0:35Welcome in to the latest edition of ESPN FC. I'm Dan Thomas, joined by Craig Burley and Shaka Hislop. Of course, Arsenal fans are still struggling to believe they were beaten at home by Manchester United yesterday. They are in denial, Craig. The newspaper is all about that strike from Cunha, of course, that gave United a 3-2 win. Arteta not happy after the game.

1:27not nobody will lose football matches, it's how we react to that. And I am very convinced, because I know those players addressing them and how much we want it, that we're going to react immediately. We welcome in Mario Malkio, and for the first time this year, Kieran Gibbs is with... Oh, what a treat. He's good to be back, guys. Isn't that lovely? We always get them back in when there's a bit of Arsenal like that. And by the way, before we start... Before we start... Moi. What? Only 100 %-er in this snow. Oh, my goodness. We were off. It was all days off. These two weren't here. Kay, Ali, Steve.

2:09I was asked not to come in. Shaq, one day. I was told that was it. Alex had it all in hand. Whatever you say, it's fine. I don't begrudge you guys a day off. All I'm saying is... Well, that's good. Only 100%. Well done. Congratulations. Okay, congrats. I'm not sure if the viewers would agree it's that much of a feat, but there we are. Oh, you should have seen my drive home. Yes, no one cares. All right. Nips up, bud. Ah, Kieran. Have you got some water for you, Kieran? Nearby? What for? What for, Dan? Just in case you start choking like your side is at the moment. Oh, boy. You're throwing it all away, mate.

2:48Oh, boy. What's the most frustrating part of this all for you? Set pieces. No, no, no. For the record, for the record, I'm actually, I'm not overly concerned. I'm really not. Yeah, but that's because the rest of them are not very good. They're chucking it Arsenal's way, aren't they? But also, I'll be honest, I feel that Arsenal fall into that bracket as well, of not being, you know, at their full potential. And that's how highly I think of this team. I think the ceiling is so high that they fall into the bracket of performing sub-maximally. Look, I think it's one of those, they're not going to concede three goals at home very often in the league.

3:37It's either individual errors or moments of brilliance. And that both happened the other night. I don't think it stops them in terms of winning the league. I don't doubt that. I just think that they've hit a bit of a mental block in terms of their creativity. If I look at teams that have won the league over the years, they always hit a state of flow where everything looks easy and they're just in a rhythm. them and I think that for Arsenal they just feel it just feels like they they can't break down that barrier I think they're gonna go and run someone five nil in the in the next game and they're they're just gonna release everything that's that's how I feel what's what's gonna happen um they just need that they just need that break they need that break they're creating enough chances um but yes I think ultimately they need to bounce back straight away from this last game and move on.

4:46I think they've got the ability to go and win the league. And yeah, I don't think we have anything to worry about. All right, Arsenal TV. I think they will. Well, they didn't create enough chances yesterday. Yeah, it was yesterday. And some of the games that's been very pedestrian, you talked about it the other week after the Forest game, they're probably going to win the league. That's how it looks at the moment. And it's not their fault that City will probably fall over themselves. It's not their fault that Liverpool are falling apart like a cheap suit. It's not their fault that Chelsea might put a run together, but it's unlikely.

5:20So none of that is Arsenal's fault. But there are deficiencies in this side that, you know, maybe give the others a little bit of a glimmer of hope. Now, we've seen some Arsenal fans, oh, Dorgoo came off his arm. No, it didn't. you should have the penalty at Nottingham Forest no you shouldn't oh well this is against us I mean what you've got Arsenal mates most of them are not right in the head why are you angry with me I suck his mates his Arsenal supporting mates takes them all the time just they're not they're not wired right it's just it's everything but look they are strong there's a reason Xocharez is not on the side because Jesus was fit again he was in better form Xocharez you know we're going to get to that a little bit later.

6:05The whys and whereabouts, they're not creating as many chances. But definitely yesterday, they just looked as if they're playing at the moment with a little bit of a handbrake on.

6:16Frank Leboeuf:I think you can say that about Arsenal for quite some time. I think the difference between Arsenal and everybody else, while everybody's right, everybody else just seems to be falling apart, Arsenal are still very good defensively. And that's the thing that will get them over the line, that maybe they drop points, but they don't see them losing. Too many, everybody else kind of given the inconsistencies, especially how poor they are at the back, every single one of the likely contenders, you feel that there are more losses between now and May than with Arsenal. That's the only thing. And there is still this feeling, this belief about Arsenal, and I'll say it again, and set pieces, and that could be their saviour.

6:56Frank Leboeuf:Because let's be honest, as good as defence is, as they have, You look at their attack and it has been underwhelming, is about as good a word as I can use here. But Kai Osaka hasn't shown anything like the player we know he can be. We've spoken about Giorgores, with Trossard yesterday, but it could be anybody else. And it's a front three or front four, however you want to look at it, if you include Odegaard in there, that just have not created enough. And while they dominated the early exchanges, Lemons had two, maybe three saves to make, one of significance. It's just not an attack that fills you with a whole lot of confidence.

