0:08Welcome to football W. She is two-time World Cup champion. Allie Krieger, Gotham champion, too. We know we're down to the wire here for NWCL, but today we're going to talk all things Women's Champions League, and we can't do it without our lovely Leanna Sanderson, who always finds a way to stay up late. Leanna, how's it going? I'm good, thanks. I think it helps. I don't know. My body doesn't know what time zone I'm on at all, so it helps. But always great to see you guys. So the tip is to keep your body confused, I think. You just have to sleep when your body's tired. That's what I heard. Yeah, exactly.

0:43Coming up, we will break down everything Barcelona and Lyonese, who are still so dominant in this Women's Champions League. Also good news because Naomi Gurma and Sam Kerr back in the starting lineup. But first, we have to talk about it was really the game of the week with what we saw between Bayern Munich and Arsenal. Let's get right to it with the action. Five minutes in, Ali. It was Beth Mead who tries to send it in, and Emily Fox puts it away. Yes, our lovely American outside back who obviously gets all the way inside the A-team, was able to finish this, put this right over the goalkeeper in the back of the net.

1:27Well done. Great start for Arsenal. Yeah, Bayern Munich defense giving it away here, and it was Mariona Caldente with another stunning goal, Ali. I mean, what a beautiful, beautiful goal. work to kind of get it out of her and then the defender wanted to close down quickly so she was able to put the ball in the back of the net. Unfortunate try here with Blackstinius putting the ball or McCabe excuse me putting the ball into Blackstinius just slightly missed right side of the post. Woulda coulda shoulda. That's what Arsenal was thinking after Bayern Munich's response here in the second half. Alara scores to put it 2-1 and they were inching closer Ali.

2:09Yeah and Buell Had a field day over there on the left-hand side. Was a part of every single goal that Bayern had. Well done. Yeah, they really did those changes to help her out as well. 80th minute per Neil Harder with the 2-2. I mean, she comes right into this game and changes it immediately. Was a huge impact, positive impact. And right here, top bins, left foot, brilliant goal. And not done yet. It was their captain, Glotis Vigo's daughter, who scores the winner. Once again, Buell serves a beautiful ball in, and she just gets her toe on it in the back of the net. I mean, Renee Slager's face just says it all because of what we saw in this match.

2:50It was practically 50-50 the whole way through, but Bayern Munich found a way and a will, especially with those changes that we saw into the second half, helping out players, of course, like Clara Buell with three assists on the night and just a dominant performance here from Bayern Munich. Let's listen to Rene Slagers now after this one with our Ben Haynes and Farah Williams. A really tough one to take out there tonight. Just explain to us where it felt like the game got away from you in the second half. Yeah, so first half is really good. I think we do a lot of really good things on the ball.

3:28I think we caused issues in their low build and a high press was working really well. Players were really disciplined when press was broken once or twice. We all worked back. Second half, we said they would probably do something different because they're 2-0 down at home and they will come out differently. So that's what they did. I think that's what changed the game in the second half. They play more of a long ball, second ball game and they stack numbers high. And we don't deal with it well enough. And it's not good enough. We don't want to concede three goals in one half in the Champions League.

3:59What were you missing in terms of that sort of maybe 75-minute mark just to wrestle back some control in the game? What was it tonight that was missing in there? Yeah, it's everything. It's making better decisions on the ball in their half to keep the ball there for longer. Because it was very transitional, it became physically demanding the game. And then if you let them play their game with the long ball in behind and the second balls, and they did that really well because they had all the numbers around, then they did that better than us. I think we lacked a little bit of energy and physicality in there in those moments.

4:34And so I think the game was played in their strengths and not in our strengths in the second half. But at the same time, we have to deal with these things because this is also football. And I know we can deal with these things, but we didn't do it well enough tonight. I mean, obviously very straightforward in what Renee Schlagers really wanted to see from her team. But Leanne, two things that really stood out for me. She says that they lacked in energy and physicality. But to you, what was the most worrying part of this mentality and practically breaking down here in the second half? As Slager said, too, we can't let them score three goals against us in one half.

5:13Before, Christian, how much I hate the saying a game of two halves, but genuinely the first half from Arsenal, it was the best Arsenal performance I've seen in a really long time, probably since the Champions League final. Defensively, on the attack, they were creating opportunities. I think for Arsenal, their substitutions seem to hinder the chemistry and upset the chemistry. And I'm not talking about the personnel, but their chemistry just wasn't there. As for Bayern Munich, the substitutions that they made, I was calling out for them during the game. Caruso came in, Penelah Harder came in, Alara came in.

5:42They scored the goals. And to me, Bayern substitutions helped. Arsenal substitutions, at times, it was an opportunity for Govind to go down the right-hand side. That happened. And Chloe Kelly was just getting pinned back. and I was really, really surprised that this happened because you look at this Arsenal team in the first half, anybody that watched this game in its entirety, you know, and Alara took this really well because I thought she overran it a little bit. The first touch, you know, Van Domsen tries to come out and I think they did a really good job and the momentum was with them. In the first half, Ball wasn't getting on the ball.

6:12Shula wasn't getting on the ball and in the second half, whatever Barcala said at half-time had a massive impact and that strike from Peniela Harder, everybody froze because they couldn't quite believe she was able to, Ali will tell you the same, you hit those nine times out of ten, they're going to Rose Ed. The fact she was able to get that on target and the momentum was with them in the second half and I just felt like the substitutions for Arsenal seemed to hinder them, the formation-wise. Mournum came into the game, Cooney Cross came into the game. I thought Pulova was really good within the game, but I don't think the substitutions from René Stegas helped.

