In short

The episode centers on major Premier League award and transfer-window talking points, with heavy focus on Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes and their early-season problems, plus debates about several high-profile signings.

Guests

Alexis Yunes (host); Stevie Nichol (former player/analyst); Mark Ogden (football writer); Don Hutchison (former player/analyst). They discuss Bruno Fernandes winning the PFA Players’ Player of the Year, then pivot to United’s 1st-match loss to Hull City and whether the same defensive/set-piece issues persist.

Key claims

Fernandes’ PFA win is “100% deserved” because he topped charts and broke records (assists) last season; the PFA voting timing was changed to reflect the full season. United’s issues are recurring: poor away-game control, conceding early, set-piece weakness, and defensive unpredictability (including a cited Maguire incident). They also argue United’s midfield signings may not solve core problems.

Notable examples

Hull City exposing United’s away approach; Maguire “wrestling” a teammate at a corner; PFA team-of-the-year debate (Ryan Cherki criticized vs Morgan Rogers); transfer discussions on Savio to Tottenham, Carlos Baleba to United, Nico Gonzalez to Newcastle, Liam Delap to Nottingham Forest, and Nico/Enzo speculation for Man City.

0:30Hello there, everyone. Welcome into our ESPN FC studios for a fresh edition of the show. I'm Alexis Yunes alongside the one and only Stevie Nichol, who's looking quite dapper today, but we don't stop there. We also have Mark Ogden and Don Hutchison joining us. And I'm so glad that we have them because let's talk about the big news today, guys. And that is that Bruno Fernandez of Manchester United has won the PFA Player of the Year Award. We love individual awards, don't we? But, Augie, I'm going to start with you because judging by last season and the fact that he pretty much swept all the awards then, this was definitely no surprise.

1:06So why wait for now to give him this one? Well, I suppose Don and Stevie will be able to tell you better than I can. But back in the day, the PFA award was usually done quite early. The players would vote around January, February time and sometimes get handed out by April. So the view was that they weren't really covering the full season. They weren't given the reflection of what a player has done over nine months. so they changed the system maybe three or four years ago so that the vote is held at the end of the season and then as soon as the players are back into this season they'll hand out the award because obviously they can't hand it out in middle of July or August because people are on holiday so season starts, they give out the trophy but it's for last season so it does feel a little bit out of the ordinary but it is to make sure that the player of the year is the player of the year, not the player of the half year so as I say, Don and Steve will remember when the voting phones went out in January or February Everybody picked the same player and you got a vote in April when the season was still six, seven weeks to go.

2:02Don, we know our Frank Labov hates individual awards, but you love individual awards. You're a positive guy, so 100 % deserved, right? Oh, easy, easy. I mean, it was back in the day when me and Steve were voting. It was conceived or perceived as a little bit of a joke. You used to vote for your teammates. You used to vote for your mates that you were pals with at other clubs. so now it's taken a lot more professionally and rightly so. And you think the best player by a million miles last season was Bruno Fernandes. He topped all the charts, he broke all the records with his assists. So fully deserved.

2:36Stevie? Yeah, even I can't argue with that. Yeah, I think... Here he is. Well, listen, if you carry a club the size of Manchester United on your back, then you deserve to get the awards that are available. And so, yeah, it was thoroughly deserved, 100%. No question. Some would say that maybe an Arsenal player should have won this award, considering Arsenal won the Premier League. But you, Stevie, actually won this similar award, the Football Writers Association Player of the Season Award, when you guys lost the league to Arsenal. Thanks for reminding me of that. At least you won the award, though.

3:12How did you manage to squeeze that in? Oh, I had to look through the history books, let me tell you. We did lose it in the last game of the season, and we had won the FA Cup. So you just didn't care when you got there? So, yeah, no, I actually, although this feels a little strange, I actually like what they're doing with this. Because as Don said, it was a little strange that, you know, at the end of January, you're filling in these forms. And so, incredibly, most of the time, the right people want it. Yeah. I'll be honest. somehow, because if you think about it, when you're doing this at the end of January, the fact that the right person won it is incredible.

3:52But it did actually usually end up the right. But I prefer this way better than the old system. It does seem a little strange right now. But listen, in a couple of years' time, when it seems like the norm, then 100 % the right decision will be made. And as I said before, Bruno Fernandes was the right decision for last season. For last season, indeed. but Manchester United definitely haven't started this season well. This is what Bruno Fernandes had to say after their loss to Hull City at the weekend. Same mistakes as we did last season. Every away game, we give too much of the ball to them. In the first 20 minutes, the goalkeeper was the one with the most touches.

4:30We needed to press more, be more aggressive. And then again, we need to work on set plays and not concede these type of goals. Against these type of teams, they are waiting for that moment. And Hull City definitely took their moment. So, Augie, how much panic is there in Manchester after what we saw at the weekend? How much panic? Wow, I mean, listen, it's still only mid-August, isn't it? But United have got a habit of making bad starts to the season. I've seen it a few times in recent years now where there's a bit of momentum. They've had a good season previously and they've signed a couple of plays and then, bang, you lose a game.

5:04They should win, never mind not lose. I don't think there's any panic, but there are areas of concern. The defence is still very, very kind of unpredictable. and we saw that situation with Harry Maguire who was wrestling his own team mate to stop a goal and that didn't work. Luke Shaw Luke Shaw's been there for 12 years now Luke Shaw's Man United career is as long as Roy Keane's and it's just ridiculous that Luke Shaw is still the left back after all of these poor performances poor seasons, injuries so United need to strengthen at the back but they've obviously focused on midfield, they've got three midfielders in but they do need a full back they probably need two full backs because I'm not sure the right back situation is resolved either but every season is an issue and I think is it good that it's happened now?

