0:10Welcome to a very special edition of Football W. She is two-time World Cup champion and also last time you saw Gotham lift an NWSL title. She was still on the team. Ali Krieger. It wasn't too long ago, Ali. We don't need you now. We don't need you anymore. We're back. We're back. You're here. You're here. I'm ready to go. So we've hung out all day here on Media Day. We have great conversations coming up. We also have an exclusive with Commissioner Jessica Berman. So very much looking forward to that because we know the narrative surrounding Trinity Rodman's future in the league. We will, of course, answer those questions.

0:46But let's take it now to Washington spirit. But with what we're expecting here coming up this weekend, Ali, it's been a really exciting day so far.

0:57Cristina Alexander:This has been awesome. It's been really exciting to get the insight of every team and to hear what they have to say and how excited they are about the final and how prepared they are to play this match. And this is everything you work for the entire season to get to the final. It's so rewarding to be here. No matter what happens, I know both teams and all the players are super proud, But it was really great to hear Esme and to hear her view on what they've learned from the final last year and how they can apply just having more success and all those tools that they've learned this year to now be successful and win.

1:38Cristina Alexander:And it's going to be a great matchup because it's a rivalry that we love to see. Gotham obviously got the upper hand this season during the regular season. But now it's just it's going to be exciting because Gotham has had a tremendous run in the playoffs and have only conceded one goal. They beat the Shield winners and then the rating champions. And they just, you know, seem to have that fire underneath of them to want to win. So it will be two teams who are championship caliber teams in this final. So I'm very excited for the matchup. I can't wait to see it. And it's all going to unfold brilliantly.

2:15Yeah, this all began in March, so very much looking forward to what these two teams will do. But we're going to shift our focus to Washington Spirit and what we've seen, of course, from their standouts, Trinity Rodman and Croy Bethune. So, Washington, back in this NWSL Championship game, making it their fourth trip to the title game. Spirit eliminated Louisville in the quarterfinal and had a shutout 2-0 win against Portland in the semifinal. They've dealt with two different coaches, but they're here now.

2:49We are in great company here, NWSL Media Day with Washington Spirits, Croy Bethune and Trinity Rodman. How's it going, guys? Having a good time? Doing great. We're good. Listen, when I saw that we were going to talk to both of you together, I mean, the chemistry that we see on field, obviously the social media chemistry that we see is just always on all levels good so let's start with with the energy that we see and that chemistry that we see on the field from both of you great I'll start with you both of you seem to just have fun when both of you are on the field describe what that's like for you it's a lot of fun as you can see this this goofy child here but

3:35Cristina Alexander:No, if you're not having fun, then why are you doing it? And to have this one to play with, it's even more fun. It was? Okay. It's so fun. Fun, capital M.O. Yay, fun. No, I have a TikTok buddy now. Super excited about that. We have a lot of TikToks lined up for this weekend. And, yeah, like Carole said, it's so much more enjoyable when, like, you're doing your thing and you're having fun off the field, which we do a lot of, and we probably annoy our teammates, honestly, during activation and stuff, but it's not part of it, though. Yeah. They love us. Yeah. You said the past two matches that this is probably the best football that Washington has been playing.

4:18Cristina Alexander:What has seemed to click for you and the squad? I feel like a little bit of a sense of urgency. We're getting to the end, so it's crunch time, but throughout the whole season I feel like we've played pretty well, good, but it can be better, And I feel like throughout the past two games, we've kind of just hit that rhythm and we're in flow. And with that flow, Croy, I mean, I told you right before we came on air, that goal, what was that like? What was going through your head? The run that you had to make, the one-on-one that you still had to beat, what did that goal mean for you in your short career?

4:53And that's been so impressive so far. Yeah, I mean, that goal meant a lot for me. Just it's the first in the playoffs and kind of like lacking goals. So to get that under my belt felt good.

5:04Cristina Alexander:But just blasting in the back of the net was the energy that we needed to close off the game and lead into this championship. And Trin, obviously, you know, this is the last match before hitting the free agency. And you're probably sick of answering this question. But how do you balance actually just staying present and focus on this final and not really thinking ahead to what's next for you? I think it honestly was a struggle in the beginning. but the more you think about what's next the more you get lost in like what you're doing so I think for me the more that's on my mind the the less fun I'm having and the more overwhelmed I am so I think yeah just like keeping my head down having such an amazing team around me and then obviously being in the finals is enough to think about right now and and then once this is over hopefully we'll be able to celebrate sorry um and then we'll have decisions to make later i played for the spirit too so that's true that's true another krieger derby here yeah um but trend physically i mean that's that's something else that you've had to kind of keep your mind on that mcl sprain we were obviously all just clutching our hearts when we saw you in that game against Monterey but how are you doing how has that recovery process been like we have seen a few minutes from you here for playoffs yeah it's you know injuries are just a roller coaster in general I've learned that um so like being able to kind of embrace that and be okay with like the emotional days and the hard days but also I'm just like extremely grateful um because like you said like it could have been way worse and it can always be worse so being grateful to just be able to get those minutes last weekend and then hopefully be able to see the field again this weekend for the final so you're you're both entering into your fashion eras as we see how would you describe each other's style heading into the championship week okay just in general how would you describe the style in general I think your style is any word I use is boring like bold creative funky fresh like tailored to you yeah unique unique I was gonna say you're unique creative just because like you put a spin and make your own little clothes which is very couples therapy right now and how do you we can't say the same thing I was gonna say bold just because like you like a lot of colors like I don't think I've seen you in just a black and white outfit which is different I like thank you you're welcome Awesome.

7:58Cristina Alexander:Thanks, guys. Switching back. Yeah, that was nice. That was neat. No, but it's also just like fashion is, I don't know, it just is, I guess you can just express your personality. And it's nice to not always have to think about football all the time. And you get to just be yourself and show up as you. And like you said, when you have fun, you play better. But, Trin, you played a massive finals before. So what message do you have to some of your, you know, maybe younger, less experienced teammates who have been in that same position? I don't know. The less experienced players seem more experienced than me these days.

8:32I don't know. I think just like not taking anything for granted. I think no matter the result, it's such a fun and cool experience. And we should just always take advantage of every opportunity because you never know when the last final you're going to see is. And hopefully there's a lot more to come. But yeah. Yeah, but we know that a lot has to happen for a team to get to a final, to be able to have these conversations before a final. So when it comes to preparing that and obviously the locker room environment, Croy, how has that been like too? Unfortunately, because we couldn't see you last year for the playoffs, and what's been now your first playoffs, how has that locker room been for you specifically?

9:14Yeah, I mean, in the locker room we have a lot of fun. It's kind of like a pre-party before the actual party on the field. But, I mean, this team has gone through a lot over this year or the past two years, a lot of changes, a lot of things behind the scenes. But I feel like we've overcome that adversity very well and not just trying to focus on the soccer piece but enjoying each other off the field and correlating it back to the field. Trin, what's that locker room been for you? Yeah, just amazing. Honestly, like this year we've grown so much closer and it's not just like us saying it for the media.

9:53Like genuinely, like it's not like we do anything for each other. It's like genuine like friendships and sisterhood. And even me and Kroy were talking about it the other day, like how much our relationship has grown. Like we didn't even really talk that much last week. And now just like truly getting to understand each other as people, like you figure out like the similarities and just being able to, I don't know, have a connection and grow together as people and as players.