6:42And I think this has been the story of Arsenal's season. You know, the games against Aston Villa, Manchester United, during those games, but losing to Manchester City, haven't been the greatest start to the season. Yeah, absolutely. Allie, just pointing out what Leanne said, too. Do you also look to Renee Slagers and ask why she made the changes that she made? Yeah, you do a little bit of part of that. I also think Arsenal doesn't have quite the leadership that they normally have with Leanne Williamson in the back kind of leading the charge. And then Kim Little, she does so much in the number six, right?

7:14She intercepts passes. She makes sure that the team stays connected. She dictates the play. And without that, I think they really struggled. And you could see little gaps here and there happening where Kim Little usually fills those gaps, right? And she could switch the point of attack. And she kind of just controls the rhythm. And I think because of that leadership, they're missing that. They're missing those two key players. Now, that wasn't the only cause of today, right? I think a 2-0 lead at halftime is one of the most difficult leads to continue to have. So you can't get complacent. I think they came out the second half, had no solutions for Bayern's tactical changes.

7:49and they came out and they had a plan. They started to disrupt play. They created numbers wide. Buell now then opened up and she was involved in every single goal that was created and some other opportunities that they had missed. But surprising that the slight substitutions and those slight little changes can really affect this game. And it changed for Bayern. I mean, playing in that stadium, having that energy and wanting to have that good performance for those fans to continue to come back was huge for them. So I'm happy to see that they could do that. But Arsenal, yeah, I would be worried right now if I were Renee Schlagers and making these decisions that wasn't good enough today.

8:32Yeah, absolutely, because the buying changes here, I think, especially helped Leanne, someone like Clara Buell, who in the first half, I don't want to say wasn't present at all, but just wasn't as accurate as we know her to be. and she found her supporting cast here for the second half. I mean, the changes here on the other side of Bayern Munich were really key to turn things around. But the mentality, too, as Ali said, is very worrying here from Arsenal. The lack of leadership right is one thing, but who needs to step up and say, we don't have our most important players, but we're still here?

9:04Yeah, I mean, I think there was an element of complacency, and I completely agree with what Ali said. The possession quite surprised me, because if anybody watched the first half, Bayern Munich were nowhere near at the races. They did not come out. Arsenal were high pressing. They were in a low block. And I think it is a concern for Arsenal because everybody's saying, oh, you know, Arsenal are a cup team, but they also have to perform in the WSL. They've got a massive game coming up at the weekend. You know, the next game they're playing the Champions League is a difficult one as well. And, you know, as we know, confidence, winning games will breed confidence.

9:33And I think these opportunities that we see them missing the first half, this game should have been wrapped up at halftime. It should have been three or four, with all due respect to Bayern Munich, because they did not show up. And Arsenal didn't put these chances away. We all miss. I've been there, done that. You know, we miss chances. But you have to put these away because as we know, the Champions League is very unforgiving. And I think if you was to look back on the first half, it was the best performance I've seen from Arsenal in a really long time. Second half, just capitulation and was nowhere near good enough.

10:00And I felt really disappointed in the end. Yeah, because especially of, like you both said, what we saw in the first half, it seemed to be an opportunity to go up 3-0 or even 4-0, 2 at the half. It sounds like we're exaggerating, but that's how dominant this Arsenal side was, especially Emily Fox, who had a great first half here. Allie, she had the goal, but she was constantly involved, not only on the attacking side, but when she needed to come back, she was so good at doing that, too. Yeah, she's been excellent. Obviously, I'm so happy to see her thrive, but now it has to be more consistent, right?

10:30Not only individuals can thrive and play well and have big games and big moments, but you need the team to structurally play well together in order to win on these biggest moments. You can't have the emotional fragility when you get out there in these big moments and completely crash and not really have a player who can recognize the adjustments that Bayern made and shift that in amongst the second half. You have to have a player that steps up and sees the changes, who can change in that moment rather than look to the side for the coach's opinion or advice in order to get something done in the moment.

11:10So I think there were, you know, they have to, yes, I think Emily Fox has been brilliant for Arsenal. She's now one of the first on the team sheet, right? I think, and I don't know, Leanne, if you agree with me, but on the left-hand side with McCabe, I think that is a weak link for Arsenal. I don't know if they really have a solve there yet. But I've been impressed with Emily Fox. She's getting into the attack. She's affecting the game in a positive way. Defensively, she's doing her job. 1v1s have been brilliant. But now it's just getting the team also on that same level in that consistent manner, because domestically, I don't think it's there.

11:45Right. They have to. I just want to make a point. Go ahead. Pick up on something Ali just said about Emily Fox, because I think arguably she's been one of the best Americans to ever, ever play in Europe. Like, she took to the WSL like a fish to water, genuinely. And having seen her every single week, on the flip side, Jen and Icewong is not getting a look in at all. And I feel for her. But Emily Fox has been unbelievable. And something else you said there, Ali, as well. I think in our generation of players, we knew how to problem solve on the field. We listened to our coaches. But we had the responsibility.

12:16I think now players look to the side too much. The way Bayern Munich were playing out the back in that first half, if that would have been me playing on your team, Ali, playing out from the back of the field where we're like, what are you doing? Come on. You need to get higher up the field because, you know, and that's a whole other conversation itself. But I think we were able to problem solve on the field. That's not to say I think we were better, but I think we took responsibility. And if it didn't work, you hold your hands up and off you go. Different mentality too with this new generation, Allie.

12:40Yeah, and it would happen with the national team too. So I completely agree. Like when the midfield line was higher, the fullback stepped up on Bayern and the tempo completely changed. you have to just, you have to structurally change the way you perform. You have to stay connected with the lines. You have to stay compact. You can't allow them to play through. Then, you know, Harder comes in the game and she starts defending a little bit lower, intercepting passes that, you know, were uncharacteristic of Arsenal to make those mistakes. And then they would just go transition into the attack. And that's how they created those goal-scoring opportunities.

