In short

Leveling up life through mindset, motherhood, and entrepreneurship—balancing work and parenting, using business-style metrics, and building community.

Guest

Lisa Druxman, founder of Fit4Mom (fitness and community for moms), best-selling author and speaker/podcaster. Background includes starting Stroller Strides 24 years ago as a new mom in San Diego; it expanded to nearly 2,000 locations with hundreds of franchisees.

Key claims

Success comes from small daily steps, not quantum leaps; create a “dashboard” for life using KPIs (joy, habits, priorities). Mom entrepreneurs often work only 11–15 hours/week, so time-blocking and focusing on the “20%” that drives results matters. Train mindset by noticing negative thoughts and doing “do-over thoughts”; reframe challenges as “how it’s happening for me.” Community is essential; loneliness predicts premature death.

Notable examples

Stroller Strides growth; franchisees across many professions; “village/community” chapter; “glass refillable” mindset framing.

1:20John Lee Dumas:Get a 30-day free trial and my full bonus stack that includes a 15-minute private call with me and much more at highlevelfire.com, highlevelfire.com. Lisa, say what's up to Fire Nation and share something that you believe about becoming successful that most people disagree with. First of all, fired up to be here. So exciting to be back after a decade or however long it's been. Um, something that I think just that you are willing to do a little bit more than everybody else. It's not about perfection, but just got to be willing to do more than the person next to you. Fire Nation, we're talking about leveling up your life with mindsets, with motherhood, and with entrepreneurship.

2:09John Lee Dumas:And I want to give Fire Nation a quick rundown of the origin story that led to the foundation, the founding of Fit for Mom? Yeah, origin story was I wasn't looking to start a business. I was a brand new mom, crazy, 24 years ago, and I was a fitness professional and figured, well, I can help moms get back into shape after having a baby and they can help me with everything I need to know about motherhood. Really, I was just looking for a community because I knew nothing about motherhood. And apparently I wasn't the only one looking for that. I started a class called Stroller Strides, and it took off here in San Diego, and it took off nationwide.

2:48So here we are two decades later, and we're the largest fitness program for moms nationwide with nearly 2 ,000 locations and hundreds of franchisees. And it's been quite a journey.

3:01John Lee Dumas:I love that story. And as you mentioned pre-interview, the last time we chatted, we were still in San Diego. So, I mean, that's how long ago it's been because we've been in Puerto Rico now for nine years. So it's been quite the transition and quite the fun times for both of us and both of our businesses. And it's been a fun time getting rocking and rolling and just, you know, wherever you want to be an entrepreneur in this day and age, you can be an entrepreneur, which I love. And like your franchises, like you said, they're nationwide, baby. I mean, people are having success and doing great things where they are.

3:33John Lee Dumas:And I will say my wife, Kate, will definitely be listening to this episode because we now have our son, Beau, in the picture. and I would love for some tips for mom entrepreneurs who are balancing that work in motherhood. Because right now I call Kate the nap time queen because she just like sits down during nap time and like does like a day's worth of work in like an hour and 23 minutes. So tell me more. She's a mom on a mission. Let's hear it. Yeah, I mean, it's funny. My franchisees, I am not exaggerating at all, are everything from accountants to attorneys. We've had CSI investigators, rocket scientists, teachers, nurses, you name it.

4:12And I think it's because for so many women, their career no longer matches who they want to be when they become a mom. And I think the best thing to be is an entrepreneur because you get to create whatever you want your life to look like. You get to decide your hours, where you work, when you work. And so for us as a franchisor, creating all those career opportunities for franchisees, that is literally one of the best blessings of this business.

4:40John Lee Dumas:Man, I love that. Now, one thing that you've really been able to do with people that you work with and your franchisees, and it's really talk about leveling up. I mean, how the heck does somebody level up in that manner that's most relevant to you? Yeah, so I have a new book that just came out called Level Up Your Life. And my whole concept is that whether it's as a fitness professional or in business or just life, everybody always wants success to happen in a quantum leap. They want to go from I don't run to that I'm going to run a marathon or I'm going to lose all this weight or I'm going to have a million dollar business.