10:19Cristina Alexander:I think that's what helps you fight on the field more right you're like I got your back because I know more about you and I understand you off the field and I saw that yesterday too like the entire team showed up to support you know each other at the award show and that was just yeah it was really incredible to see like that I really believe it you know cuz you're putting it into action but the most important question of the interview I'm asking for a 41 year old friend how do you what is your advice for my friend to go viral on TikTok like what would you say that you know this person has to do to like I don't know be themselves I mean as long as you're being yourself someone's gonna love it someone might not love it but as long as you love it that's what matters maybe hit the trends that are going viral yeah

11:18Cristina Alexander:I mean I we try less on are the ones that go viral the ones you actually put time into get like three views and you're like yeah we need more like should I delete that

11:36they got it okay yeah we might we might pull out one or two I always have so many planned and they just never come to fruition. Staying on trend too, I wanted to do a Jersey Shore one, so we'll see how that works out too. Yeah, perfect. Perfect. Well, thank you both so much for your time. We wish you all the best in the final. I can say I truly need that, Allie. A little less than me, okay? No, no, no. Very much looking forward to seeing you guys on the field. Thank you. Thank you. All right, let's take it to some stats here with Rodman and Bethune some team ranks it's no wonder that they've been a standout too with goals assists chances created and of course shots and that lethal one that we saw from Corey Bethune here in this semi-final.

All right, let's take it to the other team, too. No, let's call it the other team. Let's take it to Gotham FC now.

14:09Jaden Shaw and Mitch Purse have, of course, been the standouts. And Jaden Shaw, this last-stitch effort. Mitch Purse here with the decoy coming in to win it in the last-stitch effort. I can hear them chuckling already. but Gotham is looking to win their second title in three years, proudly wearing the underdog title, as Jaden Shaw loves that. We just keep reminding her about that. I talk about them freely because they are right here with us. Mitch first, Jaden Shaw, thank you so much for hanging out with us. I think we need to start paying you, Jaden, for your appearances here on VFALW. Yeah, what has it been, three in the last week and a half?

14:49But you just keep showing up for this team, So it's definitely for a great reason. So happy to have you both here on Football W. Jaden, let's start with that moment. How are you feeling? Have all of you recovered from screaming? I know I haven't from calling that cold, but what went through your head when you saw that goal hit the back of the net? I couldn't believe it. Like, I mean, I could believe it, but I think in the moment I was just, like, so in shock. It was so late in the game. like I felt kind of far out and yeah I was just so happy I think like looking back on just like the week leading up I knew I had prepared myself for that moment and just like working with the staff making sure that I was like ready to step up for the team in that moment and yeah I mean thank you Mitch for being the decoy I mean you would have scored it anyways you got your toe on Thank you.

15:46It was phantom touch, I say. Yeah. Yep. Yeah.

15:49Cristina Alexander:It was like a look good, feel good play moment. Oh, yeah. Like the hair was on point. Yeah. The hair is something to talk about. Jaden's laughing because this has been a topic of conversation for the last three days. I'm really irritated. And I was really upset with one of my teammates, Kayla. I'm going to call you out. I'm going to call you out. Tell us more. Because I had no pictures to post from the celebration. And would you like to know why? Because during the dog pile, Kayla, she brushes my head. As she comes in. That looks crazy. It looks crazy. And it pushed my hair up. And all my pictures ruined.

16:22So the hair is sensitive right now. But I've talked to her. We have rehearsed how to do a proper dog pile, proper celebration. It won't happen again.

16:30Cristina Alexander:So you have time for this weekend. She has time. I believe in her. And I think she's resilient. And I think she'll recover. And we'll move on. You live and you learn. Absolutely. Well, both of you have stepped up in clutch situations this season. And I think resiliency for me comes to mind. What does that mean inside this Gotham locker room, having that resiliency, fighting through that adversity to get to the point where you are now? Yeah, I mean, I think, yeah, just like since I've been here, I think the first thing that I noticed was just how gritty this team is, how much we fight for each other, how much, you know, we do that last ditch tackle for each other.

17:07we do you know sliding in for a goal I think is just something that's so evident in this team and yeah it's it's so like what is the word like contagious and it's it bleeds off onto me it makes me want to work even harder and I think that's ultimately what's getting us through these games especially in those late moments yeah I think one of the intangible things of any championship team and you know this well Allie you know it well it's that mentality piece and that's something we're not lacking at any line in our formation. Like every single person has that winning mentality. And part of that is knowing that even when things don't look how they're supposed to be, we can fix it and we can come back from it.

17:49So I think resilience is the perfect answer. It's a perfect word to describe this team because it takes you pretty far. Yeah. I mean, when it rains, it pours, it seems. And that's how it kind of seemed against North Carolina. But this team was able to turn around so quick go to KC against all odds number eight seed and Midge I want to get your perspective on this I mean was there a shift in belief what were those conversations like leading up to that match seconds before stepping onto that pitch what did you see Orlando or KC KC no I don't think there was a shift in belief at any point I was just talking to someone and they asked if the mindset was similar to when we won the championship in 2023 and I said absolutely not that was a Cinderella story this we just didn't do what we needed to do to be where we were supposed to be and I think we all knew and were aware of how much talent and how much skill is on this team and where we should have ended in the table and we at the end of the day didn't accomplish that so walking into Kansas City it was you know we know what we need to do, we need to execute.

18:52Yeah.

18:53Cristina Alexander:And I think both of you complement each other so well. How do you feel, Jada, we can start with you. How do you feel like just building that relationship with Midge on the field, and how does that make you a better player? Yeah, I mean, playing with Midge is so fun. She's like an incredible player. She plays with so much swag, so much confidence, and I feel like it bleeds off onto me and makes me want to take more risk. It makes me want to find her. We still working on that combo. We are. We don't get that combo. We don't get the headband bandits in that combo. However, yeah, it's been so fun, like, hanging out with her off the field and, you know, just, like, learning from her, having those conversations about, like, you know, what we're looking to do in this next game, whether that's, like, a celly or that's just, like, a literal, like, combination on the field.

19:43Yeah, it's been so fun, and it's only going to go up from here. Yeah, we're always talking on the side. I'm like, did you want me to do this? Did you want me to do that? And I think it's really fun because it's been such a short time, but we both see what we could produce on the field. And it's the same thing with Rose. You see all these relationships. It's been a short amount of time that I think all of us have been playing together. But I think it's so obvious and clear that Jaden's a generational talent. And I feel privileged to be able to even play with her. And it's so crazy to see the things that she sees.

20:11And I think I learned just as much from her as I try to give to my rookies and the younger players. So it's been absolutely phenomenal, and it's only the beginning of what we're going to see from her, especially on a team like this in a system that I think really suits her strengths. What does it mean to hear that, Jaden? I don't know. It's kind of crazy to hear from her. I think I look up to her so much, so it just means so much to hear that from her. We've got to get real through. We don't get emotional, really. No, this is not our conversation. We're like, it's a safe space. Yeah, it's a safe space.

20:49Yeah, I'm like, oh, my gosh, you're. Like, you feel like that about me. Are we done? No, I just think. It's so true.

21:00Cristina Alexander:Like, with mid, your advocacy work and just, like, off-field moments, you know, that you also thrive in that make you a better person and even better player. And you see that day in and day out. And I saw that in real time. And then for you, just like those on-field, you know, badass moments where you just come up big and you take it on your shoulders and you just get the job done. And I think that just is such a good compliment for, you know, two powerful, you know, fierce attacking players. And it's difficult as a defender to probably stop. We hope so. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The fancy footwork is just so good from both of you.

21:39We love the Techers. She's my passing partner. whenever they're like, get two. Ball between two. Ball between two. I'm like, where's Jaden? You're like, no new friends. No new friends. There was one time where, did I just go with someone else? She had an indiscretion in our relationship. I made a mistake. That's how I would call. Oh, okay. That's what they say when it's an indiscretion, don't they? But she recovered. She forgave me. Yeah, I am not as forgiving with my own relationship, Chris. But yes, we bounced back.

