In short
ESPN FC Christmas Spectacular “2025 in Review” recap of major football storylines, especially Liverpool’s rollercoaster year, the FIFA Club World Cup debate, El Clásico drama, and panel awards (best XI and player of the year).
Guests (panelists)
Alexis Yunus (host). Stevie Nichol (former Liverpool defender; festive banter). Jules Laurenz (journalist/pundit). Jan Agafjortov (journalist/pundit). Shaka (panelist; also called “Xhaka” in transcript).
Key claims
- Liverpool: after winning an historic 20th Premier League title under Jürgen Klopp’s footsteps, the year collapsed via poor form (9 losses in 12 from Sep-Nov), squad disruption (Trent Alexander-Arnold to Real Madrid), tragedy (Diogo Jota and brother Andre Silva killed in a car accident), and a Salah “bombshell” interview accusing the club of throwing him under the bus; Salah was dropped and could be Liverpool’s last appearance.
- Signings (Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz, etc.) are argued as “good business” long-term despite short-term adaptation issues.
- FIFA Club World Cup: some praise for global reach and improved logistics; major criticism for player workload and FIFA’s profit motives.
- El Clásico: Real Madrid’s 2-1 win is framed as restoring “bad blood” and rivalry energy.
Notable examples
- Liverpool vs Chelsea corridor anecdote: Van Dijk “nearly in tears” about Jota’s absence.
- Club World Cup: injuries discussed, including Jamal Musiala.
- El Clásico: Mbappé and Jude Bellingham goals; Viní Jr. tunnel scrap; Rudiger bottle; Lamine Yamal pre/post-game tension.
- Best XI/player awards: Dembele player of the year (top 5: Dembele, Mbappé, Haaland, Kane, Rafinha). Best XI debate includes Saliba over Van Dijk; Mbappé left, Dembele central, Lamine Yamal right.

0:32Julien Laurens:Hello, hello everyone. Happy holidays and welcome to our ESPN FC Christmas Spectacular. Look how festive we are. I'm Alexis Yunus and I had to gather the most festive panelists I could. So I had to settle for Stevie Nichol, who's got haggis on his jumper. We had to coax Stevie into his jumper. Also, it's a bit tight for you this year, isn't it, Stevie? Oh, God. Just keep throwing it. And Jackie forgot to charge my Christmas lights are dead, you all. I'm a Christmas light today. You're full of festive spirit, you, isn't it? Festive spirit, only because you were bullying me about my jumper earlier on.
1:17Julien Laurens:Well, for some more festivities, we've got two more festive people. We've got Julian Laurenz, who is joining us with his PSG Santa hat. We love to see it. and our resident Santa Claus, who we thought was in the North Pole, which is basically Norway. But Jan Agafjortov is joining us as well in just a T-shirt, Jan. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. It's not just a T-shirt. Oh, it's a jumper. It's a jumper. Look at all the Christmas. You know, you see Hugh Grant, see Lowe. I mean, I see the guys coming into Christmas. They have a white one on. So, yeah. All right. I mean, they're festive.
1:52Yeah, I'm in England. I'm in Windsor. King Charles is not there. but Camilla is here, so that's okay.
1:58Julien Laurens:You know what, Jan? You are all the royalty we need there in view. If you say so, Jan. If you say so, Jan. If you say so. I think Jan looks very classy. He's like a classy Santa Claus. We love that. Modern-day Santa Claus. I wish you had something nice to say about somebody. All right. Oh, Stevie, don't worry. I'll make it up to you. I'm going to make it up to you so much, Stevie, that the story of the year, we're going to be looking back at all of the biggest football moments of the year, and we are starting with the story of the year, which has been Liverpool's Stevie and Arnazlott following Jürgen Klopp's footsteps by leading the Reds to an historic 20th Premier League title.
2:32Julien Laurens:Back in April, they also extended the contracts of two club legends, Virgil van Dijk and the Egyptian king that is Mohamed Salah. But they also had to say goodbye to one of their own hometown boy, Trent Alexander-Arnold, signed for Real Madrid. And that did not go over well with supporters. Then unimaginable tragedy struck in July as Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva were killed in a car accident while on vacation. Plus, Liverpool were able to splash some cash. Just look at the big name signings that they were able to get, including the saga that was prying Alexander Isak away from Newcastle.
3:11Julien Laurens:And those signings prompted many of us to expect Liverpool to repeat as champions. but they found themselves in a rut from September to November, losing nine out of 12 matches in all competitions. And then Mo Salah, who usually doesn't speak out, gave a bombshell interview accusing the club of throwing him under the bus. Wowzers. He was eventually dropped for a fixture, and we are questioning if it's the last time we've seen Salah in a Liverpool shirt. Then more bad news. Alexander Isak got a broken leg after scoring the winner against Tottenham, and he will now be out for a couple of months. So it's been quite the rollercoaster year for the Reds.
3:51Julien Laurens:So Stevie, you know I am going there. I don't think you expected this type of a rollercoaster. If somebody had said in the off-season that all of those things were going to happen, you would have said they were bonkers. You would have thought somebody was writing a script for an awful movie. I mean, it's just incredible. the things that have gone wrong is just and it's impossible to try and figure out you know you can't you look at the signings for example you can't look at those signings and say what were they thinking about why would you sign that guy I mean you just wouldn't most teams on the planet if they could would have signed the majority of those players there's no question and so the fact that Liverpool almost fell off a cliff but are struggling big time, you couldn't have predicted it.
4:45Nobody could have predicted it. And in fact, most of us were talking about how Liverpool had already won the Premier League before a ball was kicked.
4:53Julien Laurens:We absolutely were saying that looking at all of the signings. I mean, Jan, I think we were definitely saying that when you look at exactly what Hugo Eketike as well as Virts were able to do in the Bundesliga and then you just compare it to, well, I suppose we could take Eketike out of that because he has been scoring a lot. But you look at Virts and how he has just been in the headlines for Liverpool, but just not in the right way. Well, I think that I think you used the right word. It's a roller coaster. We have to not forget that when Liverpool won the Premier League last season, we can all be wise now and say they won it and they were favoured to win this again.
5:29Remember, this slot came there as an inexperienced manager and he still managed to win. I mean, most people had Liverpool in fourth or fifth position in that year. As for the new signings, Akitigen now shows how valuable he is. And it's the paradox, you know, when Isak maybe is out till March when he can play again. I mean, that is unbelievable good business to have two strikers in the same position. As for Florian Wirtz, I'm 100 % convinced that he will turn into one of the best signings. I've said that for many months now. I would still stick to it. I think Florian Wirtz is a brilliant signing.
6:05and yes, I get Stevie's point that it's unbelievable all the players they sign, but I am absolutely sure in the long term that would be very good business for Liverpool Football Club.
6:16Julien Laurens:Jules, as a neutral and a journalist, of course, Liverpool, I'm sure, have kept you busy from winning an historic Premier League title to then the summer of big transfers to then exactly what is going on now. Yeah, incredible 12 months. Really, when you think about it, from January to now, to December, on the field, off the field, all those things that they had to manage, the ones that they could control, like the transfer window, the spending, the ones that obviously they unfortunately could not control, like Diogo Jota, and everything, even some of the little things that they had to go through, the bigger things obviously mattered the most, but everything just had an impact, and sometimes, and we probably won't know exactly how much of an impact Diogo Jota's passing has had, or the Mo Salah outburst had or some of those new signings and the lack of adaptation or not as quick as we thought it could be.
