0:09Ali Krieger:Hello and welcome into the latest edition of Football W. We're switching things up today. It's me Kay Murray in the hosting chair but I know Ali Krieger will guide me through it and look after me. She is more than capable to help me here. We've got lots coming up today. NWSL interviews with Ali Krieger, herself Temwa Chawinga and Croix Bethune both sat down with Ali. They will also be seeing Madonna. Yes, Madonna, the Queen of Pop, in the stands at a WSL game. More on that coming up later. But it is in the WSL where we'll kick things off because it was Arsenal taking on Manchester City. And this is what we've got to show you from that game.

0:44Ali Krieger:League leaders, of course, Manchester City. It's the 14th minute, though. It's Arsenal on the attack. Strong run from Mariona Caldente. The through ball to Olivia Smith, and it's a goal.

0:54Kay Murray:Yeah, this was an incredible ball through. gives her the best opportunity to go straight to goal 1v1 and she just happens to beat knack here defensively cuts it around the goalkeeper and finishes a beautiful ball nice stuff

1:07Ali Krieger:another look at that one there and that finish from olivia smith to give arsenal the 1-0 lead 42nd minute gunners should have probably doubled that lead city can't clear the ball

1:19Kay Murray:alessia russo shot saved here yeah this is something she's so brilliant at unfortunately couldn't get enough power behind this but tough she's in and around three four defenders she pokes

1:30Ali Krieger:it a little bit with her toe but great save into the 60th minute and it is city on the attack a penalty appeal that would be turned down lauren hemp looks like she was fouled to stop this goal scoring opportunity here could be a red card for caldente but no foul called by the ref yes watching

1:48Kay Murray:this in real time i definitely thought this is a a bit of a bit of a foul and red card could have bend easily so I was surprised at that.

1:56Ali Krieger:And then we take it to the 77th minute. Vivian Miedema.

2:03Kay Murray:Great touch here. Obviously she's trying to get in and around. Unfortunate foul there but great footwork skills. Just couldn't find any opportunity to get the ball in the back of the net.

2:13Ali Krieger:Yeah no penalty called there either and the win would stand for Arsenal. It's only the second time this season that City have lost they had that first loss on the opening day this their second defeat and so they had the chance to open off an 11-point lead at the top of the table it's just now an eight-point lead for them 1-0 it finished to us now let's hear from the goal scorer speaking after the game here is Olivia

2:37Temwa Chawinga:Smith big result how do you feel about that one yeah super excited super happy um we worked really hard for this and they've had a great run of games and we We knew we had to be at our best to win today. Another goal for you at the Emirates, putting your head in that first half. How did you feel when you scored that? And what is it about this pace that really sets you alight? Just the atmosphere. The fans are amazing. They're a 12th player. And to score in the Emirates, I love to score in the Emirates. So they just make it a great atmosphere. And yeah, just super happy about it.

3:08Ali Krieger:And next off from Olivia Smith there. This is the table, though. Arsenal sitting 10 points behind City as it stands. As mentioned, City had a chance to open up what would have been an 11-point lead at the top of the table, but they now remain eight points ahead of Manchester United in second. Arsenal sit in fourth. They have played a game less, though. They are a point behind Chelsea in third as it stands right now. Maybe the WSL is out of their reach this season, but when it comes to other titles, they're definitely in with a shot this season, Ali.

3:36Kay Murray:Yes, Arsenal have been on an incredible run, especially in the WSL, but they just beat Corinthians in the Champions Cup and then they turned back and beat Man City in the WSL. They beat Chelsea as well, and they just beat Ashton Villa in the FA Cup. So they are on an incredible run, and I think Rene has done an excellent job with the rotation of players in these competitions. Because on the other side, Man City, they just focus on WSL because they aren't in that competition. So it's really incredible to see how strong they are. And in the top six players, or in the front six, you have so much depth there and so many options to choose from.

4:11Kay Murray:So they can kind of navigate depending on who they play against.

4:15Ali Krieger:Yeah, so I was looking, and obviously with the defender here, I just wanted to say it's been three clean sheets for them now. It's the first time they've had a run of three. It was five in January of 2025. Yes, I'm going way back then. I mean, that is always a great thing and a good sign that things are working for a team as well.

