In short
The episode covers multiple matches and themes across leagues, focusing on Arsenal’s first loss and whether it’s a “blip,” plus Barcelona’s dominant form, and broader discussion of defensive/VAR trends in Europe.
Guests and backgrounds
Casey Keller (former goalkeeper, ESPN FC analyst), Shaka Hislop (former goalkeeper, ESPN FC analyst), Ian Darke (ESPN commentator based in Madrid), Luis Garcia (former Barcelona player), plus later Gab Marcotti (Extra Time host/analyst).
Key claims
Arsenal’s 3-0 defeat at Brighton showed no “response” after going behind; Brighton’s Pascal Groß and Konstantinou exploited Arsenal’s failure to step out defensively. The panel argues the result may be a temporary empty-tank moment, but future performances will confirm. Barcelona are framed as the best team in the world early on, with Rafinha’s hat-trick vs Sevilla as proof of their fluid system.
Notable examples
Brighton off Old Trafford form vs Man United; Arsenal conceding easy shots from 20-25 yards; Spurs’ defensive collapse vs Aston Villa (Villa 3-0 up); Barcelona 3-1 over Sevilla with Rafinha’s hat-trick; Serie A’s more open play tied to fewer VAR/penalty interventions.

34Welcome to the latest edition of ESPN FC. I'm Dan Thomas, joined by Casey Keller and Shaka Hislop. Arsenal were perfect, of course, going into their clash away against Brighton this weekend. Perfect, they are no longer. After a 3-0 defeat, the hosts completely dominated the game from start to finish. A couple of beautiful finishes from Costoulos and Pascal Groce was in brilliant form. No response at all from Arsenal. Brighton with the win. For more on this, let's welcome in Ian Darker. He's in Madrid ahead of the Madrid derby. But let's talk Premier League, shall we, Ian? Where did this come from?
09Well, it is a shock, isn't it? Or is it a shock? Because if you saw Brighton play the other night at Old Trafford against Manchester United, you know they can be scintillating. They played United off the park and they did something similar with Arsenal today. OK, you could argue if you're looking for a reason for Arsenal, it was their fourth away game in 10 days. maybe there was complacency, which Mikel Arteta has been hinting at after the match. But I think we probably should be talking about Brighton, you know. Could they do a Leicester City even? They're playing very, very well. And what about 35-year-old Pascal Gross, who must be one of the best spies in Premier League history?
47The concerning thing for me, if I'm an Arsenal fan, and it's been all roses so far, is that when they went 1-0 down, 2-0 down, there wasn't the fight that maybe we would associate with a championship side. Yeah, I think you've got to see how the story develops, I think, with this. I think every team who play a 38-game season, there's going to be a game or two like that where the tank looks a little bit empty. And I think that was probably the case for Arsenal here. Now that goes on into an international break. They've got three weeks to think about that and hope that they're better next time out.
25It probably is a blip, but it's interesting. A little twist in the plot. Ian, you talk about an empty tank, but they obviously rotated players for the midweek Carabao Cup game. This Brighton side, as you mentioned, had to go hard against Manchester United. That's a bit of an easy excuse, isn't it? Just say they were tired. Yeah, it is probably. That's a very good point you're making. they did rotate so but the players are not machines and occasionally there will be a bad performance but you know we're always making predictions about what we think is going to happen a year ago after the opening few games everybody was saying oh Liverpool aren't playing very well but they're winning every week they're going to skate to a defense of their title that never happened this year we're all saying look at Arsenal all the strength they've got in depth it's going to be a cakewalk for them it'll only be them and City now we've got to think again It's interesting, Shaq, because after the win against Sunderland, we were all sat going, wow.
22You know, Arsenal have taken that next step up because we remember what happened against Sunderland last year. Because they had more fight, they were more streetwise. And a response. Today, they didn't really have anything. Today, and one of the reasons we praised Arsenal for that performance against Sunderland was the response. After the David Reyes save penalty kick and how Arsenal just looked so much better, so much different from there on in. I will say it was sparked by the likes of Bruno Guimaraes and Declan Rice. And there were so many individuals on the day that you looked at and you praised their response.
55You praised that team performance. Today, you saw none of that. You saw none of that from either the team individually or as a collective. The surprising thing for me is how, I want to say, easy those goals came from. because in both the opening two goals, Konstantinou and Gros just sit in the half space and nobody from Arsenal defensively steps out. Inviting them to shoot from 20-25 yards. On the one hand, you want to say we've got arguably the best keeper in the league, in David Raya, have a shot from 25 yards. But surely, after the first time, you see what happens. You step out second time of asking.
40There was simply no adjustment. And again, this leans into the lack of response from Arsenal as the game developed. And they pay the price for it. Is it a blip or something more serious, Case? I think we'll find out in their next performance. Because, I mean, I think if you see teams can have a bad result. And then if they correct it and go on and go six games, ten games unbeaten, you go, OK, it's a blip. if then it's a loss in Champions League and then it's a cup slip up and then it's another draw at home against a team you should probably beat yeah then you think okay it's a blip but I'll give them a blip until they prove that it isn't we've now got the longest international break in the history of the world Ian this isn't ideal timing to have that blip is it?