22:11Cristina Alexander:Is he going to be here? Of course Chris is going to be here. He's on the flight now. Great. The fam's here. I mean, going back to you, Jaden, and we were able to talk to you off camera, but in those meetings that we had before that game against Orlando, one of the things that you really said with Juan Carlos sitting next to you is that you just feel really free as a player here in Gotham. How have you seen your game shift with that freedom? them. Yeah, I mean, I think I'm playing with a lot more confidence. I think I'm able to do things that, you know, aren't as comfortable, that aren't as, I would say, like, simple.

22:51I'm able to take more risks. I think I, like, look over at the bench, like, thinking back on Orlando, I look back at the bench, and I'm just like, they just really kept me going. They're so encouraging, and I think for me, like, I just really feed off of them and their energy, and I mean, the girls as well. Like I said, like, the way that they play is, is so contagious and I feel like I just am naturally going to become a better player just being a part of this group and yeah I mean I'm just so grateful to be here and to have had the impact that I've had so far and I want to continue that moving forward.

23:23Cristina Alexander:And Miz you as a veteran player now and just having that experience and being in this position before being a part of a championship you know previous MVP championship of the championship game. What advice are you giving you know some of the younger players who may not have you know this experience of all that pressure that you feel when you arrive here? Yeah I think I just well you know no one said that yet. They felt a ton of pressure but I think one of the things I tell everyone is if you step on that field and you look around on Gotham you are surrounded by some of the best players in the world there's nothing to feel nervous about someone's gonna pick up what you drop and we expect the same thing so I think it's a really special team and special area where if you do feel nervous that's okay like even even when you're not your best you have the best around you and that's that should be really comforting and also imagine what the opponent thinks playing up against you how nervous they are that's how I would always settle my nerves I'll be like imagine how that forward feels coming up against me text me that text me that tomorrow Saturday morning group text I love that I mean just learning from veterans I'm sure you've learned from the younger players as well and I love to see just the energy here in the locker room we feel it with all this team coming in as well but let's get into the nitty gritty of it what's coming up here on Saturday Mitch I'll start with you because we know that this team is coming off that only shot on goal which was the shot on goal that you had to make, right, for that 1-0, that clinical finish against Orlando Pride.

25:02What is a team looking to shift to not only have to depend on that one moment? Yeah, I think, you know, we do a really good job at getting into the final third and building out of that back line. And if I'm not mistaken, we definitely had majority of that possession. But it's about, you know, just honestly, like you say, like a mentality shift of, you know, let's take that shot. Let's take that risk. I think we have a team of perfectionists. So sometimes we want to create the perfect scenario and perfect picture to score that goal. And, you know, we try to get it done. And I think we have what it takes and the mind chips that we need in order to take a couple more shots next game.

25:38Jaden? Yeah, I mean, I feel like I say this before every game, but like Mitch said, it's the mentality in both boxes. It's being clinical in both boxes. it's you know being um clinical in the attacking box like making sure that any opportunity that we do get in that box we're taking advantage of it we're putting in the back of the net and same in our defensive box just not putting in the back of the net but like getting it out making that tackle making that extra run to get back and help out um I think is going to be something that goes a long way for us like not only in this game but moving forward um but of course most importantly in this game.

26:13Well, we're really looking forward to it on Saturday. Thank you so much to both of you for taking the time to sit here. I know it's easy to talk to this one as well, Midge, with the lovely pass that you guys have together. So we're very much looking forward to it here on Saturday. We appreciate you both so much. Thank you. Coach Purse and Jaden Shaw here with us on Football W. Switching things back to Washington spirit with Hal Hirschfeld and Esme Morgan and this Washington side and how precise as Morgan has been with the club in passing accuracy leading in this statistic here with Washington's fourth trip to the NWSL championship looking to go well back-to-back finalists already but looking to change things a little bit different than what we saw last year in clinching the title this time.

29:14As for how Hirsch felt this is how she performed against Portland with the passes almost at 100 percent Duels 1-2 as well, 2-4 in two shots that she had in that semifinal match. How are Phil and Esme Morgan from Washington Spirit chatting with us now? Guys, it's so great to be able to talk to you here, just so close to the final. But let's talk about what your roles have been for this team. I mean, the defensive improvement has been massive for Washington Spirit. How has that communication shifted and been like for both of you? I honestly feel like it's just been like a testament to how well we've been working together throughout the season I mean we kind of had a rough start But I feel like just as the months have gone by we've been working together as a unit more so than just individuals And I feel like that really shows and how we've been defending and how we've been putting away results And we had a clean sheet last game.

30:07So it's been working Esme? Yeah, I think at the beginning of the year we were quite inconsistent and it felt in some games that every time the other team kind of counted on us. They were getting a goal, which was really frustrating. But we worked really hard and had a lot of honest conversations. And I feel like the biggest thing that improved was just our organization, communication, being more aggressive higher up the pitch, which then allowed those of us further back to be more aggressive too. And I feel like it's been a lot of fun to have games where we've been throwing ourselves in front of the ball, putting our bodies on the line to just do what it takes to keep it out of the net.

30:43Cristina Alexander:Esme, you brought your championship pedigree, obviously from the Euros and England but how do you approach this championship and in a specific way or is it any different? Just with a lot of excitement I feel like we've got so much confidence in the group right now and so much belief in our ability to first of all have got here and then second of all to be able to now go on and win it I think winning is such an addictive feeling and you just want to do it again and again and when I came back from the Euros I had such a passion to want to get to this championship and win it too so I feel like I've tried to convey that to the girls and we're just in such a place right now where we feel so free and fluid and excited for the game like if you watch us at training today you wouldn't know we're preparing for a championship because everyone's just having a laugh and being crazy while also being so focused and training at such a high level so we've got an amazing dynamic and it's a lot of fun right now.

31:38Cristina Alexander:And Hal you've obviously grown up in a military family so you've had to adapt um often uh how is that relatable to you know your football environment and yeah gosh i just feel like i mean pretty similar i mean coming in as a rookie but honestly it's just a huge testament to the team around me i feel like no matter what wherever you're coming from i mean as me even came from europe last year it's just like you come in and this place makes you feel like you're home you know and i feel like it's honestly a testament to them just being adaptable and like willing to learn and understand what's going on in a new league and a new environment and I feel like this year last year was my first year but this year it's like okay now I have an expectation of how things are going to be you can really take the reins and like make it your own and so we're super excited to be heading towards this game.

32:23Yeah we forget how short of a career how both of you have had because of what we've seen from this team and from both of you specifically on the field correct us if we're wrong but Washington's identity is high tempo vertical um how how has that been like for you to be able to attribute to that identity I mean similar to what Esme just said like winning the ball higher up the field I feel like that's kind of like in our blood it's in our DNA that's why we make games so competitive it's like like pressure cooker vibes you know like we don't let teams out and I feel like it's so exciting and it's honestly addictive because you're just It's like, ah, like you can taste like getting a goal from like the pressure that we put on people.

33:04And I love it personally as a six. Like I love winning balls in the air on the ground. So like it's fun for me. But I mean, definitely for the back line, too. I mean, as we went to ball and had a shot the other game, I was like, girl, where'd you come from?

33:18Cristina Alexander:We all have a good time and get up in there. So, I mean, it's been so fun. What specific challenges does Gotham pose that you've actually been preparing for this week? They have a lot of individuals who are incredibly talented. Obviously, you look across their forward line. Esther is someone who was competing for the Golden Boot throughout the season. She's someone, obviously, as a defender that I'm extremely aware of. Her movement's brilliant. She's technically very good, really intelligent player. But across the pitch, they've got a lot of talent. And so we know what their threats are going to be.