7:41Frank Leboeuf:Defensively, that will be the difference maker for Arsenal in winning this title. Now, yesterday on the show, I said, Saka and set pieces. Kinda, that's not just what Arsenal are about, but it's a big part. and we talked about Xocharez and why he struggled and this is not all of the reason but one of the reasons is you've got to leave this guy isolated and too many times Arsenal are dragging players towards him and the space isn't there but it's also from Saka's point of view Shaq that he I think needs to do better in getting half a yard and putting the ball in the box. Arsenal's reluctance not just in this game but in the bulk of games to put crosses in.

8:22Look at the men in the box, there's a lot of players in the box to receive a cross but when you drag defenders towards Bukaya Saka it's got no room to operate and again here it's back to rights there's an opportunity to put it in the box they don't put it in what would I want Saka to do here one of the best wide players in Europe go at your man go at Dalo look at the space get a yard put a cross in what does he do he comes back inside this is a big theme of what Arsenal have been doing recently They've not utilised the width, they've come inside to areas where Manchester United were strong and look how difficult it is to create any opportunities.

9:02It is tippy-tappy, it is pedestrian, it is not getting the best out of Bukaya Saka and there was just, look at this, 7 % of crosses in open play. Now, if I'm Victor Xochrez or Gabriel Jesus or any other striker, I'm going to Mika Latete and the coaching staff and say, look, you brought me in to score goals. We need to be, we have Nani Madweke, we have Martinelli, we have Trossard, we have Bukaya Saka, we have players that can put good quality into the box. if they're the best at set pieces and they are that means they've got players that can whip in good balls but when you have 7 % of crosses from open play in a match that you've not had any luck trying to play through the midfield in the middle it hasn't worked and yeah you might say well they've got Harry Maguire the big guy with the big he'll head it away yeah they have but if you can take it away from Maguire onto Lissandro Martinez who's much smaller you may have noticed you can then go and attack it But if I've got front men that are not getting deliveries coming in and they're making runs, and Arsenal continue to go back into Odegaard, back into Zubimendi, back into Rice, out the other side, back again, if I'm the opponent, I am comfortable.

10:29I am defending in the width of my penalty box. I've got numbers back there because I know Arsenal are going to try and break down those little areas, which at times they have been good at. but when you're in a big game be it the Champions League or the Premier League and you're struggling and I've got the Saka's of this world who Shaq has mentioned hasn't been at his best and one of the reasons is that they're not isolating him enough they're crowding the area out he's got no space to operate and he has to do better himself he doesn't always have to beat the man half a yard whip it in go and attack it Arsenal have not done that well enough in my opinion in the last three or four weeks.

11:10Mario, if Craig can see this, why isn't Arteta addressing this? No, but sometimes also it comes down to the striker itself. You know, like sometimes we all played with certain forwards. And if you don't put the ball like how, you know, Craig highlighted, if you don't put it in, some of the guys, they fall out with you. They have an argument with you on the field. So it's not always like the strike has to go to the coach. Sometimes you just have to tell your players around you. But even when I watched the game, like I saw there were moments where, where men, you know, they had the ball, they played the ball really calmly at the back, at the first half, and they didn't look as dangerous.

11:46But the moment they wanted to attack, that's when they gave Arsenal a lot of trouble. And sometimes I'm being asking, like, okay, this is the second time, okay, they played a reaction game, you know, like when you watch Arsenal play. But then I see that happen, I'm like, whoa, what's happening, you know? Like, why are they not really penetrating? because they couldn't do it. Because the energy that Man United brought to that game, that's where Arsenal had problems with. They could not handle that energy. And that's why Embraimov plays up front. Because Embraimov gives Man United the possibility they can play that deep and they can wait that long just to hurt the opponent.

12:26And that's why things like this happen to them. And this, okay, okay, some beauty needs to be in football because that's why we love the game. Because the way this kid strikes two in a row, he scores, but this strike was incredible. And then this one when Cunha came on, I was like, what is he going to do? And the kid does this. This is why they brought him to that team, because at Wolves, he was the one that created danger and he does it again. Oh my God, I couldn't believe that. I know Bakaya Saka, I know I'm going to pick, I know Bakaya Saka can beat a lot of players. I know he's a skillful guy.

12:57He's got everything. But it's not just him, the others as well. There's nothing wrong with getting a yard and putting it in. one of the best players, one of the best crossers of a ball ever in the history of the English game in our era, and you'll know this, being a goalie, David Beckham. David Beckham couldn't beat anybody. He wasn't a wide guy that wouldn't have passed people, but it was out to him, he got a touch out of his feet, and he whipped it in. And he was one of the best at doing that. And if you were Van Nistelrooy or Cole or Sheringham or anybody else, you knew when it went out to him, it was half a yard and it was getting whipped in, and it was usually whipped in with quality.

13:36Arsenal, to me, want to too many times, and they're top of the league. I hear people say they're top of the league. I get all that. And they're favourites for the league and they're big favourites for the Champions. I get all that. But we're just going through some of their issues. There's nothing wrong with getting that ball and just putting it in the box. You don't have to score the perfect goal. So why are they trying to do that when it hasn't been effective at all of late, Kieran? well I just think they're conditioned to play in you know if you go back over the last 10 years all Arsenal fans have really been crying out for is an out and out centre forward you know and I think Diokares has only just come in and fit that profile of the type of striker that Arsenal have so desperately wanted for so many years so you know majority of the team are conditioned to playing without an out-and-out centre-forward.

