In short
ESPN FC debate on Arsenal’s 4-1 top-of-the-table win over Aston Villa, plus follow-up discussion on Chelsea’s 2-2 draw at Bournemouth and Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Wolves.
Guests
Frank Leboeuf (former Chelsea defender; discusses Arsenal/Villa and Chelsea coaching/rotation); Jürgen Klinsmann (former Germany/US coach and striker; focuses on psychological moments and striker chances); Stevie Nichol (former defender; emphasizes Arsenal’s response and Chelsea/United issues); Shaka Hislop (former goalkeeper; gives title-race percentages and critiques consistency).
Key claims
- Arsenal answered doubts about “putting teams away,” especially after Rice’s absence, and dominated after adjusting to Villa counter-attacks; Odegaard had his best game; the win is a psychological statement for the title race.
- Chelsea’s dropped points at home reflect excessive rotation and lack of defensive compactness; Enzo Maresca faces mounting pressure if results slip.
- Man United’s lack of character and defensive frailty left them unable to turn a winnable match into three points.
Notable examples
- Arsenal scorers: Gabriel, Zubimendi, Trossard, and Gabriel Jesus; Odegaard’s through-ball leading to Zubimendi.
- Chelsea: long throw-ins leading to Bournemouth goals; Cole Palmer penalty; Enzo Fernández stunner; Justin Kluivert equalizer.
- Man United: Joshua Zirkzee opener (26th) and Wolves equalizer just before halftime; Wolves ended a 11-game winless run.

0:34Hello everyone and welcome into the latest edition of ESPN FC as we get ready to round out 2025 in style. And speaking of style, I'm Alexis Yunus joined by Stevie Nichol and Shaka Hislav. There's only one place to start today and that of course is the Premier League because there was a top of the table clash between Arsenal, the current leaders and Aston Villa and the Gunners came out very much on top. absolutely thumping Unai Emery's men. Four goals to one. Center-back Gabriel scored the opener on his return from injuries. Zuby Mendy got a second, and Gabriel Jesus curled in a fourth after Leandro Trossard's third.
1:13And here's a look at what that result means for the Gunners. They are five points clear of Manchester City. Manchester City will be playing away to Sunderland on New Year's Day. As for Aston Villa, they are in third. All right, let's welcome in two more experts today. We've got Frank Leboeuf, who is back in his sauna, in his chalet, somewhere in the Alps. And we've also got Jürgen Klinsmann joining us as well. But let's start things off, Stevie, with Arsenal, because you guys were talking a lot about it yesterday. You said that recently we have been piling on the questions about Arsenal, and they needed to answer them today with this type of a win.
1:51So are all those questions answered and out of the window now? Well, yes, and the biggest one we had was can or will Arsenal be able to put teams away unlike what they've been doing recently? And they gave us the perfect answer today. 4-1, beg your pardon. Feels like 4-0. And so, yes, the questions were answered. You know, I think the first half, the only problem Arsenal had in this game was for the middle three without Rice figuring out how to stop Aston Villa from counter-attacking. and it took them probably half an hour to figure that out. And so for the next hour, once they'd sorted that out, this really was all about Arsenal.
2:29They completely and utterly outplayed Villa in the second half in particular. And Odegaard, for me, had his best game for Arsenal this season, no question. I mean, the little ball he plays through for Zubimendi, it's world-class, it's perfect. I said in the highlight, the pace of it was perfect, where he put it was perfect. and it's not an easy finish but Zubimendi had the easy bit. So yeah, this was a superb performance from Arsenal and yes, the questions have been answered today. Shaka, you agree? Fully, fully. And the cliched six-pointer at the top of the table. Arsenal, I shouldn't have made the point for you last week or two of Arsenal's inability to win by more than a single goal up against a Villa team who have been in incredible form.
3:15You wanted to see how they respond. And the question then, the question around Arsenal over the last couple of weeks was, was this Arsenal going through their blip? Winning by a single goal, but this is their blip. And I think this is worth a whole lot more than the cliched six points to this. Because this is a marker. This is an absolute beating. And you can hear almost the other side of it. Had Oli Watkins taken that chance in Lyon, maybe we were having a different discussion. but he didn't. And from there on in, I don't think you can question how good Arsenal were, how dominant they were, how good they were finishing in and around.
3:56What? In and around Aston Villa's box. So from there on in, I think Arsenal, as I say, put down a marker. It's three points on the board, cliched six-pointer. But against the league's form team, this kind of performance, four goals in it, it says a whole lot to everybody else, including Manchester City. Well, we know that I'm not sure if Frank, knowing that he played for Chelsea and Jürgen, who has his Spurs hat on sometimes, would have enjoyed this win as much as the Gunners. But Frank, let me start with you. Statement win from Arsenal and again, some magic from Gabriel that I'm sure they're very happy to have him back.
4:36Yeah, sure. Even if the first half I was questioning his fitness because he just came back and he wasn't the Gabriel that I have known and I've seen being very the top of the top. And the first half wasn't really clear for me. Saliba was there covering sometimes his mistakes. But also you have to understand that Declan Rice wasn't also in the middle of the park. On the other side, he didn't have camera for Aston Villa. Aston Villa lost to Nana at the beginning of the second half. So he maybe explained why Aston Villa fall down like crazy. Yes, if you look at the score, if you look at the way they played the second half, Arsenal were outstanding.
