In short
The episode is a wide-ranging ESPN FC/Extra Time sports discussion focused mainly on Arsenal’s Premier League win, plus Champions League and other league storylines. Topic: Arsenal’s 3-0 home win over Fulham (“pole position” talk), Bayern vs PSG second-leg debate, Barcelona’s La Liga title push, West Ham’s relegation trouble, and Wrexham’s near-miss in the Championship.
Guests/backgrounds
Kane Murray, Alejandro Moreno, and Xhaka Hislop (ESPN FC studio). Jules (Extra Time host/analyst), plus Ali Moreno and Shaq (Extra Time Q&A panel).
Key claims
Arsenal look “back” and may have flipped pressure onto Man City; Saka’s return and service to Viktor Gyökeres (Jocheres) unlocked Arsenal’s attack. Fulham were “on holidays,” making the win easier. Bayern’s rotation is criticized as stressful minutes for players; PSG’s aggregate lead (5-4) is “not decisive” because Bayern at home should score. Barcelona are close to La Liga title; Real Madrid must beat Espanyol to stop a title celebration.
Notable examples
Arsenal goals in the 9th minute and before halftime (Jocheres brace; Trossard assist). Bayern rotated vs Heidenheim, still drew 3-3. PSG drew 2-2 with Lorient. Barcelona beat Osasuna 2-1 (Lewandowski, Ferran Torres; Raúl García reply). West Ham lost 3-0 to Brentford. Wrexham missed promotion via playoffs.

0:52Hello and welcome into the latest edition of ESPN FC. Kane Murray, Alejandro Moreno and Xhaka Hislop here in the studio. Lots to get through tonight, but we'll kick things off in the Premier League where Arsenal were up against Fulham. And this is how things played out with Bukayo Saka in the starting 11 for the first time since the cup final. Arsenal would score in the ninth minute through Victor Jocheres after Saka put Jimenez on the floor. He burst into the box, sent the ball across the face of goal. Jocheres sent it home. By the 40th minute, it was 2-0. This time, the roles were reversed. It was Jocheres released in behind.
1:25He slid the ball to Saka. He blasted in at the near post. And there was still to be another goal in the first half. Jocheres got his second. Arsenal got their third. Trossard with the assist on the cross for this one. 3-0. It would finish for Arsenal. Jules. It looks as though Arsenal are back. Have they just flipped the pressure back onto Manchester City today?
1:47Julien Laurens:Yeah, I think so. Not just with the win, but also with the way they won that game, especially in the first half. The second half was to be more in control and there were substitutions made by Arteta because on Tuesday night, of course, they've got the second leg of the semifinal of the Champions League against Atlético. So he had to mix things up at the beginning and then obviously through the game at halftime and the second half, as we see on the graphic. But yeah, I think it was important not just to win, but the way they won, scoring three goals, They hadn't scored more than one goal in the last eight games, as well in all competitions.
2:16Julien Laurens:So there was that kind of pressure almost in a way of them doing better with the ball. The return of Calafiore and Saka was very important. The start of Miles Lewis-Kelly in midfield was also very key, I think, tonight, this afternoon, because we saw how much he brought to this team in that position under pressure, but also against the lower block, if you want. Because let's be honest here as well, this game was made easier by the fact that Fulham were already on holidays. no intensity, no real energy they didn't start well, they didn't really play well Arsenal also hit the woodwork had a goal disallowed, all that kind of stuff they could easily have scored four or five so Fulham didn't play well we're not really there but credit to Arsenal for making that game easy for them I know that the stats back this up but you don't even need stats to show this one the difference today has got to be pointed to Bukayo Saka as well, it's night and day it feels sometimes when he's in this Arsenal it really was, when he's on the side and he's in this kind of mood.
3:11First start since the Carabao Cup final, he comes in and just has the run of the park, in all honesty. And all of a sudden, Arsenal look like a really good footballing team with Bakayo Saka on the park. More than just his performance as an individual, I thought what you saw from Bakayo Saka is an understanding alongside Giocares that got the best out of Giocares, who got a couple, could have had another. And all of a sudden, you see a free-flowing footballing team, albeit 95 % of that play coming down the right-hand side with Bakayo Saka, certainly when he was on the park and they looked very, very comfortable indeed.
3:50A couple of weeks after, they've kind of limped that 1-0 win against Newcastle. We've spoken about their reliance or over-reliance on set pieces in the past. This is as good a performance from, I want to say back to front, But I saw nothing of David Raya. I saw nothing of the back four, in all honesty. They were on holiday. It was that convincing, that commanding performance from us. We saw 21st goal of the season for Victor Jocheres. He's had his critics this season. But, I mean, they're decent numbers for a striker, Ale. What I would say about Victor Jocheres, you provide him with service, and usually he gets on the end of it.
4:31He may score, he may not, but he is active inside the 18-yard box. And what we see so often or we've seen so often from Arsenal is that they'll play around Jokeres, but never with him in mind and providing service. So that's why having a guy like Bukayo Saka playing at this sort of level, taking players down in 1v1 situation, of course it helps that it's Raul Jimenez, that is 1 ,000 years old, and who knows why he was in that sort of position. But regardless, I digress. Let's give credit to Bukayo Saka and the quality of his service, and let's give credit to Jokeres, who doesn't often get credit, but should get credit not only from the finishing, but the movement.
