the diversity and complexity of challenges and problems that the world throws at us, we need to have a repertoire of responses and a quality of flexibility that's equal to these problems. And so I think the trouble is that most people don't truly feel that they can adapt.
20:39You know, people are hardwired to resist change. And so they believe that the circumstances of their lives are fixed, so to speak, due to factors outside of their control. It could be, you know, their childhood or their environment or relationship with someone. And I believe that if you want to grow the most in life and have the most success, you need to stop thinking that any of these rules are fixed. Everything's negotiable. You must always be adaptable and learn to think and rethink everything that you think you know. Always keep learning and experimenting, finding new and different ways to do things.
21:11And even if you have your ups and downs along the way, I guarantee you that you will have a really rich and interesting life. Definitely more unique than any of your friends for sure. And speaking of an interesting life, you're potentially, and it looks probably, hosting and holding a pretty incredible event in late August of 2025 in Nepal, specifically Pokhara, where I've been fortunate enough to have visited in the past. And I just want you to give a very quick summation of this event you're planning. And Fire Nation, there is a strong possibility that I will be attending and speaking at this event and then doing the incredible trek that is planned afterwards, potentially for the Annapurta base camp.
21:57So Danny, tell us more. Yeah, sure. So you've been to Nepal. I mean, you know how amazing. Unreal. The people, the culture, it's unbelievable. Yeah, it's like a different world. And so I've always wanted to do something there. And I actually wanted to have, initially, I wanted to have my own house there. I just needed to have like a helicopter to get up on top of the mountain. But yeah, so I started organizing these retreats, co-living in Nepal, where we invite remote workers and online business owners to come and work under the Himalayas in a beautiful location. And really, my vision is to open up Nepal to bring these talented people together and to network, to learn, to grow, to do business in the most beautiful location on earth.
22:46And so what we're doing at the end of August this year is we're hosting Nomad Base Camp in Pokhara. So we have a beautiful location in Five Star Resort overlooking the lakeside in Pokhara, surrounded by the Himalayas. And we're looking to bring some of the best thought leaders like yourself to really share the best unconventional lessons and wisdoms, wisdom like you've learned along the way and like myself. So we're going to have an amazing group there. It's going to be a great opportunity to make connections. We're going to have all kinds of unique experiences, trekking trips, you'll be able to indulge in the culture, try the food.
23:27So if you're looking for something outside of your comfort zone, I would encourage you to take the leap. It's actually not so uncomfortable. Once you get there, I'm sure you'll fall in love with it because it's a magical place. So give us a call to action for where our listeners can go to find out more about your book in Purchase Unlimited. And then also about this event in Nepal. Thank you so much for having me, first of all. And again, the new book is called Unlimit and we're launching on Kickstarter. So I'm sure that campaign will be live by the time this goes, this episode goes live. And really the book just talks about everything that I've learned over the last 15 plus years, you know, running my businesses on the road in locations like Florianopolis, Brazil and Penang, Malaysia, and really like everything I had to learn to improve my focus and my willpower, concentration, maximize my time to do all the things that I want to do, accomplish all these goals.
24:26And so if you want to learn everything that I've learned along the way, I lay it all out in the spoke. I have all the different strategies, different kinds of techniques, because I want to help you. I want to pass along all this knowledge to you so that you can grow and basically unlimit yourself and break through those barriers that you have that are holding you back from getting the life that you want. So that will be on Kickstarter, and I guess we can share the link to that campaign. And if you go to the campaign page, we actually have seven free chapters on there that you can download and read immediately.
25:00And if you can share the campaign, if you think it's a cool project, we'd love your support. And as far as the Nomad Basecamp, Should we put a link to that as well, John? What kind of information should I share? Yep, let's put a link to it. It'll be on the show notes page, Fire Nation, a link to the Kickstarter campaign, to the event. Just go to eofire.com, type Danny, D-A-N-N-Y in the search bar, and this episode will come up with the show notes, and we will have the links there. Anything else, Danny? Yeah, so that website actually is digitalnomadsnepal.com as well. So if they want to go to the website, they can remember that URL.
25:35and we have the early bird discount right now. It's only$1.99 for a ticket. And we'll have a WhatsApp group chat for everyone that joins to help you arrange accommodation, arrange airfare, all the information about visas, flights, so you don't have to worry about a thing. And come out and join John Lee Dumas and myself in Nepal. It's going to be a once-in-a-lifetime experience, I guarantee you. And how far in advance do you have to start planning with the visas? You can get the visa at the airport when you arrive. So it's very easy. Cool. Easy, easy. We even have all the suggested flight routes.