5:18But you have to look at the first half. You have to look at the way they played at some point, at some times. And I'm not as enthusiastic as my two colleagues in the studio. I think they deserve to win overall. Nothing to say. But it could have been a different story if Fulana wouldn't have been injured and went out at the beginning of the second half. So, Arsenal did the job, nothing to complain about, credit to them and congratulations. But, you know, I'm not that convinced, you know, like Stevie and Shaq have explained. Oh, all right. Well, let's find out from Jürgen before we let Stevie and Shaq back in.
5:55Jürgen, what about you? Are you that convinced?
6:00Well, I think it was an outstanding second half of Arsenal. And they proved the point. And these games around Christmas, New Year's, as Shaka knows and Frank know really well and Steve, obviously, these are very crucial psychological moments around this time in the year. And when you have a statement win like today against Aston Villa, who became kind of closer and closer and competitive for the title, then even better. I mean, the first half was even. Aston Villa was kind of waiting for their chances. They had some small ones. But what Arsenal then showed and proved in the second half was outstanding.
6:40You know, the passing sequences, the commitment that they have, the aggressiveness that they showed. And, yeah, they grinded them down. And I think even in that amount with four goals, it's well deserved. So these are now moments where you want to kind of differentiate yourself from the opponents. You want to make a statement to your big, big opponents, mainly Manchester City, obviously, and tell them, listen, we are ready here. We are ready to win the title this season. Stevie, what do you have to say back to what Frank was saying? No, I don't think you can get... You can't really talk about the ifs and ands and the bots.
7:20I mean, if Jocky Reyes had taken his two chances, I mean, it's as simple as that. David Raya, I don't remember David Raya making a save in the first half. You know, for half an hour, when they were on the counter, Aston Villa, you're watching it going, you know, they look capable. Yes, Saliba made that one great challenge. But again, as I said, Jokeres, in my opinion, if you're a world-class centre-forward, you're scoring two goals. Yes, he gets ahead of the defender for the one we showed, and he should have scored. And I think he should have. And I'd love to know what Jürgen thinks about this.
7:52Jürgen is a centre-forward. That first chance that Jokeres has, you're a header. It's a clear header. nobody's challenged them nobody's bumping them and it was a weak attempt over the bar he should at least have got it in frame and I think when you're paying 60 to 70 million for a centre forward you've got to put that in the back of the net Jürgen what do you make of what Stevie's saying about Jokeres? No absolutely there was some chances when they come along you've got to utilise them you've got to take them and that's what he will think the whole night tonight that if I would have made that goal then things look a little bit different.
8:29But he didn't. You know, a couple of weeks ago, we were kind of discussing the impact of Kai Havertz. And a lot was being made in the press about his pending return, et cetera, et cetera. And I think Frank was making the point, which you agree with on the face of, that Kai Havertz wasn't the solution last year. And as a matter of fact, Kai Havertz's inability to play that number nine is why Arsenal went out on board Giocares. But the truth is, Giocaz really hasn't offered a lot. And I'm being kind since his inclusion. Now, you could actually make the argument that Michael Marino would have scored those headers, which we've seen.
9:08Makeshift center forward he may be. He has shown at least some prowess in and around the box when he's got on the end of things. But because of Rice's injury, he has to drop back and play in midfield. so even that was not an option. So while I take Frank's point about Villa not being as good without Onana on the park, I think if you look at Arsenal and the adjustments they had to make because of Rice's injury and the chances that they were able to create, they were the best of the two teams. And in my opinion, fully deserving of not just the win, but the scoreline. Jurgen, just back on Jokeresh, Like how concerning are his struggles to you?
9:52And do you feel there's enough time, enough personnel around him so that he can eventually come good in this team? Oh, absolutely. He can become good in this team. The timing is always difficult, you know, for a forward. You know, if you don't score goals, you get criticized. You know, they come up with all sorts of stories. And the only response that you can have is scoring. Start scoring, start making your point and connect with your teammates and connect in the games but also in training sessions and do the best you can do. Absolutely he can convince people and he can make a difference. He has the talent but now it's the mind that kind of guides him, the psychological aspect of it.
10:43And yeah, you got to give him the opportunities and sooner or later he will break through. Frank, of course, we're halfway through the season just about. And when you look at Arsenal's closest rival right now in Manchester City and you look at their big man up front, which is Erling Haaland, and just the destructive form he's in, and you know that you need your big man up front, Jokeres, for Arsenal to also come good or at least challenge like Haaland is. Do you feel like this could be a concern down the line for them in terms of the title race? It could, but they have to do with the people that they have chosen at the beginning of the season.
11:19And he still works. And we can see Trossard has been very good, worked scoring and assisting. Saka also, even if today, you know, the first half I didn't really see him. Odegaard seems to come back to what we know about him and the quality that he has. But don't forget that Eze was on the bench. Again, Rice was in there. So I think they are complete. And Zubimendi, Mourinho as well, have shown their talent and the performances that he can get. But no, I'm not worried. I mean, Gokeres has been chosen against the way that Arsenal plays their football. That's insane, in a way, because they don't use strikers.
12:05And we have seen Jesus struggling, Ava struggling, and now Gokeres struggling. Manchester City is in the other side of the coin, where they really choose to use Alain at the end. They used to go around like Arsenal do right now, but now they've decided to change their mind and use him more. And that's more effective. So maybe it's hard for good players right now to fill up the hole that they have in a way that they don't use really as a striker. And that's complex for him and complex for Ateta because otherwise they will have to change the way they play. And Jürgen, how do you feel the title race is going?
