In short

ESPN FC’s World Cup recap and preview, focusing on France’s group dominance, Spain’s uneven performance, Belgium’s late surge, Uruguay’s physical collapse, Cape Verde’s historic qualification, and the upcoming Colombia vs Portugal match plus other bracket predictions.

Guests (backgrounds)

Alejandro Moreno (former pro/analyst), Shaka Hislop (former pro/analyst), Kay Murray (host). Additional contributors: Frank Leboeuf (World Cup winner/analyst), Mario Suárez and Alex Kirkland (ESPN FC correspondents/analysts), and Stuart Robson (analyst).

Key claims

Ousmane Dembélé’s finishing has improved; France are “frightening” but still need defensive balance. Spain topped the group yet looked “average,” with concerns about midfield rhythm and left-side productivity; Uruguay’s aggression and a controversial Valverde substitution suggest internal issues. Belgium’s ceiling depends on Courtois; the US could exploit Belgium’s pace/pressing mismatch. Ronaldo’s effectiveness vs Colombia depends on service into the “second six-yard box,” while Colombia’s center backs are a physical matchup.

Notable examples

France beat Norway 3-0 (Dembélé first-half hat-trick); Senegal thrashed Iraq 5-0; Belgium beat New Zealand 5-0; Spain beat Uruguay 1-0 (Baena after a Mosler error); Valverde subbed off at 57’ in Uruguay’s loss; Cape Verde qualified via three draws; Ronaldo scored twice vs Uzbekistan.

0:28This episode is brought to you by Google Chrome. on Norway and the rest of the field as the Ballon d 'Or winner takes centre stage. And Spain win their group but with a performance that raises more questions than answers. We'll recap another historic day in the World Cup and look ahead to the big one in Miami, Colombia vs Portugal. Plus, the USA's path just got a little bit trickier. It's all ahead on ESPN FC next.

1:06Hello, good morning to all of you. Thank you for joining us on this morning show. ESPN FC is with you, with Alejandro Moreno, with Shaka Hislop and with myself, Kay Murray. We have lots to look back on and plenty to look ahead to as well. We'll have people joining the show, but we must start in Boston, where we saw Norway taking on France. And France winning Group I, now that all is said and done, Guzman Dembele with a first-half hat-trick and all three goals were of the finest quality. Now, the last time that France won all three in the World Cup group stages was 1998, and we know what happened there.

1:44Ali, I wonder if you could help me with the translation here. It's a little difficult. Oh, boy. That would be the artist. Yes, it is. Oh, my goodness. You know, I've been looking at it and wondering what it's said. But, yes, Usman Dembele with quite the showing against Norway. Norway with 10 changes, it has to be said. But Julian Durant doesn't care about that at all. He's got a great tan. Yeah, he does. Looking great. France are looking brilliant, Jules. How awesome was that? Yeah, that was really good. I mean, we can point out the fact that Norway, what, surprisingly and weirdly, I think, as well, changed 10 players and played very much the B team but when that front four played together like that the way Olyse Dembele and Mbappe then I think even the A team from Norway or many A teams in the world would have struggled to cope with all of that class if you want and it's good for Dembele to score because he's been struggling a little bit with the national team over the last 10 years not just recently not just since the Ballon d 'Or or not since the two Champions League but things have been a bit more difficult for him could not really reproduce what he does with PSG with the national team.

2:50So it was great to see him in that kind of form and score those goals that we've been used to seeing score for PSG. It feels weird to ask you this, Ale. Yeah. But this is a Ballon d 'Or winner. He's got back-to-back Champions League. He's a talisman in that PSG side. And now we saw this, a first-half hat-trick in the World Cup. Is this player still underrated, though? Well, I guess I'll answer that question by saying that he's not the best player in this team. And as good as he was against Norway, that's what makes France so very scary to play against. Yeah, he was outstanding. Yeah, he scored a hat trick.

3:28Yeah, he's become far more efficient and effective in front of goal. We used to think about Ousmane Dembele and all the near misses. Now we think about the quality of his finishing. All of that has improved. And yet, when I watch this team play, he's not better than Michael Elisa right now. and we haven't even talked about Kylian Mbappe and we haven't even gone deeper and talked about Barcola and Due and Cherki and this and that that's why this team you watch them play and you go, this is different sauce altogether this is a different conversation altogether and as for Ousmane Dembele what I think has been very clear to me is there's been a change in him individually in terms of his maturity and in terms how he sees himself in the game and the importance of the game to him.

4:18The game in general, not just France, not just PSG, but the game in general has become far more important to him. That added to the fact that obviously there has been an influence from Luis Enrique and that has impacted his level of play at club level. And now he has taken that to the national team level. So you can see the trajectory. It's trending for Ousmane Dembele and it's trending from France as well. So who is France's best attacker? because LA has just listed off a whole line of brilliant quality for France. Look at this, Dembele, Mbappe, Olisse. There you go, Shaq. Welcome to the show.

