0:00Jurgen Klinsmann:When you want your spring break to feel like... And your kid's pool day to feel like... And your hotel bed to feel like... Ooh, and room service to feel like... Because at Hilton, hospitality feels like...

0:19ESPN FC Crew:Your cabana's ready. Would you like fresh towels?

0:21Jurgen Klinsmann:It matters where you stay. Book now at Hilton.com. Hilton. For this day.

0:34ESPN FC Crew:Welcome in to the latest edition of ESPN FC. I'm Dan Thomas, joined by Craig Burley and Xhaka Hislop. We'll kick things off at the Carabao Cup. We're at the semi-final stages. Second leg, Manchester City taking on Newcastle. City, of course, with a 2-0 lead going into this tie at the Etihad. And it was soon pretty much over as a contest as Mamouche would make it 3-0. Two more goals to City. Newcastle would get one back. Great individual goal, actually, from Elanga. Eddie Howell's team's had a lot of chances, actually. but in the end, Manchester City advance convincingly 5-1 on aggregate. Welcome in, watching that for us as well, Frank Leboeuf and Jürgen Klinsmann.

1:08It's weird this, you know, because comfortably City into the final,

1:14ESPN FC Crew:and hopefully the final's better than the two semi-finals. The two semi-finals weren't really much of a contest. Yesterday was a bit of a bore. OK, it was tight, but it wasn't a great game. This is a difficult one because I don't know what side of the fence I want to sit on here, whether City switched off in the second half or Newcastle played really well in the second half because they did make changes, but they were chasing the game. And they could have had, and City could have had a couple more as well, but I'm not lying here if I said Newcastle could have had four or five easy. Visser had two when he came on at halftime.

1:50ESPN FC Crew:The first one he shanked very early in the second half. There was a chance in the first half before you mentioned it. There were two chances in the first half that were brilliant chances to make the game 2-1. So it was a strange one. City will be happy. Newcastle clearly will not. They're the holders of this competition or were. But Newcastle created a lot of chances because that's what City do. They give you that opportunity. But ultimately, they've won the game. And I think you might say they switched off a little bit, brought some youngsters on. And Newcastle were throwing darts at a ball to try and get back in the game.

2:25ESPN FC Crew:When we were watching this game, even at 2-0, Craig said, you know, Newcastle aren't out of this just yet. The third goal, I think, killed it effectively as a contest. But that's just who Manchester City have been of late. That even with a two-goal lead on the night, four-goal aggregate, they will still give you chances. And that's what they did. Newcastle let themselves down and they got those chances, but weren't able to convert. So often we've said it's Donnarumma, who's been Manchester City's saviour. This time it was Trafford, particularly in the first half, and poor finishing, as I mentioned, from Newcastle.

3:01ESPN FC Crew:From a Newcastle perspective, and I mentioned during the highlight, I was really disappointed with how easily Manchester City were able to carve open opportunities, just kind of run through Newcastle's midfield. A couple of bigger missions in Gamarison and Joe Linton. That aside, it was just way too easy for a top-level side to be carved open we dominated in midfield as Newcastle were on the night. And that, for me, was the most disappointing aspect of this. Over both legs, really. Jürgen, it's all about you take your chances, you win the game.

3:36Jurgen Klinsmann:Yeah, absolutely. I mean, already the fact that they play two legs in the Carabouac Cup, for me, is wrong. Because all the amount of games they have in England, they should have clear knockout games, just one game only. But the fact that they go there, Newcastle, and they have actually so many opportunities, as Greg said. I think there's just a lack, a psychological lack within them saying, OK, maybe if we create chances and get opportunities, we're not going to turn this thing around, you know, after obviously the 1-0 so early in the game. I think they keep playing, keep playing, they're creating and creating chances, but they're not really convinced that they can convert those chances and score three or four goals in Manchester.

4:25Jurgen Klinsmann:So, yeah, they deserve to lose.

4:28ESPN FC Crew:Yeah, I think that's... There you are, Shaq. Take that, Mayor of Newcastle. Sugarcoating that. Jürgen, just out of interest, what do you say if you're Eddie out at half-time, 5-0 down on aggregate? What is there to say to the players? Go home. Yeah. Frank said that many a time in the theatre. That's what he hears every night on his show.

4:52Jurgen Klinsmann:Yeah, obviously, you know, you tell them, listen, you know, even if you're down now five goals, I mean, you created so many chances. You could easily score two, three, four, because maybe they lose a bit of concentration as well, Man City. And so you tell your players, hey, come on, we've got to get out here with the heads up, and we cannot just, you know, give away, you know, score so easily. So you try to kind of motivate them and sharpen them up a little bit. But obviously, you know as well as a manager that this thing is done. So the best thing would be, come on, let's go to the pub instead of playing the second half.

5:31ESPN FC Crew:We've been discussing Manchester City and their frailties of late, Jürgen. And obviously Pep Guardiola has been there a long time and been very successful. But you just feel now there isn't quite the same spark that we've seen of Manchester City teams in the past. How much is that down to the personnel? now and how much is that down to them not that pep not being able to get the most out of them

5:53Jurgen Klinsmann:well i think you know you go through those periods uh every year i mean uh even in the years where you maybe you're up you know five pounds in the league table and and everything goes well in the champions league and and so forth but there are always these periods where the energy is maybe a bit lower than than usual than it should be but you have to kind of you know pick those periods wisely, I would say, if you can. Because now in the end of January, beginning of February, that's the perfect time to kind of give things a little bit away. Like today, they gave a lot of chances to Newcastle. They could have scored a couple of goals.

6:30Jurgen Klinsmann:So you might want to take those moments right now. But once Crunch Time comes on in March and April, when the Champions League matters really with the knockout phase, and obviously the Premier League will go into the final run, that's when you want to be turned on and I think yeah, Beb Guardiola went through those periods so many times in his manager career that he knows that maybe it's not the worst thing right now to have a little bit of a low energy moment but then hopefully in a couple of weeks from now we see a different phase of Man City.