33No it really isn't I mean you can argue it's good to get all the international games that have to be played this autumn out of the way in this break. But it does seem a long, long time when the season's just getting going to break off for as long as this. Yes, indeed. For Arteta, he's got time to reflect as well on this. A lot of time. And I think that's the, well, maybe difficulty. Maybe it can be the gift in this long international break that you've started the season so wonderfully well. You have this performance. Now you have to sit back and let that kind of marinate over the next couple of weeks.
10Or, which I'm sure is what Mikel Arteta, his approach will be, let's have a very long, very analytical look at what went wrong and let's work to put it right. And I know a lot of the players will be aware of international duty themselves. But it's still a good position to be in. Listen, Arsenal have lost one game. There's no need for panic. They'll get it right. But it just, given how good they'd been, this just felt like a surprise. You knew going to Brighton was a tough test, but this result, this performance, just was a little bit of a shock to the system. I think it shows a lot of competitiveness as well throughout the league.
49I don't think it's going to be a season where you're winning the league because nobody else is pushing you. I think there's going to be plenty of teams, I think, that are going to cause problems where you're not just going to be able to go, well, let's look on the fixture. OK, we play Manchester City this week, but we've got all the rest of these kind of easy matches. I don't think that's going to be the case. I think whoever wins it this season is going to have to have as few a blips as possible. Obviously, it's one game and Arsenal fans will be shouting at us for being anti-Arcel and everything, Ian.
26but we just saw what Barcelona did and we've seen what Barcelona have done and whether you like it or not Arsenal want to be in the same conversation as Barcelona and PSG and Bayern Munich when it comes to Europe these sort of performances where you just lack so much spark could really bite you in the butt obviously when it comes to the Champions League going deep yeah like Casey said though let's see how the story develops with this it's one game where they basically didn't really turn up didn't look like Arsenal and the aura of invincibility well you know they're not as previously advertised perhaps they are capable of putting in a bad performance and I think we've seen that here today and I think that's one thing about the Premier League if you are just maybe two or three percent down on what you can normally produce you're liable to pay the price for that because the teams further down are capable of springing shocks.
22Still it could be worse So you could be Spurs fans, obviously. You knew it was coming. Look at this. Spurs scored, but couldn't win. Aston Villa defeated the Serbis side by three goals to two. Villa were actually 3-0 up. They'd already pretty much wrapped up the victory before Spurs got those two consolation goals. Ian Dark is still with us, but let's start with the former Spurs man, shall we? That's you, Casey. Oh, thank you.
53it's clearly not what ownership we're looking for um when they spent in the summer when they fought off relegation two years in a row the expectation was we're gonna take off the financial restrictions we're gonna go make sure that this doesn't happen again And the question mark has to be if you're lacking leadership, if you're lacking fight, why did you not buy leaders and buy fighters? And sprinkle in the players that Spurs fans are used to seeing. I mean, I was thinking about it the other day and I was thinking about Spurs because obviously we went so long again, almost, you know, three quarters of this match before they scored.
40I'm thinking, all right, I'm looking back with Teddy Sheringham, Les Ferdinand, Jurgen. Then kind of in my time after Teddy and Les, then a couple guys like Robbie Keane, Jermaine Defoe. Then let's go a little further, and some kid named Harry Kane comes through, and Gareth Bale comes in, and Son. I mean, there's always been a case of Spurs are going to be exciting and goal dangerous. Maybe concede a little bit, but, you know, we'll concede a couple goals based off of, but we're going to be fun to watch and we are going to score goals. But at some stage, where's that balance between where's the guys that are going to score goals?
25Where's the guys that are going to fight and, you know, get you a result? And I'm worried. Yeah. Yeah, I'm real worried. Casey is very kind here. And listen, I thought at times Spurs, given the fact that he hadn't scored all season long, looked good up front with that front three of Solanke, Mamosh. And I thought Savio was really good on the day. Suzuki was an outstanding form in that first half. And he was the difference between the two. And then all of a sudden, Spurs just pressed the self-destruct defensive button. And listen, we've been scathing about Chelsea defensively over the last week or two.
07I don't think Spurs can or should be spared here. Now, Andy Robertson, talking about leadership and experience. OK, 46 minutes. You don't want to give up a corner at that point just before the break. But you don't just have the ball kind of lamely back into play. And then all of a sudden now you find yourself one down. The second goal just comes from one long ball that somehow has Van Hecker and Van de Ven in an absolute twist. Two outstanding defenders who just seem to forget what it means to defend. And then the attempted block shot from Van Hecker was similarly poor. Then the third goal. Buendia just sits in the half space.
