In short

ESPN FC Extra Time discussion of the Champions League semi-final first leg PSG vs Bayern Munich (5-4), plus brief debate on Real Madrid’s reported interest in Jose Mourinho and predictions for the other semi-final Arsenal vs Atletico Madrid.

Guests

Dan Thomas (host), Craig Burley (former player/analyst), Ali Moreno (analyst). Later segments include Stuart Robson and Frank (analysts) joining for Extra Time.

Guest backgrounds

Burley and Robson are ex-professional footballers turned pundits; Moreno is a football analyst/commentator.

Key claims

The match was “brilliant” and driven by pace and attacking courage rather than midfield control; PSG had “more danger” despite Bayern’s early control and late comeback. Defending was punished by small mistakes and transitions. Refereeing decisions (Davies handball; Diaz foul/penalty debate) were contentious.

Notable examples

Kane’s penalty (16’), Scalier equalizer, controversial Davies handball leading to Dembele’s 3-2, Kabrasquellia’s two goals including a 4-2, and the Luis Diaz run-and-finish goal praised as the best.

0:52Welcome into the latest edition of ESPN FC. I'm Dan Thomas, joined by Craig Burley and Ali Moreno. What a game we saw in a Champions League semi-final first leg today. PSG taking on Bayern Munich. Sit back, relax, let me take you through everything that happened. It would be 16 minutes in that Luis Diaz would be brought down, Harry Kane then scoring the penalty. PSG, though, would make it 1-1 as Kamakaz Scalier would get the equaliser. Alise would be a tormentor to the PSG defence throughout the tie. However, it would be Jaunevez who would make it 2-1 from a corner in the 33rd minute. Ten minutes later, though, Elize would make it 2-2 and on the stroke of half-time, it'd be a controversial penalty that would be awarded handball against Alphonso Davies.

1:37We'd see Ousmane Dembele convert to make it 3-2. Into the second half we go, Kabarskelia would score a beautiful goal to get his second to make it 4-2. Conrad Lyman, who had just come on the field, got sucked out of position by Desiree Due. Hakimi gets in behind, Cabrasquellia with the finish.

2:20way. No, no. And I also felt this was nothing more than an appetizer for tomorrow. Yes, indeed. Well, of course. I mean, we're going to get... There's lots of this game to pick apart, but overall, it was just brilliant. Honestly, I'm going to say this to you. I wouldn't know where to start picking it apart bit by bit. It was just an amazing game of football. And yeah, you could pick apart some of the defending. Like Ali said, Leimer comes on, he goes in with Dewey, Hakimi's in behind. You know, Stanisic gets spun in behind with Cavett-Skelia. There's lots of the defensive aspect you could look at.

2:58But the way I would sum up this game, there are so many talented players on that field that they're just doing some of the most brilliant stuff. And sometimes if you just make a small mistake defensively or get yourself in an average position, on both sides they've just got top quality that is exposing that sort of weakness or that area or that pass and I think that's why we saw the game that it was because we should enjoy this because and we always thought it was going to be that way we don't think we thought it was going to be nine goals today, I think we thought it was going to be you know, three, four, maybe five but I think we should enjoy it we've seen a lot of average football this year in several leagues.

3:48And what we saw today was two teams with some brilliant talent across the board just going toe-to-toe. But I do feel, even going back to Munich, one goal in it, it just looks to me as good as Bayern are, and they are a good side, that PSG just have that little bit more danger in their stomach. Most people, after watching this game, their reaction would be, it's a shame. It's a darn shame that this is the semifinal and that these teams are not meeting in the final. I would argue it's a great thing. We get to watch it twice. Double bubble. Yes, absolutely. And beyond that, what I think is really encouraging from both teams is that they play without fear.

4:38They're not concerned about, are we exposed over here? Do we have balance over there? Do we have cover over here? They're going for it. Both of the teams are going forward. They are in a back and forth, and they don't care. And while there may be some purists out there, Stevie Nichol, that could be having a heart attack, thinking about, good Lord, where is the defending? I'm thinking, let's encourage more of this. Teams that at the semifinal stage of Champions League, they're getting after each other and exploiting the talented players that they have in the attack. Robert, it's almost like a different sport, isn't it, compared to certainly what we saw at the weekend and what we've seen in the Premier League this season?

5:20Absolutely. You know, I'm frustrated so many times when teams pass it for the sake of passing it. They find an opening and then they go back again when they could expose the opening. We don't see any individual brilliance in some of the Premier League games and some of the games we've seen in Spain at times. But today you had players that wanted to pass it forward. You had players that wanted to run forward. You had individuals that when they had the chance to run 1v1, ran with the ball and were successful running with the ball. They picked out the forward pass. Even going back to the very last goal of the game, Harry Kane picks it up and he's just playing the ball in behind for a great run.