7:10Julien Laurens:All of that, at some point, has just an impact on your form on the pitch, on your form off the pitch as well. And all of that you have to manage. And the big difference for slot, really, from one season to another, is the first season was so perfect almost that there was almost no issue to sort out. Whereas now, he's had so many things that he was dragged into to sort out, to find solutions, to find a way. And that, for him as well, is very different to his first six months at the club, for example. Shaka, how would you sum up Liverpool's year? I'll tell you what, it certainly was incredible. And as much as we've been here and covered all those incidents real time, seeing them laid out in the manner that it did right after the other, it just seemed like so much.
7:56It really did, to Stevie's point, like a really poorly written movie. and so you also what we missed in that rollout is Liverpool's start of the season I think they went what 7-7 without losing or winning 100 % winning all 7 without playing well and the question then was well imagine when Liverpool do start to play well how good this team actually will be but it's turned into anything but and when you see all the incidents some of them of their own making that they've managed others that you just kind of dictate for you almost want to feel sorry for the position that they're in but you're a big football club and kind of getting away from some of the emotion of some of those some of those circumstances they're a big football club who've spent a lot of money and just well as of right now maybe the signing of Virts etc comes good but right now it just isn't working we're talking about the reigning English champions and what four months into the season Hugo Eketike, Samoslai are the only two bright notes in an otherwise incredible dressing room.
9:03That speaks volumes as to how far Liverpool have fallen in a very short space of time. I did, if I may say, Alexis, I did Liverpool at Chelsea. And I think that was the first time I really understood the impact Jota's passing. Jules, we're talking a bit about it. We don't know how much that impact was. I interviewed Virgil van Dijk When you do the interviews at Chelsea, you were very, very close to each other in these small corridors. And he was nearly in tears. And I saw that he had to help back because that impact every day to go in to see that your best friend is not there. I'm not saying every problem at Liverpool has been a consequence of that.
9:44But I think that when we do the story of the 25-26 season, I think that we will see in the future, a lot of people talking about that from the Liverpool camp, that that had a terrible impact of the season. Remember when they won those first games, they were lucky. Remember Bournemouth came back 2-2, they still won the game. But still that kind of postponed any kind of emotions that needed to be done after a very short pre-season. So I think that that should not be underestimated when you see the bit rollercoaster season of Liverpool.
10:18Julien Laurens:Yeah, definitely. that's something that will continue to weigh very heavy on everybody at Liverpool. But Stevie, before we move on, if you were to write to Old Saint Nick for one big wish for Liverpool for the new year, what would be at the top of your list? Man, you think you get relegated? Stop, Stevie. I said for Liverpool. I said for Liverpool. If you don't want the answer, don't ask the question. I said for Liverpool. Oh, beg your pardon. Same answer. So, first of all, my United City are really good. I think that would cheer everybody at Liverpool up, quite frankly. I mean, that really would be a great Christmas present.
10:58I'm sure it would. Just to get the ball rolling.
11:00Julien Laurens:But it doesn't fix things in your dressing room. Do you know, the only thing that I want to see is a Liverpool side playing as a unit and playing good football. And if they do that, then they will eventually start winning things again. because they've got talent. They've got talent everywhere. I mean, as much as we're talking about the back line doing this and making mistakes, they're all talented players. So if they can get the cohesion going, that's the only thing I'm looking for. I'm not being greedy. I'm not looking for four things. Two will do. You know the first one and the second one is just to be able to watch them playing good football.
11:41And after that, fans will accept not winning every game. but when you sit and watch good football and you watch your team playing well then you will take the fact that sometimes it doesn't work out over sitting on the edge of your seat every single time they step on the field and panicking every time the opposition regardless of who it is is anywhere near the box that's all I'm wanting
12:05Julien Laurens:Alright well I hope you at least get one of those two things I actually hope you don't get any of those things to be honest I actually don't want to get any of those Which one? Either's a lose-lose for me. Yeah. I hope you lose both. Anyways, let's move on, shall we? Let's talk about Chelsea because this summer they were crowned world champions because we had another big change to the football calendar. The FIFA Club World Cup was added to what was an already slammed football calendar. It took place all over the USA in the summer, and we saw, look, the good, the bad, and the ugly of it. One good thing was that it brought the game to fans that don't normally get to see this level of star power.
12:45Julien Laurens:and some of the biggest clubs in the world. But then we saw some horrible injuries as well, for example, to Jamal Musiala, that have had such knock-on effects as well. And we are still seeing some injuries, which has become a huge talking point. So I'm going to get the panel's verdict on it. Do you see it being a success, Jules? Let me start with you, or would you just be happier to bin it off? I mean, bin it off, it won't happen anyway. So you know that every four years now, we'll have the club World Cup. So this is clear. So now let's try to make it as good as possible, which, like you said, Alexis, there were some good things in this first one last summer.
13:24Julien Laurens:There were some things that clearly from the ticketing to the times of kickoff, some of the stadiums, if you can try to avoid the extreme heat or the suspension of play because of the weather, then already this is going to be better. So as every first thing, really, you know there's a lot of room for improvement. And I just hope that FIFA, who now have three and a half years, to get it better for the next edition, wherever that will be, whether it be again in the US or somewhere else, it doesn't matter so much. But you would hope that they would learn the lessons from what didn't go that well last summer to make it a better competition.
14:04Julien Laurens:Because I think it could be good. It could be good. But again, there's room for improvement. Room for improvement and it could be good. Jules, a bit hopeful there for that one. Jan, where do you start in this debate? Well, first of all, I feel sorry for PSG because they won only the Champions League and Chelsea being their club World Cup. I mean, they are the best team in the world. So I feel sorry for PSG. I'll have to start there because they had a great season and then Chelsea just top it with that win in USA. As for the learning of mistakes, Jules, I follow you. having said that when we saw the ticketing start at least at the real World Cup if I may say so it doesn't seem that they were quick learners but I think this will stick I think what was also in my not to try to always put our European glasses on when I saw the South American especially what they did in the Club World Cup very impressive I love the passion There were some great games there.
15:08And yes, the European clubs will complain about playing too much. But I think that is also a job of FIFA to bring also the great moments around. And if we'll have an improved FIFA Club World Cup, I think that this will get better.
15:25Julien Laurens:Csaka, what did you think of it all? I'm a little bit on the fence for this one. I take Jan's point too. I feel like this meant a lot more to countries outside of Europe than European clubs for obvious reasons. And every version of the Club World Cup seems to have that effect. But I appreciate that FIFA are, well, one, trying to grow the game and bring more corners of the earth's game together as they did. And I think that's a good thing. The issue for me, and again, Jan touching it, is the number of games that we're asking players to play. wherever you're from. So there has to be some kind of a balancing act.
16:01World Cup is not going to go anywhere. The continental competitions are not going to go anywhere. So that leaves two summers to try to fit something in. Now, either you smallen the continental and World Cup competitions so that there are less games in those and smallen this so that there are less games. So you aren't asking players to play as much as they are. and somehow even ask the same of the domestic leagues. But neither of those are going to happen. And more to the point, they continue to expand. So while you see value in it, you only see the World Cup getting bigger. You only see the continental competitions getting bigger.
16:45Where's the line in the sand here? And I just feel that for as good as it was, common sense has to come into play at some point.