33:50We'll all do our sort of research on individuals. But as a collective, they don't change too much game to game. so we know stylistically what to expect from them. We've played them a lot this year. So, yeah, really excited. It's always a very tense and exciting test against them, so we'll be ready. Yeah, we're looking forward to that tension too, but when it comes to breaking that tension, where do you think Gotham's Achilles heel comes in? I feel like they, well, this is one of their strengths. They're super fluid in their movement. I like how you looked at Allie when you said that. This is one of their strengths.

34:26They're super dangerous. I'm not there anymore, okay?

34:30Cristina Alexander:My hometown team is also in the finals. Oh, you're so real. No, but they're super fluid and dynamic. But I honestly feel like that's sometimes how we look at teams. We're like, oh, you might feel a little comfortable and get out of position. Maybe we can expose you. Because we're very dangerous on the transition. I feel like that's one of our strengths. So I mean, that's something that we're kind of looking forward to. But other than that, I mean, that is one of their strengths. So we have to kind of extinguish that a little bit. and then maybe turn it around for our favor. How do you prepare mentally?

35:02Cristina Alexander:Because physically, obviously, you understand the game. You understand how to break the teams down. But mentally, because this is just such an exciting game, it's a final. This is what you've worked for your entire career to be in the NWSL final. What mental game does it pose as well for you? And what challenges does that bring? I think the difficult part is not approaching it too differently to how you would any other game I feel like all throughout these playoffs which obviously carry so much pressure because they're all win or go home we've just had such a belief and an excitement coming into the games that we're going to get through it no matter what we're going to fight together no matter what comes our way within the game and I think just carrying that same mentality knowing that we're prepared for any circumstance that arises I think that's the main thing and I think it's important to feed off the excitement we have we have so much positivity and energy within the group and that's going to take us a long way obviously if the other team feel nervous then if we just come out and sort of put our foot on their throat from minute one and suffocate them which is what we want to do to teams then it's going to be a really fun game for us to be a part of and I think we should embrace that.

36:13Hel what about you? Oh gosh I mean I think kind of similar to what Esme said we're a great team I think we just need to be confident in what we bring to the table we know what we're capable of and I honestly feel like there's still so much room for growth with this group and the fact that we're here at a final I feel like we just need to like stick to our guns and show them like who the Washington spirit is because I feel like we're a phenomenal team of course we need to respect the opponent but we also need to believe in what we bring to the table and what we're good at yeah and belief clearly has been a constant for this team as well with the unexpected coaching change At least that's what we kind of saw from the outside and having someone who very much knows his team as well.

36:51But it's still having to kind of mold to each other. Obviously, I'm talking about Adrian. Esme, what has his message been, especially heading into this championship game? I think just focusing on us and what we can do. I feel like as a team, we're so connected to one another. We're so bonded. We love spending time together so much. I go into training every day and I'm so excited to see the girls because we just have such a laugh and make so many silly memories. But I think that's something that he wants us to embrace, knowing that we are so connected and together as a team. And obviously that then translates to the pitch and reflects in our performances that we've had over the last couple of months.

37:29Because we've all been so on the same page and played with so much freedom and fluidity. So he just emphasizes that doing what we do well, sticking together, because that's what we've done to get us to this point. We're a real family and we want that to take us as far as it can.

37:45Cristina Alexander:Being in a final again, so it's almost back to back. What did you learn from last year's final that now you're going to apply to this final that could help you now succeed? I mean, I think personally, I've developed a lot in the last year. and a lot of that is because of my experience in the championship because I thought I don't want to feel that again. I felt so gutted after we lost and that really fuelled a fire inside me to be like I want to be better so I can help the team and not have that again. And I think a lot of people felt that too. So I think this year, although it's intangible, I feel like we're here with a lot more belief that we belong in this moment.

38:25It feels like we were meant to be here. A lot of us have been saying throughout the year like will be there at the championship so it's something that we had a lot of faith in and it's nice to have had that come into fruition and now we just want to take the final step and make sure we bring the championship home to dc how how do you feel about that what did you learn in the final last year that you know i just feel like we kind of let the moment get to us a little bit i mean similar to what you guys said i mean we're a young team and that was a lot of our first experiences in playoffs let alone like a final championship game for the league so i feel like this year We're definitely coming in more prepared.

39:00We weren't satisfied last year. I feel like this year it's like we want to get what's ours type of thing. Yeah, I can't wait to see how many Washington fans make the trip as well because Rowdy Audi needs to show up here. I know. I'm like, come on, guys. I know it's across the country, but come on. We're so excited to see you guys on the pitch on Saturday. Thank you so much for hanging out with us. Yeah, of course. Thank you. Thanks for having us. Good luck. Thank you. Thank you. So many great chats we're having today, but let's break it down here for Washington Spirit and their league ranks with goals with 45 total.

39:32Their second overall with wins as well with 13 and big chances created. 71st place here in the league rank and shots on goal as well. All right, speaking of Washington Spirit, let's take it to the best moments of the season. Ashley Hatch for number five. Allie, how about this long distance shot?

39:58Cristina Alexander:Yeah, brilliant turn. She gets it out in front of herself. Well done. Just a hit immediately, upper 90. Great finish. Goalkeeper has zero chance. Yeah, really doesn't. Just turns it around. Looking forward to having her back in the league as well. Let's take it to our number four with Sofia Cantore. What we've seen from her fancy footwork from the Italian Allie. Yeah, she's had a brilliant start to her NWSL career. I mean, this is a goal that is maybe once a season. I mean, she's been incredible in their attack. And obviously that goal tells that story. And so has Lacey Santos. There she knows how to take a free kick.

40:44Cristina Alexander:Yes, incredible. I think I was sitting there watching this live in Louisville. and that was unbelievable. Just perfect placement. Great pace. Yeah. Well done. Impressive stuff from Lacey Santos. Not done yet. Back to Sofia Cantore. We go. Facing Louisville in this one. The play was great. The shot was better. Yeah, this was one of our first games with the Washington Spirit. Obviously, no defenders in front of her. She has the time. She has the space. And she takes a chance. and beautifully hit. Obviously hits off the goalkeeper there, but goes in the back of the net. All right, let's see who our number one is.

41:29I mean, this is a pattern, right? Sofia Cantone as well. I mentioned the fancy footwork alley. I mean, I think this is the epitome of it.

41:36Cristina Alexander:Maybe I was wrong when I said this is a once-in-a-season type goal. She does it twice here, slips it into the back of the net. Unexpected for Morehouse. Well done by her. She's having an excellent start. All right, we also have a top five for Gotham FC, Jalen Howell from outside the box, Allie. Well done. The way she takes this under pressure, just gets it out in front of her, hits it across her body, across the face of the gold side netting. Amazing. Well done. Yeah, just put some power behind that, getting things started here for us. Let's take it to number four with Rose Lavelle. And another free kick for her, Ali.

42:22Cristina Alexander:Yeah, another brilliant set piece. She does this so well. Left-footed, bends it around the wall, side netting. Great win for Gotham. Barely takes a step to take that one as well for our number four. On to our number three. Hey, look who it is again. Jalen Howell for our number three. The highlight reel for Jalen Howell here. This was unbelievable. Just first time, right? She just doesn't even think about it, sees the goal. I mean, the pace of that and the precision, the technical ability it takes, unbelievable. The celebration is so good, too. Let's take it to our number two with this moment from Katie Stengel.

43:09A little back heel from Rose Lavelle. Okay, Rose, we see you.

