19Say hello to our featured partner, High Level, and visit highlevelfire.com to start your free trial today. Nathan, say what's up to Fire Nation and share something that you believe about becoming successful that most people disagree with. Well, thanks again for having me. I appreciate that. And in reference to what most people disagree with, that's a pretty hard one because I don't know what most people disagree with, but I do know that something people have a hard time with. and including myself at times. And that's actually seeing the truth, right? So as it relates to people's lives and the decisions that they have to make, seeing that truth is not the easiest thing in the world to do.
16A lot of times we have a tendency to deflect, deny, maybe get lost in excitement, the next trip, the next drink, the next cigarette, the next puff of whatever you want to smoke in the magic pipe. And we have a tendency to really deflect from the truth. It's the hardest thing in the world to see, but once we see it, it just has a, it has a feel to it. It has a ring to it. And from there, I think that's where the real work begins. And Fire Nation, speaking of real work, we're talking about lighting your soul on fire. And Nathan, sometimes in life, it just feels like the odds are against us. So let's talk about what it takes to make it in life, even when it feels that way.
08That's the truth, right? So, you know, life is not fair. And a lot of times we'll hear people walk around and say, oh gosh, life isn't fair. This situation's not fair. So-and-so got an opportunity that I didn't get. It's really not fair. And there's truth in that. It's not fair. And we try to do all that we can to equal the playing field. But all things being equal, things are not equal. Some people are born with a different hand right off the rip. Some people have privileges. Others don't. Some people look better than others. Some people are more talented than others. Some people are smarter than others, et cetera.
46The list goes on. to somebody always out there that's smarter, wealthier, stronger, or handsome, prettier, whatever the case may be. But nonetheless, whatever they may have in that one specific area, you may have that they don't have. And I think a lot of times people like to try to keep score relative to what other people have. They like to tabulate the results to measure their own worth. And again, I think that's just another deflection when you begin to think, oh, well, look what Johnny has and what I don't have, or that old saying of keeping up with the Joneses. There's no such thing. It's not possible.
25We really can't keep up because we are our own unique person. And as we begin to carve out the uniqueness within us, how do we think even for one second that everyone's going to be able to fill the same crevices, cracks, increases? And And the answer is it's not possible. So we have to live within our own identity. Now, Nathan, I'm a big believer in both discipline and true self-mastery. So in your own words, how can we develop these traits? In some of my writings you'll find in the books, if you read any of the other books, I call it the naked test. And it's where you, hopefully behind closed doors, stand in front of a mirror naked and look at yourself and ask yourself, what is it that I'm having a really hard time with?
18And why are you then having a hard time with it? Is it because maybe you don't fit in? Is it that you feel rejected by someone? Is it maybe there's someone that you see that you wish you could aspire to be? And whatever your heart's desire, again, taking a look at that and recognizing, you know, well, why is it that this is so important to me? And I think that's the ultimate question. Why are these things important to me? And then dig in deep on not just settling with the answer you give yourself, but I would then ask you to go one step further and say, why do you think it's important to you? And keep then digging in there and try to really figure out why these things are so important.
04Because you'll find out many times it has to do with outside influences that are really catapulting you forward. Now let's talk about our physical habits. You know, things that we eat, how we move on a day-to-day basis. Can they actually transform our mind and our soul? In my opinion, what we consume through any of our five senses, whether it's touch, right? Taste, sound, sight. And, you know, we have to really think about ultimately what we're consuming. So if we're consuming things that are not feeding into our self-worth, that will enhance our self-respect, we're taking away. So my advice to people is making that disciplined effort with what you're thinking about.
06Your thoughts are so important. The food you eat, what you drink, every ounce of everything that you take in will yield a result. And if you're not where you want to be, you're not accomplishing what you want to accomplish. then you haven't put in the work. Because a big piece of it really does come down to consumption. Out of curiosity, what do you consume on a daily basis when it comes to food? And how do you move on a daily basis when it comes to movement and exercise? I work out physically for sure five days a week. A lot of times six, maybe seven, depending, but for sure five. a combination of yoga, weightlifting, some cardio, a lot of calisthenics.
59And consumption, I eat food either cooked by water or by fire. I don't eat fried food. I don't, in fact, a lot of my friends will tease me about my diet because I eat very plain food. I believe, me personally, I think when you're eating a whole food, a quality food, why do we need spices? Spices, to me, came about before refrigeration. So as the meat began to taste rotten, people would add spices to it to camouflage the rotten taste of the meat. If you're a meat eater, which I happen to like meat, when you eat fresh meat, the freshness of the food is really the ultimate taste. So when we begin to add different elements to the foods, it's not necessary.
49You know, when you start to add butter sauces and greases and oils and cheeses and all these different things to enhance the flavor. Are you eating for joy or are you eating for survival? Me personally, I eat for survival. I don't eat for joy. I find joy in other aspects of my life rather than just through diet. And occasionally I'll have a cheat day where I have a pizza here or maybe a little ice cream or a piece of cake because it's enjoyable to taste these foods. but I don't think to myself, wow, I'm going to have a piece of tiramisu today because I'm going to feel really healthy afterwards and accomplished.
26I do it because I want to indulge in something is the reason why. I like that phrase cooked by fire or water. That's a really cool way of looking at it. And Fire Nation, we have a lot more to talk about with Nathan when we get back from thanking our sponsors. Okay. Nathan, you believe that real world street smart education is more valuable than a traditional classroom degree. Tell us more. So I'm a little biased on that front because that's the path that I walked, the path that I traveled.
