In short

ESPN FC discussion of early-season Premier League and La Liga results, centered on Arsenal’s 2-1 comeback win over Chelsea, plus broader debates about team tactics (Arsenal’s control vs Chelsea’s defensive fragility), Barcelona’s dominance after 5-0 vs Valencia, and refereeing/VAR controversy in Real Madrid vs Betis.

Guests (ESPN FC panel)

Dan Thomas (host), Craig Burley (former player/analyst), Stevie Nichol (former player/analyst), Frank Le Boeuf (former player/analyst), Jan Aage Fjortoft (guest analyst; attended Everton-Manchester United).

Key claims

  • Arsenal looked more mature and controlled midfield; Odegaard “sublime,” and Havertz is a trusted match-winner.
  • Chelsea are entertaining but lack defensive organization, especially in a three-at-the-back shape; they’re fragile after losing the ball.
  • Arsenal’s only missing element is “killing the game” by better possession when leading.
  • Barcelona’s challenge will come in Champions League and away games; Valencia offered little resistance.

Notable examples

  • Havertz goal and dummies/flicks; Raya saves; Emi Martinez upgrade vs Sanchez.
  • Everton-Manchester United ended 2-2 (late Maitland-Niles equalizer).
  • Real Madrid vs Betis: Mbappé penalty saved; VAR offside/encroachment debate around Manuel Barthas.

0:01Early morning on a Manhattan sidewalk, a shooting caught on surveillance video. It was an assassination style killing and everybody saw it. A new podcast series from ABC Audio and 2020 goes inside this captivating case. I'm ABC News legal analyst Brian Buckmeyer. Listen to Burden of Proof, Luigi Mangione, wherever you get your podcasts.

0:32Welcome to the latest edition of ESPN FC. I'm Dan Thomas, joined by Craig Burley and Stevie Nichol. We also welcome to the show, Frank Le Boeuf is with us as is. Jan Arger-Fjortov, plenty to discuss today. But Jan, let's start in the Premier League, shall we? We're waiting for the first real big game of the season. On paper, it looked like Chelsea and Arsenal would be it. And it lived up to expectations. Thrilling game. Arsenal in the end, deserving the 2-1 victory. coming from behind to make it a perfect start to the defence of their title? Yeah, I do understand that you start with me after Martin Erdogan's great performance today.

1:07But it was also a great performance from Arsenal. I think it was a great football game. And I think we went into this game and thinking, will Chelsea have gone closer to Arsenal? Remember, there were 33 points behind them last season. I think they have. I think Arsenal will have a good, sorry, Chelsea will have a good season. But I think Arsenal were excellent. The way they came back, the way they controlled midfield. A lot of talk about the top three players at Chelsea. They're not so bad, these top three, for Saka, Havertz, Erdogan either, are they? When Chelsea took the lead, you thought, how would Arsenal react, Craig?

1:44They reacted fantastically well. Yeah, they were. I mean, there had a period in the second half where Chelsea put the pressure on. Raya had to make some saves, come for some crosses, make some decisions. What she did, he was excellent. But I think for the most part, Arsenal had the most control. And Jan is right. Odegaard looked sublime. He looked full of confidence again. It wasn't just these little tippy-tappy passes. It was intricate passes that were putting people through and slipping, creating Arsenal chances. So they were fantastic today. But it showed a little another side to Chelsea as well.

2:17They look as if they're going to be stronger this season. But I think Arsenal just edged it. When we were talking pre-season about who's going to win the league, Everybody said Arsenal. And on this evidence, everyone's going to be right, aren't they? I think so, yeah. No question. I'm not sure I like the way they finished the game off. Yes, they did see it out. But it looked to me as though they decided they were just going to hold it on. I would have preferred to have seen them still going forward. But at the same time, I mean, you can't complain. You know, Emi Martinez showed today as well what a good signing he'll be for Chelsea.

2:51Because he made some big saves in this game. You know, there was two or three saves. that I'm not sure Sanchez would have made. And this would have been a different ball game. But yeah, Arsenal, no question, a better side than Chelsea. Chelsea's good to watch, but they're not going to win the league playing the way they do. No, but I suppose... We'll talk about Chelsea in a moment, Frank, but just overall, Arsenal and the quality that they bring and that swagger they seem to have after winning the title. Yeah, I found Arsenal more mature than Chelsea. is where, you know, maybe you can see the difference offensively.

3:26Defensively, we have to talk about Chelsea. They don't know where they have to stand. They don't know how to cover each other. They don't know who's going to get out to put some pressure. It was too easy. Every time they had the ball and it was perfect for Martino de Gaal, on top of being, as Craig says, sublime. The guy had all the time in the world to make choices. And that's not possible. I was upset, I have to say, against Wesley Fofana in the first half where he didn't know where to stand. He wasn't following his Kai Averj, for example. Again, they didn't talk to each other. They were four at the back, but they didn't know what to do.

4:01Offensively, I enjoy Chelsea. Of course, nice to watch how to play. I think Kai Sedo is missing a lot in the middle of the park to bring a little bit more of aggressiveness because we don't have that aggressiveness. Rich James is a good player as well, but he doesn't show the leadership that we need. Those players are very good offensively, but defensively they have to work better and they have to look at what Arsenal are capable of doing. As soon as they lose the ball, they know exactly what to do and where they have to stand, where they have to stay, and after they have to work together. But that was a great game of football, for sure.