5:45Maybe but I'd be a little bit concerned the fact that they've had quite a clear summer actually to get everything right and the first game of the season the whole city manager says we know that Man United aren't great at set pieces so we targeted them and they made it easy but for me the craziest picture I've seen all weekend is Harry Maguire wrestling Brian and Bumo which it's just, I mean how do you wrestle your own player at a corner? Yeah that was definitely a sight to see. Don is it as Bruno has said new season but same old United problems. How many of the same problems are you seeing? Well, I'm seeing the same back forward Man United that I've seen for the last four or five years.

6:21There's been no change there. I don't know. I mean, listen, Bruno talks about giving the ball away. I mean, he's one of the biggest culprits of giving the ball away because he plays that way. He's risking reward. So you can't complain when your teammates are giving the ball away when you're doing the same. I thought they got beat up in wide areas. I didn't think they stopped enough crosses. I thought they were week when crosses were coming in, the whole play to Man United's weakness and they played it very well. Listen, it's one of them, Alexis, right? When you go away from home on match day one and a 12.30 kickoff, it's never going to be easy.

6:52The big test for Man United is the next game at home. If Ipswich at home, if they lost that one or dropped points in that one, then there'd be major concern. There'd be major panic stations. I don't think it's the end of the world. There's been a couple of teams like Liverpool, etc. that have dropped points. Matchday one, it's all about if you can get the result, it doesn't matter how you play. Unfortunately, by Man United, they got beat up on the day, so time for them to react. Yeah, still only the first game of this season. Stevie, you okay with Bruno Fernandes speaking out like this? I think so.

7:22I think so, yeah. I mean, it's kind of like, what do you expect if you're Manchester United? Last season, their best attribute was going forward with that four, pretty much, that we just saw. And the problems were in the middle of the park and defensively. And so when you bring in Telemans and Santos, I don't think you're particularly strength in the middle. And then you don't make any changes at the back. Then don't be surprised when you get the same outcome and the same performances. So it really shouldn't be that big a surprise because nothing has changed. The only thing that's changed is the two personnel changes in the middle of the park.

8:00But in my opinion, it's funny Augie was mentioning Roy Keane. Now, if you brought Roy Keane in to play in there, then you would see a difference. But I don't think Tillemans and Santos make any difference to what was there before them. And so don't be surprised when nothing changes. I still have them finishing in the top three, though. All right, let's move on to remind you exactly who finished in the team of the year at the PFA Awards. This is the list unfamiliar. I suppose suspects there with Erling Haaland making the cut, of course, Bruno Fernandes. But Stevie, you had one big problem with this 11, didn't you?

8:35Shirky. Why? Well, number one, I'm not sure he was a boss. You know, when you sit in the dressing room and you're waiting for the team sheet to come up, there's probably, in the best teams, there's probably nine or ten of the 11 know who's playing, if everybody's fit. You couldn't say that about Shirky throughout the season. and please somebody tell me if I'm wrong but in my head I think there was a spell of three or four games when he started in a row where it seemed like Pep was willing to give him his head but then he went back on the bench again and came on now he played he played in 33 games but I tell you what I'd love to see how many he actually started and then you look at Morgan Rogers I mean you talk about influence influence on a side he's got more goals maybe doesn't have as many assists, but I mean, the game's about goals.

9:29So yeah, I 100 % would have swapped Morgan Rodgers for Ryan Cherky. Don, do you agree with Stevie? Yeah, I think so. I think when you look at pure output, and that's not Cherky's best position off the left-hand side, he's a number 10. But if you're looking for output throughout the season, I thought Morgan Rodgers played really well. That's why he's got his 100 million plus move to Chelsea. I thought he was outstanding. and so the Cherokee one seems a bit left field. Mark? No, I agree and I think that shows you that the vote was cast at the end of the season. Cherokee had a decent end to the season so it's fresh in people's memories but he's not a player that had a consistent season.

10:09I think for a while Pep didn't trust him. Pep was kind of wary of putting him into the team because he doesn't do the defensive work so yeah, he ended the season well but I think you mentioned Morgan Rodgers, Anthony Gordon as well, he got a big move to Barcelona so there's definitely players ahead of Cherokee that I would have put him but it's just the way the season ended and players voted for him in the back of maybe a good April. All right, well, Stevie, don't worry, it's not a real 11. Not really. Exactly. A bit late for him, isn't it? Stevie's not recovered, Alexis, on that night you put in the side of him.

10:40Well, we'll have a look at some of the award winners, the other award winners on that night as well at the PFA Awards. There you can see the Women's Player of the Year goes to my girl, my fellow Jamaican, Bunny Shaw, who we had a little chat with, Stevie. We did, yeah. You couldn't understand her. I'm not, well, that's Richard coming for me, isn't it? No, I was going to say, I don't think she understood the Jamaican Scottish accent was very interesting indeed.

12:37All right, well let's have a look at what has been a pretty busy summer transfer window, especially for Tottenham Hotspur, we can officially announce that Savio, yes, he has changed his name from Savio to Savio, and he has officially joined Spurs. Here's what De Zerbe had to say about him. We need players capable to win one-to-one, to create something, to create a chance to score. He's not a score goal, but in terms of one-to-one, he's one of the best players, especially because he's 2004. He can play on the right side, on the left side. I know him from a long time in Brighton. I spoke with him when he went before to enter in City.

13:34He is a big player for us, a big senior. I think that the players are so good in one-to-one, so good in to create a chance to score, to be complete and he has to score. If you analyze the other best winger in the world, many of them they score 10-15 goals per season and he has the qualities, maybe his habits, he has to change habits because he has to be focused on the assistance, on the one-to-one dribbling and also to score. Because we have to increase the numbers of the chance to score and the number of goals. You become top team scoring more goals. All right, so does Erby there saying, Stevie, that he's one of the best in the world in 1v1 situations, creative, versatile, but you don't agree, do you?