5:54And then that exposes Marquinhos. So a lot of the offensive problems were caused by the speed in which both teams played. And that's what you want to see week in, week out. Players playing forward, forward runs, and individuals going past defenders. It was great to watch, wasn't it? Yes, speed's a great word, isn't it, Frank? Yes, it is. And I was amazed. And I thought, you know, as a former defender, I wouldn't have been happy to be in any of the two teams because in that position, because they were so talented, as the others have said, that even the best defenders, they're under trouble because they do so many runs.

6:31They do so many things. There's so many moves that you don't know where to go. And as Craig alluded, you cannot make any, even small mistakes because you know you're going to be punished. I mean, the best example is to see how Nuno Mendes has struggled today against Michael Olize. I never seen Nuno Mendes being so much into trouble for the past two years. The guy has been the best defender in the world. And today, he struggled like the others. And we could have seen Hakimi, of course, with Luis Diaz. I mean, that was insane. Marquinhos is one of the best defenders in the world. I mean, on the fourth goal.

7:08you could have seen Frank LaBeouf in the same trouble. That was really insane. I enjoyed the game. Yes, the defensive aspect of the game has been forgotten and bought for the good of football and we enjoy it. And on top of it, as I started my explanation about that game, it's nothing you can do much because of the talent and the moves and the spirit of both teams. and thanks to the two coaches who let the players go and enjoyed the game. It's the semi-final of the Champions League. 5-4. Thank you very much. And I know we're going to get to tomorrow's game at some point. But I honestly look at that today and every game is different, obviously.

7:56And people set up differently. But looking at how these two played, the pace of which they played, the pace in which they went from one penalty area to the other penalty area, the pace in which they got it wide. And as Robbo said, they ran at people, individual battles, not taking the easy option and going back out. I don't think the other semi-finalists could have lived with these teams today. Now, when the final comes along, whoever's in it, it could be a different matter. You know, somebody could have an off day and it might be more of a grind. But looking at how these both teams played today and looking at the form of the others, Athletes are slightly better, but they're certainly a rollercoaster.

8:37But Arsenal have been off colour for sure. It's hard to see how they would live with this kind of pace of play. If either of these sides, whoever gets the final was to play with that intensity and that incisiveness and that quality, it would be hard to see what Atleti or Arsenal were going to do to try and stop that. Because it looked almost unstoppable today. I mean, Bayern had control of the game early, and then it completely swung, and then it looked as if it could have got to 6, 7. You're even thinking at one point, this could be 7 or 8 too here. And then all of a sudden, I don't know why, if it was the substitutions or PSG took a little bit of a back step, but then Bayern regained this control of the game, not on the scoreboard, but in terms of possession and being dangerous.

9:25And it just, it seemed to me that however many punches PSG gave Bayern on the nose, they just kept coming back. And they ground that out right to the end, and that has given them a chance in Munich. But, you know, if you see a better game than that, or you've seen one in Europe this year, you've got to tell me about it. At 5-2, it was over. At 5-2, you fell, good Lord, yes, we're closer to a 6-2, 7-2 than we are to Bayern coming back. At 5-4, I think Vincent Kompany and Bayern Munich go home encouraged about the fact that they were able to come back. Let me just address the pace of the game and something that the guys have brought up.

10:07The pace of the game was such that it skipped totally, completely, 100%, any sort of sense of control through the midfield. The midfield area, who we think that's an area where PSG can have an advantage, where we think that Bayern Munich, through Joshua Kimmich, can control the game, the midfield was not there. Vitinha wasn't actually ruling on controlling the pace of the match. These players were bypassed totally by, let's get the ball out wide to Ulisse. Let's get the ball out wide in transition to Dembele or in behind or Carabasquilla in a wide area. Let's get these guys involved. Luis Diaz running from deep trying to get in behind.

10:42It was no longer about, let's just possess the ball for the sake of possessing the ball. Let's not easily and slowly work our way up. It was, we find that first pass forward and then let's find a mismatch. And truth be told, mismatches are everywhere when you consider you have a guy like Michael Olisse that does what he did to Nuno Mendes as many times as he did. And then when Marquinhos would come out, he would get around him as well like he wasn't even there. When you see Cabralesqueda score the goal in the manner in which he did, in which Stanisley just takes one step, he's out of position.

11:16He gets back. He thinks he's in position. He thinks he has help coming from the inside. He go, far post, take that. When Marquinhos, he's beaten in behind by Luis Diaz, he does enough to delay. But the touchback from Luis Diaz and the little something, and then he goes far post. So the point is, the pace of the game affected the way that the defenders and the midfield played in this match. And it tells you that when you have pace with talent and guys that are willing to take chances going forward, it doesn't matter what Marquinhos wanted to do. It doesn't matter what Jonathan Tau wanted to do or what Mekano wanted to do.

11:51These guys are far too good. But in order to be able to showcase that, you have to have courage to be able to take a step forward instead of taking a step back. Who was the man of the match for you, Robbo? Man of the match. I mean, you could pick anybody really. I mean, Elise, for the first half an hour, was magnificent. When he went past people with ease, he just made it look so easy, didn't he? And he was gliding past, but he was showing good strength as well. And then he came to the fore at the end as well. So I would say he was the outstanding player in terms of every time he got the ball, I thought something was going to happen.