4:54Yeah, listen, if I'm building a team from scratch, I still go for Kylian Mbappe as my number one pick out of those three. But do not discount the contributions. Well, obviously, you saw Dembele yesterday. Michael Olisse continues to establish himself as one of the best attacking footballers in world football today. one of the things I think that kind of works against Dembele if you can say that is it almost feels as though he's filling what gaps are missing for Didier Deschamps we saw Olyssé start out on the right hand side in their first game against Senegal that wasn't working so they move Olyssé inside and stick Dembele out so it's almost as though everybody find what position is best for you and Dembele, because he's so good on either foot, because he can play almost anywhere in that three behind, behind Kylian Mbappe, he takes a position by default.

5:51Now, again, it's great to have that skill set, but then what you find is you don't really find your niche. And as Dembele progressed through this tournament, all of a sudden it clicked in that game against Norway, albeit an understrength Norway. Dembele in this kind of form, only in the form that we know he can produce, killing Mbappe similarly. Dewey on the outside. It's just absolutely frightening for everybody else. Which is your favourite Rolex, Jules? I mean, what I think is really interesting is, and we need to see it in bigger games and against better opposition, really, than what we've seen yesterday, for example.

6:29But how they will share the ball is always the same thing because after Mbappe, Dembélé, sorry, scored the third goal, there's another counter-attack, another transition for France. I don't know if you remember, but he has to shoot. He's in the best position to shoot. And yet he tried to square the ball for Mbappe because he probably felt, I've scored three now. I need to try to feed the others and especially Kylian, who, as we know, wants all those goals and wants to finish top goal scorer and catch Messi, etc, etc. So it's how you will move that ball, how you will share that ball between all those incredible attackers.

7:02That is, I think, the most important. And then we can look also at the defence and finding the right balance because yesterday against that, be Norway team. I think France conceded far too many chances too. So there's still a lot of work to be done, both with the ball going forward and also without the ball and without the ball defensively. Personally, that front four, I think like Stalys sold back and said after the game, I don't think any other team in this World Cup can match that. Jules is definitely keeping it real and keeping it grounded. Frank Leboeuf, however, is getting a little bit carried away with himself right now because after Douay's goal to make it four for France, we had the cameras on him.

7:38yeah another goal come on friends yeah desirate douay yeah we are so strong we are so strong i love it i mean i heard no lie yeah but see it's a it's a celebration but not as effusive as it could have been. Because you know what's happening? I think Frank realizes now that this team has the potential to not only win this World Cup, but be a dominant team in the World Cup. And therefore, the significance of Frank LeBeouf as a World Cup winner in France diminishes by the second. Diminishes. Well, not in his mind. Not in his mind. Not in his mind. Not in his mind. when there is an opportunity for appearance.

8:31Kylian come for the appearance. Ousmane come for the appearance. Oh, Michael Liss is coming for the appearance. Frank what? Frank LeBeouf? No, that's all right. The actor? Frank LeBeouf, the actor? Yeah, yeah. The guy who dresses in chocolate from his place? That guy? No. Should Frank ever be worried about that, Jules? They will always be the first ones anyway. So his generation, the 1998, even if Dembele and Mbappe win a second World Cup, this time around after 2018, it won't be the same. So I think the Zidane and LeBeouf and all the other generation will always be the first one to have brought that trophy home.

9:07So there will always be something special. But the boys are right. At some point, certainly the new generation of fans will identify themselves far more to this team and these players than the one from 1990. Which is why he's now known for car commercials. And very comfortable shoes. Very comfortable shoes as well. We will not mention those unless you'd like to send us any. The Norway fans have been lighting up the tournament off the pitch. We got to see the Viking row. Travelers, they've gone to see the golf. They've gone to support the Norwegian golfers, Christopher Wrighton and Victor Hovland.

9:39And here they are. Look at this. That's a powerful row. Love that. I wish their manager was rowing like this yesterday. He seemed to be rowing in the wrong direction yesterday. Well, there might have been 10 extra players there that got to have a rest yesterday. They were at the golf. Elsewhere in the group, it was Senegal against Iraq. That was the other game. Both teams needed a win to have a chance at qualifying, but it wasn't guaranteed. However, it was a massive 5-0 win for Senegal against Iraq. And what a performance we got to see from them, Jules. Senegal lighting up this game. Five goals to nil.

10:21Yeah, finally, we should say, because this is a very talented team. We said it from the beginning, and yet against France, despite the really good first half where they should have been ahead, then after that, the second half, they were completely dominated by the French, and then against Norway again, where the shadow of themselves, really outside of maybe the last half hour in that game or 20 minutes. So it was good to see them at that level. Iraq were down to 10 men very early. Senegal scored the first goal really early as well. So things went their way. Finally, it's great. They should still qualify now with the goal difference that they have, even with just the three points.