43:13Cristina Alexander:Katie Stengel found herself again in the same position against Kansas City. I think she loves this area of the box. Well done with that low goal, side netting, pace of that. Goalkeeper couldn't get her hand on it and got them the win. Nope, she could not. Our number one. Oh, look who it is again. Jalen Howell pacing Orlando in this one. Would it be from outside the box? Yes. Yes, it would, Allie. It's very similar to the very first goal we saw Jalen hit. But this position is really difficult to keep this ball low, especially off of volley. She does it so well with her technical ability. Brilliant goal.

43:57All right. A couple of top fives there. And if we're not used to seeing her yet, we're going to see her again. Jalen Howell, Sarah Schubansky for Gotham FC. Thank you so much for taking the time with us. We know it's been a packed schedule for you both. But Jalen, I just want to get your reaction on you being so popular in our top five. Yeah, I mean, this was the first year I've scored an NWSL goal. So I thought, why not three more? And I guess in the top five. So yeah, we have great goal scorers on our team. So I was shocked. Love it.

44:29Cristina Alexander:And Jalen, you've just had this type of resurgence, I think, to your game since coming to Gotham, since you've arrived. How have you kind of taken on that role and embraced being that type of midfield engine that the team has needed? Yeah, I think coming into this season, I wanted this season to kind of be a revival for me, a new team. And I picked Gotham for a reason. World-class players. Coach Juan has been nothing but incredible to me. The belief that he's put into me I think has really helped my career and my season. And so I just wanted to do everything possible I could for this team. I love these girls.

45:07They're amazing. And to be able to play with world-class players every day has really pushed me and ultimately I think has really helped me this year. And Sarah, let's take it to you now because we saw you start a lot of games this season, getting your minutes in. But heading into the final now, you're a chance creator. How are you looking to break down Washington's back line? I mean, I think Jalen said it best when we have world-class players on this roster. I mean, top to bottom, I would trust any single one of them to get on the end of anything I send into that box. So I'm just going to continue to do my best to play my role and trust that everybody around me is going to do the same.

45:42I've seen it time and time again. I think the whole world has seen how talented these players are. So I think we're just going to focus on our game plan and do our best to create as most as we can.

45:54Cristina Alexander:And as midfielders, like, describe the type of, you know, transitional game that you have to have when maybe Rose is allowed to kind of just play this freedom role to be able to drift out wide or go forward into the attack more often than normal and how that rotation happens. Yeah, I mean, we want Rose on the ball as much as possible. So whatever to get her on the ball, whatever rotation she needs to do. And I think when our head is up in the middle, we're looking for her, just her ability to create and her ability to score off chances and big moments and big games. And so it's been a privilege being able to play with her.

46:31I always say, like, I knew she was an excellent soccer player, but now being with her in midfield is just something else and it's so special. Being able to learn from her, you know, one of the best midfielders, in my opinion, of all time and just what she's able to do. And I think even as a teammate, you know, helping us in the middle, young midfielders, she's been incredible for that this year too. Yeah, Juan Carlos seems to be like this coach that unlocks all of your potentials. I know you just mentioned him, but Sarah, how has that been for you to have someone like Juan Carlos Amoros maybe help you play a little bit more freely?

47:05Yeah, I mean, the second I stepped onto this team, he instilled his belief in me and he told me that he trusted me. So the last thing I needed to do was just trust myself. He continues to prepare me the best that he possibly can for every single moment that I'm on the field. He really prepares us all pretty well. Every game plan is solidified and translated to us very clearly. So I think that just trusting his information and his plan for me and then going out and executing it is all I got to do. How's that been like for you, Jalen? Yeah, I think Juan has been a game changer for me in my career.

47:40He's a coach that has believed in me from the start and gave me the confidence to come back in and play like myself and play with freedom and play with joy. This is the most fun I've had playing in a very long time and I think that's a big credit to him and what he's invested in me and what this club has invested in me. So I'm just truly grateful to him.

47:57Cristina Alexander:And Jaden, you've had this automatic connection with Jaden coming into the team immediately. How has that kind of happened and formed so quickly for you? Yeah, I mean, I love playing with Jaden. She's so dynamic. She's such a smart player for her age and how young she is. And she's just an incredible human being, too. So I think we've just clicked on and off the field and it's been so fun for our relationship to grow in that way. And obviously she's came in so clutch for us. And so we just love having her on the team. And again, just a credible person and player. Yeah, I think even she forgets that she came in halfway through the season.

48:35She started talking about, yeah, ever since the preseason was like, wait, I wasn't here. in every season. So, I mean, it's a testament. And she really talks highly, obviously, of how all of you have embraced her in this locker room as well. And Sarah, with that, how has this locker room environment helped you in your first championship week? I mean, the girls on this team are incredible people, even more so than they are incredible players. I think that they continue to voice their belief in all of us young players. But they also set an example every time they step on the field, whether that's training, whether that's a game, whether that's just their recovery process off the field or the way that they treat others off the field.

49:13I think that they set the standard for the rest of us to follow. So without them, I certainly wouldn't be here today. And I'm so grateful that I was able to watch them for my rookie year.

49:23Cristina Alexander:And throughout the season, Gotham, you all have created so many different types of opportunities in front of goal, but not necessarily in the playoffs. You might have one or two chances in these matches and beating the Shield winners and then beating the reigning champions. How do you make those so decisive opportunities in front of goal when you only have those one or two moments? Well, we'd like to have more moments, but we score them when they count, and I think that's just credit to our mentality. I think just the never-say-die, just this dog mentality that we have and our belief in each other.

49:58I mean, I look around on the field with the players I get to play with every day and incredible talent. And not only that, but just like Sarah was saying, how they've all embraced us, the older experienced players and Jess, Sonnet, Rose, just how they've helped to uplift the team. And so obviously in big moments, you know, we know that everybody has their back. And so I think that's just a huge part of it and just the fight that we have for each other in these games. Yeah, I mean, but it's true that both of you just are also used to this winning mentality. I mean, I remember one of the best conversations we had with you before.

50:34I can't even remember. We've had so many Gotham games on ESPN. That is not a complaint, by the way, about your family's football background and how you've been able to kind of implement that into your game. Mentality-wise, how has that played a role here in this big stretch of the season? Yeah, I think mental toughness is something I grew up on. You know, my dad. And physical toughness. Yeah, and physical toughness. I mean, you can see the football background in my family. So my dad is a huge part of that. And growing up with two brothers who have also played football, just a competitive environment.

51:07And just he always said, you know, you can control your attitude and your effort. So every game, that's what I look to do. And I think that really embodies our team, too. I think no matter what, we're going to give 100 % for each other. And you've really seen this in this last stretch. I think no matter what, we're going to put it all on the line. I think this team performs the best, actually, when our backs are against the wall. And I think we've shown that. And so heading into this weekend, I think that's going to be beneficial for us. Yeah, very comfortable under pressure, both of you. And we really appreciate you taking the time here with us on Football W.

51:38Best of luck to both of you on Saturday. Thanks, Jalen. Thanks, Sarah. Thank you so much. Thank you. More chats coming up here very soon. But let's break it down here with Gotham League ranks now with goal differential. They are second. Big chance converters as well. Very clinical, as we've already mentioned here. Maybe not the highest amount of opportunities, but they find the back of the net when it counts. Progressive carries as well and successful 1v1s. They are the first in league rigs. No doubt, two standouts here with Emily Sonnet and Rose Lavelle and what we've seen in their games, especially as of late. Sonnet with the all-time minutes leader for NWSL playoffs.