16:52Julien Laurens:Stevie, I see you shaking your head. Oh, Bennett. Absolutely, Bennett. I mean, really, you know, we kind of talk about it as if FIFA are interested in it. You know, Xhaka is saying, well, FIFA, they want to expand it and include everybody. But they don't really. All they want to do is make money. They're only interested in making money. And Jan's talking about all the stuff they've learned. Well, they haven't learned a jot because you look at the World Cup and it's going to be the same fiasco again. You know, I mean, it's just nonsense. Absolutely get rid of it. And even when they have the Club World Cup, all of a sudden, what happened a couple of weeks ago or last week?
17:28The Intercontinental Cup. So that's another game for PSG. I mean, it's just nonsense. If you have to have some sort of crowning of the world champions, then have your European champions and your South American champions. Which we do already. Intercontinental Cup, which you do already. So, yeah, I'm sorry. Bennett, they have no interest in the players whatsoever. however, it's quite clear. They couldn't care less how many games the players play. And the last thing I'll say is the players' union should be ashamed of themselves. The players' union should be up in arms and telling players not to play in it.
18:05That's what they should be doing.
18:07Julien Laurens:Jan, I see you chuckling away there when Stevie was going off on his soliloquy. No, it's fair points. I get what you're saying. I mean, I think it's a general discussion, this. We also know that the players' organisations, Stevie, they didn't have a dialogue with FIFA. And that's been a bit worrying that the players' representatives. But the only way for players to play less games is to stop playing football games. But they are employed by the clubs and the clubs vote for this. They send the representatives to the organisation. But we can talk a lot about governing bodies in sport. And we know that that is a soap opera of Dynasty and Dallas level.
18:53All right.
18:54Julien Laurens:Well, there probably won't be much more talk about this on the next edition of ESPN FC. But there will be a lot of looking back at the game of the day. That will be Boxing Day, the 26th of December. And we'll be looking back at Manchester United's game with Newcastle. The Nunes Hislop Classico. One winner there.

You can't believe it can you, he's done it again. Torres keeps coming out with big goals, and Barcelona are out of jail. Extra time is looming.
22:29Julien Laurens:It's the goal, take care, cundecundecundecundecundeclimate goal. Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go. No! The most unlikely scorer is Jules Koundan and Bartolomew stealing the lead. It's really good who's flown that, I mean, goodness knows what sort of a fan he's going to get for that. He's losing it with the referee here and they're doing very well to keep him away. Show some estate and respect. The referee blows his whistle, Bartolomew have won the Copa del Rey. Barcelona have won all three Clásicos this season. Real Madrid out for revenge, but also to keep their season alive.
23:13Here's the goal! Mbappe scores and Real Madrid strike early. Mbappe's in again here, 2-0! Daniel Mopin and it's a goal! Eric Garcia, he's got Barcelona back in this game. And there's the equaliser, the wonder boy. And they're in here, Raffina, 3-2! And Raffina will make it 4-2! Real hit the self-distract button again. Barcelona go seven points clear, the title will surely be theirs. Bedlam in Barcelona. The stage set for the hottest ticket in world football. It's first against second, the big boys facing each other for the first time this year. Madrid have got a lot to answer for after losing four times last year to Barcelona.
24:02Mbappe's in behind here. And yes, he makes it count again. Unstoppable. Give him a chance. He's going to take it. Cut back and there's the equaliser. Berni Lopez. A passer, a level. Vinicius. Back still in play. Jude. It's turning. Jude Bellingham. Jude Bellingham on the back post. And Real Madrid are back in front. Finn Jr. to come off and he is not happy at all. I don't think Javi Alonso is going to like this much. No, should he? Terrible. and straight back down the tunnel, not off to see his teammates. That's a tantrum, there's no other word for it really. There's what, Vinic Juni, you'll have an argument, that's not like him.
24:39It's all kicking off and mayhem reigns at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. There are four clashes after the game which we do not want to see, but we've always said it, this game is a passion play, we saw it so many times. At the bottom line is that Real Madrid with goals from Kylian Mbappe and Jun Bellingham. have beat Barcelona by two goals to one, and they are rubbing that in.
25:07Julien Laurens:Well, from the Hislop Nunes Clasico to the real Clasico, we have thoroughly enjoyed what is one of, if not the biggest rivalry in world football. And I mean, Jules, even though earlier on in this year for the first half, it was very heavy, Barcelona winning it all, but then the most recent one, we did see Real Madrid finally get to land a punch on Barcelona, and then things just kind of got uglier. But in a good way for us neutrals, we're seeing, you know, players really getting at it again in the dugout. It kind of brings us back to the good old days of the Clásico, or maybe the days of when Jose Mourinho was there and loved to stir up the pot as well.
25:43Julien Laurens:It just finally feels like the rivalry and the bad blood in this rivalry is back. Yeah, I think you're right, Alexis. I think last season when Barcelona owned Real Madrid and owned the Clásico, let's be honest, there's no other way of putting it. They were far too good, far too dominant, far too strong, far too Lamin, Yamal and Rafinha, if you want, against not much really from Carlo Ancelotti and his boys at the time. With Xabi Alonso coming and they won that game, the last one that we saw, the two one, with a lot of beef at the end between Vini and Lamin and Carvajal and Lamin, before the game, after the game, a lot of tension.
26:19Julien Laurens:And we said on the show many times, we like it. Not just because we're the right holders, obviously, but also because that brings something a bit extra, that extra spice to a game that is already the biggest game in world football anyway. But if you have a bit of spice of Lamin talking pre-classical, you know, saying that Real Madrid cheats sometimes and this and that, and then obviously Carvajal after the game, after the win, coming to see him and say, I didn't like what you said. All of that, I think, is in a way, is very good, certainly for the viewers, for us. So it was great. It was not the most vintage of games, let's be honest, but Real Madrid won and they had to win because another defeat that would have been properly humiliating.
26:57Julien Laurens:Jan, you love some bad blood in big rivalries, don't you? Oh, I love it. I mean, for me, let's be honest. This is gladiator. This is Colosseum. I mean, we are fortunate in our job. We see so many games. I sometimes sit in Premier League games and I watch the Frankfurt play something in Bundesliga. I will have my little iPhone going on and another game as well. But when we see the El Clasico, I mean, we have to be honest. We can love English football. We can love German football. This is something else. This is to level up. I love the rivalry. I love Vinicius, you know, coming out again, having a fight.
27:35Rudiger throwing his bottle. Yamal, 12 years of age, doing a blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. I love it. I love it. This is the best game on the planet. We can compare with any boxing fight, any formula battle. This is the game. And I love El Clasico.
27:51Julien Laurens:I love it. These boys love some bad blood and scrapping as well. I mean, Xhaka, even though we did speak out a lot and strongly against a lot of these instances that we saw, the Vinny Jr. going down the tunnel and then coming back out for a scrap, Rudiger as well, Laminya Mal running his mouth off before, but it has brought something back to the Classico. Yeah. Classico is a drama. It's the entire show around the football game. The football game is ultimately the focus, but everything about the season kind of builds up to the two Clasicos and then everything after is all you talk about for weeks.
28:25And to Jan's point, it really doesn't matter where you are in the world. El Clasico is footballing world, stop, pay attention to one football game just for 90 minutes. It really just holds everybody's attention. And then to your point, Alexis, and everything around it, because of what it means to these two clubs historically and the players, you generally have the best players on the planet all on the park at the same time and the egos and the anger that kind of comes with that. It's pure drama with just a footballing background to it.