12:47Of course, Arsenal five points clear of Manchester City just right now. City to play away to Sunderland on New Year's Day. That could be an intriguing matchup for this title race. I think that's what we want to see. We want to see a title race that is close. And I think we're going to have it. I mean, Man City will not kind of shy away from anything. They will chase them until the very last day of the season. and this is what we want to see. At least two teams competing until the very end. It will be interesting to see now how Aston Villa reacts to that big defeat today. But there's so much still to play, and especially when the European competitions come into play already in the middle of January.
13:31They're going to go back into the Champions League action. So who is able then to joggle all these different competitions on the highest level possible? So this will be an open race, hopefully, until the very end of the season. Well, we know that we live and breathe by our Don Hutchison's percentages on this show, but our Shaka Hissop loves to give his percentages here and there. But I'm sure you're taking percentages when it comes to your power ranking. So have they shifted a little bit now, Shaka, after what we saw today between Arsenal and Villa? Well, they've shifted in that last week, I said Villa had a 10 % chance.
14:04And I think I said Arsenal 50, City 40, and then adjusted out to 47, 43 or something like that. That's too many math. Villa Villa Villa now well you have to cut Villa and probably saying 5 % chance is kind so that's the adjustment so I don't see anybody else outside of Villa making any kind of a run so Villa's at 5 % now all of a sudden you're thinking Arsenal are up to up to 50 City 45 something of the sort right now Arsenal are in pole position. City are chasing them down and we've made the point time and time again that it's a whole lot easier to chase than it is to lead. So we see whether that kind of is telling for Arsenal in the second half of the season.
14:55We know how good City are in the second half of the season, or at least every version of City bar last season. We know how good they've been in the second half of the season. And again, the question will continue to come up and will continue to be asked can you win a Premier League without somebody scoring 20 or 30 goals a season. We know City can. That, in the form of Haaland, there's an alternate number nine. Liverpool do it a little differently. With Mo Salah coming in from the right-hand side, we know how many goals he scores. And right now, I mean, you know, Alexis, we were watching the game today and Gabriel scores.
15:27And the first thing that comes to my mind is, has Arsenal scored more goals? Has Arsenal's back four scored more goals than their front three? And that was a genuine question. not shade or any kind of, that was a genuine question. Now, can Arsenal finish a league like the Premier League while competing in all the Cups, including the Champions League, without that striker who's living off half chances? Now, time will tell, but right now, history is on the side of the teams with a 30, 40 goal a season striker. Stevie Xhaka does bring up a good point there in the sense that You did say that Arsenal was able to answer a lot of our questions with this win today against Villa.
16:09But there still is one or two questions there in terms of are they ready to be champions? Do they have enough for the next half of the season? Have they convinced you 100 % in that? Yeah, I still think they're favourites. I really do think. I think this is a two-horse race. I didn't really think Villa were in this race. We don't know the middle ground with Villa. They started the season, they were horrible, and then they went on this amazing run. We don't know what their normal, what Villa's normal. We know what City's normal and Arsenal's normal is. And that's why we can sort of, we can nitpick at City and Arsenal.
16:43Because there's little problems. And that's why the two of them for me are in the title race. And yes, Arsenal for me are the favourites. I think they've got a better squad. I think they've got more talent. I certainly believe there are more goals in Saka. There's more goals in Trossard. Oh, yeah. And I think it's... I keep sticking up for Jokic Rez. I'm beginning to turn the other way, but I kind of agree with Jürgen. It's probably a little bit early to really get on top of him because it takes time. It does take time, but patience is not something we have often in football or in the Premier League.
17:24But, Frank, I know you, unlike Stevie, had a lot of hope for Unai Emery and Aston Villa the way they were going. It is only their first loss in 12 games, So where do they stand with you now? You don't think they're in the title race anymore? Because I think you were giving them a chance. I was giving them a chance and I was giving them like 20%, you know, and at halftime really I said, well, I can give even more chances, you know, and go for 40, 30, 30. But, you know, the result says something and it's a statement. And I agree with Xhaka. It's hard to give a chance to Aston Villa. So yes, 5 % is quite nice to the Villains to maybe win the Premier League.
18:08Because I really think that they have the players to do something good. But now they are six points behind, 18 goals difference, I think. And so it's like seven points. Even if it's still a long time since until the beginning, the end of the game, the Premier League, I think it's going to be hard for the Villains to catch up Arsenal and follow. And I only think that Manchester City can maybe try to do something. But, you know, last year we talked about the Premier League and the level of the Premier League. And, you know, that's the same question that I want to ask to the guys, you know. Do you really think that the level is the level that we used to know?
18:50The level has dropped. And I'm not saying that Arsenal is going to win it by default like Liverpool did last year and didn't have any contender or any duels with anybody else. And they started to lose games in March and kept their title and won the Premier League. But we questioned last season the Premier League. I, again, want to question the level of the Premier League because I don't see anybody having a level that I used to see in like 10 years from now. All right. Well, Frank, we do want to talk about that, but our producer, Luis, says that I need to move on because we're going to talk about Chelsea in a little bit.
19:34Because she's a custom pie. Oh, he got cut off because she is a gooder. Indeed. All right. Well, head on over to our website and take a look at Transfer Talk. Remember, the January transfer window opens on January 1st. That's New Year's Day on Thursday. And there are already a couple of interesting transfers that seem to have been agreed upon. 21:43Chelsea were also in action today as they drew 2-2 with Bournemouth. It was David Brooks who gave the visitors the lead, but then a penalty from Cole Palmer and an Enzo Fernandes stunner put Chelsea back in the lead. However, a goal from Justin Kluivert ensured that Bournemouth walked away from Stamford Bridge with a point. All right, Frank, you know I'm going to have to go first to you on this one because yet again, more points dropped at home from winning positions from Chelsea. What gives? I don't know. You know, I would have rather talked about the question that I've asked to the guys, or whatever, the producer decides.
