Episode Title
Lesson: Are You Firing on All 16 Cylinders?
Episode Description In this episode, host Bill Gilliland shares insights on how to maximize team engagement and performance by comparing individuals to a high-performance engine. He discusses the importance of involving not just the mind and body of team members but also their heart and spirit for optimal business success.
---
Key Concepts
The Engine Analogy
- High-Performance Engine: Just as a sports car with 16 cylinders performs better than a standard vehicle, a team performs better when all aspects of its members are engaged.
- Cylinders Analogy:
- Mind: Represents cognitive engagement (3 cylinders).
- Body: Represents physical presence (3 cylinders).
- Heart: Represents emotional engagement (5 cylinders).
- Spirit: Represents personal motivation and alignment with goals (5 cylinders).
Current Engagement Statistics
- Only about 30% of employees are fully engaged.
- Approximately 20% are actively disengaged.
Team Dynamics
- Imagine a canoe with ten people:
- 3 are rowing in the right direction (fully engaged).
- 5 are somewhat participating (not fully engaged).
- 2 are rowing in the wrong direction (actively disengaged).
Importance of Engagement
- Engaged employees contribute to the success of the organization, while disengaged or actively disengaged individuals can hinder progress.

Strategies for Improvement
Enhancing Engagement
- Vision and Culture: Provide a clear vision to inspire employees and make them feel part of something bigger.
- Leadership vs. Management:
- Management: Focuses on competence (mind and body).
- Leadership: Cultivates passion (heart and spirit).
Action Steps
- Evaluate Your Team: Rate each employee on the four cylinders (mind, body, heart, spirit) to identify areas for improvement.
- Engagement Programs: Implement structured programs aimed at improving engagement over time (e.g., 12-week employee engagement program).
- Clear Goals: Establish crystal-clear goals and a positive culture to encourage team alignment and motivation.
---
Conclusion
- Emphasizing both management and leadership is crucial for building a successful team.

So we don't do fancy smancy. We don't do flashing lights. We don't do a lot of things that a lot of podcasts will do. These are just real stories about real people and their entrepreneurial and business experiences. We go into their wins, their challenges, and their learnings. So we hope you enjoy it.
0:37Welcome to this week's episode of Epic Entrepreneurs powered by Action Coach Growth Partners, where we teach you how to make more money, build better teams, and find the time to do the things you went into business for in the first place. Before we get started, I'd like to talk to you today about community. Everyone wants to be part of something. And when I first went into business, I found out it was lonely at the top. I was young. I didn't really have any friends doing what I was doing. There was no one out there building businesses. It would have been nice to have had a community of like-minded business owners to work with.
1:14It's still lonely at the top, but it doesn't have to be. You see, you can join with us. You can join our Action Coach community. We meet every month in person for education, for planning, to find inspiration, for peer-to-peer coaching, to make a commitment, to get results. If that sounds interesting to you or to find out more, just reach out directly to me, Bill Gilliland. I contact him, folks, in the notes. Or you can go to BillGilliland.actioncoach.com and book a strategy session with me and now on to the show hey there i hope you're having a fantastic start to your spring and today i want to talk about people i want to talk about something near and dear i want to and i want to compare it compare people to a to a high performance engine so i want you to imagine that people are like a high-performance engine.
2:17Now, a high-performance engine, your car probably has four cylinders, six cylinders, maybe eight cylinders. Well, a high-performance engine likely has more cylinders, has 16 cylinders. So imagine a Ferrari or a high-performance sports car, something that's really designed to perform at a high level. Well, people are a bit like that. If we're going to perform at a high level, we need to be hitting on all 16 cylinders. So let's look at these cylinders and talk about how they might match up or how they might fit or how we might use the metaphor to work out how to work better with people or how to get more out of our team or how to do more with our clients.
