20Say hello to our featured partner, High Level, and visit highlevelfire.com to start your free trial today. Joanna, say what's up to Fire Nation and share something that you believe about becoming successful that most people disagree with. What's up, everybody? What most people disagree with. I think one of the things that I believe in is that you have to be true to yourself. There's so many people who want to do things to please the others or the customer or society, so to speak. and then forget themselves and forget that that was what started their whole entrepreneurial venture is those feelings and those deep down naivete, so to speak.

27Fire Nation, let's be real. What the world wants, what the world needs is not some watered down version of you copying somebody else. It's your real, true, authentic voice where the passion lies. And we're going to talk about the velvet voice. We're going to talk about the bold vision. And we're going to talk about the origin story of Joanna. So Joanna, take us to your early experiences that shaped the woman that you've become today. This is a big one. My mother was very was old older for uh having a child so she was 40 she was uh rosie the riveter back in world war ii nice and so um i grew up with this woman who she actually bought a harley davidson back with her first paycheck and she drove that motorcycle until she crashed and then she gave it up and got an MGM midget.

28And real quick, just to clarify, do you mean that she was actually the woman depicted as Rosie the Riveter? Like she was that person in the flesh? That she was not the actual person. But she just played that role. Right. She played, got it, got it. Because I wouldn't be surprised. I mean, listen, someone has to be Rosie the Riveter. Right. Exactly. But yeah, keep going. And my father was born in Mexico and he was orphaned at nine. and so he wandered the desert of Sonora picking up odd jobs here and there trying to eat and made his way across to Baja and became a fisherman and he was kind of his own business he would ask tourists if they want to go fishing and he would take them out on his rowboat wow so these two people were survivors i'll say yeah and yeah i grew up with those stories yeah i mean to me that is such a shaping of early life when you hear what people went through it's like perspective i mean it's like hey my dad did x y and z when he was nine years old 11 years old 14 years old and here i am like complaining about somebody that made fun of me in junior high school Like, let's put things in perspective here.

45Like, this is real. Which kind of leads me to the next point I want to talk about, which is women in entrepreneurship. Because you've walked the path as a woman entrepreneur. So let's talk about what that journey has actually looked like. The challenges, the breakthroughs, and of course, the moments that defined your grit. Entrepreneurship is something that I didn't even know what it meant. way back when I had decided that these things are things I'm going to do with my life. And so, and I'm pretty new to it. I basically lived my life in the public sphere. So I was in the military. I was, ran for office.

33So these things were all an outward kind of thing. That doesn't necessarily mean entrepreneurship is inward. But it was something that I had to figure out. So the challenges of just trying to peel the onion and looking into how things are done and also becoming bold enough to say, this is what I'm going to do. and that is really, it can be a real challenge. But, you know, breaking through, my husband always says, you're the person that throws the hat over the fence. And it's, you threw the hat over the fence, now how are you going to get it? And so that has always been a part of my life, is I put out a goal and I don't know how to do it, but I'll figure it out.

33I mean, especially in this world that we live in today, when we can have conversations with a 170 IQ individual, and by individual, I mean AI at any point in the day. I mean, the conversations that I've been having over the past few months has just been so cool because it's not like, you know, I'm necessarily asking for direct answers. I'm just looking to bounce ideas and get feedback and thoughts. And, you know, there's a lot of people who have their prejudices and they kind of lean towards one area or another area of expertise. But in today's world, you can just throw out this huge goal like Joanna's just talking about and then have conversations with really smart people or with really smart AI and kind of just start to take steps toward that goal.

14You don't have to accomplish it overnight. I mean, the Martin Luther King quote that I love is, you don't have to see the whole staircase to take the first step. I mean, Joanna, when you set these big goals, you couldn't see the whole staircase there. You didn't know what that looked like. But you could sit down, talk to somebody or do something to figure out what the next step was. And that next step is just one step in that process. So I want to talk about you choosing the Navy because as an army guy, I was an officer for eight years, did 13 months in Iraq. Like I'm an army guy through and through.

44I'd love to know how you came to the decision to join the Navy and your experience serving in that environment and maybe even more importantly in that culture. I had gotten married the first time when I was 18 and I was very young. I had a very Pollyanna idea of what marriage was and not realizing that I had so much more to grow before I could do this very challenging thing. and I you know the idea of a stay-at-home wife and mother and to put that together and I realized wait a second this isn't really what I signed up for and then there was an instance a couple of instances, I should say, where my ex got a little angry and pushed me around a little bit.

49And so I knew at that moment that I needed to figure this out because abusive relationships only escalate. And so I thought about it and he had always wanted to be in the military. And so I figured out that, put the little bug in and develop, and over several months, we looked into enlisting in the Navy. And it was something that gave me skills, independence, gave me a job that I really needed, and stability. And so that's where we were. and after about two minutes, I figured out this is the job for me. Oh, nice. Just like it probably took you two minutes to realize that maybe marriage wasn't for you at that time.