7:02ESPN FC Crew:They've won the Champions League once with a much better defence, much, much better and And they didn't win it on three or four occasions when they were the favourites with a much stronger team. With a much stronger defence. Not a goalkeeper per se, although who was the goalkeeper? Edison. He was a good goalkeeper, but Donnarumma's really first class. But the rest of it is very shaky. And even though they're in the final, we should be sort of positive about that. And it should be a great game, blah, blah, blah. I don't think whilst there's been some murmurings this week about the City spend, the City squad, and he's sort of chipped in a little bit, I don't, whilst I think there is something in that I think it's the fact that he looks down to North London and he looks at what they have done and I think that's what sort of frustrates him, that's because he knows, I think deep down barring a disaster, that they have, I'm not saying they have the best team in Europe but you could argue they have the best squad in Europe.

8:06ESPN FC Crew:Arsenal, that is. And he knows that's the team he's gone up against previously. It was Liverpool who took the title off them. Arsenal have been in the hunt with them in the last two or three years, but they weren't quite strong enough. This year they are, and I think as much as he looks at his team and thinks, yeah, I've got some youngsters there, and obviously Diaz is out injured, and Gvardiol's out injured, and Akanji's been out on, he's away on loan, and all these things, that will frustrate him, some of the decisions, but I do think the one that probably frustrates them the most is the business that Arsenal have done and the position that they find themselves in, which is way, way stronger to go all the way in all these competitions than Manchester City.

8:49ESPN FC Crew:Of course, it's no coincidence that Manchester City's poor run of form has coincided with the fact that Erling Haaland's on his worst run, probably of his career, when you take a look at his numbers, especially when you compare him to the start of the season where he came flying out the block obviously. 25 goals in his opening 23 games, two goals in his last 12. Yeah but one second here before we go to all the guys. What have we just walked into today? What are you talking about? Well I know I just went on a little bit about Arsenal squad and that is true but they've just got to your cup final yep yeah they have and they've there and that's it we've mentioned that and now I want to talk about other things I know what we to do dance on the table do some juggling to celebrate thank you I don't I think there is a little I think there is time to dance on the grave well I'm not dancing on their grave we're celebrating there through to the final right I don't know we're going to talk about Ellen Hall and who's just who was on the bench today, came on and had a great chance and it was a great save.

9:56ESPN FC Crew:Yes. And I'm a little confused where we're going here. OK, I'll tell you where we're going. Jürgen, you were a fine striker, one of the best in the world at the time. Erling Haaland is having one of the roughest runs that he's had in his career. I'm intrigued psychologically. What's that like when everything was so easy for you, where all you had to do was look at the ball and end up in the back of the net, to now you feel everything you do is hard work, you've got to overthink everything, and nothing comes as naturally as it has in the past for this youngster, who, of course, there's no doubt about his talent.

10:25ESPN FC Crew:But at the moment, you just feel he's kind of hit his first obstacle.

10:31Jurgen Klinsmann:I don't think it's his first one, but he went through a couple of moments like that for a few weeks, you know, in different moments already. I mean, obviously, there's a logic to it. When you don't score as a striker, you go back on the training field and you work hard and you wait for the moment when you put in the next one. Overall, you know, he started, as you said, he started very, very strong this season. And he scored already enough goals, you know, where other strikers would be happy for the entire season to score that amount, which is now there in a halfway break. I mean, Ellen will come back.

11:04Jurgen Klinsmann:He will kind of go through these moments. And obviously, we have a World Cup also waiting for him with his Norway team, which hasn't been qualified for a long time for a World Cup. But I think, you know, there might be, as I said before, the overall performance, you know, when you choose their bad moments, bad periods. Maybe now is a good time to choose that period right now, you know, in January, February. But when it's crunch time, you know, Erwin Hannard will be there and he will score the goals. And maybe already in the Carrefour final against Arsenal, you know, he will be on the score sheet.

11:36Jurgen Klinsmann:But I'm not worried about him because he's a personality. he's a professional that when he goes to tough moments he knows what to do you know he goes back to the training field and he works his butt off that's what he's going to do and he will come out even stronger as usual

11:53ESPN FC Crew:well he's the least of their problems isn't he we're not going to talk about the fullbacks again I was just moving I know what you're saying by the way Frank's mic broken I just don't want to go to Frank at the moment I've got you interrupting enough I don't need him involved No, but you're right. He's gone off the boil slightly by his standard. And I'm not going to go on about the full-backs and the other positions, but he is. When Guardiola puts a sheet down of problems in front of him, what he needs to solve, Erling Haaland is not one of them. He is. Surely he is. What? A problem. Erling Haaland?

12:32ESPN FC Crew:Erling Haaland is not a problem. Why is he a problem? Don't be so stupid. They would have won against Spurs if he scored. Is that not a problem? They were the one against Spurs if decisions had gone their way. But he's got to take his chances, which he hasn't been doing, and that has affected their Leeds plays. And therefore, Haaland is a talking point. It is a problem. Full-backs are a problem. Midfield are a problem. Yes, yes. But also, my striker isn't scoring chances. He's not getting many, but he's not scoring the chances that he used to. And you can't. Well, but my point is, is that will be short-lived.

13:05ESPN FC Crew:He's too good a player, and he's proven to be too good a player. and I don't think he gives his stuff if this show or any newspaper or any journalist asks him about his goal-scoring drought, if we want to call it that, because next game he'll just go out there, batter a couple of defenders around and score. But he hasn't done that. That's the issue, isn't it? Well, he's done it over his career and he's proven he'll come back. The problem is when he's not doing it, the rest of the team is not strong enough. And when you have a striker, and I'm sure Jürgen's gone through this, when you have a striker that's having a bit of a dry patch, you need the rest of the team to chip in and do their job.

13:42ESPN FC Crew:And that is the issue at City. They are too reliant on these guys up front to bash in three or four goals every game. I get it. He's not quite as sharp as he was. My point is, that will not last. That won't last. Trust me. I don't know, it might be this weekend, it might be next week, whatever it was, but he's the least of the problems when Pip Guardiola is having a sleepless night. Frank, welcome to the show. Did you want to say something or should we move on?

14:10Jurgen Klinsmann:No, I just say go home. I'm already in, so that's fine. But I'm going to say something. You know what? I'm a little bit with Craig in a way that it's true that the guy has been nicknamed a cyborg because he doesn't seem to be human, scoring goals after goals. And suddenly because he doesn't, oh, we have a problem. No, the prime is elsewhere, for sure, or the position. But it's true that when you see him, like we saw the highlight where he doesn't score that goal against Spurs, you can wonder what's going wrong. But he's been so good for like six months with Manchester City and Norway that he's allowed to have some rest a little bit, I would say, or some down moment.