4:35We have to remember as well that still no Gimenez starting, no Timber, no Saliba. I'm sure there's a few others, but these are key players, these are big players and yet Arsenal still look super strong. You have to give a little shout out as well to Kai Havertz up front, clearly the preferred choice over Xhokeres because he's got more quality about him, if I'm being honest, he's more subtlety, he's more of a threat and I think we saw how cumbersome Xhokeres was when he came on with some of his touches, but Havertz not only got his goal, but some of his little dummies, the little flicks. So he, as you well know, like a lot of us, some of us have felt that that's been a slightly weaker point for Arsenal.

5:20But he has had a good start to the season and he gave them. And sometimes when you're playing a three at the back, as the boys have been talking about, in terms of Chelsea's defence, sometimes you try to get three at the back and players that haven't all played together, it can be confusing. But if that's the way he wants to go, that's fine. But it's more difficult I think it's more difficult to get solidity when you're playing a three at the back with two wide, two wing backs than it is with a back four. It's easier to work on the back four as a unit to be more solid. But if that's the way he wants to do it, and he did it at Leverkusen, I understand that, but he switched now and again.

5:55If that's the way he wants to go, fine. But they're all going to have to be on the same page, which at times they will not today. When you play with three at the back, you absolutely 100 % need the guy in the middle to be in charge. he needs to just cover everybody tell everybody where to go the two on the wide areas if they need to go out he needs to tell them to go out he's basically just he's the puppeteer, he's the puppet master basically and when you have three at the back who are not quite sure of positioning then you need to be strong in the middle of the park and Chelsea's not strong in the middle of the park and if you look at Chelsea's side and you look at this Arsenal side Arsenal's got strength all the way through it.

6:37The one thing Chelsea don't have, they don't have any strength right through the middle of the team. Craig brought it up. Kai Havertz obviously needs credit once again. He's not a forgotten man, but is he someone that kind of arse don't appreciate enough, given the fact that we're calling out for a number of nine and Jorquez comes in, but he just continues to deliver when he needs to? Yeah, I think the great thing about Kai Havertz is that he's a 1-0 scorer, a first goal scorer for a team. He's always done that. He's a match winner. He's always there yes he's not your top number nine but he's very very trusted uh at arsenal of course and every coach that have coached him love to work with kai harvats and it's i mean the martin urdigo goal i mean solis will get the assist but it's all down to him his little dummy that's what he's doing and i think he's very appreciated by his uh his teammates having said that the goal stevie i'm not 100 sure i agree with you are that martinez on that point was looking very very good because I think Martinez is a much better goalkeeper than Sanchez, if I may say.

7:42That's definitely true. But I don't think that Martinez looked good on the first goal, so I just want to get that in so a bit away from the Kai Havertz, Dan. Sorry about that. Where's Xhaka? I think you've forgotten. I think you forgot about that. It's gone through the second half. Absolutely, 100%. It's gone through the defender's legs. That's the one thing and the one reason why I don't believe it's Martinez's fault. Gone through the defender's legs, doesn't shake too late, gets a hand on it and doesn't keep it out. But regardless of that, he made three other fantastic saves in the game. I mean, there's no doubt he's an upgrade on Sanchez, but I think the fact that Villa were bringing another keeper in and were happy to let him go is telling you that they felt his performances were starting to dip.

8:27He's getting a little bit older, not quite his mobile, but he's still a smart signing if that's the only one you can get late on to come in and be a better keeper who's making less mistakes, whether we debate that was a bad bit of goalkeeping or not. Sanchez just makes far too many. Again, it might be a busy season for Emi Martinez with the way Chelsea are going to play and how open that game was, which was great because we thought it was going to be a bit stale. It wasn't. The first half in particular, it was you attack, we attack. And that made for a really good game. and it actually brought more out of Arsenal.

9:06The fact that Chelsea came out and tried to play and tried to attack and tried to be open made Arsenal do the same. And I think when we see Arsenal in that guise, we see a better Arsenal. They can play. They have got pace. And they can attack teams. And that, at times, at the end of last season, although they won the league, they were poor in the Champions League final, that was the frustration that this kind of game is in Arsenal. And when they play like that, They are very tough to beat. You mentioned it, Frank. There's a lot of positives to take from a Chelsea perspective, the way they've started the season.

9:38They're certainly a lot more fun to watch than they have been for a very long time. Defensively, Stevie brought it up. There's three at the back. You need your centre-back to be the leader amongst that. Is this something that Xavi Alonso can make click or is it something that he's going to have to abandon at some stage? Well, he has to make the people click because, I mean, that was kind of awful. They don't know what to do. I think Emiliano Martinez is going to be upset soon. He doesn't say anything because he just signed. He doesn't want to be impolite maybe, but he's going to start screaming very soon because that's impossible.

10:12And especially, again, for Fana, he doesn't know what to do. He has on top of it the help of Hato on the left side, which is not the case for Hachembong, who couldn't count on Neto. It was more Lavia trying to help. but yeah they have to try working better and they have to talk to each other it's like they don't talk for me lacroix has to be with maybe colwell the people who are gonna do something for the others because the others are kind of lost maybe an experience maybe not good enough maybe too young i don't know but that has to click if you want to do something you know and chelsea has proven that when they used to win titles that they had to be good defensively and when you're good defensively, then you can approach something.

