0:34Hello everyone and welcome into our ESPN FC studios for the latest edition of the show. I'm Alexis Yunus alongside Shaka Hissop. We're going to kick things off in the Premier League because on Thursday, it was an enticing matchup with the league leaders. Arsenal facing off against the Premier League champions, Liverpool. But it ended in a nil-nil stalemate. This is a look at what the English papers had to say. A sigh of the storm. Ooh, the battle of the guns did not turn out to be the blockbuster we expected. This is how it affected the table. Not that much. Arsenal still flying clear at the top of the table.

1:10Six points ahead of Manchester City and Aston Villa. Let's welcome in our Julian Lerons for this one. Jules, we know how close you are with Arsenal after the 0-0 draw with Liverpool. Are you cool with that result? I was at the game, Alexis. and to be fair, I agree with some of the headlines that we've just showed. It was not the most entertaining game. Usually on the show, we say it was very tactical, which it was. It was cagey. You have to look at the Liverpool game plan, obviously, going into this game and the fact that with Witts as a force number nine, Gagpo on the left, Frimpong on the right and that midfield very narrow out of possession with Gravenberg and McAllister and Soboslai and Witts, they basically nullify the creativity from a personal point of view.

1:54they let the ball to Gabriel and Saliba, who, by the way, are the two Arsenal players with the most passes in the last third of the pitch on third and out, which is crazy because if you're Arsenal, you don't want Gabriel and Saliba to have the ball in the last third of the pitch and try to find the creativity with them. So the plan from a Liverpool point of view to give nothing to Arsenal attacking-wise worked perfectly. The problem if you do that when you're Liverpool is that you yourself don't have much creativity and that's the problem. For the first time, I think, in over 10 years, Liverpool had zero shot on target in the Premier League game, which, again, is so rare that it was very significant.

2:30Xhaka, your thoughts on the game as well? Because on paper, it read to be a blockbuster, but were you left unimpressed as well?

2:36Frank Leboeuf:I thought it read for an Arsenal win, in all honesty. Listen, we saw these two meet at Anfield very early on in the season. It's almost like Screamer was the difference then. But I thought Arsenal have grown since that game, and you can make the argument that Liverpool have regressed. And now in London, I thought this was Arsenal's game to win. Especially when you see earlier in the weekend, both City draw and Aston Villa draw. You think that this is an opportunity for Arsenal. So to see the game kind of play out as dully as it did. And to Juju's point, you kind of understand, or you want to sympathise with Liverpool's approach.

3:16Frank Leboeuf:And that I don't think Liverpool are anywhere near as good a football team as Arsenal. I would have loved to see more from Arsenal in that regard, given everything at stake. Had they won three points, I think we'd all be kind of declaring the title race over. No, it still feels as though there's an opportunity. Arsenal still asked us to lose, but it feels as though there's an opportunity for City and quite possibly still for Villa. So that for me was a little bit of a disappointment. Had it played out differently, had Arsenal drawn on Friday night, let's say, and then you see City and Villadour later on the weekend, it feels a whole lot differently than it does right now.

3:55Frank Leboeuf:I just feel it's a real opportunity dropped by Arsenal. And psychologically, that would have been a tough pill for Ateta to swallow. Jules, the boys on the show yesterday were pretty critical of Jocheres and wanted to see more from him. But also our Frank LaBeouf said that, look, Arsenal just don't set up to really help a striker like him. What did you make of his performance? Yeah, I agree, I think, with what the boys said last night. I've been watching him a lot this season. We saw him a lot last season. I think it's quite difficult to adapt to the Premier League when you come from the Portuguese league.

4:33No offense to Sporting. They were a great team under Amorim, especially in the last 18 months. He worked with Gucares, he did an amazing job. Gucares scored a lot of goals. But when in Portugal you've got the time to take your first touch, for example towards the goal and then find a shot that beats the keeper in England we've often seen Gucas by the time he takes a shot the centre-back has come across or the goalkeeper makes that save it's harder to score here than it is in Portugal obviously and I think sometimes you also realize that this Arsenal team now has been built under Mikel Arteta without a traditional number nine we said it often on the show I'm not trying to defend Gucas here because I think he still should do more.

5:15Yesterday, there's a couple of moments where it's not a clear run that he makes. There's space there, either onto the half space or in behind, and he doesn't really make the run like he should do. However, it is true that this team has played more than not with the fourth number nine, whether that's Havertz, whether that's Gabriel Jesus, that play very differently to the number nine, really more traditional that Jocheres is. So the ball goes wide a lot. There are crosses sometimes, but you don't look at that. You look at all those little passes Odegaard to Saka, Saka to Odegaard, Odegaard to Rice, Rice to Trossa.

5:47The ball comes back and Gokeras is there, but there's nothing really for him to do, really. So I think it's difficult. There's times I watch this team and I think this is not a team for a traditional number nine. I think he will get better. They will get used to him. He will get used to the way the team is playing. But for now, it's probably a little bit underwhelming. Right. Well, a certain Gabriel Martinelli has had to apologize after being involved in an incident with Connor Bradley. That really left a bad taste in all our mouths. Shaka, Connor Bradley, went down with an injury, which we know now was a bit more serious than Martinelli.

