In short

ESPN FC Extra Time discusses Florentino Pérez’s unusual Real Madrid press conference, focusing on his “fiery” monologue about internal discipline, fan booing, and defiance toward critics; then shifts to transfer speculation (Julián Álvarez), VAR controversy in Arsenal vs West Ham, and other football news (Chelsea FA Cup build-up, EFL “Spygate,” Gio Reyna, and awards).

Guests and backgrounds

Alejandro Moreno (former player/analyst, studio host); Shaka Hislop (former goalkeeper/analyst); Julián Laurent (Spanish football correspondent/analyst). Also referenced: Sid Lowe (interviewed on Extra Time).

Key claims

Pérez called a press conference without Q&A, said he’s not resigning and will open elections; criticized booing/ultras as “contamination”; argued the Valverde–Chouaméni training-ground incident is being misrepresented; claimed the league is the real issue. Panelists argue his tone was defiant, finger-pointing, and that fines (reported €500k) show the incident was bigger than he claims.

Notable examples

Valverde vs Chouaméni “infiltration” quote; booing at Santiago Bernabéu; VAR audio on Callum Wilson disallowed goal (Pablo/Zardes/Trossard/Rice incidents); Álvarez linked to Barcelona/Arsenal/PSG; Chelsea FA Cup vs Man City; Southampton–Middlesbrough Spygate investigation; Gio Reyna World Cup squad debate.

0:33Dan Thomas:Hello and welcome into the latest edition of ESPN FC. Alejandro Moreno is back in the studio with us. Shaka Hislop is here. My name is Kaye Maureen. We've got lots to talk about tonight, but we will be kicking off in the Spanish capital, which is why we are welcoming in Julián Laurent to tell us a little bit more about what's been going on today because Florentino Perez, the Real Madrid president, called for a press conference. Now, this doesn't happen often, Jules. Why did it happen today?

1:02Julien Laurens:No, you're right, Kev, that hardly ever happens, to be fair. Halfway through the season like this, that Florentino Perez called the media for a press conference. He didn't take any questions, by the way. It was just him. It was a long monologue, him talking. And I think clearly he wanted to make it about himself because we thought probably when we received the statement from Real Madrid that there was this press conference, we thought, okay, it's a difficult season, it's a crisis, we're not sure who's going to be the manager next season, there's a lot of rebuilding to do within this. There was a lot of things for Florentino to talk about, which is fair.

1:36Julien Laurens:And I actually welcome the news. I say, that's good. It's rare that we hear president talking like this or owners talking like this and things like that. And actually, it was just about Florentino Perez himself. It was all about him from start to finish, apart from a little bit around the Chua Meneval Verde incident. But apart from that, it was a disaster class of a press conference. I thought everything he said pretty much sounded wrong. It sounded like not the right thing to say. Maybe because he rarely does those, so that he doesn't really know how to handle those press conferences. But I thought today he had the occasion to put some things right and to actually come out quite well.

2:16Julien Laurens:And I thought in the end it was the complete opposite. A lot of the things that he said was wrong.

2:20Dan Thomas:Yeah, well, as Jules did mention, he did bring up the Federico Valverde-Aurelian Chomeney incident. Let's hear what he had to say about that.

2:46They have fought in all the years in which I've been there. But as young people fight, you give a pat on the S, then the other one you get the back and they are friends. For me, the infiltration is worse, because it implies that there is something more than the fight, that the next day, then, they don't happen, they are friends and they take a coffee. But, man, the infiltration, if I'm not a bad person, I'm going to tell you, I think that in my 26 years of history it's the first time I see it.

3:16Dan Thomas:We're just hearing different stories, it seems, with this whole situation, with this training ground bust up, and this seems to be another one from Florentino Perez here. So Florentino Perez wants us, the media, the fans, everybody around the world who follows Real Madrid and who's interested in Real Madrid to think, this happens all the time. Players fighting with each other, it's normal. And while it may be normal that you will have in the training ground, in the training facility, practice, things get competitive, and you may have a pushing, shoving match here and there and everywhere, what has been reported, it's completely different.

3:57Now, you can believe Florentino Perez, or you can believe the reports coming from Real Madrid, you can believe Fede Valverde, you can believe Chua Meni, and if you believe all those things, or all those four participants, you're believing four different stories. you're believing four different stories how do we know this was a big deal it's not me making it up I didn't levy or impose the fine Real Madrid did and if this wasn't a big deal then why are you fining Federico Valverde and Aurelia Enchua Meni half a million euros if it was just a alright a push and a shove just a kick here and a kick there we see this all the time then why make that statement with the fine?

4:43Again, the stories coming out of Real Madrid are completely different than what we see in the decisions they're making. Their stories are everywhere, and yet the decision that they made within the club is to fine these players the amount that they did. It's a much bigger deal than Florentino Perez is trying to make it out to be. But then he's trying to make it out that the biggest story out of all of this is the league, which is, again, bizarre. Somebody fines me half a million euros, that's it, that's it. That's the biggest story of my life. Yes. For now and forever. I'll be talking about that.

5:15But now all of a sudden, it's not about the initial Real Madrid reaction. It's not about Valverde's statement and then the fine. It's about the league. No. However, Florentino Perez or anybody else tries to paint this, a player ended up in hospital. I'm not sure how a club of Real Madrid's size, stature, important to Spanish football, a player ends up in the hospital and that doesn't come out. You can start questioning leaks all you like. From the time a player ends up in the hospital, it is going to come out. So now all of a sudden, Fiorentina Perez, with everything else, is trying to tell us, nope, look over here.