5:10We criticize here Jokeres, it must have been a couple of weeks ago, when he didn't have any touches coming onto the field in the game against Manchester City. The movement in the goal by Bukayo Saka that you saw from Victor Jokeres is available to Arsenal all the time. But in order to exploit that movement from Victor Jokeres, you have to have a willing passer of the ball. And let me just give a shout out to Eze, who I think should be on this team all the time. Now, he is inconsistent, admittedly so. But there are certain touches that he takes on the ball. You kind of go, this is a different level.
5:43This is a different sauce right here altogether. When he is playing at that high level, when Saka is playing at that high level, when Jokic is scoring goals, then yeah, Arsenal is fun. But the one thing that I would say about today that wasn't so much fun is the fact that they were playing against a team in Fulham that, as Jules put it, were already on vacation. I mean, they were laying out on vacation, tanning on vacation. And so there was a chance here for Arsenal, because a goal differential can be a problem, can be a difference maker here. Maybe there was a chance here to really make a statement for themselves, for Manchester City, and create a separation that may be hard to overcome for Manchester City.
6:25three could have been six very easily and had that been the case i think we're having a different conversation about arsenal altogether okay let's put some numbers on the table and percentage chance it's arsenal who win the premier league title for you right now jules after what we saw today
6:41Julien Laurens:i still 50 50 i don't think it's changed for me city will play two games now before arsenal play the next league game so city can come back level with a similar goal difference a better goal difference, less of a goal difference, we don't know yet. So as long as, until somebody drops points, it has to stay 50-50 because they're equal on pretty much everything. That is if City obviously win against Everton on Monday night and then beat Brentford the Saturday before Arsenal go to West Ham on a Sunday. If that's the case, it stays 50-50. If there's somebody drop a point, well not one, but two or three, then I think then the odds will be different.
7:19Julien Laurens:But for now, it has to be 50-50. I go slightly more for Arsenal. I want to go to make the math easy, 55-45, in that the old cliché... You took a chance. Yeah, well, it's close. You could have gone 60-40. No, no, it ain't that far. It's close. I just don't think it's 50-50. And the reason being, the old cliché, you prefer to have the points than the games in hand, which is what Arsenal have right now. Also, you look at Arsenal's remaining games. West Ham, Burnley, and a Crystal Palace, who I'm sure will equally be on the beach. If Arsenal play like this, and I know that is a big if, given what we've seen from them in weeks gone by.
7:59If Arsenal play anything like this, you can see them because, as both guys just mentioned, this easily could have been five or six. If Arsenal play like this and score four goals per game, let's say, that's asking Manchester City to score three per game in their remaining five in a much tougher run-in. So right now, I think Arsenal are in pole position. You went full math genius there. No, you see, so now... You carry the one. No, this is something I learned in life. You see it with confidence? Yes. Nobody questions you. I have no idea about my answer. I'm pretty sure that Matt doesn't quite...
8:40I mean, I think he crushed it. It was very believable to me. Are you going to simplify it a little bit for us, Ali? Well, 60-40 for Arsenal because they've won the games. And that, there is, there's nothing more important than that, that they already have the points. Assuming that Manchester City is going to get the points, that's a different question altogether. So I'll just say 60-40 Arsenal. But this is bound to change. Somebody is going to drop points to Jules. I think if Arsenal, you feel comfortable that you seem to have regained momentum, you have confidence if you're Manchester City, because you had momentum basically before Arsenal played these two games, but you still feel good about yourself.
9:24So, yeah, somebody drop points, they're done. And somebody will drop points. Who will that be? That's a bigger question. Let's focus on what's up next for Arsenal. It is that return against Atleti. They're bringing it back home. Jules, how are you feeling about it, and what do you think we're going to see? What type of game will it be, and what are you expecting from Arsenal's players?
9:45Julien Laurens:I expect it to be similar to the first leg on Wednesday at the Metropolitano, because I think there's no reason for either manager to change. I would be very surprised, though, if Simeone doesn't start with the back three that we saw in the second half in that first leg on Wednesday that worked much better than the 4-4-2 that he used with his own son on the right-hand side, for example. So I expect Atletico to line up in that way. Certainly the team that we saw that 3-4-3 that we saw at the start of the second half with Luqman, Alvarez and Griezmann in that front three. And then the two wide players, more than really the 4-4-2.
10:20Julien Laurens:From an Arsenal point of view, I still think they've got a bit of an advantage. I know it's a draw and there's no away goals anymore. So, but still, it feels like they've got for me a little bit of the edge because they will be at home. Although we saw yesterday, almost completely changed Atletico's side with a lot of youngsters. Or today, sorry, winning their game at Valencia. But I think it's very much in the balance. I give the slight advantage though to Arsenal simply because they will be at the Emirates as well. So we're going with the Xhaka 55 % to Arsenal? I'll go with the Ali 60-40 for that second.
10:49Julien Laurens:Oh, even stronger. These guys will be answering your questions on the latest edition of Extra Time. Make sure to check it out every single day over on our YouTube channel. With the game against PSG just around the corner, Vincent Kompany made seven changes to his Bayern 11 against bottom of the table, Heidenheim. We did get to see the likes of Kane, Lise, Luis Diaz and Kimmich all come on after the first half though. Bayern did manage to get things back level 3-3 that game finished. Meanwhile over in France for PSG changes were also made for Luis Enrique. We saw Cabrera Skelia and Dembele both on the bench.