6:21You'll see right here, I think he just thought because it was in the dying moments of the game. Don't try to excuse us. He thought that he was time-wasting.

6:30Frank Leboeuf:Don't try to excuse us. I thought this was absolutely awful from Martinelli. I honestly, I'm watching this game and I cannot believe what I am seeing. It's safe to say, had this been back in our day, this would not have finished on the touchline. This would have spilled out into the tunnel well after the game was finished. That being said, just purely from a footballer perspective, on the park, somebody goes down. We all have to deal with injuries, serious, minor, everything in between. No injury, nothing that's at stake warrants the response of Gabriel Martinelli there. And I found it absolutely, I cannot understate how disgusted by it I found it.

7:25Frank Leboeuf:Now, the injury to Bradley, as it turns out, is even worse than anybody first thought. That is not an excuse for Martin Allardy's reaction. But it just makes it so much more distasteful to see that. And now you have to come out and apologize on social media. What value is that? What value is that to react to a fellow professional in the way that you did? Now you come out on social media and that's supposed to make it all right. I'm sorry. He's fortunate just to get a yellow card for it. As I say, both officially and unofficially, I thought it warranted a whole lot more. You know you've messed up when you get the disgusted Shaka Hisskart voice.

8:14But Jules, your thoughts on it? Yeah, I think Shaka is right. Martinelli made a mistake. It can happen in the heat of the moment. I think the tension was really high in those last minutes of the game. He went straight to the dressing room to apologise to Conor Barley in person, even before the social media apologies. I think he realised pretty quickly that he should have behaved differently than he did. You can understand the Soboslav reaction, and I thought Soboslav was good in the post-match interview that he gave as well, talking about the health of the players, because this is the most important really here.

8:47And I think he, again, he made a mistake, realized it very, very quickly. And I think he would apologize in public and in private. Well, Jules, we want to talk about a transfer. Of course, it's a January transfer window, but one that has already been confirmed. And that's Antoine Semenyo, who has signed for Manchester City from Bournemouth. There you go. £62.5 million is the fee that both clubs have agreed upon. Jules, how does he fit in at City? That's a great question and I think that's a great debate as well, to be fair. I think first and foremost, if you can sign Antoine Semenya right now in January, if you have that money available, if you can add him as an option to your squad, whoever you are, you do it.

9:33And that's why all the top clubs were interested in him. City were the quickest. They maybe were the ones who wanted him the most. That's probably fair to say as well. More than Chelsea, more than United, more than Liverpool, more than Arsenal. But if you had asked any of those managers, do you want Semenyo in your squad for the second half of the season? All of them would have said yes. So great option. In this team, I think the best thing to start with on Semenyo is two-footed. It's as simple as that. He is, I think, with Ryan Scherke, the most two-footed player in the Premier League right now.

10:04City will have them both. That means he can play on the right. He can play on the left. Half of his goals so far this season have been with his right foot, the other half with his left foot. He shoots as much with his right foot than his left foot. He dribbles as much starting from the right than starting from the left. It's so unpredictable that you can play him on either flank and the defender won't know where to go because Semenyo can go either way. That's the first thing. The second thing is a pressing machine. Physically one of the most powerful wingers or attacking players in the league.

10:32So for what Guardiola wants to do with his team and with Pep Linders, his new assistant, in terms of intensity and verticality, Semenyo is perfect for that. More than a Doku, more than Savinho, more than any player that can play. that can play wide really in the city squads, he will be there. He will be the first to trigger that press and that counter press to a really high efficiency. And other wingers I mentioned, he is a finisher. In terms of goals and assists, he's been outstanding for the last 18 months now to the point that even if he takes a lot of shots and maybe he will need to adapt that part of the game to his new team, it's great to have because you know the numbers will be there and you won't rely just on Erling Haaland to score all those goals.

11:13Xhaka, this is a question I asked you too because I was saying, given the way Manchester City are going and also the fact that Jeremy Doku has been performing quite well, but Antoine Semenya is a player who is in form right now. So does he walk onto this Manchester City team and say replace a Doku immediately?

11:30Frank Leboeuf:Not replace a Doku, replace the other side of Doku. I think he makes Manchester City better. And while we, moments ago, I was saying this is Arsenal's title to lose, Manchester City have drawn the last three games And all of a sudden, that lead that Arsenal enjoy at the top is withered way into nothing. Now, I made this point after City's draw with Chelsea, where they played Rinders and Bernardo Silva. I felt that without wingers, City just looked very flat, very predictable. When you use a Jeremy Doku or a Savinu and a Savinu, I think they look a whole lot better, especially kind of given Erling Haaland's skill set.

12:07Frank Leboeuf:You don't even need to be good at crossing the ball for Erling Haaland to score from crosses. And there's no question that Semenyo is an upgrade on Savino. So now if you play Doku out on the left where he likes to operate and you use Semenyo out on the right and you are able to have this kind of almost traditional throwback front three with two players staying very wide and one big target man through the middle who cannot stop scoring goals regardless of what the service may be, all of a sudden you have a fearsome front three. Now, City still have issues at the back, which is evident for everybody to see.