14:59Jurgen Klinsmann:And he's going to be back. He has a World Cup, as Jürgen said. He's going to finish the Champions League as well and the Premier League, and he's going to be back very soon. It's true that you need him at crucial moments, but you always need him. That's the main concern that they have. It seems to be that if he's not good, City is not able to win. That's the main concern that Pep Gordola has, I think. If you're ready for an oil change, trust the professional parts people at O 'Reilly Auto Parts to recommend the best products for your vehicle. They, of course, advanced yesterday, winning 1-0 against Chelsea, but really it was done just in the first leg, wasn't it?

16:34ESPN FC Crew:Chelsea came out, they tried, but how hard, really, did they have a go at Arsenal? That was a frustrating thing from some Chelsea fans. Liam Rossini, happy. Not many teams come here and put on the level of performance that we have tonight. Frank, what do you make of that?

16:52Jurgen Klinsmann:Well, it's a positive post-conference comment, and we all know that and we have seen that for years, especially nowadays. It's true that, especially the second half, Chelsea had many, many chances to score goals and maybe create a surprise, because I think it would have been a surprise. But at the end of the day, you know, I think they would have done better. They should have done better. Enzo Fernandes, instead of shooting above the net, could have been more precise. And that's what you need at that moment that a world champion, you know, doing what we expect from him. And we know that Enzo Fernandes is capable of doing that.

17:33Jurgen Klinsmann:I think he can be happy with the way that the Cavalry done playing and try to threat Arsenal. But we saw Liverpool, I think it was Liverpool not such a long time ago, being better than Arsenal in the second half, like Chelsea were. so nothing surprising for me. I think he must be frustrated but it's true that he has to get the positive side of the game and that was the policy side. His team never gave up.

18:04ESPN FC Crew:I don't remember those chances. No, I don't know what Frank's talking about. I remember a couple of shots from outside the box, the free kick at the end, some corners. I see a side that played five at the back. I see a side that played Liam De Lape on the right wing to try and thwart Arsenal on that side and have that physicality for diagonal balls. And I saw an Arsenal side that didn't really have to get out of first or second gear because they were the team that was in charge. It always felt that Arsenal were in control of the game. It felt that Arsenal knew they had a goal leading the tie and it felt if Arsenal needed to up the speed and up the tempo, they could.

18:46ESPN FC Crew:And the big question was on Chelsea to go in there and I get it keeping it tight for 45 minutes but then you've got to go for it, you've got to try and unleash and put some pressure on because it's go to Wembley or go home and they didn't do that and Man Utd have been there and played better Liverpool have been there and played better there have been others so these are just words from Liam Rossini and I think he tries to sort of baffle people sometimes and that's pretty obvious early in this tenure at Chelsea with his rhetoric but I thought it was a pretty pedestrian performance bearing in mind they were behind in the tie and I always felt Arsenal if they needed a kick up the backside to go on and win the game properly they could have done it.

19:33ESPN FC Crew:It's knockout football shank. Craig said like 45 minutes, okay, fair enough. Second half, you've got to go for it. You've got to try and create some clear-cut chances. Even if you lose 3-0, at least you're trying. To Liam Rossignor's point, good performance if you come into that leading 2-0. And you set up shop and not many can deny Arsenal certainly for what? 93 minutes or whatever it was. And so you take that for what it is. But given the fact that you're down, a goal, you need one to get yourself back in it, albeit you're at the Emirates. I thought you saw Manchester United do a job in Arsenal a few weeks ago.

20:08ESPN FC Crew:Listen, Arsenal responded wonderfully well since then. But Arsenal, Well, Manchester United were able to hurt them on the counter-attack. At times, they pressed higher up the park. But never you got that feeling from Chelsea, that there was a strategy around how we're going to get a goal or two or how we're going to respond. Or, to Craig's point, when it was, let's just keep it tight, keep ourselves in the game. We've got a couple up front in João Pedran and De Lapp, and hopefully a mistake will come. Well, anybody who's seen Arsenal play, saying he defensively, mistakes are few and far between.

20:41ESPN FC Crew:so the game just kind of petered out as you would expect. But there was never that change of approach, or certainly not early enough, from Chelsea. And that, for me, was a disappointing thing. Because, yes, it's two legs, you're down a goal, you need something to happen. You don't want to go gung-ho from the opening whistle. Arsenal will hurt you. But at some point, you've got to throw some caution to the wind, and I don't feel that ever came. Chelsea gave Arsenal the game that Arsenal wanted. A kind of dull, slow, lacking ambition for the most part type of a second leg of a semi-final. That was the game that Arsenal wanted.

21:21They didn't want Chelsea to come out and play this high energy pressing and try and swarm all over them.

21:29ESPN FC Crew:Because that would have meant they would have had to have worked harder. They would have had to have played that kind of game. And they wanted to play a control game, which ultimately they could. And then Havertz comes on and one or two others. and Chelsea are starting to get his desperation times and then they get the winner. So they just, look, let's be frank about it. It wasn't a very good, the first leg was pretty good. The second leg was pretty dire and Chelsea got what they deserve, which is not to go to the final. Was this a psychological thing from Rosinha slightly, Jürgen? In the sense that, look, we'll go there, but we want to be able to leave with our heads held high, even if we lose.

22:07Jurgen Klinsmann:It might be, might be then. But I think, you know, these cup games, they're different. They're different to the normal league games. And when you have a situation like that, you go into the second leg, you have to go down. As you guys say, rightfully say, you need to have urgency from the first minute on and not just maybe the last 15, 20 minutes when you run out of time and you desperately need this goal. And that was lacking throughout the entire game. I think, you know, when you see certain cup competitions, you know, They've played in Germany, they've played in Italy now, and obviously in England.

22:41Jurgen Klinsmann:Some teams do not recognize the urgency that really captives requests. You know, there's no other game behind that, after that game. If you lose that game, you're out, you're out, you're done. You cannot correct it on an upcoming weekend, like in a league game. And there you see some performances from certain teams all over Europe, where this urgency is not there, and they then, rightfully so, leave the competition.