10:57They're very good offensively, but as soon as they lose the ball, they become very fragile. And that's the aspect of the game that they have to improve because otherwise, yeah, they can threat any club, any team, anytime. But it's so open defensively that at some point, it's unbearable to see that. They say, well, you cannot lose the ball, otherwise you're in danger. Jan? Well, yeah, I think when you set out the strategy and we know that over the years when we see the champions or teams who are improved just to go out there and think that your strategy is to score more goals than the opposition it sounds good but you have to have a solid defense and we've seen that and I agree with the boys here we've seen that but Alonso it took some time at Leverkusen as well to find that he was very pragmatic at Leverkusen so I think we will see that during this season that he could change thing around.

11:53But I still, though, think that, yes, we are very, we have a negative on the defence of Chelsea, but they're getting closer. I mean, I said it to start, how many 33 points behind them last season? And I think that they also contributed today that we saw a great, great game. I was at Everton and saw Everton-Manchester United and then in the car watching this game. And I mean, that was two worlds. I have to be honest with you. I mean, the intensity, the energy the going forward stuff. Yeah, passion. To be fair, today I interviewed Carrick and I just landed today. I said, how would you summarise this game?

12:33I started there. But yes, absolutely. But I think I agree with you, Craig, that Arsenal are better when they open up a bit. There are so much quality in the team. So when they use it as they use today, I even think they can get better. And I think that opens up. And that openness helps the likes of Odegaard and the Ezzies and Solis and Saka. Because when teams try, and it looks, teams will sit in against them in the Premier League. There's not, you know, some of the teams that are not very good and there's quite a lot of them will sit in. But when the bigger teams come to play or try and play, be it away from home at Liverpool or Man City or wherever it is, Man United, and teams try and play, Arsenal can play that game and that opens it up, that space for Odegaard to go and do his thing, for Saka to go and do his thing.

13:24And Arsenal, I feel, are better. You know, when Gimenez comes in the side and the game's open like that, he'll spray the ball about for fun. And I said it last year, Arsenal can win. They're a team, one of the reasons they're the best team in the Premier League at the moment and potentially Europe is they can play several ways. You can have a fight with them, they can sit in if they want, which is not always pretty and they can play as well as anybody pretty much when they fancy it. You know, Arsenal were really good today but I would... The great and the best teams see the game out in a different way than Arsenal did today.

14:02You know, you're talking about opening up. You don't necessarily have to be open when you're 2-1 up but you can possess the ball better and kill the game. Now, is it because of the way the game is today? the rules that you're not able to kill it the way teams used to. Because that is the only thing I see that's missing from this team. Because at the end of the day, Raya had to make a save. It was a save from Esteval that I think he should have made. But he still had to make a save. They could have dropped two points because they sat back and because they decided to hold on to what they had. The best teams don't do that.

14:39The best teams keep the ball and kill the game. if they could do that, man, what a team this would be. Man, what a team. Man, what a team it would be. Yeah, man. Jan and Frank will be with us later on in the show as we're reflecting on the aforementioned Manchester United result. Just a reminder, ESPN FC with you throughout the week. 16:08Barca, still perfect. 5-0 over Valencia on Sunday. We saw a brace for Lamin, Yamal, Firmin, Lopes, Rafinha and Pedrion on the score sheet as well. Let's get some reaction. We have a man of Harvey Elliott, of course now playing for Valencia in a moment. But first, Hansi Flick. I would like to ask you, how can you explain that we've been talking all the summer about a number nine, a pure nine, that it was the main target, the main objective of the club in the summer transfer window and without a pure nine you have scored 17 goals in four games? Yes, but it doesn't change our thoughts. We need normally a number nine, a real number nine.

16:54So this is clear. But at the end, we have huge quality in the offence, also in the midfield. Everyone can score goals. How do you explain the performance? What happened? Why did it play out the way that it did, do you think? I mean Barcelona you know they're simply incredible being one of the best if not the best team in the world for for years some incredible players and you know they simply were better than us today so then four games four wins 17 17 I told you that earlier yeah I wasn't listening Two lost two. 17 goals, two conceding. We saw Sid there chatting to Harvey Elliott and Sid, they're pretty good.

17:52Yeah, they are pretty good. And of course, Harvey Elliott was confronted by reality at Valencia and there are problems for Valencia to work through. But in terms of the analysis of today, his starting point, at least, is the team we're up against are really fantastic. One of the things that I thought was interesting, Dan, today was that this was a different kind of Barcelona. We watched the previous games in which they just burst through teams. really aggressive, really direct, lots and lots of pace, flying into the space behind teams. Today, that wasn't really the case. Instead, this was a game all about control and about possession and the movement around the edge of the area.

18:21They were very rarely able to run into spaces behind. And really and truly, you know, at 3-0, even at 4-0, even at 5-0, you're sitting there thinking, this is a low score because it doesn't need to be any higher. Barcelona had this game so under control that you got the feeling that if early in the second half someone had said, listen, you have to score eight today or you lose a league title. They would have got to eight. Not bad. Yeah, well, we said that straight off the back of the live game that it could have been easily seven or eight. It was cruise control. It was walking about in the second half, five-yard passes, not even a challenge coming in, not even close to a challenge from Valencia, who for the most part, apart from the first half, had given up.

