In short
World Cup Round of 16 preview and reaction, centered on Portugal vs Croatia, plus discussion of Spain’s win over Austria and upcoming Portugal-Spain, and later debate about a U.S. player’s red card and the U.S.-Belgium matchup.
Guests
Craig Burley (former player/commentator; discusses tactics and refereeing), Frank LeBoeuf (former France/Chelsea defender; frequent opinions on VAR and officiating), Kieran Gibbs (former Arsenal left-back; adds player/role analysis and personal match anecdotes).
Key claims
Portugal’s win hinged on Roberto Martinez’s bold substitutions, especially bringing on Gonzalo Ramos for the match-winning header; VAR correctly ruled Croatia’s late goal offside. Ronaldo’s benching was portrayed as the right tactical call, not the reason Portugal won. Spain are “in control” and have not conceded a goal yet, with Dani Olmo and Rodri/Pedri controlling the midfield. The Balogun red card was debated as inconsistent with other similar incidents.
Notable examples
Croatia’s offside goal after VAR; Ramos’ header; Ronaldo’s goal and offside finish; Spain’s 3-0 over Austria; Balogun challenge leading to red card; U.S. vs Belgium predictions with Balogun missing.

0:31New York was the hottest place in the States today. Fortunately, in our special air-conditioned studio, we're nice and cool here. So welcome in. Craig Ville's been doing sports on the roof all day. You can imagine he's enjoyed that. It's with us, Frank LaBeouf and Kieran Gibbs. Great day of World Cup action. We'll be reflecting on those two other games later on in the show, but we'll kick things off with a match that just Portugal against Croatia. Incredible game, an incredible ending. so many narratives going into this and then at the end once again giving us so many storylines if we just start overall Cray we can't start overall actually we got to start with the way that it ended yeah which was it just must have been devastating for the Croatian players who thought they'd forced extra time yeah and they all went running as you would and jumped on each other and thought that was they'd salvaged it and and VR had a look at the offside which which it was offside they had a little nick on the ball as the cross came in they have technology to to clean these things up now so it was the it was the correct call i've got to give both teams a lot of credit a couple of things i've got to give a lot of credit for uh a credit to roberto martinez but i'll get to him croatia i never thought for a second having watched them being totally outplayed by england particularly in the second half that they were going to give this multi-talented portugal side a run for their money like they did.
1:53They're an aging team at Croatia. They're not a big squad. And they hung in there and they hung in there and then during the second half you could argue they were the better team. Now, we're all sitting in that green room. Us, the Deportes boys, will he take Ronaldo off? And there was a unanimous consensus. No. We've been talking about it all year. Will he have the stomach to do it and he did it and I have to give Roberto Martinez a lot of credit he made big changes today and Ruben Neves came on for Ronaldo to show up the midfield but when he brought the four subs on including Gonzalo Ramos, that was a brilliant, brilliant header which was the match winner.
2:38I think you could argue that's been the game of the tournament thus far. I think certainly the ending Kieran, because you can't write that sort of script No, and this is what the World Cup's all about you've got players on the pitch that It can change games at any moment. And it's just such fine margins. Yeah. I really love that header as the winner. I think it was a great effort to get himself up there under pressure and managed to just get enough power on it. Incredible. Incredible scenes. And like Craig says, you know, to bring Ronaldo off, it was a big, tough decision and it's paid off. We were talking about Rafael Leal as well and how hot and cold he can be.
3:18and he's shown up and put a kind of a desperate ball in, but it's paid off and you've got to give Portugal credit for getting it done. I want to give credit to Croatia. I mean, this little country fighting like hell. And we saw that in 2018 with the World Cup final. And since then, I remember in 1998 getting into the semifinal, giving so much a hard time to Portugal today. And Portugal, I put them the third February for me, after France and Spain. And it was everything but easy for the Portuguese team. And with the guys, you know, that I think was the game of the tournament so far with the suspense that you have.
3:59And it's why we love sports. Because it's not written. And you cannot imagine an ending like that. I mean, I think I feel sympathy for the Croatian team right now in the dressing room. That must be awful. Because you think you got it. And then there was offside, so nothing to complain about. but there is a form of injustice in the faith of football and that's what happened today. The usual suspects will be out there, won't they, saying Vaz ruined the game because it ruined the big moment but it's about getting these decisions correct, isn't it? Because it is a World Cup. I think they got it right today, VAR.
4:32And Croatia had it on a couple of occasions. Yes. But they got it right. Look, if Portugal had gone out, the big story would have been, obviously, the manager and Ronaldo, probably his last tournament. That's not happening. They roll on to Spain, which is going to be fantastic. but on the older legs in the Croatia side two stalwarts were probably now departing certainly the international stage Ivan Perisic at 38 or whatever he is has been a brilliant pro but particularly Luka Modric at 40 you know just how gutted he was at the end his face when the camera panned to him when that goal was chopped off he's given so much and he's achieved so much in his career and to still go out there and do it was amazing again I just didn't think I thought we'd have been talking about a particularly comfortable 2-0 win today and if I'm being honest I think the Croatians put so much into that game and the further they had gone in this tournament I think it would have gotten more difficult I do think Portugal and Spain will be a much closer matchup I think if the Croatians had gone in there and if they'd won it they deserved to go fine but I think if they had gone into the Spain game off the back of their group and their knockout games and the way the Spanish would control the game, I think that would have been a tough one for them.
5:54What I think we'll see hopefully is a boxing match that is nobody's taking a backward step with Spain and Portugal and Portugal absolutely have the players to cause this Spanish side problems. We'll talk about that a little bit later on. I just want to focus on this game overall because Because the general consensus when you take a look at this Portuguese side, particularly the midfield, you could argue it's the best in this tournament. Yes. So why did we see it get overrun at times by this aging Croatia side? Hard to explain. You know, it's true that Neves and Vitinha are the best pair in the middle of the park in the world.