22:22But really, I'm so disappointed. I mean, you play against Bournemouth, you have two throwings and you can see two goals in the same way. You don't play the best teams. I mean, what Enzo Mareska is doing, really? Because you play Bournemouth, you think you can play with the B team? Why you have Rhys James, Neto, Joel Pedro and some others on the bench? I mean, you're not in a position where you can have the choice of the king, where you can say, OK, I'm going to pay my beating because it's going to be enough. I'm sorry, you cannot. Balmer is not at the top of the top, just came back, except his penalty, we didn't really see him.
22:59Garnaccio has twice, in a two-throwing, was slipping on the far post. Now we're going to miss Caicedo because the referee, all the referees, see fouls when there isn't. And defensively, I'm sorry, the four at the back today, they were weak. so I was disappointed because you cannot you can lose against Aston Villa maybe but against Bournemouth the way you play now it's impossible Yeah Jürgen what were your thoughts on the game because we talked about it again on the show yesterday that it was such an outstanding stat to see how many points Chelsea have dropped just overall from being in a winning position and majority of those points coming at home Yeah obviously those Those are the must-win games, especially that time in the year.
23:49You expect a little bit more. I mean, especially the first half, it was very entertaining. They were trying to surprise Chelsea over and over again. The two goals, as Frank mentioned, both long throw-ins from Semenyo. If he throws those balls into Haaland, that will be interesting to see then, what comes out there. But, I mean, if you're Chelsea, you cannot afford to get two goals like that. And now, you know, you miss these two points dearly going forward. These are the games that you really need three points urgently. And, yeah, that makes you angry at the end of the day. Stevie, your thoughts on the pressure mounting now on Enzo Mareska.
24:34He didn't do a post-match press conference. We do understand that he is battling an illness at the moment, but still, overall, he must be feeling some pressure. Well, I think he is. But I don't think he's helping himself. I mean, it's just... Every time Chelsea steps on the field, you've no idea who's playing. It's change after change after change. I mean, that battle... You know, they lost two goals from the throw-ins, but an open play, particularly in the first half, they could have lost three or four others. But you've got three of the back four who were thrown in today. Just so many changes, too many changes.
25:10And then the way they play, it's so open. And when you play against a team like Bournemouth, who will play open attack football, regardless of whether home or away or wherever, then you're asking for trouble. And in some ways, they're lucky they didn't lose today. But again, the biggest thing for me, watching today, is more changes. It's just getting old. It's change after change. And eventually, he's going to have to get an 11. And then trust them that they can play five, six, seven games without making all these changes all the time. Otherwise, they're just going to go up and down and up and down.

25:47And no consistency. And the roller coaster continues. Shaka, you seem to agree with Stephen. I do. You said Maresco's not helping himself. He's not. And because the question then becomes why the changes, right? It's not as though we're in a Champions League week. And even so, the league is your bread and butter. Take care of your league. and you look at the league table now, all of a sudden, Chelsea are fifth behind Liverpool. Three weeks ago, we really thought Anastas Lott was in danger of getting the sack, talking about being under pressure. Now all of a sudden, it's Liverpool who are in fourth position ahead of Chelsea.
26:22So all that pressure that slot was under three weeks ago, you totally understand Mareska may be under. Take care of the league because I don't understand the changes and the need for them. Sydney, at this point, when you're not playing champions, and then again, your league is your bread and butter. I have to say, and while we rightly criticise Maresca for the changes, again, I mean, watching today's performance, Liam De Lappe, he really didn't offer anything. And you almost feel João Pedro, who prefers to maybe sit in that hole is being thrust into this position of playing as a number nine, which is not his best position, but Chelsea's best option in that position.
27:09So you just look at this team and it just is so full of holes. That, you know, again, given Chelsea's spending, given that this is Maresca's second season in charge, you would have thought he'd have a better grip on that by now. So, Frank, yet again, a lot more questions about Chelsea. if you're playing the blame game now, are you blaming it solely now, at least these recent performances on Maresca or the players or the board? Well, the players, well, Maresca first, and I agree with the guys, and I mentioned the fact that we don't know the best 11 at Chelsea because he makes so many rotations that we don't even know who's going to play every game that we see Chelsea.
27:54So, yeah, Maresca has to be blamed. I guess the players who play and today the players who play haven't been performance whatsoever and I was waiting for much more from Iliam Delap from the back four as well he had to change had to put sometimes you know what is his name Malogusto on the left side okay but it's not enough, it's never enough it's not compact I don't feel the chemistry. We talked about last time the fact that they don't have experience. And Stevie made a very good point last show where he said, well, no experience. It's time to come because they are not like 20 or 20, 21. Some of them are 25, 26, so they start and they should be more experienced.
28:45We don't see that. So it's overall a problem that they have to solve in the dressing room. But there is one person who decides for the individuals, and that's the coach. And for me, the rotation doesn't work. Yeah, Juergen, we're just looking at that very damning stat of Chelsea that they just have one win in their last seven Premier League games. If this continues, do you see Enzo Mareska surviving at Chelsea for the rest of the season? Oh, I definitely see him surviving until the end of the season. But I also think that obviously they have to turn things a bit towards the better way and utilize their chances better.