6:00Look at the birdie over here. nobody is falling for that Florentino not in this situation this venting of Florentino Perez has just made things worse

6:13Dan Thomas:there was a little bit more venting as well from this press conference that was held today where Florentino Perez addressed the booing that we've heard throughout the season from the Santiago Bernabeu here's what he had to say

6:32our children. What a big perversity. Some of these have contaminated some of these that go, especially the ultra-south and especially the reventers. They have to be able to help. And if they need help, then they give them. But what is this? The Roman Church, how is this?

7:04Julien Laurens:Yeah, and I actually don't care I think we all know already He's going to be the thumb down Whether I don't like When fans boo their players Or whistle them, etc I can understand However, on this Florentino Perez is the leader The supremo leader of this club He's been in charge as a president Between 2000 and 2006 And then since 2009 Non-stop until now That's not how a leader behaves. This is not a leader. A leader doesn't just attack his own fans by saying, you shouldn't boo. Why? The results have been bad. The performance has been bad. I think the fans are allowed to show their frustration, to show that they're not happy, to show the discontent.

7:47Julien Laurens:If you're Florentino Perez, if you're a real leader, you say, we're sorry. We understand your frustration. It's been a bad season and we're going to do everything we can so that it doesn't happen next season. And we're going to build something bigger and stronger and instead he was just pointing the finger at the fans and some of the ultras and contamination and this and that before that he attacked the media that follow the club he attacked everybody following the club on top of the league and everything and people making up lies around him on him his his cancer or the fact that he's not well and and things like that and obviously the fact that he was not going to resign but yet he still called elections for which he will have to resign, by the way, otherwise he can't be re-elected.

8:27Julien Laurens:And just on this, if you want to be elected as the president of Real Madrid, if Chaka wants, for example, to be a candidate, say, hey, what about me? You need to have been a socialist for more than 20 years and have a fortune of at least$187 million, which I think Chaka is not too far probably in his personal fortune. But Ali and I in the UK can definitely not stand as a candidate for those elections. So there won't be that many people who can actually go against Florentino in the next election.

8:56Dan Thomas:Yeah, Shaq. Where have you been hiding that money? After I've paid my half a million fine for fighting, I'm living with jewels. Apparently so. We're all moving in with jewels. I'm with the jewels' chateau. Where are you on Florentino Perez bringing up this booing that we've heard throughout the season? Because remember, even the players themselves have been saying sorry to the fans. Again, listen, I don't get it. It's been a disappointing season. Everybody knows that. Nobody needs me to point that out to Ferencino Perez. And that's how the fans will react. Not just once, but twice during the course of the season.

9:30And then given everything that went on during the season, whether we took him with Xavi Alonso, his dismissal, or Vinicius Jr. and his behavior, whatever it is, you go two seasons back-to-back with no silverware, you are going to get that. And to that point, if you call a press conference, address that. or just how it's not going to be three seasons, not you're a little bit too harsh on us here. Those are the standards you set for yourself as a football club. I just don't see how or feel like somebody needs to explain this to the press. I find this amazing on so many levels. The whole tone of the press conference from the moment he sat down was defiant.

10:14Yeah. In every way. There was never an admission of guilt. There was never an admission of we have come up short. There was never an admission of this could be better. This needs to be better. And I'm part of it. There was never any of that. There was every bit of telling all of us not only how many titles has Real Madrid won soccer titles. He also told us about the basketball titles. I'm sure you were interested in those. Yeah. Over his tenure, he was telling us that according to this source and according to that source, Real Madrid is the biggest club, the most expensive club, that all of this have been achieved, all of these things have been achieved in his tenure.

10:59Defending his tenure and also saying with a tinge of arrogance, and I think Jules would agree with this, saying, oh, sure, where are those that want to run against me? All those that have been running this negative campaign against me through the media. Now you'll get the chance to actually run against me as if to say, ha, good luck. I'll open it up. I'll open it up for elections. And all of you that apparently you have a say or you have an opinion as to how this club should be run, I want to see who you are. Come out into the open. Tell the world what your plan is for Real Madrid. and he is basically saying, I'm not going anywhere.

11:42It's the first thing he said when he sat down. No va a ver dimisión, which was the rumor. I'm not going to resign. The rumor was that this was such a momentous occasion that he was going to speak and he was by himself. Think of the optics. It was just one chair, one microphone and then you had the Real Madrid logo behind him and you're thinking, by himself, what is this guy going to do? And the first thing he said when he sat down, I'm not resigning. I'm opening up for elections. And basically, I know I'm going to win. So all of you, you can continue your negative campaign, and it doesn't work.

12:18We are above this. And that tells you that the level of arrogance goes beyond anything that we can understand. He even mentioned the Negreira case as a reason as to why Real Madrid continues to be, in some way, targeted by officials, as to why they're not winning certain things. if you're hanging on to those things instead of addressing what's actually going on inside a locker room and on the field then Real Madrid is going to continue to go backwards rather than forwards

12:45Dan Thomas:it's going to be a long summer it seems at Real Madrid Jules

12:51Julien Laurens:yeah it will be and Ali is completely right I think they will go backwards if they don't change something in there Florentino himself the elections were in three years time so he's moving them forward it would mean nothing because nothing will change again he would be re-elected, he would say look I had 80 % of the votes if not more because he might actually by the way be the only candidate in here so it's either you vote blank or you vote for him so he's going to win again and say look this is it, they've chosen me and I'm going to rebuild this, but how are you going to rebuild this? that's what we wanted to know today this is what was the most interesting for all of us ok he's not resigning, fine so what are you going to do for this team to get better?

13:33Julien Laurens:because the gap between them and Barcelona is just getting bigger and bigger and bigger. And by the way, they have far, far much more money than what Barcelona have. And yet, even with that financial power, look at where they are again. So it's going to be a big summer in terms of rebuilding the club, finding the right manager, maybe even resetting the identity and the DNA of that club with the new manager, with maybe a new team around him too. Because even that, as we've seen with the fight between Chouam and Ivalverde, he seems to be far, far away from the great years.