23:09ESPN FC Crew:Do you think, Frank, that comes from a senior? Do you think he's thinking, look, I've got a good run, I've won six out of seven, I don't want to get arsehole, try, but leave myself open and get spanked 5-0, because that's going to take away some of the love that I've been getting.

23:22Jurgen Klinsmann:Maybe, but because it's realistic. It has to be realistic, you know. If you open up, you get the urgency that everybody's talking about, and you go for it, you're going to be smashed. He hasn't got the individuals to make it work in that way, because at the back, he's not ready for that, especially against an opposition with Saka and some others. But Manchester United did it, Frank.

23:44ESPN FC Crew:Manchester United did it with a weaker side, arguably, than Chelsea put out yesterday. So why are you going there with a handbrake on? Why aren't you pushing Arsenal, trying to go for it? Because if you go as the way you suggest and he did, then you're out. You're out whatever you do, but at least go for it. At least try.

23:59Jurgen Klinsmann:No, but you're going to explain that. It's different than the Premier League. It's a League Cup game and it's different. You have one down. And Arsenal, they knew that, and they were expecting Chelsea to come. They didn't want to come because they knew that it would be smashed back. They could have scored a second goal, because I don't agree with the guys. There are four or five chances. Yeah, it's not clear chances, and I was naming Enzo Fernandes because he kicked the ball twice above the bar, the crossbar, and he would have been more precise. Maybe it would have been different. One nil would have made Arsenal wandering a little bit more without being, like you said, offensive and urgent in their manners.

24:39Jurgen Klinsmann:So you have to be tactically according to your strength. And the strength of Chelsea is for sure not going like crazy because at the back they're not ready for that.

24:52ESPN FC Crew:If you walk away from a semi-final and you haven't got to Wembley or whatever it is, whatever the final is in whatever country, if you walk away and think we've left everything out there, We just weren't good enough. I think as a player, you're okay with that. Even as a manager, maybe even as a fan. But when you walk away and say, you know, we didn't really go for that today. We were a little coy. We were a little cautious or a lot cautious. And we've left a lot in the locker room. And I think as a player, that's the last thing you want to do. If I was playing in that game, I'd rather have lost 3-0.

25:32ESPN FC Crew:Right, really? And had peppered the goal. Right. And had peppered, you know, who was in goal for Kepa. Yeah. I would rather have peppered his goal. And it just wasn't our night. And we didn't get to the final. But we've gone to Arsenal. We've had a bash. But they didn't do that. They went there. They were cautious. They tried to do it. They tried to nick the old 1-0. Probably take the game a little bit longer. Get the crowd restless. But it didn't work. It just didn't work. And these tactics are fine when it works. And when it doesn't, I think you open yourself up for a little bit of criticism.

26:02ESPN FC Crew:go there throw the kitchen sink at it and then you can look yourself in the mirror at the end of it Dan and say well just not quite good enough against Arsenal but we gave it a roll, Chelsea didn't do that Speaking of tactics What? Do you know where we're going now? I have no idea Loads of people messaged me, thank you so much I love that Yes, the corner Yes, there it is What was interesting? So they left three players up for the corner which is something you've been suggesting teams should do against Arsenal This is not new. This is not innovative. This is just a tactic to try and offset a team that are superb at set pieces and also they are flooding the six-yard box.

26:43ESPN FC Crew:And it's making life very difficult for the goalkeepers of this world to come out and get a clean punch because they ultimately end up being about 10 or 12 bodies around the keeper. But what was interesting, the way Chelsea did it yesterday, was not just leave three up as soon as the corner was taken, was wait till the corner was about to be taken and then three or four players sprinted forward. Right. And what that did... It's like your version 2.0. Yeah. Well, I think what that is trying to do is catch the opponents unawares. OK. So they've got less time to think about what players they're going to put back.

27:22ESPN FC Crew:And they did that, and I think they may have only done it once, but I noticed that they did it and I was saying, please don't score.

27:34ESPN FC Crew:That would have been the whole show. But it's interesting because Robert Sanchez still was under some amount of pressure from the ball that came in and I think it was Gabriel was still trying to block him but there was less players and more space to operate. So yeah, I was actually quite pleased to see that. Jürgen, this is all about obviously trying to ease the congestion in the box for set pieces.

28:00Jurgen Klinsmann:Yeah, absolutely. And I love that. I mean, I've done that quite some time with my teams. And it's a bit about confidence. You want to signal the opponent, hey, whatever you do, you can fill the six-yard box now with all the guys you have. We leave people out there and we're right at you. And no, it's a little bit of a mental game that you play with each other. And yeah, if it works, fantastic. If it doesn't work, then you will get to blame.

28:29ESPN FC Crew:We're playing Craig. It'll be like my birthday. Lots of people were saying to me on social media, all these experts, guys that are sitting in the bedroom, never played again. Well, Arsenal will just do this and they'll just do that. They haven't got a clue. They haven't got a scooby-doo, right? And here's the deal. Normally they're sat in their underwear. Are they in their underwear again? That's where I was last week, apparently. Probably. Here's the deal. Yes, leaving three players up or whatever it is may not have the effect that you want. Arsenal may still score. Probably will at some point.

29:04ESPN FC Crew:But you can't just keep doing what you're doing as opposing teams. And we sit here every week and watch Arsenal do pretty much the same thing to teams. And it's usually Gabriel. And it's usually a ball around to the back post. And there's usually a lot of blocking. You can't keep turning up and telling me, certainly against Arsenal, that getting everybody behind the ball is the right tactic. It's not working. So when it's not working, you've got to do something different. And against an opponent like that, that is utilising this tool set, this skill set, to get themselves goals, you have to make them think you've got to do something different.

29:39ESPN FC Crew:I'm not saying do this and this is the greatest thing in the world and this will stop them. It might not. But what teams are doing at the moment isn't having the effect that they want either. Let's focus on Arsenal a little bit, Jürgen. It's interesting for the first time this season now, Arteta's got to make a choice about who he plays up front because obviously he's now got a fit Jesus, he's got a fit Havertz and he's got a fit Xhorker. And he's got a Xhorker, of course, who hasn't made the impact that everyone was expecting, well, most were expecting when he made that move in the summer. Is that going to come a point?

30:12ESPN FC Crew:And I think we've seen actually in a couple of games already this season where the likes of Jesus is preferred to Xhorker because Arteta has got more confidence in those players ahead of the striker.