13:13So, yeah, it's a little bit of both. But problem-solving, like Leanne said, has got to be key moving forward. From 30 for 30 podcasts.

13:28Brian Pata, senior defensive lineman from Miami. Gunned down. The key to this case, it's Brian. An hour before he died, he was on the phone arguing with somebody. This might be a hit. You want the truth. They just want a conviction. They're placed under arrest. We had a killer amongst us. Murder at the U. Listen now. Let's see if it clicked for Manchester United and PSG with more Champions League action that we saw today. We're going to take it straight into the 31st minute. This was, by the way, the homecoming of Mary Erbs for the first time that she saw Manchester United now on the other side of the ball.

14:08Melvin Mallard, though, said, welcome back, Mary. I mean, unbelievable and great ball by Riviera here on the right hand side. She just basically just nudges her off the ball, you know, physically and was able to get that shot off. Beautiful goal. Oh, speaking of beautiful goals, what do you got, Karamo? Not here, Allie. I mean, insane. I wish I would have been able to do this as an outside back. Never in my day would I have ever done, you know, shot a goal like this, but incredible side netting. Great vision by her. Yeah, no Fallon tell us Joyce, by the way. She had a knock over the weekend, so couldn't see her here.

14:4758th minute, the Man United up 2-1, a final score. But, of course, we have to hear what Fridolina Rolfo had to say after this one. Fridolina, it's another goal in the Champions League for you. It's becoming a bit of a habit. Yeah, I'm happy I can help the team. It was a good goal. I think the whole team was involved in the goal, and we played really well. and in the end Anna crossed and it was easy for me to just put my head on it so it was a nice goal. Talk to me about playing at Old Trafford tonight. Such a special moment for you players to walk out at this ground. What did it mean for you as a player?

15:24It was amazing. For me it was the first time and it was unique, you know. It's such a historical stadium and yeah, we heard the fans, they were fantastic so we enjoyed that. What did you players say to each other at full time? What was the general emotion after that game? Well, I think we were released and just happy after the end. We won the game and it was like a tough game. It was not easy today, so we were super happy and just released that we won. Congratulations and best of luck for the tournament. Thank you so much. On to some more Champions League action. She was happy. Who would be happy on this side?

16:01Barcelona. Facing Belgian side, Leuven is starting in the seventh minute. It's Aitana Bonmaty finding Vicky Lopez. Lopez sending it in. Brooks volleys the ball, but it's deflected just wide of the goal. Yes, one of the best, youngest players, youngest stars in Barcelona right now. Great way to keep this down and good volley. Penals are here for you. It was pretty close. It was pretty close. She had clips from behind, but this is when everything changed for Barcelona. They were getting frustrated, right, because they couldn't break down on that defensive structure. So I think the penalty just opened up things for them after this.

16:42Better late than never here for Barcelona. Graham on the dribble. She does it so well. And it's Kim Everett who scores that own goal. Yeah, I played with Hansen and Thierry So in Sweden. She played right in front of me as a wingback. She was brilliant. I loved giving the ball just because of these little combinations and skill work that she could do. Yeah, she does some fancy footwork really well. Irene Paredes too with the crazy header here, Alex. Yeah, I thought she had a brilliant game. Great way back post. Wasn't defended as well, but she kept it down. And that's really difficult for the goalkeeper to save.

17:16Yeah, no problems for them. Better late than never to start things off. 3-0 here for the Barcelona side. Alexia Poteas, no shocker to see her tied for top scorer here with three goals in the tournament. And, of course, they're ranking. No surprise to see them first in so many of these categories. And of course helping out Vicky Lopez and Irene Paredes. Let's listen to them after this one.

17:45Final horn turn over here.

17:54Is it difficult to focus on today's match having Madrid have been Chelsea so close, Well, I mean, we are always focused on the next game. If not, it doesn't make sense to focus on the next year's game. I mean, we have to focus on the game we have in front of us. Today was this one. I think we performed quite well. We had a lot of chances. Leuven, they defend really, really good. But we made our job, and we are happy. As they usually do, doing their job, they're happy. But Leanne, we still know that it kind of feels like Barcelona is on a revenge tour. They poked the bear. That's Arsenal's fault.

18:43They'll happily take that responsibility. But what's been the most impressive part of this Barcelona side in this hot start for you? I mean, I think the fact there was a lot of talk off the field in the offseason about the lack of finances and the young players really coming through. And I think you've only got to look at Vicky Lopez, you know, 19 years old and already kind of similar to Lili Johanes. You know, these young players that are coming through are just unbelievable. I think Alexia Puteas is cooking again, you know, after being out with that ACL injury, came back last year. Bon Mati has now won back-to-back, you know, Ballon d 'Ors.

19:14Alexia Puteas is like, I'm coming back, you know. And I said it last year. I was a bit concerned. I said, you can't have two number one singers on the team, right? And I was concerned that they wouldn't find a way to play together again. Well, they definitely have this season and they certainly look incredible. Now, Leuven didn't make it easy for them. You know, it took until the end of the first half to get that goal. And it was a penalty. I don't think it was a penalty, if I'm being honest, but it is what it is. And Barcelona just looks so formidable in this competition. From that first game against Bayern Munich, they were completely incredible.

19:44And, you know, coming up against Chelsea, again, I'm looking forward to seeing that because I think both teams at this moment in time are in a good run of form. Yeah, we'll get into that. Interesting rivalry, too, with Barcelona and Chelsea here in a few minutes. But with what we've seen from Barcelona, too, I mean, with the names that we see consistently, Ali, but still playing at such a high level like we're seeing with Alexia Putellas. But as Leanne said, of course, we usually focus on Aitana and Alexia, but they have, and I don't even want to call them supporting cast because they're such brilliant players here.