12:45Frank Leboeuf:But it makes City a whole lot better, a whole lot more difficult to play against with that front three, with two wingers who, when they get the ball, they give defenses problems. Well, Jules, another name that's being talked about in this January transfer window, of course, is Mark Gay. We know that he's now been linked with Manchester City, Liverpool again, and potentially even Arsenal. But that would be a summer move. So what's the latest on his situation? Yeah, I mean, I don't think we can count Arsenal in the same bracket as the other two. But we know that both Liverpool and City really need a centre-back this January.

13:21City, because of the serious injury to Guardiola, the fight at Stones, we're not really sure what's happening with him. and that Diaz is probably out for another four to five weeks. So they badly need a centre-back and Gehi, Premier League proven in England International, is playing in Europe now. It just ticks all the boxes for City. I know you can get him for free in six months. But for now, even if you have to pay 25 or 30 million, I think if you're City, it's a no-brainer, you do it. Whether Gehi would want to move right now in January instead of waiting and have more options, that's another debate.

13:56but if you're City, you have to try to get him. Same for Liverpool because if something happens to Van Dijk and Konate, you're in big trouble. Well, if you haven't noticed, our Julian Laurent is all over the January transfer window and you can hear a lot more from him when he's allowed to get a word in with Gav Marcotti. 16:12Let's head to Spain to have a look at what the sport newspaper is saying. Habrá Clásico. There will be a Clásico. And they're talking about the final of the Supercopa de España going on in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It's going to be Real Madrid versus Barcelona on Sunday. But Vinny Jr. also stole some headlines yet again after getting into it with Atlético de Madrid manager Cholo Simeone during their semifinal game. And here's what Simeone had to say about their little exchange.

16:42Frank Leboeuf:the first part of the rotation with Vinicius, as soon as in the change, what conversation have you had? If you could say something. No, I have nothing to comment, because what happens in the camp, since we were very little, it's not to comment. But, back to the Vinicius, you see, you see in the eyes, saying that Florentino is going to throw away. Do you have told this to Vinicius? No, I don't remember. I don't remember. I have a hard memory.

17:40Stevie was saying as a former manager himself, this does not sit well with him. Where do you stand?

17:44Frank Leboeuf:Unless the player initiates it, I don't think the manager has any reason or right to be antagonizing a player on the part. If you want to say something and you know you can get under Vinicius Jr.'s skin that way, say it to one of your players. Let them get under his skin in that way. I don't see how this should be accepted in today's game. If we're going to be upset with the likes of Arteta for running up and down the touchline, how can this be acceptable? I'm not a fan of it at all, and that's putting it as nicely as I can. Jules, is Shekka just being old and boring? Because I'm a fan of it. What do you think?

18:26I think it's part of the game. I've got no problem. I don't really like it. I think as a manager, I do think you need to have a certain behavior because the players are on the pitch. You can have incidents. The manager is there on his touchline, in his area. I think he has a certain behavior to have. But it's part of the game. I think there's a lot more managers than we know, than we think, that are doing these kind of things, really. And players too, to be fair. He goes both ways. But I'm a bit like Xhaka. It's not that we're boring. I just think that managers should be classy. and should be above all that kind of things.

19:01Between players, it's a little bit different. That kind of beef, the trash-talking, I can understand it. Between a manager who is usually much, much older than the players on the pitch, it should not be happening. Oh, come on. You know Cholo Simeone. His blood runs Italian and very feisty. I'm here for it. But, Jules, I think some good news for you. We know that Real Madrid have been without Kylian Mbappe, but Xabi Alonso confirmed that he should be well enough to be travelling to Saudi Arabia now to play in that final against Barcelona. And look, if Mbappe is going all the way there now, surely he's going to start that game, right?

19:36It's very interesting, Alexis, because I was told tonight that he's not too keen on starting that game. He's just, let's say, he's more cautious maybe than the club and Xabi Alonso. And as we saw against Atletico, even with the win, they still miss him when he's not there. I know Gonzalo scored a wonderful hat-trick against Betis the other night, and that was his moment. perfect, but we also saw against Atletico that when he's not on a good day like he was, then they struggle a bit more. They need Kylian badly. The thing is, he will have training tomorrow, the day before. So on Saturday, the day before the final, to see how he feels, to test a little bit the knee, and then he will take a decision.

20:15But for what I was told tonight, the club and Xabi Alonso clearly wants him to start that game. For him, I think he's a bit more cautious. Alright, well there's a lot of headlines heading into this one. And just to remind you that it's going to be a Clásico in the final of the Supercopa de España like we have seen many times before. These two teams really know how to put on a show. Barcelona against Real Madrid. That is on Sunday, 2 p.m. Eastern time on ABC. Harry Douglas here. Game day brings the excitement. 22:00Brexham took on Nottingham Forest in the third round of the FA Cup, and it was smooth sailing for the Red Dragons as they were leading 2-0 at halftime. But then Sean Dyche made some very crucial changes for Nottingham Forest in the second half, bringing on the likes of Morgan Gibbs-White and Callum Hudson-Odoi, who made all the difference for Forrest Hudson-Odoi, scoring a brace that forced the game into extra time and then penalties. But then it went Wrexham's way as they managed to advance 4-3 on pens. All right, let's welcome in the rest of our crew who are pitch side at the race course ground, who witnessed all of this from start to finish.