3:11So the first area that I want to talk about is mind. Like if you look at a person, you know, when they come to work, you get their mind. You also get their body. So we've got mind and body. So, and what we're after there is basically competence. if and and you get their mind and body but you don't get all of them and the way i would assign those cylinders is i would say you get about three cylinders for the mind and about three for the body so if if all you get as an employee or as a team member or even as a client if all you're getting is their mind and body you don't have much you only have three eights you only have six out of 16 cylinders that are working in your behavior.
4:05So what are they doing with the other 10 cylinders? What is going on in their day-to-day? Basically, you have an employee or a team member who is not engaged. If all you got is their mind and body, they show up, they do their job, they go home, but they don't do it with enthusiasm and they're not engaged, then you don't even have really half of an employee. So the statistics are pretty shocking on that in that about a little over 30 % of employees are actually fully engaged, which basically means that, and the other way is that there's about 20-something percent, about 2 in 10 are actively disengaged.
4:53So if you can imagine a canoe with 10 people rowing, what that means is that you've got three people that are rowing in the right direction. You've got another five people that are looking around at the birds or not really pulling their weight. Maybe they've got an oar in the water, but it's not really, maybe they paddle every once in a while, but they're not really helping the full cause. and then you've got two that are actually paddling in the wrong direction or drilling holes in the bottom of your boat. So if you're the average team, according to surveys, I think it's Gallup that did the surveys, says that that's what's going on in your organization.
5:38And here's how you deal with it. If you've only got six cylinders of the mind and body, that's what you've got going on with those middle people and potentially with the other people. So you've got about seven out of ten. That's about right. So there's ten other cylinders. Now what are the other two areas? The other two are heart and spirit. If you can get the heart and spirit, that's where you get engagement. That's where you get the magic. So what I'd like for you to think about is if you pay somebody, they're a good employee they just show up all you're getting is their mind and body how do you get their heart and spirit well that's through various methods of employee engagement that's about giving them a vision so that they can get motivated by they that a vision will help enroll and inspire them they want to be part of look people today want to be part of something bigger So if you're giving them something bigger and better and part of something that they can buy into, then they're going to naturally be more engaged.
6:49If you're clear on your vision, if you're clear on your goals, if you're crystal clear on your culture. So that's where I would start. We've talked about this on the show before. Get your vision, your mission, and your culture worked out. There's a lot more things that you need to get worked out. But you get those worked out, then you have a good shot at getting their heart and their spirit and getting them engaged and moving more than three of those people paddling the boat in the right direction, getting six, eight, ten, getting all of them paddling in the right direction. So I want you to think about it.
7:28Like what you can do, I'd love for you to take this model. Just write down mind and three and body and three. That's the percentage, three out of 16. Heart, five. Spirit, five. And just rate your people. How many out of three do you have? If you have a great employee, then they might rate their mind is here. They're working. Their body is here. They show up. They do what they're supposed to do. Their heart is in it. Maybe they're a three or four out of five. and their spirit they have good spirit maybe they're a three or four out of five now then the question would be how do you get them firing on all 16 cylinders what are some things you can do and there you know we have an employee engagement program that we it's a 12-week program where we can take a team through and and the studies have shown over and over again it was actually based on athletic teams how to why some why do some athletic teams with talent do better than others is because the team is engaged.
8:31They're working together. They know each other. They care about each other and they're moving forward. So what I'd love for you to do is write this down and take and rate every single one of your employees and where they are and then begin to work on how you can improve them, how you can, maybe you don't have all their mind and body. Maybe they're not even there all the time. Well, that's a different problem. and and and by the way that's a the mind and body are management when you're trying to create competency that's about management and that's about having a management system when you start talking about heart and spirit then you get into leadership that's where you that that's that's where the difference is so the truth is you can't really have leadership without having management You need both.
9:22You've got to be a good manager, have creating competence. You've got to be a good leader. Leadership creates passion. So you've got to have competence and passion if you want to build a great team. So that's my rant for today.