30:25Jurgen Klinsmann:Well, I think the good thing is he has Kai Havertz back, you know, not only because he scored there in the last minute, but he has him back. And now he can evaluate these guys in training every single day. And only he knows now who's kind of ahead of each other. And to have that choice is huge. You know, I think Jokeres will score his goals. He did already score his goals. Maybe he's going out through a little bit of a dry period right now. But, yeah, I mean, I think that's the least of a problem for Arsenal right now.

30:56ESPN FC Crew:It's a problem to have, isn't it? Not that Jorcares is not scoring, but it's a good point to have. I'm intrigued, Jürgen. Tactically, how much do you have to change things if you're Arteta, depending who is that man up front? If it's Havertz, if it's Jesus, is it Jorcares? We talked a lot on this show about Jorcares' lack of kind of supply that maybe he would need to get his goal tally up. Arsenal seem kind of reserved when it comes to crossing the ball.

31:22Jurgen Klinsmann:I mean, he knows that. Obviously, in every training session, he sees who clicks the best with each other. You know, how they connect through the midfield. You know, the instinct that these players have for each other. You know, he knows that the best. You know, and so he can partner up whoever he feels like this is the best partnership. Or I play with a false number nine. so he has all these options I mean the roster is fantastic for right now at Arsenal so I think he finds the right solutions yeah I have a question Dan yes Frank you will get paid today don't worry I'm not worried about that I'm securing my contract no problem we all agree that you care nobody Nobody can contest that Gokieres is having a hard time, you know, since he signed.

32:16Jurgen Klinsmann:But what about the two others? Since when they've been good and very good to make the comparison? And I think Gokieres has been recruited because of the lack of good things from the two others. And really, how many times I heard Craig saying that Havertz was quite an aimer and he wasn't the striker that Arsenal needed. and the same for Jesus. So for me, they have a problem because of the way they play. And Ateta is responsible for that. Maybe not the players, but the way the tactics of Ateta is put down because that doesn't suit any striker. And maybe Haaland will be there. Maybe Haaland will have the same problem.

33:01ESPN FC Crew:Now he won't. Well, I don't see... Haaland will have any problem. No. I don't see... It's Haaland a problem for Manchester City. Where does he come on the list? By the way, Frank, you're being harsh on me. I didn't say Havertz was a nightmare. I just didn't think Arsenal would win the league with Havertz as their number nine. But look, they're all sort of different players. Here's the problem. I think Xocharez is more of an old-fashioned striker that needs service, needs good balls into the box from wide positions, needs early balls in there. Arsenal haven't really done that well enough for him.

33:32ESPN FC Crew:I think Jesus is a different player altogether. He's more about movement and link-up play and little one-twos around the box. and then he pops up now and again and he's got good feet in the box. You'll score you a goal and Havertz is somewhere floating between midfield and striker. And he's very strong in the air and he works hard. So they're all kind of different and it's going to be interesting to see which way Arteta goes, not just in the Premier League, but in the Cup final, now the Carabao Cup final, the FA Cup, the Champions League. And he's got all these players to pick from and every one of those strikers is a slightly...

34:09ESPN FC Crew:It's not like he's got two players that are the same. They're different types of players, but ultimately Xocharez is the most natural goal scorer of the three. He's proven that with his stats, and you just need to look at him to see that. But he definitely looks the more cumbersome of the three in this Arsenal side. There's no doubt about that. I think that's the issue. I think Xocharez just simply isn't mobile enough. So, to Craig's point, while he may rely on service, he's played against teams at the top of the end of the Supreme League table, at the bottom of the Premier League table, and his numbers just are not impressive, to put it as nice as they possibly can.

34:42ESPN FC Crew:And I feel that's down to his lack of mobility, whereas you get that with Jesus, you get that with Havertz. Havertz is not a natural finisher, so his numbers won't be Haaland's, as an example. But I just feel going forward, Giocares will see less and less time, because the other two offer that coming off the bench or starting, in being able to drop into midfield, being able to stretch defences, which Giorgis just simply does not do for me. So then, it will be Arsenal against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final. It's only over one leg this tie. It will take place on March the 22nd. Oh, there is that.

37:21ESPN FC Crew:Meanwhile, Liverpool, of course, have struggled with injuries this season. Conor Bradley out till the next campaign. Isak very much out as well until the end of March. It's a striker situation that I want to talk about. Jürgen and Franke are with us. And this is very much in a positive vibe, Jürgen. What we've seen from Eketike this season, of course, excellent at the weekend. That second goal he took was exceptional. You look at this, what do you really like about the Frenchman?

37:50Jurgen Klinsmann:Well, what I like is he's extremely spontaneous. You know, he's reading the game ahead and he surprises probably himself as well in what he's doing and how he finishes off certain opportunities. And it's very difficult to read for defenders. Now, it's a fun player really to watch.

38:09ESPN FC Crew:Yeah, Frank, obviously as well. This is your inspiration you're doing, isn't it, from the Community Shield? Yeah,

38:19Jurgen Klinsmann:that's what I saw the first game that I saw him playing. And it's true that we did that's something we didn't see when he was playing for Paris Saint-Germain. But he got something into his game where make him very, very confident about his skill. And I agree with Jürgen when he talks about him being very spontaneous in everything he does and very, very thin. in all his moves. He's fast. He's technically very, very good in a very short area with many players. And he always makes the right decision at the right time. That's the thing. He listens to the music. It's what I like to see and say about him is when he has the ball, he exactly knows when to shoot or when to pass or when to control.

39:07Jurgen Klinsmann:He's never in the wrong timing. And that's fantastic for a player. and he's still a very young player and in a special atmosphere, I have to say, because everybody around him is not as good as they have been last season. But he comes in and does the job. Very impressive.

39:26ESPN FC Crew:He plays. I've been very impressed with him in tight spaces. And I agree with everything the guys have said. His link-up play has been way better than I thought it was going to be linking up with his teammates. And we saw this in the Community Shield, actually, a week before the season started, was he's the type of player that when the ball comes up to his feet, he is spontaneous, but he's also at times got a picture. And that picture, sometimes there's a little flick around the corner and a one-two and spinning in and getting the ball back. And I've been really impressed with his touch. He's a big guy.