29:00Julien Laurens:CV, what have you made of it? Of course, you've played in some very feisty rivalries in your day, whether it's Merseyside Derby or Liverpool United. I've got to say, I love the drama on the field when the game's going on. The other stuff, I have no time for it. You mean the little fights that break out in the dugout? I mean, you're talking about a scrap in a fight. Yeah, I didn't see Henry hitting the ground. I didn't see Henry throwing them. They were being held back, Stevie. We can't just let them throw punches. This isn't hospital. That's Stevie's definition of a fight. If an ambulance isn't cool, they were all glad.
29:29Julien Laurens:You want to see punches landing. If there's no ambulance, that's not a proper spot. They were all glad to be held back, let me tell you. You're holding on. You want to see punches landing. You see Vinny? Vinny was giving all that until somebody grabbed him, and then he was giving...
29:48I want to see all that on the field. You want to see the punches on the field? I want to see physicality and I want to see chat and I want to see that while the game's going on.
29:58Julien Laurens:But don't you feel the game also shows it? The games have been, apart from the last one, I suppose. No, the games are fantastic. Loads of goals. It's the stuff afterwards that I think is a complete waste of time. And for me, it spoils the game. it spoils it for me I would rather you haven't brought up boxing I would rather not lumped out of each other for 90 minutes and as soon as the game's finished you do the right thing and you walk off and that's it and you shake hands and if you get beat you take it and take it into the next time that you face the guy all this posturing and shoving and nonsense it's not for me you've got to have some drama I'm a new yad.
30:44Drama. You know, Stephen, when you get into that argument... You do that one more time. I'm telling you. One more. Just do it one more time. It's a last chance. Hold me back.
30:59Julien Laurens:Hold me back. Hold me back. Yeah, yeah. But that's the feeling. I got Stephen's point. When Vinny comes on, I mean, he's not tall. I mean, he will not fight the big heavyweight. He wants someone to hold him back because he knows if he gets into a fight, then he's flat. So that is a part of it. But Steve, it's a good old school when people were fair and square and you went to the players' lounge afterwards and say, next time I'll kick you. Okay, see you then. That's the 80s and 90s. You know who's one little warrior that would not back down from any fight, though? Gavi. Oh. Gabby, when he had that stare down or stare up with Virgil van Dijk, I was like, what a king, what a king.
31:43Julien Laurens:He fears no one. Can't wait to see him. Yeah, van Dijk was like that. But he still stared at him. Benny Hill. Somebody hold him back. Benny Hill, Stevie. Stevie, Benny Hill. Well, there's plenty more drama coming from both Real Madrid and Barcelona when they return to action on ESPN. Plus, this is what awaits them in January. It is the Catalan Darby for Barcelona as they face their crosstown rivals, Espanyol. That's on the 3rd of January, 2.30 p.m. Eastern time is kickoff. And Real Madrid will be facing another regal club in Real Betis on January 4th. I like things my way, my coffee, my schedule, and my treatment.
32:26So I talked to my doctor about self-injecting with the Vivgard Hytrulo Pre-Filled Syringe, which contains FGAR Tegamon Alpha and Hyaluronidase QVFC. It's injected under your skin subcutaneously. It means I can inject in my space on my time. It's my treatment, my way. Visit VivGuardMyWay.com. That's V-Y-V-G-A-R-T MyWay.com. And talk to your doctor about VivGuard Hattrulo. Brought to you by Argenix.
32:55Julien Laurens:All right, Julian. How are you? Wow. Another year. What was that? He looks so French there, doesn't he? He still looks very French, especially with his PSG Santa hat. Well, we made Jules give us his best 11 of 2025 because we do not care for the FIFA one. So, Jules, walk us through it. Point on. Yeah, I mean, I didn't want to go too PSG heavy, to be fair. So, it was all you know. Oh, no. Thank you. Thank you. So, here you go. Donnarumma in goal I don't think there's any debate there Hakimi Mendes The two best Footbacks in the world Patro has been excellent In 2025 And It was between Saliba and Van Dijk For the second round But because Saliba Is Paris born and bred He got the nod Ahead of Virgil Van Dijk The midfield three Again I think Joe Neves And Fabian Ruiz Were very good With Vitinha But Vitinha Outstanding Maybe the best player In that position Right now in the world I went for Rice And Pedri Who's been a magician In 2025 And then from the front three, I just cheated a little bit and put Mbappe back onto the left-hand side so I could have Dembele central and Lamin-Yamal on the right.
34:10Julien Laurens:All right, well, now is the time where we get to rip it apart. Yep, I was going to say.
34:18Julien Laurens:Jan is the gift that keeps on giving. I didn't want to go PSG heavy. But they're either PSG heavy, PSG alum, or French. But Jan, what did you think of Jules' best XI for the calendar year of 2025? I think that is the best XI of PSG this season. I think that is a great PSG team. He put them out. He had a choice between Saliba and Virgil van Dijk. Surprisingly, he went for Saliba. It's a good team. If you do the Champions League team of the season, you can do it like this. I will, of course, no Norwegian hat on. I will put Erling Haaland in for 2025 as a whole. Absolutely. I will also see Kane and Olisse in there somewhere.
35:05And then we can discuss who we take out. And I guess it's a chance that there will be a French guy.
35:12Julien Laurens:There's a very high chance of that. Shaq, what do you make of it? I have no issue with Jules' 11. And to Jan's point, yes. OK, you can make arguments for Kane, Olisse and Haaland. but similarly Dembele, Mbappe and Laminya Mal who do you drop out of those three? So I'm siding with Jules here despite his obvious bias I mean you could have thrown Rafinha in there as well I was wondering if Rafinha was going to get a look in he's Brazilian though so he doesn't make the cup I think it's a good team, I think it's a good choice maybe Gabriel alongside Saliba instead of Pachul How could you not have Elling Haaland in there?
35:55He scored. OK, I make my case. I make my case. It's OK. And then Jules can have his team. And you guys can be nice at Christmas and agree with the French guys. And I say French guy because of the French team. But Elling Haaland last season, he played for a team that was not doing well. He never got a cross. And he never got a counterattack. And he still scored 30. This season he's going for fun. He's a top scorer in the qualification for the World Cup. He's taken his Norwegian team to the World Cup. I mean, I understand Jules have to put him in the play, but Elling Haaland would be the first one on the list.
36:32Julien Laurens:Jules, come on in and take yourself. He never got a cross. He never got a coach in a time. Oh, God. It's not fair. Life's hard for the big man. OK, do for Kane as well. Do for Kane. Oh, boy. He didn't get across, though. I can't believe it. You're so jealous. You're so jealous. Jules, do you want to chime in on the why you couldn't squeeze Erling Haaland in? Yeah, no, no, no. I completely understand Jan's point, and it's a really good point, to be fair. We can make the same for Kane, obviously, who's also had a very good 2025. Although Kane, unlike Haaland, and, you know, in a team that was functioning better last season, of course, but won the Bundesliga and reached the quarterfinals of the Champions League, let's remind Jan and everybody that Erling Haaland lost in the last 16 of the Champions League and obviously finished third in the Premier League as well but he did score a lot of goals I just as you know I like the Dembele story from where he was back in December to where he where he got and the ceiling that he reached in that Champions League final and all that second part of the season that's why he's the Ballon d 'Or and not Erling Haaland and I could not not have the Ballon d 'Or in our team of 2025 I love the number That was a casual.