47It took you two minutes to realize the Navy was for you at that time. Yes. Well, and then it was having a view of a big picture and figuring out that, you know what? I am valuable. I can bring really great things to my surroundings to people around me I'm a good person and so I didn't deserve to be diminished and so that was the independence that I got from the Navy and the training that I got um the uh you know boot camp is just extremely extremely hard for you know somebody that's never done it before. Right. And let's be honest, most people have never done bootcamp before. So it's usually a first time for everybody and it's challenging, but you know, in the challenge lies the reward.

42And we have a lot more to talk about around this topic, Fire Nation. When we get back from thanking our sponsors, Fire Nation, is this your year to transform your business? High level. Join the revolution. Joanna, we're back and I want to talk about going from service to the ballot. I mean, you went from a Navy officer to running for office and that's a major, not a minor, that's a major transition. So what inspired that leap first and foremost, like tell us that story and then what prepared you for it?

37When I was in the Navy, I applied to become an officer. And I had one of my chain of command write down on my chit that I was not officer material. I got that chit back and saw that and I was devastated. I was like, wow, what a roadblock. And I could have taken that and just, you know, decide, yeah, that's what I am. and I didn't and I fought my way through to get to be an officer and I ended up getting a Navy scholarship. Wow. And I went to school, made it through and got commissioned. Now through that whole thing being commissioned in the United States Navy I was a female five foot two Mexican officer prior enlisted and that was a big load to carry.

48I was not treated very well I was I was part of the second wave of women on aircraft carriers, so the men did not want women there. And so it was very challenging, but I was able to figure out how to get my job done, despite having roadblocks and roadblocks. And so when I retired, I was 43. I had two little boys, five and three and there was a full day kindergarten at their elementary school and I was like wait a second why do other elementary schools have it and we don't and so it took me a couple of years and I became a community activist and I went after the school board and basically said, we need equality for the children here in this elementary school as we did the others.

54But we got it done. And that was my introduction to politics. And that was when I was like, you know what, if you put your head down, and you get a lot of people together, and you talk about the benefits of what this particular measure will do, you can convince people that this is what's needed. You have to have this. And I think that actually leads us perfectly into the next thing I want to talk about, which is people over politics. Because, I mean, there's so much turmoil and division across the country. I mean, more so now than I can remember in my lifetime for sure. So how can leaders truly put people first and restore trust in public service.

41And this is the piece that I think is so important today, is that there is a sense of that we don't have control as a common person, as a worker bee, as a person just in society that we throw our hands up and say, well, you know, X says this and so-and-so says that and the media says this and I have no input. And that is where I believe that we need to change how we see ourselves in a society that really is free to say things that are against everything else. So to be a politician today is to listen to constituents. And right now, it is such a different communication that we have, and it is countrywide.

51You could do it, you know, you could blast the whole country or you can go down to microcosms of cities and be able to convey the message that you believe that person or those people need to hear. Because the technology nowadays is so, so good about that. And that's where I want to go is just getting the word out, educating people about their role in this country, that they are a piece of how we function as a country and our success and our downfall. And we need to let them know that they are important. So Joanna, let's talk about the road ahead. Because as you look towards the future, what's next for you to make that kind of impact that you truly want to make in this world?

49The impact is getting out there and being vocal. I would like to move my company. I'm a voiceover artist. I've been doing audiobooks for 10 years. and I would like to take that voice. I have a son that's a film graduate and I have another son that creates music and I want to become a multimedia organization that will bring politics to every person that we could go into different neighborhoods and different environments and be able to speak to those people directly. And that is through media of every sort, commercials, digital, email, wherever they live is where I want to get message about history and the message about what is actually happening today.

53And be able to say this is what happens when you vote. This is what happens if you don't vote. and we are really, I think our society right now has been stunned that there is consequences whether you vote or not and who you vote for. And so that is where I want to go. I want to be a messenger, a storyteller like I always have. Joanna, for anybody that's listening right now, let's share a closing value bond. if they're thinking about stepping up, serving, or leading in their own community, much like you have, what's the one piece of advice you would share with them? The one piece of advice is that every one, basically, and I'm going to stray into the political realm, every one of the people that have been elected into office ran for a reason.

56they had you know it was like for me it was schools um it could be um that lgbtq it could be um you have a disabled child uh it could be social security the many many things that we have as a society and you find that niche and you go and bring yourself to that whatever it is a law a movement but it has to be sincere you have to really dig and bring all of those tools that you have as an individual to bear. Joanna, Fire Nation is listening right now and they want to learn more about you, maybe connect with you. What is your call to action for our listeners today? My call to action is to get out there, look and see what's out there for you.

03And there are so many things that you think about every day and you wish you had this or you wish this was a certain way. now's the time to look and see where and how can I change that, improve it, or make people aware of it.