22:38Alex Aljo clearly did not want any of us to go home early and chill out because she predicted extra time. She predicted penalties. Alex, what an absolute blockbuster of a game. I did. I did, didn't I? I said 1-0, though, didn't I? Not 3-0. It was an absolutely unbelievable cup tie. Another chapter in Wrexham's fairy tale. What a night for Phil Parkinson and his players. Oh, my gosh. What a night. What a game. What an occasion. And what a great atmosphere as well. the place was bouncing from the first whistle to the final whistle obviously when the the winning penalty goes in as well and the goalkeeper makes a great save for for the final penalty wow we the eruption the sound was absolutely out of this world i loved it this is what we love about football the underdog story we've seen it again you know i love it this is this is me all in a nutshell nottingham forest did well though didn't they to come back from behind and we saw the strength of their bench maybe compared to Wrexham's.

23:39There were some nervy moments in extra time for Wrexham. The fans couldn't look, could they? No, and listen, when you look at the quality of the bench of Nottingham Forest, you look at the value of the players as well, you understand why they're Premier League side. You understand why the expectations is much higher than what the performances are. You know, last season they finished seventh in the Premier League, you know, European football this season. It's a shame that the fans aren't able to get behind something, behind nice football, entertaining football, especially what we saw in the second half.

24:13And it was disappointing from a Forest perspective. But look, we have to put that to one side, and we've got to give the props to Wrexham. They were fantastic today. They were resilient. Obviously, it was difficult. They were up against a Premier League side. But they've shown they could rub shoulders with some of the Premier League's, well, with Premier League quality teams. Absolutely, absolutely. A historic night for Wrexham. And you said it could actually be a good thing, maybe, for Nottingham Forest that they didn't go through tonight. Yes, I did. And the reason I said that is because now they've got no distractions.

24:47You know, they can focus solely on the Premier League. And it's disappointing, don't get me wrong. But look, when your results aren't really going your way, there. They've lost five of the last six games in all comps. They've got to knuckle down. They've got to figure it out. They've got to get together and really start finding their feet again. Maybe this is the catalyst for that. Speaking of distractions, though, what does this mean for Wrexham? Because they want to go to the Premier League, but now they're on a cup run as well. Exactly. Listen, they want to try and go as far as they possibly can in the Premier League and in the FA Cup.

25:22And why not? Why not dream? You know, the last three years have been absolutely out of this world who's to say that it should be ended now nobody I say give it your all in every single game Phil Parkinson has done a phenomenal job obviously the owners everybody knows about those guys as well but you know on a day-to-day basis the boss is in there working with these players and getting the absolute maximum out of every single one of them long may it continue for him Jermaine who's stood out for you today I know that you thought Sam Smith put a shift in didn't he Do you know what? Yes, and I do feel for him a little bit considering he didn't score a goal.

25:57However, I thought he was brilliant. I thought he led the line really well against Premier League opposition. I thought he was just a pest. He was non-stop. So as a centre forward, as a number nine, I have to give it to him. But every single one of those players today, including the boys that were on the bench that came on, I thought they were all superb. Ava Nottingham, Boris, what a difference Callum Hudson-Doy made when he came on. For me, when he came on, he was the best player on the pitch. Head and shoulders above everybody else. He came on almost like he had a point to prove, a little bit of a bee in the bonnet.

26:32Best player on the pitch. Created some great opportunities. He was very positive, very direct every time he picked the ball up. Obviously, he got himself a couple of really, really good goals. Really well taken. Maybe should have had a third, but he was desperate to get the hat-trick. So maybe he made the wrong decision on one or two occasions. But we're talking about a player who, in my opinion, is playing slightly below his standard, below the quality that we know he possesses. But again, you could throw that argument out there for the majority of these players in Forest. And he scored his penalty, didn't he, Callum Hodgson-Doy?

27:03Very well taken. You said you loved taking penalties. Oh, yeah. Never missed, he said. No, no, no. I missed one. I missed one, but I scored the rebound. He never missed because he didn't go up against the Xhaka Hisslap in goal. Let me tell you that, Shaka, it makes a difference there. There we go, there we go. He would have intimidated me. Oh, that's exactly what he does. Look at this man. Intimidating indeed. But Shaka, I mean, we've covered Wrexham for quite a bit. You know, I've covered a couple of their cup runs as well. Like I said, under the new ownership with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the furthest they've made it in the FA Cup is the fourth round.

27:35They're back again in the fourth round. But they've now taken a Premier League club as their latest scalp, which is something they've not been able to do. This feels like another level that they've reached.