20:17Caroline Graham, to me, has been one of the most impressive parts here. What stands out the most to you about her in particular? She's just tactically brilliant. She's very technical as well. But the vision that she has and the way that she moves both on and off the ball is electric. And I saw that firsthand. I saw that in real time. I was able to play as a right back, and she was playing on the right wing with me. And we would just constantly combine. But the way that even if I played her a really difficult pass, she would make it look so good. And that it was supposed to be in that way. So I think that she is just the technical ability, the vision that she has, the willingness to go 1v1 all the time to want to create is really impressive for me.

21:05And then working with Pina and Lopez and Puteas and Bomati and Alexandre. I mean, they just have the front six that are leagues above so many other teams. And they're really well connected and their relationships are, yes, seamless. And it's really fun to watch. Yeah, and sometimes with too many stars, it can get a little bit crowded and they can get in each other's way, but they've really found a way to harmonize here. Leanne, in being one of those elements, that's one of the most important ones here for this team. We saw her have a standout game. We just heard from her, Vicky Lopez, and you mentioned the lack of finances, but to you, how important have these homegrown players been for Barcelona, which is always the theme for this club?

21:49Yeah, I mean, it's historically a thing. Even on the men's side, the academy, the Masaya has always been the top, top place, And we haven't even mentioned the fact that Payor and Paraluelo are out of injury as well. We talk about the strength in depth. But Vicky Lopez, what I love about her, she's that maverick type of player that can do things that other players can't. And that's why I compare it to, like, you know, a Lily Johannes or a Rose Lavelle. They do things when they're thinking two or three steps ahead. She's direct. She barely gives away the ball. She's always looking to either get something off, go 1v1 against defenders.

22:18She can drop into the hole into the 10. Look at the mastery on the ball. Like, she's very good on the ball. It's almost like she's using foot sales skills while she's on the pitch, like dancing on the ball, like Ronaldinho. But like it's effective. And I love watching her. And I love those types of players that you never really know. They're unpredictable in what they're doing. You never know what they're going to do. And they get everyone off their seats. Yeah, they really do. No complaints on our side too. But of course, not to remind Barcelona again how last season ended, but right now they're still coming back into this tournament as the heavy favorites.

22:53Leanne mentioned Chelsea, and we're going to take a look at how they fared yesterday. Versus St. Poulton, we have to say, it's been really tough here for St. Poulton. And they were going to try something here against Chelsea, but Naomi Gorma, Melissa Thompson, they're starting great news there for the Americans. 13th minute, though, Ellie Carpenter finding captain who scores, Allie. Yeah, Ellie is having a brilliant start to this season, and I'm so happy that now she's at Chelsea. But well done, great cutback ball there, penalty spots, really difficult to defend. Yeah, Chelsea here. We're just getting started, and so was Pat Macario, Allie.

23:28Yeah, she's looking brilliant and having such a positive impact immediately into the game. I'm so happy. Great ball by Guillermo to get this through. Once again, just slips a little combination play. Macario finishes it. I mean, the pace of Alyssa Thompson, too, on this one, trying to get it outside the box but draws a foul for a penalty. Yeah, she's definitely building confidence off of that goal over the weekend and able to get this foul and this penalty kick. And then Macario obviously does what she does best, puts the ball. simply into the side netting. She makes it look easy. Makes it look so easy.

23:58And so does Sam Kerr too with this. Just little flick to turn it around and then puts it in the back of the deck. Yeah, it's so great to see her back. She's almost fully fit. We could see these little movements are a lot sharper and sharper every time she gets out on the field. Hey, the new mom, she's glowing 86 minute. Lisa Everett for the 5 nil and yeah, the faces of the Sam Bolton players just was everything. Yeah, that's just an unfortunate that own goal once once in a lifetime kind of own goal there. And how about a brace now from Sam Kerr for the 6-0 and Chelsea with no problems here getting past St.

24:36Poulton with 6-0. But let's talk about most goals by U.S. internationals. Katerina Macario, no surprise to see her there with 14, surpassing the recently retired there. Kristen Press, Lindsay Heaps was about to score such a beautiful goal yesterday, by the way, with that set piece and Sam Mewis too. They're following it closely behind. Impressive from Kat McCarroll, which we saw there for two goals. And we had her post-match with our Ben Haynes and Josephine Henning. How did you find out there? Yeah, it was a good game, yeah. I think it was a great game for us, especially. Give us a little bit of confidence going to the next matches.

25:16And yeah, I think it was a fun one to be out there, actually. yeah, it took a lot of patience, but yeah, it was a good game. Was that the most important thing tonight? It felt like in that first half with them sitting in slightly deeper. I mean, Sonia mentioned to us before the game that you knew you were going to face a defense that was going to sit in and be difficult to break down. So it felt like when you nicked your goal on the stroke of halftime, that might be the moment just to take the momentum. Yeah, no, I think that was definitely very important. Yeah, I think they did a great job in defending, and, you know, yeah, just trying to stay compact against us, which made it even harder.

25:55But I think when we got that second goal right before halftime, then, yeah, I think that, yeah, that just gave us a little bit, you know, just a little bit more confidence to come out in the second half and just really just do our thing. And I think the game opened up a little bit more and we were just able to score more goals. What did Sonia say in the halftime? We're not leaving until six? What did you say? Something like that, yeah. No, but, you know, she knew that we have the quality, you know, to be able to break them down. That it just requires patience and it requires us playing quickly, switching the play and just working off of each other.