19:05So it's a difficult one to judge because we know that Barcelona have a lot of good players, a lot of talented players that can open you up. But is it the fact that they are super smooth and silky at the moment or is it the fact that the others haven't really put up a challenge? It's a difficult one to judge. You might look at Real Madrid and say, well, they've struggled a little bit. They certainly struggled in that game against Betis. They struggled early on against Espanyol. But Barcelona are a slicker outfit than them. and I'm just looking at some of the other teams in La Liga and thinking, where's the challenge?

19:42Where are the dropped points going? And I'm sure there will be. I'm sure there will be, but where's it coming from outside the top three or four teams? Where's the challenge to Barcelona to put them under a little bit of pressure, to ask them more questions? Rio did a little bit, a little bit for a little spell in the last game. But nobody's put a concerted challenge over an hour or 70 minutes to this Barca side. They've pretty much had it their own way from match day one. And that's kind of worrying for the rest. It'd be worrying for Real Madrid. But as good as they were today, you've got to balance that by saying that this Valencia side, particularly in the second half, were pretty pathetic.

20:22Sid, what's your take on it? We know Valencia are poor, but what about where this challenge is going to come from for Barcelona as the season progresses? is? Well, I mean, what Craig's getting at there is what I was saying as well about Harvey Elliott's view of it. This is about Barcelona being brilliant, but it is about much more than that. And I agree with Craig. I thought the response from Valencia today was basically non-existent. Now, I think we do have to put that into the context of a fan base that's furious, of a squad and a manager that don't see eye to eye, of a collective sense all around the place of things going wrong.

20:55And I think that meant there was no reaction. Now, that's not to say that Valencia will be terrible all year, But it is to say that when they find themselves a couple of goals down quickly, then they just had nothing to give. Now, in a broader question about the challenge, I guess we perhaps have to ask ourselves a question. Is there a challenge for the league title? Probably not. There's probably two teams, maybe three in the league title. Are there grounds where Barcelona will drop points? Now, I think maybe the biggest challenge to Barcelona may well be those away games after or before big Champions League nights against teams that say, OK, you can have the ball, but we're going to look to try and make the most of the space that you leave behind.

21:31I think one of the reasons why they've bought Rodri this year is because they actually want to segue towards more control and not be caught on their back that often with that high line. But I would agree that I think this is a league title this year in which Madrid and Barcelona are going to be a very, very long way ahead of everyone else. Sorry, Stevie, away from that, you look at the players. We discussed at length Lamin-Yamal and his start to the season wasn't quite bringing it. We talked about questioning his attitude. He's back very much on form now. Yeah, and, you know, what the boys have been talking about, that makes it easier for somebody, regardless of whether it's Jamal or anybody else, to get their form back because they've got so much of the ball, so much time with it.

22:12It just makes it easier. And just to jump on the back of what Sid was talking about, you know, the games before or after the Champions League. if you're turning up and beating teams four and five all the time it doesn't take any energy out of you you can do it week in week out it doesn't matter how many games you play because if teams are not laying a glove on you you're going to have plenty of energy left for playing Champions League and then those games that Sid's talking about how do they react afterwards so in terms of Barcelona they couldn't care less whether they get any competition or not they just want to keep turning up and keep bashing teams It actually might be.

22:50Real Madrid and Atleti, particularly Real Madrid, might put up a challenge this year. They should put up a challenge. They need to put up a challenge, really, with Mourinho going back in there. But it could be the Champions League where, ultimately, we judge where Barcelona are. When we get into maybe the deeper stages of the Champions League, like they've been when they went out to Inter and one or two other scenarios. because at this moment in time, and Sid's right, maybe off the back of some of these games, then we'll find out more about the squad and the squad depth. But that could be their barometer to where they are against the Bayerns, the Arsenals, the PSGs and teams like that.

23:30Because at this moment in time, and it's very early in the season, but at this moment in time, the games have been, I hate to say it, the games have been too easy for this Barcelona side. Any last words for you, Sid, before you head out into the Valencia nightlife? If only it was the Valencia nightlife. There's actually quite a lot of noise outside the stadium still because the fans are so furious with the club and they're protesting outside. I think the other thing is to say, I guess, that the really biggest clubs, the ones that are playing the best football, and this is probably applicable to Arsenal, it's certainly applicable to Bayern Munich, it's probably applicable to Inter Milan.

24:03I don't want to make a kind of a blanket answer here, But I think that the Champions League will be the measure of probably all of those teams, with the possible exception of the Premier League ones. But, you know, we were talking about this, weren't we, in the show a couple of weeks ago, that you look at the Premier League now and think there's really no one apart from Arsenal that feels like a team that's ready for this. And in Spain, we would argue there's Barcelona and probably Real Madrid, but it's about Barcelona maintaining that level against the teams. It's not necessarily about what happens in the Clasico, but ensuring that you don't drop the points in the other matches.

24:33Good man, Sid. Thank you very much. Long drive back to Madrid, is it? Will you get the train back, Sid? No, I'm driving down the coast and then driving back to Madrid tomorrow. So I'm driving about half an hour south of here, and then tomorrow I'll be driving back to Madrid. What's going on in half an hour south? Well, I'm just finishing off my holiday, in theory. Oh, OK, all right then. I'll be back in Madrid tomorrow. I'm sure it can't wait. Thank you, Sid. Much appreciated. Just a reminder, Monday Night Action continues in La Liga tomorrow, and then a full round of matches for you next weekend, including Real Madrid against Ravikano on the Saturday and Levante against Barcelona on Sunday.