4:30Kay Murray:Yeah, for sure. I think structurally they're very confident, they're compact, and they like to win the ball back immediately, which has been really helpful. And now Leah Williamson is back, who's an incredible defender. who they've been missing out for her calf injury. She's back in. And Kim Little also is staying strong and controlling that midfield, which she's just a staple in there and really able to get the team connected and together. They're looking good. How much better could they be, Arsenal? They... Domestically, they struggle, right? They've proven with Champions League win and in recent years, and then now on the world's stage in the new tournament of the Champions Cup, they won that so internationally they have proven themselves but domestically they still haven't been able to get there because of Chelsea winning the past six titles so they need to prove themselves and I think they did this past weekend against a really really confident Man City team so the depth that they have the interchange and the players Rene's plan and you know each game has been different.

5:40Kay Murray:The way she's been using players, I think the mentality has been incredible. And then the forwards are able to finish their goals. They're able to create and they're able to finish their opportunities. And I think that is what has been separating themselves from the other teams domestically. So let's get to Manchester City. I think it was last week.

5:57Ali Krieger:You were like, okay, it's pretty much done now with them. And obviously with the lead that they had, you're like, okay, fine. It's still a big lead right now. Are there any concerns for you though, given the fact that they did just lose this game?

6:07Kay Murray:No, there's no concerns. Luckily, they're eight points, I think, ahead of everyone else in the league. And like I said before, their focus now is just on the WSL because they are not in the Champions League. And I think that's been played to their advantage. But with a new coach and a new structure, a new philosophy, I think they have more freedom within the play and style that they've been playing in. And I think with Gareth Taylor, you know, last season, they didn't have that freedom within that structure. And I think, you know, when you play with that freedom, that fun, that focus, you enjoy your football a lot more.

6:40Kay Murray:So I think the new structure has really given them that confidence, that mentality to play the way that they've been performing and to get up, you know, high up on the table. But also something that has separated them from other teams is having everybody healthy. There's not many injuries. And so they're able to use their full depth of the squad. And I remember in recent seasons, everyone has been talking about, well, if Man City were at full strength, then maybe they would be at the top of the table. And now we see that, that they have their, you know, everyone's fit, everyone's healthy, and they're able to perform their best.

7:13Kay Murray:But under the structure and the philosophy that they have now, I think they have a really good understanding of how to perform well and consistently at the level. And now they're just thriving. And obviously, I'm so happy that we have Sam Coffey now to watch every weekend. you know an American player who's representing us very well there hopefully she'll get into the the squad a little bit more but easing her way in it's really great to see and they've been

7:37Ali Krieger:thriving yeah absolutely let's get to some more action from England we've got Spurs taking on Chelsea and a very famous name and face up in the stands yes that is Madonna and Madonna has her twins in the academy at Spurs but would she be Spurs' lucky star that's what we were asking today This was Olivia Holt in the 11th minute, shot off the crossbar.

8:00Kay Murray:Yeah, what I love about this is she just continued to dribble and take players on and unfortunately hits the crossbar. But here Chelsea on the other end was able to put the ball in the back of the net. Walsh, well done. It's really difficult to get the ball down as it's bouncing, but she does well. Slight deflection, but right in the back of the net.

8:17Ali Krieger:Yeah, so one from Kira Walsh there. And then in the 49th minute, first shot's going to be saved by Nuskim, But Alyssa Thompson makes sure to score the rebound. Yes, well done to be there.

8:28Kay Murray:Another American star that we're super proud of. Unfortunate rebound, but she does well to keep this low and hit it into the back of the net.

8:37Ali Krieger:Yep, so that would finish 2-0 to Chelsea as it stands right now. And it's Alyssa Thompson that we need to talk about. Obviously getting the second of the goals there. First high schooler taken first in the NWSL draft back with Angel City FC. and now playing her football at Chelsea. What actually is her ceiling as a national team player, Ali?

8:59Kay Murray:She's done so well with this opportunity that she's had. A lot of people were surprised that she would leave LA, her hometown, her home team, her family, to go have this opportunity. And for LA to let them go, you know, was really surprising for a lot of people. So it's really incredible to see how well she's done with this adjustment, this change, this level. and she's really proven herself. So her, I mean, the ceiling is endless for her. She's incredible in front of goal. The 1v1 attacking mentality is unmatched and I think that she can only continue to get better and this is just sharpening her tools for the international level that we really need to see in and amongst a lot of talented young stars on the national team as we speak.

9:47Ali Krieger:So if you were in a team with a player like this with all this talent and all this potential And obviously, we're seeing it, as you mentioned. How do you help her with her growth?