12:22But you could say the same about Carrizvalia. I mean, he went past his defender time and time again. There were so many good things about the game in terms of the attacking side of the game. But going back to one of Craig's points, would one of the teams in the tomorrow semi-final live with either Bayern or PSG? They wouldn't come out and play in the same way because Arsenal would sit back and try and stop them playing. So it wouldn't be quite as entertaining. Would they be able to stop them? it might be more difficult for PSG and Bayern to play through 11 players because that's exactly what Atleti or Arsenal will do in the final.

12:55Frank, who is your player for PSG?

13:01I mean, I like Dembele even if he missed the first chance and I think he did what he had to do. What I like the most on top of his two goals is what he did for Gvalicella on the fourth goal, I think, when he saw exactly where was positioned Valjean. I mean, those players, they play together. They see exactly what they have to do. But it's hard to put a name because they have, as Craig said, you know, during the time, I think Bayern Munich were very good the first 20 minutes. Then as soon as they scored, Paris Saint-Germain came back and saw Paris Saint-Germain players were better. But I have to say, overall, in Paris Saint-Germain, I love Valje Kélia.

13:45I mean, the guy makes differences. He scores important goals and that's why I put him on the first spot. And, of course, Michael Olyse for Bayern Munich. I mean, every time the guy has the ball, he's a danger. Which was the best goal? Oh, my God. Remain me of the goal. I know. That's why I went to Ali. I'm going to say that Luis Diaz goal. Yeah. the recognition of the space, the running behind, as Harry Kane drops into a deeper position, into a playmaking position, that the space is in behind, and then the quality of the ball from Harry Kane, the first touch from Luizzi, I cannot tell you how good of a touch that is at full speed to be able to just now settle yourself down, then face up and have the patience.

14:30You have to have the patience as an attacking player that the defender has now recovered, and you gave him the little, ah. Right. And that little hesitation, that's when Marquinhos can't quite get to it. And then you find the finish. I thought that was outstanding. Don't forget, Frank was talking about Paraskelia. He was out the side a few weeks ago. Somehow. Lost a bit of form and found himself on the bench. I think it was the Liverpool game. It might have been the Liverpool game he'd come off the bench and made a difference. and you know we talked the last Champions League the Real Madrid Champions League game we talked about Alise quite extensively and it just feels I don't want to go on about it but he can't not mention it he's like a peacock isn't he the way he struts around and that's not arrogance it's just supreme self-confidence at the moment when it's not tight he takes the ball in and his first thought is to get at the defender drop a shoulder when it's tight he sort of stands on it and flicks a little pass away from the pressure of two or three players.

15:33He's such a clever player. If you go one-on-one, you're going to probably get done. If you send the cavalry over to help out, he's clever enough to know that and he just pokes a little pass inside and they have an overload. So he really recognises the game very well and I don't think there's a defender out there at the moment that he wouldn't fancy. Because it's not just about pace. Because Nuno Mendes is quick. It's not just pace. It's the fact how he backs you up in the box and then he drops a shoulder or as a step over or whatever it is. And he generally drops a fullback the wrong way. I don't think there's...

16:09We saw Real Madrid get punished badly with him. We've just seen one of the best left-backs struggle with him tonight. There's nobody playing European football at the moment that he won't get the better of over 90 minutes. He's just been absolutely brilliant. And to further that point, I would say... Sorry, Frank. To further that point, I would just say that perhaps the most impressive thing for me about Michael Olisse is that given his personality, you just can't rile him up. You can't get him worked up. So that has to be frustrating for a defender. Why do you tell defenders when players are getting a little cute?

16:43Hey, get stuck in, get your body in, kick him, whatever. He just seems to be like, oh, you're here. You're no longer here. You're gone. I'll take on the next one. And his expression doesn't change. And so as a defender, you know that he's not affected by you. And that, I think, puts you in a position in which you just do not know what to do next. Go on, Frank. Yes, the thing that I want to jump on, Alize, is the fact that before that game, Mendes had to play against Salah. And what we know is that Salah is not the Salah from last season. But before that, Mendes had to play against Yamal, Lamin-Yamal.

17:25and it's crazy to see how easy it was for Mendes to deal with two talented players. But with Olize, that was a different story. That guy has to be put on top of the world right now because he's untouchable. He's unpredictable and that's insane. We can go left to right. His technique is perfect. His pace is amazing and his cleverness is on top of the world again. So what happens now, Robbo? 4-5 in Germany? It's going to be another great game, I'd imagine. It's going to be open. I still see Bayern can get back into the game. We saw that at the end when they scored their two goals and dominated the play.

18:09They had the first 20 minutes as well. I think they were shocked by PSG and the way they played to get back in the game themselves. So I think we're going to see another great game. We're going to see lots of running with the ball. We're going to see it open. We're going to see it from end to end. And it might be down to the goalkeepers. Who makes one or two saves? because they didn't make too many saves today, did they? Let's take a look. How the bookies have it set. You imagine PSG with that one goal advantage, defending champions, of course, favourite. No, no, no. No idea what that means. It means that you can't separate them.