25:14Everton-Mansal United was the early game in the Premier League and it would end 2-2. United opened the scoring and Buemond with a nice goal to break the deadlock, but a fantastic strike from George. Maybe dodgy goalkeeping from Lemons would make it 1-1. Speaking of goalkeeper, Pippford would have wanted to have done better with Sesko's effort, but there was surely nothing anyone could do about Maitland-Niles' strike, which would see Everton get a late, late equaliser. A brilliant goal from him as it would finish 2-2. As we mentioned, Jan Agafjortov was at the game. Jan? Yeah, it was one of those games you didn't know what to expect.

25:50The Manchester United team beating Ipswich 5-2, Everton unbeaten. it's been a very turbulent week it's unbelievable what's going on in this week at Everton David Moyes is now down to one striker one left back, one right back 18 outfield players so I think I spoke to him after the game he was talking a lot about characters and he needs characters and he needs great goals and that George goal I agree with you maybe the goalkeeper should have had that one but a 20 year old with a lot of experience from Chelsea really is a bit underestimated experience great goals and then Maitland-Niles in his first game I felt that was a bit at that age that we can say that is a bit Mathieu Letizier when he's using his inside of the foot in the far corner so that was a brilliant end to the game and I think David Moyes based on the fact that he's been furious all week, he has said he hasn't talked to his owner for one and a half year and then he will be happy with this start of the season.

26:53There is a team They've got some young kids like Armstrong and George now getting the goals. And I think they have to build on that. As for Manchester United, I think that this was an OK away game. They controlled part of the game. And Boomer made a good goal, although the Everton defenders looked very passive when he came in there from the right with his left foot. So all in all, I think they'll be pretty happy. But of course, Manchester United being 2-1 up and overtime of overtime is always a blow to any club. Yeah. United fans will be cut, won't they? Yeah, they should be disappointed. Listen, Everton, you know, I was talking about Moyes-Watton characters.

27:35This Everton side changed for me when Grealish came on because for an hour they were absolutely, they looked as though they had no idea where to go or what to do. Tyreek George was the only player in an Everton jersey who actually wanted to go forward. The rest of the time they were, I don't know what they were doing. So Manchester United for an hour absolutely had the cigars out and they should have punished Everton in that first hour because Everton were just standing off. So if I'm United, I'm not disappointed. I'm looking at this team and going, why didn't you go and just... Everton were there for the taking and they just didn't do it.

28:17And if they want to be in the top four, they can't go to places like Everton. and play the way they did. You can look at this and say it's a point away from home. You know, it used to be a tough place to go, Everton, Man United. It was always hard for them. But that's gone. I think they can. I think you can go to Everton and get a point and still be very much in the conversation for the top four because of everything else that's going on. Right, and that's really my point. The way that Everton played for an hour, Manchester United, if they wanted to be in the top four, should have gone and buried this team because they were absolutely asking to be beaten.

28:49But they didn't do it. and then even when they went ahead they kind of slackened off even more thinking they were just going to cruise and of course you do that, things change and they end up losing two points getting a point at Everton at the moment it's not like a it's not a good thing for all the reasons that Jan talked about Moise is furious they're selling everything they try to do their business very late in the window and they've got the pants taken down, they've got nobody up front they've got a thin squad they don't have real quality Grealish apart, kind of, maybe Dewsbury Hall at times, but certainly Grealish is, you know, obviously he's won the Champions League and the Premier League and he's up there and the rest are kind of well below that so when you look at the issues at Everton United really should have been putting the foot on the neck, and Carrick said in an interview after the game Stevie and I were watching it, he thought they played really well and created a lot of chances and they were like, well not quite sure, he controlled the game because Everton are not a very good side, you know, in terms of possessing the ball.

29:54But it wasn't like Pickford was all over the place in the first hour, having to make save after save after save. So they had a lot of the ball, but they should have put this Everton team away. And then United started to drop deep and got caught, as Jan said, in overtime, in injury time. The Sesco goal goes in. I don't think Pickford was great for that. But it's 2-1. The game's dead and buried. And somehow you leave yourself sort of open again. you get pushed back, ball's not cleared properly and it is a great finish from Maitland-Niles. I'll give you that. But they really shouldn't have been in that position against this Everton side that are very thin in terms of the squad, very thin in terms of quality and I kind of think it tells you where United are at the start of the season.

30:37The game Yarn was at, the Hull game, where they got beat. Are they going to be a little week away on the road this year? Kind of looks a little bit like it at the moment. Yeah, that's a fair point. It's kind of where United are isn't it Frank? Yeah the thing is I realized during the game I said where is Bruno Fernandes and I saw Everton trying to deal with a guy with a main threat I think for Manchester where he got one chance when he gave the ball for the I think it was for Luke Shaw for the cross on Sesco's goal and he had that volley fantastic volley on the first half but it was quite invisible because Everton made sure that it wasn't too free.