9:55Kay Murray:She actually reminds me of a younger press, Kristen Press, where it's nice to see because some of the, I guess, some of her characteristics and abilities, I know that press had helped her with in L.A. and mentored her with. So I kind of see some of that here. Really? That's so interesting. It does remind me of Kristen Press. And she has her own way, her own style, her own, you know, I guess attacking mentality that she performs with game in and game out. But she's been thriving there. And she's been so confident in the way that she wants to show up for the team, but also for herself. And I think Emma Hayes sees that.

10:32Kay Murray:And she's gaining this experience, but also coming into her own and maturing a lot, I think, in this position. But her attacking mentality, her confidence in and around the box, her energy to want to get in positions to score goals. All of that is a perfect storm for an incredible national team player, obviously club, but also at the international level is what you need to succeed.

10:57Ali Krieger:We're going to continue talking about Chelsea, but we cannot ski over the fact that Madonna was in the stands at this game. I mean, honestly, if I just sat down in the stands there, it's just Madonna sat next to me. As mentioned, it's her twin Stella and Estere who play for Spurs' academy. Honestly, I wouldn't have known what to do if I found her sat next to me. Who is the coolest person you've played in front of Ali?

11:18Kay Murray:That you know of, at least. Christina Aguilera. Oh, my goodness. She was at one of the LA games that I think we were there for. And then, obviously, Kobe Bryant. That was probably one of the, yeah, he was the coolest hands down.

11:32Ali Krieger:Yeah, that's fair enough. So, great to see Madonna up in the stands there. But we do need to talk about Chelsea because we need to show you the difference between what we've seen from them last year with that domestic treble and what we're seeing from them now. We're going to look through 15 games because you can see that there is a notable drop off in many facets here. Now, last week, Chelsea coach Sonia Van Pastore was complaining about transfers, but now she's extended her contract with the club. Here she is explaining why she did that.

12:03Croix Bethune:I think it's a big thing because not many clubs and I understand why because when you are a manager in such a high club like Chelsea you need to win games and you need to perform at your best so I know exactly what is my job about but for a club like Chelsea to be able to show that statement when people are talking about a lot of things around the team and around the results, I think it's a big statement. And I think I really appreciate that. I'm really grateful. I see a lot of good things and positive things for the future in this club and I'm really happy to contribute to that. I would say I think I know who I am.

12:42Croix Bethune:So I don't need people outside my environment to tell me who I am.

12:49Ali Krieger:What's your take on her extent, Ani? Are you surprised to see it?

12:52Kay Murray:No, I'm happy to see it. There's obviously dips that happen throughout the season and some of the best coaches have those experiences with their team, but they have incredible players. I don't think that's the issue. It's not panic mode yet. I do think that it's unusual and uncharacteristic of Chelsea, who's been the last champions for quite some time now, the WSL, and domestically. But I don't think it's panic mode. I think it's from the club. It shows that they trust in her, and they want her to continue to instill this philosophy that she's showing and the structure that she has. And then the players, I think, knowing that a coach is going to be there for an extended period of time, as a player, you can kind of take a deep breath.

13:34Kay Murray:And it lays out sometimes, you know, what you want for yourself and your development. So I think it's really helpful, too, that everyone can kind of come together in this moment where they're not playing their best.

13:46Ali Krieger:It felt strong to me, like when she was saying how sure of herself she was there, that she's not someone to be caught out when she was saying, I know who I am. It feels like she's someone who's not going to be tripped up by these journalists putting questions to her.

13:57Kay Murray:No, and it's a quiet type of confidence that I appreciate that she has. I played with Sonia in D.C. when we played for the Washington Spirit, and she had this winning mentality that I can't explain. It's just she wanted to always be that player to kind of carry the team and lead the team and create something out of nothing. So I feel like she's taken that into this position as well, this coaching position where she knows her job and her responsibility of succeeding and helping these players develop and get to where they want. It's obviously at the end of the day a business, right? You have to win and you have to perform well, but she has a job to do and she has to get results.

Read the full transcript

14:32Kay Murray:So they are in a bit of a tough spell right now, but it's definitely not panic mode and I think they have the right person for the job. And Emma Hayes also backs her well too. So it's really great to see that they trust her and she's moving forward.

14:45Ali Krieger:Did you always see when you played with her that she'd go into management? Was that something that you could see or not? Were you surprised by it?