6:34And they show every game that they play for Paris Saint-Germain. And today they were dealing. But it's also what you do when you give the ball, you turn around. but sometimes you have to change the pace. You have to put the second gear and change something. And it's hard with Neto, Leao, even Bruno Fernandes and Ronaldo to change the pace, you know, when they play with Dembili and Bacola or Zvazkelia, they find the change of pace at the second gear. It's why it's so important to create the action, to prepare the action, but the finishing is not the same with Portugal. And that's where maybe they have a lack of cleverness, Yes, I would say, because not lack of qualities.
7:16It's impossible without the talent that they have. But they have, yeah, sometimes they have to make the run. They have to change positioning. And they don't really do that. They're more stuck in their position. And it's why maybe they don't finish the action. I'll tell you why. Because PSG, and we've talked about this, Luis Enrique has instilled a mentality into PSG that most managers talk about. Defending starts at the front. And Dembele has touched on it in his interview and said, if we don't run for PSG, we don't play. And that goes back to getting rid of the Messis, the Mbappes and the Neymar.
7:50And it's brought them success. They don't defend from the front of Portugal. Because Ronaldo, it's a token gesture. Rafael Leal, it's a token gesture. And Pedro Neto, I suppose you could put him in that bracket. So they don't press from the front. They don't get back in and help the midfield. So when they become under a bit of pressure in the second half, They're getting overloaded, but they're not really dragging those guys back in to help. And even when they come back in and help, it's kind of just a body there. It's not anybody closing the ball down. And so you start to get stretched because you have a couple of players.
8:24It only takes a couple of players in the front line not to come back in and pull the weight, and you're screwed in the middle of the park. And I know you want to talk to it a little bit later, but with Kukurela and Pedro Poro in the next game, they will have to do the job. Otherwise, they're going to be in danger. Let's talk about the big question. Did Portugal win this game because Cristiano Ronaldo was on the bench?
8:49No. No, I don't think so. I actually think that when he went off, Portugal felt like they lost that little bit of belief that something special can happen and they can get it over the line. That being said, we did see a good delivery from Rafael Leal and a moment of magic that separated the game. But I actually thought Ronaldo was effective today. You know, he got involved. He wasn't missing like we saw in the first game. He huffed and puffed today. He scored a great goal. Was this allowed? But what a control he did. It was a beautiful bring down and finish. So I think he was unfortunate to be brought off.
9:31And if he was in that position to make that header from that cross, I think we all say that he's capable of that as well what wait wait wait wait a minute Cristiano Ronaldo was man of the match huh Cristiano Ronaldo was FIFA's man of the match FIFA's Gianni's been on the phone has he wow well listen I'm not I'm not going to decry him because he wasn't bad but he certainly wasn't man of the match and you know anyway let's forget it's hard to name man of the match in that game well there you go well anyway he's got the great look Look, the finish that was offside was sublime. Yeah. But he was a bit of a passenger as the game went on.
10:10And as for taking him off, it was something I didn't think, and a lot of us didn't think, Roberto Martinez would do. So I give him a lot of credit for that. He's made a statement, so I'll take you off. And it was the right thing to do because he had all these front players on, including Gonzalo Ramos. Yeah, that sub was made earlier. It wasn't a like-for-like. No, it wasn't. He brought four attacking-ish players on all at once. So his one remaining sub, and it was the right thing to do, was take Ronaldo off for Ruben Neves, because they were light in the middle of the park. So they were trying to get back in the game, but they were trying as well to make sure they didn't lose it at the same time completely.
10:48And so that was the right thing to do. And do you know what? I hope Ronaldo is appreciative, and he seemed to be when he was running down the touchline, to celebrate with Gonzalo Ramos, that it's about keeping Portugal in the tournament. Yeah, exactly. It's not about taking him off, or him off, or him off. It's about doing whatever you need to do to keep your team in the tournament. If I keep them in the tournament by taking you off, you're going to play more. Because he's going to be back at the side, isn't he? Let's be honest about it. He will lead the line against Spain. So I think certainly in this moment, when they were celebrating, he realised that this decision from Roberto Martinez was the right one at the right thing.
11:23Do you think so? Do you think he thinks that? Well, he probably thinks he would have been heading in like Gonzalo Ramos. But at the end of the day, when a manager makes substitutions, and it comes off, and you're in the next round, and you've turned the game around, and you've won it, there is nowhere to go. No, the coach is right. And he can knock on the door and say, don't be doing that. What did I tell you? If we're losing to Spain, don't think you'll be doing that again. And Roberto Martinez has to be strong. This is not about one player. It's about a very, very talented Portuguese side who could go all the way.
12:00But they're only going to go all the way with big decisions, from the manager and making sure the players know that he's the guy in charge and he picks the team, he picks the tactics and when he makes a big call, it's for the right reasons. But I think also Portugal, you know, will take a lot of hope from this because it can't always be Ronaldo that the country relies on. Right, but do they take a lot of hope from this game or do they take worry from how they were up against it, against a Croatian side that I think a lot of people said they're not going to be super competitive in this tournament.
12:36So what side of the fence are we on here? Great that they came back or the fact they were outplayed for periods in this game? I think just how brilliant England are. I think that's what we take away. Well, we know that's not. That is the big takeaway. Look what we've done to Croatian. What do you think about that? What do you think about that? Well, I think that's absolutely not true. Cristiano Ronaldo scored his first goal on the knockout stages. It was from the penalty spot. Was it a penalty? That's a debate. Because I think... What do you think? I would have given a penalty because the guy reaches with his two arms.