5:18And it happens from taking small steps one at a time. And so I feel like I took a lot of what I learned as a CEO and entrepreneur and applied it to life. So as you know, because I mean, you literally do this on your website, you've got dashboards and KPIs. And that is how good business people run their business. Well, I apply those things to life. Like you create a dashboard for your life. What are the things that are going to bring you more joy? What are the things that are going to level up? And rather than trying to change all the things at once, because we can't, what are the things that are most important to you to change and create new habits in?

6:00And so I think if you make just a small degree of change every single day, you're going to wind up in a completely different place.

6:07John Lee Dumas:Man, that is powerful. And it's so true. And I love that quote by Peter Drucker of what gets measured gets improved. You have to measure these things if you want to improve upon them. Now, let's kind of circle back a little bit, because I think there's some mom and some dad entrepreneurs out there who are just kind of going crazy right now, balancing work and parenthood and all these different things. Give us some more tips that we can maybe implement into our daily lives to really kind of help smooth out this process. Well, it's funny because I, like your wife is experiencing, I think that most mom entrepreneurs find that they don't have the same amount of time that maybe a typical entrepreneur or worker has.

6:44So if you have less time, then you have to be absolutely a master of time. And so our average franchisee, you're going to die when I tell you this, John, our average franchisee works 11 to 15 hours a week. What? Like, that's nuts, right? So if you only have 11 to 15 hours a week to work, you have to be so incredibly good at time blocking, at time batching, at making sure that you're really focused on doing the most important things. you know, I really love that concept of that, you know, 20%, 80 % of your results comes from 20 % of your work. So the idea is let's just focus on that 20%. That's all we're going to work on.

7:27John Lee Dumas:Man, I love that. And so this is one thing that I really focus on now too, is like, what is really bringing in the revenue? What is really making the impact? What are things that are really powerful that I enjoy doing that I feel alive when I'm doing? And then what are the other things I could just kind of let drop off my plate because you don't need to do everything just because it's working on some level. Like you really need to be doing the things that are moving the lever the most for what your actual KPIs, those key performance indicators are for your business. And we have a lot more to talk about around this topic when we get back from thinking our sponsors.

8:03John Lee Dumas:Fire Nation, if you are building a real business, you need real infrastructure. That is why High Level is Entrepreneur on Fire's featured partner. High Level gives you a website builder and hosting, funnels and landing pages, email marketing, appointment scheduling, payment processing, course and membership hosting, and so much more. If you're done letting weeks just drift on by, visit eofire.com slash YouTube. that's eofire.com slash YouTube and press play on day one. 50 days will pass in the blink of an eye. The only question is whether you'll still be thinking or finally building something special. Lisa, we're back and I want to talk about how are you personally implementing business strategies when it comes to personal development. Expound upon that. To me, there's no difference. I apply everything. So, you know, I love doing those activities that I don't get any credit for, like Zig Ziglar, I think, created the original wheel of life and lots of entrepreneurs have created their own version.

10:10So I love to take an assessment of all the different areas of my life and then decide from there what are the different areas that I want to level up. And so when I set goals every quarter for the business, I also set those goals for my life and for those things that are most important. I know that I can't try to make change in all the things. So I always choose three MITs, three most important things that I'm going to work on and really hone in on those and have to be OK with it. Some of the things are not going to get my attention. So for me, personal development and business development, it's all the same because it's all my life.

10:46John Lee Dumas:Now, I want to talk about cultivating a positive mindset because, you know, we all face real challenges and it's just going to happen. And some people, they let those challenges take them down and they have a negative mindset about that and they have, you know, a scarcity mindset. How do we cultivate a positive mindset when we're working day to day? These challenges are coming up. These obstacles are happening. And what do we do? I love that. I saw a great quote the other day that it said, it's not about the glass being half full or half empty. It's reminding yourself that the glass is refillable.

11:22We think 60 ,000 thoughts a day, 98 % of those thoughts are the same thoughts you thought yesterday. And the challenge is human beings as most of those thoughts are negative. And so you have the same cycles over and over and over. So my background is actually psychology. And so I get to apply this both to business and in life and to really realize that we need to train our brain in the same way we train a muscle. And so you need to do do over thoughts. So when you have a thought that's not serving you, which is on the regular, have a thought that's not serving you. First, be aware of it. You can't just leave it from there.