54:04And Lavelle, of course, scoring her first career NWSL penalty on decision day. So great to see her back as well from that injury to be able to show us the player that she truly is. And we are so happy to welcome them both here now on Football W. Roosevelt, Emily Sonnet, although it's weird to even call you Emily, right? Can I call you Sonnet? You can call me Emily. Thank you. Oh, I can call you Emily. I'm just kidding. She's about the jokes. I asked the question. I like it. Yeah, Sonnet, Emily, everything's perfect. No, I love it. That was such like an initiation and I'm kind of honored that that just happened.

54:43Do not apologize. Listen, from afar, it's been great to see both of you. And it's so exciting to be able to talk to you both. How's Wilma? Most important question. She's so good. She's 13. She's 13. Thriving the little teenage girl. She's an inspiration for Bulldogs. I mean, dogs are the best. They are. They are the best. Hopefully you'll be able to bring a title home to her and what this postseason has meant to both of you. So let's dive right into it. Rose, I'll start with you. How has this postseason been for you, especially after missing time, as I just mentioned, coming back from injury and really just being the player that we all expect from you with Gotham?

55:22Yeah, I think it's been great. I think we obviously finished the season a little bit in a disappointing spot. I think we know that we didn't perform to the level of the group we have. So I think going into playoffs, it's like it's a clean slate. It's a new season for everybody. So I think with that in mind, we have so much confidence in the group that we have and in the talent within that group. So I think that's what we've been really leaning into the past couple games. Emily? Yeah, no, I think kind of nailed it. Having kind of a disappointing season, but being able to kind of reset for the postseason is something that we've seen this group adjust to.

55:58Turning into, you know, a one game at a time mindset, having a little bit of grit, getting through quarters, semis, and then hopefully that transcending into the championship. Yeah.

56:08Cristina Alexander:You two have had some big moments together with the U.S. Women's National Team, Seattle Reign, and now Gotham. You've been playing together for a while now. How does that connection of you two translate onto the field, and especially in these big moments? Great question. Great question. I think, if anything, it's like it allows us to maybe, like, hold each other accountable on the field. I think we obviously have that trust off the field, and I think it translates on the field. I think we are very confident in each other's ability, but also able to have conversations and problem-solve together really honestly.

56:49Yeah, what do you think? Yeah, I definitely think the problem-solving bit, being able to play not only with Rose, but a lot of these players, to be able to problem-solve on the field with great football minds. One thing I do want to bring up, I think the types of leadership that we both kind of bring. I think I'm someone who communicates a lot. It's loud, you know, facial expression. But I think what maybe doesn't get seen, Rose leads a lot by example. So to be able to have kind of like that mixture and seeing it from obviously Seattle to Gotham and international has been really, really great.

57:16Do you ever yell at each other on the field?

57:19Cristina Alexander:Nah. And grabs that on occasion? Have we? There's kind of like best friend pass, you know, like it's more positive. Yeah. Yeah. But she's definitely more level-headed and she keeps us on the reserve. She could just go north, you know what I mean? Yeah. You hold down the back. Totally. Yeah. I want to take it to your mind games here. Mind games. Sonnet. Totally. With what we saw. I'm going to call you Sonnet. Totally. Because I want to. That's great. All right. I mean, I could watch you and Marta play against each other every day. Every day. We're bringing it up. We're bringing it up. I wouldn't say a fly on the wall, but a fly close to your conversations.

58:00What has this matchup been like for you throughout the season and what we saw last week? I mean, kind of like nine years. I mean, Marta's an incredible player. I actually had my first cap against Marta internationally, which was really hard, 90 degrees in Orlando. It was crazy. But being able to play against a player like this and kind of keep up with the best, who keeps kind of showing that she's still at this level and the best, it's pretty incredible. Hopefully I do an okay job. But yeah, constantly learning when I play against her because she is definitely still at the top of her game. Is she the best trash talker of the league?

58:35That's what everyone's saying. I haven't ever been trash talked by you, so I don't know from experience. But if that's what I'm saying. Yeah, I think everyone's really competitive. Being able to get a word in, it's great to hear. People are listening. They're hearing me. So it's good feedback. But yeah, no being able to you know in sport you're allowed to misbehave between the white lines and then

59:01Cristina Alexander:I feel like you turn into different people when you're out there. And you're just like a new person. I don't think I was ever like myself often. But I think that's what brings out the best. It's like you know everyone's really competitive and you get that side of you know maybe Trinity, myself, Rose. If we can get that out of you soon. You know, I think that's what we're looking for. You can just keep begging people. Yeah, totally. You're fine. Simon Assassin. Yeah, just scoring goals. Sonnet, you know, speaking of just that competitiveness, Gotham has only conceded one goal this postseason after beating the Shield winners and then the reigning champs.

59:33Cristina Alexander:Like, how is that connection with the back line, you know, has been so powerful, just leading from the back and just having that consistency and that connection with, you know, your other teammates in the back kind of holding it down for Gotham. Yeah, totally. I think, you know, giving a lot of praise to Anne, Jess, you know, Mandy, Bruna, Lily, us all being able to get on the same page, you know, fairly quickly after season and going to postseason and really fine-tuning. Again, I'm learning a lot from them. But being able to sit down and analyze so we can start performing at our best at probably the best time of the season.

1:00:11So being able to put that quarterfinal performance, how do we look at that, going to semis and then how do we hopefully fine-tune a few things um going against spirit what are you hoping to fine-tune here for the championship rose oh sorry i'll start with you um i think for us like finding um more like shorter connections i think continuing to like build on our build out phase and having confidence on the ball i think making sure that we're like locked in defensively with our press um I think like just on both ends of the ball spirit's obviously a great team so we're gonna have to bring our best to to beat them but um yeah I think it's something that we like continue to grow from game to game in this um playoff experience um and yeah I think we'll we'll look at those things and continue to like build on the momentum, I guess.

1:01:07Is that it? Yeah. I think in the best way, if we can keep with our defending, how we fine tune that, but then, you know, kind of starting and putting that on a launch pad to some of our best attacking players, getting them involved in the game early, coming from our defensive moments and the transitions, I think is something that hopefully we can be a little better at.

1:01:30Cristina Alexander:And, Rose, how are you going to be able to find, specifically just in midfield, just chances to create, against a team that loves to press super high and kind of limit your chances in midfield? Yeah, I mean, I think it's like a team that loves to press. Once you beat their shape, you have to make sure you don't play them back into it. So I think that's like a change of pace once we beat their press. Being clinical in transition and clinical in those moments, I think that's going to be really big for us. Yeah, I mean, with everything that we're seeing from Washington as well, what would you say is Gotham's biggest strength?

1:02:06Right now, I think our organization from top to bottom, defensively, I think we're getting it right. I think kind of like what I said, at the right moments. And hopefully that's sparking into the attack. Again, limiting what Spirit can do and using that to our advantage, I think, is going to be what we need to do to win a championship.

1:02:29Cristina Alexander:And what would this mean for both of you to win a championship, you know, representing Gotham and just after the year that you've had and continuing this amazing, you know, postseason play? I think it'd be really special and fun. I think we have such a great group on and off the field that has been really fun to be a part of. We've obviously had a bit of an up and down season, but I think like when you're able to experience adversity, it helps set you up for moments like this. So I think, like, being able to win on Saturday would just be, like, a culmination of all the hard work we've put in. And then I think also, like, being a part of, like, the New York, New Jersey sports market is just, like, such a fun, special thing.