29:23I mean, I look back today at the game, 12 minutes before the end, and so Fernandes had a huge chance to make it 3-2. If that ends 3-2, we have a completely different discussion. And so they have to find ways now in these grinding times over Christmas, New Year's, and then going into the second part of the season where they get their results right and climb up in the table. I mean, they are fifth now. They're in the chase for the Champions League spots. And, yeah, but I don't see that there will be any problems now for the coach in this moment. All right. Well, I'm sure Enzo Moreska has a lot to think about in terms of any more recruitments Chelsea can afford in the January transfer window to add to that already very large squad.
30:07Anyways, we'll be taking your questions over on Extra Time. We've got Frank, Schaka and Stevie on call to answer them. So make sure to tune in on YouTube.

31:34Manchester United hosted Wolves at Old Trafford, and the woes continued for Ruben Amarin's men as they drew this one 1-1. Joshua Zerkski gave the host the lead in the 26th minute, but Wolves found an equalizer just before halftime, and that's exactly how the game would end as Wolves managed to get their first point in 11 games. All right, Premier League top half standings. This is how it looks for United. They are in sixth position, level on points with Chelsea, but they blew a massive opportunity to go ahead of the Blues and even Liverpool, at least for the moment. So, Stevie, let's talk about it, shall we?
32:14Because I know you could not take your eye off of this game. And as you described it to me, you said good point earned for United, right? Yeah, well, you know, if they stay up, then they'll look back at this point and say this was it. Yeah, this was just Manchester United. I mean Peak I mean if you If you hadn't If you knew nothing about the Premier League And you'd sat down for the first time ever You would think There's not much between these two teams I mean that's That's the honest truth I mean going forward There was nothing exciting about Manchester United And certainly from a defensive point of view And all the stuff that Amarine's been going on about changing from five to three to four.
33:03Well, four apparently now seems to be the way to go. Well, he didn't look very comfortable defensively either. So, yeah, it's, I think, I think once again, we've just kind of seen that this is the level that Manchester United are right now. And until they make more and better signings all over the field, then that's just what you're going to get, I'm afraid. Well, as we said that, this is, This point actually ended an 11-streak, losing streak rather, for Wolves-Shaka. But as Stevie said, of course, Man United probably will want to do some reinforcing in January. But they are currently without a couple of players, especially because of AFCON.
33:43Do you sympathize with them a little bit with that? Could you blame that? No, this is Wolves. Wolves will go down, I feel fairly confident. Wolves will go down as one of the worst teams in the Premier League with their points total this year. Even with this point. And while, to your point, Alexis, no Bruno Fernandes, no Mbwemo, but Ruben Amri made the point that without those players, you are asking others to step up, to take some responsibility. Now, you mentioned that had Manchester United won this, they would have gone above Chelsea. Had they won, they would have also gone above Liverpool, albeit Liverpool would have a game in hand.
34:20I know I'm a firm believer in the psychology of these games. You have an opportunity to get yourself into the top four at home to arguably, time will prove me wrong or not, the worst team the Premier League has seen. And you squander that opportunity. As a matter of fact, you quite easily could have lost this, given some of Wolves' chances later on. And that just, again, speaks to this team, a lack of character about them, about who they are, and their ability to get a job done. The fact that we're still having conversations around, and to Frank's point earlier about whether the league is as strong as it had been in years gone by, now of a sudden we're talking about this version of Manchester United possibly finishing top four.
35:11And I know where they finished last season, but this is arguably as bad as Manchester United as we saw last season. Yet they are here with a chance, a win or two, and Robert the Green are being in the top four. I think that speaks volumes to them. But mostly point on today's game, it speaks volumes about a lack of personality within this team to really excel. Jürgen, what about you? Given the fact that we know how deep Manchester United's problems are, how surprised were you with this result? I think we're all surprised about the results and it's like like Xhaka says rightfully it is a question of character it's a question of you know the spirit of the locker room I mean you as a manager you go crazy there out on the sideline you know because you need to see urgency from your players you need to see kind of almost desperation to to to score another goal to get the three points against Wolfen and Wanderers who has been a disaster this season and will go down into the championship.
36:19So this drives you, as a manager this drives you crazy, a situation like that. You question everything. You question your environment, you question the people that work around you. That's not only the players, that's the entire locker room. All the people that work day in, day out with the players are to be questioned you know are they driven enough are they you know uh do they have character enough are they desperate enough to get three points every week in week out and uh yeah i mean we always kind of tend then to to make the the manager responsible for everything but i think you know in a game like that today where you as manchester united you know need to bet just prove to your point and get three points no matter how you get the three points but you get the three points so that's where you now look at the whole bigger picture and say you know maybe within this entire club there are some some things that are just simply not right because it's impossible not to get the three points today.
37:20Alexis you know you know as a coach that's the one thing that drags you down you know you can lose games but if you lose games and you can see the fight and the desire and the will, but they just keep making mistakes and things are going against you and maybe some teams are just better than you. But when you're sitting on the sideline watching your team and you don't see the desire and you don't see the energy to try and be better, that's what drags you down as a coach. That's the worst feeling ever. Frank, you know, you spoke about the inconsistencies that we see at Chelsea in terms of formation, etc.
37:59Looking at Manchester United now, we've seen Ruben Amarin tinkering with his lineup and how he puts out his 11, whether it's a back three or a back four now. And I remember the time where we were pretty much criticizing him that he was not being flexible, that he was just sticking to his system whenever it wasn't working. Now we see him being flexible, but it's still all going wrong. Yeah, it does. And I don't see if there is any solution. And I think the first maybe thing that they have to do, they have to stop that the Manchester United that we have now is the Manchester United who belongs to history in the Premier League.