26:32And I think we did a great job in doing that, especially in the second half. And, yeah, thankfully, we're able to capitalize on our chances and, yeah, just score six like she wanted. And I want to talk about a hat trick of players as well. The first time you've had the full Team USA out on the pitch together tonight. How was that experience of playing together for Chelsea in the Champions League? It was special. Yeah, it was special. We've been, I mean, obviously we know each other very well. And yeah, I mean, we've been training together for a while, but to be able to do so, to play at this level and to represent Chelsea while doing so was very, very special.

27:11And yeah, I hope that we'll be able to do that for many more games to come. We hope so too because that means that Kat, Alyssa, and Naomi are injury-free, which is something that we always love to see and seeing them start here and have such a good time. But I want to start with our focus on Katerina Macario here, Allie. She's so impressive in everything she does. Just how important has she been for Chelsea's success? Yeah, she's been extremely important. Her decisiveness, her, you know, just timing, the vision that she has, just the quality. she's back to the Katarina Macario, if not better than who we saw before her injury.

27:52So coming back, it takes a while to get back into that game fitness, to get back into that confidence and that tempo specifically, and having that pace and sharpness that we were talking about with Sam Kerr, kind of just seeing now and giving her that, the opportunity to get back to who she knows she can be is amazing. And to help score goals and to create, to be dominant consistently, it's really difficult to do. And now I think we're seeing her at her best. Yeah, we truly are, Leanne, especially with the players around her too, to just kind of, it sounds weird to say, but they really allow her to play at her full potential, correct?

28:31Yeah, I think we're seeing her at best. I agree with what Ali said. It's taken her a little while. I don't think the English fans have really seen the best of Kat Macario or Naomi Gurma. I talk about them all the time. I'm always saying Naomi Gurma, for me, is the best defender in the world. And everybody's waiting to see. And now they're seeing. You know, the balls that Naomi Gurma was playing through today. She played another one to Yana Ritton, Cannery. And it was like a dream. You know, she's looking like Xavi out there. Or in the S star, playing balls. And I'm like, now people are finally getting to see.

28:58Because unfortunately for Naomi, she came over and got injured. And the same with Kat Makario. Emma Hayes brought her in. Then she got injured. But now we're finally seeing the best of Kat Makario. And she's a little bit deeper as well. And obviously in this Chelsea team, they don't keep the same 11. So there's not much consistent performances in the 11. But I will say that it's great to see Alyssa Thompson getting more of a run of games. And we can see that goal she scored at the weekend. And I love Alyssa Thompson. We all do. And I'm just delighted to see that the fans in England are getting to see these American players shining.

29:28Yeah, absolutely. You said something to me here before we came back on air about how great it must be to have those U.S. teammates, Ali, not only at the national team level, but at the club level and in a different country, different continent, but together. Yeah, I think both on and off the field, right? You have that relationship building on the field that you're so used to each other. You know exactly where you're running and, you know, what type of ball you want to play. You make each other look good. And then off the field, she has, you know, she has a friend and she has somebody who she can hang out with and they can share this new experience together, more so for Alyssa having this new experience.

30:06But, you know, kind of Kat helping her, you know, along the way and showing her the ropes. But I think just sharing that, you know, experience in the new club and just being teammates, that would have been really nice to have. You know, it worked out either way, but it would have been nice to share, you know, that experience with one of my U.S. Women's National Team teammates as well. Yeah, definitely. Here with Kat Macario, too. I'm sure with a lot of advice for Naomi Gomera coming in, being injured, Leanne. And, you know, now you're going to start, you know, be able to say, I told you so to those people who maybe doubted Naomi Gurma, but not only heard that good news to see her in the starting lineup, but Sam Kerr as well after that really tough injury that we saw.

30:49And it was crazy, actually, these numbers, 692 days since the last Women's Champions League start for Sam Kerr. I mean, obviously, it's very special to see her back and Naomi Gurma. But to you, how can Chelsea really capitalize on having these two standout players healthy and be able to start a Champions League game again? Yeah, I mean, they're game changers, aren't they, in any team? And I think for Sam Kerr, you know, it's been over two years. I think it helped when she came back against Aston Villa. She got her first goal after a couple of minutes. And I think for Naomi Germa, you know, when she came here, she got injured pretty quickly.

31:24And then her first game back was against Barcelona in the Champions League semifinal, going up against the best players. So I felt for her in that moment. But I think when you look at these two players, they would be in the starting level for any team. But this is the luxury of this Chelsea side that, you know, when they are fully fit, I have no doubt they're two of the first names that will be on the team sheet. But it's a difficult moment for Sonia Bonpastor. It's a great problem to have. A lot of coaches would love this problem. But tweaking, as we saw against FC Twenter, didn't quite work out.

31:52But it's about the chemistry of the players. And I think, you know, fair play. I agree with what Ali said about when you go to another country, and you have your fellow country people there, it makes a difference because I never had that luxury either. So I think for Naomi, Gurma, Sam Kerr, these types of players, we know the quality that they have and it's just frightening for everybody else because Chelsea win the league in the WSL consistently, but it's that one thing that's gotten away from them and that is the Champions League. I keep saying it. These players were not brought in to win the WSL.

32:21They were brought in to win the Champions League and they have to do it this year. Easier said than done. Seeing Arsenal do it last year. If I was on this Chelsea side, that would have hurt me for sure. So they have to get it done this year. Can't be any excuses. Yeah, zero excuses, especially if you have your full fit team, because maybe that was the excuses that we could even ourselves give this Chelsea side here, Ali. But it's a mission also personally for a Naomi Gurma, who can finally show what she's truly made of. Not that we ever doubted her, but that injury just really obviously limited her.