48Tonali, who you spent 100 plus to buy, and Madison. run and stand right on top of the back four. So now Bueh-Dier is standing in 10 acres of space and then Madison turns his back on the block. These are three of the most basic defensive goals that you give up. Now you're struggling at the wrong end of the season. You can't score a goal. Finally, you look like you're going to score a goal. What you cannot do is forget the basics of team defending. And that's what Spurs did. It wasn't supposed to be like this, Ian. It wasn't supposed to be like this. I mean, you heard Casey mention some of the stars who've played for Spurs.
30You could throw in Gary Lineker, Chris Waddle, Glenn Hoddle, Paul Gascoigne. On and on you go. Famous club. And they could be bottom of the table by tomorrow night. I think the big problem there is there's a huge psychological block for them, I think, now playing at home. Their home record has been absolutely dreadful now for a long time. You saw all the fans streaming out. And yeah, they had the chances. Nothing went in for them early on. Then Villa go ahead. And from that point, I think they just look very, very fragile. The confidence was shot to pieces and they've lost again. So you just wonder where that story is going for Roberto Di Zerbi.
11They can't just carry on firing managers, can they? Posta Koglu, Thomas Frank, can't go on like that. A word on Villa, a much-needed win there. First of the season, of course, Ian. Yeah, Aston Villa, I think they're getting their act together. Unai Emery is a very, very good operator. You might remember they started last season very badly and ended up finishing in fourth place and qualifying for the Champions League. Not saying that's going to happen again, because I don't think it will, but I think you're going to see Villa climbing the table now. I can't believe, Ian, they're kicking you out to bring in McAlealy and Maka.
47What have they ever done? Well, yeah, exactly. What have they ever done? Well, the greatest holding midfield player ever. And, you know, we all adore Macca. So, yeah, they'll be much better company than me. Ian, thank you very much, mate. Enjoy the commentary tomorrow. It should be a cracking game. 15:11Barcelona looking to maintain their perfect style for the season, and arguably their biggest test of the campaign so far. Away against Sevilla at the Sanchez Pijuan. Good first half, Sevilla 4, it was 1-1, but then Barcelona just ran away with it in the second half. Rafinha with a perfect hat-trick to continue his sensational start to the season. Let's welcome in, shall we, Luis Garcia, former Barcelona player, who is absolutely loving it at the moment, Luis, and why not? They are the best team in the world, and there isn't really a question about it at the moment. No, I don't think so, Dan. I think that we all enjoy everyone who loves football and needs to have to enjoy this momentum that Barcelona is in.
53I think they've been brilliant the whole start of the season. We saw what they've been doing for the past two years. We had a lot of talks and discussion about Hansi Fleur, his eye line, that intensity on the field, the problem that they face later in March when they arrived, some of the players are not involved, the last stage of the Champions League. But right now, at the moment, by what we can see, the results and the numbers, we have to say that Barcelona is probably the best team in the world. The first 45, they were quite intense. I think that Sevilla did a pretty good job, really good shape.
28They managed to hold Barcelona. They wasn't having that fluidity that we are used to see. Petri wasn't getting involved, and when he was involved, he was a little bit sloppy. Anthony Gordon on the left side didn't appear. and La Minha was confronting a few moments with the crowd, with the players, with the faults, because Sevilla was trying to be physical. And in the second half, when the intensity of Sevilla dropped a little bit, then it's when Barcelona started pushing higher, controlling more and dominating more, and the goals were arriving. What to say about Rafinha? I think we talked a lot about it.
00I think that he's right now one of the best players, if not the best player in the world. He's in a great moment. He's confident. is unbelievable because the two goals, I mean, today he was the top center forward. I mean, a player who can go in the air, who can run to the space, who can capitalize the chances with the right foot, with the left foot, with the head. Everything that he did today, it was top notch. And that's why right now we have to say that I employ him as the leader of this Barcelona side and top scorer of La Liga and a player who makes a difference when he's on the ball. So, yeah, all good news for Barcelona.
38The only bad news was that injury from Christensen. It looks like he pulled the thigh and it will be out for a little bit. But the rest of it, any player who gets involved into the game, just add something extra. And I think that's what Hansi Flea has been trying to build. A team that it doesn't matter who is involved. They understand what they have to do and they deliver every single weekend. You called it actually at halftime, Kaysen, when we were talking about how resilient Sevilla were in the opening. you said, let's see what energy they have in the second half. Because to play like that against Barcelona for 90 minutes is near on impossible because you're trying to contain them all the time and there's only so much gas in the tank.
15There is. And, you know, it's still a little bit warm in Sevilla this time of year. It was in the 80s. You saw in the end 70 % possession. Granted, Schock and I watched a lot of guys run, But it's always easier to run with the ball than it is without the ball. And there's just that time over and over again, running, running, running. And I think what happened, because they were a little more tired, they didn't control the second balls in the second half the way they did in that first half, which then gave more of the ball to Barcelona, which then gave more of the opportunity to make the runs off the ball.