18:38It's exactly the same. I know they're both the same. You separate them. I mean, don't patronise me. I'm just saying. I know it's even Stevens. I mean, what's minus one thing? So it means you've got to put$110 on to win$100. Give me the British one, will you? It's not much American. Yeah, basically it's... Well, the one thing I wouldn't say... The one thing I would say is, and yeah, listen, the game's still alive. There's no doubt about that. Although Bayern Munich played well early on and then late on, and had a couple of chances that they could have done better, at no point did the game look as if it was really getting away from PSG in terms of the scoring.

19:15But it did look as if it was going to get away from Bayern at one point, which I give them credit for clawing it back. but that just tells me there's a bit more devilment and quality. Does it make a difference that company's back on the old sidelines? Obviously, he was in the stands for this. Honestly? I don't know. It was such a great game. I suppose it has to make a small difference, or it has to make some difference, otherwise what the hell's the point of having a head coach in the technical area?

19:53it's just such a I mean I don't PSG for me just because you know Bayern are going to have to just take a couple little risks or a lot of risks and they're so dangerous as were Real Madrid on the counter attack and that's even if they don't dominate the game PSG but Robbo's right in the sense that Alise and Diaz and Kane and all that Bayern have to offer Again, I said when we come into this game, honestly, you wouldn't have been wrong to pick either side or sit on the fence. That's how even Stevens it is or was. And I kind of think we're not far off that from the second leg because of the amount of match winners and game changers that are in both sides.

20:40So I think at the moment for me, a smidge towards PSG. Just a smidge from what I saw tonight and this goal line, but not much at all. Craig's saying definitely PSG? Yeah. Just going back to something that Craig was saying there about it never looked as though it was going to run away from PSG. And in the main, he's absolutely right. There was one moment when Elisa has the chance, 1v1, when he should score, you think he's going to score. That would have made it 2-0. And almost immediately, PSG went up the other end and scored. That was the moment where Bayern could have taken control of the game and the one moment where Elisa didn't play at his best because that was, I thought, quite an easy finish for him.

21:19That was the key point in the game where it just changed into PSG's favour. Craig, wrong there. Ali? Yes. Over the course of the season, Bayern Munich has had two issues. Right. Not many issues, but two issues. Defending set-pieces has been a problem. And when they commit numbers forward, as they do, moments of transition, they tend to be exposed. Now, against most teams in Bundesliga, that doesn't seem to be a problem because Upamecano can handle it. or Jonathan Tah can handle in 1v1 situations. But that is against, most of the time, lesser opposition than a guy like Guzmane Dembele, or Cabarrasquilla, or Due, or whoever it may be.

22:01Those moments of transition are going to be open for PSG once again in Munich. This is the way that Bayern Munich plays. But you don't walk into the Allianz Arena and get a result. Yeah! Super! Bayern Munich are able to come back and they go through the final. Okay, so it's one apiece here. Robbo. I'm going to go for Bayern Munich. I think they will have enough about them in the second leg. I think they won't be quite as exposed on the counter attack. They'll dominate the play. I think they'll go through. Frank. I'm going to go for Paris Saint-Maria because I think even if Dembélé promised to have the same kind of game, I think it's going to be different from Luis Enrique.

22:41I think we're going to rethink defensively. They are one goal up. And so, therefore, I think he's going to be a little bit more conservative, knowing that with his forwards, he can go and counterattack and surprise Bayern Munich. So, I think they're going to be more structured at the back. And, therefore, we'll have a different game. And if they can hold up for 45 minutes, an hour, they can score goals. So therefore, I think I'm going to go for Paris Saint-Germain. That's perfect for you, isn't it? What's that? Well, it's two apiece. Now you can be the big head. Oh! You can be... I said PSG were going to win the tournament in January, so I'll stick with that.

23:24Right. Just a reminder, right? Still a big head. About Champions League on Extra Time. You can check that out. Oh! It was such a nice talk without talking about referees. Oh! You've been talking to the ass Robbo about it. The Bridget... Yeah, what are you saying, Yan Maiev? Robbo? Do I think it's a penalty? No, I don't. I think it's come off his body, onto his arm. I think, yes, it hits his arm and his arm's slightly away. But if it comes off his body first, I personally wouldn't have given a penalty. But the coming off the body, that law changed. I agree, I don't think it's a penalty because of where the arm is.

24:04And it's not that outstretched. but the coming off the body law changed. I know. I'm soaking. We had nine great goals, great conversation. You want to throw a refereeing decision in. Losers for you, you know. Oh, it's just unnecessary. Thrivent believes money is more than numbers. It's a way to care for the people, causes and community you love. Jose Mourinho, according to reports all over Spain, all over the world, in fact, is Florentino Perez's number one target to take over from Arbaloa in the summer. Of course, they've got a great relationship from where Mourinho was in charge in the past and the success that he had at Real Madrid. Things have obviously changed since then. Big talking point because of the support that he's given Presiani, of course, after being suspended for the racial abuse that he gave for Nisius Jr. in the Champions League. A lot to break down here, but I suppose overall, would this be a good decision for Real Madrid on the pitch?