10:57But let's not forget that this is a team that had been really underwhelming so far with issues in the camp, with Pabcho, who didn't have a contract, with players' bonuses that hadn't been paid and things like that, that probably disturbed their squad a little bit. However, they're a very talented team, and that didn't go away. we can look at Hulibali or Mane and discuss the fact that should they start or should they not start now at their age and with the form that they have but it's still a very, very good squad that I don't think really nobody would want to play now in the round of 32. Lovely stuff.

11:31Jules, we're going to let you go and work on that tan here. I mean, how much work can he do? I mean, that thing is perfect right now. He's coming north, he's coming up to New York so we'll be seeing a lot more of Jules throughout the tournament and if you'd like to hear a lot more of Jules you can check out the Gab and Jules podcast. Not nearly a stand. Wherever you get your podcast. There he is. Look at him. Julian LeRun. We get to talk Belgium after the break because finally they too turned it on and in some style as well. That's coming up next.

14:00Enjoy great taste and nutrition with Fairlife Ultra Filtered Milk. and Tempapede. Group G was up for grabs yesterday. All four teams coming into the final group game with a chance to progress. In the end, it finished Egypt 1, Iran 1, New Zealand 1, Belgium 5. The group concludes with Belgium and Egypt going through to the round of 32. As for Iran, they will await their fate when it comes to the third-place teams. But we need to talk about Belgium first because yesterday, Shaki, you said when we were doing the predictions, if Kevin De Bruyne and Lukaku can turn it on, this can change for Belgium.

14:39And they did it. They left it late, but they got it done. It can. I feel we have the same conversation about this version of Belgium that we've had so many years past. Incredibly talented. If it all takes it, it all comes together. They're a match for anyone. But we don't get to say that often enough. In this moment, in this tournament, when it was most needed, those players showed up. And Belgium looked at their best. Now, can they continue to repeat this form later on in the new tournament against better opposition? As the number of games starts to take a toll, and I'm kind of thinking of De Bruyne in particular here, I'm not so certain, but this is Belgium at their promising best, albeit against a New Zealand side that, in many respects, made it easy for them.

15:25Yeah, I think, look, we can talk about De Bruyne now, we can talk about Lukaku and what their roles are and how important the roles may be for Belgium going forward in this competition. I think their most important player is actually Thibaut Courtois and may just be the difference maker because I think we can all agree that Thibaut Courtois is the best goalkeeper in the world currently. If he gets hot, he may just keep Belgium in games that otherwise they wouldn't be. I don't see this team as a real threat in this competition. They may advance out of the round of 32 and then after that, I'm not quite certain as to what their ceiling is, But their ceiling may be higher given the fact that Thibaut Courtois may get hot.

16:04And he's going to need to get hot because this team is going to give up chances. Now, it's interesting you say that because as we take a look at the bracket as it stands, we've got United States taking on Bosnia. For Belgium, it's possibly South Korea. It could be Senegal. Then it takes us to the round of 16. So where you could have been talking for the U.S. about an Egypt or a South Korea, it could likely be Belgium here. We know there's history there, Ale. But it sounds as though you think that could be OK for Pochettino's men. Once you get into knockout competition in the World Cup, eventually, if you keep up advancing, you're going to meet some good teams.

16:39And Belgium, while they're not great, they're good enough to, I think, be a real challenge for the United States. However, if we go back 12 years to 2014, where there was some history in terms of knockout competition between the United States and Belgium, and Tim Howard had to make a thousand saves and this, that, and the other. This version of Belgium is nowhere near that version of Belgium. And I do think that there are certain things that the United States can exploit. And the pace with which the United States played their two initial games will affect Belgium. I don't think Belgium will like that at all.

17:15I don't think they will like the high press. I don't think they will like the counter press. I don't think that they're young enough through the midfield to keep up with that sort of energy and intensity. Now, the United States have to bring that attitude higher up the field. And if they do that, I think they're going to create turnovers and force issues against Belgium. Belgium is an OK team. They're not an explosive team. They're not dynamic enough. And some would say, well, but they beat New Zealand. Yeah. Did you watch them play the first couple of games? Have you seen Lukaku out on the field?

17:49Does that guy look like he's in shape? He's in a shape, but not the shape that you need to be. All I'm suggesting is that Belgium is not exactly the team that they once were. It's the leftovers of Belgium right now. Did that make it clear to you, Xhaka, that Ali's not quite as high on Belgium? He's not sold on Belgium. I got that. Listen, I'm with Ali on most of it. I'm not going to point at anybody's shape. I just said he was in A shape. I'm just saying. I'm just saying. Listen, as we said right now, and yes, okay, kind of have an idea who the third-place team against Belgium may be. If they negotiate that, as maybe you'd expect, and the U.S.