14:43At his best, he can be, and he has. I don't see the goal output coming, I'll be honest. But in terms of creativity, there's no question that when he's at his best, fullbacks don't want anything to do with him. The problem he has is that he's not consistent. And, you know, we've just been talking about Pep not trusting Cherky. Well, another player he didn't trust was Savio. Yeah. Because I don't think any of us could sit here and say, well, he's not capable one-on-one of tearing a defender apart. He's not capable of creating chances. He's capable of doing all of these things. The problem is he has to do it on a consistent basis.

15:27And he hasn't done it. And yes, in terms of his age, what, 22? there is absolutely room for improvement for maturity and for that consistency consistency to come but in order for all that to happen he has to play a regular amount of games back to back in order to get into that mode and if you're the coach and if you're deserving he's not doing it after four or five games you're under pressure to set him down again and then you're back to square one. So for me, this is a gamble. The potential's there. He has all the things that you want, but he has to show them more often. Now in these early games for Spurs, what right off the bat do you want to see from him?

16:11Give the fans and your teammates something as early as you can to make them believe in you and want them to give you the ball every single time they get an opportunity. That's what he needs. That's all. Don, Just the other day on the show, especially after what we saw from Spurs in their opening loss, Stevie and Craig kind of questioned the grit and the toughness of Spurs. But does Savio bring some of that in? I'm going to say no. No. No, I think to Stevie's point, and there's Erby there talking about his habits and he needs to mature. I think that's fine. I think he needs to get away. He probably needs to fall in love with the game again and remember what he was good at when he was younger.

16:52and under the pep system, we saw it with Grealish where wingers get the ball. Can you keep hold of the ball? Not necessarily take everyone on all of the time. Can you recycle it? Can you suck players over? Can you play the ball back into midfield and find the spare man? I think you're Savinho there. You've got to forget all that. And Guardiola's a genius. Don't get me wrong. But wingers need to remember what they're good at and what their job is. And their job is to scare full-backs. Savinho needs to get the ball. Savio needs to get the ball. whoever he's playing against whoever he's playing on the left-hand side and he's playing against the right back is go and take him on and take him on again and take him on again and if you're on the other side go and take the left back on on, on, on get crosses in the box excite the Tottenham fans and they'll sharp get behind you but he needs to remember when he fell in love with the game what he was good at and that is taking players on getting the output by assists, crosses and goals Augie, we've seen some pretty wild feasts so far in the Premier League this transfer window but 85 million overall now for Savio.

17:52That's a lot of money. I mean, this is an example of how the market is just totally overheated this summer, isn't it? Because he signed for City two years ago, albeit from their sister club, Gerona, for 20 million pounds, 21 million pounds. There's no way he's four times the player that he was two years ago. Those stats you showed earlier on, the goal's output is really, really poor. The assist in his first season, I think 11 assists. Well, look, he's playing with Erling Haaland, so half a pass will become a goal with Erling Haaland. So for me, Spurs are paying way over the odds. Now, there is a suggestion that Spurs are going to get all my marmouche before the window closes from City.

18:26And because Man City got a salon closed down to Frankfurt, which means they have to give 15 % of any profit, they basically raised Savino's fee and reduced marmouche's fee so they're not paying a salon fee. So there's an element to explain why this fee is so high, but still, it's a really high fee. It doesn't make sense. It feels like a Tottenham player, you know, a kind of a winger that might do something, might not do something. It's crazy money. It really is. And I think we've seen a lot of that this summer. I mean, look at Reinders going to Saudi Arabia for over£50 million. We've had some fees that look just off the scale.

18:57And this is, for me, the most obvious example of that. Well, Argi, you mentioned Spurs, of course, linked with Omar Marmoush as well. They have been linked with Liverpool's Cody Gatpo. What else can we expect Spurs to be up to in what's left of the transfer window? Yeah, I think Marmoush is the one that's more likely to happen. I think that deal is pretty close to fruition. I'm not sure he's the answer I think Spurs need a striker I'm not sure Mamouche is a striker that they actually need he's a foal but I'm not sure he's a goal scorer Gakpo is a strange situation right now Liverpool need to bring people in but I don't think they need to lose Cody Gakpo I think he's one of the players that they can rely upon he's a 7 out of 10 most weeks so again there's one of these strange stories with certain players that clubs are interested but clubs haven't made contact so agents and representatives are making quite a lot of noise I'd be surprised if Gakpo leaves Liverpool especially for Man City and especially for Tottenham because how many wide players or forwards do they need?

19:49They've already got people like Kudos there from last season. They're bringing in Savio, they're going to bring in Mahmouche. I think Spurs have got plenty of forwards to be going on with. So Gatpo is one that I'd be surprised if they left Liverpool just because of the situation they're in with issues to address elsewhere. Right, well, let's pivot now and talk a bit more about Manchester United and specifically about a certain player that they have brought in because they have officially signed Carlos Baleva. This is what United had to say about it. Brace yourselves. At the age of 22, Baleba has already established himself as one of the most talented midfielders in the Premier League.

20:21During the 2024-25 season, his combined number of tackles and interceptions was the sixth highest among midfielders in the league, while he also ranked fourth highest for progressive ball carries per 90 minutes. Last season, Baleba played 31 games in the Premier League, ranking in the top 8 % of players for combined tackles and interceptions, as well as the top 1 % for second balls won, helping Brighton and Hove Albion to qualify for the UEFA Conference League. My days, what a wordy statement that is, and Augiem told you wrote it for United. Oh yeah, I said it, Paul, looking at my stats, I mean, the top 1 % of second balls won, and they get in the Conference League.

21:08You know, let's get the balloons and the party poppers out. Get the qualifier for the Conference League. I mean, look, does he win his tackles? Does he make a pass? Can he score some goals? I mean, that's what we need to know. Some of these nonsense stats are probably not helping belaborate. It almost sounds like United have justified his signing and said, look, he's a really good player. Really, look at his stats. He's a good player. He's got an injury at the minute and they need somebody with a bit of power in midfield. But that's just nonsense, isn't it? I'm sure Stevie's all over that. I'm sure Stevie agrees with every word that they said in that statement.