13:07The two arms are not all the way around. Yeah, true. I mean, it's... If you go on a normal pace, I would say, of the game, it's really light. But it's true. When you go on slow motion, you see the grabbing. So, it got worse. The slow motion, though, is... No, it doesn't help. Slow motion with that balligan, which we'll get to later. Look, all we want to see, Frank, is consistency. Yeah, if next time it happens So you would say no pen? Well, I'd like to see more replays But to me Look, if we're saying Anything holding in the box is a penalty If a player, and Vega did throw himself down Is a penalty, I'm okay with that If every single decision Of a similar nature Is a penalty My problem is why a player, a defender Would try to grab Another player a forward player in that situation.
14:02But Frank, as a defender, you know full well that when you're in the heat at the moment and a player gets a run on you, it's a natural instinct for you to want to stop the player. Especially when you play for Arsenal and you do, you know, unset pieces. Frank used to drag players down every game. Frank LeBuff, by the way. Not me. I mean, I'll be honest. I wanted to rugby tackle him in the green room. When he was running about The game was on. He was running about shouting. I thought, I'm going to tackle this guy. If any of you are watching your games with your children, say a three-year-old, that's pretty much what Frank is during the games.
14:37Yeah, I'm still a kid. I love this game. So penalty for you or not? It's a penalty. In today's game, it's a penalty. The game has evolved a lot since Frank played. That was happening every week at Stamford Bridge. At Stamford Bridge, that was happening every week. And he was taking your nose off at the same time. The Croatians go out in one of the cruelest manners, given they thought they'd forced extra time. I wanted to ask you, going back in your careers, is there one that kind of sticks in your throat still, that you remember, that you kind of thought you were there or thought you were certainly going to push it further?
15:13Yeah, but again, it's why I like VAR. There is no contest about that. The fact that it was offside, so therefore, it's only normal and obvious that the refs did that. Have you experienced anything like that in your career? I won the World Cup, Dan. No, I won everything. I did not have this hard break. No, but Barb Vardy didn't exist. No, I understand that. There must be games without a refereeing decision. Are you talking international football? I'm just talking in general. Actually, I don't know, Frank. I got one that involves a colleague of ours who's coming out in a couple of weeks when Celtic played Liverpool in the UEFA Cup and we were beating Liverpool 2-1 and it had been a fraught, tense game in front of a packed Celtic park and McManaman picked the ball up in injury time and he ran 70 yards and scored what he says is the best goal of his career.
16:00And it kind of just flattens you that you've done so much work and that someday it's either a mistake or a bit of brilliance. And yeah, it does sort of deflate you a little bit. But then again, we're the second leg to go to Anfield and put it right. The creations don't. That's the problem they have. In a knockout game, there isn't tomorrow or next week. It's done and dusty. And for someone like Modric, there isn't another well-cut. It's over. What about you, Kieran? What have you experienced? I think if I could think of any game, it would be we played against AC Milan and we were 4-0 down in the first leg of the, I think it was the knockout stages of the Champions League.
16:36And then we took them back to the Emirates and we were 3-0 up with about 20 minutes to go. And I think it was Robin Van Persie got put through in the last minute and just tried to think the keeper. He was having an unbelievable season, but he just couldn't put it away. And I think that that was probably the most... Did you play in the second leg? Yeah. Right, I was just saying. Well, there's another one. It's why. Scotland were through against... Was that 96? The European Championship was in 96. I was playing in the game at Villa Park against Switzerland, and we were beating them 1-0, McCoy scored, and we were through.
17:16And we were getting this message, we were through, and then we were getting another message, we were out, and then another message, we were through. and then Patrick Kluivert scored for Holland at Wembley when England beat them 4-1 and that Kluivert goal late on, which is only a consolation for the Dutch, sent us out. So we were getting conflicting messages in the last 15 minutes to get back or get up the field and it was nothing to do with the game that we were actually playing. It was all coming from Wembley. You know, while we were talking, we were thinking about Paraguay and the 98 games where we had the golden goal, which is awful.
17:49Yeah, that's true. Laurent Blanc scored. Game over. And against Italy, the final, Trezeguet scored. Game over. And it didn't last. That golden goal rule. I don't know why. Because that's a killer. That's really a killer. Good for friends. Good for me. Thank you very much. Bye bye. But really, imagine, you concede a goal. And that's it. Game over. Yeah. Awful. Yeah, that's true. Yeah, you feel for Paraguay and you feel for Italy. You have no way you can go back into the game because that's the rule. crazy bring back golden goal i said no no karen yeah french would win the world's biggest soccer tournament has arrived and you can trade the entire tournament on call sheet on call sheet you can trade every match from the opening stage all the way to the final spain is currently trading at 17 to win it all meaning a 100 trade pays out over 550 If they win soccer's biggest prize on call, she you're trading against peers in a live market, meaning there's no house.

It's time to jump on the Lays bandwagon and nobody loses on the bandwagon.
19:28No upsets, no heartbreak, no stress, only good times. So join Lays on the bandwagon. Grab a bag of Lays. Get ready for the next match. Cheer for whoever you want. Lays keeps the party going. Ladies and official sponsor of the FIFA World Cup 2026. That Portugal will face Spain in the next round and we've been critical, quite rightly, of what we've seen with Spain so far in the World Cup. Well, you have. Oh, yeah. Mr. Sunshine and Flowers. Hand them out to everyone. Spain with a 3-0 victory over Austria. Very convincing stuff. This is what Luis de la Fuente had to say after that victory for Spain, which sets up that round of 16 tie against Portugal.
20:09The great teams step up when it's needed. We played a great match. We came close to perfection. Wow. De La Fuente has defended his side throughout this tournament, despite the criticism, particularly after that goalless draw against Cape Verde. It was bit men against boys today, wasn't it? Yeah, and it was interesting that... What's his name again? The Austrian coach. He used to be at Man United. Ragnar. Ragnar. Ragnar. It was interesting. He put two of his most experienced players on Luminium Mal. Conrad Leimer from Bayern Munich. How would you say Lima's game was in the first half? It's slightly frustrating.