55And then when you have the quality of finish, first of all the quality of the setup from Laminya Mall off of winning a second ball in the box but then having three guys around you and finding a way to put a perfect cross in for Rafinha then the perfect pass when you think I know he's going to check and run I know he's going to do it and I can't do anything about it Rafinha scoring the perfect hat trick yeah Xhaka. Lionel Messi didn't do that at all during his 32 hatchets. How was that? How was that a thing? You were saying before that that makes for you, Rafinha, better than Messi. Oh, boy. I have no idea how we got here.
38I tell you what, Shaq, if you had to pay to watch anyone at the moment. Right now he's the best player in the world. He's so full of confidence. Just seems to be in the right place at the right time. And he's such a non-traditional number nine. that he's giving defenses more problems than they used to. He can drop off and pick up the ball in the half spaces. As you saw again twice, he can run off the shoulder of defenders. And once he does get that right side, once he is onside, you cannot catch him. And you saw for a second, he just has that timing and that instinct of a normal number nine. So the question becomes, how do you play Rafinha?
18How do you play up against this Barcelona? You've seen the approach from Sevilla today to try to press a little bit higher up, to try to be a little bit more aggressive. You've seen earlier this season teams kind of dropping off and playing in a low block. And the result has been the same to the point. Sevilla only conceding three. You almost want to celebrate that kind of given what we've seen so far this season. And Barcelona have just been the best team bar none. I know the caveat is they haven't faced any true tests so far this season. This is a true test. going for the Severe best defense in La Liga.
55Between Sevilla and Bilbao, decent teams. They won by two. Two Clegos in both those games respectively. But still, just everything that Barcelona have to throw at you, I really don't know what the correct approach is. Let's just sit back and enjoy it while it lasts. I keep praying. I think it's about the best approach. I don't want to kick it. Luis, it's interesting the point that Xhaka brings up. He says he won't trust Barcelona until they play someone decent. Is that fair? Because that's been shared by others as well. Yeah, well, I think that so far the games that they play, they've been quite easy to play.
40They were quite soft. They haven't been tested probably. Because it's true that sometimes you get exposed. Sometimes they concede. And today they could have conceded one or two goals. and the previous game exactly the same, but they are not doing it. They maybe conceded one or maybe not many chances, but in the end, this Barcelona side, I think, and I agree with the guy, they haven't been tested. They probably in Champs League later on when the big teams arrive and they have to put everything, and then we will realize really what it is, the best 11 for this Barcelona side, because at the moment, we don't know if it's Gordon or Adeyemi.
15It's that partnership in the middle with Fermin and Dani Olmo is the right one. The other team, I think, at the back, maybe you have some doubts. So, so far, we've seen a very good Barcelona, but I agree with the guys. I think they haven't been tested properly. We'll need to wait and see. Luis, good man. Thank you very much, of course. Now, Barca 6, six points clear at the top of the table. Real Madrid looking to close that gap. But, of course, they're going to get past Atletico Madrid first. That game live tomorrow. And we'll be looking ahead to it later on in the show.

16you had best attack against best defense in Serie A. Roma, as you mentioned, rushing out to that lead. I thought Inter had their chances. Remember, Roma coached by Gasparini, was at Atalanta all those years with their attacking football. He seems to have found the right formula. He's even getting a tune out of Dybala. But Inter had those chances towards the end of the first half. We didn't see them in the highlights, but you had Jan Bissek one-on-one. You had Bastoni off a Curtis Jones back heel, no less, at the far post. So the opportunities were there. I think Roma just ran out a little, just ran out of gas a little bit.
55And Inter, of course, have the lautado factor as well. Yeah, Inter just kind of flexing their muscles, as you say, Gab, in that second half coming from behind the missed chances in the first half. So to suggest, obviously, they are favorites to go all the way. Roma, maybe we'll just crack towards the end. I think on paper that that's how a lot of people are reading it. Don't forget Lazio won today as well. They're right up there at the top of the table. Como could be as well. But no, I mean, you're right. Inter are the favorite team. I think the main question people are going to ask is how much is the Champions League going to take out of them?
33Because obviously, you know, this is a deep team. But they're not necessarily perfect all around top to bottom. one position that perhaps lacking a little bit, and we saw a little bit today, Cialanoglu being out, is sort of that one-on-one quality in the middle of the park, maybe a number 10 type who can create out of nothing when defenses sit back, which isn't what Roma did, of course. Maybe that player's lacking a little bit. No, but beyond that, Keeve was doing a phenomenal job. Even a guy like Andy Juve, who's been the starter as Jed Spence, is injured again, rewarded with a call-up to the French national side as well.