21:34Nothing Stevie loves more than just specific stats like that, right, Stevie? If ever something told you to try to convince you to sign a player, it's that. I don't remember when Van Nussle Roy signed or Jap Stam or anything like that. I don't remember fairly throwing out any stats. Just what he did on the field was enough for your eyes. It's like, don't worry, guys, calm down. We've got someone good, look. Yeah. Top 1 % of second balls. That's a little bit embarrassing. The truth of the matter is, there's a chance that this kid could be fantastic, but there's an equal chance that he will be not quite as good as you think he's going to be.

22:12He had a fantastic, two seasons ago, season before last, it was, oh my goodness, who is this? It actually reminds me of the forward they had. Is it Craig Ferguson? No, not Craig Ferguson. Evan. Evan Ferguson, the Irish boy. so for six months you're like oh my goodness where have they got this guy from and then he dropped off the edge of the earth pretty much I couldn't even tell you where he is now and so for me Belieber not quite not quite fell off the earth last season but kind of disappeared I know he had a couple of injuries but as you said I was shocked when I read he played 31 games yeah I never noticed him playing much at all so yeah again Again, a bit like the Savio thing.

22:59It looks like all the tools are there, but are we going to see them on a regular basis? And again, as Augie's already said, the transfer fees are a little kilter. And 65 million for a guy who just was okay last season kind of seems a lot. Augie, where does he fit in to this current Manchester United team considering the signings that they have already made this summer? Yeah, and you've also got Kobe Mayne to play because Kobe Mayne has not kicked the ball yet. So they've got four midfielders. I mean, Tielemans is different. Tielemans is a player with plenty of experience and he plays a bit further forward.

23:41I think Tielemans will be the one that they can rely upon. But they need bodies because they're in the Champions League this season. They only played 40 games last season, one game in each cup. So they've never played so few games in the Premier League. So they need a squad. And I guess Michael Carrick is going to have to rotate around. but I'm not quite sure when he gets his first choice midfield what it will be. Is it going to be Kobi Meynu and Baliba? Is it going to be Baliba and Tielemans? Who would you start, Augie? I don't think it would be Andre Santos, but who knows? Well, when Baliba gets fit, which could be two or three weeks away, he's on his ankle ligaments, I would be tempted to go with Baliba and Kobi Meynu behind Tielemans, but then where do you fit in Bruno Fernandes?

24:19None of them are absolutely standout midfielders, the whole midfielders, that's the problem. none of them you think they're the guy they're all a bit wait and see aren't they so Augie what grade would you give uh this signing then Professor Ogden Belieber I would give him I'd give him a C plus because I think he's like Stevie said he's got a lot of potential to to come good but he had a dip last season did he have to dip because Man United were linked with him and it got into his head and if that's the case then what's he going to be like playing for Man United and wearing the shirt and having the pressure that comes with it so So if he was affected by the speculation, it's not a good sign that he might actually deal with the actual reality of playing for Man United.

25:00But on the face of it, he's a good player. He's got a lot of power. He can move the ball around quite well. He does give United that athleticism and that strength they've not had for quite a long time. So C plus, and it could be a B plus if he does well next season. Don, the boys don't seem entirely too convinced with this signing. How do you take it? No, I'm having him. I was lucky enough to watch lots of Brighton games. at Brighton and away from home. So I've seen him at pitch level. And he was a£100 million midfield player two seasons ago. I think his head was turned by Man United. He suffered one or two injuries.

25:35And the biggest takeaway, which might sound really strange, but my biggest takeaway from watching Carlos Belieber at pitch side is sometimes the game's a little bit too easy for him. So he then tries to do the hard things, which is not his game. He'll try your flick. He'll try your trick. That's not his game. He's a player that can play number six, patrol the midfield, protect the centre-backs, win the ball back. He's got good energy, good legs, and then feed it to better players. That's where he excels. I was watching a player last year that was just suffering from a little bit of confidence.

26:05So to get him for 65, as the boys have said, 100 million the season before, I think somewhere in the middle of that might be his true price range. But in terms of the ability that he's got and the potential that he's got, I think for Man United this could be a terrific signing. Oh, how many times did Don say that? He's had the privilege of watching him pitch side and at pitch level last season. Must be nice. I think it was Don that wrote that statement for Manchester United. Before you get to carry, remember what he said. Could. Yeah. Just cooling your jets. Cooling your jets. Cooling your jets.

26:38All right, well, let's talk about Nico Gonzalez. The perfect person to stick with is Don for this one. Don, because Newcastle now signing the Manchester City man for 52 million. Ian. So how are you grading this one? Oh, I'm grading this like an 8 out of 10. I don't know about the grades. I'm not sure on the grades. That's not my forte. But I think buying a holding midfield player for Newcastle in the window that divide after, you know, two months ago, it was pretty doom and gloom. Felt as though we were losing all our best players left, right, and centre. And all of a sudden, the club have gone out and spent or brought three or four players in, if Nico signs, for the one in Bruno Gimaraes or the one in Tenali for 100 million.

27:19So I'm grading Newcastle's window, considering who's left, exceptional for the fees that's been spent. So, you know, what you wouldn't want to see is the departures on the right-hand side and then no players coming in on the left-hand side. So they're going younger, they're going faster. They've got really young players to find experience like Nico to play that number six, to let the young kids go and fly and go and play. I think for Newcastle United this could be a brilliant sign and exactly what they need Brilliant I feel very negative today I know, I saw you shaking your head over there when Don was explaining I was so positive and smiling and all kinds Listen, when Manchester City was struggling where was Nico Gonzalez?