26:18Well, it's not very progressive, is it? in a sense that you have one team playing that's going to win the league, Barcelona, playing an amazingly entertaining style of football that's very progressive, it's very good to watch and it has brought a lot of success. And you've got a Real Madrid side that are the polar opposite. They have not played very entertaining football but for the odd game. and the whole reason of hiring a Xabi Alonso was to try and get out of this lull of the sort of defensive, counter-attacking not wanting to press high up the field type of football that Real Madrid have had success with, certainly that fell away at the end and this just feels like just trying to go back to being organised, because that's all Mourinho will do and it's not the Mourinho of when he went to Real Madrid because he was still sort of in his pomp.

27:18He had been successful at Porto, at Chelsea, at Inter. He was Inter before Real Madrid. Yeah, he just beat Inter. Yeah, and you think, he won the Champions League with Inter. They beat Bayern Munich and it was one of the most defensively boring games I think I've ever seen. But they won. And that's kind of him. But that's not even the same Jose Mourinho anymore. Although Benfica is doing okay. They're going to be in the Champions League and blah, blah, blah. I don't really see this as a very forward-thinking, progressive decision from Florentine. Yeah, it might be a short-term gap, but that's all it is.

27:53So I don't think it's thinking outside the box very well. Will the players listen to him more than they have others? Well, they may. How far that gets you, we'll see as it pertains to Real Madrid. I just think Jose Mourinho is no longer an elite manager in the world. He was. For a long period of time, he was very much at the top of the profession. Since then, there's been a tailspin out of control where he hasn't had an elite job. And the reason as to why he hasn't had an elite job is because he has had mixed success and mixed results wherever he has gone since he has become less than elite. Real Madrid are in need of elite.

28:42Mourinho in name may be so, but as it pertains to results, as of late, that hasn't been the case. This will be interesting. This will be a car crash. This will be the sort of thing that you kind of have to stop and watch because Mourinho himself is interesting. Just the name and what he's going to bring. But in terms of the substance of what he brings to Real Madrid and what's needed from Real Madrid, I think there is a disconnect. And that graphic we just put up just tells you sometimes. And I'm going to give that, that graphic needs a good kicking. Because people look at it and say, Ali was saying he's not the same manager, and I think most people that watch the game would say, yeah, it's fallen away pretty badly from what it was.

29:30And then you look at the win percentages of Fernabache and Benfica, but you look at the countries, Turkey and Portugal, you're going to, that's skewered because Fernabache and Galatasaray and Besiktas and teams that are pulverising most of the other teams in the league are our Benfica and Sporting Club and Porto normally. It is a very it is a very lopsided those two leagues are very lopsided so those win percentages really don't tell a story in terms of you know his managerial career in the last decade or so. Robbo you said when we were talking at Wembley about Real Madrid that this squad is uncoachable could Jose Mourinho prove to be the man who can coach them?

30:12No, because he's no longer a coach. I think he's still playing in the past. The style of football, the tactics, are way back from 10 years ago when he was doing quite well. He hasn't progressed his tactics. I don't think he coaches now so much on the field. He tries, because he can't coach and can't get the best out of teams, what he tries to do is manage the referee, the press. That's all you hear from him, managing the opposition. That's how he manages these days, in the press, in the media and, you know, against the referees and whatever. So it's going to be worse discipline at Real Madrid than has ever been.

30:46And at the moment, they need discipline. You know, they've got three or four players who are all disciplined when they start losing games. Goulair has a tantrum and gets himself sent off. Bellingham has done it in the past. Vinny Junior has done it in the past. We saw Mbappe produce a terrible tackle last season when they were losing the game. All these things have taken place. He's not the man to take them forward. He will actually take them back and make them worse than they are at the moment. And of course, Frank, you've got the Presciani element as well, in that Jose Mourinho has defended his player, who, of course, racially abused Vinicius Junior.

31:18How does that dynamic work on top of everything else that we've discussed? It's going to be very difficult. He will have to have an explanation with Vinicius Junior, for sure. I don't know what he can explain. And I'm with the guys, you know. It's an entertainment to have Jose Mourinho. but in terms of effectiveness, I'm not sure he's going to be able to bring something. I mean, football has changed, has changed, sorry, comparing to the period where he was the top manager in the world. But now the players, they ask for more. They want to feel that you are like a father, and he can be like a father, but he can be a bad father as well, a very strict one.

32:03And players nowadays don't cope with that. They don't know how to do that. And therefore, I think Mourinho's way of thinking the football is from the past. And he's not from the present right now. And we saw that. We saw the graphic. Everybody understands or has understood that, in fact, he was a great coach. but there was a descent towards something normal and not exceptional. And Madrid, I don't know what they're doing. I mean, it's kind of an habit, you know, after Zidane comes back, Celotti comes back, now it's Mourinho comes back. I mean, Mr. Perez having new ideas maybe to structure the club, but I don't think it's going to be a success.