40:03ESPN FC Crew:He's a skinny guy. Very skinny guy. But he's big, big and tall. He's relatively quick. But I think he's got a deft first touch. or he's got a deft touch. He looks quite light on his feet. And some of the goals he scores, a lot of them, they have got this deft touch about him. You saw that goal there in that game, the little flick. That was the game against, was it Newcastle? Newcastle. Newcastle, where he scored the brilliant goal. Again, it was deft with the outside of the right foot. But I've been impressed with his awareness of where his teammates are. Sometimes the ball goes up to your front man.

40:34ESPN FC Crew:It's all about wrestling the centre half and hold up playing, all that sort of stuff. And that's part of the game. which he can do but I've really been impressed with his skill level in tight spaces as well as obviously his goals this season. So Isaac has obviously been out for an injury for a while Jürgen I suppose the big question is can you play both of them up front at the same time?

40:58Jurgen Klinsmann:Oh absolutely yeah absolutely I mean you obviously you try out different variations in training you want to see how they match up but but for for me from the outside looking at at all the forwards that Liverpool has at its disposal. It's difficult for a manager to get them all on the field and to get them playing time and to keep them happy. I mean, you have Florian Wirth, you have Ike Tike, you have Oka Isadis Injens, Salah, Gakpo, Kiesa is even on the bench still. I mean, this is, you figure out ways who matches well up front there but yeah, you have a lot of choices

41:40ESPN FC Crew:but if you played the two of them, Eketiki would probably have to play wide and if you didn't do that they'd have to play as a front pairing or maybe a little bit of a hybrid with Eketiki floating around but that's Florian Verts, that's really what his skill set is although he hasn't always played there this season but that's what he does and maybe one of the reasons you would do that is because they're getting nothing out of the front three with Mo Salah on that right hand side at the moment he left for the half corner as a passenger unfortunately this season and he's returned as a passenger and that's a headache for Arne Slott whether he changes shape to get two players in and Mo Salah out because you're not going to play Mo Salah Because if you play Alexander Izak and Eke Tiki and Florian Verts behind, then you can only play three in midfield.

42:35ESPN FC Crew:If you play two of them, you can only play four in midfield. And that means more Salah and Florian Verts as the left and right-sided midfielders. And that's not going to ever happen in a monthly Sundays. Because you're just going to get ripped apart. I mean, you can put Florian Verts left in a front three, Salah left in a front three, but you can't put them in wide positions in a four. because Liverpool have already struggled in the middle of the park this season and that's put extra pressure on the back line that has creaked and cracked under pressure. So it's not as simple as just saying, oh, we can play these two, they're great players.

43:12ESPN FC Crew:It's how's that going to affect the other areas of this Liverpool team that, if we're being honest, have already struggled badly this season. You take his hand back? I won't put him back in, by the way. Oh, you take him back? To Newcastle. No, he's... Oh, forgiven, Sean. He's burnt his bridges. He's burnt his bridges. He's burnt his bridges with the Jordies. You bitter man. For free, for free, Shaka. Yes, we are.

43:36Jurgen Klinsmann:You get it for free back.

43:40ESPN FC Crew:I'm with Craig on this. I'm not sure how you play the two, especially with this defence that Liverpool have right now. You've got to put two defenders in front of this back four. The back four just are underperforming at that level that you've got to put two in front of there. and if you do that, then you have no numbers to make the two strikers work. Ekutiki is a player in form. I know Izak is injured. When he comes back, I don't know how you shoehorn him into that. And you've already been weak in the full-back position this year, so you've got to have... If you change... This is all big. It's all ifs and buts.

44:14ESPN FC Crew:But if you did change the shape of the side, you have to have people in the wide position that are prepared to graft and come back and help. Because you may have noticed, if you've watched Liverpool this year, Kerkhez has really struggled. It's been a tough move for the young man, moving to a big club at Liverpool. And they've struggled on the other side because Frimpong's not really a right back. And he's certainly not the biggest. He's quick, but he's not the biggest. He's got no physicality. I mean, he's really small. And Conor Bradley's injured. Joe Gomez has played there, but he's always injured.

44:49ESPN FC Crew:So you can't, you've already got issues in those areas. You can't just say, hey, we're going to play 4-4-2 and we're going to put two attacking players and the right and left side in midfield that are not going to do much defensively because your full-backs are already getting murdered this season already. So it's way more difficult than that. And by the way, I don't think there's a rush to get Isaac into the side. I think Ekotiki, as we spoke about, has been very, very good. Yeah. Frank, I'm going to move on. I apologise because I want to talk about Florian Wirtz, obviously. Having his best spell, no doubt about it, since making that move.

45:24ESPN FC Crew:From the Bundesliga to the Premier League, last 10 games, we've seen six goals and two assists. His international teammate, Jonathan Tiles, has been speaking exclusively to ESPN FC. This is what he had to say about Wirtz. One of your international teammates and former club teammates, Florian Wirtz, how was it for you, just as his friend, I guess, to see him go through the process that he's had at Liverpool in the first half of the season. Now, I think everybody is seeing the Florian Witts that we all saw for many years at Leverkusen. But how was that for you? Yeah, it was really interesting for me.

46:05ESPN FC Crew:And, yeah, we talked a lot during that time and now as well. So I know a bit how it was for him. and obviously the start was not what he expected, but what everybody expected. But I think it was good. I think it was good for him to learn, not only as a player, to adapt to everything, but also his personality.

46:36Jurgen Klinsmann:He will grow from that. And now he's doing good,

46:41ESPN FC Crew:but I think you will even see more of him. The Premier League is going to see Florian Wurz during the next month or years and that he's going to be there and he's going to still improve. Jürgen, you never doubted him?

47:03Jurgen Klinsmann:No, absolutely not. This kid is good. I mean, he showed it already, you know, in his very kind of young career so many times at Leverkusen on the highest level. And everyone is different. You know, when you move to another club, you don't know what to expect. Obviously, the pressure is up. Then the price tag is insane nowadays what these kids have to live with. And so it will take time. And some they explode after two months and some explode maybe after ten months. or maybe it takes two years and then they say, you know, it was not the right thing for him to do it. But maybe after two years, you know exactly then what to do.

47:38Jurgen Klinsmann:This kid is so talented and obviously now he turns it on. It's getting better and better. That means also he feels more and more at home in Liverpool. The life outside the field is extremely important as well. So you've got to go through that as well. And no, I'm really pleased with him. and I think he will be or he can be a player that really will show off big time in this summer's World Cup.