14:02Dan Thomas:Yeah. Meanwhile, Atletico defeated Osasuna 2-1 We want to talk about a player that Jules has been writing about right now From Atletico, a player who didn't feature today because he's injured And that player is Julian Alvarez And we're talking about an interesting situation here, Jules Because there are some big names that want this player And we wonder what's going to happen next with him

14:27Julien Laurens:Yeah, I think it'll be a very busy summer for Julian Alvarez and his agents especially after the World Cup nothing will happen before the World Cup we'll have to wait until late July and August of course but you can expect a very much Julian saga during the summer because between Barcelona, Arsenal and PSG you've got three clubs there who are keen to sign him he wants to leave Atletico I think he's pretty clear despite having a contract until 2030 at the club he's been there two years although things have been quite good for him in terms of numbers on the pitch for Atletico collectively maybe hasn't been the eyes that he wanted.

15:05Julien Laurens:And certainly his relationship with El Cholo and the way that probably Atletico are playing as well maybe doesn't suit him fully. But I think he wants a new chapter in his career. So if he has really on the table offers from PSG, Arsenal and Barcelona, then he would have to choose what he feels is the best one for him. Maybe not all of them would be at the same level. I don't think Barcelona right now have the financial power than Arsenal or PSG have, for example. so Barca might have to be a bit more creative if they want to recruit Julián Alvarez. But certainly if he has those three offers on the table, then I can't see him really staying at Atletico.

15:39Dan Thomas:If Barcelona could make it work, that's a good fit for you, Ale, right? I think so. I think it's the best fit, really, for Julián Alvarez. And it would be the same profile player that you have for Ferran Torres, but I think an upgraded version of Ferran Torres can give you. Now, what happens with Barcelona and how they go about making this decision, then first you've got to make a decision as to what you do with Robert Lewandowski because then that would open up some space in terms of the money that you're able to spend. You also have to make a decision as to what you do with Marcus Rashford and whether you keep him around.

16:11Depending on what those decisions are, you may just have the financial wherewithal to go and go and get Julian Alvarez. I think the fit is as close as perfect for Julian Alvarez and Barcelona. He is a profile player that can lead the line, but can also play underneath. Why is this important? Because when he decides to go and play underneath, then you have the ability of Rafinha to run beyond Julian Alvarez. You want Rafinha to be a runner anyways. That's what he likes to do and have the freedom to get him behind. He can do that when Julian Alvarez comes and shows for the ball. Similarly to, again, what Ferran Torres does.

16:51I think he's a better finisher than Ferran Torres. That would be a nice competition between the two of them, but I think it would be Julian Alvarez, the number one striker, with Lewandowski out of the picture.

17:00Dan Thomas:Xhaka, Julian Alvarez, Barcelona, PSG, Arsenal, all want your services. Who are you choosing? Barcelona is the easiest fit for me, for all the reasons I just mentioned. Not to mention, he's currently playing in La Liga. I know he was playing in England before. And Barcelona, of the three, traditionally, the biggest of those three. I know PSG's successes over the last couple of seasons, but there's an attraction to Barcelona here that I think just cannot be discounted. I almost want to see it happen just to see how Barcelona make it happen. Barcelona's accounting is always so much fun in the summer to try to follow.

17:41Honestly, I'm inspired by Barcelona's accounting. But, all seriousness, incredibly talented player, I think, makes Barcelona so much better. We've been discussing not just their domestic successes, but how do they translate that into European successes? How do they build on a quarterfinal this year, a semifinal last year? Julian Alvarez is a big piece to that. The reports coming out of Barcelona, you know I was in Barcelona last week. Well, you don't want to hear the reports. I heard you come out of Barcelona. The reports coming out of Barcelona are that Barcelona are very close to being one-to-one when it comes to spending.

18:18and so that would give them more flexibility and more freedom that they haven't had over the last few seasons and that's why they have been as creative as they've had to be in order to make these things happen. If I'm Barcelona, what I have to be careful with is that I finally reached this point in which we're not having to be creative, then maybe you don't go and chase something that is out of your reach. If the math doesn't work with Julian Alvarez, then don't go chase it. But if you can make it happen and you're not in any way putting the future of the club in jeopardy once again, then I think the best decision would be to go after Julien Alves.

18:58It'll be fun is what I hear you see. Well, creative. But fun. Oh boy.

19:04Dan Thomas:Yes, more fun on the way in La Liga in this midweek round. The champions Barcelona are away to Alaves. You can catch that game on Wednesday and then on Thursday. 20:29Dan Thomas:One thing that has happened today is the PGMOL have released the audio on the Callum Wilson 95th minute disallowed goal when Arsenal took on West Ham at the London Stadium. Remember that substitute Pablo was deemed to have fouled David Raya. Let's get more on that.

20:51Possible foul on keeper. Watch is gone. Goal given.

Read the full transcript

20:57Julien Laurens:I don't see any foul on the field. Onfield decision is goal. Checking the onfield decision of goal. Friend by friend.

21:06For me, there is a foul. Potential foul with the arm. his hand is holding his arm down. That's impactful for me. The left arm there is holding, is across the body, is across the head and is holding the left arm of Raya there, which impedes his ability to get to the ball properly. Because I don't like Trossard by facing the ball and you've got... I agree, it's impactful. It's just everything else that's going on as well. So let's say we're saying that so far then what we're saying about Trossard's actions on the same player and what we were saying about Declan Rice behind. He still gets a hand to the ball, doesn't he?

21:45And he's getting to the ball. What's your initial opinions? I think for me, we're sending for an on-field review to look at the possible foul on the goalkeeper. And then we're looking to look at the other instance as well. I think that's the best decision in terms of this.