27:45Frank Leboeuf:Well, it's a moment for Wrexham to enjoy, certainly right now, given the result, given the fact that they're still in the hat. We see what the draw throws up for them in terms of what comes next and breaking their own record in terms of how far this club has gone in the FA Cup, Sydney, in recent years. And while you enjoy this moment, I think once it settles down, once it does settles a little, there's a lot for Phil Parkinson to take away from here. I think at times, Wrexham controlled this game, they dominated the game. But from the time Sean Dyche made substitutions on the half, Morgan Gibbs-White, how he...

28:25Frank Leboeuf:There were a couple others, including at the back. But Morgan Gibbs-White and the quality that he brings completely transformed the game and got all the momentum in Nottingham Forest's favour. And then Hudson-Odoi came on 25 minutes or so after that. and that entirely swung the tie. So from dominating, albeit an all-changed Nottingham Forest, who themselves are far too close to the bottom three, to the introduction of two or three quality players completely changes tie. And I spoke about this before the game, that Wrexham will take this opportunity to know where they are, where they are in terms of a Premier League pecking order.

29:07Where do you feel they are now after what we saw?

29:09Frank Leboeuf:what we saw in the second half, I think they still have a lot to do. And I know that's a difficult task. Can they give me spending that's occurred all throughout this meteoric rise they've had to the championship to this point? And then you're faced, if you do get promoted, and they themselves are just outside the playoff spots, if you do get promoted, do you stick with those players who got you into the Premier League? Or do you bring in players who, at the very least, you believe are Premier League quality and will keep you there. And that's always the conundrum that every single manager, every single football club who are promoted has to deal with.

29:47Frank Leboeuf:Do you show faith or do you look for quality elsewhere? But those are the problems that football clubs and football managers want to have. Right now, I think if Phil Parkinson is looking back on this 120 minutes, he recognizes that they are still well short of where they should be if they get promoted and want to stay up in the Premier League. Well, on the other side of the coin now is Nottingham Forest, who we spoke about a lot in the pre-show, given their struggles now in the Premier League, given the fact that they've brought in Sean Dyche, who is a survival specialist. We know where their priorities are.

30:21But should Sean Dyche probably have played a stronger 11, you think, considering the pendulum swung in their favor much in that second half?

30:28Frank Leboeuf:Well, I said, again, at kickoff, If Forrest go out, they then have those, well, Sydney, I think fourth and fifth round, you've got free weekends. You've got those opportunities to rest players, to look, because right now, survival is absolutely paramount. And while, yes, they got the better of West Ham on the weekend, and that put a nice little buffer between themselves and third bottom. But you even said a good cup run would actually boost them. I feel a good cup run boosts those ambitions. So that was my feeling pre-game. And then all of a sudden, he makes his changes at halftime. Forrest are by far the better team in the second half.

31:09Frank Leboeuf:Get themselves back to 3-3. And at the very end of the game, makes changes during extra time. And I felt they didn't really replicate what you saw in that second 45. extra time played out as two teams just trying to get to penalties. And that was a disappointing thing from a Nottingham Forest perspective as far as I see, especially after the first half. Well, I don't think Phil Parkinson, Wrexham manager, will be disappointed at all with what he saw from his boys. And he's pitch side with Alex Aljo right now. Let's hear from him. Yeah, Phil Parkinson certainly not disappointed with what he saw this evening.

31:51Phil, huge congratulations through to the fourth round. Knocked out Nottingham Forest. How do you feel? Yeah, really good, actually, because I always want us to acquit ourselves well when these big days come, and I felt we did. Unlucky not to win in normal time, and I felt it deflated. It's like it's naturally that that's going to happen, and we went into extra time, and there was a feeling of acceptance almost in the ground and the team, and we had to raise ourselves again and credit to the lads for the character because after Christmas period to go into extra time against the Premiership team is one almighty effort from both sides, but from us in particular playing against the team of the pedigree of Nightingale Forest.

32:30What pleased you most about that performance tonight? I think we carried, I was pleased we carried a threat all night in terms of the attacking play. We always looked like we could create and score against them and even, you know, through some tired legs we still had some great chances to have taken the game away from them. So, you know, that's obviously always pleasing that we look like we can create chances. Do you know what? One of my favorite things is, as you just mentioned there, you continue to offer chances and opportunities. Against the Premier League side, that is fantastic. Congratulations on that.

33:03Congratulations on the performance in itself and obviously the result. There are areas to improve on naturally, which we're expecting. You're up against the Premier League side, so they are going to find those areas. Is there anything in particular that you're looking at improving for the next round? or obviously the victory speaks for itself, doesn't it? I think if you look at it, and I'm sure when we analysed the game back, the moments where we didn't defend quite right, you get punished. And that is the next level up. You know, like the header on the back stick and I think we got done on a one-two and little moments.