14:51Kay Murray:I was a little surprised because she was really reserved and quiet. Maybe that was because, you know, her English wasn't as good as it is now. But she did have this confidence about her. I mean, she was one of the best players I've played with, you know, both internationally and then club. So I was so happy to play alongside her. But she played right in front of me in the midfield position. So we would combine all the time and have interactions consistently. So she was wonderful to play with, a great leader, a great person. So I see why she fits perfectly at Chelsea.

15:22Ali Krieger:Yeah, and she seems to be very calm with what she's doing right now. There's a piece that's dropped today in The Athletic about what's going on behind the scenes at Chelsea, a very dramatic piece, actually. The head of women's football, Paul Green, has parted ways with the club, obviously has overseen so much of the success at Chelsea. This is a new report. This is a developing story. I'm not going to get you to comment on this, but how hard is it when you're a player, when things like this are going on behind the scenes, or do you just go out there and kind of separate the two?

15:48Kay Murray:Well, you could see with the players' reactions what he meant to them, right? He helped build the club into, you know, this structure and the success that they've had alongside Emma Hayes. And so it's a bit surprising at this time that you see him leave. And it's a bit unfortunate with all the reactions from the players and some of the staff members. So there might be a slight adjustment. But, yeah, it's hard as a player when you confide in somebody and you feel confident and comfortable with someone within the club, a staff member who believes in you, who has fought for you, who has given you this opportunity.

16:23Kay Murray:You want to always keep that in mind and fight for them and play for them and have that in the back of your mind. But you have to continue to play and do your role and show up and play the sport that you love. So it's hard. I think you can find a good balance. But once again, it's a business and you have a contract, you have a job to do. And there's football to be played and football to be won. So you have to show up and kind of keep that off the field, which is what a lot of players, I think, tend to do. They just go play in fun, freedom and focus. And then you deal with all the other things in the most professional way that you can.

17:04Ali Krieger:So that's one contract that's been extended at Chelsea. see one that isn't going to be is Kat Macario who has turned down an extension that's certainly the way it's looking right now uh current deal expiring this summer where would you like to see her play Ali because there's a lot of rumors right now about a return to this side of the

17:21Kay Murray:Atlantic yes I would love for her to come to Gotham I think that would be incredible um there's obviously so many uh you know great options for her um especially in the number nine position I I think every team wants to have a goal scoring number nine who's at the quality and the level that she plays at. But it's good to see that she has options. So many people want her on their team, and so she's not going to have an issue with that. But there's new teams in the NBSL who have quality players. I think it's a great time to be back in the NBSL, to be home, to play for her home league and her home country.

18:01Kay Murray:so it'll be wonderful to see wherever she goes and every team should be super thrilled to have an opportunity to play with her play alongside her and it'll be great for the NWSL as a whole

18:14Ali Krieger:Yeah, we'll definitely keep our eye on that one and we will keep you up to date with all that's going on right here on Football W Make sure to be with us on ESPN Plus Friday 2pm Eastern WSL action in the form of Manchester City taking on Leicester City

20:15Temwa Chawinga:Croy Bethune off the side netting. That is a big-time goal from a big-time player in Croy Bethune. Dressed in black, never come back.

20:24Ali Krieger:Kiss the dragon and we bury the shark. Bethune, into the box, Bethune. One big dream, one big dream. The star is back in action. Oh yes, the return of the NWSL is just around the corner and Ali has been busy catching up with some of the players at the media day, including Croy Bassoon of the Washington Spirit, who recently scored her first senior international goal for the U.S. women's national team. Here she is sitting down with Ali.

21:03Kay Murray:You hope Guy Washington back to the championship again. Now back-to-back finals for this group. When you reflect on that run, what does it say about the identity of this team? I feel like it shows that our identity doesn't change

21:17Temwa Chawinga:depending on who's on the team, whether we have a new coach, whether we're going through a lot. The first time it was kind of a different team from the second time. And I feel like we've shown how strong our culture is.

21:32Kay Murray:Obviously losing the final is brutal. No one wants to be in that position, but losing two in a row is something else. As a competitor, how did you process an ending like that without letting that define you?

21:43Temwa Chawinga:Yeah, I mean, no one wants to lose, but you try to look at the bright side of things. I mean, we've made it there twice, and it's hard to even get there once. And just kind of learning off of each loss, what can we take from the first one and the second one to hopefully make this third time around.

21:59Kay Murray:Throughout that playoff run, you obviously showed up truly in those big moments, the goals, the assists, the control of midfields. Do you feel like that was a season where you truly claimed your place within the team? Thank you.