20:42Particularly after the second nutmeg. And Sabitzer, two really great professionals. Sabitzer coming back to double up on La Mal. I think that tells you a whole story. And by the way, Lima is a right Tigris little player, isn't he? He's up for anything. And I think by the end of it, he was on the ropes. But Spain were just totally in control. And once again, Iazabal just showing this guy who flies under the radar. Absolutely. And does a great job. And actually in the first half, Schrager made a great save from him from a low drive inside the box. So he's really, after a quiet match day one, when Stuart Robson gave him a bit of his technique, he really has came to the fore as somebody who isn't a superstar, but is very good in this Spanish team at leading the line in terms of the positions he takes up, the balance of the team, particularly with Daniomo making runs.
21:32But not only that, he's not a prolific goal scorer, but he gets enough just to make sure he's doing a great job I think it's really unfair what I see because everybody's talking about Lamin Yamal and rightfully so because Lamin Yamal is just exceptional being only 18 it's true and he showed to Leimer and Sabitzer how talented he is but nobody talks about Oyal Zabal and that's insane and the thing is he's quite happy in that world maybe he likes it we were watching it with an Arsenal fan today he's going well Arsenal should sign him and he goes why does he want to go to Arsenal he's happy in Real Social in San Sebastien he's not very good
22:08He scored four goals and we have to give credit to Kukurea as well with two assists today for him. But that guy is always in the right spot. 17 goals in 17 games to Spain. Yeah, and he's always done the perfect move. You know, when he opened a second goal, you know, when he opened his foot on the right side of the net, it was simply the only thing to do and the best thing to do. But it's not easy. But he does it perfectly. But everybody talks about Lamin-Yamal, you know? And nobody says, well, the guy scored four goals. The guy is the star of the game, of the team right now. Really, is what I think.
22:46But he hasn't got maybe something special. What about the engine room, really? None of it's possible without the control that Rodri and Pedri have. Rodri's starting to look after this, you know, on-off season with the injuries and coming back, lacking a bit of sharpness. He's not looking himself at Man City at times. Just looks as if he's in total control of the game now. And Pedro beside him, obviously. But Daniel Almo also very well. But I do think he's played Mikel Moreno. The first game he played Fabian Ruiz in there. But I do think the Spanish look better balanced with Daniel Almo, who does a little bit of both.
23:22But those runs that he makes just takes defenders away. So, yeah, Spain growing into the tournament. Best performance of the day by a stretch. Although they did have a great one against Saudi Arabia. that you rubbished? No, I know. Calm down. I know. And they just got kicked in the Uruguay game. But Argentina lost against Saudi Arabia four years ago, the first game. So you cannot plan on anything. And it's 48 teams. And as I think, like Yamal said, the World Cup is starting now. Right. In the last 32. Because that's what it is. It's you go or you stay. And that's what it is. And it's the suspense.
23:58We talked about that. The pressure of the player will be going through. It's very symptomatic of the level of the game. Somebody asked earlier when I was doing those hits, you guys were doing... When you were on the roof? When I was on the roof working. I was keeping you guys the job, really, just doing all this stuff. And somebody said, while you were laughing around at the shop. You were doing ABC, you've got all Billy big time now. No, it's not part of my contract. I can't go on the roof with that. You didn't have to stand in a box on national linear TV, which is really embarrassing. Well, I didn't have to show everyone that.
24:35I showed it because I'm quite happy. I'm very comfortable in my own skin. I think people watching ABC would go, I think that guy's standing on a box. They didn't show the box, did they? They didn't zoom around. No, but I think people can tell because they know you're not talking. They can tell I was on a box. Somebody said, one of the questions on SportsCenter was, who's got the best pathway to the final or to win this in the World Cup? And I said, anybody that's not on the pathway of France. Yes. And that includes Spain. Yeah. And Frank was saying to me just before we come on air, where are we with Spain and France?
25:07And I said, at the moment, you know, you can have a bad day. Somebody could make a mistake. You could get injuries. Somebody might get sent off. You know, we saw the decision with Balogun. So these things can happen. But as we sit here now, if the French play well, continuously, they win the World Cup. somebody's going to have to come in and take this French team apart that's the big question there's a pathway at the moment if you're not in the pathway that meets France you're in a good place from the game go France showed that they were ready and they are ready to go and step up every game and because of their talent and the way they play together they're ready to win the final but that's not what a World Cup is you don't have to start well and very well to win a World Cup you have to finish well and Spain is showing that they are going...
25:58They're trending in the right direction. Oh, I don't know, Craig. I don't know what the bookies are doing. But the bookies are English, so of course they have to be English. English bookies, aren't they? Yeah, I'm sure they're English. I mean, look at that. That pretty much tells you that it just really comes down, as Craig said, to who can stop France. It's more interesting to know what type of team it actually is going to take to beat France. So in theory, it would be France and Spain in the semifinals. That's where we're at. And I think it's a nice segue now to look ahead to Portugal against Spain.
26:30We thought when you look at the bracket that this indeed could be the round of 16 clash, and that's exactly what's going to happen. The winner will meet Belgium or the US, obviously. It's fair to say Spain go into this as favourites. Slight, I think. Yeah. Slight, particularly with what we saw today that the Croatians were able to do to this Portuguese side. Now, I mean, I'm looking at the match-up. I'm looking at Vatinha and Neves against Rodri and Pedri. Right. Who's dropping off? Who's the player that drops off to pick up Dani Omo? How are they going to figure it out, Portugal, to get a grip of the middle of the park?