22:01Dan Thomas:Chakra, I'm coming to you first on this. Yeah, listen, I agree. I thought Pablo Zalma cross-ra was a foul. But again, they mentioned in that discussion, Trossard not at all looking at the ball, wrestling with Pablo. Does that kind of force Pablo, you know, in falling back, his arm to come out? Which came first? Is it Trossard's foul on Pablo coming first? Or did Pablo, having his arm across Raya, was that the kind of initial infringement? I am interested to, now that this is clearly a conversation, or seems to be a conversation between the two officials in the VR room. What was the referee told?

22:47Was he told just to look at Pablo's arm? Was he told to also look at Trossard when he goes to the monitor on the side? Was that ever a or at all a consideration? This just adds to my confusion over the whole scenario. If I may, because this reminds me of when I have arguments at home, and my lovely wife tells me that it's not so much what I say, but it's the tone with which I say it. Apparently, tone is an issue for me. The tone of the VAR official here was very much like, there is a foul, that hand is a foul, it's across the chest of Raya, that's a foul. And then he was very dismissive about the other things.

23:36There may be other things going on. Now, the other official was like, well, I don't really like Trostar just turning his back and grabbing who he's grabbing. But again, the VAR official, the first one, just kind of said, yeah, there's definitely a foul there. We'll call for that. We'll call it for the referee to come and see it and review it. And we'll mention the other things if he wants to take a look at them. See, it's leading the witness. is my point. It's leading the witness. And if that's the way they presented it to the referee, then you're saying, hey, look at this, all the other stuff, ancillary, but look at this.

24:16You are now pointing the finger at this particular play, and then you are ignoring all the other stuff that's going on. That's the one part that I have an issue with.

24:24Dan Thomas:Do we know anything about how it was presented to the referee, Jules?

24:29Julien Laurens:Yeah, okay, so it went to the screen. so basically that clip that we showed it's only the first minute or so the whole clip I think is 4 minutes and 30 seconds because that's how long it lasted on the day once the referee is at the screen they clearly tell him so this is the final Raya from Pablo but look up before that there's Trossard on Pablo however the angle that they showed him is not the best of angles where you see even way before Pablo gets into Raya you see Trossard kind of like preventing him from moving basically and there's probably a foul there. Then they said to the referee, look at Declan Rice now on Mavropanos behind Raya, which they also look at, and they decide that the foul on Raya is first before Rice fouls Mavropanos behind as well.

25:15Julien Laurens:So that takes precedent, the one on Raya. So I think they did look, and that's why I think it's obvious the Pablo foul on Raya, I think it doesn't take long to see and to decide. I think it took that long on the day because they looked at Rice on Mavropanos, Trossa on Pablo, maybe not the right angle, by the way, but still, they looked at that. And that's why, in the end, they decided that either the first foul or the precedent or the biggest one was the one on Raya. But they did look at everything else. And then after the clip, Howard Webb, our friend, obviously, the PGMO leader or supremo or president, whatever he is, director, I don't even know, but he's going to call me tomorrow.

25:56Julien Laurens:He's going to call me tomorrow to complain. We clearly asked about Michael Owen, so? And he said, well, you know, and he basically re-explained everything that we see on the clip.

26:07Dan Thomas:Okay. Is that all right to you? Well, it's got to be now. None I can do at this point. No, there isn't. Obviously, a big decision now. How's your tone, Shaq? Okay. All right. Okay. Got to get some predictions from you guys. Okay. Because it is Man City against Crystal Palace coming up. Oh, look, everybody going for a Man City win. Where's Kate Murray? No, I didn't get called for this one. Oh, boy. Otherwise engaged. Shots fired. Make sure to join us tomorrow, Moria. She was otherwise engaged in concern. Yeah, and I have every right to meet today. 27:45Dan Thomas:okay fa cup final coming up chelsea against manchester city as we take a look at the odds for this game this weekend. And ahead of it, our very own Alex Aljo caught up with Andres Santos. What would it mean to the players and to you to win a trophy with Chelsea this season? Of course, it's a dream for, not only for me, but for everyone. We already win the world of clubs and some players win the conference league as well. And you know how it's important to win with Chelsea and in this moment we have to work hard because now we have one final soon in three days and of course we are ready to win.

28:31It hasn't been an easy season for Chelsea but if you were to win this trophy, beat Manchester City in the final would it salvage the season? Yeah, it's a difficult moment for us but how you say we have a final soon and this final is so important for us, for the club as well because we have to work hard, we have to win trophies when we talk about Chelsea. And looking at the quality in this squad, the level of the players, are you surprised with the way things have gone this season? Yeah, yeah, of course, because we know we have a lot of players with quality but the season in the Premier League was a little bit hard but you know we can do more maybe next season but the season is not finished yet we have the final we have two more games left in the Premier League and you have to work hard to arrive the more high possible And when the manager changes how do you players find it adapting to new coaching styles?

29:41Yeah, yeah. So we had a lot of change, but I think it's not about the coach, it's about us. We have to adapt quickly because, you know, when we talk about top players, we have to be our goal, you know. And now we are very happy with Cal and you have to work hard these three games left to win every single game.

30:11Dan Thomas:It's interesting, isn't it, Jules, listening to that interview, and you look at the season that Chelsea have had, that it still could end on quite the high.

30:20Julien Laurens:Yeah, that's right. It could be another season with a trophy. Let's not forget, they won the Club World Cup in the summer, they won the Conference League a few weeks before that. It will save the season, there's no doubt, because right now they're ninth in the table in the Premier League, that's where they might finish. And the FA Cup trophy, by the way, they lost their last three finals over there, The last three finals at Wembley in the FA Cup final were all defeats. So if they could finally end that curse, beating Manchester City as well, of all clubs, of all people in the final, to make it at least to the Europa League, that would not still be making a good season, but at least that would save what was a really poor season until then.