22:15Temwa Chawinga:So, yeah, I mean, that was my last year was my first year back off of entry. And I was more so just focusing on getting my feet back up under me. But once I realized that, it was time to flip that switch into playoff mode.

22:29Kay Murray:Because I remember that one run you made where you just intercepted the pass against Portland. And the timing, the interception, the finish was brilliant. And a celebration, of course. what version of yourself are you personally chasing next i feel like

22:50Temwa Chawinga:croy getting her swagger back um croy being dominant again croy just wanting to be the best version of herself be i guess the best out on the field um it's 2026 and there's this trend going around that it's going to be 2016 again. And I looked back at 2016 and I was like, wow. That looks too close. No, but that Croy was, she was hungry. She wanted more at the highest level. So really getting into that again.

23:22Kay Murray:I want to talk about one of your close friends, Trinity Rodman, obviously committed long-term to the spirit, which everyone's super excited about. And the chemistry that you share is obvious. So what does that continuity mean for you and for how far this team can go?

23:38Temwa Chawinga:Yeah, I mean, we've missed Tren from last year and a little bit of the first playoff run. But to have her back, I mean, you can see how much she impacts the game. Whether people are trying to be on her and she's just drawing attention, goal scoring and being Tren, I feel like obviously we want her out there. And then you mentioned the relationships that we build. Like, Trent and I have gotten really close over the past two years, and I love that for us. And you can tell when we're out there playing.

24:09Kay Murray:Yeah, that does. Relationships really matter, even at the highest level. You're just training together every day, off-the-field moments. I think you just want to fight for each other more on the field. You can clearly see that. But there's also been a lot of conversation this offseason around the league's new high-impact player role and how clubs are investing in and keeping the top players in the NWSL. So as a young player building a long career here, how do you feel about that? What do you view of the role and what could this mean for the league's future?

24:42Temwa Chawinga:One, growth. I feel like the NWSL right now is on the rise and getting a lot of attention. Besides the attention, we really want people to invest and show that this is long-term, just like how Trent proved that. And as a young player, I feel like we're just starting something to flourish. We want more opportunities like this, not just for one player on the team, but multiple players that deserve it.

25:09Kay Murray:Jumping into the national team, you're a part of the January camp, so congratulations. And you also scored your first international goal. I'm crazy. I watched that game. So those are some moments that players never forget. and what did that experience show you about you know where you belong at this level?

25:28Temwa Chawinga:I feel like January camp was a lot of fun and it was great. We had a lot of younger players maybe some newer players. I kind of include myself in that as well but I feel like that was just a pivotal moment for me. A long time coming for the goal but timing is everything and it kind of just shows that I can do this on a different platform and a different stage. When you step into that U.S.

25:53Kay Murray:environment and produce like you do, does it change how you see yourself, or does it confirm something that you've already believed all along?

26:03Temwa Chawinga:I feel like it confirms but also gives me more confidence just because this is a different level with the national team. Higher expectations, not that those are low, but just a different stage. and then with Emma saying to improve and not prove of course everyone wants to be in the national team and go to the Olympics in the World Cups but if you're trying too hard sometimes doing too much won't necessarily work out so improve do it for yourself do it to be better and just play in the flow of the game amazing uh we're gonna do quick fire I'd love to hear

26:42Kay Murray:your thoughts on some of these so whatever comes to mind first might be a little bit of a challenge I've already asked our producer and he was stumped on a couple so we'll see how you do nervous new what's your karaoke song choice

26:55Temwa Chawinga:until the end of time Beyonce Justin Terrick oh you know that right away do

27:00Kay Murray:you perform that often or what do you in my shower a little bit for you mine's like a pale by pink so oh I love karaoke what's your signature dance move can I

27:12Temwa Chawinga:like show you yeah I've been on some bizarre now

27:19Temwa Chawinga:where's that from I don't know I just kind of like I really oh okay what's your most used emoji probably the one with the tongue out to the side and like the crazy eyes yeah is that just because it fits any mood like yeah yeah it's fun okay i love that for us thank you so much for joining us oh i love it it's such a nice interview what stood out to

27:49Kay Murray:you speaking to her she just seems so mature in the way that she wants to perform out on the field and play and win. And you don't see that often from a lot of these younger players. She's so sweet and so humble. And she's just one of the best players now in the league that we have. And so to see her speak about the game, speak about her teammates, speak about Washington as a whole, it's really exciting. And the future is going to be so bright for her. And then having her score her first international goal and how thrilled she was about that, and continuing to see her grow is going to be thrilling for all of us as fans.