48:05ESPN FC Crew:Yeah, exactly. He'll be part of a number of youngsters who will be representing Germany in the World Cup this summer here in the States. Yet when you take a look at who the favourites are to go all the way, Germany behind the likes of Spain, England, France, Brazil, Argentina and Portugal. Jonathan Tarr spoke about the fact that the Germans are underdogs going into this. Do you think that from the outside Germany will maybe be a bit underestimated in terms of the circle of favorites that there are for the tournament? Yeah, maybe from some people from the outside.

48:44Jurgen Klinsmann:We're a bit underestimated because recently we didn't perform as we wanted to and we expected more from ourselves.

48:54ESPN FC Crew:So obviously the other teams, they performed better in the last tournament. But I think especially the people in the football world, like I'm talking about players and coaches,

49:08Jurgen Klinsmann:they know as well how much potential we have as a team, how good we can be as a team. So I don't think they will underestimate us, but maybe, yeah, from outside.

49:22ESPN FC Crew:Jürgen, does this take the pressure off, considering you think the sides that you were involved with in the past, the expectation was pretty much win or bust?

49:31Jurgen Klinsmann:I mean, there are two ways of expectations. Maybe the international media has a certain expectation of what they've seen from Germany in the last two World Cups, which was disastrous, obviously. In Russia and in Qatar, it was two horrible experiences that Germany went through. They did a bit better in the Euros, obviously, that they hosted. The expectations in Germany are very simple. You go to the United States, Mexico and Canada to win the World Cup. This is just as easy as it is because that's what the 10 countries that you just had on the screen, that's what the people expect in those countries.

50:07Jurgen Klinsmann:You want your team to go all the way through and maybe make it happen and win this trophy. And Jonathan Tarr, he knows that. He knows that the expectations are there from the public, from everyone that loves the game in Germany to go to America and come home with the trophy. But that's what you live with. That's what you deal with. It's just a normal thing for Germans.

50:32ESPN FC Crew:I understand all that, particularly with the success Germany have had and others. But there's got to be a realisation, which I'm sure there is. I think it's more hope than anything but there's got to be a realisation when you look at this current group of players that the chances of that happening, if they're being honest, are slim when this current Germany team have a good day it can be a really good day but unfortunately for them when they have a bad one it's very bad it's very bad and we've seen that in the qualifying campaign, the struggles but I've also seen them play France, in France It was maybe a year, 18 months ago, and they were excellent.

51:11ESPN FC Crew:They passed the ball, they outplayed France, some of their football was great, Verts played, Moussiala played, and it was away from home. As I say, when they can turn it on, on any given match, they're not on bad side, but they have too many, with this current group that I've seen, they have too many bad days at the office, and then they have the odd, really bad day, and when that comes along, almost anybody can get a result against them. Jürgen, I'm sure we'll discuss the World Cup maybe a few more times between now and the kickoff, of course, here in June. For the moment, we'll say thank you very much.

53:40That is it.

53:41ESPN FC Crew:That brings us to the end of today's show. Holland hater. Frank. I just wanted to ask Jürgen about psychers and you jump in. That's it. Extra time is next.

53:57ESPN FC Crew:Welcome in to the latest edition of Extra Time. Frank LeBeouf is with us, Shaka as well. Before pretty much every show, Craig goes, Right, let's keep this one quick, boys. I'm trying to move the show along. You keep jumping in, interrupting. I never say, let's make it quick. Yeah, right. All right, every day. Short and sharp, 23 minutes. I know, exactly. And you're jumping in. I'm just trying to move the show along, and you're asking why. Frank, you didn't get to talk much in the show. That's a first. And then it's not. That's very good. Right.

54:34Jurgen Klinsmann:By the way, I have something to say. Because I had the time to watch you guys, because I wasn't talking. Craig, you have a hair problem. You know, at the back, you have a little hair problem.

54:44ESPN FC Crew:Yeah, sticking up. Wow. It's starting to get a bit worse. What's the problem? A bald guy is telling you you have a hair problem. Tell me what the problem is. I think I know what the problem is.

54:57Jurgen Klinsmann:Yeah, no, no, I don't even know how you say that, but something doesn't go with the rest of it, you know, so that's a problem. It's a, what do you call it?

55:06ESPN FC Crew:I can't remember. It's a cow lick. Cow lick. Yeah, that's it. When I have my hair cut short, it's not bad, but when it grows a little bit, it tends to stick up. Fascinating. It's great. At least in my worries on here, if I'm being honest. How come the two people that talk about my hair the most are, strangely enough, Frank LaBeouf and Stuart Robb?

55:34Jurgen Klinsmann:It's what you call compensation.

55:36ESPN FC Crew:There we go. It's quite a picture of Robbo yesterday with K's hair. Oh, it's not going anywhere near that. Oh, my God. Yes, exactly. No, move on. Stop it. Stop. A lot of people talking about what you've said. Craig, Chelsea still listen to you on how to defend the corner kick. How was the application of it? Arsenal had a corner, Chelsea brought everybody back. Yes. And obviously not just before he kicked, took the corner, but once they brought everybody back, then three of them sprinted up. And I saw the Arsenal players sort of looking at each other and I went, Oh, nobody told us what to do. You know, they all...

56:16ESPN FC Crew:Kids, Cheryl, come in. What, they're doing my plan? They're doing it. They've listened to me. Oh, this is Greg Burley. The dogs are there going... The dogs are there going... Oh, he's piping up. What a gigantic bore. The dog's like, what's wrong with his hair? Yeah, and it was the bald dog. I think a dog licked it. It was the one-eyed dog. I was going, your hair's sticking up. Shut up, you only get one eye. Big teeth, mate. Monaco did it against them in the Champions League. More teams should try and mix it up. That's my only point. Don't be scared. Fed up seeing Gabriel at the back post. Yeah.

56:59ESPN FC Crew:Frank, which side was better, the€2 ,000 France side or the 1998 World Cup side?

57:10Jurgen Klinsmann:Well, that's a good question. That's a very good question.

57:14ESPN FC Crew:You didn't play much in the€2 ,000, no, Frank?