32:54Yeah, not only has the injury, you know, had limited her for a little bit. We all know she's the best defender in the world. Like Leanna mentioned earlier, that's very clear to everyone. And she deserves that. She's very consistent. She's reliable. She can also play, you know, in the six as well and dictate the center of the park. But it's also an adjustment off the field that it takes a little bit of time, right? And we have to, you know, give them a little bit more grace and a little bit more credit and making that adjustment. You can't just walk into a new team, a new culture, a new atmosphere, and a new country, right, and expect to be the best of the best.

33:34So she is, right? She is the best defender, but she deserves some time. She deserves some time, and now we're here, and she's worked through the injury. She's getting back fully fit. You know she's serious. You know she's confident, and you can count on her to show up every single moment she's allowed and given the opportunity, and she will perform to the best of her ability. What did you say, Leanne? I said, and the weather in England. It's a little bit different than Sunday, but Snapdragon. The food, the weather. Our food's good. It is good. It is good. It is good. I recently had the chance to explore that more.

34:09Listen, my brother lives in London and he can't live without his Sunday roast anymore. It is a thing. He sends us a picture every single Sunday. So hello to my brother, David. Let's move on to a little bit more Champions League action that we saw. Olympique Lyonese here versus Wolfsburg. This was supposed to be maybe a tighter game. Correct me if I'm wrong here, Allie. Lindsay Heaps, this is the free kick that I was talking about. But hey, there's Ada Hegerberg as well, to put it one no. I mean, so close. Heaps hits the post and was able to get the rebound. Well done. So they were up 1-0, 2-0 now for Hegerberg as well for Brace.

34:54And she's been brilliant. She's just a forward you can count on. She's a true 9. She has a knack for goals. She's just an impact player, creates opportunities, but then finishes chances once again here. Affects the play almost a third, but was able to get in there and do as much as she could. Unfortunately, couldn't put it in the back of the net, but it was so close. A little tug there for Melchie Dumont, who drew that foul, that penalty. 3-0, Wendy Renard, who stepped up for that one. 80th minute, though. Wolfsburg was at least going to get one back, Ali. Yeah, I mean, really great run. Obviously, so quick.

35:36The pace on that, really good timing. Oftentimes, you could be off sides of this, but she times it really well off the back shoulder and gets in behind. Yeah, absolutely. I mean, Hegerberg has just been so legendary as we know her, but that was her 69th goal. That's most in competition history. And here's what she had to say after this one. Do you think going back to the Arsenal game last season when you went out of the semi-final? Let's not talk about last season. It looks like the group has been re-motivated by that defeat. 16 games now, not just unbeaten. You've won 16 games on the bounce. looking good.

36:13Do you reckon that was kind of, you know, going out of that stage in the manner you did at home here motivated the team to be better this year? I think when you're coming from a season where you're not happy with how you perform collectively, individually, you have the opportunity to ask yourself some questions how you want to move on as a club. And I think we have been working very hard from the summer on. obviously we have some experienced players in the team who knows what it's all about it takes a lot to win the Champions League it's not a... Leon have made it look easy over the years I think actually we made it look maybe too easy and it's hard but it takes time we have a new team as well we have a lot of new players so it takes time to integrate the new players and we have a completely different staff as well so honestly it's a good start for us I think this start allows us to be more self-critical, to keep pushing, I mean, to take care of ourselves, not to go over the limits either physically because we've got to stay fit.

37:19But we're on a good start and it's very motivating for all of us. Yeah. I mean, it should be very motivating, especially when you beat a team like Wolfsburg, who is also very much used to winning this tournament here at Leanne. What kind of statement did Lyonese just make with this statement of a win? yeah they look really really good I said it was almost like a carbon copy of tonight's game with Bayern Munich versus Arsenal but then the score didn't quite add up Wolfsburg were nowhere near at the races for a minute one defensively I'd expect a little bit more now we know they're in a transition period I know Ada Hegelberg touched upon Lyon having a lot of new players but the same with Wolfsburg as well this season a lot of young players but Alexander Popp couldn't get into the game you know but I think for this Lyon team they look really good and it was almost like you You know, I was watching this team and I was thinking, this looks all too familiar.

38:12They look like Barcelona. And I'm not saying personnel-wise. I'm talking the way they were moving the ball around the field. You know, Corbin Schrader in the midfield with Lindsay Heaps and De Mournay. They were fantastic in the three, popping the ball for fun. Then Lili O 'Hannes comes into the game. Schoenga was on the bench. Totoro was on the bench. You know, they loved strength and depth, but they controlled the tempo for a minute one. Merenstein scored a fantastic goal for Wolfsburg. but I think Leon just looks really, really good and I cannot wait. I love the fact the new format, 18 teams, is allowing us to see these top teams play each other early on because I think we're seeing early on the favourites.

38:48We really are. Like, Leon look unbelievable and fair play to Jonathan Heraldis because I like him as a person but I was a little bit, you know, disappointed he left the Washington Spirit so early on. You know, I wanted to see him do a little bit more in the NWSL but I think it suits better European-style football And, I mean, he's done fantastically well in a short space of time so far. Yeah, it seems like he knows how to have that quick turnaround. We saw that momentarily with the Washington spirit. It was cut short, as Leanne said. But now here, quick turnaround, time to focus on the Women's Champions League.

39:19What's standing out to you the most at this point? Are you seeing them as a favorite as well, like Leanne is saying? Yeah, for sure. They just proved why they're the gold standard in Europe, right? In European football, they always show up every single year, even if they don't necessarily win in the semifinals finals recently. But they are proving to be one of the best in Europe. And I think they are tactically sound. They dictate the tempo. They're even in those highlights that you saw. They're so aggressive in the way and style that they want to play. Immediately transition the ball forward.