37:52Julien Laurens:One thing I'll say to that. Go ahead, Jan. Okay, sorry. Now, just saying that, I love the love-actually stories. I put you, Grant, in the team.
38:04Julien Laurens:Not the love-actually stories. The one thing I'll say to that. I'm a Dembela story. While Dembela, certainly in the first half of the season, was the standout story, if not the standout player, of European football. I wonder how much injuries of late have kind of taken taken off from his 2025 in terms of that icing on the cake. I just wonder if, again, just missing as often as he has been over the last month or two has taken a little bit of the gloss off of what has been an outstanding year. Well, it's perfect timing that we've been talking about Ousmane Dembele because now we're going to go to the player of the year as crowned by our panelists.
38:44Julien Laurens:We had everybody vote on this panel right now, And this is what the results said. Dembele, yep. Despite what Xhaka said, he still reigns supreme in their minds, followed by Kylian Mbappé, Erling Haaland, Jan Olin at number three, Harry Kane at number four, and Rafinha finally getting at least some love from our panel here. He rounds out the top five. All right, who do I even go to first on this one? You know what, Jan, let me go to you first on this one. Haaland at number three. Well, I'm a big fan of democracy. So I will accept the vote. Absolutely. I will go for this vote. I understand what's been said.
39:25I understand that people feel that they have to make Mbappé. I love the Dembélé story as well. But I'm a bit with Xhaka because if you can see my list, I haven't even Dembélé in my team. And that's because we take the whole 2025. If you only did the Champions League, he was fantastic. And I followed this kid since he played at Dortmund. And you have to love Dembele, his comeback, taking PSG as one of the key figures to get a win. So I will accept the vote, but still have some other candidates. I accept the vote, but I'm calling for a recall. Oh.
40:10Julien Laurens:What do you feel should be changed, Shaq? No, no, no. So, well, you see my vote there. And again, a lot of my vote has to do with, I'm going to guess, recency bias and taking the entire year into context. As I mentioned, if you talk about the first half of the year, I think that my top three looks completely different. But just taking the calendar year into account, and again, I felt Dembele's injuries in the second half of this year. And then Harry Kane and how good Bayern Munich have been this season. You know, I know it's not winning the Champions League, which was back in May. But in this half of the year, given Bayern's start of the season, I just, and Kylian Mbappe's start of this season.
41:01I gave them the nod over Dembele.
41:03Julien Laurens:Can I just say, I'm a bit surprised that we didn't see Laminya Mal higher, or Rafinha higher. I think Stevie only had Laminya Mal in his top three, and they're the ones that won trophy after trophy after trophy after trophy, which surely we bring in. Spanish trophy after Spanish trophy. But then you draw that comparison, we're talking trophy after trophy, and significant trophies. Dembele is a clear favorite. Dembele, I think no arguments from me there, but Lamin maybe Rafinha even a little higher on that list, maybe even higher than a Kane. Well, let's be honest, we're splitting hairs here, aren't we?
41:38Julien Laurens:Or a Haaland? There we are. We're splitting hairs. We're splitting hairs. We're Mbappé. I know Jules is going to come after me and I'm not taking anything away from what he does individually, but surely trophies. Trophies to your name in a calendar year. Where's his trophies? Oh, oh, oh, Jules. It's a good point. Thank you. And I don't support neither Madrid or Barcelona. Let me know. But trophies should count. But then to that, I can answer you that, you know, everything that Kylian can do right now is carry this Real Madrid team and score goals, which he has done. The rest, you can't win a Champions League on your own.
42:17Julien Laurens:We know that by now. You can't win La Liga on your own. We know that by now. Lamin had Rafinha to win La Liga, and Rafinha was the player of the season in La Liga. Not even Lamine or not Lewandowski or not Pedri or nobody else, really. Right now, there's Mbappe. And it's not just the rest of Real Madrid. It's Mbappe and nothing else of Real Madrid. So it's difficult for him. All right. Jude Bellingham said hello, Jules. How are you? Are you home? Which Jude Bellingham? The one from 2025 or the one from 2024? Joe Bellingham from Dortmund. Yeah, Joe Bellingham. I think he's done. Mark Bellingham.
42:54Mark Bellingham. Mark Bellingham. Mark Bellingham. His dad said he should have won it. Oh, boy. Jude second.
43:05Julien Laurens:There are shots being fired all around. Anyways, we're going to fire some more shots over on Extra Time. 44:28Julien Laurens:But because Saliba is Paris born and bred, he got the nod ahead of Virgil van Dijk. The midfield three, again, I think Joe Neves and Fabian Ruiz were very good with Vitinha. But Vitinha, outstanding, maybe the best player in that position right now in the world. I went for Rice and Pedri, who's been a magician in 2025. And then from the front three, I just cheated a little bit and put Mbappe back onto the left-hand side so I could have Dembele central and Lamin-Yamal on the right. 47:38Julien Laurens:He didn't get across, though. Oh, God. I can't believe it. You're so jealous. You're so jealous. Jules, do you want to chime in on the why you couldn't squeeze Erling Haaland in? Joe Bellingham. I think he's done. Mark Bellingham. Mark Bellingham. Mark Bellingham. Mark Bellingham. Mark Bellingham.
53:44His dad said he should have won it. Oh, boy. Jude second.
53:52Julien Laurens:There are shots being fired all around. Anyways, we're going to fire some more shots over on Extra Time. We've got Jan, Jules, Shaka and Stevie on this festive one today where we're going to be answering all your questions. So join us then. The 2025 MLS Cup is underway in South Florida. This is settled and it's in to the MLS Cup.
54:25Julien Laurens:Inter-Miami Champions of Interlake Soccer.
54:32NWSL Final for Washington. It's the first time in the playoffs that they have actually traveled. Whereas Gotham, they're used to being on the road.
54:40Julien Laurens:Grudina, the bicycle, the sack. Who comes to release? Rose LaValle! Goal! What a big Gotham! That's it. Game over. Gotham are the champions.
54:57Julien Laurens:All right. Well, you'll get a recap of all of the best stories from the CONCACAF region in 2025 on the latest edition of Football America. Look at that. Our Ale Moreno and Shaka Hislop back in a suit, breaking it all down with Christina Alexander.
55:16Julien Laurens:All right. Well, it's time to get to the top 10 storylines. Oh, boy. Of the upcoming summer, because it's going to be all about the FIFA World Cup. But I only trusted one person to give us his storylines, and that's our Julian Laurent. So Jules, give us your top 10 storylines as we head into a World Cup year. Here we go. We're going to go from 10 to 1, obviously. Remember the draw? Well, no, because everybody has forgotten how long and cringy that World Cup year was. YMCA! It was YMCA! Hello, Shaquille O 'Neal, that's for sure. In 9th, we decided to go for what is going to be a first ever, and no surprise, it's in the US, but in the World Cup final on July 19th this year, we will have a show at halftime, like the Americans doing so well in the Super Bowl.
56:11Julien Laurens:So instead of having a halftime break of between 10 and 15 minutes, we'll have something over 20 minutes. The players will have to get used to it. In 8th, we discussed their length on the show. Shaka and I were not too on agreement on that, but we have had City teams for the So England, Spain, Argentina and France were all seeded, which meant they could not face each other before the semifinal if they get there in the top of their group, which we felt was a little bit unfair. In seventh, the new water breaks that will be introduced during the World Cup. It's okay for players to drink halfway through the first half and the second half.