31:00Julien Laurens:It won't be easy. It's a big challenge. I don't think they're favourite at all. But at least if they can get that, there's a bit of momentum towards the following season. And given everything we've seen from Chelsea this season, to your point, K, it is amazing that we could finish at this point, that they beat Manchester City in an FA Cup final, as much as I don't see it happening. They have a puncher's chance. I can't help but think of the Champions League final five years ago where I probably gave Chelsea even less of a chance. Yet they won that one against Manchester City. And now they have an opportunity.

31:37given the absolute chaos that this season has been in every single regard, it gives them momentum to build on for next season. Now, they still have to go there and win a game against a very difficult opponent. Again, I don't see it happening, but kind of given how crazy the season has been, it's incredible to think that they're in a final. I wonder if, as a fan of Chelsea, people have the foresight to understand that winning this FA Cup may not be the best thing. Because it's masking a lot of the issues. You lean on that and consider that a successful season and show the trophy and say, look, we got a trophy.

32:21We won the FA Cup. and if that then keeps you from truly addressing the issues of this club then instead of taking a step forward you're taking a step backwards Chelsea has a lot of concerns in terms on the field issues a lot of concerns in terms of the personnel that is available a lot of concerns in terms of the coaching position a lot of concerns period and winning FA Cup is like oh we got concerns but here's a trophy so put those concerns to the side and if that's the way you run the club then you're running into trouble I and I know I know that most fans are like I don't care we'll win the darn thing and that and we'll worry about that later I'm simply suggesting be careful about masking your problems because if you do that then you may just find yourself in a Spurs sort of situation.

33:13Just mass problems, mass problems, mass problems and then you are struggling to stay in the league.

33:18Dan Thomas:Yeah, Alex just asked Andre Santos there about the coaching changes and one man that's been linked with Chelsea and the job in the future here is Xabi Alonso Jules. Have there been any developments on this story?

33:31Julien Laurens:They're going through the process of recruitment so they've spoken to a few of those names that you see on our list. We've had this list which has been the list that the club also had pretty much from the beginning. They've gone through the process of speaking to those managers to not fully interviewing them in the sense of like they've been charged and then some of them have presented already their project to the club and what they would do, like Chad B. Alonso, for example, who apparently was quite impressive to the hierarchy that interviewed him. But there's still more to come. Obviously, they're not going to make a decision anytime soon.

34:06Julien Laurens:I mean, it won't be long, but there's still plenty of time. and we're only like mid-May. But they're already getting through that process. It's the right thing to do with an Iraola, with a Glasner, with a Fabregas, with a Chabialonso. Those are, I think, Felipe Luis, obviously, as well. Those are the main names. We've said from the beginning they want a young coach. They want a coach that will change the mentality and the DNA almost of this team because you almost need a reset. Again, things have been so bad since the American owners arrived that you need somebody who's going to do a bit like what Mikel Arteta has done at Chelsea or what Wilson Miquel has done at PSG.

34:44Julien Laurens:Arrive and change the mentality of that football club to go from a fresh start and to start building and whether that takes one year, two years, three, four, five, six, it doesn't matter really so much. But you need a massive, massive reshuffle in what you've been doing in the last two or three years.

34:59Dan Thomas:Xabi Alonso as a fit at Chelsea, how do you see that? Well, I see it as a really good fit for Chelsea. I don't see it as a great fit for Xavi Alonso. It's a really good fit for Chelsea if you draw parallels to what Xavi Alonso did when he first went to Bayern Leverkusen. Let's not forget that when he first went to Bayern Leverkusen, that's a team that was struggling with relegation. They were in the conversation. And so it was a team that had issues, again, with player personnel, lack of talent. They didn't have an identity. They didn't know what the direction was going to be. He comes in as a new manager, and with young players that were willing to listen, and young players that were willing to try some of the things that Xavi Adonso was trying to implement on the field, they both grew up together, both Xavi Adonso as a manager, and the players grew up with him as well.

35:53That is something that could potentially happen at Chelsea. There is, if you want to look for parallels, if you want to look for reasons as to why this would make sense, yeah, you can draw some of those lines between Leverkusen and Chelsea. But if you're Xavi Alonso, you yourself, you're in a different place now than what you were then. You don't need this project. You don't want this project. You want something else entirely.

36:18Dan Thomas:Yes, well, we will see how that all plays out. But don't miss the FA Cup final between Chelsea and Manchester City. Our team will be on the ground in London at Wembley once again. Saturday 10 a.m. Eastern is kickoff. Our coverage will begin earlier than that though at 9 ESPN2 and ESPN Plus will have you covered. It's Charles Barkley here with Wayfair. 37:37Brought to you by Argenics.

37:41Dan Thomas:Second leg of the playoff semifinal between Southampton and Middlesbrough went the way of Southampton in extra time. Burr scored first through Riley McGree. Just before that, they were denied a penalty for a Matsuki kick on Strelitz. But Southampton hit back before the first half was through. It was Ross Stewart who rose high to head in and make it 1-1. Second half, there was a handball that wasn't given. Referee deemed it to be the shoulder rather than the hand. That went against Borough, but Southampton definitely looked stronger towards the end of regular time. And they would score in extra time to seal the deal and to seal a place in the playoff final.

38:20Dan Thomas:However, they are still under investigation after being charged for breaching Rule 127 for spying on an opponent. The club, however, have asked for more time to complete an internal review. Because of this whole Spygate situation, they want more time to present their case. It's a case that they have been charged in so far. What's the latest here?

38:47Julien Laurens:I don't think this is the end of this Spigate story at all all Middlesbrough fans will be happy because I think there might be more twists to come Southampton and as you said, there will be more time to present their case, it's not so much the time that they need because we know that the EFL are already looking into it we know there's also an independent commission that we look into it, basically what the EFL want is a decision to be made before this playoff final at Wembley in 10 days time, let's say, roughly. And if we have a decision before that, and Middlesbrough definitely want a sporting decision, not just a financial decision.