32:50I want to see that because, again, it's an entertainment, but with the player that he has in the dressing room, that's going to be a tough task. Well, if he does take over, he'll be taking over a side. Of course, it'll finish second in La Liga. How dare you? Well, we can all, of course, finish this weekend. Barcelona taking on Osasuna. And now Arsenal take on Atletico Madrid in the other semifinal in the Champions League on Wednesday. Now these two teams met in the group stages.

35:29Arsenal were very much in their pomp at the time. And they destroyed Simeone's side in a second half performance that was excellent from the Premier League team. It would start with Gabriel's header here. Oh, you know this was back in the day when Arsenal was still fun. Yes, indeed. So it's kind of pointless. I was just about to say, there's no relevance to tomorrow's game. Well I'm glad we got replays as well, there we are. Because you could look at and say Atleti have won, well they lost the Copa del Rey final, but they got the cup of river and knocked Barcelona out of the Champions League in the quarter finals.

36:14And Arsenal are just a... It's just not the same team. And it hasn't been for weeks. And they got their three points at the weekend. You're looking at me, you're laughing. Everybody's like, it's Jokers 4-0. I love when we run a highlight in that's extremely irrelevant to tomorrow's game. So, there we go. Is that a Hoffenheim highlight from last week? There you are, Arteta celebrating. Finished 4-0 everybody. There you go. Let's hear from the managers, shall we? Here is Simeone and Arteta ahead of the game.

36:51The fact that Atletico Madrid is playing a Champions League semi-final again after nine years is extraordinary. After playing it four times in 14 years, it's truly wonderful. It's unbelievable. Unbelievable. I believe that this faith, this excitement, this contagious energy that our fans give us will do us a lot of good. We're going to face a tough match against a very good opponent. Well, after that win, a massive win for us against Newcastle. You could sense straight away the energy, the confidence coming into this game. It's a massive privilege to be here again two years in a row in the semifinal of the Champions League representing our club and yeah what an opportunity we're gonna grab it with both hands you're gonna see a team that wants to be dominant that wants to win it and they wants to start to decide a tie tomorrow yeah I've not seen a team I'm not seeing an Arsenal team that wants to be dominant for quite some time I mean I don't see did you see the Arsenal game at the weekend absolutely we didn't see it because it was on at the same time as the semi-final, but apparently it was, I mean, it was three points, which is what they needed this time of the season, but it was the same as.

38:06Yep. It was terrible. Were they dominant, Ali? Slightly dominant, but I think it's more of a reflection on Newcastle, but we digress. Yes, indeed.

38:19Go on, Dan. Anybody got a 5-4? I want to see predictions, please, because I'd like to see if anyone's got this as being, as anywhere near as entertaining as we saw today. Xhaka and Frank have got three goals and then everyone else is going for a draw. Frank, you think Atleti are going to advance over the two legs? Why? They lost 4-0, don't forget that. Look, we just showed it. Yeah, that's not the same time. That's not the same competition. It's the semi-final of the Champions League. I don't know. I want to believe that Tético can surprise everybody and go to that final. I don't think it would be a bit...

38:56I don't think it would be a big surprise, Frank. I don't think we'd be sat here going, wow, can you imagine? Well, because sometimes ago, like a month ago or two months ago, everybody agreed to put Arsenal as one of the contenders, which may be Bayern Munich. But things have changed and their football is not that effective. They had lots of doubts and their results and the way they play, as Craig and Ali said they're not dominant at all anymore so therefore I want to believe that Atletico again can surprise and put the selling to the final and put Arsenal out of the competition which you know wouldn't be a surprise anymore so yeah I put Arsenal Atletico winning that first leg and going through.

39:43Robbo sell this game to me. Oh boy Oh sell the game to you well that's a difficult thing to do because how can I sell the game to you um you hope that Atleti play on the front foot you hope that the the players in the front areas Alvarez makes the right sort of runs Griezmann might find the right pass they'll get saw a lot on at some point and crosses are coming to the box and he might win balls in the air and they try and press high up the field against an Arsenal side that at the moment don't want to don't want to have possession too much because they're not very good in possession that don't get the ball forward that quickly.

40:17But Arsenal are quite good defensively. So I can't sell you the game, Dan. I did the two sporting Lisbon games. They were absolutely terrible. And every Arsenal game I've seen in recent weeks hasn't been particularly good. OK, wrong person. Wrong person. They will still get a win. They've got to have... Well, what I say is, Arsenal, Rob was right. They are defensively. Certainly, if we take the Barcelona, Copa del Rey game in particular. Yeah. Another big game for Atleti, as Arsenal are. Two different teams, how they go about it, two different defences. But I think Arsenal have to be really careful here in a sense that if there is the Atleti on the front foot that we see now and again, and they can get Griezmann into very good positions, and Zubimendi, Rice, they're not alive and alert to it, and all of a sudden you've got him getting turned, and there's been few players in that position, that certain number 10 position in the last two or three months that have been in better form.