14:33And so I think there's just an adjustment period there with Giocares. And I love him, by the way. I just think that it's taking a bit more time. Maybe not even him time. I think it's taking him time, but it's also taking the other players around time to get used to playing with an out-and-out centre-forward. Arteta's given up on him, though, hasn't he, Kieran? You've got United at home and he's on the bench. No, I think he's got to make the toughest decisions now of his career. This is the biggest couple of months coming up and he needs to make these decisions. I think ideally he would want Havertz back and I think he would actually go with him if he was fit.

15:19So Xhorel Perez has been a bust because I'm buying Xhorel Perez because Havertz and Jesus aren't good enough for what I want. this is the player that's going to take me over the line yet he's third on the list now behind those two yet you still think he's going to come good? He's not because surely he would have done that by now I don't think you can call him a bust after being there for what six months has he been there I think you've got to give him a bit more time, he's a born he's an out and out goalscorer, he's a born goalscorer that's clear to see but you know there's other parts to the team that lead to a striker firing on all cylinders.

15:56I think if you take him into consideration across the board, there's been a bit of a drought. You know, Martinelli, Saka, Madueke. I think we're used to seeing across the front three pretty high numbers over the last few seasons. So I don't think it's solely on him. I think the rest of the team as well. for me it's purely mental and listen I wasn't part of a team that went on to lift the Premier League so I don't know what it takes to get past that final hurdle but what it seems like from the outside is it seems like they've lost that enjoyment and they're just it kind of seems like they're desperate to just get the job done even when I see the celebrations of when they score I love seeing the passion and you can tell how much they want it but i just feel like you know there's there's no smiling there's no enjoyment um there's there's it's more relief and i think that that is um you know starting to take its toll and i want to see them enjoying themselves a little bit more they're one of the most exciting teams in the world um they just got own they just got own that title they just got own own the title that they've been given by so many people um i think everyone everyone agrees that they have probably the best squad in Europe.

17:25And it's just up to them to go and take it. It's just up to them to go and take it. But I think we are going to see, you know, I think this is just going to be looked back on as a blip. It's a healthy wake-up call that, you know, this isn't going to be handed to them. No league is. And, yeah, I think time will tell and they're going to bounce back quickly. It's pressure, isn't it? We're at the pressure stage of the season. It's only going to get cranked up. Thankfully for them, the others, I keep repeating this, may not be strong enough to put a run together, but they may. But it is pressure. It's pressure they haven't really had.

18:03They had the pressure of fighting with Man City a couple of years ago, but City were always favourites, right? We'd agree on that. And once Liverpool got off to the start they did last year, then they were always favourites. but now this season with the issues around the others and the fact Arsenal are relatively strong in terms of the squad as Kieran mentioned then they're now the favourites they're not the team that people are saying well can they hang on to City or can they catch Liverpool or are they going to be there at the end now they are the team that are there and they're there to be shot down they're there for others to catch they're there for the media to say you're going to crack under this pressure.

18:50And that's a new position for them. As strong as they are. It's new territory, yeah. As strong as they are. And I agree with Kieran. I think that, and we've talked about this, they have, when everybody's fit, the best squad in Europe. They've got a back eight, almost. They've got midfield they can rotate. They've got wide players. And they've got three strikers when Havertz comes back. All right, they might not be the most functioning strikers, but they've got three strikers. But what they have is everybody else now with their beady eyes on them, every week, twice a week, waiting for them to fold.

19:24And that brings a different pressure to being the team that's trying to hunt down a city side that were at one point the strongest team in Europe by quite some. So that is a different scenario for these Arsenal players. And that takes the enjoyment out of it a little bit. That's what I wanted to bring up with you, Shaq. You think like when Newcastle had that run, everything's great, playing the best attacking football, so exciting to watch. They're going to beat the big bad enemy Manchester United. Then all of a sudden the air starts coming out of that balloon. You must be able to feel it. Like training everywhere.

19:55And you imagine Arsenal going to training today is a very different scenario to say that it was three months ago.

20:00Frank Leboeuf:Absolutely it is. And I've said this time and time again, it's far easier to chase than it is to lead. The issue with leading, as Arsenal are finding out right now, and the boys have all said, is that there's a pressure to not make mistakes. The pressure, you feel you're good enough to get the best of the opponent, but you don't want to make mistakes. And as a result, you kind of play within yourself. When you're chasing, you want to make things happen. So you take risks looking for a different result that you won't take when you're leading. And that's what you're seeing from Arsenal now. And then they know we're great at set pieces.

20:33Frank Leboeuf:nine times out of ten that would bail us out of jail so you aren't seeing soccer taking risks you aren't seeing again it was Trossard or whether we're talking Martinelli I wish somebody could explain to me what happened to Eze those kinds of players who are creative, who are the ones who kind of bring you just want robots no I wouldn't say that because again Newcastle was in that same position albeit 30 years ago. And you just, it is just an internal pressure where you do not want to be the one to make mistakes. If the manager says, let's do this, I'm going to do that and nothing else. There's not going to be any variation to it.

21:18Frank Leboeuf:Now, again, so I can't put that on Arteta because I wouldn't have put it on Kevin Keegan. That's just the nature of leading. Mario, what's it like in that situation? Obviously, when you were playing at Ajax, you were young, you were expected to win every game you move to Chelsea is very much under the microscope there as well. It's something that's fascinating for people who haven't played the game at that level, like how winning and losing completely and utterly defines how things are in your life day to day, at training, going home, and surely it's going to affect you if you're an Arsenal player at the moment.