11:33In this game though we did see PSG draw 2-2 with Lorient. And so all attention will turn to that clash in the Champions League. Second leg, semi-final. And they cannot be split. Obviously, PSG have the goal advantage here. 5-4, they lead on aggregate. But it is Bayern Munich playing at home for the second leg. It even had Stevie Nichols saying yesterday he cannot even decide, he will not even say who he thinks is going through at this point. We're going to get to that in just a minute. What I want to start with, though, is the fact that we saw, once again, just to see how you feel about it this week, we saw it against Mines.
12:09lots of changes for Vincent Kompany. We saw it against Heidenheim today, trailing at halftime and then bringing on the big guns when they've already won the Bundesliga. Are you okay with it now? Have you accepted it? I wasn't okay with it a week ago. I'm not okay with it today. You made the decision to rest your players for a reason. And the reason is obvious. You had PSG coming up, as you had PSG coming up last weekend. You go down to Mainz, in that case, with 3-0. captain today 2-0 against Heidenheim and in both situations you decided that you're going to bring not one or two guys to see if you can make a difference no all the guys that you were resting you're going to bring them onto the onto the field to do what exactly last weekend they came back oh look at the heart Mia San Mia Bayern Munich great they won they beat Mainz what does that mean it means absolutely nothing it's accumulating more minutes then you had stressful match physically stressful match, mentally stressful match against PSG, back and forth, a lot of physicality in that match, a lot of having to cover a lot of ground because you're chasing moments of transition.
13:17So you decide to rest your players today. Okay, that makes sense. You go down to Heineheim. Are we going to bring a couple of guys? No, no, we're bringing everybody back in. And so what is the rest or where is the rest? You've earned the right to rest your players. Then utilize it. If you decided to rest your players because you don't really think that this game against Heidenheim is all that important. Did it become more important because Heidenheim went up 2-0 on you? The more concerning thing about Bayern Munich, while all of that annoys me, the more concerning part about Bayern Munich is that over the last six matches, the last two weeks, we're not going over the course of a month, we're not going back to the beginning of the season, over the last two weeks, last six matches, this team has allowed 16 goals.
14:03And I don't care if you're rotating the team or not. You've allowed 16 goals. That has to change dramatically against PSG. Good luck. Can you pick a favorite? Can you pick someone who has the advantage here, Jules? Obviously, PSG taking the aggregate lead here, but is it the Allianz for this second leg?
14:25Julien Laurens:Yeah, which I really believe just level things up. I think it's almost a head start for Bayern to be at home. and that one goal advantage from PSG from the first leg, I'm not sure really count that much. It was really interesting to hear Luis Abrique after the first leg saying, to qualify, we know we would have to score three goals over there. Only three would do. If we score one and two, we won't make it to the final. We have to score three here, you know, over there next week. And I think he's right. I think he's right because Bayern will score at least two easily because that's what they do at home.
14:54Julien Laurens:I agree with everything Ali just said. I didn't, watching that game earlier, or had it on the screen at the Women's Champions League game. And I didn't really understand it. We saw Vara Scalier or Dembele staying on the bench for PSG when PSG haven't won the league yet. Bayern have won the league. It's not like if Bayern were still at Dortmund four points behind or six points behind, a bit like Lens and PSG. If company wanted, you could play the whole under-19 for the next, you know, for the last two games plus the two to come, it would be okay because they've already won the league. So I'm not sure I really understood either the logic of what he was trying to do.
15:29Julien Laurens:But from a PSG point of view, they got what they wanted this weekend. They played a lot of kids. And one of them made that mistake on the Lorient second goal that we just showed him. That's a shame on his debut. And he will never forget it. That's for sure. But Lens also dropped points later on. So that draw actually didn't matter so much for PSG. But they wanted to give full rest to a lot of those players like Vitinha, like Dembele, like Marquinhos, like Bravacelia. And all of that they did. So now they feel they're ready for Wednesday night. What do you think he is thinking, like Kompany doing this?
15:56Do you think he's just trying to keep some of that momentum and not having these losses on the board? Without question, I think, well, I'm speaking freely for Vincent Kompany here, but I think there's some value to us not being beat. And maybe as well, there's a plan to give some of these players some minutes. How many minutes? Who knows? Just for sometimes players like to get touches on the ball every single game. And regardless of whether they were three up or three down, Maybe he had a plan to bring them on, but because they're three last week, two this week, they're down, he brings them on maybe a little bit sooner than he planned.
16:29But I don't read too much into it. I think each manager sees this differently. Each player would approach these moments differently. This is just how Bayern and company have decided to do it. Fair enough, Shaq. But they're stressful minutes and then they're stress-free minutes. When you're trailing 3-0, when you're trailing 2-0, they become stressful minutes. Because the reason that you're being put on the field is to go chase. To go chase Mainz last week, to go chase Heinheim this week. I find that that stress was unnecessary. It doesn't help you at all for the midweek. That's all. and you've earned the right to have your players be in a stress-free environment because you've already won the league.
17:18I believe it's an incorrect decision. And I was saying this to Kay. You have the receipts. I was telling you this before they came back against Mainz, and I hold my position on that. I just don't believe that you need to push this agenda of this team having to come back against Mainz or having to come back against Heineheim. And mind you, both Mainz and Heimheim show you exactly the same things that PSG showed you in Champions League in terms of how to beat Bayern Munich. The transitions of Bayern Munich against PSG were awful. You would expect that, I suppose, because of the talent level of PSG.