18:32does, as I expect against Bosnia, those to meet. And I'll be honest, in terms of kind of the European teams in the round of 16 that you may be able to meet, especially as a group leader, I'm taking Belgium here. I am, from the U.S. perspective, I am happy with that draw. I fancy who we are, our threat, up against a talented but aging Belgium, as I described. Of course, you have to get there. You have to earn that right. But still, as paths go, until you come up to the next round, I don't think it could look any easier for the U.S. right now. All right. Talking about the U.S., remember Pochettino speaking after the Turkey A results saying, oh gosh, everybody's talking as though Turkey were the ones who are going through here and that we're the ones that are going home.

19:22We actually won the group, he reminded everybody. Well, in case you missed it, we talked about it with Craig Burley on last night's show and this was his take on it all. I flicked on social media briefly. Don't do that. I told you to do that. No, but I flicked on briefly and all these people were going, why are the US not doing this? And I'm thinking, who are these people? And our colleagues, some of our colleagues. because he wasn't the only one. Some of our colleagues there talking about the game as if it was the biggest game on the planet. It was meaningless. No wonder Mauricio Pochettino, he probably went back to his hotel room and was headbutting the window thinking, I've got to deal with these people.

19:59The last 32 now is a winnable game. You want your best players. I want Balogun Sharp, I want Adam Sharp, I want Pulisic Fit. And people are getting their knickers in a twist over a game that means nothing. Pochettino must go back and think, this is what I'm dealing with. What was the point of staying here? I'm dealing with this. I've given them two great performances. I've got this campaign off to an absolute flyer with a brilliant game against Paraguay. Most of the country's up and going, this is great, this is great. And all of a sudden, the Debbie Downers are here because they made a few changes in a game that means nothing.

20:34Give your freaking head a wobble, will you? Can I tell you what's happened here? Craig's become a US citizen. Oh, is that what it is? Yeah, there's been a marked change in his attitude towards the U.S. men's national team. He's actually fighting for them and sticking up for them now. Was he talking to Hercules? It felt like he was talking to Hercules. People are drowning in a glass of water. Yeah. And maybe it's a lack of awareness and understanding that the position that the United States were in following their two matches is a position that everybody would have wanted to have been in. you think about the teams that went to their last match group state match not only qualified but having won the group already it's a position of strength it's of advantage it gives Mauricio Pochettino the choice to do whatever he wants to do with the team that is a good thing that is a good thing it's not a bad thing and somehow it's been sort of turned into this negative narrative that makes absolutely no sense.

24:09Spain beat Uruguay 1-0 guay say Marca. Cool basically and having a little play on words because of Uruguay but it wasn't really that cool for either side and we are going to get into it. For Spain they'd already qualified and they topped the group now with that 1-0 win. It was Alex Baena with the goal, capitalizing on an error by Fernando Mosler, a howler, in fact, which led to Bielsa. Shaq is trophic. At halftime. I know Shaq is going to have something to say about that and we'll let him, but we do have to welcome him from Mexico, Mario Suarez and Alex Kirkland. And Mario, I know you are chomping at the bit and you want to talk about Uruguay.

24:45We are going to get there, my friend. Pass that microphone back to Alex Kirkland, because we need to talk first about Spain. Let's talk about Spain because, OK, they topped the group. It was a 1-0 win, Alex, but there's some questions to be asked of this Spain side. Yeah, big questions, I think, Kay. I think topping the group was really the only big positive from last night's game. Everything else felt to me like a step back. It felt much closer to what we saw in the opening game against Cabo Verde compared to what we saw against Saudi Arabia. I think this was a concerning performance, really, from Spain.

25:19The rhythm dropped. There was less urgency. All the gains they'd made in that second game, like I say, it felt like it was back to square one. It felt, again, they were waiting for Lamine to do something and make something happen. And when he didn't, there wasn't much else. The midfield looked almost pedestrian again. Rodri, I don't think, had a great game. Unai Simon in goal dropped a couple of crosses, didn't look confident. Oyathabal was very quiet in attack after a good game against the Saudis. It was fine. Look, they've topped the group. They're through to the next stage. That's the bottom line.

25:49They've avoided Argentina in the round of 32. But aside from that, this was a performance that makes me think when they come up against a really good team, you know, whatever that may be, in the round of 16 in the quarterfinals, if they don't improve significantly, I would be concerned. Mario, where's the Spain side that we were promised as favourites coming into this tournament?

26:11Well, I don't know, but the truth is that they are winning, they didn't concede any goals and they are growing. Lamine is growing every match. The worst thing I think is the injuries from Jeremy Pino and Nico Williams because you are going to play only with Lamine on that position. But I think it's better to continue winning matches and you can improve when you are winning. I mean, you are on the next round, you are gonna face a team that you are gonna be favourite in LA. You are going to have some days to recover some players, some key players, to keep improving, to correct the things that you are not doing in the right way.