21:53Yeah, definitely. I think, look, the guys are already highlighted. You know, look, the team's got a lot of talent, but that's not enough, you understand? And sometimes you want someone around you that is more experienced in it. And what was one of the big question marks for me was that he took Odegaard off, and that's my captain. And normally the captain is the one that leads us in a direction in the sense of when we're unstable, we look at him or we hear him or he drags us. And that is one of the questions that I had, like why did he took him off? And the other part also, you know, Kieran highlighted the, you know, the wingers and all the guys on the outside.

22:24The last 10 games, I mean, away from Goykeres, scoring penalties. Saka was known for as a winger, he scores maybe he hit the 10 mark, Martinelli 10 mark. Those were the balance that they came from. And now we're looking at, we're waiting for goals from them and that's why they're creating more pressure on them. On the other part, what you just said is that sometimes you need someone around you that is just going to help you and drag you. And who in that team has that? They don't have all that experience. So that's why they needed to do it all together, use the quality that they have, and make sure that sometimes when you want to play the typical game, like how they are so good at set pieces.

23:08You know why? Because sometimes they're brutal. That's not typical Arsenal. And that is what they also sometimes have to put in their play. Because when they play against a team like Man United, Man United is a team that's trying to rebuild. You are a team that they are facing, that they are worried about. But now they're going to play the game If you look at the end of the game, look how Man United turned up. They were trying to win the game. How can Man United come to your stadium and having that feeling like, I'm going to try to win the game? No, that's not possible. They've got nothing to lose, Mario.

23:36They've got nothing to lose. What I don't see... I understand that, but you don't do that there. You don't do that there. Come on, Kieran. I don't come to your stadium and try to show you I'm going to win. I'm going to beat you. Normally, there was fear in us because we know you guys were great. and I think if you're leading the league right now, you think people have no fear for you? Of course they have a little bit of fear. It feels quite wrong to be... Not that I feel bad about it, but we're taking apart a team that are... Top of the league. No, absolutely. Top of the league. But otherwise we've got to sit here and be nice to Manchester United.

24:09Well, I'm OK with that. I mean, some people... I'm OK with that because I tell you what, it's nice to see the lack of... It's not a negative press conference and chat with Ruben Amarim with his chin on the floor, which at least that's your start. But you know what I see a lot? It's almost like the programme to do a certain thing because Arsenal play in triangles like a lot of these teams, little boxes, little triangles, these little one-twos. And it's always like when the ball goes out to Saka or a wide player, they have to have two or three players to be able to do that in that area. But I go back to the point I made earlier that that just crowds the area out for technical players like Saka.

24:48but when I was playing if I had a good wide player who I thought had the full back on toast I am making sure nobody's going I'm firing the ball out to him and I am telling everybody else isolate him, do not get in that space but I don't see that from it's not just Arsenal, I don't see that from teams now it's almost like, well this is how we do it so we've got to go and do it this way whereas I'm going to rely on the individual skill of certain players and Saka is one of them. If I'm a central midfielder, I'm getting him, him and him with the scruff of the neck and say, when I play that ball out to him, I don't want you within 20 yards of that player because he's got one and one with a fullback and he's going to beat him nine times out of ten.

25:31I don't see that now. I see everybody running over like it's a school playground. You remember all the kids used to run over? Bunching. Into the one... And bunching. And when you do that... Don't bunch, Thomas! There's no space. That's why you never made it. Apart from the fact you were too small. We spoke a lot about Manchester United. You're not nice, Greg. Come on, man. Bobby's nice to him. We spoke about Manchester United yesterday, by the way. You can check that out. They're also very nice to United as well on the latest edition of the Gab and Jules podcast. Be sure to check it out.

27:47Frank Leboeuf:I like things my way, my coffee, my schedule, and my treatment. So I talked to my doctor about self-injecting with the VivGuard Hytrulo Pre-Filled Syringe, which contains FGuard Tegamide Alpha and Hyaluronidase QVFC. It's injected under your skin subcutaneously. It means I can inject in my space on my time. It's my treatment, my way. Visit VivGuardMyWay.com. That's V-Y-V-G-A-R-T MyWay.com. and talk to your doctor about Vivgard Hattrulo. Brought to you by Argenics. We criticize players when they don't speak out. Virgil van Dijk has, and now we're going to tear him apart. But here we go. He speaks about all three goals that were conceded in Liverpool's defeat against Bournemouth.

28:29He explains the first one, it was a difficult ball to judge during the circumstances. The wind is very tricky. The second one, we were down to 10 men. You can argue that you have to maybe kick the ball out or not. The third one, of course, which came from the long throw, What I felt on the pitch was I was clearly blocked, but obviously the ref and VAR don't give it and that's something we then have to accept. Excuses. Let's go to defenders. Let's go through this one by one. Mario, wind, tell me about it. The wind, no, no, no, don't give me that man. Because if I have the wind, that means they have the wind too.