56:47Julien Laurens:However, each of them lasts three minutes. That's a timeout in basketball. This is a time out in NFL when the coach can coach, the manager can change things, and I think that's a little bit unfair. But let's see how it goes. In sixth place, we decided to go for all those great stories about the teams that qualify. From Uzbekistan to Jordan to Kurosawa to Haiti to Cabo Verde. We will have new teams, new players, new fans who will discover the World Cup, and that's a wonderful thing. Now the top five, in fifth, Gammacotti is not on the show unfortunately for us. But let's laugh another time at the Italians who once again have failed to qualify directly for a World Cup.
57:30Julien Laurens:They can still do it through the playoffs, but it was a lot of fun seeing them failing again. In fourth, for Stevie, of course, Scotland and that incredible game against Denmark and the way they qualified, the McTominay overhead kick, everything in that game. The McLean, 45 yards lob at the end. It was incredible and probably deserved to be higher up than fourth, even. And now the top three in third. New blood coaches, because for the first time, we'll have a lot of coaches who've never coached in World Cup, from Pochettino to Ancelotti to Tufon to Cannavado to Nagelsmann to De La Fuente. Even if they were at the Euros, the World Cup will be new for them.
58:10Julien Laurens:So it will be interesting to see how they manage the pressure and the expectations. In second, yes, Cristiano Ronaldo will play the first two games of Portugal at the World Cup when he should not have been playing the first two games at the World Cup. And then finally, the first one, and we kept the best for last. This is going to be the last dance for Messi, for Cristiano, for Modric, potentially for Van Dijk or Salah or Kane even. So let's just hope that for the ones who played in the last World Cup of their career, it will be a great occasion. Woo! Amazing, Jules. Nobody was going to clap him off.
58:47Julien Laurens:He finished right by the music. That was perfect. We'd rather just let you look weird. Oh, Stevie's been bullying me all day. It's okay. We'll take it. Right, who wants to chime in first? Jan, what did you make of Jules' top storylines? Which one screams to you? Well, first of all, you know when I start the sentence with I love Jules, so I would start there. I love Jules, but he had a chance when he had the fifth Italy not qualifying. I mean, it's a quite big story that Norway beat them 7-1 over two games. And Erling Haaland, one of the best players, if not the best player in the world, can play at the World Cup.
59:27It's the first time Norway's qualified since 1998. And he's not even on the 10 list. Jules, what do you have against Norwegians? I mean, yes, we love Scotland and we know the heroics thing. But think, I mean, Norway at the World Cup, Elling Hall at the World Cup, knocking out Italy. 4-1, we beat them in Milano. That's surely going to need to take their water away. I mean, it's hot there. They should have water.
59:52Julien Laurens:So when I sent the top ten to producer Pete, obviously, and I put Italy, on purpose, I knew we would discuss Norway. And I didn't want to talk about Norway myself in the top ten because it was quite hectic one after the other. And I knew that you would be able to be very happy with the fact that Norway knocked out Italy and that they would be at the World Cup since you were there. Since you were there at the World Cup in 1998. Let me just say, though, he did mention Scotland by name, Jan. But no, he doesn't want to mention Norway. I'm just putting it on there, Jan. But as far as we know, Jules got a lot of Scottish friends and there are some Scottish things there.
1:00:33So that's fair. I accept that Steve is an old man with a dignity and a bit of fairness. He's more afraid of him. He's more afraid of him. I lost my dignity a long time ago. I don't think he has a dignity.
1:00:54Julien Laurens:Maybe, but dignity. Don't insult Stevie like that. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. Hey. Oh, boy. You're happy that Jules put in Scotland. Had to. Yeah, I find it really hard not to act like an old gazer. And there's a couple of things in there that really annoyed me. Go off. Go off, Stevie. Go off. Honestly, the first one. You made a list. I've got you through a list. The first one. You made a list. He's checking it twice. was absolutely the Super Bowl-type halftime show. Oh, God, yeah, yeah. And actually, Joe said it perfectly at the end of it. He said, the players will have to get used to it. If there's one thing FIFA do, they don't care about the players, the players will have to get used to it.
1:01:39That's exactly what Infantino probably said when somebody said, oh, it's going to be 20, 25 minutes. He probably said, they're going to have to get used to it. And of course, Cristiano Ronaldo's ban. If ever, if ever there was the wrong thing to do, that's it, right there. Just because of the door. Exactly. You know it's the wrong thing, but you're so unsurprised by it. You know it's the wrong thing. You're so unsurprised by it. I'm not going to do the right thing. I loved your list, Jules. But the other stuff, I get positive. I thought it was good. You thought it was good? Yeah, I thought it was good.
1:02:16No, it was a good list. All right. Big time.
1:02:19Julien Laurens:All right. Okay. All right, Jules, you ruffled a few feathers overall. You nearly started. But I would just say, if I just say, if you want to go to holiday to Scandinavia, go to Sweden.
1:02:35Julien Laurens:Jules is not welcome. So much better country anyway. In Norway.
1:02:41Julien Laurens:If you want to see more of Jules ruffling feathers, probably with Gab about that Italy, there's a fresh episode of the Gab and Jules show. dropping for Christmas Day. So they will be talking about the top 10 footballing stories of 2025. Don't miss it. 1:04:54Julien Laurens:The West Bengali goalkeeper, Rahul. Absolute stunner. Is it a system to go? What are the odds? Right? What are the odds? Wow. I'll tell you what. Goalkeepers, they can do it all. But they're down to leave me one. And this coming from the League's Cup, Cruz Azul against the Azul Saunders, Pedro de la Vega, with a nice little first-time volley here. I agree with that. I'm kind of agree with that. That is special. That is, that really is, yeah. That's special. No arguments from anyone. No. No. No. No. I don't know. I don't think my argument counts, but I still like our West Bengali goalkeeper, Raul.
1:05:35Julien Laurens:But whatever. Jules Jan, what did you think of it, Jules? Let me start with you first. Yeah, amazing. I mean, I'm surprised there's no earning Holland. in this top 20 but that's one for another match it's one for another I would have put him number one for me I would have put him number one but you know straight off the bat amazing top 20 incredible no arguments no I think it was too many French scorers none I mean I mean I'm not there no but but I would say something I think that the winner fantastic that was the technique used there it's like tennis fantastic that is a fantastic goal I also see that seven of 20 of the goals are long shots.
1:06:18Sometimes as a striker, I will feel that those long shots, it's not luck because they're fantastic good, but it's just luck that it goes in. For me, the best goals is the guy, for example, from Phoenix, the guy who turned it around there with using his technique and his balance scoring that goal. And of course, that best Bengali goal. I mean, Albert Einstein wouldn't have found any formula that he can kind of count that in. I mean, fantastic, funny to watch. Absolutely. Isn't it amazing how everybody looks at goals differently? Yeah. You know, Jan's favourite's that. That one, I don't particularly like it.
1:06:55Really? I think the best goal's the first one. The Arsenal goal. From Mikel Marino? Just lovely and crisp passing and moving. The ball's... I mean, the defence don't move. They're just too busy watching the passes go on. Let's have to leave it. Your music's playing.