57:17Jurgen Klinsmann:No, I only played one game. But you had some players like Wiltord, I think Anelka, who came to the€2 ,000. I think it was because of the others, the team were even more experienced and stronger. but I would say the 2 ,000 euros that was that was more effective even if I have to say and to be fair to the Italians never we should have won that final and I talked about that with Alessandro and Pierrot a lot because they had two big chances and he should have scored yes but Italy were better but he couldn't finish the job and and suddenly Robert Perez came on and changed something with Sylvain Wiltold and of course David Trezeguet who scored the golden goal.

58:12Jurgen Klinsmann:But overall I would say the 2000 were slightly better than the 98 I would say.

58:19ESPN FC Crew:Was that the headbutt? No. No 98. Yeah. Oh the headbutt? Yeah. Oh it was close. Yep. Shaka what were your favourite keeper training exercises? Oh. What? Did you have ones that you preferred doing than others? Who? What was the worst one? There must have been one that you were like... Running was the worst. Yeah. It used to make keepers run...

58:44Jurgen Klinsmann:Diving in a...

58:44ESPN FC Crew:For pre-season.

58:48ESPN FC Crew:It used to make keepers run for pre-season. That made no sense to me. No. I wasn't very good at it either. Right. As you might expect. That's going to be the worst feeling if you're a player and you've got you in front of them. Yeah, yeah. That's kind of... I always just try to beat one player. Okay. West Ham was John Hartson. Newcastle. Used to be Ginola. Used to be down in the back there. That was my target. Beat one person. Frank's kryptonite. Did you play at all? Like, see these talks about Grobbelaar coming and joining in like five or so? Did you? In pre-season, they'd have like small-sided games with no keepers and keepers would join in on the puck.

59:27ESPN FC Crew:And how? Did you join in? Did you in? Yeah, I was very good. I was very good, Dan. I think the big concern, especially once you get close to the season, is they were afraid of goalkeepers tackling them. Yes, because you're so close. They were afraid of these big feet clomping around. Like, we don't want our goalkeepers anywhere near to our free players. So early in pre-season you would get to join in, but then as you kind of got closer to the season, like, nah. As I always say, Shaq, there's always a big stupid goalkeeper in the world. There it is. When everything is going wrong, there's always a big stupid goalkeeper somewhere lurking in the background.

1:00:03ESPN FC Crew:Craig, does Nico O 'Reilly being playing in multiple positions at City help or hurt his chance to make the England World Cup squad?

1:00:13ESPN FC Crew:No, I think it will help. I mean, maybe some people would have a different view, but I think if he's playing well in those positions, which generally he is, I think having a flexibility for a manager with certain players is not a bad thing you know if he's if Tuchel has an issue in midfield or an issue at fullback or an issue wherever I think Nico O 'Reilly has shown that he can fill in at least maybe two or three different positions so I don't think it's always a good thing for your club career but maybe that will help him convince Thomas Tuchel that he could be the go-to guy if there's a problem.

1:00:58ESPN FC Crew:So, yeah, he should be fine. Frank, which teammate in your career had a nomadic experience of moving to one club after another around the world similar to James Rodriguez? He's gone to Minnesota. I'm asking you the question. Oh, you said Frank. Oh, did I? Yeah. Oh, OK. I was thinking, don't go to Frank because he might not understand the question.

1:01:18Jurgen Klinsmann:But then you know, I understand the question and I try. I think there was a guy called Xavier Gravelin and he played for many, many teams in France and everywhere around in Europe. But he wasn't like James Rodriguez. I mean, James Rodriguez is kind of a record, I guess. But many, many players that I've known, I've been through between 10 and 15 clubs in their career. Because they struggle at some point, because they struggle. They have to be fair. It's not because they settled down and they were born. No, it's because they couldn't find their ways.

1:02:03ESPN FC Crew:Who was the youngster, Sean? Don was the one. The US. Freddie Adu. Yeah, yeah. He's gone to, he's been everywhere. Yeah, he was everybody. I can't think of anybody else. Don. Yeah, Don. Not in a bad way. Yeah, yeah, Don. Don had a very good career, but he did make a lot of moves. I don't know. He just wasn't liked. You were just saying Shaq, he wasn't silly liked. He was a bad apple. He was a bad apple. Oh, boy. You went, oh, no wonder he's lived a nomadic life. I will say the difference between Don and James Rodriguez. Because it's one thing moving multiple clubs in the same country. I miss his been all over the place.

1:02:43ESPN FC Crew:I mean... Luis Garcia as well. He's been everywhere. Has he? Yeah, yeah, of course. Obviously, he was in Mexico, wasn't he? He was in India. Obviously, England. Something like this French guy I know. Yeah, Luis Garcia, the one that we work with. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And he's still at it? Of course. Yes, exactly. If there's a dollar drops on the floor in that country, he's on a flight. Yeah. But I'd be interested to know... Oh, boy. Don would be able to tell you, obviously, what the longest period he spent at one club but are you sure he'd be able to tell you that within a 12 month yeah just have a guess yeah just have a guess it's probably more accurate than dom uh that's it frank any last words that is me uh nothing guys that was always a pleasure to

1:03:28Jurgen Klinsmann:uh a pleasure to see you and i'm going to my bed because i'm exhausted i'm on stage every night Oh, wow.

1:03:34ESPN FC Crew:This is yours. How's it going? How are the reviews?

1:03:39Jurgen Klinsmann:The reviews, I didn't read anything, but it seems to be very good because we have a standing ovation every time. So I think people are not that fake in France.

1:03:49ESPN FC Crew:They're not just leaving. You know, Frank's given himself a standing ovation.

1:03:55Jurgen Klinsmann:That's it. Frank, you've got a bit of a problem in the back of your head.

1:03:59ESPN FC Crew:You see? Yes, yes. Yeah, I know. I know. One hair. I haven't got much.

1:04:15ESPN FC Crew:We're doing that. Your best time. Perfect. We'll be back tomorrow. So we will.

1:04:39ESPN FC Crew:From 30 for 30 podcasts.

1:04:49Jurgen Klinsmann:Brian Pata, senior defensive lineman from Miami. Gunned down.

1:04:54ESPN FC Crew:The key to this case, it's Brian. Boy, he's ripping. An hour before he died, he was on the phone arguing with somebody. This might be a hit. You want the truth. They just want a conviction being placed under arrest. We had a killer amongst us. Murder at the U. Listen now.