1:03:10So I think being able to bring a trophy back home to that would be really cool. Yeah, I think Rose really nailed it. I do think about our connections this year as a team. Like, you know, we've been on the road a lot, so we've been around each other a lot. So we're building these friendships and connections, and it makes it feel any championship team, you're going to have this journey. It's a new team from the year prior, the year prior, right? So I think this group is really special, and leading into the game to win a championship would be awesome. To put a bow on the season of what we've seen from Gotham FC and this really impressive and historic playoff run that this team has really had, thank you both so much for hanging out with us.

1:03:53Thanks for the roast. I appreciate it. It truly is one of the best moments in my career. It wasn't planned. It's fine. I wanted to test you a little bit because I've heard you're really fun to talk to. Totally. So I totally get it now. I have gotten the full Emily Sonnet experience. I love that. Rose, thank you so much. Sonnet, good luck to you both. She's like, it's Emily. I flip-flopped between both. Perfect. Thanks, guys. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Good luck. Good luck, gals. Thank you. All right, let's get into more on what we've seen this championship week here with NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman, who received a multi-year extension in her current role.

1:04:35The league confirmed today. Berman took over the commissioner role back in 2022, and her new deal will extend through 2028.

1:04:46NWSL Commissioner Jessica Berman joins the show. Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with us. What an exciting week it's been. A new market, another sold-out NWSL championship. What does this moment reflect about where the league is right now? Well, every year since 2022, we've tried to expand the footprint of the week leading up to championships so that people feel like it's a destination and an opportunity to celebrate the season. And it definitely feels bigger and better than last year. and we moved up the start of the week to Wednesday to be able to introduce our first ever award show, which was on ESPN too.

1:05:27And it was amazing. And it was amazing just to have the closure of the season and to see all the highlights and to celebrate all the incredible athletes in our league. And so many of them came. And of course, their fits were amazing. And we had the great Allie Krieger introducing the Defender of the Year, obviously. An award that I never won. I wanted you to say that in your remarks, but I'm glad you said it here. They definitely would have laughed and you deserve it. If I could give you the award, I would. Thank you. But really, it's just it's just an opportunity for us to celebrate the growth of the league and what was another historic season.

1:06:06Love it.

1:06:07Cristina Alexander:And this is, you know, obviously the word on the street about Trinity Rodman's contract situation has sparked so many conversations, specifically about the salary cap. So from your perspective, how do you balance that player ambition with the league's sustainability moving in the future? It has to be a balance, and we are doing both and. We're continuing to raise the cap and continuing to drive revenue and commercial growth so that we can support the investment that we want to make, not just in player compensation, but in the infrastructure that the players deserve, in the staff and resources to be able to be the best athletes they can be both on and off the field.

1:06:50And we're doing every single thing as quickly as we can on behalf of the collective. We're looking at it not just as one club problem to solve. We look at all of our clubs and want to make sure that they are all in a position to compete and be successful and be in a position to attract, retain, and develop top talent. Jessica, just on that topic, I mean, you said an hour or two ago, we'll fight for Trinity. And I think a lot of people want to know, what does that look like? How quickly can it happen? You just said, I mean, what stops the league from coming up with a DP rule like MLS in quick succession here?

1:07:28Is it something that you feel like the league can be nimble about? Well, we are always looking at our policies and the systems we have in place to make sure that they are right for where we are in the moment. And that review is always underway. We do believe that there are a lot of very compelling reasons for whether it's talking about Trinity or other top players to play in the NWSL. And it isn't just about compensation. And it isn't just about compensation from their club. We are in a market in the U.S. where brands show up to invest in athletes where that doesn't exist in other countries the way it does here.

1:08:11We also know that the league offers support, both from a financial and other perspective, investing in players in a way that other structures and other leagues just don't have. They are just set up differently than we are. And we also know that the other investments, the holistic value proposition that we're offering to players is unique. And so it is our hope that whether we're talking to Trinity and her agent or other top players, we expect those considerations to all be factored in. We've won more than we've lost in the global battle for talent. And we know that players have choice. And it's the reason we eliminated the draft this year.

1:08:53It's the reason that we gave players free choice in being able to evaluate which market they want to play for and which club they want to be at. and we think that we're set up for success. And what's been the biggest evidence that you just named it as the global battle for talent? We saw a name like Alyssa Thompson make her way to WSL. How are you hoping to see that kind of in a reverse effect, which maybe we've already seen with names like Sofia Cantore coming to the NWSL? Well, you took the words out of my mouth. I know it's very easy to focus on the one or two players that have recently left and we want those players here to be clear.

1:09:29but there are equal, if not more, top players who have chosen to come. You look at, yes, Sofia Cantore. You look at Jackie Ovale coming out of Mexico, who could have gone to any team in the world. Everyone wanted her, and she chose to come to the Orlando Pride. Mia Fischel has come home. We know, and you could speak to this better than anyone, that when U.S. Women's National Team players have chosen to play overseas, that they come back. And we know that we want to be a place where the best players in the world want to play. yes, U.S. Women's National Team players, but also players from other countries, because today is very different than five or ten years ago.

1:10:04There's top talent everywhere in the world, and we feel like we're doing a really good job of attracting top talent from everywhere.

1:10:11Cristina Alexander:And Commissioner, what are the biggest areas of growth that you're targeting specifically in the next few years for fan engagement, but also just the player experience in general? I'd say two things. First, we know that we have to be at the forefront of the soccer narrative here in this country. There are unique milestones that are upon us in the coming years. You look at the Men's World Cup next year. You look at the Women's World Cup in Brazil. And of course, the pinnacle of it all, that the Women's World Cup is going to be here in 2031. And knowing that when people think of soccer in this country and they think of women first when they think of soccer in America and we have an opportunity to lead and be the tip of the spear in terms of how people think about this sport which we do believe the the reckoning has arrived this country is and going to will embrace this sport and we think the NWSL will become ubiquitous with the community that we know will cherish this great game.

1:11:21All right, well, let's talk about another fun topic. We talked about it just a little bit ago. The calendar, MLS flipping their calendar, fall to spring in 2027, something that the league, the NWSL has talked about. What are the unique challenges with MLS doing that? And does it push you in any certain direction as the NWSL? Well, it'll be a consideration for us. Of course, we have paid attention to the discussions happening at MLS, But you also know that we've been having those same discussions over the last several seasons, certainly that I've been here. And it is one of the things that we will factor into the equation.

1:11:57There are pros and cons to us being on either the same or a different calendar than MLS. And we're doing that analysis as we speak to better understand, in particular, where we share ownership or share a venue, that we understand how them playing what is fall to spring would affect us with our current footprint or how it would affect us if we were on the same footprint. And all those conversations are underway. The analysis is underway. And I have no doubt, as we always do when we think about the NWSL and our superpower, we will think about it through the lens of what is in the best interest of our league and this sport with professional women's soccer at the forefront.

1:12:42Yeah, and with one of those interests, too, you've mentioned one of the strengths of this league is parity. And what we're seeing now is an eight-seed Gotham versus a back-to-back finalist in Washington. Obviously, you know, in Jaden Shaw's word, and I won't say all the words that she used, but, you know. We said it the other week. Yeah, we already said it. I already used that card this season. But she said, underdog's my butt. And it makes for a great story in the final, too. But with that parity in mind, what sort of final are you expecting on Saturday? Well, let me just start by saying being an 8th seed in the league, we know from Decision Day, which was also on ESPN, that Gotham could have been a 4th seed and they ended up as an 8th seed.

1:13:24And there were teams that ended up as a 9th seed that could have been in the playoffs. And that is the beauty of the NWSL. You do not know who is going to win the game before it starts. And that is one of our unique value propositions for players and fans. People want to know that the competition matters and that there's integrity to the competition and that there's a reason to play for the players and that there's a reason to watch. And so I'm excited for this weekend. I think the playoffs this year, I would argue, best I've ever seen. It was a lot of extra time. We had one go to PKs and we had one that ended in regulation with one minute to go.