Read the full transcript
27:08Because PSG, with these players, dominate most of the games. But how are they going to dominate this Spanish midfield? Can they dominate the Spanish midfield? Yeah, but how are the Spanish midfield going to... Well, I mean, you mal against Nuno Mendes. Yeah. He got skinned a couple of times today. Yeah. Mendes done that left-hand side. His left-hand side. Kieran, there's nothing about this game that doesn't say it's going to be... It's got to be entertaining, isn't it? You can't imagine this just to be a standoff. No, no. This game is going to come down to, again, as Craig said, the battle of possession in the middle of the park.
27:38Neither team don't like to not have the ball, which you don't really see that too much these days. A lot of teams are comfortable to try to come with a low block, but I don't think that either team are suited for that. So both teams like to try to recover the ball quickly. I don't think that this game is going to be decided so much on the wide areas. I think it's going to come down to who dominates the middle of the park. I think the role of Bruno Fernandes in that game is going to be crucial for Portugal. He was taken off early in the second half. I think we were quite surprised by that today.
28:13We have to be fair, he didn't exist today. We didn't see the Bruno Fernandes we were expecting. And this game, like Dani Olmo for Spain, Bruno Fernandes will have a crucial role on that game. If he can find himself free between the two lines and serve the people at front, that can be a different game. Because Vittinian never is going to do the defensive part of it and they're going to bring balls to Bruno Fernandes. Now, what Bruno Fernandes is going to do with the balls, that's a different... Roberto Martinez selects players, horses for courses, I think. Rafael Leal and Pedro Neto play wide today because Croatia don't have a lot of pace in their team, particularly their defence.
28:57We saw Leal in the first half go past the right, I think it was Stanisic, who went past the full-back for fun with his pace. Neto went past Perisic for fun with his pace. So that was the horses for courses. What does Martinez do with Spain? If it's Poro and Kukurela, does he try and push them back? with those two players? Or is he worried about, as Frank alluded earlier, is he worried about those two attacking full-backs going that way so he puts a couple of more defensive wide players in to try and go with the runners? That's the kind of juxtaposition that Martinez is in. And this could be a big feather in his cap, a huge feather in his cap who say he hasn't got what it takes to make the big decisions if they can beat this Spanish side.
29:40Not necessarily they're going to go in and win the World Cup, because if they can knock out a team that's probably seeded above them and go to toe for them, it's going to be a big feather and Roberto Martinez is killed. A team that hasn't conceded a goal yet, by the way. That's the truth. Why are you looking at it? I was thinking of it. Spain haven't conceded a goal yet. Why are you saying they've been so bad? What do you mean? They drew nil-nil. Well, you've just said they haven't conceded a goal. What side of the fence are you on? My fence is, as one of the favourites, oh, I'd like you maybe to pass the ball forward and have a shot.
30:14You know what? That's a very simplistic look. Well, I'm a very simplistic man. I really think that, seriously, I think it's going to be a chase game. Which of the two coaches will decide to take care of the opponent? I think Spain will play their game. Yes. I think Portugal and Roberto Martinez will adapt to the Spanish team. Do you think he will start overthinking? That's a good point. You're right. Spain will do nothing different. Yeah. will Roberto Martinez be up at his tactics board for four straight nights? You know what he's like? He's got the little markers. He's... Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah.
30:53I'll put his... Nah, nah, nah, nah. That's like us before the show. Yeah, yeah, yeah. When would Greg Burnley? Put him on the roof. Put the Scotsman on the roof where it's 110 degrees. Yeah, I know. Was that bit all right? What bit? That bit. Yeah, I was... I did my hit like this. I'm going to get your back in my head. Okay, let's get some predictions.
31:21You won the goals and everything, or you just won the winner? Yes, I won the goals and everything. Both teams to score. Right. I'm going to go Spain win. I'm going to go Spain win from today's performance. That's where you gave me a score. They're gelling now. We're looking at a little score. Today's performance really reminded me of an old classic Spanish-style performance. Okay. it's going to be Spain we won the number what's the score? 2-1 in 90 minutes you won the minutes of the goal 21st and 25th thanks for toughen off thanks for toughen off Mr Leboeuf I go for 3-2 for Spain I always put Spain second favourite after France and Portugal third, so I have to follow.
32:12How will the goals be scored in what order? Oh, come on. Craig, he's going to win. What are you going for? Extra time. Oh, do you think so? Yeah. 2-2, extra time, spend to win 4-2 and extra time. Wow. Classic game. Wow, brilliant. Let's hope so. That's very accurate. Thank you very much, Craig. You're welcome. You can learn. And you didn't give asking for the minutes of the goals and everything? No, no. He gave a very accurate account. I gave him a very accurate and he didn't give extra time because I don't think you're going to go to extra time. Extra time is available over on our YouTube channel.

35:12You may have heard that despite the fact that the U.S. advanced, the big talking point was the fact that Balogun was given that red card and will miss the round of 16 clash against Belgium. I know, boys, you've talked about this on so many different mediums, but I want to talk to you about it here and now. Craig, what did you think of the red card decision? Extremely unfortunate for the player. I think it's the wrong decision. I think when you show the stills and the slow-mos, it does look worse, but then every challenge does. And there's no malice, there's no intent. I don't even think he's looking at the player.
35:47I think he's just trying to get his balance. and it's a consequence of that that he catches the ankle of the Bosnian defender and it looks worse than it is. For me, it isn't... I don't think it's a red card. I think the player is very unfortunate and I think what we have in this scenario is one rule for some and another... This is factual. One rule for some and another rule for others. The big stars, the Messis, the Ronaldo's, all these players, they get preferential treatment but a youngster making his way, having a great tournament, a very innocuous challenge, a red card for that? No, not having it.
36:25Frank, do you agree? Not really. I mean, the consequences... You think it's a red card? I don't have any issues with the red card in a way that the consequences could have been dramatic for the Bosnian player and he could have broken his ankle. Therefore, you have the right to think that... That's just a consequence. Yeah, I agree with you. That's where I have a hard time to stand for any of the sides where nothing happened. But imagine you are the player. You know you have nothing, but you pretend you have something. You know that if you get out, the player is going to get red carded. And you pretend to be injured.