28:01Hard to get instead of one He was generally sat on his backside on the bench I mean If you're going to be the number six apparently I can't believe I just said that at number six. If you're going to be a defensive midfielder, then are you really going to rely on Nico Gonzalez stopping teams getting out of your back line? I'm sorry. You know, he's at his best when he's got the ball at his feet and he gets on it and he knits things together and he starts things off. The one thing that I don't remember Nico Gonzalez ever doing is breaking things up. And if that's why you're signing him and I don't remember him doing that, then it's difficult for me to get carried away.

28:46He's great with the ball, the feet, neat and tidy, the whole thing. Depends what you want though, isn't it? Depends what you want. I mean, the classic example of a number six is Busquets. But he was never a destroyer. You know, it depends what you want. I think he was very unlucky when he signed that he was going to be back up to Rodri and you're never going to get inside a Rodri position. But Rodri was out. See, the difference with Busquets though, Don, is Busquets had the most incredible football brain So his reading of the game was just sensational. You can't class Nico Gonzalez in that. No, no, no.

29:19So that's kind of where I'm coming up. All right, will we agree on that? All right, well, I want to know, Augie, now, because it seems like Manchester City are stockpiling some cash now, Augie. Do you feel like maybe they're ready or trying to get ready to place in a late bid for a certain Enzo Fernandes? well you said the stockpiling cast they spent a fair bit they've already spent 200 million pound on Bawadi and Elliot Anderson so they've spent all right to be fair and look I think they will try and get Enzo Fernandes but I'm not sure that Chelsea need to sell him I think obviously the reaction that Enzo received at Fulham on Monday night was very negative from the away fans which he's going to get this season but I think the Chelsea fans almost like got him back on the side so the Chelsea fans aren't as hostile as they were a couple of weeks ago so I think it would be self-defeating by Chelsea to let him go especially to a rival like Man City I think Chelsea will fight hard to keep him but obviously Chelsea ultimately will decide on the basis of money and if they can make a profit on Enzo Fernandes they might let him go but I think obviously with Enzo and Caesada when they're both together Chelsea have got a very strong midfield and Chelsea could push hard for the title this season so why are you going to weaken yourself by letting him go to Man City so I think that's probably less likely to happen than likely at this stage Don you wanted to get in on this one?

30:38Well yeah I think Enzo Fernandes Alexis' best position as a number 10. And then that displaces Phil Foden or Ryan Cherky. It's not like they need, in my opinion, a number 10. I mean, I've been saying it for a long time when they need a number nine. You know, Julian Alvarez left the club for$95 million to let it go Madrid. And then it was like Marmouche's backup. If they ever got an injury to Haaland, who's going to play number nine for Man City? So I think that's the position they should be looking at, another goal scorer. All right, well, speaking of Chelsea, Liam De Lappe has left Chelsea and he's joining Nottingham Forest now for around£50 million.

31:16Stevie, you like this one. Well, I like it because I think he's perfect for Forest and the way they play. You know, I don't think he's good enough to play in any of the top sides around Europe. But I think he absolutely will fit in at Forest, you know. You know, people like Ongi that have just left and Chris Wood, You know, they've all had good careers at Forest because of the way Forest plays. And this, to me, suits him. You know, he'll have more time and space because it'll be more counter-attack. He'll be able to use his strength to hold off defenders and then he'll hold it up and then the guys with pace will get close to him.

31:55I think this will suit him down to the ground. He's not good enough for the way Chelsea or any of the top sides play because in small spaces and less time. All the cuter things about the game, it's not his game. The strength, the legs, running behind, holding people off, being big and strong. So I think this is a great move for him. And I think he's perfect for Nottingham Forest. Don, this more his level? Yeah, without being disrespectful, I think he looks like a younger, faster version than Chris would. I could see this working. I think he's got the attributes I think he's got ability I think he's just lost a little bit of confidence You take the big money move to Chelsea and it doesn't quite work and the fans are on you a little bit and all of a sudden you find yourself about fifth choice I think go and sign for Glasner at Forest You'll be more or less the guaranteed number nine This might be a fantastic move for him Okay, I want to talk about the prices for these players now because just hearing all the boys talking about it It doesn't seem like they're 100 % convinced about these players because they didn't exactly set the world on fire at their respective clubs last season or the season before.

33:06Yet we are seeing these wild prices for them. Is this just the way the Premier League is going now? Well, Nico, that's a profit for Man City. He made a profit on a guy that barely plays. Liam De Lappe, a£20 million profit for Chelsea. I don't understand it. I don't understand why clubs are spending so much money on players that haven't justified it. Obviously, De Laat was a... Chelsea bought him on a£30 million close fee last year, so they'll say, well, they got him on the cheap and they've grown his value, but he barely played last season. And he's had a different year on earth. He's worth£20 million more than he was a year ago.

33:43Oh, I believe we lost Augie. You know how that Wi-Fi works up north in Manchester. Oh, he's back, Augie. You can continue. Yeah, I don't understand how these fees have been justified because the money in the game is the money in the game. But why, if you're a buying club, would you spend way over the odds on a player? Now, I agree with the guys. De Lappes, I think, is a good signing for Forrest. He made the wrong move last year.

34:09All right, well, we kept trying there on that one. All kinds of going on in Manchester, guaranteed. A lot's going on in Manchester, indeed. Well, Don, let's talk to you quickly then about the Liverpool-Newcastle game. Of course, that was a big game, a big emotional game too as well. ended in a nice 2-2 draw. I guess we could see who it is. But you had Florian Wirtz as your player of the year in our early Premier League predictions. And Stevie, absolutely shocked, once again, was not convinced by him and slated him. So what percentage do you regret picking him now as your player of the year come next season, next year?

34:45It's probably about 99.9. I'm watching Cole Palmer last night. I should have went for Cole Palmer. I think I was just hoping I was thinking I watched him pre-season a player that needs to improve I don't think I don't know I don't want to write him off because the talent is there but I just get the feeling that Liverpool's number 10 or best number 10 for what they want is Dominic Saboslai so the knock-on effect and especially I took a call from a good friend of mine about two years ago 18 months ago, Jason McIntyre and he told me that Liverpool have signed Caicedo or were signing Caicedo late on whatever night it was, Friday night at 12 o 'clock.