17:56Not against Heimheim. Last place Heimheim. You see the third goal. Third goal is the transition in which he comes to Bayern Munich chasing. Why do you need Joshua Kimmich having to chase in a stressful moment for 80 yards? how does that help him for a sprint on Wednesday when it really matters against Usmane Dembele? It doesn't. Okay. Bayern have got a few more games to play yet, though. Obviously, that's the big one coming up in the Champions League. A few more games in the Bundesliga. We'll see what they do in those. But it is the cup final in Germany. Bayern against Stuttgart on May 23rd, 2 p.m.

20:01Barcelona put themselves within touching distance of La Liga's title with a 2-1 win over Osasuna. The goals came late, Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres with Barcelona's. Raúl Garcia put one back on the board, but Barcelona held on for three points closer to La Liga glory. Luis Garcia has been watching this game with us. We've got Julien Laurent joining us as well, but let me start with you, Ale. Very close now for Barcelona. Well, it was close to begin with, but yes, it's now become academic. And it really is whether Real Madrid shows up to play against Espanol or not, which from what we have seen from Real Madrid as of late, who knows?
20:42Who knows? This could be over tomorrow. One way or another, Real Madrid feels like they're going to have to do El Pasillo, the guard of honor for Barcelona next week. That's not going to feel all that great. As for Barcelona today, not great in the first half. And by not great, I'm really underselling the analysis of the match. There just wasn't a whole lot to talk about coming into halftime. And then you go in the second half slightly, and I mean slightly better, but what changed is that Osasuna did not quite have the same intensity defensively, and they allowed Marcus Raster just to sit on the ball, stand on the ball, wait for Lewandowski, as you were just saying, Shaka, to make whatever move he wanted to make.
21:22He picks out a pass, it's 1-0, then you turn the ball over in a bad area. that makes it 2-0. Barcelona thought that they had won it by then. You will see the celebrations on the bench. And of course Barcelona is going to give up a goal because this is what they do. 2-1. And it felt like it was that kind of game. That it was going to be a little close margin. So Sassuna, push, push, push, but not quite good enough. Barcelona win it. Big three points for them. And I think in the celebrations that you see post-match from Barcelona it's that they now know. They knew before. But they now really they really, really know that this thing is just about over.
21:55Yeah, and it does add to what Gemma Soler, our pitch side reporter was telling us ahead of the game, Luis, and that the Barcelona players just want to get it done. They are happy to get it done and wait and hope that Real Madrid drop points tomorrow where the Barcelona fans would love it to be won next week, to come down to next week in El Clasico against Real Madrid. What do you want? Do you want Real Madrid to drop points tomorrow?
22:19Julien Laurens:Yes, actually, yeah. I think the sooner the better. I think for the sake of the celebration, Let's do it as soon as possible. I think it's the best way. Normally, when you are that close, you never know in football that something can happen. I don't think there's anything to do right now because I think the Barcelona proved during a long season that they are the team that really deserves to win this trophy. Not because of what we've seen today, but today it's not pleasant ever to go to Pamplona and get a good result because you have to cope with the intensity and the match and the atmosphere. But to go there, I think that Barcelona didn't do anything of that in the first 45.
23:00Julien Laurens:And then in the second one, you could see a little bit of multisemination and a little bit more of the side of we want to win it today. And in the end, the talent, of course, and the quality of this Barcelona squad is, of course, way ahead of Osasuna, and you managed to get the result. But it's all about the celebration. I think that having Real Madrid going to the Camp Nou with the possibility of having a Guard of Honor, I think it will be something amazing, not only for the players that in the end, what you want is just to celebrate, but the supporters. Let's not forget, it's also a season where Barcelona can reach the 100 points, something that they didn't do since, I think, the 2012-2013 season.
23:42Julien Laurens:So things that are there on the table for Barcelona to grab. And right now it's all about celebration. Celebration tomorrow might be, but I think that the Camp Nou, we're going to have a big one. Are you kidding me? Are you kidding me right now? That Luis doesn't want this to happen against Real Madrid. Come on now. This is unique. It's never happened before. It would be the opportunity of a lifetime to be able to do that against Real Madrid at the Camp Nou, where you can basically be the team that just puts the final blow. Yeah, that delivers the final blow. What a chance this is for these players.

24:17So I think they're celebrating the fact that it's just about done. But I think secretly now they must be saying, come on, Real Madrid, you win tomorrow, baby. Go on and win tomorrow because we'll be waiting for you next week. What a chance this is for Barcelona to really drive the point home as to what the separation is currently between Barcelona and Real Madrid. Yeah, after the game with Osasuna, Gemma Salau is in the mix zone to catch up with Robert Lewandowski. Yes, you are with Robert Lewandowski. Congratulations. You had to work a lot to win this game.
24:51Julien Laurens:Yeah, of course. We know that here to win is not an easy job, especially that in the first half we play a little bit slowly, that we didn't, we couldn't also make the position to make the cross or even to have the opportunity to score the goal but you know sometimes you have to try, you have to fight and the second half we play a little bit more offensive, much better also and we scored two goals and even in the last minutes we know that we should to keep this this result and of course for us these three points are very important because we did one step closer to the champions. Tell me about the goal, because Rashford gives you a perfect ball and you do what you always do so well.
25:34Julien Laurens:Yeah, we were talking in the halftime that we have to try to make the cross in the good position, even that we have one against one in the area or even less players that we can also win the second ball. But in this case that I know that Marschroft has a perfect position to make the cross and I know that the line is broke, so that was perfect goal from Marcus. And in the end, this is kind of bold for me, that for the striker is amazing. And I'm very happy that I scored the goal and we won the game. You are so close to winning La Liga. What do you prefer? Watch it tomorrow on telly and celebrating or doing it in El Clásico?