37:04You are substituted to make sure that Balogun is red carded. That's what can happen if the referee doesn't say it's a red card. That's my problem. But yeah, overall, yes, he didn't do on purpose. Yeah, they tried to avoid him. Yes, the players were injured. So I can agree with what you said. And I have no issue. And I would have had no issues if the referee would have said it's only a yellow card. But for the sake of the game, to push the players to pay attention to where they go and how they go and the way they go, a red card is not for me something irrelevant. He's relevant. Well, I would say in the other way.
37:46It's not as extraordinary as some people think. Yes, exactly. Kieran, you get the deciding vote. Yeah, I think whatever way you paint it up, it's reckless. It's reckless and it's unfortunate because he doesn't mean it. It's not intentional, as the boys say. But you've got to know he's already leaning against him. He knows that his legs are somewhere there and he does try to control the ball, but his studs are up and he ends up going down the back of his leg. I think Craig's right. Messi goes down the back of a player's leg intentionally. Oh yeah, but he should have get on a red card. No, no, it's not different.
38:20It's not different. Messi goes down the back of an Algerian's leg and there's the picture. Match day one. Straight red. Not even a debate or it shouldn't be. Much more malicious. Much more malicious than anything Balogun did and he didn't even get a yellow card. That's the problem. But you're saying he should have known the player was there, the Bosnian defender. Of course he knows he was there. Yeah, he's hanging in there against him, so you can't put his studs up. So you can't put his studs up again. Hold on, he didn't put his studs up, he was planting his foot, he was planting his right foot for balance.
38:51Yeah, but he put his studs up in order to do that, which you can't do. What do you mean put his studs up? He was putting his studs down for balance. He should try. He can't hop about in one leg. His studs are halfway down his legs, if you get that still up again. Wait, one, that's messy. Halfway down his legs. No, I'm talking about Balogun. If we pull up that image there, you can see his studs. His studs are halfway down his shin, Craig. No, his studs is on his ankle because he's trying to plant his foot for a natural movement. I think the fair point from Craig is the consistency that he's talking about, about decisions.
39:25Right. Yes, when you see Messi and he's doing, whoever he is should have been a red card. And therefore, the consistency of giving a red card to Balogun would have been fair. So that's what I mean. But I'm more with Kieran. I'm not even so sure it should be a red. I think for the magnitude of the game and the moment, I think a yellow would have been more of a logical thing for the referee to do. He knows he hasn't done it intentionally. The same with Messi. you know the type of player he is he's not a malicious player and the other player is not injured that's the main point for me Messi's was a malicious challenge I'm not having it any other way he knew what he was doing are we going to send a player off for every team in this tournament now going forward if they unintentionally by a natural movement step on somebody's ankle it should be like that if that's the criteria it shouldn't it has to be Do you want to see a straight red every time that happens?
40:30Every time somebody plants a foot and a natural movement of getting you balanced you can't hop about on one leg you have to have balance with two feet on the ground and at some point one foot has to be off the ground for the movement are we saying every time somebody unintentionally steps on an ankle if there's a little ankle roll that's a red card? Are you saying that if the player that has been tackled is injured what do you do? Well, it doesn't matter. The injury... You give a red card. No, you don't give a red card. You can't send somebody off because of the consequences of an injury. You can't.
41:07No, no, you can't. We've had this argument before. We've had this argument before. You can't do that. You're going to be safe because you didn't pay attention. You didn't do it on purpose. But you injured somebody. And for me, if you injured somebody, whether you did it on purpose or not, You should be banned for the time the guy is injured. Frank, this is another conversation. This is the World Cup. At least you should get it. Yeah, but whatever it is, a red card should be done, should be given because you injured a player. Frank, I could toe poke a ball away at full speed from a player and barely touch his ankle and he could roll that ankle and be out of the rest of the match.
41:50What means barely? It might not even be a free kick. The game is played at such pace these days that these things happen. And I think what we saw there is a classic example of a referee not understanding what the involvement is of the movement of a player. But what he did understand was stills and slow-mos. And when he saw them, he said, that ankle's rolled. That must have been a bad challenge. I'm sending him off. And that's not the case. How big a deal is it going forward now to not have Balogun in the Belgium game? It's a huge blow. A huge blow. He's been one of the stars of the team. Probably you would say, you know, we've got Pepe that can come in, but arguably he is the difference maker.
42:31And especially he was really starting to gel with Christian Pulisic as well. And they've just got momentum. And you have to say that that's been taken away from them a little bit now. Yeah, absolutely. You've got Haji right, you've got Pepe. Not the same quality of player that we've seen from Balogun, who's impressed us all so far in this tournament. Yeah, but against a Belgium defense who's pretty heavy, I would say, that could be another tool. And if you play Pepe as a striker and police each around him with the pace that they keep, the enthusiasm that the U.S. main national team showed, you can make the difference.
43:05And I'm pretty optimistic about that. Balogun will be missed for one game, hopefully. But otherwise, you know, I'm not really concerned about the fact that Pepe can do the job and the guys, if they keep the pace, they're going to score goals. Well, he hasn't played well thus far, given the opportunity, Pepe. No, exactly against Turkey. And when he came on. When he played against Australia, he was not good. Although he played as a partnership with Balogun because he changed the shape because Pulisic was out. I don't think he'll do that at this time. He'll play one lone striker. Nobody can do what Balogun does for this US side.
43:42Nobody can stretch the defence like him. Nobody can score goals like him, which is proven. and nobody has the confidence. And that's the other side of it, is when you're in a tournament like this and it's such a global event, the biggest for our sport, and you're on a run like Balogun was on, you're 10 feet tall. You're 10 feet tall. You think everything that you're going to do, everything you touch is going to come off. And that's kind of how it felt for him. Right. And they don't have another player, A, with his talent, or B, who's in that mindset. So that's going to be a big call for Pochettino.