31:18And that's why it's a difference. So I was really disappointed by Manchester United's way of playing, especially the second half. They tried a little bit the first half. The second half, they scored a goal. You say, okay, it's over against Everton. As the guy explained, you know, there are too many players missing. And we didn't see that. We didn't see, you know, a little ship on the field knowing exactly what to do. they drop a little bit and it's when Everton came back and had a chance to equalise and after you have that successful goal and you say okay it's over with the maturity that Manchester had it should be over no disappointed games only one point away against that Everton team no that's that's not good enough you were at the whole game as well as Craig mentioned Jan you do fear for United when they go away from home given what we've seen in these first openers yeah and I think that it's I don't think they played very well.

32:14I don't agree with Carrick there. I think they controlled it compared with the whole game because that was a different game. But I don't think that, well, if you have a look at the Premier League table, no hell is up there. But still, that's not where you compare it. I think that what's interesting when we've seen these two games is that Arsenal is showing that they are good. They're up there. They are offensive going forward and doing well. We've seen Manchester United. I was at Manchester City yesterday. They could have lost or lost points in that game as well. They were not convincing. And Manchester United either.

32:49I think that what we've seen now is that Arsenal is so much above the rest. I mean, yes, it's so easy to say it after three match runs. But that's the background we're having at the moment. And that's why I just repeat that. To go from that game and go and have a look at Arsenal. playing Chelsea, I mean, they're miles apart. And Manchester United were very optimistic before this season. Could that go on? Yes, I think they could still be top four. There is no chance, as it stands now, that Manchester United is even close to competing for the title. How were you and Carrick afterwards, Jan? We were OK, thank you.

33:30Thanks for asking. That's all right. I didn't go in for any passion questions. No, we were very polite to each other. And what's funny as well at Hull, I love when they go back at me. That makes good TV. That's what we love to have, don't we, Dan? Good, because every time you say so I'm negative this year against Man United, we're going to clip it off and send it to their PR team. Exactly. Frank, we're going to let you go for the evening. Would you like to say anything before you leave? Hold on, what? There's nothing more for him to say. No, no, no. I just say that when I watched the game and I saw the Cesc goal and I say it's over, when I saw that goal for Midland Knights, I said, I love that game.

34:12I sent a text to our producer today because I say, you know, you can expect everything from the football and that goal is a pure beauty. And it's why we love football, I think. It's because nothing is settled. Everything can happen. And it's why after 20 more years of retirement, I still enjoy a great football game or a great goal. Producers blocked you. He didn't see it. Real Madrid had plenty of chances in the first half. Conor went off in the second half and were punished as a result as Real Betis would take the lead. Yeah, Troy Clark off the bench. Good save from Courtois, but his defenders were coming out and slightly on their heels.

36:09Betis heading in, hedging the bets, and Manuel Pellegrini gets that victory, I'm sure he fought. Espich was the hero against Espanyol in the opening game of the season. Thought he'd come off the bench to save Real Madrid again, however offside. Yeah, it was a great finish, but when you look back at this first pass, we're going to see Mourinho not happy. there's a foot that ball there it goes in as he's backing in his right foot is in an offside position it's still the same phase of play we're talking seconds he's onside at this point but that's a moot point great finish but this is the correct call from VAR and the referee Real Madrid then have the chance though to get that late equaliser as Vinicius jr.

36:51was brought down here no no question penalty it was a good spot from the referee actually because it just looked from that angle with all the players that had gone out for a corner but you can see the sliding challenge coming in here. There just swipes Vinicius Junior's feet. So Kylian Mbappe steps up, poor penalty, saved and then the rebound is cleared. Now questions about whether or not it's encroachment, the foot is clearly across the line however because it isn't planted he's okay, it's not encroachment, the penalty doesn't stand, to corner instead and Real Betis go on to win by one goal to nil.

37:30We discussed it a lot of course, we were live for that game. We'll talk to Sid in a moment, let's just take a look at the front page of the newspapers after it. First blow, says the front page of Mark, hitting the brakes, meanwhile says Ass. Right Sid, we were a little bit unsure about what the rule was really, to be honest, 48 hours ago I wonder what the clarification has been or has it been clarified in different ways depending who you listen to? Yeah there's always an element of that isn't there I think one of the problems here of course is that there's there's two things happen one is one is a shift in the way that the rule is written and the other is an ambiguity in the way that the rule is written so it used to be that if you're in the air you're not encroaching it was then rewritten to be that if you're in the air then effectively the position of your body is judged as if you were on the floor.

38:21So in other words, Mark Bartscher's body is over the line, is in the penalty area, you would draw a line down and it was as if he was treading on the floor in the area, except for the fact that he has the other foot outside the area. Now by the way, we could probably argue about whether the other foot is entirely outside the area, because of course the angle on the camera isn't perfect to be able to see if it's just outside or even fractionally on the line. But that leads to this kind of contradiction in the rules about, but one foot is planted, so that clarifies, that gets rid of everything else, the rest of it doesn't matter.

38:47But we've just rewritten the rules to say that if If you're in the air and in the area, then you're in the area. So which bit of your body is the bit that's counting? Which bit is trumping the other here? And it seems that I think what will probably happen on Tuesday, now most of our viewers will be aware of this, but just in case they're not, every Tuesday now for the last year or so, the technical referees committee have decided they will choose five or six plays from the weekend's games and talk them through and say whether the decision was right as the way they put it, as a way of educating people in the rules.