35:25And I was like, brilliant, going to be the best signing Liverpool I've made for ages. If Caicedo was playing for Liverpool, then you'd see a better Florian Vurts. Unfortunately, he hasn't signed for Liverpool. They've got the same midfield players. And Dominic Saboslay, in my opinion, for what Liverpool need, is their best number 10 because he's athletic. He runs in the box. He runs beyond strikers. He gets goals. He's not a number eight where he's a flicky, tricky, sort of, you know, try and trick in midfield Sir Bozlai. He's not one of these guys that can just manufacture a little five-yard flick.

35:56He's a guy that's got good energy. He can run in the box. So I'm watching Florian Versa. I'm just thinking, where is he going to play? Because then you could shoehorn him in on the left-hand side, but then he's not really a winger. I've seen some clips today of a proper number 10 that Liverpool had about five years ago, and that was Philippe Coutinho. And you watch Philippe Coutinho's clips at Liverpool. I mean, he looks like a 500 million pound player compared to Florian Vert so I hope he does it I want him to do it because I know the brain's there I know the skills there but in terms of how much I regret it it's Cole Palmer all day long Stevie?

36:33Yeah I agree with Don to get the best out of him you have to have a settled situation around him no question you put him in a side that are dominating and have got quality and then he's the guy that will get that final pass to your 25 a season goal scorer. But in a team that hasn't quite figured out what they're all about, he's a passenger. He really is just a passenger right now. So I don't think we'll see the best of Florida Invers until Liverpool get settled. And that seems a long way off, unfortunately. Augie, you're close enough to Merseyside and we do have you back. What's some of the chat or the thoughts that you're hearing from Liverpool, Liverpool's faithful about Florian Virts?

37:27I think they're losing a bit of patience with him, to be honest. I think it's one of those situations where he's had a year and sometimes it doesn't work. And I think, you know, Jamie Carragher was talking about how it all works last night. And his view was that it's either Florian Virts or Dominic Schiavossla. and at the moment you'd pitch Shabaslai further forward because he's the guy that makes things happen, he can create, he can score goals, but if you're going to do that, you're going to have to address the defensive midfield situation at Liverpool. I just don't see where Verts fits in. They might have to admit that he's been a mistake.

37:56If he was at Man City or Chelsea right now, they'd probably sell him, but Liverpool can't afford to do that. But I don't see how he fits. He doesn't fit on the left-hand side because Iriola want pace and power. He doesn't seem to fit in the middle because he's too weak. It might just be a flop. It might just be one of these players that isn't going to cut it at Liverpool and he's much happier in the Bundesliga or Liga. If he was playing for Barcelona or Real Madrid, he'd be a superstar in Spain. But the Premier League, it just looks too fast for him. And I don't see that resolving itself no matter what Liverpool do.

38:26All right, a lot of doom and gloom today. I guess Don's just going to have to regret that pick indeed. Well, like he said, 99.9 % he regrets his pick. And he's already choosing Cole Palmer though, Steve. Are we jumping the gun there? A lot of, a bit of an overreaction. It's only, I mean, one game of the season. And, of course, Cole Palmer was looking like the Cole Palmer we all came to know and love. But should we kind of cool our jets there? Should Don cool his jets there? I don't think that's a bad choice. Really? For player of the year? I'll tell you what. He looked good. He looks smooth. He actually had a smile on his face.

38:56I haven't seen him smiling for a while. I wouldn't argue with that. Picked on Cole Palmer. Yeah. Yeah. No, I have no problem with that at all. I thought he was fantastic. All right. Well, it's a shame that we can't let Don go back on his prediction. He has to stick with Florian Veert just as Liverpool have to. All right. All right. 41:55That's a bit over the top, isn't it? were saying yeah yeah we got a lot of players over six two six three yeah yeah anyways we're back don hot just said and mark aga joining us for this one as well it up about celtic let's start off with the first question and it's for agi agi are you more pessimistic about i love when we're talking pessimism it has to be with agi agi are you more pessimistic about Spurs or United?

42:22Stop it. I'd say United because at least Spurs have had big investments you know they've signed some top people like Tenale have come in so I think and also Spurs have got a lower base Spurs finished 17th last season so anything's better than that I think United are going to find it hard though to get back in the Champions League after getting in it last season I think it's going to be tough unless they make some another couple of big signings this week and they haven't really made a box office exciting signings. So, I'd say United. I think I'd be slightly more pessimistic about United. Don, do you agree?

42:53I know Stevie already does. Nah, I think I'd be more pessimistic about Spurs. I've got United tossing a coin with Liverpool at the top four or five. I wouldn't read too much into that one game away against Hull at 12.30. Listen, Spurs will let you down. Whenever you think Spurs are going to win a game, they will let you down. I don't see them getting top four or five. So I think United will. I think our producer Mike's going to have a bone or two to pick with you after this. Next question for Stevie and Don. Which of these Klopp-era midfield profiles does this current Liverpool side miss the most?

43:30Fabinho, Henderson or Wijnaldum? Easy. Stevie, go first.

43:40Right today. if I was to if I was given one of those players to put in the team today

43:52I would go I would go probably Fabinho at his best you had to dig for that one well because I liked Wijnaldum yeah Gini Wijnaldum I liked Wijnaldum but right now Liverpool need somebody in the middle of the park that's going to actually defend and stop the opposition getting to the back four. Ultimately, if you can do that, that's huge. If you could cut in half the amount of times teams get to Liverpool's back four, that would be a great start. So, because of the trouble they're in, I'm going to say Fabinho. Don, you said this was easy, so who's your pick? It's Fabinho all day long. It's staring you right in the face.