29:04So it's not just only for me. That's what people would say. No, if they have a problem, you have the same problem. Look at this, the wind goes, no, he miskicks the ball. He knows that he made a mistake there. Come on now, you can turn around and put your hands up. No, no. And we have to judge Van Dijk on the ability, what he has. And not on thinking like, oh, he's a little defender. No, he's a great defender, so then you have to deal with it. OK, so the first one, we're not giving Winders a pass? No. You know, without going on, because we'll go to the other boys on this, a Dutchman. That'll be in the Dutch newspaper tomorrow.

29:41What's the Dutch paper, Jack? I don't know. He's having a pop at another... The Amsterdam Times. The Amsterdam Times. You're looking for people, man, Greg. You're looking for people, Greg. What's up with you, man? That'll be in the Amsterdam Echo. Guess what Mario said. Mario's right. He'd have more respect, and this is not the first time with Van Dijk. It's every week. You'd have more respect if he came out and said, I made a complete mess of the first goal. It was an easy clearance. I should have cleared it. It's absolutely on me. The wind is difficult. It's tricky. Oh, yeah, well, you want to play in, you know, these conditions every week.

30:24There's no rain. There's no wind. There's nothing. No, he just made a mess of it.

30:27Frank Leboeuf:Here's my thing. I'm fine. The wind plays tricks with the ball, and you miss a jump. But if that happens, then you play the man. If you miss the clearance. But if you look at Van Dijk, he seems to miss the clearance and then just stop. Now, even if he just chases that, it comes off his knee and goes out for a corner. Worst case scenario. But he gets deceived by the wind. I'll give him that. And then just switches off. As though, you know, I don't have to play this ball. And I thought it was absolutely ridiculous defending. by, again, two years ago, I don't think anybody would have argued one of the best defenders in world football.

31:05Frank Leboeuf:So it just comes across as a little bit cheap, a little bit untrue. Was it the wind that made his arms come up when he made the mistake? He did. Kieran, wind?

31:20No, listen, I mean, I think once he watches it back, he's obviously going to admit that he could have done a lot better there. I think, for me, you know, Van Dijk's one of those players that he gives off the impression that he's always in control and that's kind of the way he carries himself, it's the way he plays and it's just his overall kind of bravado. I think this is also why he's one of the best centre-backs in the world because he doesn't look flustered and the way he handles himself on the pitch, he's a Rolls Royce of a player. in football no matter who you are though you're always going to face periods where you're not as in control as you think and things don't go your way so you know I think when you couple that with the calm nature that he has it just doesn't look like it comes across as though you know he may not care or something it's similar to like a Mesut Ozil when a lot of players a lot of people used to say the same thing about the way he played but you can't deny the fact that he's one of the best centre-backs the world has seen he's just going through that period right now where things aren't going his way but also you know he's I don't think he's getting the most amount of help from from his midfield I think if you look at Liverpool last season the the midfield were performing much better than they than they were this season I think there's there's holes in there there's they look vulnerable at times through the middle and that always puts pressure on the centre-backs.

32:55So I think you can see that in the way he reacts sometimes when teams are having chances against Liverpool and you can see he's getting frustrated. Maybe he's also frustrated that he's not getting the protection that he was getting before. OK. You know, the thing is with Van Dijk is he may be better next year than this year, but he'll never be back to the player he was. Neither will Mo Salah. And it's for one reason. Age. And when you start getting older and a little slower, as you do, and it's only natural, the brain can still work and try and put you in a position, but generally everything slows down.

33:34And when you start making those mistakes, what you see is, what we've seen from Van Dyke this year, I think, it's just my opinion, is that you start looking to your post and blame. Because you know that you're not able to do the things that you once were. You're not in that control that Kieran talked about. You don't have that level of authority that you had, that sort of positioning through your physicality. And so when you find yourself in bad positions and making bad mistakes and making poor decisions that maybe you didn't 24 months before or 18 months before, players will, sometimes it's a natural thing to try and look to your post and blame elsewhere.

34:11And I don't think it's hard to, I think it's hard to argue, no matter who you are, that Van Dijk hasn't done that this year to a lot of his teammates. We've seen him do it to Kanati, who's made a lot of mistakes. We've seen him do it to Kerkes, who's struggled. We've seen him throw his hands up a lot. And I think that's a consequence of him knowing that his legs are slowing down. And we're seeing it on the other end as well with Mo Salah. And it's unfortunately for Liverpool that those are two of the players that they gave the big bucks to. But those are two of the... I mean, we can talk about Kerkes coming in and struggling.

34:45and we can talk about the midfield. But those are two of the players who are the biggest earners who may have had one of the biggest drop-offs. You know, right, Canati's dropped off as well. But in terms of being a leader and being the goal-scorer talisman up front, you did not expect those two to fall off the cliff like they have. I want to just, if we go to the third goal, Mario, is there any sort of argument here that it's a foul? The third goal, you're talking about the throw-in. Yeah. Like, look, at this moment, when you are that close, you look, we had extra time, guys. You should not even be, you should attack the ball because you know it's going to happen.

35:28Look, and you as, where he's standing, dude, nah, man. Look, okay, that can happen, but you got to go for it. You got to, they bump him a little bit. I don't know if you guys have seen the size of Van Dijk. Listen, I stood next to him a couple of weeks ago. Hey, he is twice the size of me. I don't think anybody can move that guy because he is big. So then how do you explain that happening then, Mario? Your captain is defending. You got back to 2-2. What explains that? How can he not attack the ball as you would expect him to as your talisman? I wanted him to attack the ball. But you know what the thing is, Dan?