39:18Now, instead of being a way of educating people on the rules, inevitably what this has been is everyone going, you see, they were wrong and they were wrong against us. Now, I think they will choose this one because I actually think it's quite interesting. And I think it is quite good if they can educate us and clarify to us whether it's the foot on the floor or the foot in the air that counts. I suspect they will say this was the right decision, not least because, of course, it's the best thing from them to say, yes, our referee got it right. But this may well lead to yet another little rewriting of the rules to try and make it a little bit clearer next time.

39:46They will say it's the right decision because it probably is with the way the rules and the laws are written. My problem is, had that been for an offside, whether the foot's planted or not, as soon as the body's in front by half a yard, they deem that as gaining an advantage. So how is it not gaining an advantage when you're trying to go in to be first to go in to get to your rebound? one can't be true without the other being true if you're gaining an advantage on on on the laws of offside by your body being in front by your head being in front by your shoulders being in front you're then gaining an advantage whether your foot's on the floor or not so i think the way the laws are written that this is correct but i think they're going to have to go away as said pointed out and have a rethink about the laws around this certain scenario because you cannot not be getting an advantage on an offside and a goal being chopped off and you're not getting an advantage on your opponents by doing this very same thing.

40:49We had no idea when this happened because you, I and Stevie, Nicko, were sat here and we said, in 20 or 30 years of playing and covering this game, we've never seen this. Never seen this scenario. I'm sure it's happened. We've never seen it. But I get a feeling this will be, they'll say this was the correct decision, but IFAB we're going to have to go away and look at the laws of the game and how they're written to address this scenario not happening again. Luis Garcia. No, no, no. Nothing to say. I mean, it's true that I heard also what they say about the rule and the indication that if the defeat is outside and whatever it is is an advantage for the defender in this occasion and you can see that the law is not well written and they'll have to think about it but this has been happening for forever and now because we are paying more attention because we have more cameras because we got that time to review what just happened and then allow ourselves to to think in different ways probably Real Madrid fans won't be seeing the same way but it is what it is and the way is right and so something that needs to be changed because definitely in that occasion Barthas is taking advantage for a lot a lot of distance but it It looks short, but in movement, because we see the pictures just right there, but in movement, that's a lot of difference.

42:11And Mbappe should have the time to have a better contact with them all. So we'll wait and see, but that rule probably will change very soon. 43:27Craig and Stevie as well to answer your questions on Extra Time, which is next.

43:39Welcome to the latest edition of Extra Time. Thank you for your questions. What's the percentage chance Arsenal win the Premier League, Stevie, before match day 30?

43:53Percentage of that? I mean, we're only, what, three games in? Yes. Look at the thinking face. Right now, maybe 25 % chance. Really? It's quite high. How many teams have won the league? We've got eight games left. Yeah, that's why I'm saying it's quite high. It's quite high. Really? So that's why I'm saying it's only 25%. No, it's quite high. I say 25%. Oh, you think 25 %? That's quite high. I'd say so. 18 points at that stage. You might be right. Right. You might be right. I'll change that, if I may. If I may. 30? I'll take you 15. 15? Yeah. When will they win it? I've no idea. What are you asking?

44:42I think that's a valid question off the back of that. Well, I've got a crystal ball. When will they win it? Well, we just won't talk about the future at all. You're quite happy to give that prediction. Well, I'm not. You ask me a question. I've got to answer the question, innit? Well, now I've asked you another question. All right, well, give me a second. Then I'll think about it. Why are you getting so grumpy about it? Yeah.

45:10Four games, five maybe? Four games to go, five. Four or five to three. Four or thirty-five, yeah. There we go. Yeah, from what we've seen so far. Yes. I will go with that. Don't even look at me, I'm enjoying this.

45:23What's next? Oh, you're done? Oh, thanks. 15 % Jan to win it in Matchday 30. I think it's fantastic when I see Steven Nichols sitting there as a Nobel Prize winner and discussing with himself the percentage of what's happening when it's 24 games. No, 24 points to fight about around the 30th. I think this, I have to be honest, I think this thing of Arsenal building a dynasty and they will win it, I think it's too early. I think they have the potential to do that, but still Arsenal need to go up a bit and they have to develop. They haven't won two in a row since the 30s. So let's, they say in Germany, let's keep the church in the village.

46:10That's the Kirchendorf. So what are you letting him out for? What do you mean? We never answered the question. You didn't throw any German. After about two seconds you went, well answer that, that's not the question I asked you. Okay. You sit and let me in. You sit and you and prattle on about whatever. I don't even know what it was. 4%. Thank you very much, Chelsea. There you go. See? See? I'll do your job for you. I'll get the answer out of them. Craig, for all, Chelsea seem to be building to something amazing and become serious contenders within two seasons. Or this is all going to crumble down by the end of the season.

46:43Which camp do you fall in? I'm in the middle. In the middle? Sitting on the fence? Yeah, I mean, they're sending out... They've sent out some really different signals with players that they've signed. Now we're going young, this is what we're doing, this is the project. Then they go out and they signed... Welbeck. Welbeck and Jordan Henderson, which was like... So, you know, we're giving managers time, which they haven't. Now they've brought Xabi Alonso in. So I'm kind of in the middle of where this is all going to go at the moment. It looks relatively positive at the moment, but we'll see. Jan, you're at the United game.