44:37I mean, prime Fabinho was an unbelievable midfield player. Not only did he score goals, he smashed everyone, he'd get yellow cards and break up all the counter-attacks that Liverpool faced. I think it's a very easy answer for Pignon. Augie, you want to jump in? Yeah, I can't disagree with that, but I'd say all of them right now because any of those players would make Liverpool better right now. 100%. 100%. Take all of them. Next question. Alexis, what do you think of United's transfer window? Will it be enough, given the added Champions League matches, for United to remain in the top. We don't want any fanboys, girls stuff.

45:15I'm not. Tell the truth. I am always, I'm going to tell you straight up, it is not enough. It is not enough. For what we expect and want at Manchester United, it is not enough. I don't think there's any signing that we have made that really set my world alight. I was excited about Uri Tillemans. I'm not going to lie there too. Happy to get back Marcus Rashford, always one of our own. But to say that we have gotten one, especially even when you compare it to what Spurs have done that I could say, yes, this is, this is already, I know this is going to be a success on the pitch. In terms of to compete for Champions League or compete for at least top three again, I don't know.

45:52I'm pessimistic. I thought Augie was pessimistic, but call me Miss Pessimism. But then now I'm hoping that will work against, that will work in my fame. Yeah. Miss Pessimism. You've had a couple of great windows, Alexis. You signed like Sesco and Cuña. had a couple of really good windows. Can't fix it all in a couple of windows. Don, I can't tell if you're saying that tongue-in-cheek or not. I don't know about Cesc. You can't sign a full team in two windows. So you think, you know, potentially fix the front line. They're fixing the midfield in this window. Defenders next. Are you doing all right?

46:30Augie, I know you'll agree with me. This doesn't feel like enough, surely. Augie, where did you play Kenya? Two questions there. Cesco you're not starting Cesco listen I was going to say that I think what Man United need right now they've needed for a long time is a proper goal scorer and Cesco's not that but he's better than Hoyland was but Zerks is useless so I think they need a goal scorer and if you're looking at Cunha he's probably the best of a Cunha's a good player but he's not he hasn't got the pace to play through the middle but United haven't got a striker right now so that's

47:10Well, there you go. That sums up. They're probably thinking, Alexis, to Oggy's point there, they're probably thinking, right, where can we get Van Nistelrooy? Oh, my days. Yeah, but these guys now, these Van Nistelroys, these, you know, Kylian Mbappes and these Harry Canes, they're 150 million quid. Yep. Man, you haven't got that money. Alas, no. We just want big man up front, 20-plus goals a season. Oh, what a time that would be. Yeah, join the queue. Yeah, that's true. Join the queue indeed, a lot of us. Next question is an obligatory percentage question for Don. I like these. Percentage chance for Chelsea to finish in the top four this season, Don.

47:52Ooh, good. Well, my predictions the other day, Alexis, I had them in second. I've got Chelsea finishing with second with Gael Pedro, Cole Palmer, Morgan Rodgers, Esteval Enzo Vistase, Caicedo, Lavia I think top four I'm going to go 75 % 75 % Stevie you like that because everyone seems to be really impressed by Chelsea I think the top four They've got good players and they don't have any European football I mean they can basically be once a week How much of it is down to what Xavi can do there? Or what we've already seen from him?

48:34Yeah, a combination of Xavi, Europe, you know, making some really good signings. You know, Morgan Rodgers is going to score goals. And if you can get Cole Palmer back to normal, then you're going to score goals. So if he can put his back three together and work with them and get them in tune with each other, obviously got to change the goalkeeper. Then, yeah, I see him in the top four, yeah, comfortably. All right, exciting times if you're a blue indeed. Next question is actually supposed to have been for Augie. And we do have Augie back. He's fixing his Wi-Fi over there in the middle of the woods.

49:14Augie, the Manchester derby is 20 days away. How much of a season decider is this going to be for both Manchester clubs?

49:26Oh, it's too early to be a decider. It'll give you an insight into what they can both do, but it's not a decider. It will tell you how much more progress United have got to make to close the gap on City, with there's still a gap there. And it'll also say how much the end of Moresca is going at City, but it's too early to be decided. There's a lot of f***ing player. Down too early, right? No, I think it's a decider for Man City. Oh. If Man City lost it, I mean I covered the game against Bournemouth the other day, they were extremely lucky to win that game. It looked like they were getting beat all day long, taking a point maximum, had they won it.

50:04I thought they got very lucky, so if they went into that game and lost it, you start to think, well, are they going to be top four? So, I think it's bigger for City than United. More pressure on City to win the first derby? Steve, why not lose this to Abbey? He's not going to tell you anything about where they got any finish.

50:27Alright. Stevie's not having it. No. No. Alright, next question for Don. Brilliant commentary on the Milan-Torino game. Did you pay someone to say this, Don? Who was on it? I guess Don was. Really? 100%. Oh, of course. Alright. He's obviously paid someone to say this. But what do you think of Amarim's style of play with Milan compared to when he was at United? I mean, it's one game. They played really well second half more than they did first half. The good thing is he's got a number nine in Gonzalo Ramos, which they haven't had for a while because last season, Allegri played, Krishan Pulisic and Rafa Liao was two false nines, and that never worked.

51:09I mean, it was embarrassing towards the end of the season. They started the season actually quite well, were tailed off big time. He's saying if you walk with things over there already, he's already got asked a question today about Rafa Liao and he went, Liao, not important. So whether that's sort of broken English, broken Italian, we'll have to wait and see. One of their best centre-backs they've had for the last three or four years is Pakaio Tamori. He's put him in the Bomber squad already. So he's making some brave calls. Now he benched against Torino. Salamakas came off the bench, good player.

51:41Rabiot came off the bench. Modric came off the bench. He has got some squad to try and compete, but you know, very early on. Alright, next question is a transfer question, so we're going to go to Augie for this one. Augie, the date is September 2nd. Where are Julian Alvarez and Enzo Fernandez playing?