36:03I think Van Dijk, like we talked about, like how you guys highlighted certain things. I think there is a lot of responsibility. When the team goes worse, it comes more on his shoulder, even more and more. And I think last season, when you're winning and sometimes have a little dip, it doesn't mind because you know the team is doing well. But now that when the team is not doing well, it's a lot of weight on his shoulder and he has to carry that. And I think sometimes that gets the better side of him because he has to focus on a lot of different things. And then he forgets the things what you expect him to be able to do because of the player.

36:36Like we say, OK, it's slightly less than what he was maybe last season. but he's still for me he's still a good defender and I enjoy watching him but he's got to do those things go and clear that ball you know it's only a couple of minutes left just be brutal and do your job and make sure that everybody knows I'm the captain I'm going to take us out of the heat Anybody see a foul in there? No, it was Curtis Jones was it? It was next time Curtis Jones was marking was it Evan Nielsen? Yeah and he was sort of almost shoveled Evan Nielsen until a little nudge It's nothing more It's a little nudge and then watch what happens when the goal goes in.

37:12Look at the arms up. The arms go up again. If I had a dollar for every time he beat his arms up this season, he wouldn't be sitting here. There's no foul there.

37:19Frank Leboeuf:There's no foul and no attempt to recover at all. And that's the thing for me. Once you get that number of bodies in the box, there is going to be that contact and that nudging. Just ask Arsenal. They do that better than anybody else. So to feel that you're going to get that call every single time and again for me Van Dijk gets a sling nudge and then just shuts off doesn't bother with anything else going on a little bit like the first goal he shuts off exactly it doesn't bother with anything else going around and again you're the captain people are taking those kind of cues off of you if that's what you're doing don't expect anybody else to do any different yeah of course captain who signed a brand new contract who was given what he wanted Kieran to stay to be the captain to be the leader, this would be concerning, isn't it, for Liverpool fans and Liverpool staff?

38:15Slightly, slightly. I think the way Xhaka puts it, I have to agree with him there. I just feel that for him, he's probably looking at it now and saying, OK, we're going to make Champions League. I would think he thinks that they're going to make Champions League. They're not going to go and win the title. and he may have just taken his foot off the gas a little bit after what was a colossal season from him last season. I think the toll that it takes on you to go and win leagues, win Champions Leagues and stuff, I don't see it as so alien that you will have a period of time in the game where you are off the boil.

39:04as it would seem. And I think that that might be the case with him at the moment. So, yeah, I think it could be a concern for Liverpool fans and the club. But at the same time, I can see him reacting to this. And I can see him bouncing back. I think he has that character in him. He has done it before. and those players that develop into world, world-class talents later on in their careers like Virgil did, he's been through many, many things before in order to get to where he's got. He will have the character to turn this round. So I wouldn't be overly concerned if I was Liverpool, to be honest.

39:52I'd be concerned about the top... I would be concerned about Champions League football. Well, yeah. What do you think they live on a consistent run? They were on some smoke and mirrors run before that game. Unbeaten, there was a lot of draws against a lot of poor sides. They did have a good result in Marseille, but as Frank said, Frank Le Boeuf, and they showed Marseille were terrible. Marseille were terrible. And Alisson had to make some saves. I think with the sort of mini-resurgence of Man United, with the possibilities of what might happen at Chelsea, with Aston Villa, with one or two others, and with Liverpool's defensive frailties, there is a question mark about European, certainly Champions League football next year.

40:31And that would be a huge concern if I was Arnley Slott. Because I don't know how that would sit with the board going into next year if they didn't have that Champions League football and the money that comes with that. Newcastle City, Sundan away are their next three games. Just a reminder, ESPN FC has you covered over on our YouTube channel. There you are, there are the upcoming games. 43:26Welcome into the latest edition of Extra Time Craig is here It's like he just appears It's almost like somebody unlocks him from a room or something Right, and then he just appears And then he's here And then he goes away again Back into the room I got all that. Is there room in your room for a Scotsman? Stevie? Well, now that I've heard he's in Orlando in a couple of weeks. I know. I'm trying to lure him in. I'm trying to lure him in. Let's see if there's an extra time question if he wants to hop over and stay with me in Miami. Breaking the cabinet rules of TV here. Do not tell people where I'm going.

44:07Oh, yeah. Why? Because you might get abused there. I'm not off my trip to the panhandle. A few weeks ago. Craig, you're welcome any time, mate. You're welcome any time to Miami. How have you been, Kieran? You all right, mate? Yes, all good, mate. All good. Can't complain. I'm not sweating about the Arsenal at all.

44:27Frank Leboeuf:I was thinking, I want Kieran as my lawyer. That's a problem. Every player who we've criticised, Kieran has come out in a stumbling defence. I know. I was like, oh boy. Did you know that he was Virgil van Dijk's agent? I did not. And Jokeres, apparently. And Jokeres, he loves it. He started off with, I love Jokeres. I know, he's going to come going. Mario, are you in Amsterdam or LA? I'm in Amsterdam. Oh, very nice. They'll get the paper early tomorrow.