33:37The detail has got to be that little bit notch higher than it is. As we've come up through divisions, we've realised it. Now tonight we're as a premiership club and if you don't get the detail right, you can get punished. But equally, like you say, it's a bit of a trade-off because we had quite an attacking team on the pitch tonight and we always looked like we could score at the other end. Had you been practising penalties this week in training? We did have a practice yesterday yeah, glad we remembered yeah, so we did and listen, pleased for Jay Rodriguez I've got to give Jay a special mention because he's been out injured all season and tough but he's such a great lad to have around the building and he's had a great moment tonight but obviously Arthur will take the headlines and that's very special for him and two great saves.

34:22Phil, how do you manage this now? Obviously push for promotion but at the same time could go on a really exciting cup run. Yeah, listen, we're in it tonight to win the game, you know what I mean? And I just think cup runs bring momentum and confidence and the feel-good factor if it needed to be heightened as tonight. so yeah great and we've got a good squad we may add to it but we've got good players coming back Lewis Brunt's back in training this week we've got Danny Ward back in training Andy Cannon's back so we've got other players coming back in as well so the squad will be even stronger when we come to the next round Do they get their day off tomorrow?

35:00They've definitely got their day off tomorrow Party with Ryan this evening? No I think Ryan's going back but listen it was great to see him before the game and it's very special when our owners come here they see kind of the feeling of the emotion in the ground again. I don't know if they've seen it time and time again, but it's just a reminder what this club means. Just finally, before we let you go, Shaka Hislop's in the studio and he wants to say congratulations to you. Huge congrats, Sparky. Huge congrats. Great to hear from you, mate. Good to see you. There is a good goalkeeper. Great goalkeeper.

35:31Great goalkeeper. They did too. Oh, definitely. Thank you so much for your time. Congratulations. We'll see you in the next round. Yeah, brilliant to hear from Phil there. Comes across so well, doesn't he? He does. Listen, and he's enjoying the moment. He's in the moment. And look, well played to himself. The tactics were spot on. And as I mentioned before, every single one of the players, above and beyond, didn't they? They delivered today. Yeah, right. Well, there we go. High praise for you there, Xhaka from Phil Parkinson. I'll take it. I'll take it. Because Phil knows if Xhaka were in goal, we wouldn't have seen a single penalty scored.

36:08That is for sure. OK then. All right. All right, guys. Well, we managed to bring you all the way to the race course. Ground for a nice blockbuster. Where can we catch you next this weekend?

36:19Where are we going to be? We're going to be Everton first thing at the new Hill Dickinson Stadium. Everton against Sunderland, who, by the way, have been the surprise package in the Premier League this season. So I'm really excited for that one. Yep. Will it be as good as this one, though? Will I get my prediction right again? As long as it's not a 1-1. I'm looking forward to it. We'll be live there tomorrow. Yeah, I think we've had enough extra time, at least for this round. Alex Alger, Jermaine Beckford, thank you guys so much. Go get some rest. Go get warm, because I know it's looking very cold out there.

36:55In Bundesliga action, today was a six-goal thriller between Eintracht, Frankfurt and Borussia Dortmund that ended 3-3. They had to share the points. If you have a look at the Bundesliga standings, Dortmund are up to second eight points behind leaders Bayern Munich while Frankfurt are down in seven. For more on this game let's head to Archie Rintut and Jan Reiger-Fjortov. All right well let's have a look at the Bundesliga standings. Dortmund are in second eight points behind Bayern Munich while Frankfurt are down to seven. Let's get some post-match reaction from Archie Rintut.

37:32We know that we face the second team in the Bundesliga, that's a very, very good team with top players. And we wanted to show in our stadium that we have also the quality and the intensity and the power to get a win out of this kind of games. But at the end it's a draw, but I think it was a spectacular game for everybody and we need to continue like this. I think we saw a very spectacular game. So the supporters, I think they enjoyed it as a coach. You're not enjoying it so much when you can see three goals. From my perspective, I think we played a good away game. We deserved more. We had better opportunities.

38:14But when you score in the final seconds, you can be happy. But when I see the whole game, I think we should win the game.

38:23Frank Leboeuf:Try to explain that, because you like to control games and do spectacular things on a control basic. Dino would like to start the season with a control game at home, and then you have a crazy football game, you hit the bar and then they scored 3-2, you are back to 3-3. How does that go into your coach's mind? Yeah, it's very difficult. We said, okay, if you want to get something, you need to have a good defense. So if you concede three, it's difficult to win a game away 4-3. But what we saw today, we did not score only three goals, we had a lot of opportunities as well. So this is what we said, we need to improve because we have the quality of the players, we need to get more chances during the game and this was today the part.

39:10But okay, 3-3, I'm a little bit disappointed to be honest, but after we scored in the final second, I'm happy, so it's okay. Our Archie and Jan Agofiortov there on Bundesliga coverage, and there's plenty more Bundesliga action coming your way this weekend on Saturday and Sunday. The leaders bar in Munich in action against Wolfsburg. That's 1130 a.m. Eastern Time on Sunday. All right, that's it for this edition of ESPN FC, but don't go anywhere because we've got Shaka and Jules answering your questions in Extra Time next.

41:30Welcome into Extra Time. Shaka, I got the questions. I was just trying to make this look a little neater.