52:10By the way, here's the thing about that. Here's the thing about what just happened. We weren't sure whether Augie had frozen or not. What does that tell you? We weren't sure at all. What does that tell you about Augie? That he's just very stiff. He is touching the words. Is he frozen or not? We don't know. Augie, we're going to let you go. We're going to let you go. Start your Wi-Fi out. Because he doesn't seem too distraught. Don, what about you? What do you think?

52:46Oh, he's doing that on purpose. He's doing that on purpose. Of course he is. I was like, we can't have lost Don too. I know, you can't lose me. Listen, I think I might be in the minority here, but I think if you're Atletico Madrid now, I think you've got to put your big boy pants on and accept that Uli Alvarez wants to leave the football club. Now, the days of 20 years ago, when you can say you're going to rot in the reserves and that's just not going to happen. So why don't you just say to Barcelona, right, this is the fee we want for him. The player obviously wants to go. Why don't we generate as much money as we can and let him go?

53:25Because no one wins by Julian Alvarez storming down the tunnel after the game, not playing, coming off the bench, being a bit moody. You're not going to get the same player. If you do put him in the reserves or you do bring him off the bench, he ain't going to be worth$150 million. and that will just that fee will get devalued every month when he loses confidence and doesn't play just sell him and if you've got a strength in Barca then so be it or sell him to Arsenal just go and get top money for him Can't sell him Can't sell him You can't sell him to Barcelona He's not good on the bench You can send them to any if it's anybody outside La Liga yeah absolutely but it's not going to be it looks like it's Barcelona or nobody else and you can't serve into Barcelona so you're going to have to face it and I think Chelsea need to do the same with Enzo just because they're booing you start winning games or you start scoring goals then it'll go the other way then the majority of fans will be with you there'll always be a little section that are never going to be happy but you fight your way through it.

54:39And maybe with Alvarez you say, you know what, here's the deal. You score goals for us this year and we'll think about it. Just find some way. But you've got to go through it. Stevie, what if he says no and has a sulk up and sitting on the bench every week? Well, then that's... If I'm a supporter of Atletico Madrid I would rather do that, I'd rather see that than us getting 90 million. Because, by the way, this team has spent nearly a billion in the last how many years? And guess what? They got deadly so far to show for it. So money's not the answer. You either make them rot or you try and figure it out.

55:26Try and figure a way out of it that he gets playing. And then in six months, if things go well, then it's in the past. You don't sell them to Barcelona, no chance. Quite the difficult task now for Trojo Simeone. We'll see exactly how that pans out. Next question, Stevie, I had this superstition that your diet somehow aligned perfectly with Liverpool playing nice and frightening football in Europe. Any chance you can go back to that diet routine so we could get the prime Liverpool we used to watch a few years back? What did you change in your diet? Well it wasn't the diet that changed, it was the activity that changed.

56:07The stress. The stress. Listen, when you're out, when you're playing and you can eat what you want, you burn it off. You're training every day, you're sweating it off, you're burning the calories, the whole thing. It's not a problem. Not a problem. It's when you stop. It's when you stop. It's the activity, not the diet. Exactly. Because I know your diet never changed. I mean, if ever there was an example of how diet is over, just over... No. Because you were eating the same then as you are now, relatively. Oh, sorry, have I taken this the wrong way? How have you taken it? Well, I thought we were talking about when I was playing.

56:51Yeah, when you were playing. Yeah. And you were eating the same then as you kind of do now. Yeah. Exactly. So it's not the diet, it's the activity It's the activity Exactly Aye Aye That's what I was saying Yeah Yeah No activity Then the pounds pile on Oh boy Final question Alexis, would you join Stevie for yoga classes To relieve stress from Manchester United? I would I didn't know you You go yoga classes? Do I look as though I go to yoga classes? I mean, I don't know You think for one second I go to yoga classes It may be good for like No Not necessarily like to drop pounds. Not saying you need to drop pounds, but I hear it's good for stress.

57:31Somebody wrote in during the week with a question about, have I tried yoga or something like that? That's where this has come from. Oh, word. But it's too late. Again, it's like... You could give it a whirl. It's like a diet. It's too late. No, it's never too late to do something healthy for your body. That is too late. But yoga is like, it's relaxing. It's very low impact. act. Listen, as I said last week, if you'd see me, if you see me in the morning and try to put my socks on, then you wouldn't be thinking about yoga. Should we try one yoga class? Just one. Let's just go to one. Usually they do first class free.

58:08If you try it, I'll try it. I've never done yoga in my life either. Seriously. Come on, let's do it. And I'll even buy you dinner after. You can buy me a pint. I'll buy you all the pints after. That looks as though I need dinner. I need another pint. I'll buy you dinner and pints. Should we try it? We're going to find it. I'm going to find a place that does yoga near us. Do it. Hey, Donna, have you ever tried yoga? Stevie, if Liverpool win the next two games on the bounce, you've got to do it. Oh. I have no problem with that. Deal? Shall we shake on it? Okay. All right. If Liverpool win. I've never been so confident of not doing something in my life.

58:43If Liverpool win the next two games or at least just two games in a row, Stevie and I will go to yoga. Right. Just not a morning class. I don't have to wear the tight pants and all that though. No, You could go in regular clothes, I'm assuming. Is it? Oh, yeah. Well, you have the next two games against Forrest and Ipswich. I mean, Forrest, they need to bounce back some way. I told you. I'm not 100 % sure they're going to win two games. Alright, well, we're going to do it either way. If Liverpool win at least two games in a row at any point this season, which they will, we're going to go to Joab Pass.

59:16No, no, no, the next two. The next two. The next two. The next two Premier League games. Alright, fine. the next two Premier League games, and then we'll revisit it. They win the two of them in a row, then I'll do it. We'll go yoga. All right. You heard it here. All right. Well, that's it for this edition of Extra Time. Make sure to tune in to ESPN FC.