38:36That's over. That's another era. And Manchester United is not the club that it used to be. Yes, in terms of history, it's maybe the biggest club in the world. One of the biggest clubs in the world. But we have to stop to think that Manchester United is capable of doing anything right now. And it's been a while that we thought that. So you have the players that you deserve. You have maybe the coach that you deserve. You have maybe the whole locker room that you deserve. And you have to do something about that because it doesn't work. And it hasn't worked for years now. And I think if there is somebody who might be know what's going on, it's maybe, you know, the old players.
39:20Some players who have non-success. And maybe the Roy Keane, maybe the David Beckham. I don't know. some others like that, Peter Schmeichel. And maybe they should talk to know what is the solution and what kind of medicine they should take because it doesn't work at all. And the player maybe that they are hiring are not at the level that people are expecting. An exorcism. I think that's exactly what the entire club needs. A whole exorcism. Call up the Vatican. Let's schedule it. But anyways, let's have a look at the bottom of the table. And despite what all the guys are saying, That's not where you will find Manchester United, but that is where you will find Wolves.
40:00That pretty much tells the sorry tale of their season so far as they are rock bottom with three points. But it's also where you will find Spurs. They're in 13th, just outside the top 10. But things have been rough so far for Thomas Frank and his men. Jürgen, I know you know Spurs very, very well. So just keen to understand what you think of Thomas Frank and how he's been managing Spurs thus far. Well, very, very difficult from the outside. Obviously, we are fans, we are watching the games, we are judging the results, and we hope obviously they are far higher up in the league, in the table of the league than they are right now.
40:40But if you look at the points, they are five points behind Chelsea and Man United, so it's maybe not as kind of negative as we think when you're 13th in the place. And they're doing fairly well in the Champions League. So there's still a long way to go in the second part of the season. Difficult from the outside, you know, his work to judge because obviously the media make their own stories up. And he looks at his things, you know, from the inside. I obviously hope now for a far better second part of the season, especially, you know, in the ranking of the Premier League. It will be tough to get up in the top four, even if it's still possible.
41:19It's still possible, but it's a way to go. Well, as you said, the January transfer window starts on Thursday, opens on Thursday, and we've already heard the news that Brendan Johnson could be on his way to Crystal Palace. But just on that vein, Juergen, how would you like to see Thomas Frank strengthen this Spurs side in January? Yeah, I hope for him that he gets, you know, whoever he has in mind, that he gets that opportunity to take that player. I don't know who he has in mind and which part of the team, if it's a forward, if it's a midfielder, if it's whatever he needs. And I hope that the management there is with him and gives him that opportunity.
42:01But obviously, it's going to be a race for the best out there in January. And not only Spurs will go into the transfer market, there will be other teams digging a little bit deeper and figure out a way maybe to get one or two real enforcements for their squad. but I think, you know, from the outside looking in, it's very difficult. Brent Johnson is, for me, a player that obviously has a huge potential, has an enormous amount of talent, but he's not a proven goal scorer. He doesn't give you 20, 25 goals a season, so it will be interesting to see if they move him on. All right. Well, Juergen, thank you so much for joining us on ESPN FC, but before we let you go, we have to find out how you're going to be partying and ringing in the new year.
42:49What's the German way of doing it? Well, I have more the Californian way of doing it. That means we all look to New York at 9 p.m. Pacific time, meaning Californian time, and we call it a day when the ball drops in New York. So I'm not big into the New Year's Eve. Oh, I love that. He'll be in bed by half nine. You're going to be celebrating New Year at 9 o 'clock. And then go to bed. You should just move to the East Coast. If you're living on Easter time, you should just move to the East Coast. Come chill with us in Bristol. It's cold. It's cold. Five inches of snow outside. All right, Jürgen.
43:32Good for you guys. Thank you so much. Thank you, guys. All right. Well, guess what's back in January in the New Year? The FA Cup. That's right. On ESPN. And plus, here are a look at the fixtures. Things kicking off on January 10th. Manchester City in action against Exeter City. But Spurs have a tough one against Unai Emery's Aston Villa. Charlton up against Chelsea. Manchester United against Brighton. Don't have much hope for that one. Pompey against Arsenal. And Liverpool's Stevie on January 12th against Barnsley. Yep. Home draw. That's all you need. That's all you need. Quick time out. some breakfast intel you want to know about.

45:37Welcome everyone to Extra Time. If I can find the questions. I don't, Shaq, I'm not well. I'm not well. I'm not well. I'm not well. I've just been holding it together for the show. But you know what? When all you know is pain from Manchester United, then I don't know, I don't think today's results against Wolves makes a difference. Especially funny when you're hosting when Man United play. Yeah. There's just a different vibe in the air. Screaming. There were a couple of screams. But funny enough, majority of those screams didn't come from United attempts at goal. It was from the Wolves attempts at goal.
46:19That was so much fun. But it's okay. My sanity's hanging on by a thread. But we're going to go into extra time. Look at Frank. Frank's the only one that genuinely has concern for me. No, he doesn't. He does. Stop it. I know you all love it. All right, the first question is for Shaka. Shaka, which will we see first from you? A picture of you at Carnival in Trinidad and Tobago. That's kind of easy. Or a picture of you wearing a Spurs shirt? Pretty easy. Can I just say that there are a couple of Spurs shirts already at Shaka's house? Yes. My son gave me a Spurge shirt for Christmas last year. As a joke or genuinely?