47:26Looking at the performances so far of Anthony Gordon for Barca and Rashford for Manchester United, is it safe to say Barcelona's decision was the correct one? How was Rashford today? How would you rate him, Jan? He was Manchester United's best player. I think Rashford, as long as he played, he was good, he took on people. I think that he had a good game today. As for Anthony Gordon, I mean, we have to be honest boys, if you go to Barcelona, you will improve because you They play with the best players in the world. They've scored 17 goals. I probably could have scored a couple this season for them in La Liga.

47:58We have to be honest with that. But Rashford, I think, today, based on the performance today, they had to take him off. He had a little, a small injury there when he got on. He was good today. So I think that is far too early to make a verdict. This is a good question for you, Steve. What's more surprising after three games? Hull City with zero goals conceded or Spurs and Villa with zero goals scored? Ooh. Ooh.

48:29I don't... Is there actually one more surprising than the other for this? I think they're all in the same level. Nobody would say Hull would have no goals against after three games. Nobody. So that's three teams. That's 25 % each. Exactly I don't think you can put any of them Above or below any of the others Not at all Did you see Spurs yesterday? I didn't see Spurs for us How was it? They were Spurs-y Right So, yeah

49:06I think we have to give a compliment to Hull You want a five minute spear? No, you've answered my question with that No shots from Spurs yesterday No, no shots from Spurs and yes, they were Spursy, but I mean that's not very surprisingly that they will do that. I think it's an unbelievable performance so far by Hull. So whatever Hull is involved in any ranking, in any comparing, I will have Hull there. I know this question is differently, but I would still say that they go in there with conceding zero. It's fantastic. Yeah. What is more surprising? Oh, we've done that. I know it's only been three games, but looking past the actual results, what are your thoughts on how the Man United team is shaping up?

49:54Based on what you've seen on the pitch so far, what do you think our ceiling is for the season? Clearly a Manchester United fan. Jan, you have been at two of their games. Well, I think that they are as they were last season when Carrick was there. I don't see a big difference. I saw the game at Hull. There were a lot of midfielders running around. I didn't see the pattern there. That was much better today against Everton. They scored five against Ipswich. I also noticed that Santos being on the bench. He's one of their record signings that should improve the team. Cesko's coming in there. I mean, you need him there.

50:37You need his goals. I think that is important. I think the big question mark would be, well, how will they do it at the back when we see a Shaw. Shaw was better today. Him and Rashford had some different things going on on the left side. There was a bit of improvement. But I see them as three at the best and six at the worst.

51:15I remember, if I can start there, Hans-Jürgen Butch. I think it was for Leverkusen in a couple of clubs. He was fantastic. And then you had the goalkeeper of Paraguay, Chavalier. Chabalier, he even took fry free cakes and he was good at free cakes as well. Stevie did you have anyone?

51:38No, they weren't the designated penalty taker but my mate Pressman at Sheffield Wednesday was pretty dynamite. Explain to me why he's your mate Stevie for people who don't know the beef between the two of you. He was a little rotund. Shall we see? What does that mean? What does that mean? Rotund. I wasn't actually expecting you to go that way. I was expecting you to go more the way that he always went down and you always told him to stay up because he always got chipped. Yeah, he used to go down for fun. Even I chipped him. Did you? Yeah. Did you go, oh, you're a little rotund? No. I'll give him the little Chelsea.

52:22She'll go to Chelsea. He might have been still there. And I went through one-on-one. I gave him the little faint and down he went. Can I get my favourite story about a goalkeeper that was a bit, what shall I say? He was not the fittest? Yes. Simon Tracy, I played with him in Sheffield United, is one of my favourite stories. I went to Barnsley and we were playing them in a game. And before the game in the tunnel, Simon Tracy told me, Sheffield United goalkeeper, I'm striker for Barnsley. and he said to me, I know all about your chips, Jan. And I said, well, the only chips you know about is around your stomach.

53:02And then after 20 minutes, of course, one against one, chipping him. One nil. I love that story. Go on, Jan. Simon Tracy, I love you. Were you going to say something? No, just... When his name's mentioned, my brain goes straight to Old Trafford Eric Cantona's through I'm chasing Cantona I can see Pressman coming out and in my head I'm going don't go down stay on your feet you know he's going to dink you and what did he do? his chest collapsed somebody just pressed a button and his knees went and he went doing a ton of bricks and Eric just took his cigar out of his mouth and dinked it over him I was like that it was a shock yeah like Harlem would you be the same if you cut your hair as well?

53:54No, I need my hair. And I'm going to officially know the Norwegian with the longest hair in the UK. But I spoke with Erling after the game yesterday and it was so, it was full of everything yesterday. There was so much going on on one-liners. And we talked about his hair as well. And he said, yeah, everybody warned me. And the biggest warning came from Slatan. Don't do it, don't do that. But I just had to do it. I had to do it. I was planning that for a long time to do my hair and all those kind of things. And he was on about the World Cup. I'm still in a preseason, he said. Well, he scored three in that preseason in the Premier League.

54:32And there was an old thing going on. I have to reset after the World Cup. But his hair, he said that his hair will be back soon. But how soon can he be back? That's great. Thank you very much, Jan. Much appreciated. Just a reminder that ESPN will return hair and all because Mario Malkiot joins us on the show tomorrow. It is Monday. Of course it is. Monday, Mario.