1:14:03And obviously Ann Katrinberger made her save that actually would have sent that to extra time, too. So it was amazing. And I have no doubt that this weekend's match on Saturday night is going to be just as incredible.

1:14:17Cristina Alexander:We see now that Atlanta is another new franchise coming into the league. We have now three teams entering the league in about two years. So how do you preserve the league mindfully without, you know, having it be a little bit diluted? Just with the amount of players that we have and the competition and the talent. Well, I think we think about this from two perspectives on the pipeline of talent, both for players and for technical staff, which is that we sit on a hotbed of talent in this country. There is no other country in the world that can compete with the number of girls that have access to sport and are playing.

1:14:59And we think with some more strategic focus and partnership with U.S. soccer that we can really help to unlock that development pathway and make sure that for the next generation of Alley Kriegers, it isn't so hard to figure out how to get yourself to either the national team and or to play professional. But we also know, and I talked about this a little bit earlier, that we've really shifted our mindset in the NWSL from being a domestic league to a global league. And that was very intentional. And part of that is because it isn't only the U.S. Women's National Team who are competitive and top talent.

1:15:35There's incredible talent everywhere in the world. And we want those players to come here, too. And so when we think about expansion, there's no shortage of potential talent. That is that will not be the rate limiting factor of our expansion. The players, the technical staff, they are all over the world. We need to make sure that they know the NWSL, that we're in a position to cultivate, develop, and attract them, whether it's here domestically or from overseas. Yeah, unless Jeff or Ali have anything else, Jeff, or we said? Well, I think we'd be remiss not to mention. I was going to say, if you give him another chance to ask a question, you know he's going to ask it.

1:16:10Officially, this is a good one for you. Officially now, finally, you don't have to say you intend to be here. It's announced that you have gotten an extension as commissioner. So what is it for you personally these next few years that you look at as a priority or how you hope to evolve even yourself in the role and see the league evolve? Yeah, well, thank you. And I am excited to not give the awkward answer of I intend to be here and to have it officially announced. And I feel incredibly excited about the future of this league. And for me personally, the opportunity to continue to lead this league, particularly with this as the beginning of the second chapter, is just awesome.

1:16:50I feel thrilled. The next phase of growth is really about solving different challenges. These are the challenges that exist for a high-growth business, an emerging property, a league that we know is going to have to fight for airtime, for promotion, for marketing. for investment from brands and from media partners. And we have done the work to create the stability and the foundation that allows for our constituents, whether it's our players, our staff, or our fans to trust in our league. And we're bringing all of those people along with us. And now we have to really focus on the discoverability of our sport, making sure that we're providing access to people who want to learn about the game, making sure that we're cultivating the right partnerships to create the cultural relevance for the NWSL.

1:17:44And all of that through the lens of what we discussed earlier, which is these milestone moments that are going to be really exclamation points on women's soccer in this country. And so with those unique opportunities, I couldn't be more excited about the future. Well, it's been a record-breaking season already. We had the lovely opportunity as well to talk to Tim Wachewing and just everything that Kansas City Current was able to do as well. So thank you so much, Commissioner, for taking the time. I have one more question. What's your prediction this weekend?

1:18:16Cristina Alexander:Oh, that's a good one. I like to say that I root for R &R. Not the kind of R you're all thinking about, rest and relaxation, but ratings and refs. Revenue. No, ratings. In this context for Saturday, no, I mean, We want a great, clean competition. We want our players to go out there and have fun. I know. I know. That's the Rob Lowe cat. I know. You need to get on our NWSL. Well, thankfully, we have NWSL merch, so I can wear my league merch. And we're so excited for this weekend. And we're so excited you guys are here with us. The merch is really cool, too. It is. I sent some pictures, but I can't say the brand name on here.

1:19:01Commissioner, thank you so much, again, for taking the time. Let it be a great championship. Thank you. As you said, appreciate it. Just do one more. One more wave and I go for it. We're on. Go, Thomas B. Baby! Yes! Bathom has a chance in the box. Shot on the crossbar. And the eighth seed is moving on to the semifinal. Seed by Kingsbury. A legendary performance.

1:19:27Cristina Alexander:And the spirit move on to the semifinal. It is Sean putting it right on goal. And it's it, Thomas! And scores! This Gotham team is headed back to the championship! Colossi, slot, here's Rose! Knocked in by Mundy! Washington's going to the final again! We're ready to start again!

1:19:55Alright, let's get into the head-to-head of it all with Washington Spirit and Gotham and NWSL this year. No wins for Washington and that single at least win for Gotham. Three goals scored for them. And the shots, I mean, they're pretty even as well as possession. And I feel that's kind of the tale of what we're expecting at least this Saturday. But we're going to ask the tough questions because that's what we do on Football W. Allie Krieger, I'm going to start with you. Of course, of course. Who wins on Saturday?

1:20:30Cristina Alexander:I'm going to say Gotham. FC, 2-1 against the Spirit. I think their attacking firepower is incredible. I think their front six are working on all cylinders right now. They have that fire underneath of them and motivation to want to win. And they beat the best team in the league this season, and they also just beat Orlando, who are the reigning champions. So they are on a hot run right now, and I think they're going to pull it through. All right. Jeff? I'm going to flip the script on the 2-1. I think 2-1 spirit. I mean, I hear the fire, the motivation, and I see the same thing with Washington. I mean, I think this is a team that's motivated by last year losing in the final.

1:21:18I think it's a team that we don't know maybe is playing the swan song for its star player in Trinity Rodman. And I think that when you look at those semifinals, and of course these coaches will adjust, But the Spirit had so much success in those flanks against Portland. And if you look at the other semifinals, Gotham struggled so greatly against Orlando in those flanks. And as good as these midfields are, if they cancel each other out, Gotham tends to play a little bit more narrow. I think the Spirit in those wide areas, Kowasi, Wiesner, I think that's where the game can be won for Washington.

1:21:50All right. So now I get to participate in predictions. This isn't a usual thing, but it's a special occasion. It's for the championship. So I think Gotham is taking this, but they're taking it 1-0. I don't see a lot of goals. I think that's kind of been the tendency as well in these playoffs, but they've done enough to make it to this point, right? I mean, the game is about moments, and correct me if I'm wrong, Ali, but it's also about how you wake up that morning. Maybe the ball takes a slight deflection like Sonnet did, And that's why we didn't see the goal, the Jackie Ovalle goal, go in against Orlando.

1:22:28And that's kind of been Gotham's pattern, right? Holding out to the very last second of the game, whether it's Katie Stengel, whether it's Jaden Shaw. So I would be kind of surprised if we saw a completely different game here from Gotham. The strategy that they've had, the formula that they've applied has really worked for them, right? And that's what they've done all season to make it to this point. Did they want to finish the season as an eighth seed and go into these players as an eighth seed? No, they wanted to finish higher up. They wanted to clinch at home for these playoffs. But they're here now and might as well just go for it.

1:23:01And if it's a 1-0 game, if it's a last-ditch effort, if you score early and still are able to hold Washington Spirit back, I don't know. It's just maybe a little feeling. But we'll have to see if we're right or if Jeff is right. But at the end of the day, We are going to enjoy a great championship day as we did enjoy, obviously, media day. But this isn't the last one for us when it comes to this at WSL season. We will see you after the championship game. We're so excited. We're going to be able to react to that. Jeff, you're sticking around for the game. So looking forward to all things on.com and all the great articles.

1:23:44Thank you so much for hanging out with us from San Jose, California. We will see you on Saturday.

1:23:57We'll see you next time.