28:30Ali Krieger:Did you get nostalgic when she was talking about being at the Spirit and her being pretty much at the start of it all?

28:36Kay Murray:Yeah, I think about that often and such a good question, but it is a nostalgic feeling where you want to put on that jersey again and you want to just go and hang out with your friends and play a sport that you love. So I miss it a lot, but watching them just gives me that thrill that thrill again. You're never going to have that fire by just watching on the sidelines, but it's exciting to see how the game is growing into this modern game. They have such talent, and it's really fun to watch.

29:07Ali Krieger:You could see your face change completely when she started talking about the friendship she's got with Trinity Rodman and what it's like playing with a friend. It's like so straight away that resonated with you and how important that is.

29:20Kay Murray:It is because you play better together and you you know you're part of a team sport so you want everyone on your team to succeed because you want to win you want to try to make each other look good but then in and amongst that you form these lifelong friendships and I could see that her and Trinh are forming this lifelong friendship in real time in front of our eyes and it's really really great to see because that also helps them be so successful on the field.

29:46Ali Krieger:So let's talk about what their expectations are this year because Trinity Rodman, it's a landmark contract that she's been given. There's going to be high expectations on them. What do you see happening for them?

29:55Kay Murray:I think they're ready. I think they're wanting to get back to the final and actually win. It's really tough to get to a final and lose two times in a row. But that just goes to show you that mentality, that willingness to want to perform the way that they do. And with Michelle Kang, what she's building there is pretty amazing to watch and to have to report on that and watch that in real time. So they have a great squad. They have such depth. They have quality players. They're going to be the team to beat this season. And I saw the uniform and it's going to be looking real sharp out there. We did a dripping or tripping part of the interview and it looks really, really nice.

30:38Kay Murray:So I think if they look good, they'll feel good and play good.

30:41Ali Krieger:Yeah, absolutely. I love that comment, though, at the end. There's another time when I saw you smile, the advice to to improve and not prove like it's great advice for anyone I think in any field right

30:51Kay Murray:and Emma Emma Hayes had mentioned that and in our meet our interview previously with Favre W a couple weeks ago and that stuck in my mind um that you should continue to just improve and not focus on proving yourself because we were talking about a lot of the younger players coming up into this new camp in January and she's you know she had mentioned there's there's some players that are going to be in the World Cup there's players that are going to be in the Olympics and there's players are going to be in World Cup 31. So I just have to see where they fall. And I want them to just focus on proving and not, you know, or improving, not necessarily proving themselves and doing something out of the ordinary that they normally wouldn't do, which is what Corey was touching on as well.

31:31Kay Murray:I love that you'd heard that from Emma.

31:32Ali Krieger:We did the Euros here with Emma, and she already had like the flip board out, even for us all as like pundits and hosts, like we're doing this. This is what you need to be talking about. She's just the perfect role, perfect manager.

31:43Croix Bethune:watching someone close go through loss really changes your perspective you see how quickly grief can turn into financial stress and it's something no family should have to deal with during an already difficult time experiences like that make people think differently about planning ahead and protecting the people they love life insurance isn't about expecting the worst it's about being prepared and knowing your family will be supported if something unexpected happens That's why life insurance through Ethos is worth considering. 33:58Ali Krieger:Okay, let's talk a bit more about what we've seen from these interviews that you've been doing. media day because it wasn't just Kraybathune that you caught up with you also caught up with Tenma Chawinga ahead of everything that's going on this season and especially interesting to see what's going to happen with Chawinga given the fact that the end of last season they finished injured and back to back MVP let's hear more from Tenma Chawinga.

34:25Kay Murray:So how are you feeling right now? Kind of take me through what this period of recovery look like for you mentally and physically? I'm feeling much better because the way the team show love,

34:37Croix Bethune:we have, like, the medical team, they're working hard, that we actually will be back in the field. So each step, we are taking each step well, like, maybe sooner I'll be back. Because, like, we're starting preseason. We are, the team is already here. So we're working hard, like, I'm so happy to be in this team, the way they treat me because, like, since I started my injury, like, last season, And this is when they're telling me the same thing. They didn't give up on me. So I'm happy. I'm back now. I'm starting training soon. So yeah, the medical team, we are working. We are putting more effort that I should be back.