39:26Julien Laurens:Remember when this happened to Leeds United under Bielsa before the game against Derby County, they got fined£200 ,000 for spying on the Derby County training. £200 ,000 when you're about potentially to get promoted to the Premier League and get a check of 100 odd million, it's nothing. There's no point doing even that. So Middlesbrough are pushing towards the EFL and we know that Steve Gibson, their owner, is a very powerful man that has a voice that counts for a sporting sanction. What will a sporting sanction be? I think for Middlesbrough is very simple. They say that Southampton forfeit, Middlesbrough take their place in that playoff final and they play against Hull City because they argue that Southampton spying on their training before the first leg of this playoff semifinal was just against the rules that the EFL have brought in since the Leeds-Darby County incident that we had a few years ago.

40:19Dan Thomas:Yeah, it's a very interesting situation right now. Middlesbrough have said they're going to continue to train, according to reports, just in case something is to go their way. But obviously it's an interesting situation because there's a whole host of punishment. Joel's obviously laid some of them out. What are you looking at for something like this? Because it's a difficult situation too, Shaka. It really is. And listen, Southampton have made full use of the loopholes and the regulations in terms of these infringements and how they are adjudicated. They've made the most of it, which I guess in this circumstance or in any circumstance they're more than entitled to.

40:54But whatever comes, unless it really is Southampton not participating in that playoff final, which personally I don't see happening. I think given that we've had 180 minutes of football, Southampton will play in that playoff final. But whatever comes, if that's the case, is of no help, no consolation to Middlesbrough. Who were the infringed party here or infringed upon in this circumstance? So I find this, and again, so I spoke about this early in the week, a couple of years ago in the Olympics, there was a spying situation, head coach suspended from, I think, the tournament at that point. So there is precedence.

41:38What I think the Football League failed in here is addressing this as quickly and as decisively as was needed. Because you know these two games are coming, unless you're just saying, Millisburgh goes straight to the final. You know these two games are coming. Something had to be done beforehand. A firm finding, whatever that may be. I told you what my thoughts are on that. by allowing Southampton to kick the can down the road does not serve the best interest of football as it should. Yeah, well... Never mind what our opinion is on this, Shaq. And while that was very well put, you had me convinced.

42:20I was thinking through everything that you were saying, what does the Middlesbrough fan think?

42:25Dan Thomas:The Middlesbrough fans, obviously, you know what they think. No, no, you. What do you think? One specific... One specific fan, you. I just don't like, because we don't know how far back this spying would go. This has been a very long, unbeaten run. Would they have even been in the position they were to be in the playoffs without this alleged spy? That's my question. Have there been other games that this alleged spy wasn't caught at, other training sessions? So should, in your mind, Middlesbrough go through to the final instead of... Well, of course. All right, we got there in the end. But I don't think it's going to happen.

43:05Dan Thomas:Anyway, we won't preview the final just yet. We don't know what's going to happen with this whole situation. But on extra time. We kind of do. These guys will be answering your questions. Jules is staying up late for us as well. Make sure to check it out over on our YouTube channel.

43:22Dan Thomas:Okay, Gio Reyna on whether he should make the U.S. World Cup squad. He said, no spot is guaranteed or safe. but yes, I want to be there. It's a World Cup in your home country. You think about it often, but I try not to let it sort of take over my day and stress me out too much, but it is in the back of my mind, like I'm sure with many other players. If I say no, I'm not backing myself. And if I say yes, it's the arrogant answer where I feel like I should be there. It's a hard question to answer. All right, what's your reaction to this? I'm going to get your word in a minute, Shaq, because I know you've been talking about it on Football America's Gio Reyna.

43:59Dan Thomas:What do you think about what he's had to say here, Ale? Now, I'm saying this on the back of Giorreina having scored this past weekend, actually, for Mucing Gladbach. He hasn't done enough talking on the field. His performances haven't, whenever he's actually been on the field, which hasn't happened all that often, but his performances haven't really made a case for him being at the World Cup. Now, having said all that, I think that he should be part of this national team because I think Dio Reyna gives you something different, even if it is for a limited amount of minutes. In the attack, he has enough creativity where he can free up Christian Pulisic, where he can free up Balogun.

44:55Getting the best version of Gio Reyna has been a question for years now. Getting consistency from Gio Reyna has been a question for years. For him to stay fit has also been a problem. So when he's asked the question whether he should be or shouldn't be, it's not for him to answer. In that I agree with him. But he, his talking, he can do it on the field and he hasn't done enough of that. There shouldn't be a question as to whether Gio Reyna should be in this national team or not. It should be one of those players that for sure you think he should be in the plans of Pochettino. No question about it.

45:30He must be in the plans for Pochettino. The fact that we're having this conversation tells you that on the field, he hasn't done enough just yet. I agree fully with Ali and everything he just said. If we are going on Gio Reyna as we know the player, he can be, or certainly promised to be for some time. he's in the squad no no debate about it but he's also right to point out that it's what you do on the field that matters and mauricio pochettino has spent the last 18 months telling anybody who would listen that he is trying to change a culture around this u.s men's national team and it is what you do on the field that matters that is the only thing that matters while i accept that mauricio Pochettino will not be US Men's National Team coach come August.