34I don't know though that I would discount the traditional academic structure that a lot of other folks travel on. I think the biggest piece is, whether it's through academia or the street or any format, I think the real big piece is, bringing right back to where we started our conversation, it's seeing that truth. Why do you want to become what you want to become? Why do you want to do what you do? Why do you want to become that professional? Why do you want to make the money? Why do you want to look healthy? Why do you want to feel this way? Why is it that you actually want to do it? And a lot of times we do it because we're feeding our insecurities.
19So the biggest thing I would say is if you're doing what you're doing because it feeds your insecurities, then I would suggest that you really take a stronger look at what it is you're doing and why you're doing it. Because in the end, when the time goes by, you're making the investment in yourself, the time and other people in two, three, four, five, 10, 20 years, however many years go by, you'll look back and say, why did I do this? Why did I live this life for these other people when I should have been doing what I wanted to do the whole way through? And I was so worried about offending someone or not fitting in or, and that's a big one, not fitting in, right?
01We've all have had struggles with wanting to fit into that box that other people have put out there for us to jump into because it doesn't feel good to feel rejected. So when we don't want to feel rejected, we'll do what we can to feel accepted, even if it means selling ourselves short. So Nathan, a lot of people earn money, but what's the smartest way from going to just earning money to actually building lasting wealth? It's a balance between what you earn and what you spend. And what you spend, how much of that is an investment? What are you investing in? Are you investing in yourself? Are you investing in education?
45Are you investing in a portfolio? What's your investment? There's a difference between removing cash out of the bank account, it can go in two different places. It can go in as an expense or it can go in as an investment. And I would say, take as much cash out of the bank and put it into an investment. Now, what's an investment? Anything that's going to have a greater value, whether it's emotionally or educational or monetary in the future more than the present value of today. What would you say are some of your favorite ways to approach which investments make sense for you? And then what investments make sense for individuals who are on that entrepreneurial journey that are businessmen, businesswomen?
40I would call it a reverse engineered goal. So decide what you want in 10 years from now. Decide what you want in five years from now. Look at where you are today and begin to build that bridge. It's going to gap that space and time between today and that block of time five or 10 years from today. And ask yourself relative to the amount of days that are available to me, what is it that I need to do? What value do I need to bring to my industry? What value do I need to bring to my company? What value do I need to bring to the people that I'm connected with? What value do I need to bring to my investment account?
15And more importantly, what skill set do I need to learn that I don't yet know today to create the value in the marketplace that's needed for me to obtain the level of financial wealth I'm looking for? Nathan, I end every episode of Entrepreneurs on Fire with a Jim Rohn quote, which is you're the average of the five people you spend the most time with. So how can we really choose those people wisely? Like, can you speak to how the people who are closest to us shape who we actually become and how we choose them wisely? We are what we eat, they say, right? So I think Jim Rohn is basically saying we are what we consume.
54Yeah. Back to these ideas of anything that we bring in through our five senses, we become what we hang out with, the environment we're in, et cetera. So I don't know that I would hang. I don't know that I would put a prejudice on the five people. Look, you might have some feelings for these five people. It might be tough to cut them loose just because they don't necessarily line up with what you're trying to accomplish. So I think that could actually hinder you, because if you find yourself, OK, well, here's this person I'm hanging out with. I really enjoy my time with them. But nonetheless, they're really not that ambitious and they're really not going to feed into what I want to do in the long term.
32But nonetheless, it didn't do anything wrong to me. That can create a burden, an emotional burden, because you're ending something or you're reducing your contact with that person that becomes an emotional distraction and a draw that can work against you. So I'd be very cautious on that exact quote personally. What I would look at more importantly is what is it that I want to accomplish and how can I achieve that with the amount of time that's been given to me? And how committed are you to actually achieving this? Is it just something, boy, I really wish it just was there already? Or are you willing to go for it no matter what it takes?
14And that's a decision. And I think anything in between is a failure. So if you're going to decide on something, you better go all in and you better give it every single thing you've got. It needs to be the closest thing to oxygen as possible in order for this to actually come to life. Nathan, you dropped a lot of value bombs here today. If Fire Nation was to step back and just have one takeaway from our conversation, what would you want that one takeaway to be? Be true to you. It's a life mission of being true to you because as you become more truthful with yourself, you will find that there's so much more to be true to.
50And it really is, it's a never ending cycle because it's just layer upon layer upon layer of insulation that prohibits us from truly exploring who we truly are. It's the hardest thing in the world to find. It's the old saying of know thyself. I mean, that quote was written hundreds of years ago, thousand years ago. I couldn't tell you exactly how long, But I know it's for sure hundreds of years ago that that philosophy, know thyself, is truly the most valuable quote, I believe, ever written. So Nathan, if Fire Nation has been loving this interview and they're truly ready to light their soul on fire, what is your call to action for our listeners today?
34How can we connect with you? Connecting with me would be through NathanLencreate.com if you wanted to connect with me directly. If you want to connect with the message, I would tell you to concentrate on the one thing that creates the most anxiety, your greatest fear. The most anxiety, your greatest fear. That's where your greatest treasure is. That's where your greatest truth is. That's where you find that true moment. It's behind the anxiety and it's behind the fear. Fire Nation, you're the average of the five people you spend the most time with. You've been hanging out with NL and JL. D today.