47:00As a joke. My son is a Spurge fan. He thought it would be funny for me to have a Spurge shirt. So, while I do have a Spurge shirt, and I wear it on occasion, I will not be photographed in it. You wear it on occasion? On occasion. Oh. I would say which occasion, but I wear it on occasion. All right, so we will probably get a carnival photo of Shaka first. Every chance. Do you know what? That's all I can say. Every chance. Every chance. And there'll be no shirt on. Exactly. There'll just be shirtless showing his six-pack. What about if I have a sports shirt on? At carnival. You're in carnival. That's just another dimension that Andrea did not think of.
47:42You can't do that. Let me just, I'm not sure how much you'll see of me in February. Fair. Here in... In studio. I'm just putting that out there. Oh, carnival time. Put that out there. Best time in the world, a bit more than Christmas. All right, next question. Guys, pro or con, FIFA have opened the door to Arsene Wenger's new offside rule. What's the offside rule? What's the new offside rule? Oh, daylight between... Yes. It's not... Oh, let me actually read it because he does say it in the question. It says a player will only be offside if he has fully passed the last defender, so it won't be decided based on a body part anymore?
48:22I am against it. I believe in good defenders. And I think... The thing for me is the suggestion around this law is that it takes away a lot of controversy. It won't. You're going to have just as much controversy. You're going to have just as much people looking on video replay. but just from a different perspective. That's all. So it's not going to change the debate or the argument or whatever it is. It's just going to give strikers an advantage. And I think there's value to good defending. And I'm going to be on the side, especially as I'm on set with two defenders here. I feel pretty confident that they'll see it similarly.
49:11I was going to say, speaking of good defending, great defending, Frank Laboge, what do you think about this? I'm against. I'm against and I would love to defend the French guy, Arsene Wenger. I think he'd become English and try to go the other way like everybody in the rest of the world. I mean, you will have, you reverse, in fact, you reverse the problem where people say, oh, there's still one ankle or one, you know, one foot in and no, it's not, it's offside. So, well, he's not offside. So, you will never solve the problem anyway. So, stick to that. Try to be better. And don't try to change anything.
49:56So, no, I'm not convinced. Stevie? Yeah, I'm in a voice. 100%. Forget about it. Forget about it. Forget about it. All right. So, no fans all around. Next question, shall we? Will Enzo Mareska still be Chelsea's manager at the end of the season? Of course, I did ask Jurgen this question, I believe. He says that he feels like he will survive. Frank, as a Chelsea man, what say you? No, I'm not a former coach, so I don't have to defend the coaching union whatsoever or what Jürgen is trying to do. No, I don't think Enzo Maresca will be the manager at the end of the season if he carries on like that.
50:39So we don't know what's going to happen to Chelsea. It can be better. but if he keeps on doing that, wasting points, especially at home, no, he won't stay. He will be. He will? Yeah, will be. What if he's not in the top four? Final answer. What if he's not in the top four? At the end of the season. He'll be there at the end of the season, that's what I'm saying. He's not going to get sacked before that. No. We know patience runs thin at Chelsea. Siri? If he finishes the season outside the top four, then what these guys who have taken over have shown us they're not going to be standing for any failure.
51:20And that would be a failure. So if he's not in the top four, then he might be, technically, he might be there at the final whistle of the last game. But if he's not in the top four the following day... He gone. He gone. He gone. He gone. He gone. who's on an eternal vacation, loves to say. All right, next question. Villa. I'm not complaining, like I said before. Because you're dropping a month-long vacation in February. It's because of anybody's time off. Must be nice. All right, next question. Villa found space behind Arsenal in the first half, but couldn't find the net. What can Unai Emery take away from this result?
51:59Frank. Well, the first half, the first half was very convincing. And yes, they didn't have a very specific chances to score, but I think in the game, in the middle of the park, they were much better than the Gunners. And he has to keep on working with the guys that he knows, like McGill, Onana, and Kamara, when he's going to be back, to make sure that he reinforced the middle of the park. But, and he has to work on what went wrong. I mean, we didn't talk because Xhaka is also, if Jürgen cleans mind on the coach union, Xhaka is, of course, on the goalkeeper union. But really, I was disappointed about what Martinez decided to do in front of Gabriel.
52:49You just punch the ball and you are still nil-nil. And it's maybe another story. We'll never know. But coming from him, who I think is the best goalkeeper in the world, I was disappointed because he started the mess. And so maybe trying to not do the same mistakes next time, like they've done, losing the ball in their own side and counter-attack with other guards. Working on that, not trying to be too clean, like Digne on the third goal from Trossard. Work on some stuff which worked in the first half and the other stuff which didn't work in the second half. Anyone wants to chime in? Listen, I think, well, from an Unai Emery perspective, you'll be beaten by a better team on the day.
53:39Yeah. It's quite simple. Quite simple in that regard. And let me put it like this. As good a run as Aston Villa have been on, who had a good performance today against Arsenal? Who stood out? I can't think of anybody. Who stood out for the right reasons? I can't think of anybody, really. I just think that on the day, Arsenal were that much better. I take Frank's point, first goal is always important. It really is. Had Erle Watkins taken his chance, had Emi Martinez done better from the set piece, maybe we're having a different discussion. But when you see Odegaard throw the pass like he did today, when you see Trossard with that kind of finish, you just say, listen, Arsenal were better.
54:26In Unai Emery, like all coaches whose teams are counter-attacking sides, they all have the same problem they have to take their opportunities when they come along because they're basically giving the opposition the ball the opposition is going to have the ball more than they are they're going to have to defend properly and then when they counter they're going to have to take their opportunities and if they don't then they're not going to score goals and they're going to encourage the opposition to push them back so you kind of you've got to take your medicine when it goes wrong. And that's kind of what happened today.