46:16So as far as he's concerned, he's done his bit. Nobody gets to question the inclusion of G Arena if that's what he decides to do in terms of how it contradicts everything he said before. So he may move on and he may just take that chance. But I'm going to go on Mauricio Pochettino's word and him saying that everything about this team it's about earning your right to be here to your arena quite simply and I'm sure he'll admit as much has not done enough to earn that spot Yeah

46:48Dan Thomas:we'll see Gladbach against Hoffenheim coming up next in the Bundesliga whole slate of action on the way for you on Saturday including Bayern Munich against Köln we will have coverage of the Bundesliga coming up for you as there are still some decisions to be made Oh There you go Shaka on Football America is talking about Gio Reyna and more. Why is your jacket hanging off the chair? It was casual. It was casual Monday. Okay, all right. So you just wanted to let people know that you had the jacket, but you chose not to wear it. That's right. I chose not to wear it. Ouswan Dembele, League and Player of the Year, starting just nine games in the league.

47:28Dan Thomas:It's another season that he has won this award. Is that okay with you, Jules?

47:36Julien Laurens:I mean, anything that involves with Mandele is okay with me obviously and PSG as you know oh boy I can understand that nine starts although he played 29 games as we saw out of 33 so far so it's not you know, it's not that bad either but I can understand why you could look at that from the outside and think like really? can you be crown player of the season in a league where you've only started nine of those 33 games. I completely get it. However, when he has played, and I know it's not many minutes in the league, but when he has played, it's been outstanding. Let's not forget that he's been injured quite a few times or he had niggles, that he was not fully fit, not 100%, which explains a bit the minutes and the game time.

48:22Julien Laurens:But yeah, in a season that has been really exciting in Ligue 1 where there's still a lot to play for within just one game week left on Sunday for European places and relegation, for example, and even for the title to a certain extent, I think it's a shame that people have not recognised his award and few awards like they should have been.

48:44Dan Thomas:What about if those nine starts were so spectacular? He scored four goals each start. What if he scored four goals each start? Exactly. He's playing 48. He's averaging 48 minutes a game as well. It's not like he's out there grinding all 90 minutes. I suppose you can be very efficient and effective, very economical with the way that you put your minutes out there. But, man, give me somebody from lawns. Give me somebody. If you can't pick a player out of PSG because they've all been so good and there's been so much rotation and this, that, and the other, then find somebody from lawns. I'm just saying.

49:21Let me also just add. Lowns. Whenever anybody questions my time off from no one, I want Jews to be my lawn. Yes. Wow. I want Jews to come stick up for me. I love that stuff. You're very economical. Right. Yes.

49:37Dan Thomas:We don't want Don now. Don Hutchison was on the latest Gathering Hill show. You don't want Don for anything. It looks like Joel's had a better night's sleep than Don to be. What's going on with Don? Don't think he slept at all. Check it out. I'm ready to get your pods. Good Lord. Pod on. Man City play Crystal Palace tomorrow in the Premier League And our panel have all got Man City winning this game Which is not a good sign for City Yeah What about K Murray? I mean one thing What about K Murray? What does K Murray think? Did not get asked Well I'm asking you right now Sounds a little bitter there K Yeah Which is if my team lost an important game today Anyway that's all we've got time for Ali and Stevie will talk to us Score!

50:22Dan Thomas:We have no time left Man City win Yay!

50:28Dan Thomas:Welcome into the latest edition of Extra Time. Shakur and Ale are here in the studio and Jules is joining us as well. But first question tonight is from Sid Lowe. You've just spent some time with him, Barcelona, Ale. Yes, yes. And he said, on a scale of 1 to 10, how mad was that press conference, Florentino Perez, and why is it 11? I mean, a hundred, a thousand, a million. You cannot put a number on it. Now, I don't know if we were able to physically tell the world how crazy this press conference was. But can I use your paper? Sure. A few of my objects actually earlier to do this. Yes. So he comes in and he has this.

51:12It's a packet of paper, right? Okay. and obviously notes of things that he wants to share with the world that the world doesn't need to know, but he wanted to share with the world. And he starts going forward, forward, and then backwards. Let me look another. Let me see this piece of paper here. No, this one is not here. I'm not kidding when I say that he's over here while he's talking, and he's talking about I have to, I'm going to give up the subscription of this newspaper that my father got me that subscription almost 40 years ago. But let me tell you, I'm going to tell you something here. all the titles um let me talk to you about the basketball titles and i'm thinking somebody help this man he's over here drowning and he thinks he is dictating how the press conference is going and the truth is that the press conference was out of control from the moment he sat in front of the microphone it was crazy jules i mean it was it's not often we see

52:07Dan Thomas:florentino perez have to call a press conference and addressing the media in this way and then for it to be this it was quite shocking wasn't it yeah i thought it was a disaster class completely

52:18Julien Laurens:i mean i don't think we will ever we see him for a long time doing something um similar it's it reminds us of some politicians you know who sometimes lose it completely when they are in front of the media and that's exactly what happened he the wrong messages even some of the things he said like when he's uh when he talked about we didn't say that on the show i forgot but But there's a line about his, you know, he has his construction company that has been really successful in Spain. He's one of the richest men in Spain anywhere. But he said, my construction company this year turned over billions and billions and billions of years.

52:53Julien Laurens:I was like, OK, right. Yeah, sure. I'm sure. I'm sure. So just making up stuff as well as sending the wrong message about his own club.

53:01Dan Thomas:All right. I won't make you wade in on this one, Shaka. Jules, you've worked for US, French and UK media and are very familiar with how other countries like Spain and Italy operate which country's media do you think is the harshest with players?

53:19Julien Laurens:Wow, what a great question this is

53:25Julien Laurens:harshest, I don't know I mean the tabloids in the UK Chaka knows too well are obviously very hard They used to be probably even harder on the players than they are now for different reasons, which you don't really have so much in other countries. Maybe that kind of tabloid culture that is still very strong in England, for example. But if you look at the players' ratings in France from L 'Equipe newspaper, for example, this is proper ratings, not just a bit like in other countries where you put a 5 out of 10 or 6 when you're not really sure. in the keep they take it very seriously and sometimes it's painful reading if you're the player obviously in Italy I think there's so much focus on football and so many newspapers and radio channels 24-7 TV channels everything that makes I think that quite difficult environment for some players and Spain is quite similar to Italy in the US I think apart from us I'm not I really listen or watch the other thing on soccer.