26:17Julien Laurens:No, I prefer to win next game and then be the champion. So, of course, for us, also we have like the, in our head, that point that we can win 100 points, I think, in La Liga. So also, if you're going to win every game until the end of the season, that we can do this. And there's a lot of talk about your future. You scored your 18 goals today. You showed this season that you're a striker here. So, I want to ask you about next season. What do you want to do? I still have a little bit of time, so I don't have pressure. Even that now we have a few games until the end of the season, I'm focused on that.
26:59Julien Laurens:And of course I have to know it also, what kind of option I have, because I'm still waiting, but I don't have pressure. So we have still two or three weeks, maybe even more. So more focus on the next game and what we can achieve this season. But of course, we're ESPN FC, so we're already looking ahead to the summer and what could be going on at Barcelona, because we're seeing some of the rumours as to forwards who have been linked with the club. And of course, a lot of this will be to do with if Robert Lewandowski is to move on at the end of the season. These are the forwards that we're seeing link duels, Julien Alvarez, Joao Pedro, Alexander Solor.
27:38What do you think of this list?
27:41Julien Laurens:Yeah, I mean, it's a very eclectic list. Let's put it that way. You know, with strikers of different abilities. Or Solov doesn't play the same way as Alvarez, who doesn't play the same way as Joe Pedro. They've got different qualities. The edge, I think, is important here because if you're going to spend 50 or 60 million on Alexander Solov at 30, then obviously 30 is closer to the end of his career than to the beginning. Joe Pedro is much younger. Alvarez is a bit in between. Really, Alvarez would cost you more. I suspect Joe Pedro would still cost you more than Solov. but at least you get a different profile that is maybe more suited to the flick way of playing.
28:19Julien Laurens:And certainly with the age, you've got more years with them to come compared to solo to what might give you two very good years. And then that's it. So that's why I think the order that we put it is probably the priority from a Barcelona point of view. Then the question is, do they have the 90 million euros or 100 million euros that Atletico are going to ask for Julio Alvarez? Why not? I don't think they have that kind of money. so we wait to see what happens with Real Madrid tomorrow thank you so much Luis Garcia for being with us do we believe Luis Garcia that he hopes it's all happening tomorrow I believe Luis do you believe in Seca?
28:52no I do not you too no I do not you've got to give him the benefit of no he knows better Luis thank you so much I'll see you next week Luis Ale and Luis will be in Barcelona for the big game next week as it is El Clasico But before that, it is Espanyol taking on Real Madrid tomorrow. Real Madrid obliged to win this one if they are to prevent Barcelona winning La Liga this weekend. Our coverage will begin at 2.30 p.m. Eastern tomorrow. You can catch that game on ESPN2 and ESPN+.

31:28It was not a good afternoon for West Ham who were beaten 3-0 by Brentford. a major blow in their continue to battle with Spurs to avoid relegation. A frustrating day as well. They hit the post four times and a penalty was not called for them. This is a major blow for them as they continue their battle with Spurs to avoid relegation at the bottom end of the Premier League as it sounds right now. They've played a game more than Spurs who are two points behind them in the drop zone right now okay Jules is still with us but Shaka how are we doing not great is the short answer to that question listen obviously it's down to two clubs now you're waiting for a little bit of new manager bounce from from Spurs we would deserve to be coming in whether you think that's the right appointment or not it's just business as usual for West Ham, who have struggled.
32:28Struggled all season, particularly away from home. Spurs now have an opportunity to leapfrog West Ham and psychologically that's a tough place to be in. We have less and less games to play. So I'm not having a good weekend. Alright. No, saying that, my husband's been alright. One of my husband's been alright. But from a West Ham perspective, this is a hell of a blow. Spurs are playing Aston Villa. It's not like... You know? When it's not going your way, it's not going your way, Ali.
33:05This is what we're looking at in the relegation battle, Jules. It was a major blow today for West Ham, that result.
33:12Julien Laurens:Yeah, it was. And with Arsenal to come as well next weekend at the London Stadium, that's going to be tough as well. I guess I agree with Ali. Spurs to go to Villa Park, it's not given that they would get the three points, so at least that's that. And then it's Leeds at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and that would be the one, really. It's Spurs against Leeds and West Ham against Tarsall, and I think if by then the gap is still 1 point, 2 points, if West Ham are still ahead of Spurs, after the two games that Spurs are going to play now and the one game that West Ham has next weekend, then I think it'll look much better.
33:51Julien Laurens:But today, outside of hitting the woodwork and feeling a bit unlucky, I felt overall they didn't seem up for it. And Brentford played well at United, by the way, on Monday and didn't get the point, one point at least, that they probably deserved. And they lost that game, but they're still a very good team, especially at home. I just felt West Ham didn't seem really ready for what was coming to them. Yeah, so let's talk about the teams that are coming up, going the other way from those teams. Let's take a look at who's heading back up to the Premier League and joining Coventry City. It will be Ipswich Town in the second of the automatic promotion spots.
34:25They booked their return to the Premier League with a 3-0 win over QBH. Behind them, it's Millwall, Southampton, Middlesbrough and Hull City who will be going via the playoff route to find out who is the third and final team to go up. But let's start by talking about seventh-placed Wrexham. But let's have a little word on Wrexham. Let's talk about what we've seen here, because we did say it's always going to be so difficult. What they've done is so amazing. But coming to the championship, it's a whole new ballgame. It feels, Shekka. It really is. And the difficulty with playing the championship is you've got to, at times, be a good footballing side.