55:03And it was going wrong against Chelsea for an hour. So, yeah, that's what he's stuck with. I love how Xhaka said the first goal is important. Unless you're united, then it often doesn't matter. Next question. This is for Football Americas, Xhaka. Xhaka, do you think Ricardo Pepe will be a good replacement or would be a good replacement for Raul Jimenez at Fulham? That's some heavy boots to fill. Yeah, it is. But Ricard Pepe, I think, has certainly started to establish himself in the Indira Divisie. I think for a long time, he carried the kind of reputation as being an impact substitute. I think you've seen a different side of him over the last season, maybe season and a half.
55:46But to your point, Raul Manez, those are big shoes to have. I mean, he is some finisher, particularly for Fulham. Can he take a step up? I guess there's only one way to truly find out. but I think he is Pepe, Ricardo Pepe is a far better player today than he was maybe two years ago maybe he gets that chance but again until he's there and in the Premier League and understanding the physicality and the pace of it you can't just say yeah he will be Stevie you look like you almost wanted to say something and get in on this football I was thinking about what Jimenez does for Fulham you know take the goals away Jimenez is a real key cog in the wheels that force up front that holds the ball up and lets everybody join in.
56:34I'm not convinced that Ricardo Pepe is particularly great at that. Yes, he's gone from, as Shaq has said, the guy coming off the bench to scoring, to starting and then scoring. But I'm not... I wouldn't like to turn around and see because I haven't seen enough of him. But it doesn't strike me as a guy who is involved that much other than in the penalty box. Let me say this fully with my Football America's hat on. Yeah. I think Ricardo Pepe is behind Florian Balogun in the pecking order for the US Mets national team. And right now, I'm not sure, again, as much as I made an argument for Pepe there, I'm not sure that Balogun is good enough or prepared enough or improved enough to make an impact back in the Premier League.
57:22to kind of using Balogun as a reference point. Again, until you get here, you have to prove it. But if I'm using Balogun as a reference point, maybe not yet for Ricardo Pepe. Yeah, Raul Jimenez, different gravy overall, I think. Different gravy. But can I just say, I wish our producer for Football Americas Beto wasn't on a never-ending vacation as well because did Stevie just give us a little audition to being on Football Americas? The way he broke it down. Love that, Stevie. The way how he talked about Raul Jimenez, how Pepe just is not that good of a ball holder there. Yeah, I didn't even know I was doing it.
57:58But it just comes naturally. All right, make a note. And from what I understand, there'd be an opportunity during the month of February. Oh! I've heard that there may be an opportunity. Well, it's funny that you say that, Shaka, because going on to our final question, Radvin wants to know if we all have any plans for 2026 and Stevie on Football Americas, which is back in January, by the way, could potentially be one. Courtney who? Me and Alexis. Yeah. We're going to be Alexis. Do I get a say in this? No, no, no. You had your say and it was perfect. I think you would have stopped in brilliantly speaking about contact football.
58:39When I'm at home, I do as I'm told. But I understand that's the way it is. You're telling me I'm going to have to do that here now as well? Yep. You're going to have to join us sometimes where we kick off at 11.40 at night. Oh, I'll be sleeping. I'm just kidding. That's only what we were waiting for, the Liga Mekis games. But Frank, let me start with you. Any plans for 2026? You live the most exciting life out of all of us. Yeah, and it's why I'm just hoping to be happy and in good health. And that would be a very good year. Otherwise, I handle everything. I'm going to enjoy the time being with you guys on ESPN.
59:17And I'm going to be in a play for a year. And I have 100 performances next year. So it's going to be a very interesting year. And hopefully everything's going to go for the best. Frank, are you going to miss the World Cup, Frank? No, I'm going to be around here. I don't know if it's going to be in Bristol or somewhere else. But I'm going to be for three weeks for the World Cup with you guys. Oh, there you go. Spoiler alert. Stevie, any plans for 2026? No. Besides tormenting me? I'd just go a day at a time. God, you sound like such a footballer. Any plans for tomorrow? Let me start. Any plans for tonight?
59:57The only plans for tonight are all well ahead of the schedule. The only plan for tomorrow is waking up. That's the only plan I've ever had. That's a bonus. Don't you have the show tomorrow? Yeah. Okay, so that's a sign. I've got to wake up. I've got to wake up. At least you want to do it for me bed. I'll sit in me bed and do it. Hey. What was that again? We got the close-up on it. Shaka, any plans besides Carnival for 2020? Listen, at this point... That's a pretty good plan, though. At this point, all I can do is echo Frank and say happiness and good health, because Lord knows 2025 is only half of that.
1:00:37Oof. Oof. What a very sombering thought. I know, jeez. But... But... But there's a but at the end. When the 25 is coming to a close. That's all in the revenue mirror. We can slam that door shut. See you later. See you later. All right. Well, that's pretty much it for us on ESPN FC's Extra Time. Oh, look at that. Little Shaka wishing Happy New Year to everyone. That was your opportunity. I didn't know what was happening. I told you the graphic was going to roll. And then all of a sudden, I'm there. Oh, you're waiting for the promo graphic. Yeah, let's go. There we go. Hey, ESPN FC, we will be back tomorrow.
1:01:16Stevie will be back after he wakes up, so make sure to tune in as we ring out 2025 in style. Don't say that on ESPN+. As you know, managing maintenance, repair, and operations is never easy.