26:48But I don't know. It's never an easy match on a World Cup. And the reality is that they have seven points, no goals conceded, and I think they are still improving. So everything's fine. Now we've got to get to Uruguay. That was frustrating. Yes, of course. We'll get there with you in a minute, Mario. I want to come to you on it first, Ale, because Uruguay here, very physical in this game. Well, before I get to Uruguay, I know you want to get there. We're tied for time. But let me just tell you, and to Mario Suarez, who's listening, he was so arrogant after the game against Saudi Arabia in telling me, Si, Ale, Ale, no te preocupes.

27:24There's nothing to worry about. We'll be fine. We're good. And I'm like, I don't think we're good, Mario. I don't think we're good. And we're not good. Spain is not good. It's not good. I don't care how Mario wants to paint this. Spain looked a very average team yesterday against a team in Uruguay that has nothing other than fight. All they were looking for was a fight. And Spain were not smart enough and intelligent enough, or good enough for that matter, to play around that fight and to get through Uruguay without having to get in 50-50 challenges with Uruguay. You know, you want to talk about it, Mario?

27:59Go ahead, talk about it. Try to defend Spain. There's no defense right now. Ale, Ale, how many Champions League won Real Madrid without playing well? The important thing here is to go through, and Spain went through. Look, Uruguay is out now. Who qualifies? Spain. We are talking about all the bad things that Spain is doing, but we have to keep positive. And the reality is that we go through, we are improving, we can get players like Mikel Merino, like Lamine, getting better and better. and the positive things. OK, the day we lost, I will be... Real Madrid out here catching straight. Spain as it is right now.

28:39Ale, I feel as though this is a little bit personal to you, though, because you picked Spain to go all the way and win this World Cup. Yeah, see, I believe in Spain. At this point, it's blindly. Blindly and stubbornly believe in Spain. But I have to see something more. They're so right-sided with La Minha Mal. They have no option down the left-hand side. There is no real productivity coming from the left-hand side. So I'm going to say, Alex Baena scored yesterday. Look, if that's going to be the argument for Spain, good luck with that. You're not getting productivity from the left-hand side. You're not getting Cucurella up the field.

29:14And more importantly, and I think this is the most concerning part, the midfield of Spain has shown me nothing, nothing. This is supposed to be the best midfield in the world. That's why they were in the Euros, and that's why they were successful. You had wing play with Laminya Mala and Nico Williams, and you had a midfield that was playing out of their minds. This midfield is not playing out of their minds. And I include my son, Pedri, in that conversation. I don't think he was good against Uruguay. And Rodri looks like a player who's a step behind the rhythm of play. So, yeah, I'm emotionally invested, personally invested in Spain, and I don't care what Mario's telling me about being a beacon of positivity.

29:51They have looked very average, and the expectation for Spain should be much higher than that. Alex, the mic is yours now.

30:00I can't compete with that depth of feeling. I mean, I'm not Spanish, so I don't feel it the same way that Mario does. Maybe I'm closer to Ali in terms of the perspective. Like I say, I was worried, but also it's a long tournament and lots of things can happen and the team can develop and there is still time to get things right. Okay, a lot more measured. Pass that microphone. Pass that microphone to Mario for one minute. This is working really, really well. You're a little bit upset about the physicality from Uruguay last night, Mario. I know that's where you did want to get to because Luis de la Fuente was definitely frustrated too.

30:35Yes, well, that's the... We know before the match that Uruguay were going to do that, to be tough, to be aggressive, to put a lot of intensity because in terms of football, they don't have nothing at all to create problems to Spain. And in the minute 55, you take out your best player like Valverde. when you need to win it's a bit risky from Bielsa's side but we know Bielsa that is overrated and maybe in the past here he was kind of modern but right now he's not achieving nothing and Uruguay does the I think is the worst World Cup in his history so well but Spain knew what was going to do Uruguay.

31:21They did it. The red card from Canovio was too late. I think he deserved the red card before. But well, to be honest, I agree with Ale and Alex that Spain needs to improve. But what I mean is that this kind of matches yeah, but this is show, you know.

31:43The reality is that they need to improve, but it's better to improve while you are winning and while you go through. But Uruguay didn't shot on target until the minute 85. I think it was a long shot that there was no problem tonight. It was not a good match of football, but Spain won. Spain won through, and Bielsa will go out, and Uruguay goes to home. OK, well, what would help is keeping Federico Valverde on the pitch now? He was hooked in the 57th minute, Ale. Yeah, and so it tells you that there is more to the story about Uruguay than just the lack of and the obvious lack of talent that they have on the field.