35:03At times, you've just got to be physical and win those battles. And it's a tough adjustment to make, especially as you've done, as Wrexham has, in rising through the leagues. How do you get that balance just right? But give Wrexham the credit to finish where they did, to be in it until the very last day of the season. Well, yes, I kind of guess, given their rise, many were, I want to say hoping, more so than expecting. But it certainly has been a good season and one that they can certainly build on for next season. I think they'll be there and challenging for the top two spots come 12 months' time.
35:43Yeah, pretty special to still see them get to where they did. Yeah, on the surface, and today in particular, it's going to seem like a failure that they were not able to get in the playoff. And it's going to take a little while for Wrexham fans and Wrexham players to gain some perspective. But gain perspective will be important for them because the goal coming into the season should have been consolidating their position in the championship. And they have done that and more. There has been no stress for Wrexham. They've always been near the top of the table and the top half of the table. They had a patchy start to the championship.
36:24They were able to create some momentum in the middle part of the season. They were in the conversation of the playoffs. They'll be disappointed now. But I think what Xhaka mentions there is very important. This serves as a building block for what's to come. You've learned much more about yourself this season and what's going to be needed and what it takes to then not only make it into the playoffs, but potentially make it into the Premier League. I think this has been a learning opportunity for this club and for everybody involved in this club, but a positive season. When you put it all together, I think it's a positive season and a building block.
36:58You should not hang your hat on the disappointment of the last day and make the assessment of the whole season based on what happened the last day. Yeah, it's a major learning curve, and they know what they're dealing with now with this league for next season, Jules.
37:10Julien Laurens:Yeah, exactly. Totally. I don't think they were ready to go up anyway. I don't think they're ready for the Premier League right now. So I'm not sure going up would actually have been that great. I think it probably would have been a bit of a poisonous present in a way. So it's still very positive. I agree with the boys. You can build on this. They only won two of the last seven. They clearly ran out of gas a little bit towards the end of this long season on top of the FA Cup run that they had that we also followed on ESPN. That was really brilliant at times. So they will learn a lot from this season.
37:44Julien Laurens:They also know they need to strengthen even more. They're going through a lot of changes at the club. We saw the stadium again today on the highlight that we showed and that stand behind one of the goals. So there's still a lot of work to be done before you can be ready even to go to the Premier League. Because once you're there in the Premier League, you certainly don't want to be a Yo-Yo team like we've seen even in Ipswich recently or Norwich. You want to stay there once you get there. So may as well get there when you're ready for it and then when you can stabilise yourself in the prominent.
38:12Julien Laurens:Yeah. So let's just give you a reminder of how the table looks going into the playoffs right now. Southampton are on a really strong unbeaten run. They're actually the favourites to make it up with the top two. Behind them, Middlesbrough, then Millwall and then Hull City. But I'm going to ask you guys who you would all like to see join them. This is not a trick question, but there are three wrong answers for you. I feel a little pressure here. This all feels very loaded right now. It really does. Shaka, who would you like to see go off with Coventry and Ipswich? Middlesbrough, eh? Oh, really? Yeah.
38:48Oh, that's nice. I wouldn't have expected you to say that. Well, you know, the whole northeast camaraderie thing going on. Mm-hmm. I feel a little intimidated right now. Absolutely. She's flashing the guns at you today, too. I'm trying not to look over at the gun. No, no, no. I like it. Oh, Middlesbrough, 100%. 100 % Middlesbrough. Chicken parmots for all. Jules, who have you got?
39:15Julien Laurens:I want to come back on the show. Middlesbrough. I want to come back on the show. You should have said something different. Because when you guys all go for the same thing, it doesn't work out here. So now you've jinxed us. Thanks, Jules. I was about to say, it takes a brief moment to say something else. You can come back on the show anytime, Jules. Brilliant stuff. Now, Jules has another show that he has to make an appearance on twice a week as well. That is the Gavin Jules Show. You can check it out wherever you get your podcasts.

Leoness had a comeback win in the second leg semifinal of the Women's Champions League to advance to the final.
40:59It was 3-1 on the day against Arsenal, 4-3 on aggregate to Lyon. You were there, Jules. What more can you tell us about what we saw?
41:12Julien Laurens:Yeah, I thought it was an amazing game, really, that we had on Disney Plus this afternoon. I thought Lyon played really well, the first half especially, full control, created chances, put Arsenal under pressure. Very, very poor first half from an Arsenal point of view. Then they got much better in the second half, like we saw in the first leg last weekend at the Emirates as well. enough to come back. It looks like going to extra time. And then this wonderful pass from Melchie Dumont for Euler Brandt. But that winning goal, we had to wait a long time for VR to check and put the line. But I think in the end, Lyon deserve it.
41:47Julien Laurens:Back in the Champions League final for the first time in two years, the last time that they were there in 2024, they lost to Barcelona. The last time they won it was four years ago, which is a long time for a team that has been so dominant in this competition. So they were all very happy. amazing atmosphere 23 ,000 fans at the Group Amar Stadium it was a really great afternoon for Oleon great stuff so Oleon through and now all attention turns to Barca and Bayern that game is coming up tomorrow you can catch it on Deportes 10.30am Eastern to find out who'll be joining them in the final and Football W come on check it out oh boy check it out this show has changed Ali and Jeff better pick Middlesbrough Ali and Jeff better pick Middlesbrough to go through because I will be joining them on Football W on Tuesday 1pm Eastern on 8pm+.