1:07:11Julien Laurens:All right, well, that's it for you. Christmas extravaganza, but don't go anywhere because we've got your very festive questions for extra time next
1:07:26Julien Laurens:All right welcome into extra time stevie did you want to finish your conversation? Yeah producers started rolling the music mid-answer you got the music there Stevie's a good word to explain Most like the Oscars. Most like the Oscars. Yeah, yeah. Let me finish. Let me finish. Just custom pie me right in the face. I need to thank my agent. I need to thank my agent. Stevie said, do you want to know which goal I thought was the best? Press the button. Press the music. No, we don't. That's how producer's here. No, we don't want to know what you thought was the best. Producer Pete says he doesn't have any more time for this.
1:08:01Julien Laurens:All right, let's get into the first question, which is a bit of a wordy one. Complicated. It's a bit complicated and it did stump us. So this one, who is this year's Rudolph player that no clubs wanted to play in their games until the right manager or Santa brought out their best to star for a club and change some opinions? Maybe a nice redemption story. I have an answer. I know. Anthony. Oh, you love you some, Anthony. How many of these are going to be actual like X-Man United? Exactly. All of them. Jack Grealish. I will throw in Jack Grealish. Jack Grealish, I mean, he won the treble with Manchester City.
1:08:42A great player, but it seems that he sits better in an Aston Villa team or an Everton team. So I will throw him in as my Rudolph.
1:08:52Julien Laurens:Okay, Jack Grealish, you're sticking with Anthony. I'm sticking with Anthony as my Rudolph. Stevie, do you want me to go to Jules first? I don't think of any this year. But you're one from last year? Well, McTominay, last year. Man United got rid of him and then he won a bit clear. Well, in that same vein, you could say Rasmus Hojland. Rasmus Hojland. Rasmus Hojland, yeah. Any Manchester United player. Just any Man United player that's left. Yeah, there's a lot of them. Probably except... Rashford. Rashford? Yeah, Marcus Rashford. Marcus Rashford. If we're going back a year, Rafinha was... Oh, yeah.
1:09:23Oh, yeah. If Barcelona could complete the Nico Williams signing and he was just one best president.
1:09:29Julien Laurens:Shaka, am I to believe that you wanted an honourable mention for Nicholas Jackson? Yeah. No, please. No, no, no, no, no, no. Yeah, I'm sorry. No, no, no. Shaka, explain yourself. So, let me tell my story, Jan. So, before we came home... Play the music, play the music.
1:09:52A good friend of mine is a big Chelsea fan, and we have a bet. So his bet is if Nicholas Jackson comes back to Stamford Bridge in January, he'll end the season with more goals than João Pedro. I took that bet. Now, don't get me wrong. I took that bet. But it clearly shows that at least one Chelsea fan thinks the world of Nicholas Jackson.
1:10:14Julien Laurens:And nobody on this panel is buying that. I took the bet with a heartbeat. Let me tell you. I was like, whoa. What a bet that is. Everyone found a player now. Majority of them ex-United players. Next question. Jan, rank these strikers. Haaland, Ronaldo as in off-phenomenal, Brazilian Ronaldo. Why ask Jan and who Haaland on his list? Just leave on Haaland and just give him two names. No, no, no. Okay, and then the final one, Thierry Henry. Go ahead, Jan. He's only the striker we have. No, this is like a lifetime award thing because Haaland is in the middle of his career. And when you see what Ronaldo, the Brazilian Ronaldo, did on the pitches in Italy back in the days when he played for Inter.
1:10:59Unbelievable. So I will put, in terms of potential, I will put Ronaldo, Brazilian number one, Henry, number two, and Haaland, number three.
1:11:11Julien Laurens:Wow. I have no idea. I'm not Jules. I'm not Jules just using my French passport or my Norwegian passport. I didn't say anything. Poor Jules has got to buy in the passport. Jules is agreeing. Jules is agreeing with Jan. I'm still tapping spin.
1:11:32Julien Laurens:When Jan said that Jules, if he's trying to go to any Scandinavia and come to Sweden. I don't agree with Jan. You don't agree with Jan? Who would you have? I would have Haaland second, then Henry. Okay. Henry couldn't have a bandeau from two yards when he was at Juventus. Ooh. Ooh. He was quite okay for Arsenal, though. In fact, you know that question? You know that question we had, the first question? The Rudolph one. Terry Henry. OK. Because he couldn't score to save his life for Juventus when it asked, no one became a superstar. There you go. There you go, except for that just wasn't this year.
1:12:11Just wasn't this year?
1:12:12Julien Laurens:Yeah, exactly. You hate French players. Jules, I don't know, I don't know what you mean. Let's not gang up on Jules. He put Scotland high on your list. On his list. I wasn't having a go at Jules. Didn't even talk about Norway. He didn't even mention Norway. Name an honourable pass. How many years is it since they got? 40? Who? Norway. 40 years since they got there? Yeah. That'd be 40! Jan played! Jan Sansaklaus, he doesn't age. How many years? No, in 94, 98 in European Championship 2000. So that's some years ago. Over 30 years ago. Not that far, are we? No, but still, just not good enough for a mention.
1:12:54Julien Laurens:Do you know what I mean? No, no. Poor Norway, man. What more do they have to do? Anyways, next question. For everyone, which of your ESPN FC co-workers are the most like one, Santa, two, Rudolph, and three, Buddy the Elf? I hope everyone's watched a movie. You know Will Ferrell? No, Santa. You never watch Will Ferrell who plays Elf? No, no, my cup of tea. All right. So, all right. I got Santa, but how are you like Rudolph? Maybe just the star of the show or with a red nose. If Marino was still here. Oh, that nose would be out. We're getting it, Paul. That was the reddest, biggest nose for sure.
1:13:39Julien Laurens:Paul Marino would definitely. Paul's getting it. Yeah. And how are you like Buddy the Elf? Or you could be like Rudolph in the sense that you get a redemption story. Who's Buddy the Elf? Just maybe a good, happy, jolly old person. So are you just happy and jolly? Happy, jolly, a bit weird. Am I describing myself? Oh, boy. You said that. I never had to get away from it. Jolly, happy, weird. You are wearing a Man United Christmas sweater. You should see what the back says. Oh, I saw. We won't go further. Yeah, show everybody. You can't mention it or not. Santa, a little bit darky. Dark is like Santa.
1:14:20Julien Laurens:Okay, yeah. Hold on, show viewers the back of your sweater please. I'm going to show the back of my jumper. It says, treble 99. Yeah, we're not living in the past much around here, are we? There you go. Someone who's still living in the past. Stevie at his back says, treble 26. Yeah! I would say Santa, I would start by saying who is not Santa, that is Craig. Can you imagine? I mean, if you're, okay, I'm going to wish for Kristen. No, no. If he asks the Grinch, then we could put Craig there. For me, Rudolph is Leboeuf. He is a Rudolph. Frank is very Rudolph. Yeah, he would have a Rudolph. And you know who I love as Buddy the Elf?
1:15:09I love Mario. Mario is just the happiest, go luckiest man ever. He is. So I make Mario make up my body the elf.