32:22Your best player is Fede Valverde. He's your team captain, and you're bringing him off the field very early on in the second half when you need to win the game. There was no interaction between Fede Valverde coming off the field and Marcelo Bielsa. They didn't even look at each other. It tells me that there are things bubbling. They're not underneath the surface. They're bubbling out and about with Uruguay. it was showcased in the manner in which they played. This is a team that was riding on emotion, and it wasn't good emotion. It was about the fight, which I also get to the fact that the refereeing in this World Cup, they've let a lot of things go.

32:56Last night was extreme. Last night was too much, a step too far. Referee is trying to let things go in a game that needed to be restrained because Uruguay were out there just to fight and to break somebody's leg. Canovio gets red-carded. He could have been red-carded to Mario's point sometime earlier in the first half. not the second half, to me, Uruguay were out of control. And that's the desperation of a team that knows nothing or knows that they don't have any other chance, any other opportunity. And they don't know what to do. And because they have nothing to do, they have desperation. And in desperation, you get to the violence, you get to the fight.

33:33That was Uruguay last night, very poor for them. And not just last night. Over the course of the tournament, they have been very poor and very disappointing. Valverde coming off in the 57th minute. I mean, we've seen some great goals for him from distance as well. They could have done with him, surely, to see out this game. Without question. It made absolutely no sense to anybody who knows this game. I'm with Ali. I think this substitution was more to do with whatever is happening behind the scenes within that Uruguay camp than it had to do with football. From a football perspective, it made absolutely no sense.

34:03But coming into this one, all the talk was about Uruguay and the disconnect between the players and Bielsa. and you felt that that Fred Valverde, because of who he is, because of who he plays for, would have been at the front lines for the Uruguayan players. That substitution confirmed exactly that for me, because otherwise it makes absolutely no sense. Mario, you were on commentary for this game. What did you think when you saw Valverde getting taken off?

34:33Well, I don't remember now, but we all know that it was something personal between Bielsa and Valverde. that Bielsa lost the control of the group a long time ago, not now. I knew, I had information that they offered him to sack him before the World Cup, but he wants his money, so he didn't refuse to his contract. And, well, that's the problem of Uruguay during this World Cup, apart from the injuries from Araujo, from Jimenez, from Derrascaeta. but the reality is that Bielsa, I think it was a good coach on the pass but he didn't, he don't know how to handle the groups and it was a big problem from Uruguay's side and Valverde is your best player and he said he changed him because he wants more in attack I don't know, but Valverde can score from everywhere he can play in every position so no sense at all Okay, let's get to the real story of that group though, shall we?

35:33Cape Verde are through to the knockout rounds. They were absolute scenes in Houston as they made it through to the round of 32 in their first World Cup. Smallest nation to qualify for the knockout rounds. Three draws it has been, and that has been enough to book them their spot against Argentina in Miami on July 3rd. And look at these fans celebrating. Xhaka, isn't this wonderful? And this was one of the obvious byproducts of the expanded format. There were concerns coming in, which I shared, and then all of a sudden, Cerverde shows up on the scene in their first World Cup up against Spain in their first World Cup game.

36:13And the story of the round was Vizinha, was Cerverde. And this is how they're rewarded. I think it's a fantastic story. Listen, they've exceeded all expectations by just being here to come away with three draws to get to the next round. At this point, regardless of what happens against Argentina, Cape Verde will feel that this has been an incredible summer for you. You guys get to see the Venezuelan jersey in the Cape Verde celebrations. That's as close as we got to the World Cup right there.

36:43I tell you who's been getting close to the food and the cuisine of North America is Alex Kirkland. He has been having himself quite a few times. Oh, wait a minute. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Is that all his? Wait a minute. All right. Okay. Yep. He's been having tacos in Mexico. I mean, Alex, tell us about this food experience. It's a culinary experience that you have been on. What a journey. Look, I like to immerse myself in the culture of whatever place I'm in. And so I've only had three days here. I had three short days here in Guadalajara, and I've made the most of it. Got some extraordinary tacos yesterday.

37:18Sidlow was there as well. He put a bit too much salsa on his tacos, and it got a bit hot for him. But, no, it was pretty special. I've got to come back and do some more research here in the very near future, I think. Research. So that's the food. It's about research. We want to also bring you a little bit of fashion, because we've had our research team on quite the task for the... Oh, right. Oh, hello. The generational V-neck line. We've got Frank Leboeuf, Stuart Robson bringing a double V-neck here. Xanise Gomez joined the show the other day. Dan Thomas got in on the action with a hairy chest down.