13I thought he played very well. Inter do look a step ahead from everybody else. But you know what? The table doesn't line. The others are right there with them, and I think they'll be ready to pounce. Gab, you mentioned it at the start. We're seeing games with goals in Italy this season. What's happened? Why has the handbrake come off? You seem surprised. I think there's a number of reasons. One, what you're also seeing is a lot fewer penalties and a lot fewer VAR interventions and fouls. Some of the data, ball and play time in Serie A was the highest in Europe. This is a conscious decision by the new head of referees, Daniel Orsato, who's basically said, no, no, no, VAR only steps in for serious stuff.
00We don't like the little cheap penalties. We don't like the penaltitos, as they call them in La Liga. We're going to let more stuff run. We're going to be more physical. I only think we had the first 0-0, I think, in match day four in Serie A. And I think also, as a result, more teams, and you're seeing this, maybe not so much the big teams, although there are some examples, like Cisse at Milan, for example. But mid-table and lower down, they're saying, you know what? Let's give the kids a grow. Let's take the handbrake off. It is three points for a win. and I think that's certainly filtering through in what we've seen.
35I mean, cracking entertainment thus far. I can't promise that it's going to be like this all season long. So, you know, don't take it up with me. Yeah, Gab, I imagine this has been received well. As you say, the penalty, Shaq was talking about it when we were watching the Barcelona game. Obviously, every league is official differently, but where you get less interference, it seems to be more entertaining.
59I think there's a sense that this season, you know, they're saying, well, this is maybe what fans want. And as long as we're consistent with it. I mean, remember, you know, there was that incident with the De Bruyne goal earlier this season when against Genoa. And when, you know, he seemed to put it to shove the Genoa defender, Johan Vazquez. That was match day one. And people are like, wait, why wasn't that a call? Was it just what they call a coming together here in the Premier League? Why isn't that a foul? and basically the vibe's like, no, no, we're going to be consistent in not calling those.
30We are going to allow more physicality and see how people respond. And I think so far, people like it. I mean, I think we've gone so far down the VAR rabbit hole and, you know, sort of 99 different camera angles and replays and whatever else that the whole message has been put the referee, let the referee decide, and VAR only steps in in certain situations. and as a baseline, we accept it's a physical game and we're going to allow more physicality. And so far, people have responded well. Yeah, it's certainly been very entertaining for the neutral. Gav, thank you very much. Gav will be back with us on Extra Time.
08We'll take it to Udinese against Calgary as Daniel Mardini with the interesting defender. Well, that's one way to put it. But you could credit any number of players with being interesting or disinterested, multi-point. I like to have a little chat. Yeah, I like to. Oh, is that me? What's that fool doing here? What are you doing for dinner later? Maldini then with the goal. And that was the only goal of the game as well. Lazio, as I mentioned, level on points now with Inter and Roma after that 2-0 win away against Vinicius. Barca win again beating Sevilla by three goals to one Rafinha the man of the match with the hat-trick for more let's hear from Gemma who caught up with Hansi Flick after the game Yes you are with Rodri after probably the most complicated victory of Barcelona so far this season how do you evaluate the whole game?
09Well as you said the most difficult one by far they we struggled a little bit in the first half I think I think we didn't read well where the game was. I think we lost a lot of easy balls and that's what they want. You know, the pitch was a bit difficult to play, so you have to play more safe, these kind of games, and we try to pass quick pass and the last pass and the last pass and the last pass. At the end, they recover lots of balls and they punish us first with a goal and with another chance. I remember one I take out also very, very close. We have to pay attention to these details. I think with Hansi, with the words of him in the half-time, we changed and we did a great second half.
53Did you say to the players in the midfield after the first 45 minutes? Because it was a very intensive game in that period. Yes, of course, we have to keep the ball better. The passes were not good and, as I said before, it was easy ball loss. It was not the level we normally want to play, and the second half was much better. To ask you about Rafinha, it's impressive, almost unbelievable, that he never played as a number nine. You met him on the Premier League, of course, at Leeds. What do you think about him and this transformation? Well, it talks about how this player has developed through the years, in his mindset, in his leadership, in the way he understands football.
36I think right now he's the guy who's scoring, the guy who's pressing, the guy who's doing kind of everything. And he's a bit the soul of the team in this way. Nobody is surprised that the good player is Rafinha. But as a very good striker, have you surprised? No, I'm not surprised. I see him every training. So he's unbelievable. His dynamic is top and when he can attack the space they give us, it's amazing. So that impressive victory puts Barcelona six clear of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga table. They're in action on Sunday at the Metropolitano against Atletico Madrid. Kay Murray will be there for us.
24She's just born a couple of people off the street, she's found. Kay? Yeah, just a couple of people that I pulled in off the street here. You know, legends at Real Madrid, Claude McAlealy and Steve McManaman. Claude, we're delighted to have you on with us. Sorry that you've got to sit next to Steve. Oi. Oi. What was it like playing with him? Amazing. Amazing. Amazing. Good player. All the time I say in England, how nobody talk about this guy. He's the best English player ever. Love that. Isn't it nice, isn't it? It is nice. It is nice when people say nice things. So we've just seen there, Claude, six points ahead.