45:00We got snow here too. We got snow here too. It calmed down a little bit. It's like Stevie, every time he said something about Liverpool, I remember it used to be, it was always picked up. Yes, it was. He rang them up once, angry about something. It was my fault. Kieran, if Arsenal win the league with their current projected 83 points, which would be the eighth lowest winners total in league history, would they still be deserving? Or fortunate their competitors were also lacklustre, would be the lowest winners points tally since Leicester? No, I can't hear any of this, if they'll be deserving or not.

45:34Of course they will. I think last year Liverpool won it convincingly, but also off the back of people not performing, other clubs not performing. And no one mentioned anything about that with Liverpool last year. So no, I think that it is deserving. I think even for them, they have underperformed this year, even though they're sitting at the top of the table. so you know if they win I think it's just a bad I think it's just a bad year all round to be honest and if I'm being totally honest I prefer watching I prefer watching clubs outside of the top five at the moment you know I like watching Bournemouth I like watching Brighton I like watching Fulham but the top teams I haven't really enjoyed watching let's not have that discussion you went from 7 tell them you went from 7 to 4 I'm worried for him.

46:29From 7 to 4, I don't want it to get too spidey for Arsenal because it will be interesting.

46:34Frank Leboeuf:Yeah. Claires don't care though, do they? No. You just went on the tile. I can't wait for a Crystal Palace film. Come on, Kieran. There you are. Regarding Man U and Carrick, haven't we seen this many times before, Mario? A new manager comes in and does great for about 10 matches then everyone figures him out and it all goes wrong. Why will this time be any different? I think, you know, what he's bringing is like the timing was perfect, right? Because you had a team that was kind of having a manager that wanted to implement so many new things. And I felt like none of the players were kind of locked into the idea of what Omerin wanted to play.

47:17Now you get a new coach, the coach that understands the culture, the history and everything. And he lets players play on the position and give them some freedom and have a certain structure that everybody understands. Great, two good games, but now he's going to play the game, I think it's Leeds the next game that I play. No, that's Arsenal's game. But the next game, what is important, he played two top teams. Two top teams where he can play reactive football. Now he's going to face a team where he has to take charge. And then I want to see what character's team is going to do, because then we have a better understanding.

47:50Because playing against teams that are better than you, it's sometimes easier in the sense of like, I can sit, wait and counter attack. But what are you going to do against a team that are going to sit for you and wait? Mario, another question for you. What's wrong? Just sorted the weekend out. I thought you were moaning because I was going to Mario and not you. What's wrong? No, I'm happy going elsewhere. What are you groaning about? Well, I was just getting up to speed with the weekend. I've bookmarked 10 o 'clock on Saturday. What weekend? Saturday. What's happening 10 o 'clock on Saturday?

48:18Wolves-Bourdes. Oh, there you are. Kieran will be... You can watch it with Kieran over soon. Together, sit there. This is what you want, isn't it? Wow, look at this. What's going to happen to Wilbs?

48:36Mario, how can Odegaard as the captain of the club always be the first player to get subbed off when the going gets tough? Shouldn't the captain be someone that will be there on the pitch for the whole game and inspire the team in difficult situations like Declan Rice? That is exactly, I agree. I don't understand why he takes him off. It's probably because he feels like his team is unstable and he feels like I need to put more energy or more drive in it. But that is your captain. He's supposed to be the guy that leads that line. But that's why, you know, okay, he had the injury, came back. I think he's up to speed now.

49:11So that could not be the task. The only task for me would be is that he then has his doubts and he feels like, okay, I got to secure and maybe close it up a little bit. And don't have... Because Odegaard, what he's good at, he can open things up, but sometimes it can also look very risky. And maybe he wants to take that out and say, like, okay, let me go safe and try to just win the game or play it out.

49:32Frank Leboeuf:Can I have a snarky response to that? You can have a snarky response. Normally that's my job. Except for Odegaard, because Marino's better from set pieces. Oh. If you're a captain of the ship, Shaq... Sorry. The captain of the ship doesn't leave halfway through, does he? No. Goes down with the ship. Absolutely. Doesn't get off when the going's getting tough. Exactly. So you would have Rice as captain? Would you change captains? Does it make a difference who captain is? Surely you need to motivate yourself? I don't think it makes a huge difference, but I would. I think Declan Rice or even Williams to Labour, to me, more in that area, have more leadership skills than Martin Oligar.

50:11No, I mean, you mentioned just then about, is it important having a captain? and I think Mikel has that take that there's different types of leaders. Erdogan might not lead in terms of his voice and character and things like that, but as a player, he's definitely one of the players that drives the team forward and tries to make things happen. So, you know, I think bringing him off, you know, you still have leaders on the pitch. You have Declan Rice, you have Gabriel. I don't really see it as much of a concern, to be honest. To me, the driver... That's my lawyer there. That's my lawyer right there.

50:54Money well spent. He's saving that. Kieran, you have won the white flag. You have won the white flag, my friend. You are honestly... Do you disagree with me? When I come in your way, I'm bringing it. Do you disagree with me? What did you say? Anyone? No, I don't disagree. But I love you. Declan Rice is the guy that drives this team, I think. Right. He's the biggest driving force in what they do from the middle of the park, and what he does on the field. I don't think there's any doubt about that. Do you need a lawyer, Shay? You seem to be in search of a lawyer if you think that's something to a…

51:29Another one. Right. Kieran, this is for you. I get a finger and a till again. Again. I say again. I get a finger and a till in the first place. All those IFAB deals used to go in these dodgy meetings. Ask the next question, Dad, please.