39:54They have active passing. They're breaking lines. They're always trying to look to combine, switch the point of attack. I mean, you could say all of the main principles at this level are being used and breaking teams down. And so it's really fun to see. It's great to see Lindsey and Lily and then Schrader now performing well. I hope she gets a note back to the national team because she deserves it. No matter how people feel about her, I do think she's been performing well for Lyon this season so far. and then especially yesterday was really, really impressive. So their midfield is really hard to break down.

40:36And I think their front six, like a Barcelona, are very similar, like Leanne touched on. Yeah, we saw Lili Johannes come into the game here at the back end. Leanne, to you, is she working her way to be an undisputed starter like we're seeing with Corbin Schrader? I keep wanting to call her Corbin Albert. And Lindsay Heaves. I mean, it's a difficult one because she's still a young player. and this is a difficult team to get into. Look at their bench. I just reeled off. But I think when she comes into the game, when she came in yesterday, she gave away the ball a little bit too much for my liking.

41:08But I'm okay with that because she's giving away the ball in the attacking areas. She's flicking on the outside of the foot. She's doing things that you want young players to do and to play freely. So I think, you know, it'll be quite difficult for her to break into the team right now. But I think Jonathan Raudez is managing this team in an incredible way. And I want to give a special mention to Tarsian yesterday because she was fantastic in that game. A player that people will be familiar with with the Houston Dash last season. And she was fantastic in this game. She was high up the field and she had a brilliant game.

41:38And another note, I can't believe that Hegerberg allowed Wendy Renard to take the penalty when she was on her hat trick. Because for me, if I'm on the field of play and I'm on my hat trick, I'd have a hard time giving that. Very good to be selfless in that moment. Yeah, she's so impressive, Ali. And it's tough to think what team could stop someone like Hegerberg. No, and she, you know, she made a new record yesterday, contributed to the record, and she's been super impressive. I know she was five years away from the Norwegian national team, but, you know, she's really made her stand here in Lyon, and she is an incredible forward.

42:12She's powerful, she's fierce, she's tenacious, and she wants to always get on the ball and be involved. And as a nine, that's exactly who you want in those positions. She's really good back to goal, but she's also willing to get into the box and get on the end of things. And that's just a true nine who just has a knack for goal and wants to get in good positions to score and create. Yeah, a true veteran, a true legend that we're seeing in Hagerberg still performing at such a high level. Let's take a look to Real Madrid now who had their own match against Paris FC, not to be confused with PSG. Let's take it into the 38th minute.

42:52I say that more for myself. Paris FC on the attacking now. Sheikha Scott. A lot of penalties this week that we saw in the Champions League. Right. She's able to draw the foul, and it's a penalty called immediately. The defender just, you know, doesn't slow up, just runs right through her. Yeah, Lorena Azzaro here scoring the penalty. It's 1-0. And now, 98th minute, never too late, tying the game 1-1, it's Caroline Weyer. Yeah, I mean, she's a Scottish international, well done. I think Real Madrid is definitely going to be disappointed in this draw because, you know, they were the favorites coming into this.

43:35And fortunately, they were able to score here to tie it. and well done by Caroline Weir here, who's hopefully going to captain the national team at some point. Brilliant player. Yeah, and the goalkeeper got a hand on it as well, so they were a little too close for comfort, but still getting that 1-1 puts Real Madrid in the fifth place. You're in the top 12 standing. Barcelona, Lyon, as we mentioned, Manchester United, maybe the surprise of this Women's Champions League, and Chelsea, of course, following close behind Bayern Munich, Wolfsburg and Arsenal all the way there in 11th place.

44:14UEFA Women's Champions League final is underway. Oh, it deflects in. Barcelona ahead within 35 seconds. It could be three. It is 3-0. And it's 4-0. And Chelsea were absolutely shredded. Barcelona are simply irresistible. What a semi-final we have on our hands.

44:41Caetano! For Alexia, brilliant. Claudio Fina! Oh my goodness! How good was that? Barcelona blow Chelsea away. Once again, the Spanish giants curtail Chelsea's European dreams.

45:03History on Barcelona's side just kept repeating and repeating and repeating itself, whether it was a semifinal, whether it was a final, those semifinals, by the way, on aggregate because, yeah, it wasn't an 8-2 result in just one game. But speaking of poking the bear, we know that it was for Barcelona, but maybe this could serve as motivation here for Chelsea. Leanne, I know you were itching to talk about this one because they'll meet again here next week, Thursday the 20th in the Women's Champions League. What sort of game are you expecting, especially after a Chelsea team that's been playing with so much confidence as of late?

45:42Yeah, I mean, I can't wait for this one. You know, the new format allows us to see these types of matchups, as I mentioned earlier, early in the season. And I think now is the time for Chelsea. It's a psychological thing. Ali will tell you, sometimes you go up against teams and they always get the better of you. But every single game, Barcelona have been the better team. I think you look at this season, Team selection from Sonja Bonpastor. We saw in the game, you know, Lucy Bronze is now playing centre-back. Mini Bright didn't even come into the game. Ellie Carpenter was playing down the right-hand side and she's had a fantastic start to her Chelsea career.

46:11I think she's been one of the best players in the WSL this season. So I'll be intrigued to see the team selection going into this game. And you need leaders. Ali mentioned earlier about Leah Williamson being missing from Arsenal. Lucy Bronze, those types of players are back. So I can't wait for this one. I still think Barcelona just have the edge. I think mentally, physically, tactically, individually. But I think Chelsea have to hope that Barcelona have an off day and they don't come along very often, do they? It seems to only come along in the final against Arsenal and it doesn't come along very often.