05Barcelona have gone. Real Madrid really need to win this game against Atleti tomorrow. How do you see Real Madrid in this clash? I think we are the beginning. I think the more important for Real Madrid is not losing this game because it's a derby first of all. and I think for win the Liga you have time, you have time. But I think for the fans, for the club, for the players, it's very important Real Madrid win this game. Also for sure, they won't be there for this competition. It's very important for Mourinho, first of all. First of all, for the players and the club because the decision the president make for being more here in this club is very important and many people talk about it but I think it's been a good decision I think the thing is Kay is that when you see Barcelona starting the season so well and you see them this evening on six points clear and you almost look ahead and you think who's going to actually beat them so Madrid have already lost sorry Real Madrid have already lost to Betis this year.
19They've got a difficult game where they normally struggle. In the last couple of years they normally struggle at the Metropolitano. Are they going to lose more points? And then that brings it forward after the International Betis, the Classico. And if they struggle then they could be six, they could be nine points behind. And then what happens to Mourinho? What happens then? Because Florentino of course brought Mourinho in to do one job and it's to finish above Barcelona. But Barcelona have started this year like a team you know, twice, three times better than they were last year with Rodri coming and Adi Amy and Anthony Gordon.
54Everybody sort of, you know, excels when they come onto the pitch. So the pressure is on Los Blancos tomorrow. I mean, a huge amount of pressure on Jose Mourinho and the team. They need to go out tomorrow and win. But what approach will they need to take then? Does it matter? Like, can they be defensive against this Atleti side? No, normally you would say no. Normally you'd say they have to go on the attack. But this year, what we've seen of Real Madrid is 45 minutes good, 45 minutes bad. Do we start defensive? Do we start attack minded? You know, I saw them in the Champions League and they were 30 % possession to Inter Milan.
30They won the game, but they won the game quite fortunate. I saw them against Elche. They were great in the first off, poor in the second off. I saw them against Betis where they struggled to get a victory in the end. I saw them get last minute winners. You know, how long can this persist? they have to be very positive. They have to show a real performance for 90 minutes of quality of we're going to take over the game, we're going to show you as boss, exactly like Barcelona have done in every single game, even the away games, and show their excellence. They brought in five players last year, they brought in six players this year.
04Show us what you need to do now. And that's the big question. We're all waiting. Yes, we know there's a transformation. We know they all have to gel together. We understand that completely. We've done it all ourselves. But it has to happen sooner rather than later because Barcelona are brought, as I said before, Rodri, are they aiming, aren't they, Gordon, etc., etc., etc. And they seem to have just excelled straight away. Claude, who are you looking out for to have a good game for Real Madrid? What would you like to see from the likes of Mbappe and the attack here? I think it's a good team. I think this kind of player, the way Maka said, there is no one possibility to win this game.
46It's very important. The way he said, Barcelona is five years. They have working in a good way, system. They bring all the time the player key. Like Rodriques, they put him there because they need this kind of player for win against the Liga. I think this team, Mourinho need to have, what do you say, take his chance, put the best player attacking for winning this game. For starting a show, Barcelona will be there. Claude, would you play Ardegula right midfield or would you play Yandy Amandi? He's only young, he hasn't played a lot. Against Atletico Madrid or would you be a bit more defensive? I would be offensive, I would put Yandy.
32Yes, you'll be offensive. No, offensive. Because for me, it's very important. For sure, your opponent, you will be there. You need to demonstrate the way you're attacking and you destroy the defence. The way Barcelona, they do, Madi need to start a show now. Because it will be too late. Because the way you say Barcelona, you can't have 20 points. And do you think, do you think Chouameni, who's French, like, well, when you play for the French national team, and Valverde. Do you think that's enough defensively? No, because for me, the system is not yet. Tactically, for Swamini, takes a decision to stay there because Swamini have capacity to stay.
20Valverde needs to go. He needs to go. Yeah, yeah. It's going to be interesting. We're going to hear from you tomorrow, so I don't need to get your prediction tonight. But I do need to get Claude's prediction for the Derby. Athlete against Real Madrid. What's your score prediction, Claude? I'm from Madrid. For me, it's very important Madrid win because I like the way Moino walk now, the way he can't help this team, he can't help this club because it's like two years of struggling, they know in La Liga. It's very important for Real Madrid win tomorrow. I would say 3-2. 3-2? I love that. Anyway, we'll let these guys get back to the street now, Dan.
04Yeah, cheers, Dan. Thank you, mate. Thank you. Straight to bed, Maka. Get your nice early rest for tomorrow. Save your voice. As always, mate. Yeah, yeah, yeah. God, I can't believe we got him on at this time. Fair enough. It's Madrid. Real Madrid then against Atletico Madrid tomorrow. Maka on the call along with Ian Dahl. K will be pitch side with Luis Garcia. Our coverage starts 10 a.m. Eastern on ESPN2. Harry Douglas here. Game day brings the excitement. Your stay should feel just as memorable. That brings us to the end of today's show. We welcome Gav Marcotti back for Extra Time to answer your questions alongside Casey and Shaka.