12:01You then need to do a do over thought. We need to start reprogramming your brain. And the more you do it, the more you are going to start focusing more on the good. I also love thinking about those optical illusions. Pick any optical illusion that you can think of, maybe like the vase and the face. They're both there, but you just need to switch your perspective to see the other. And so I really do a lot of focus when I'm in that dark, mucky spot that we all get in to say, how is this happening for me and not to me? How is this a gift? Because we all know that all of those hardest times, those biggest challenge times actually help us grow and often create something so much better.

12:46You know, in order to have a breakthrough, you need a break.

12:49John Lee Dumas:In order to have a breakthrough, you need to have a break. And I just want to say that other quote one more time because, man, I really like that. It's not about the glass being half full or half empty. It's about it being refillable. I mean, I thought you were going to say it's about the fact that there's just water in the glass, which is an okay end to that quote, but you're ending, hey, it's refillable. I mean, again, it's that mindset of abundance, not scarcity, not saying that like, hey, if somebody's taking a piece of the pie, that leaves less for me. It's like, no, there's abundance of pieces of pies in the world.

13:20John Lee Dumas:Like it's all refillable, it's remakable. There's just endless amounts of amazingness and abundance and generosity out there in the world. Now, I'm gonna ask you what one of your favorite chapters is in your book, Level Up Your Life? Because for me, I look back at my book and I say, man, chapter eight was like such a beast. Like that chapter could be a book in and of itself. It's about systems and processes within your team. And it's by far the longest chapter. And it took me by far the longest to write because it was so intensive. What would you say is your favorite chapter in your book? The one that bubbles up for me right away is the one that's on community and our village.

14:03and you know I started Fit for Mom 24 years ago and obviously I was looking for community but I think it is more important than ever I mean I know we're still talking about this pandemic five years later but people are lonely and we are more isolated now than we ever have been even though in so many ways it feels like we're so connected and we have so many friends online, people are really, really lonely. And know what's interesting is that loneliness is one of the highest predictors of premature death. It is actually higher than smoking or obesity. And so while I'm in the fitness industry and I'm trying to get people to exercise and eat well, I think actually creating that community might be the most important thing that we're doing it for mom.

14:53And so you don't have to be a mom to realize that like, we need real friends. You don't need a lot, but you need truly to have people that you can depend on and to be real with. If you watch any of those shows on the blue zones and where there's the most centenarians, all of those people have community. So that chapter is really important to me because I feel like it's more needed now than ever.

15:19John Lee Dumas:Lisa, I love that. And listen, we talked about a lot of cool stuff today. What would you want the one key takeaway? And maybe let's skip over community because you made such a great point there. So what's maybe another of really a key point that you would want us to take away from our conversation today? I mean, we're speaking to entrepreneurs. I think no matter what it is to design a life you love to live. You were the architect of this and stop following other people's rules. Stop doing what the trends are. Truly, truly do what's in your unique ability, what's in your passion. You and I are both doing this so many years later because we're still so fired up on it.

16:03Like your fire has not dissipated at all. My fire has not dissipated at all. And it's because we're so passionate about what we do. And so I would say if you've not found what's going to light that spark for you, keep on looking because it's out there.

16:18John Lee Dumas:It's out there. So Lisa, if Fire Nation wanted to maybe find out more about you, check out your book, Level Up Your Life, give us a rundown. Like where do we do that? What is the call to action for our listeners today? Yeah. I mean, if you want to follow anything about me, it's lisadrexman.com. But certainly if you have, if you're a mom, if you know a mom, um, and they're looking for community, please do go to fit for mom.com and it's fit with the number four mom.com because we have not only the opportunity for classes, but we have the opportunity for the franchise. And apparently I need to get a Puerto Rico one out there for you and your wife.

16:56John Lee Dumas:Absolutely. And my whole community in general down here in Palmas Del Mar, we've got a lot of moms. In fact, Kate's mom group of 2023 23 babies is 14 mothers strong. So a lot of cool stuff going on down here. And I just want to say, Fire Nation, you're the average of the five people you spend the most time with. And you've been hanging out with LD and JLD today. So keep up that heat. And for links to everything we talked about, visit eofire.com. Type Lisa in the search bar. The show notes page will pop right up.