41:20And they took Barcelona apart in the first half of that game. Now, that is unlikely with Arsenal defence, but not impossible. But it kind of depends what mood Atleti are in, because we have seen that. And so I think there has to be some trepidation from Arsenal that this can be Atleti. This can be a dangerous side when it wants to be. But it also isn't the old, stout, solid defensive Atleti that it used to be. They can equally be pretty weak at the back. Over the last 14 years that Diego Simeone referenced in the press conference, we have thought of Atletico Madrid as grinding, fighting, pushing, shoving, fouling, doing whatever was necessary to win matches.

42:07That sounds a lot like the current version of Arsenal. Arsenal are looking more like old school Atletico Madrid than Atletico Madrid themselves. And that's why I think it's a draw tomorrow and eventually Arsenal win it because Arsenal can be better right now, currently at being Atletico Madrid or the old version of Atletico Madrid. It won't be pretty. I don't know that I'm going to sell it to you, Dan. I don't think this game sells itself. All I'm going to say is that there will be a lot of grinding, a lot of pushing, a lot of shoving, a lot of fouling, and that's going to come mostly from Arsenal, and surprisingly, not Atletico Madrid.

42:47When we came in the studio just before we came on air, Robbo was wondering one of three moods that I was in today. Oh, yes. I don't know why he was doing that. It was Golf Club Craig, Wembley Craig, or Connecticut. See, I don't know. Golf club Craig is great. I don't know. You should have seen him at Wembley, Craig. Oh, my God. Better than golf club Craig? It was on the par. Oh, wow. Do you like that? On the par? Yeah, yeah. In what sense? Well, you're very friendly, chatty, gregecious, happy. Pretty much opposite. Standard. However, this is a prior warning. Yes, yeah. Tomorrow's game could change things greatly.

43:25Well, I could take it down. I didn't know there was a D option. I mean, from the start. The good thing is we've set the bar so low that if anything good happens, we'll be impressed and surprised. And if it doesn't, we'll check your local lessons for Thursday. Can't wait till tomorrow. What you got plans in the morning? Yes. What are you doing? I've got a little. Feel sure to stay tuned. Robert and Frank are with us to answer your questions on Extra Time, which is coming up next.

45:18Welcome in to the latest edition of Extra Time. Despite the grumps that we have on today's panel everyone agreed that it was a fantastic match between PSG and Bayern Munich. Put a name on that, who are the Grumps? Craig Burley, Stuart Robson. Okay, okay. Bad defending or amazing attacking football, Frank? Great attacking of course. I wouldn't say poor defending, it was so difficult again to defend against all those talented players that the defenders, they tried their best and it was impossible to cope with those. But you know what? I enjoyed the game, but I didn't talk about the penalties where I think both penalties were good.

46:01There's a question coming up about penalties and they've snuck in here. So don't worry. Let's talk about the officials. I disagree with that. I told you. That he was going to do it. Well, we knew it was coming. Every time he sends a text message to any producer. Yeah, it's frankly complaining about it. It must be an automatic electric shock. Yeah, we will talk about that in a minute, I promise. If you're a defender in the Bayern PSG match, what would be your takeaway from today's match? And how do you keep your confidence up for the second leg, Robbo? You'd like to make better decisions, you'd like to have a bit more cover.

46:42You know, if you think about the Karatskalija goal, the first one, when he gets played in behind. Stanisic sort of got back into a good position then the second the first centre-half doesn't come out which I think was over Meccano to get a block in so you need to double up on occasions against the wide players and defend better as a team but you don't really want to see that happen do you? You want to see the game played as it was with great attacking qualities. The thing is it's against both of this team's personalities to put numbers behind the ball. It's not who they are. And so to try to be something that you're not at this stage of the competition, it goes against what makes you a good team to begin with.

47:24So what could help some of these defenders? Well, you put a lot more numbers around the ball and a lot numbers behind the ball, but that limits you from being able to get out in the attack and explore the abilities that you have in wide areas that you have down the middle. You have all this attacking talent, then play to your strength and both of the teams play to their strengths very well today. Criac, Criac, whoever that is. Criac. Why does the Highline attack first style of football where the idea is simply to outscore your opponents, work so well for Bayern and PSG but often seems less effective for Barcelona?

48:00They don't play the same. Right. No, they play. doesn't work as well for who? Barcelona. PSG. Barcelona. Yeah. PSG and Bayern, they're saying it works in the high level. No, they don't play. They squeeze the game, but they still give themselves a little bit of depth when they have to. The centre-halves give themselves a little bit of depth when they need to, but Barcelona don't. Right? Theirs is just, they're coming up, come hell or high water. They're coming up, they're squeezing it. You very rarely see Barcelona, in fact, I don't think I've ever seen them, where the defenders are coming up, realise there's absolutely no pressure on the ball and there's a runner and one of them drops off.