49Welcome to the latest edition of Extra Time. Gab Mark Cotty joins us along with Shaka Hisslop and Casey. Why have you got the old skull and crossbones on today on the tie? Any particular reason? No. No? Just a bit of a pirate-y move? There we go. There it is. Thank you. Casey, if you're in charge of the VAR system, what is the first thing you've changed in the Premier League? I would make it extremely apparent that clear and obvious is clear and obvious. Nothing drives me more crazy when that is supposed to be the initiative. and then they spend five minutes looking at a call. How can it be clear and obvious if you're spending five minutes looking at a call?
25It should be exactly that. And, you know, Gab talked about it earlier about Italy kind of making sure that VAR is a necessity, not micromanaging the referee. So to me, if it's clear and obvious, it's clear and obvious. Go have a look. Nope. Okay, done. Go. And I'd also love to see the referee not be afraid to say to VAR, I'm good, thank you. As opposed to almost like, well, they've called me and then I don't want to make them look bad, so I don't want to say no. No, say I'm the ref. No, no, go away. Kind of gave us two there, Casey. Minus one. You're welcome. Casey's very fish on top, Casey. Gab, how good has Manu Kone been for Roma?
10Of course, he scored a brace today in that great 2-2 draw against Inter. Will it be difficult for Roma to keep him the whole season and not lose him during the January transfer window? Well, I mean, as you know, he was linked with a number of moves. Roma held out for a higher price and he stuck around. So he's obviously somebody, he was super highly rated, I think, when he was like 19 or 20 years old. And then maybe had a couple of years where he didn't grow as quickly as people thought he was when he was still in Germany. But then since he's been at Roma really for the last sort of nine months, I'd say, he's been tremendous.
50Obviously, we saw him with France at the World Cup. The free kids have a lot of money and they're not afraid to throw that money around. Roma right now are compliant with financial stability rules. So I actually don't think he's going to go anywhere in January unless they get a ridiculous offer. provided, of course, Roma are still in the mix for the title in Serie A, which I would imagine they will be. USMN team calling up youth for international matches, KC. Which youngster excites you the most ever too early to bring in youth to the camp? Sullivan, Hall? No, Sullivan, Gozo. I mean, I think, like anything, I think if you're succeeding, then you, and that's the next step up.
33The thing that disappoints me, and we talked about a little bit of this on Football America the other day, is I don't want to see the youth guys come up and then not have the standard of the rest of the team with them. Because what had kind of happened is you have some call-ups that aren't there. You know, there's no Pulisic. If you have a young player and you have a young player who has to be, I want him to go up against the standard bearer in that position and say, let's see how you match up here. Not just kind of called in and have a bunch of other kids your same age. And that's what I'm a little worried about, that this camp is kind of half veteran, half kids.
13I would have rather seen 80 % veteran, 90 % veteran, 10 kids to be able to then go, okay, we now get a really good gauge of how they match up against the senior players. But it's some tough games, this window. Yes. Well, on paper. On paper, yeah. Granted, it's... Because the other team could do the same thing and bring a bunch of kids in as well. or four-year cycle, but they've got some tests in there. I think it'll be interesting. The most goals scored in any European top five seasons is Messi's 50 back in 2012. How many games before Rafinha breaks that record? So what's he got? 12 goals at the moment.
52And two and... So 12 goals divided by seven, that's 1.7. 1.7 times 38. So what's that? 65 goals he would get if he continues at this rate? Is that right? 50 more? Come on, Gab. Yeah, the 50 the most in La Liga. Get your calculator out. Yeah, I think 65 goals he's averaging if he continues this. I think the record's not 50. In La Liga, let's just say La Liga goal is... Didn't Cristiano also hit 50? He got 48, I believe. Gab. All right. Okay. Well, anyway, let's go to the question. I broke it down beautifully with my mathematical skills that people seem to have completely ignored. Gab, how many goals will Rafinha get in La Liga this season?
42Well, I don't think he's going to get 50. I think he'll still be really important if he gets... I mean, he's obviously been phenomenal, but I don't think Flick's plan is to play him up front all season long. Why not? Why would you not play him up front all season long, Gab, when he's doing that? Who's the other striker? Because you have other players. I mean, and I think the way they're going, who can play up front? No, who can score the goals at the same rate that Rafinha is? Well, you don't need one guy to score the same goals at the same rate as Rafinha. What you need is a team that wins. And I think if Barcelona go deep in the Champions League, if they've developed, especially if they have a decent lead in La Liga, which I would expect they might be, I don't think we're going to see Rafinha play center forward and get kicked as much as he is now.