35:10Kay Murray:And winning MVP once is special. But winning it back-to-back puts you in rare territory. So what does it take mentally to stay at that level when teams are preparing specifically for you and to defend you every single week?

35:26Croix Bethune:Yeah, I think 24 also when I was coming, 25 maybe prepared to mark me but I have good players in our team. They know when to pass the ball to me so that's why I'm very happy to be in that team. But the way my school, the way I'm playing, my teammates know so that's why they help me a lot to achieve a lot of things. The score goals, to win MVP, to win Golden Ball because of them the way they treat me in the team. and because of, without them I cannot achieve the thing the way I have been two years. Since I've been in the team like two years I've achieved a lot of things because of them. The way they treat me, because always I'm happy.

36:02Croix Bethune:Because if you're sad you cannot perform well on the page, but always I'm happy because of the way they treat me, they show me love. So that's why I'm showing up on the page, I need to work hard because of them.

36:11Kay Murray:You don't just carry responsibility for your club in Kansas City, but you're also a symbol for Malawi and for players around the world. So how do you balance that global responsibility with staying locked in on your own performances?

36:28Croix Bethune:Yeah, let's say a bounce world was a lot of things can happen. Malawi, they want me to play for another team here, my team also. So sometimes it just depends on where I'm, the way. because I work hard to have my team here. I also work hard to get another skill here to take that skill to show up to my people. A lot of generations in Malawi can learn from me because I learn a lot in the team. New culture because I was in Chinese, new culture, here is new culture. So I learn a lot. If I'm playing games, scoring goals, I'll take that thing if I go to the national team. I would tell my former striker as the forward to tell them, okay, next time I'm going to do this because of what?

37:14Croix Bethune:Because of me, like, I learned a lot in the team. We have, like, experienced players in the team, like Lola Bonta, Vanessa, like, we have, like, Debinia. So, like, I learned a lot from that people, so I can take that thing, like, to go back to home, like, to tell someone else, like, we can achieve a lot of things in the future because of the way I learned from, like, my teammate.

37:33Kay Murray:You're truly inspiring for your nation and for a lot of young talent in your country who want to be you. So that's incredible that you continue to pave the way. This offseason also brings a new chapter with a new coach, Chris Arma, stepping in. As a leader and difference maker, what excites you about this next phase and what it could look like for the team?

37:57Croix Bethune:It would look amazing. The way it was last season and this season would be the same thing because like it's a new coach but we're still the same players so like it would be the same thing like we don't care if new coach what what but we just work hard the way like it was working like these two years we work hard like more than that so we're showing up this season like the way the players were working hard because we started training already like we're showing like we're working hard they won't take something to achieve something this is when we need to win something so yeah like we chose the course but the other coaches I've got was to fear like so waiting didn't change a lot to me but it's two of the same players so first of all something that you told me off camera she's super

38:42Ali Krieger:humble mmm tell me about that obviously it's back-to-back MVPs what you wouldn't

38:46Kay Murray:really know no you wouldn't know at all and she's so humble and she's she's such a team player every every credit that she gives us to every single one of her teammates and why she's in the position that she's in so it was she's so sweet and she's hard-working but she's you know giving credit where it's due and saying that her teammates are making her look good and it's one of the reasons why she's gotten back-to-back MVP so and then to represent her country Malawi and and to really inspire all of the younger girls and boys the youth back in her country at this level and she's really proud to do that too so So it's nice to see.

39:26Kay Murray:I hope that we see her right from the beginning of the season. We don't know yet, right, how far along. We didn't touch on that too much, the return to play process for her after her injury. So that was really devastating, especially in the playoffs, you know, that she had to miss. So hopefully she's back in preseason feeling good and we'll see her at the start of this year. Because as it shows, she's the difference maker for this side completely. For sure. She's the goal scorer. She creates something out of nothing, as we've seen the past two seasons. She's been incredible for Kansas City, the top goal scorer in the league for two years in a row.

40:03Kay Murray:She can finish on a dime. She puts herself in great positions. The teammates love her. She's willing to do what others aren't, and that's what separates her from the rest.

40:13Ali Krieger:So she does get or is fully fit. What is the ceiling for the current this coming season?