44:14That's why he gets the big box. I still think they're good enough I was going to go in predictions next Yours is for the US to go through? Well Belgium You know this Belgium beat the US in March I think 5-2 Yeah But there was at least five players Maybe six That have played in these US games That you would consider The first 11 now That didn't play You feel that the pendulum Has swung a little bit The US have played well Belgium have scrambled They're still reliant on Lukaku And De Bruyne to a certain extent Who were around 12 years ago the US are fresh but Belgium have got a bit more experience you can hear the cogs going I think the US can grind out this Belgium side with their pace and their energy I think they can do it and then it will stop at the quarters that's where I'm kind of aware but I think they can squeeze by this I don't think they would have beat Senegal if it had been Senegal it was going through in the bracket had Senegal gone through and Senegal beating the US but now that Senegal were knocked out and they shot themselves in the foot I think the US can beat Belgium you have to for the fans I'm talking to the fans right now you know start being mad start being crazy guys you know we saw the Mexican playing against the Ecuador get crazy you have to get mad you play at home your national team is going to play with the fans aren't playing they are Yeah, but they're going to play the 12 men.
45:46And that's what we need. That's what the U.S. men's national team need. We saw that in Mexico with Ecuador. That was intense. That was crazy. If the fans of the U.S. men's national team can do the same, you can beat Belgium. So your prediction? Belgium. 2-0. 2-0 for the United States. For the fans. For the fans. For the fans. Wow. It's going to come down to momentum. them against experience. For me, I think with Balogun missing now, it may just... I don't want to say it because I'm really enjoying watching the US. You're going to say it. But I think this one might be a step two. Country round is...
46:26Unless they blow them out in the first 20 minutes. I think if they score in the first 20 minutes, there's a chance. Belgium came back last time. Yeah. From 2-0. They'll have too much energy, I think. Okay. Well, we will We'll find out, of course. We'll continue our campaign. Hold on, you've gone for Belgium or the US? I've gone for Belgium. He just said the US have got too much energy for Belgium. Yeah, if they score, if they score early. I'm confused. He's confusing me. He's already confused. 48:25A comfortable win for Switzerland in the late game sets them up with a clash against Colombia or Ghana in the next round. Switzerland got good, didn't they? It wasn't really a contest, did they? Yeah, not really. I don't think a big surprise. They're a side that always generally gets to the knockout stages. And with their organisation and, of course, the early goal from Embola, then they set themselves off on a good footing and were never really in trouble. So, yeah, I'm not a surprise Switzerland have gone through. And no extra time or penalties, Frank. Which is very good for us. But, yeah, it's a fair result, a deserving one, and nothing to really explain.
49:04I think they did what they had to do. They were very serious, very well organized. And the Algerian didn't show enough. Yeah, they got it done early, really. There wasn't too much drama. Exactly. It was a really dynamic performance from Switzerland. I loved the front three. I thought they were excellent. Some really good wing play. Energetic strikers getting across the front of goal. And they caused Algeria problems all game, really. It was a dominant performance. I tip them to get to the quarters at least Right Yeah, I think they're looking They're looking like they're here for business They're not just looking like they want to take part They're a strong side The best thing about this game was the pizzas Oh yeah, what did you have?
49:49Oh, a bit of everything Did you? In the green room Oh, it was magnificent Frank said, I do not eat these pizzas I have to look after my body No, of course not I'm on diet right now I try to stay fit. Right. Yeah, because I don't want to be caught upside at some point. Always ready. Right, beautiful. Salad chicken. There's been so much content here on ESPN FC throughout the World Cup. A number of guests. Don Hutchinson's been the butt of a lot of jokes, really. Deservedly so, considering some of the daft things that he says. However, he got some love today from a former Liverpool colleague. Even the most neutral person loves watching Alise Mbappe, Dembele, Ambar Kola or Dwey.
50:34They're fantastic to see. They play football the right way. How much would you have loved to play with those players, Maka? No, no, no. I'd love to play with Hutch, that's about it. I'm not going to buy Mbappe and stuff.
50:50Hutch looks like he's aged, by the way, being here for quite a long time. What was happening? Is it the lightning in the studio? I don't know. Man, they didn't mention you guys, though. Mac has patience with you. He's coming out in a few days, isn't he? Yeah, I know, and he'll be going back straight away. Kerry's looking forward to listening to Frank. Yeah, yeah. Off camera. Yeah, that is. Well, he loves me. We had lunch and dinner last year. Well, it's not happening. He loves me because I paid. Kerry, are you with us tomorrow? Because then you go to the France game, huh, with your fiancé? Yep, France, and then Mexico.
51:27Future wife. And then Mexico. Lovely. We'll be back here tomorrow. It's going to be hot, Frank, again. Yeah, we have to find something indoor. Craig on the rooftop again. I'm not going on the roof tomorrow for sports. No, I think, look at that for a view. The World Cup then continues as there's our coverage tomorrow. Argentina in action against Cape Verde. Where's your money for that? Stay with us.
51:54Very late night extra time. Craig, Frank and Kiran. What adventures we've had over the last 24 hours. Craig had his first drop, went off and drank on his own because he's had enough of us. Oh, yeah. I love New York. Why do you play the stranger? Do you not like us anymore? Sorry, somebody talking. Kiran took us to an awful bar to watch the game. Oh, my God. And you lost it. Five minutes. Get me out of here, please. Yeah, I did. I had a bit of a strop. It was hot. It was too busy. Too many people. You know, for old people, we found a very nice restaurant. What kind of bar was it? It was just a nice bar.