42:37I'll be bringing it, don't you worry. That's all we've got time for on the latest edition of ESPN FC. Jules is sticking around, so are these two. We'll be answering your questions on Extra Time. Stay right where you are. Welcome into the latest edition of Extra Time. Ali and Shakur are here in the studio and Jules is joining us too to answer your questions. All right, first question. You kept Jules around professional. Hold on, I just remembered. I went to Amherst last week, Sunday. Yeah. There's a guy in there, having a coffee in the coffee shop as you do. There's a guy in there with a book. He's reading a book with pages and everything.
43:14No pictures. Wow. And he said to tell Ali Moreno that the power rankings are always on point. Yeah, Ali. He just said, tell Ali. The power rankings are on point because he watches his show every day. This was a guy who made a decision to sit in a coffee house to read a book by himself. Yeah. Exactly. I respect that. I know you do. The power ranking would respect that as well. I just remember that. What's this person's name? I didn't get it. Oh, Shaq. Come on. Well, whoever you may be, you are not in my power ranking. Yeah, you're in mind every week. Yeah, C.S. Shears Coffee Roasters. That's my own thing.
44:01Okay, rate the following trios, Jules. Kane Diaz-Olise, Messi Suarez Neymar, Ronaldo Bale Benzema, Yamal Lewandowski Rafinha. Do we have any other trios in the past as impressive as the ones above?
44:20Julien Laurens:That's a great question. That's a great question. I mean, I guess you could go, you know Graves Kelly at Dembele do it because of last season in the Champions League because of what they've done already this season as well but yeah I think there you've got you've got the best of the best really then it depends what you like the most I still think to be fair and I know it's going off the question a little bit but the Messi Neymar and Mbappe on paper in terms of individual talent I know it didn't work for them not like those trios that we just mentioned on Ali's question there. But for me, purely in terms of individual talent, that the Messi, Mbappe and Neymar from 3R PhD in those two seasons was probably the greatest assembled.
45:10Julien Laurens:It didn't work out, so we don't put them in the same category as those trios who have worked out, all of them really brilliant collectively in terms of complementing each other, all of that. But if you look at pure individual talent, There's nothing better or bigger than Mbappe, Messi and Neymar together. If you count on those, for me, I would always have something a bit special, obviously, with Messi, Suarez and Neymar. Because I think that 2015 travel, especially under Luis Enrique, was something a bit special. Maybe more than the Real Madrid trio or the other ones. So just to be clear, get a list and Jews names two PSG trios that are not on the list.
45:48They somehow get named worse than most.
45:50Julien Laurens:It's just to broaden the chat. I'm just noticing the trend, Jules. That's all. Messi, Suarez, Neymar. All day, every day for me. OK. I'll need to come back to Jules here because this actually came up in the show. It's going to be a PSG. It's going to be some PSG. It's not. Wrexham. Jules, is Wrexham falling just short of promotion, a blessing in disguise? Wouldn't four consecutive promotions up to the Premier League be too much for a team's infrastructure to handle? Yeah, completely. I completely agree. That's the point that we made on the show as well earlier. I don't think they were ready for the Premier League.
46:26Julien Laurens:I think it's always great. Of course, you see the Premier League, you're quite close to it. If you get it through the playoffs as well, it's special that they are at Wembley. If you get the final and then the promotion, the party, everything. And then I think the reality kicks in of like, wow, OK. Because we know the stepper from the Championship to the Premier League is so big. It's so huge. That's why so many teams go straight back down. And those teams are bigger and more equipped than Wrexham are right now. So for me, I know it's frustrating right now and you'll be sad if you're a Wrexham fan, if you're the players, if you're obviously, you know, the ownership and all of that.
47:01Julien Laurens:But I think in a bit of time when things have calmed down and you can look back a bit at the season and where you started and where you finished and you can build on that and then you suddenly will be more ready, maybe not even in a year's time, but in two years' time, far more ready to go up and stay up. More importantly, going up is great, but it's nothing really. Then you go back down straight away and then you don't go back up for another 20 years. So may as well go up when you're properly ready and ready to have a fight to stay up in the front of you. Can I, I know we're going a question back, but a trio of my own, may I put that out there?
47:35Of course. Because the world didn't just start, or the world of football didn't just start in the 2000s. So about a little Jairzinho, Pelé, Rivelinho. Just saying, if we want to have real conversations, we have to look further back than just the year 2000 and what has come in the new century. The sport was played in the last century as well and was played at a high level. You know the problem with that trio? Didn't play for PSG. Oh, well, I'm sorry. My apologies. Well, it was a national team, even.
48:10Julien Laurens:I didn't think we counted national teams. Well, he just said a trio. I just mentioned a trio. Because the rules are out. Ale, if you're Robert Lewandowski, do you take a pay cut to stay at Barcelona or do you move on to Serie A, MLS or Saudi Arabia? If I were Robert Lewandowski, at this point in my career, I would start looking very loosely to country clubs in the area and beach clubs in the area. And then also beach properties somewhere in the area. I'm going to give you a recommendation, Robert. Maybe you're watching, maybe you're not. Hilton Head, South Carolina, specifically Sea Pines in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
48:54You have golf, you have beach, great food, great weather. I'm telling you, that's where you want to be, Robert Lewandowski. Forget this whole thing about playing. Go ahead and enjoy your life. So you're just done. You're just done with this football thing. If I were Robert Lewandowski? Yeah. Yeah. Are you kidding me right now? I'm not arguing with that. I'm not arguing with that at all. Do you like my plan though? I do like my plan. All right, okay. But it has to be specifically sea pines. Sea pines. It's a little bit more secluded, a little bit more privacy. You know, I'm a private person. Right.