41:34Frank Leboeuf:Too neat for that. Because sometimes my mom watches and she can't see it. Everybody's seen the mess you made. Why? We've had a long day. We've had a long day, Shaka. My nice little party. You want another extra time penalty effect up there? No, no, no, no, no. You're struggling to stay awake in that one. I don't know what you're talking about, Alexis. I was awake for one through all. The only reason that Shaka did not fall asleep was because he was afraid our producer, Mike, was going to record him sleeping. That's not true at all. And we will have a highlight for you. That's not true at all. All right, well, our Julian Leroy is joining us and he never falls asleep.

42:05Juice is always awake. Juice never sleeps. No, it's Juice. Juice is a vampire. Does not sleep. Juice is a vampire. I genuinely think he is a vampire. All right, well, let's ask our vampires some questions, shall we? First question, with the addition of Semenyo, how does Pep manage his attacking options? Who should be starting along with Haaland? Jules? Great question. We mentioned it a bit on the show, but that gives, obviously, Guardiola a lot of options. I think what we know from Guardiola and City now in terms of squad building is he doesn't really care so much about egos or who could be disappointed by not playing.

42:40Look at Marmouche, very simple. They bought him last January because they really badly needed another forwards. He didn't play even that much. And now he's not even, I know now he's away with the Egyptian half-com, but even before that, he hardly played this season. So for Semenyo, basically, if you look at Rodri, slash Nico, one of the two and Bernardo Silva, we're probably too guaranteed to start. Forget he's a Guardiola team. Then it's Cherky, Foden, Doku, Savinho, Semenyo, Marmouche, I guess so six players for three positions behind Haaland. Personally I think because of that control that Guardiola still loves and still requires from his team right now I'm not sure how often from the start we will see Doku and Semenyo certainly in big games because I think Scherke and Foden bring a bit of that control but I would personally go for one of Scherke and Foden on the bench and then in some games having Doku and Semenyo on each wings.

43:37Gakko what do you think?

43:40Frank Leboeuf:Drew brings up a really good point there. When you look at numbers. Now, I've been saying, I find City look at their most fearsome when they have two out-and-out wingers. You have Haaland. But then you have Cherky and Foden. Well, to Drew's point, I'd sacrifice Bernardo Silva. I absolutely would. For those two out-and-out wingers. But I'm not sure how you're sacrificing the Cherky or Foden. And then, all of a sudden, you know, that's five players. You've got, what, one sitting in front of a back four. one sitting in front of a back four in a team that concedes as, well, way too much for City and their ambitions.

44:20Frank Leboeuf:That's a bit of a conundrum for Pep Guardiola here. See, that's all I was hinting at in the show. I think this is a conundrum. Not saying if I were Semenyu, I wouldn't have gone, but... No, you just wanted Semenyu to go to Man United. I did. I really did. I don't know why you tried to disguise it. It's a conundrum for Pep. I don't know why you tried to disguise it. Where would he fit in at this point? You just want me to go to Manchester United. Just say that. Never throw in all the flowery. Who's the kind of job? I did. I did. I didn't want to go to Manchester United. Why would he want to, right?

44:52All right. Well, speaking of another dysfunctional team at the moment, Chelsea FC has become a story of rookie owners employing rookie managers to coach rookie players. How many more seasons of this before the more talented players like Cole Palmer and Caicedo begin angling for a move away? Really good question. Jules, what do you think? Yeah, that's a really good question. It'd be very interesting to see what happens with Chelsea and that squad, what they do in the summer. I don't think they will do much in January, but what they do in the summer in terms of what kind of players are you recruiting, what kind of age do you keep going into this very young, below 23 that you will develop and valorise?

45:35sorry or do you maybe think listen we can win something maybe with this very talented bunch of players but we need more experienced players like 28 to 30 or 26 to 30 something like that so but i guess with a manager like liam rosinia now in charge who's a young coach who works really well with young players they probably would keep going like that i still think it's a good project if you're a young player you know that chelsea will give you that platform whether you're 18 19 20 21 and it doesn't matter so much. And I think Rosinho could do a good job there if the gamble that hiring him pays off.

46:10So I don't expect many to want to leave at the end of the season. Jack, do you agree?

46:17Frank Leboeuf:To that point, I was turning to the question, I'm not sure how many can leave at the end of the season. When you look at the length of contract that Chelsea keep putting all their players under, I find that particularly odd. But anyway, you also have to remember that Chelsea did have an experienced coach in Pochettino. and decided to get rid of him at the end of, what was it, one year, whatever it was. It's hard to make footballing sense of what the ownership is doing at Chelsea. On the one hand, you sign young players, put them on long contracts, maybe not big contracts, but certainly long contracts, that I guess you can spread the payments out and make them more financially sensible.

46:58Frank Leboeuf:But then it kind of wards off people. Nobody wants to take on anybody on six years left. Now, who's going to sign Nico Jackson when he's got, what, eight years left on his contract? That's what he's been signed. That can ask your boys. But who's going to sign Nico Jackson with, I think he's got seven years left on his contract, or seven and a half, as you said right now? It just makes no footballing sense, in my opinion. So to the question, who knows what this ownership group is going to do? Or how they're going to view things? Now, Liam Resinia is coming in. Big club, huge expectations, some egos in Nandre's room.