46:42So Chelsea have to hope for that. But I'm really excited for this one, as you can tell. Yeah, we're right there with you, Leanne. So excited to see this matchup. But I want to go back to the mentality that Leanne was mentioning. Will this be Chelsea's biggest obstacle when facing someone like Barcelona? Yes, I do think so, because they're playing against one of the best teams, if not the best in European football or in the world, I can say. But this is one of the best rivalries in the world. These two club teams and obviously Chelsea's in a different place this year because of the additions and also everyone's back from injury.

47:15And then, you know, Barca have the history and they have they have the trophies to prove it. So they've always performed well on on the highest stage. And I think this is going to be an exciting game. It's going to be a battle. But I'm excited to see the new Chelsea, so to speak, where you have an Alyssa Thompson, you have Sam Kerr coming back to the squad. You have Beaver Jones, also healthy and fit. And they have a full squad. So, you know, Sonia Bonpastor has a plethora of players to choose from. Now it's just what Liam was saying, how difficult it will be for her to get the players out on the team sheet.

47:54But this is always going to be an exciting match. And, you know, Chelsea's going to make Barcelona work. They're not just going to sit back in and around the 18 and park the bus. They're actually going to go after it. And, you know, you have players like Haterina McCarley, you have players like Alyssa Thompson who are going to run at your back line and make you work as well. So it's going to be really interesting and exciting for all of us to watch. Yeah, it will be so exciting to watch, no doubt. I mean, Barcelona, obviously, they're very much used to playing these type of games, especially against Chelsea here, Leanne.

48:26But what can Chelsea do to maybe control a little bit more of their destiny, not only on the mental side of the game, but tactically speaking, Sonia Bompastor may be one of her tougher games that she'll have to obviously find a way to break down this Barcelona side. Yeah, I think it'd be interesting to see if Patrick is available in that game as well, because I think she makes a massive difference. Ali made a really great point about Alyssa Thompson. She's one of those players that Barcelona haven't faced yet. She's fearless. And I think her directness will really, really help this Chelsea team.

48:57If she is in the lineup, I have a feeling that she will start within this game. And I think Chelsea just need to, you know, not park the bus. As Ali just said, they won't do that. But then they don't want to leave spaces in behind because this Barcelona team are so ruthless. Like they literally go in for the kill. They snip a little bit of kind of like, there's no sentiments with them. In other words, they are ruthless. Anyone that's had the opportunity to see them in real life, they are just unbelievable. You know, the relentlessness of them, the ruthlessness in front of goal. And I think Chelsea need to bring their game.

49:27If Chelsea can bring their game, they can get the job done. But I still feel at this moment in time, I put my money on Barcelona for this one. Yeah, I think they dominate control, like Leanne was mentioning. And then obviously Chelsea can challenge physically. But you're right. They have to be careful in the spaces in behind and stay compact and connected because you don't want to also get beat in between the lines as well, which Barcelona is so good at doing. Every pass is active or, you know, the combination play in and around the box is very, very unpredictable. So, you know, Leanne hit it right on the head.

50:01Like if Chelsea can come and bring their game and then showcase some of their new talent, I think they could have a chance. Yeah, showcase coming up next week with match day four for the Women's Champions League. I get so excited, obviously, for that matchup. but we have a plethora of great games to Juve. Facing Lyonese, Juve, who had a tough game today against Atletico Madrid. Wolfsburg facing Manchester United. Arsenal, Real Madrid, too. A very interesting one there. And Chelsea and Barcelona. We have that circled a million times on our calendar. PSG also facing Bayern Munich. All right, let's take it into our top five now.

50:44Cristina Martín Prieto here for Benfica. Leanne, she would take it practically all the way. Yeah, it's a fantastic strike. I mean, great strength, but no back lift on this one. And just pings it, comes inside. There's only one thing on her mind. Similar to Carmona coming in from the left, the goal we saw. It's such a brilliant, brilliant strike. Yeah, so impressive to kick things off. Number four, this was also great. You give her a teeny tiny bit of space, Ali, and Mariona Calente will say thank you. She was my Ballon d 'Or winner this year, actually, to be honest. But Caldente, what a player.

51:22What a strike. Just the technique. Incredible. That for number four. Let's take it into our number three in this Juventus game. Solengodo. Oh, come on, Leanne. What is that? Lovely free kick. No back lift. And these are the ones you practice on the training ground every single day. But the opportunity to be able to get that technique up and over the wall, brilliant strike. And the ball just spins so beautifully. Let's take it to number two, a thing of beauty, Olga Carmona, Ali. Yes, I used to do this all the time back in my day. What an incredible strike. Obviously couldn't get a win out of this game, but she had such a good impact in this goal, side netting.

52:09And a cool goalkeeper had absolutely no chance. That was our number two. Our number one is for Valerenga. Steen Brecken. Leanne, how about this one? Yeah, lovely goal. And a very shocked result. I think a lot of people expected Roma to win this one. But I love the little nutmeg. Directness to get towards goal. It's a fantastic strike. And to finish off this type of ball mastery and trickery with a goal, it's a thing of beauty. Fantastic strike. And fair play to Valerenga. I have to ask Ali, what were the defenders doing? They could have taken out their phone. Yeah, they look like some cheese out there.

52:46Holes everywhere. Yeah, it really was tough to see. But listen, a match day three, that left a lot. We're hoping that Vivian Miramachu is doing well. We know she had a tough knock there during the match. A bit of a scary moment. But obviously that is the top priority to see these players fully fit and ready to go. What a great show. I love talking about the Women's Champions League, especially if it's with our Leanne Sanderson and our Allie Krieger. And thank you so much for hanging out with us. Can't wait for match day four of the Women's Champions League. We will see you next time.