54:30Julien Laurens:But I think we're pretty good. I think we are the best. We are very excellent, you know. So I would say probably the tabloid culture as you know, Kay, as well, is probably I think if you were a player, the things that you're not really looking forward to experience. Can I also add maybe there's a limit on how many words you can use here, but you can say, Jules, you've worked for and list every country on the planet. You can list every... I was in Qatar with Jules, and it was a sight to behold.

55:01Dan Thomas:Was he like Florentino with the paper? Oh, yeah, yeah. Can I tell you? Let me tell you. My construction company is worth$50 billion. Honestly. My subscription, I'm going to... Jules was... I'm going to... Yeah, my subscription. Jules was working it. He's a man in demand. Can I... And it's not listed among those, nor the ones that Jules works for, But the Mexican media is extremely critical of their players and their federation and their teams. And where I find an issue is that it's not commensurate with what that national team has achieved in the world stage. They have been a, I suppose, a serviceable team in the World Cup.

55:48it's a team that will add some flavor and spice to the competition but they're not expected to be anything other than maybe get out of the group maybe they'll win that next game maybe they won't and that's it and yet the expectations of their own media about their own players and about their own teams is that they should be competing with Spain and Germany and Brazil and this and that and France and the other And so it feels like the criticism of the Mexican media, which happens around the clock. If you watch our company, ESPN in Mexico, they're having show after show after show just talking about football all the time.

56:33And a lot of it is from a negative point of view. And I always watch it thinking, this guy that you're criticizing, he's not that good anyway. So, your expectations for him have to come down so that then we can have a real conversation as to what the real ceiling of this player individually is as well as what the ceiling of this national team is. Once we get to that level, then we can have a reasonable conversation. Everything else is unreasonable.

57:02Dan Thomas:Jules has also worked for Deportes. Oh, well then. I'm telling you, every country on the planet. Everybody. Faraleh, are you surprised that Carabajal was left off the Spanish team for the World Cup? No. He hasn't been playing under Arbeloa, and that has been well documented, and the relationship or lack thereof between him and the manager. But even when he has had chances to play, he just hasn't looked all that good. He's looked to me a step slow. He's looked to me as a guy who's still recovering from what was a terrible knee injury. And terrible knee injuries are terrible at any age, But especially when you are older as a player, it takes more time for you to be able to try to get back to something close to your best.

57:50And even his best right now, I don't think has been good enough to fully compete this season. And so therefore, I think it's the only decision that Luis de la Fuente had.

58:00Dan Thomas:Xhaka, how essential is a sports psychologist to a squad? Does it have a significant impact on results or player welfare? Short answer to that is, I don't know. I preceded all that back when I was playing sports psychology was not a thing If you were to manage now, would you bring in a sports psychologist? Absolutely yes, absolutely yes because while I can jokingly dismiss sports psychologists or certainly the impact as I know it I also understand the pressures that a lot of players are under and we've also spoken time and time again over the last few years about players who that pressure has taken a psychological and a physical tool.

58:41So if you're trying to get the best out of a player, you need to have at least that psychologist available for those who need it. Some may not. That is totally fine too. But if I were managing a team, absolutely I should have a sports psychologist. You also need somebody who the players can drain all their nonsense. Players have all sorts of thoughts about how this should happen, that should happen, this is happening, why isn't this happening? just go and dump it on somebody. That used to be the assistant coach or the fitness guy. You would talk to the fitness guy. You get him in a corner and say, tell him all sorts of different things about the team.

59:19You need sort of an independent source that you can go and spew everything that you need to spew and get it off your system so that then whenever you go to train, you're not carrying that with you. I didn't think that that was important when I was a player, but in looking back maybe there are certain things that I held on to Shaq that maybe I didn't need to You have a habit of holding on to things I've noticed Ali Well, apparently, allegedly That and your tone The tone seems to be a problem Not too late

59:52Dan Thomas:Last question With the EFL's worst case scenario now happening and Southampton advancing should they be removed from the playoffs and replaced by Middlesbrough if the league finds Southampton were spying on opponents. Only one person should answer that question. I just feel that it's unfair on the players for Southampton, though. Because I'm sure they knew nothing about it. And so that would feel really harsh, even as a middle spied. They did know when they watched the tape of what was spied upon. This is what I want you to do from this corner. Do this. Trust me. I have it on. Wink, wink. Trust me, I do.

1:00:34I have a good account that this is what they want to do.

1:00:39Dan Thomas:Boy. I can't make you guys answer this. This is a tough one, right? There's a lot of punishments it could be. Well, the one thing I've learned today is Kay watching Millers Brothers are a whole lot better than Stevie watching Liverpool. At least we can say that now. Because I was concerned, I'm not going to lie. Her pain is in silence. Yeah, yeah. Nothing happens. It's just hands go up and then they quickly come down. But what we do know as well is that while she's watching and she's in pain and she's stressed, she doesn't answer the calls of the producer. Yes. The producer had to call me so that we can get a hold of Kay who was next to us.

1:01:17Dan Thomas:I do present the show live, though, as it's going on in the background in my pain. He was three feet away from you. Yes. I have presented a playoff final that Middlesbrough lost before and sat through the pain. No, you're a professional. I know I'm a professional. I'm a Middlesbrough fan. We're used to disappointment. I'm already mentioned alright thank you so much for sending in your questions especially that one from Ezio and you can catch Jules in what TV station Uzbekistan Jules is off the new Uzbekistan you know what he always answers our call