39Certainly not in the league games. I think at that point, we might see room for Hamza. We might see Anthony Gordon through the middle. We might see Adeyemi through the middle. We might see Fermin through the middle. We might see other solutions. If Rafinha has to play center forward all season long, that's definitely suboptimal. I don't think he's getting 50 goals. 50 goals is pretty superhuman. And that's why very few people have done it. I didn't know you didn't like Rafinha, Gab. What's your beef with him? I like Rafinha a lot. But if you put him in the same standard, if your measuring stick is Lionel Messi versus Rafinha playing a position he hasn't really played until this year, I think it's kind of absurd to suggest that Rafinha is going to outscore Lionel Messi's finest goal-scoring season in La Liga.
28I'm sorry if I think Lionel Messi has been better at scoring goals throughout his career than Rafinha. I don't believe that's a controversial decision, Dan. You got a perfect hat-trick today, Gab. Messi never did that at Barca. Take that. Oh, boy. Oh, boy. Come on, yeah. So, did you give me a number, Gab, in the end? A number for what? How many goals is he going to get this season? How many goals? What is this nonsense? I don't know how many goals are there. he was going to get. Oh, right. I would imagine he'll get 25 goals. And I thought, oh, what a nice show we're going to have. And then you bring your Burley hat in.
07And they go, you're dropping Rafinha. Bro, it's September. Yes, it's a nice one. He projects these things out. We've got three weeks of international break coming up. This is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to two questions, I promise you. Right, Gaz refusing to answer. Can you give me a nice... Only La Liga goals. 42. 42. 42. Yeah. I think he'll be around 40. Do you know what a producer just said? He's on the course of 65. I said that at the start of the question. Because Ardan is very good at math. Oh, God. He's grumpy because of Spurs. Yeah. Yeah. True. He was grumpy because the Zerb said he didn't speak to the players after the loss.
49What's he going to say to them? See you in three weeks.
55Casey, do you feel the best part... Oh, no, we're talking about Rafinha. Don't worry, Gab, I won't go to you on it. Oh, God. Casey, do you feel that the best part of Rafinha's career has been wasted by coaches deploying him as a wide player, seeing how ridiculously good he is as a number nine? I think he's a wide player. I think what's different is this is a very unique setup with Barcelona. There's such fluidity within the team of being able to move positions. and when Barcelona kind of did not get Júlain Alvarez it kind of left this little hole like who was going to play the number nine role and I think Rafinha has matured so well you know as a leader as a pro as the guy he said yeah okay I'll do that role he wouldn't say it was like a 30 second conversation with Hansi Flick Hansi Flick said look you're alright playing for the centre or do you want to play wide and he goes I'll play for the centre yeah I'll play centre cool but it's not played like a typical number nine.
59He'll be wide, he'll come in, someone will cover for him, he'll track back. And so I think it's been a perfect storm and he's been tremendous. Gab, why are you covering your face? No, it's this idea, even this idea that Casey Dale, the way he's playing up front, it's obviously the system has a lot to do with it. And it's not like he's sitting there and being Robert Lewandowski and sitting in the box and waiting for service. You know, he's moving around. He's doing different things. I would imagine at some point Laminya Ma goes on a scoring streak and Rafinha drops off. Or maybe it's for me. Why do you want to see it drop off?
40Maybe it's somebody else. What's wrong? Because I love Messi so much. He can't break Messi's record, Dan. Woo-hoo, Messi. Final question. What are you guys doing for the year-long international break? It's going to feel like it. Chaka. I'm going to be here, Dan. You've planned that badly, considering a man who likes a trip.
10I've got no trips planned, Dan. What's the matter here? But now, Dan. Casey? You might see me pop on the show from an Idaho location. Very nice. Very good. Casey's going to a posh wedding as well. We can't talk about that. NDAs galore. Oh, boy. Forget the Swifty Kelsey one. It's bigger. Thanks, Dan. That's Gav. Gav, what are you doing for the international break? I'll be watching football. It's what I get paid to do. What's wrong with you? I actually like... He does have his burly hat off. He does. He's like, you know what? That is longer... I thought as Messi's retired from international football, you wouldn't bother at a protest.
57I'm sure MLS will just keep playing because that's what they do, play through the money. I mean, they played through the World Cup just about a couple of years ago, didn't they? So, no, and you know what? I'm going to be watching the under-20 Women's World Cup where Italy, having beaten the United States earlier in the competition, the group stage, in fact, they're through to the semifinal. Oh, wow. So I'm kind of excited for that. So there, I'll kick that off and then move on to the men's senior internationals. Well, we know he's not going to be watching Rafinha with Brazil. No, definitely not.
31What have you been doing, Daniel? I'm here. I'm here. With me, Dan. Lucky you. For some reason, Burley hasn't taken a vacation. Can you imagine Craig doing an extended international break? Well, we're going to find out, Shaq, what a wonderful moment it is. I just punched myself in the liver. Right, thank you very much, everyone. I appreciate it. ESPN FC returns tomorrow.