1:15:18Julien Laurens:And you're saying a little weird too, because body's a bit weird. Yeah. You, you, you, never mind. That's me then. Jules, what about you? I think I'll have Dan Thomas as body the elf. Very accurate. Actually, yeah. You could pick Dan up and put him anywhere in the house. He's on the line. He's the elf on the shelf. That's good. Yeah, elf, we're going to add elf on the shelf. We'll add elf on the shelf. Hey, Dan, come here. Stick it on, huh? Oh, boy. Oh, God. Oh, goodness me. I think I'll have Marcotti. Marcotti Asanta, he's the only one with the right shape, size. Yeah, he would fit the clothes.
1:16:01Julien Laurens:Unattached. Wow, everybody's throwing punches. Oh, boy. Amazing. And then Dembela, Jules was at Dembela's Rudolph. You need to mention Dembela. Player of the season. That's a great redemption story, though, too. All right, next question. What is your favorite Christmas song, and are you allowed to play Christmas music before or after Thanksgiving for Americans? In Europe, do you wait until December to start playing Christmas music? Oh, wow. I can start there. I can start there because we in our family, we start 1st of December. So the 24th of December, Michael Bablé is the most unpopular man in the world because I've heard him singing 6 ,000 songs before Christmas Eve.
1:16:53But I love him. I love him till 23rd, like the 23rd. And he's fantastic. But if I have Bablé the 25th, I'm going to faint because I've heard him so many times if I go for my favorite I would go for Maria Carey all I want for Christmas I love that song yeah yeah somebody somebody sent me driving home for Christmas oh yeah on a loop yeah well I can't play it can I check it home for Christmas thank you dude dude dude dude dude dude dude dude dude dude dude dude dude dude dude dude we can't we can't we can't oh I've played for you great song great song Stevie what about you oh easy Slade oh yeah so here it is Merry Christmas everybody's having fun so here we are Merry Christmas everybody's having fun.
1:17:55Asperger's a pretty famous song. I thought you were a Parang non-shaka. I can relate to the people at Trinidad and Tobago have their own Christmas music. Yeah, we do. We are Parang. It's Spanish origin, mixed in with English language. But Stevie, Stevie, you have to give one, Stevie, you have to give one someone to a Liverpool boy, John Lennon, with, so this is his Christmas. The song is fantastic as well.
1:18:23Julien Laurens:All right. Jules? I have no Christmas. Yeah. Jules, you have a French one? I go for Last Christmas. Last Christmas, George Michael. Oh. Oh, yeah. But then you can't start the Christmas songs before December the 1st. This is not allowed. I agree with you. I agree with you. 100%. I'm going to tell my daughter that. One of my daughters is she's a 12-month-a-year Christmas person. Oh, wow. I kid you not. The third daughter. I'm an 11-month-a-year Halloween person. Yeah, I know. I'll get festive for Christmas, and then I go back on my Pennywise. You know, like eight? Stephen King's eight? No? Okay.
1:19:02Julien Laurens:All right, next question. Next question. For Stevie, Shaka, and Jan. Sorry, Jules. What was the nicest Christmas gift you ever received from any of your former clubs, and did you get Christmas bonuses? It's an easy answer. And strangely, it's the same answer for both questions. What? Nothing. You didn't get anything? Nothing. Not even a little bottle of fizz? Nothing. Nothing. That's shocking, because I feel like British people are really big on Christmas. We used to get a turkey in Liverpool. Yeah? Like a whole grain? Uncooked. Do that face again. I said a turkey by the way It's a big old one Sometimes people just give the Oh It was about a tenner Size turkey Oh wow Ten quid I tell you I tell you the worst Christmas gift I've become From Swindon town We were in the Premier League We were struggling I was struggling And in Norway And in Europe We do Christmas Eve This is 24th This is our big day And at four o 'clock I had to play for Swindon B, the second team, against Wickham Wanderers, the B team.
1:20:18And I played four o 'clock at 24th of December. My whole family was waiting outside. It was windy. It was raining. It was cold. I was the worst man on the pitch. I came home at six o 'clock and I opened the door and said to my family, have a look at me now. It's not possible to get lower in my football career than I am now, by the way. So that is the worst present ever. Yeah, that's hard. That's tough. Wow. That's hard.
1:20:43Julien Laurens:I felt bad there. That's true, mate. And the rest is history. And the rest is history. And the rest is a Rudolph story. It's a Rudolph. But, Yad, you are a true Rudolph story. Because look at you now. Yeah, look at me now. Sitting with you guys. Look at me now. In the town, are you watching? Yeah. All right. Final question. Shaka and Alexis. Trinidad and Tobago versus Jamaica Christmas dinner. Ooh. I'm not going to try to be biased here. What do you have in Trinito? You know, we have better food than you. Oh, no, we're not going to start this. We're not going to start this. Because we do not have.
1:21:17What do you eat? What do you eat? Everything.
1:21:20Julien Laurens:No, but what do you do? What's like your main thing? I think for us, we'll do cargo. For Christmas specifically, a Christmas, something that we have, Christmas and nothing else. Pastels. Yeah, that's nice. Yeah, I know. Pastels, what's that? It's kind of like a tamale. Yeah. What is tamale? It's a meat in a corn casing. You grind down the corn. I got a big one for Christmas.
1:21:50Julien Laurens:I didn't know how well versed you were with Tamales, Stevie. Oh, me, Tamales. I feel like we do oxtail, we do curry goat. Some people will do ham. We do rice and gungo peas. We do ham for Christmas. Gungo peas. Gungo peas. Gungo peas. It's a kind of pea. We call them pigeon peas. I got the pea bet. It was a pea bet I got. I didn't know the gunga bet. Rice and gunga peas. I'm going to make some of those. Is this a type of pea? We use a lot in the Caribbean. And we make it in rice with like a coconut milk. Cozen pea bet, right? And we generally only do a ham for Christmas. Yeah, we only really do ham for Christmas.
1:22:29Listen, Toronto, we have fantastic. It's not even a competition.
1:22:32Julien Laurens:Jamaica would win all day every day, as we tend to do in pretty much every day. You all have good oxy, good jill chicken, but that's it. That's it? Good oxy, good jill chicken. Shaka patties? Where is your soup from today, Shaka? Is it not a Jamaican restaurant? Play the music. Did I never see you? Trinidad has the best food. Play the music. But Shaka stays living at our Jamaican restaurants, buying up our food, so you know what? Case closed. Play the music. Trinidad has the best food. I will just say at the end, before we say Merry Christmas, Jules, if you come to Norway, I will give you the best time of your life.
1:23:07Jules, that sounds like a threat. I can't wait. I'm on my way, my friend. Jules, I think that's right. Stay away. Stay away, Jules.
1:23:17Julien Laurens:Jules, are you a fan of Norwegian food? You have to bring Dembele. You have to bring Dembele. I bring Dembele. Between Jamaica, Scotland, Trident, Tobago and Norway. I go to Norway, Strayway. There's no discussion. I want to eat Trinidad Tobago. I have no clue what he talks about, but I want that food. Come on, come for Carnaval. Don't call me Scotland, Jules. We won't let you. Come for Carnaval. Yeah, come to Jamaica. We will treat you very well. I would love to come there. I made my debut in Granada. I'm from Norway. I played my first game in Granada. That's right in the corner. Yeah. The Spice Isles.
1:23:59Julien Laurens:See you. I'll be missing for a couple of weeks in February. I've already put them on my table. For Carnival? Play the music. Shaka, I asked you if you were playing Carnival. Play the music. Anyway, ESPN FC will be back on Boxing Day. Make sure to join us then. But you can't count on Shaka joining us next year. It's everything, apparently.