49:30And so is Robert. You know. We're gonna be hanging out together. Plus, one and the same. I don't know if I understand this next question. Maybe I've missed something. Okay, did Saka's assist for the first goal remind you of AI's killer crossover? Allen Iverson. It's a basketball. No!
49:54Yeah, it's artificial intelligence. You're kidding me. It's okay. Allen Iverson. Allen Iverson. It's a basketball thing. Did it remind you of that?
50:16Jules, you know how to answer this one.
50:22Julien Laurens:Yeah, 100%. It's very much that. I mean, he sat Raul Jimenez down, didn't he? I mean, you could go for Allen Iverson, you could go for Jamal Crawford, Jake Crossover, if you want, who I think had probably as good handles that Allen Iverson had as well. But yeah, it was that kind of spectacular, I go right, I go left, then you go to get a hot dog. Again, I don't want to dwell on the past, but I'll give you Tim Hardaway, perhaps the best crossover in the history of the NBA. He would be my pick if I'm going to pick a crossover. All right. Jokeres reached 20 goals in all competitions. Should we be giving him more pressure?
50:59Why not? No. Jokeres did, listen, granted, was it 21 now in total, great, but I still don't think Jokeres is regarded as one of the best finishers or best strikers, number nines, in football. As a matter of fact, it's a long way from it. And if Arsenal plan to be competing at that level consistently, I think they need a better number nine. He's just a goalkeeper. Is he wrong or right? Well, I understand Xhaka's point, but it's also fair to say that this team could be on the verge of winning the Premier League and Champions League. So how much higher of a level are we talking about? Yes, Jokeres could have been better for them than he has been, but I don't think he's been as bad as people have made him out to be.
51:53A lot of it has had to do with the fact that Arsenal have played around Jokeres and have not provided him with service. I'm not making excuses for him. I'm just merely suggesting that I don't think they've used them as well as they could. Okay. That's a fool. You know, I'm a big fan of positivity. I'm not sure even Martefe thinks that. All right. I want to know what Joel sees just quickly on this.
52:15Julien Laurens:No, I agree with Ali, everything that Ali said. And also, let's not forget, Bukovic is a guy who has played in the championship and in the Portuguese league so far. Again, going back to step up between the championship and the Premier League, it's the same when you come from Portugal. So there was always a time for him to adapt. I think I've said that on the show before. In Portugal, he might have had a second between his first touch and taking a shot for his finish. That in the Premier League, you don't have a second. If you take a second, the goalkeeper is on you, the centre-backs are on you, they block your shot, they deflect your shot.
52:46Julien Laurens:It's half a second at best. And that is a change when you've been used for two seasons to have a bit more time on the ball when you get into the box, that your runs get picked up. when you play for a team that creates chances for you, a lot of them, which is not the case of Arsenal because of the way they play, being very different to how Sporting was playing. You need a bit of time. And I don't think it's a surprise or a coincidence that Giocares in 2026 is much better than the Giocares we saw between August and December 2025. For example, most of those 21 goals have come since the turn of the year for a reason, because I think he's feeling better in this team.
53:20Julien Laurens:And I also think the rock rate that he brings in terms of pressing and counter-pressing and runnings. and yeah, at times he's a bit clumsy and all of that. But I think he's brought value to this team for sure. And with all that, if Havertz is fit, we're not quite sure who's going to start against Atletico. All right. Okay. All right. I'm just very particular with my flowers. I don't just give out flowers. It's a different skin set. I don't just give out flowers willy-nilly. Okay. From giving out flowers, I've got... You give out power rankings willy-nilly. No. No. No, that's not true. but I've got a friend who reads books.
53:56Okay, guys, with the news that Stevie is parting with his championship artefacts through auction, is there one piece of football memorabilia that you guys would absolutely not part with? At the World Cup, Adidas did a special edition boot for Trinidad and Tobago. I got everybody on the squad to sign it. That's the only thing I will not part with at all, ever. Ali? my national team jersey from my debut with the Venezuelan national team. I have a lot of national team jerseys over the years, but there's one that holds a specific sort of value to me, as well as the version of that same national team jersey with which we played Copa America 2011.
54:48All the other stuff, I'm not going to part with it, to be honest with you. But those are the things that I would hang on to. Right. I may take those things out of the house. If the house is on fire, I may take those things out of the house before I do my kids, to be honest with you. Hey, Pedri, you coming or not? Pedri! I'll be honest, though. Some fire! As much as I'm saying I'm not parting with them, if my house catches fire, I'm not sure where to look for it. Oh, well, there you go. I know it's in there somewhere. I know it's in my house. Is that how valuable it is? I know it's in my house somewhere.
55:20Yeah, you love it so much. Is that, okay, no, it's not a top, I'm sure it's not a top-down kitchen. It's somewhere around. All right. Thank you so much, guys, for sending in your questions. That's all we've got time for on the latest edition of Extra Time. See you soon, coffee shop guy. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, see you soon, coffee shop guy. Pevere may get injured on the way out.