40:19Kay Murray:It's going to be surprising. We don't know. Obviously, they're going to carry on with the quality that they had from last season and hopefully get further along into the playoffs and make the final because the past two seasons they've lost in the earlier stages. But with the players that they have, the quality that they have, the mentality that they have there, and now with the new coach, that's where the question mark is going to be. We don't know how Chris is going to be able to set up the team and who's going to be fit and who's going to be healthy because we know Michelle Cooper is also out for a little bit at the beginning of the season and coming back from her injury as well.

40:55Kay Murray:So it'll be, I think, a tough start for Kansas City, but hopefully, you know, with the quality that they have, they'll be able to, you know, stay at the top of the table and contend for another championship.

41:06Ali Krieger:Yeah, not long to go now until we get some more of the answers to these questions, as the NWSL, as mentioned, is just around the corner. And make sure to be with us on ESPN because you'll be able to keep up with everything that's going on. March 14th, Boston Legacy against Gotham FC. Also on ABC, 1230 p.m. Eastern. 42:45Ali Krieger:All right, El Clasico, Copa de Reina. Quarterfinals, Real Madrid hosting Barcelona. 21st minute, Alexia Puteas with the first of the goals.

42:56Kay Murray:Doing what she does best, brilliant, had her way to keep the ball down. Great first opportunity to get them ahead.

43:02Ali Krieger:The second didn't come until the 67th. It's from Pajor.

43:06Kay Murray:A bit of a deflection off the goalkeeper, unfortunate there. She couldn't parry that away, but Payor is brilliant in front of goal.

43:14Ali Krieger:And then 73rd minute, Parayuelo finishes here. That makes it 3-0.

43:19Kay Murray:This is such a brilliant ball across back posts, outside of the foot, able to get a slight deflection there, but right in the back of the net.

43:29Ali Krieger:And then Parayuelo would link up with Payor to score another here.

43:33Kay Murray:That's also tough, right, to get it out of your foot. She gets a little push from behind, but was able to put it right around the goalkeeper's side netting.

43:41Ali Krieger:4-0. And so this is what the bracket is looking like. Next up, it's Levante Badalona for Barcelona in the semifinals. On the other side of the bracket, Atletico take on Tenerife. All right, time for the top five goals. In at number five, we have got Soto from Monterrey. This is Monterrey against Toluca in Mexico.

44:05Kay Murray:We've been seeing a lot of these goals from outside the box. I would say this is about 30, 35 yards out. Unbelievable. Goalkeeper had very little chance to get her hands on this.

44:15Ali Krieger:Bring me all the goals from outside the box. I love it. Number four is where we're going to next. That was number five. What else have we got to show you? Here it is. Number four. Geraldine Cardona. For Alianza Lima. This is just a friendly game. This was a gorgeous goal.

44:33Kay Murray:A tough giveaway right in the middle of the field there at the top of the box once again. Brilliant goal, well done, great placement.

44:42Ali Krieger:We're going back to the Copa de la Reina. You've just seen some of these, there were four to choose from, but this is the one that we've picked out here. It is Paralluelo for Barcelona.

44:53Kay Murray:Once again, this is so difficult to defend when you're running back towards facing your goal, but the outside of the foot pass, back post, I mean, well done. and this was an incredible, incredible goal. Kind of gets off her, trips up a little bit, but was able to put it in the back of the net.

45:10Ali Krieger:Number two. This is Atlas against Bumas, and this is Brenda Seren. To score the goal that makes it number two in our top five.

45:19Kay Murray:Yes, receives it, back to goal, good turn, quick trigger. Great placement, once again, looks like an upper 90 there. So difficult to do at this stage.

45:30Ali Krieger:Yeah, Mexico bringing it in this top five because that's right where we're saying for number one. It is Gabriela Garcia from Club America against Cruz Azul. And this is the winning goal this week.

45:43Kay Murray:Looks like perfect weather, perfect goal. I wish we could be in the sunshine, take a little bit of the snow away. Awesome finish. Side netting, upper 90, bends it right around the keeper. Nice. There you go.

46:01Ali Krieger:Lovely little top five for you. And a goal from Barcelona in there. Now, last week we asked you, was it dripping or tripping Alexia Poteas' cleats? Since then, they've been donated to Caitlin Clark, well, gifted to her. So I'd say they're pretty much dripping.

46:16Kay Murray:They are dripping. I love the colours. I love the shine. Yeah, great choices there.

46:22Ali Krieger:Yeah, brilliant stuff. Well, that will do it for the latest edition of Football W. Thank you so much for being with us. the countdown to the opening of the NWSL is on and there is lots to keep up to date with.