51:46Frank Leboeuf:I've never heard the word till in a long time. It's like Stevie yesterday going, I was looking at my bank book. What's a bank book?

51:58Frank Leboeuf:What was the word? What was the word, Kieran, come over? Oh, I wrote it down, submaximally. Submaximally. What did you call it? I'm out playing submaximately at the moment. I know, when he first came on, I thought... I looked it up. I think submaximal is a word. Okay. I was shocked. Well, yes, I think Kieran did. He would be the best shocked. He just threw that in from nowhere. Okay, Kieran, this is for you because you love him. With reports from ESPN suggesting Arsenal are in a summer move for Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez, does this signal the end of Victor Xhocarez's project? How would Alvarez fit into Mico Arteta's tactical system?

52:42I don't think it's the end of Victor Giocares' project, no. I think he's only been there for a year. We have seen signs. I don't think we haven't seen enough signs. What are you talking about? We have seen signs that he's in contact.

52:53Frank Leboeuf:Just leave my lawyer, Lord, please. If you bring Julian Alvarez. My lawyer's doing his thing. Already, Jesus is starting ahead of you. Once Kai Avertz comes in, he's going to be there at the top of the tree. Giocares is going to be third. You bring Julian Alvarez. Leave my lawyer. Let my lawyer stay. How can he... I object. How can he have such a love for Xhoceres? I think if we go back in the live show, he said when Havertz is fit, I'd have Havertz playing up front. I object. What's going on? What's your first goal on you? No, no, no. I just like him. I would have loved to have played with a player like him, to be honest.

53:30I think he's a bully. I think he's a bully, and I think it's just not happening for him right now. Would you have him or Julian Alvarez? I would have Julian Alvarez purely because he's done it in the Prem. Because of that experience. And we don't have time to wait. It's been a long, long time. So Xhokares will be a bust then? Yes, very sub-maximal. Whatever Elvarez is. Sub-maximally. You look up sub-maximally. Xhokares is a bust. I'm a dictionary. What are we doing with? Some on the back. With the reports that Kane will sign an extension Shaq with Bayern. You did Bayern this weekend. I did.

54:11Frank Leboeuf:And they lost to Osborne. Curse you are. Do you think that he should return to the Premier League instead to see if he can win that elusive league title and break the goal record? He's won a league title. Who's he returning to? A team that's going to win the title. He's fine where he is. Well, he won't get a game at Arsenal for the job.

54:35Frank Leboeuf:Yeah, yeah. No. My short answer is no. Final question for you, Shaka. Your first experience with snow, what was it? Do you remember? Yeah. I went to Canada with my mom, I think. Telling to think when I was, I was probably 14 or 15 years old. It must have snowed in Trinidad and Tobago before. What? You just got Stevie on us. No, what? What do you mean? When's it going to snow in Trinidad and Tobago? Sorry? Why is it going to snow there? That was my question. Well, it's more of a statement. No. Well, yeah, I'm saying, I'm just saying, has it ever... I should have phrased it. No, you said it must have snowed.

55:12Never. I can't get my head... It must have.

55:15Frank Leboeuf:Never. It's the Caribbean. Never in the history of Triantibagal has it snowed in Triantibagal. It snowed in Florida before. Okay. Right. It must have. It snowed somewhere before, so it must snow in Trinidad. Are you telling me, right? Mm-hmm. He's not believing you, Chad. You're not that old, but you're not... How do you know it never snowed? It must have snowed during the antebago. It must have! Do you have to take this seriously or not? No, it's not even come close. Yeah. Well what? No. Really? Yeah. The lowest it gets to, the lowest temperature it gets to in Trinidad is probably somewhere around...

55:56Producer Mike said it's never ever snowed.

55:59Frank Leboeuf:Never snowed. The lowest temperature it gets to in about 17. That's the quickest he's ever looked at, isn't it? I know, we're still trying to find out who Man United are playing next week. That's it. I'm surprised at that, Shaq. I'm surprised that you were surprised at that. Hey, I don't know if the digmer is seriously or not. Oh boy. Shaq, take crack to your country, man, because he needs to fight. You know, different kind of food, give him that. No, I mean, I love the cricket. You know what the way there is down in Trinidad? Pot. Sub.

56:39I bet he never uses that phrase again. I hope he does. I hope he does. Please, Kira. ESPN FC will be back tomorrow to look ahead to those big Champions League games. 16 games all playing at the same time. Who's going to finish him?

56:52Frank Leboeuf:I love them games that were on mid-table. Yes. Yeah. Those games in the Champions League are great. I'm looking forward to Villarreal versus, is it Kairat? It's Kairat, yes. They'll be looking ahead to those games tomorrow. Those are great games. Should we check it out? Mid-table ones. You ready to check? Yeah, I am. You are. Mm.

57:19Two teams, one cup. The primetime stage is set for the TGL presented by SoFi Finals, Los Angeles Golf Club versus Tigers Jupiter Lynx. Keep up. It's playoffs. Tune in Monday, March 23rd, 9 p.m. Eastern on ESPN2, and Tuesday, March 24th, 7 p.m.

57:34Frank Leboeuf:Eastern on ESPN and on the ESPN app.