37:50Yes, yes. Very sexy. But who are they all following? Could it be... Max? Yes! Yes! Yes! The original! I'm the best. The OG. It was infectious though. Oh man. Oh no, that's sexy right there. The shades, the ocean in the back, you just can't. And that chest, that's shaving right there. That is smooth baby, that's smooth. Don't know what to do with that. They have no idea because they can't see these pictures. But Mario will remember. Lucky you Alex. Oh, I don't know. Oh, boy. Oh, wait a minute. Oh, oh, oh, you want a hairy chest? Oh, boy. Oh, you asked for it? Oh, boy. Send me the video. Send me the photo or the video, please.

38:43It was when you took us to your favorite beach bar in Mallorca at the beginning of last season. You were very chill. Ali Moreno decided to join the party with the V-neck show. And he's shaved his chest since then.

38:59The key player of that show was Ale, for sure. That's the start, the captain. Lovely stuff. OK, thank you so much, Mario and Alex. We will be hearing a lot more from you. Alex, make sure to put something in front of me. I'll be the key player for a lot of things. Thank you, guys. A plate of food in front of Alex, and he's a pretty happy guy too. Stick around. Can Ronaldo deliver again as Colombia face off to Portugal?

41:00In Group K, Colombia have won both World Cup group matches so far. They sit top with a perfect record and today they take on Portugal at the Miami Stadium. a Portuguese side who saw Cristiano Ronaldo make history with his two goals against Uzbekistan last time out. But Stuart Robson has decided to join us one last time at the sandbox. And the question is, what's the best way to use Ronaldo for Portugal? Thanks, Kate. Now, the big question is, how do you get the best out of Ronaldo or Portugal get the best out of Ronaldo? We know he can't run in behind. We know he doesn't link up the play. but what he can do is still score goals in what we would call the second six-yard box.

41:44So whenever the ball is played wide, Ronaldo has to find his space in that box. But how do you get into these zones here? Because that's where the crosses are going to come in from that are going to cause problems, because it doesn't give defenders enough chance to react. It's got to be when the ball is switched wide and Pedro Neto gets into these areas to get crosses in. And these are the sort of crosses whipped into these sort of areas where Ronaldo can do damage. How else can they do it? Switch and play. Ball coming out to the wide player, João Felix, he'll take it inside the overlapping runs of Nuno Mendes.

42:16Then when he gets in there, again, balls whipped into that zone in the second six-yard box. Another way of doing it is for the midfield player, when the ball's out wide, João Felix is out wide, Mendes is that little bit deeper and we see Kevin De Bruyne do it many, many times when he was playing for Belgium or when he was playing for Man City. The midfield player makes a run into those areas there for the ball played into the space. And then again, it's the cross there. The only way Ronaldo is going to be effective is in that second six-yard box. And Portugal have to get as many crosses as they can from those two areas there.

42:54If they do that, he's effective. If not, he's going to be a passenger. Robbo, back when we take a look at Cristiano. That's a lot of lines. In the last three major tournaments that he's featured in, we obviously got to see those two goals last time out against Uzbekistan in this current edition of the World Cup. In Euro 2024, no goals in five games. And in the last World Cup before this one, it was one goal in five games. And that was a penalty. But things are changing now because he did become a man who scored at six different World Cups. He's got a taste for it now, LA. and we're going to see more goals coming from Cristiano Ronaldo.

43:33Well, if all the things Stewie just mentioned there in the sandbox, then you give yourself every opportunity, but you need to find service for Cristiano Ronaldo. He's not creating for himself. He's not creating for others. He is there to be found by the service incoming from whoever on the right-hand side, on the left-hand side, from Bruno Fernandes from deep. He needs the service. Now, the matchup issue today for Cristiano Ronaldo is the physicality of Jean-Luc Umi and Davison Sanchez, the two center backs for Colombia, who will match Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of being able to get up in the air, in terms of getting tied to him.

44:09He is a presence inside the 18-yard box. And honestly, the heat map could not show it any better than it does here. That's where he wants to be. And that center back pairing has been really good in this World Cup. I think it's a challenge for Cristiano Ronaldo to find open spaces inside the 18-yard box when you're playing against these two center backs. You've just seen images of Colombia here. two wins from two. They'll be looking to see it out in style, won't they, Shaka? I certainly would expect you. And given who Portugal are showing themselves to be, I am not as hopeful of Ronaldo repeating his performance against Uzbekistan as certainly some on social media at the very least are.

44:46Don't get sucked in, Shaka. No, no, no. I'm just saying. I'm just saying. Now, the issue in this tournament, coming in, let's talk about France and Kylian Mbappe. all the talk was what can he offer on the other side of the ball now I'm going to ask those same questions to Cristiano Ronaldo and now with the greatest respect at 41 he can't and for as talented a midfield as Portugal may have without that striker who is offering at least some kind of defensive help it becomes really tough against top opposition and now Colombia two wins out of two are a very good team. If Ronaldo isn't able to give in in those departments, it makes it all the tougher for Portugal against this version of Colombia.

