10And now, enjoy the show. Good afternoon. Hope you're having a fantastic spring. Today, as we're recording this, it is beautiful. It is amazing outside and I hope you're getting outside and enjoying whatever it is you do outside in this beautiful time of the year. Today, I want to talk to you a little bit about training, and specifically training versus education versus coaching, when what is appropriate, how they all work together, just the basic overall thing. One of the E and EPIC stands for education, and I think education does encompass training, education, and coaching. So let me give you my take on training.
09So training to me is about creating competency. It is about creating basic level skills or sometimes high level skills. It is about a skills transfer. In other words, someone likely already knows how to do this thing that we're attempting to learn. So let's just take sales, for example. To do sales training, there would be certain skills, maybe record keeping, maybe some techniques that would be useful for anybody to learn and then, of course, make their own in training. So to me, training is about a skills transfer. Training is about a competency. Training is about basics. Training is about education.
00It is a transfer of knowledge to the person being trained. and whether you're I mean the cool thing about training these days is we can get it online we can get it in books we can get it in audio books we there there you can do it in person there is a lot a lot a lot of training out there so in a lot of ways training is a is a download of something that's already been learned and then that transfer of knowledge to whoever's doing the So when you take a training, you are learning skills, learning things to do. Training is also direct. There's a saying in the military, do it right in drill, do it right in, likely, battle.
50But do it right in drill, I would say do it right in real life. So there is a repetitive nature to it. there is a learning there there is something to to learning by rote on it is so and i do think that a lot of times there has to be training before there can be coaching there some i'm sure that sometimes you know most training would be done outside of coaching coaching would be taking someone who had some knowledge had some training and then upgrading not only their knowledge but their application of the knowledge so um you know training tends to come from you know with an outside source i think education could be from an outside source or it could be self-education so i do i do think those two things work together now coaching to me is taking something that you've already learned and applying it maybe differently maybe in a different way no and you know coach all of these things overlap coaching training education i think they i think they all overlap you know coaching involves education it involves planning it involves inspiration it involves application it involves commitment there's there's a lot of things that come together to make coaching a successful thing.
21But you've got to do the basics first. I remember a story from that a trainer was talking, an NBA trainer was talking about a session he did with Kobe Bryant. He was involved in some of the all-star training and he met him and he said, he just asked him, hey, he said, hey, could I come and work out with you or see how you work out and see what I can learn. And he said, sure, be at the gym at 4 a.m. in the morning and we'll work out. And so he showed up at 4 and Kobe had already been there for 20 minutes working out. He got there at 340 and was already working out for a while. And even though he told him to be there at 4, that's just the way that Kobe rolled.
09But what he noticed was that what Kobe was doing when he showed up was basic footwork drills that could be done and likely would be done by any eighth grade middle school basketball team or basketball coach and so Kobe got done with his foot drills and this trainer asked him he said he said Kobe can I ask you why are you doing drills that are simple that any eighth grade team would likely do and and his answer was was was simple He says, you have to continue to pay attention to the basics if you're going to build on it. If you're going to be excellent, you have to pay attention to the basics. So you have to continue your training.
55It's no good just to go to training, learn something, and then not apply it, not use it, and not get good at it, not get the best you can be. So the same basic drills that worked in eighth grade also worked for NBA stars, and it's the same in business. the same basics that you learn in any kind of training, you can continue to apply as you build your business. So my question to you is, is what kind of training do you need? What kind of training do your people need? And what kind of training are you planning on implementing in the next 12 months? Now, we've got a couple of really cool training that we just added.
37They're 12-week trainings. so it's essentially a 30-minute video and then an hour debrief every single week in a group setting for both sales so we have sales training with 12 week sales training course and we have a 12-week management training course as always if you're interested in learning more or interested in checking it out then just go to my website it's philgilleland.actioncoach.com book in a quick call with me or one of my team and we will have a discussion with you if you'd like to talk about training that's great if you'd like to talk about basic education we got a whole lot of resources out there including my book that you can get for free and then we can also talk about coaching if you're interested in that but what i would like you to do now your home fund is to take and figure out your training plan for the next year.