48:46They just keep coming. That's what they do. So they want to squeeze the game that way, and that allows them to get pressure higher up the field, to win the ball back higher up, but it leaves a lot of space to be exposed. Those two teams don't. If you watched both centre-halves today on each side, at times when the full-backs were pushed on, they dropped off a little bit and gave themselves some depth so it's it's it's not even close to being the same okay frank here we go ready what did you all think of the officiating today was that a penalty kick on davies rule book says otherwise why is that why is the rule book well the rule books that's somebody that's probably thinking because it's sorry frank it came off the hip yes which is not in the laws of the game anymore right frank yeah it's not it's Not anymore, but I think we are talking about the natural position of the player.

49:39And I think he was in a natural position. That's absolutely normal to have your arms on the side and not your arms behind your back, which is a complete abnormal positioning. So I think it shouldn't have been a penalty. You later said it was abnormal, Frank. But on the first... Well, that was a UEFA referee. That was abnormal. No, that's, yeah, but is it normal to have your hands, your arms behind your back when you play football? No, it's not a normal position. So you can discuss whatever you want. But so for me, in my opinion, as Ali would say, it's 100 % no penalty. Right. But on the first penalty on Luis Diaz, I want to talk about it as well.

50:19I think, and Ali alluded it, finding an excuse to Luis Diaz saying that he was driving the ball. is why he tackled Paco. Because that's what it is. He tackled Paco. We can, I don't know if you're going to see it because it's not the same show. No, we haven't the right to. The one, the one who started the contact, he initiated the contract was with Diaz, tackling Paco. I'm sorry. So, therefore, no penalty as well. Robert, do you agree with Frank that it shouldn't have been a penalty? No, I don't agree with Frank entirely, but I understand why he's saying it. because Luis Dier wasn't going towards the ball.

50:59He actually put his foot across the challenge. So you can either say he was shielding the ball or he was tackling. That's a subjective view. On this occasion, I would have given a penalty. It's a bit like the one in the previous game against PSG, I think it was McAllister, when McAllister tried to put his foot across and I think it was Pacho who tried to make the challenge again. It was exactly the same sort of situation, but on that occasion, the penalty wasn't given because Pacho didn't go to ground. The difference was today, he slid in. And that's what the referee and the VAR saw. And they think he makes the contact.

51:31So you said UEFA said it was none. Who is UEFA? Alexander Seferin? I don't know. He's a referee. Head of UEFA. I've been sent a quote from the UEFA officials. What do they know? I don't know. Don't blame the message. I hate referees in this situation. I just want to talk about a brilliant game. There's a shock that a UEFA representative, probably somebody who's never even played the game, never even, never mind refereed the game, putting out some sort of quote about natural positions. I mean, I think it was very harsh, to be honest. Can I just say, very quickly, when Frank is talking about the arms behind your body, it's hard enough to defend players like Due, Cabrasquilla, Dembele, whoever, yes, whoever, pick a player from either team in the attacking half.

52:17It's hard enough to defend against these players when you're actually running at full speed and you're utilizing the momentum of your arms. This is basic running motion. Sure. When you now go and do this, how do you get out of in and out of your breaks quickly? You can't. You can't. It slows you down as a defender. But now defenders are forced to be in this sort of position because of how gray area this handball rule and law has become. Ali alluded to this actually in the show. For those saying PSG against Bayern should be the final, isn't actually better as a two-legged semi-final tie as it is, especially knowing how tight and tense most finals tend to be.

52:56Thoughts? Well, yes, but that could be slightly negated by the 180 minutes we're going to watch from the teams playing tomorrow. You've got a couple of questions on that. Frank, as exhilarating as today's match was, are you afraid tomorrow will be the polar opposite? Yes, I am. and because of the coach's mindset, it will be different. I think they're more thinking about how to defend well, where the two teams that we saw today were thinking about attacking and only attacking. And therefore, yes, it's going to be a different game. It can be interesting if you love football and if you love tactics.

53:39But yes, in terms of goals, in terms of talent, in terms of pace, it can be very boring. Can I just give a shout out to our late friend Paul Mariner? Yes. When he did the New England Revolution games, when the games were boring as they possibly could be, he would say, it's a fascinating tactical battle. No, Maris. Maris didn't believe that. He just knew he wanted to get paid. Okay, final question. Would Atletico Madrid against Arsenal be capable of a 5-4 scoreline over five legs? I think that sums it up quite nicely. Thank you very much. Thank you, Robbo. Thank you, Frank. We'll be back tomorrow, of course, to reflect on Arsenal against Atleti.

54:21As I say, we've set the bar so low. Anything half decent. Any other games on tomorrow? Any football league games we could watch? Maybe. We saw him come, I don't know, the Saudi league. Do you watch it at home then? Come in later? Come in, but late. No, watch the game and then drive in. We'd have to be late for the show. Yes, we can be late for the show. That's fine. Well, that's the boss.