45:29And at Miami, in the Miami Stadium, those Colombian fans are going to be out in force, LA. They might as well be playing in Barranquilla, to be honest with you. The Colombian fans travel really well in the World Cup. But when you put a match in Miami, let me just tell you, it's going to be all Colombia all the time. I don't care how many Cristiano Ronaldo fans are out there. These Colombian fans will take over the stadium. In fact, they've taken over the studio with Kay's outfit today. It's all Colombia all the time. All Colombia all the time in terms of the crowd and in terms of the environment, in terms of the weather.

46:09One of the toughest environments to play in South America, it is indeed Barranquilla because of the heat and the humidity. Oh, I'm sorry. Let me think about heat and humidity. Miami! Miami! And so it really fits into the narrative that Colombia have an advantage going into this game. And all they need to do is draw the match in order for them to finish first. Seems like it's all Colombia. You think it's all Colombia. You believe in Colombia, don't you? Don't be fooled. Don't be fooled. Live on YouTube following Colombia against Portugal. We will have reaction on ESPN FC. be sure to catch it over there.

46:47Predictions coming up next. Wait a minute. There go the Lions. Oh boy. That looks okay. See you in a minute.

47:10NWSL action coming up on ESPN. And Sunday, July 5th at noon, Boston Legacy taking on Bay FC.

47:22Pitch Preview is brought to you by DraftKings Sports. Prediction time, and this is what we're looking at today. Croatia, Ghana, Panama, England, Colombia against Portugal, DR Congo taking on Uzbekistan, Algeria against Austria, and Jordan taking on Argentina. How do the team think it's all going to play out? Let's get started, Ale. Colombia against Portugal. Well, I cannot go against this aspect. But I don't think Colombia win the game either. So I'm going to sit right there on the fence. It's a draw enough for Colombia to finish first in the group. I actually think Colombia do win the game. So I'm going to go all the way over.

48:02Oh, oh, oh. Let's see what Jay does. I'll upset a few with that, but that's another story altogether. I'll be fooled by the rucks that I got. Oh, no! Oh, wow! Wow! Cristiano Ronaldo. He wore the whole kit. Yes, Columbia uniform. Well, you go. I'll go. You're taking too long. You're really tall, Shaka, by the way. I don't know if people have told you that. Again, sitting on the fence. My mom said it. She said, Shaka's even taller than I thought. I know, he is tall. But he was standing in the foreground that day. I think that helped as well. I don't know what we're talking about.

48:43Ah, a cow goes in it. Okay. You gonna move us over? I don't know. I can't see it. It's not... You started the wrong end. Ah, okay. What was that? Cutting edge analysis? Can we reset and do the whole thing? Can we reset and do the whole thing? Let's just reset and do the whole thing. Who did the Lions say is going to win? We gotta get to England, don't we? Well, the Lions didn't get to England. Well, and in all honesty, no, it's not there. It's not here. It's there. Lions, there's something. Okay, so we can tell you what we think is going to happen in this thing. Yes, well, first of all, if we're going to have the Lions pick, could we at least make sure that the flags are properly glued to the boxes?

49:32I'm just asking for basics. Lions! It's a bit picky. Lions aren't very good at gluing. And I thought it was three Lions. In Stockholm, we can never get the three Lions. We only get one Lion picking. One's enough, thanks. I'm going to take England. Okay. Checker? Yeah, England. Yeah, I mean, it has to be better than what we saw in the last game. But they're going to go. It's Panama. It's Panama. Croatia, Ghana. Next up, who have you got? Oh, wait. It's a bit like the microphone situation. We're just not going our way, all right? I'm just going to sit on the fence on this one as well. neither one of these teams really fill me up with a whole lot of confidence it's not going to be an entertaining game i'm going to take a draw draw draw as well all right there's nothing to convince me that it's going to be anything otherwise right now however what about the croatia fans getting involved in was it a proposal it's a wedding it's a full thing it's a full thing yes we're to crash a wedding.

50:35They were getting involved here. Crushing the wedding. I had to make for some good photos, though. They've got Philadelphia, LA. Look at that. All right, Group J is interesting as it stands right now. We know Argentina have topped the group. Don't expect to see Messi against Jordan today. But the battle for second is on between Austria and Algeria. Who have you got? I'm going to take Austria. Algeria, no, no, no. I'm going to sit on the feds. No, don't. I'm going to sit on the feds. Again? Yeah. I'm to draw Draw What about you? I'm to give off Austria You have Austria? Yeah It's going to be a draw I'm turning off Okay, Jordan against Argentina Oh We're having this conversation Yeah, I mean We're doing it Argentina 100 % Argentina Yeah It's hard to see anything other I say Argentina But picture the flags though They were there Just imagine And stay with us across the network For the rest of the day As we'll have reaction to all of those games And we'll see you tomorrow This episode is brought to you by Google Health.