52:30It was a nice bar, but it's too hot. It's outdoor. Then we had a tete-a-tete. And we had a tete-a-tete. Divas, dealing with a bunch of divas. And a nice Italian restaurant. Yeah, it was nice. And then we had a great seat for the Spain game today. That was fantastic. That's enough of it, you. Very cool. Right, OK. 185 million guaranteed on two players who didn't make it to the World Cup. Is it a mistake from Spurs? These are Mateus Fernandes and Tonali who look like they're going to know Flanders. Suddenly we go back to the Premier League. Yeah, I know, it's weird. It doesn't feel right, does it?
52:59Yeah, yeah, what's wrong with that people asking the question? You know, follow them in World Cup and leave us alive. Yeah, it does. It's not Sandra Tonali's fault that Italy had garbage at the moment. Right, yes. Mateus Fernandes, who's playing a bad West Ham side. Good players. That's good business for Tottenham. Yes. They've got a good manager. They're spending money, otherwise he'll throw a strop and leave. So they have to back him. So yeah, it's been good early business, actually. Isn't it easier when you're a coach to know that your chairman or the board is going to spend like millions of dollars or pounds to make sure you have good teams or good players?
53:36Yeah, I think that's generally easier. Frank, thanks for that point. And Kieran. No, but what the work to do after? Yeah, I've got good players. It's easy. Well, yeah, I don't know. How much have Chelsea spent? Why do you want to compare with Chelsea? Because you're the one who's bringing it up and saying, oh, it's easy if you spend the money. You spend over a billion and you're rubbish. Yeah, on young players. Oh, wow, that's a really good point. I was very critical about that. Don't put me in that door. Says Frank De Boeuf when he signed for Chelsea for Marseille and then we signed Gianfranco Zola.
54:04I didn't see him complaining about it then. Nobody knew who I was. They knew. Just signed Gianfranco Zola. Yeah, they signed Gianfranco Zola. What miracle needs to happen, Frank, to stop France winning the World Cup? I think we can agree that if France keep on playing the way they play, with the same spirit on top of the talent that they have, nobody can catch them. For me, that's simple as that. But the best enemies of France is themselves. And I'm pretty sure it can happen. The first 20 minutes of the last game against Sweden, I was worried. I said, well, they're not into it. Right. And it was like the warm-up for them for like 20 minutes.
54:46But they went better. They started to play the way we wanted them to play. But it can happen. And against Paraguay, if they're not 100 % sure or they're not 100%, they can be surprised because Paraguay, like in 98, they're going to park the bus and they're going to wait for the penalty shootout. And you can be kicked out. You're going to the Paraguay game. I am. Stupidly. Why are you going there? My other half is from Paraguay Oh You're such a gentleman Frank, you're going to get me some tickets Because I don't have tickets yet No, I give tickets to Dan Thomas To see Brazil with his wife But that's it Because he's But he likes him He's English It's France Frank, you're a French fan I don't want you to win Are you proposing at this game?
55:31Oh Wouldn't that be lovely How romantic On TV or the camera Maybe you'd like to do it now Which cameras Why are you putting me on this? What's the point? The same way you get married, you're old enough. You're not spring chicken. Frank, do you think Morocco is a real contender for this World Cup? Don't you think that teams like France, Spain or Argentina would not like to play against Morocco? They're very good. Do you think so? They're very good. And you know, the best example is that young 18-year-old player, Bouhadi, in the middle of the park. He played for all the national youth for France, but now plays for Morocco and the guy is exceptional and you have Hakimi of course but you have so many other players that are very strong and they give 100 % so if you don't take them seriously some teams can be surprised France will play them in quarterfinal if it goes well next time because they're playing Canada and France are playing Paraguay and therefore he's going to and proposing because of our past and our history he's taking a ring with him isn't that beautiful suddenly they don't care about my answer.
56:38I don't think that's ever changed. Yeah, it's true. No, but I think really, especially against France, France-Moroco is going to be very special. So it's why it's going to be tricky for France. So let's see. To all, has anyone seen proof the ball touch technology work at detecting hair? If so, surely any insect would also cause a spike. How can we be certain a creation player actually touched it? I don't want to answer that question. Hair? And then shake. Yeah. Now you can see the spike. It doesn't work for me. That's true. It would touch your head, would it? I don't have hair. Yeah, but your head's big enough.
57:16There's nothing in your head, but you've got a head. You've got a head, it's empty. That's why we call you Empty Head. It's empty.
57:26It's very late. This is deteriorating. It did click. The thing clicked, whatever you call it. It clicks, it spikes. Does Ronaldo's disallowed goal penalty and man-of-the-match performance at the age of 41 against contenders Croatia cement his GOAT status, Kieran? Honestly, I was a bit sceptical as a Messi fan, but Ronaldo's longevity is changing my perspective. That's a massive troll, surely. Yeah, I mean, he wasn't man-of-the-match, was he? No, I don't think he was man-of-the-match. Where do you stand on this Messi-Ronaldo debate at whatever time in the morning this is? I don't like to compare.
58:02Well, tough. That's what you get paid to do. I don't think we should. I don't think it's comparable. Of course it's comparable. Who would you choose? Who would you prefer to play for Arsenal? Would you want Ronaldo or Messi? Messi. Oh, there we go. So it's easy to do. Who would you want to read your votes? Messi or Ronaldo? Who would you like to give you away? Would you like to marry Ronaldo or Messi? Ronaldo will take you to the end of the aisle and go, Sue, and that'll be it. To be done. What a lovely moment. That'll be a sight. Congratulations. Yeah. It's beautiful. Well, it really is. You missed your congratulations.
58:37Some mates here. Commeneration. Now's the time to book Madison Square Gardens. She just told me she wouldn't be available on Saturday. She doesn't want to come. No, no, no. All right. That's what he wants. That's it. We are done. We will be back tomorrow to look back at some more soccer that apparently is taking place in the World Cup. Please be sure to join us.