47:39Frank Leboeuf:Listen, I wish Liam Resinia the absolute best, but I just feel that so often chaos in the boardroom and what happens upstairs plays out in the park. And as long as there's this kind of chaos continuing, you just wonder what differences a very good coach make. But you can only hope for him. You can only hope for him, indeed. Speaking of hope, next question, Alexis, what happens first? Manchester United win the Premier League or Wrexham get promoted to the Premier League? Now, I will say this with my chest, with all confidence, we will see Wrexham in the Premier League before Man United, at the rate we're going, wins another Premier League title.

48:22Jules, I'm sure you agree with me. I would love for you to see your beloved United winning a Premier League title soon. She'll be insufferable.

48:34Frank Leboeuf:She'll be insufferable, Juice. I am never insufferable. I celebrate silently in the corner. Yeah, with a tattoo as well. Oh boy. I agree with you on Rexham being promoted as someone. It would take a bit of time too. But it would take more time for United to win another Premier title than Wrexham being promoted. You know, Wrexham now only one point off of playoff spots in the championship. But as we know, the championship is a long season and the playoffs is a whole other different story, Shaka. But what do you think? I agree with Jules. Who is agreeing with me? Just say you agree with me. You know, you just kind of hedge in your bets, really.

49:16Frank Leboeuf:I'm not sure how convinced you are. But to the question and to your point, one point out that the playoff spots in a very good run of form right now, four wins on the spin, good win under their belt against Nottingham Forest in the Cup, all the penalties. So they will be playing with confidence. Their fans will be, you know, supporting them fully throughout. They'll be as loud as they've ever been. I'm not saying it's going to happen this year but I think Wrexham are well poised to make a push in certainly the short and medium team there you go instead of the Red Devils we probably will see the Red Dragons happily in the Premier League indeed it's amazing though can I just say a couple of hours ago this morning Shaka Hissab came into work no idea about Wrexham didn't know what the starting line up is now he's like you know and a point over here and there won their last few games I don't know what their approach was.

50:19It's okay, Shaka. It's okay.

50:21Frank Leboeuf:I thought Parky everything he knows. You did. You did. You did. But Shaka did know the big man, Bill Parkinson. All right. Final question for Jules. Jules, is Man United targeting Luis Enrique for the managerial job? Will they wait until summer to try and get Enrique as long as a long-term replacement for the job? I would just have, literally, this is my answer, right? I've got three words for you and then I can go and go to bed leave him

50:59Frank Leboeuf:Jules about PSG's

51:04That's kind of your messenger should be message I don't even know what Jules said because I think my IV died so I but I could only see when he puts up his hands like that to say stay away from my voice. Leave us alone. Leave us alone. Is that what he said, Chuck? Yep.

51:19Frank Leboeuf:Jules, it's not me. But you know what? Luis, what has he not won so far with PSG, right? Apart from the Club World Cup. So maybe he wants a new challenge and boy, will United be a challenge. Yeah, but you know what? More seriously now. He's not going to leave at the end of the season. He's not going to leave in January. They're discussing an extension to his contract in Paris. but United had the chance they had discussions with him in the past they could have probably gone when he didn't have a job before going to PhD with Luis Enrique and it would have been very interesting to see what he would have done at the club in terms of rebuilding something because he was very good managing the squad and getting the players they wanted so it would have been interesting to see my United but it's not going to happen in the near future I agree And Manchester United miss out on opportunities like Luis Enrique, like so many other managers, and leaves you questioning who they decide to go for.

52:21Frank Leboeuf:That's Manchester United's managerial issues of their own making. I'm sorry, and I'm with Jules fully on this. I'm not sure why Luis Enrique would leave PSG, who they are right now, to take on that challenge. And again, this is just you. Me? Yeah, with your hopeful thinking. Chaka, this is Andas' question. No, don't blame Andas. I am simply reading extra time. I can't even hear what Jules is saying. Don't blame Andas. World producer Mike. I'm shooting the messenger here. I'm going to wait for the drafts to come up. We don't need to talk more about Manchester United. I'm shooting the messenger.

52:58But you know what? Hey, Luis Enrique. You know, if you want to come to Manchester, great gastronomy there. No, he doesn't. Not that nice weather in Paris. What? What? I'm sure you can find it's is it no it's not closer to Spain no no it's not but it's a challenge and every good manager wants a good challenge right you know as you know as a challenge West Ham is

53:21Frank Leboeuf:a challenge I don't see anybody forming a queue for them. Luis Enrique needs to play in the top tier he's the manager in the top tier and West Ham don't look like they want to be in the top tier for much longer. We would say not last year when you were 14th or whoever it was now look at you now look at you boy alright well she'll be insufferable Jules Atayev Manu win the title she'll be insufferable oh there's a graphic I can't hear anything so that is it for ESPN we'll be back tomorrow talking about the FA Cup and previewing the Supercopa de España final let's get out of here Shaka
