In short

UEFA Women’s Champions League Matchday 5/6 fallout—Lyon’s 3-0 win over Manchester United, Barcelona’s win over Benfica, Chelsea’s 5-0 demolition of Roma, and PSG’s elimination after failing to beat Leuven.

Guests

None. Hosts are Alexis Nunes and Ali “Shoulderpads” Krieger; pitchside sound includes USA coach/analyst Lindsey Heaps (Lyon post-match), plus Barcelona voices Ben Haynes and Siobhan Chamberlain, and Chelsea/Arsenal/PSG players (Lucy Bronze, Millie Bright, Sonia Bonpastor, Beth Mead, Crystal Dunn mentioned, etc.).

Key claims

Lyon look like title contenders; their attacking duo Tabitha Chawinga and Melchie Dumourne is especially hard to defend. Barcelona remain “team to beat” despite Aitana Bonmati’s injury; Alexia Putellas missed a penalty but still led. PSG have “no identity” and were structurally disconnected, eliminated for a second straight season. Arsenal’s inconsistency is linked to missing leaders Leah Williamson and Kim Little.

Notable examples

Chawinga diving header (12’), Dumourne long-range finish (81’); Barcelona goals from Alexia Putellas’ involvement, including an own goal and a VAR-awarded penalty she missed; Chelsea goals featuring Sam Kerr and a VAR penalty; Real Madrid vs Wolfsburg red card via VAR; PSG vs Leuven chances missed leading to elimination.

0:09Hello, hello everyone and welcome into our ESPN studios for a fresh edition of Football W. I'm Alexis Nunes alongside Ali Shoulderpads Krieger. Hey, we're bringing the style, we're twinning today. Bringing the fashion tonight. We are bringing the fashion tonight because because it has been a star-studded, busy week. Today's show is all about the UEFA Women's Champions League. Some very good action, especially right as it gets down to that deadline point where we will see who gets through and who's going to fight it out in the playoffs. We're going to start off with our match of the week. And I tried to not make it this one, let me tell you, because my girls from Manchester United up against the powerhouses in the Champions League.

0:55That is Olympique Lyon starting things off in the 12th minute. Well, United are at home, but it's actually the visitors that take the lead diving header from Tabitha Chowinga. And with that last name, we know they mean business, Ali. Yeah, Tabitha Chowinga scores off this diving header. Brilliant timing right in between the two centre backs and perfect ball in the back of the net. 40th minute here, Melvin Mallard with quite the chance for Manchester United, but it just goes over the bar. Yeah, unfortunately, just goes over the net, but really, really good chance. One of the only few of the match for men United.

1:3081st minute, though. Have a look at this from Melchie Dumourne. Oh, my days. Absolute filth right in that corner where our grandmothers hang their washing. I mean, great technical ability. The footwork brand passes the ball back to Dumourne. What a shot from distance. Once again here, Diani finds Dumoury in the box for one touch shot on goal. Brilliant finish. And that is why Lyon reminded everyone who they are, dominant across all game. Yes, indeed. As Ali said, Lyon reminding everyone exactly who they are because there's a lot of talk about Arsenal, Chelsea, Barcelona when it comes to the Champions League.

2:10But Lyon actually have quite the pedigree in this competition. And let's get some post-match reaction. Here is the USA's Lindsey Heaps. Obviously, the last two goals really sealed the deal there, but it was not easy. I think United is a quality side, and obviously in the second half, I think we took a little bit of pressure. They brought on some decent players and made it very difficult for us, but we stuck in it and I think stayed together and got the next two goals, and that was important. When a team makes a triple substitution at halftime, you can always expect a different kind of threat. I noticed the manager talking to you a lot.

2:46He really gives that responsibility to manage proceedings on the pitch. What did you have to change up a little bit second half to ensure you got the win tonight? Yeah, again, just to calm things down. Obviously, when you get a little bit more pressure, you feel it. And on the ball, we needed to change a few things, maybe bringing me down a little bit earlier. And honestly, quality in the manager helps a lot because they see things and they change it right when we need to. So once we had that adjusted, I think we got more comfortable in the second half. The most important thing for this team is we take each game at a time, and I think that's the most important thing.

3:18Obviously, that's a special thing to have early on right now, but each game at a time, we want to win everything, and we want to play our way, and we want to be Lyon. So I think that was a big takeaway tonight because we stuck in it, and we got the 3-0 and kept a clean sheet, and now we move forward, and the qualification is also a cherry on top. The USA's Lindsay Heaps there ending up on the winning side. And, of course, there's a lot to talk about. Manchester United is their first time in the Champions League. We're going to get to that later on. But looking at Lyon now and this performance, Ali, I want to break it down by the goals.

3:53That first goal, though, Ingrid Engen to Tabitha Chowinga, that diving header. Why is a goal like that so hard to defend? It is because you have to keep your eye on the player and the ball at the same time. and just in that area, having a ball in swinger and then having players being able to, you know, get their head on it and be able to attack it in that, you know, area of the 18 is really difficult. So you have to be side on. You have to be touch tight. And look, she comes from the penalty spot, kind of, you know, has a really, really intelligent run here, kind of holds off, holds off, waits for it and then sees the moment where she can then dominate.

4:35and she does just that. So it was a brilliant timing. Great ball. This is a very difficult ball to play. It has to be somewhat perfect and it really is and ended up in the back of the net. So that put them off to a great start. Yeah, Falon Tolisjo is almost getting to it there but unfortunately for her and for Manchester United that was just the start of what was a dominant performance from Lyon and then just looking at Tabitha Chawinga and what she can do and then of course Dumourne. I mean those two goals, That one where I said it's where our grandmothers hang their washing. I mean, it's just class, especially from outside of the box as well.

5:10When you look at both of them there, this could be a nice new attacking strike force for Leon probably soon, if not now. Right. And their connection is coming at the perfect time. They were both outstanding and they are definite threats, you know, all over the pitch, but more so in the final third. And defenders have to keep them in their back pocket. And for me, if I were defending them, it'd be very difficult because one loves to go to feet and to be able to receive balls and turn and go at you. The other one loves to run in behind. But then they have those counter movements that's really effective.

5:46United struggle to match their tempo and the physicality. But look at this technical ability here. to be able to separate yourself in those tight spaces to get enough space to be able to hit a shot like that is really incredible. And you don't have a lot of time to do it. The timing there to get in front of the defender, to be able to hit this one-time shot in the back of the net, upper 90, brilliant. They both were outstanding today. And I think that now with Manchester United having to go and play Juve away, that's going to be a really tough task. But ultimately, we see that Lyon, they were brilliant.

6:23They were dominant across all phases of the game. And these two, building that relationship in the attack is going to be a threat moving forward. And looking there as well at Tabitha Chowinga's stats, just talk to me a bit about her impact, what she brings, why she's so hard to defend as well, because she's had a couple of loan spells. But now at Lyon, it seems like she is finding what could be a long-term home for her, where she can reap a lot of success. Yeah, I think her play is very unpredictable, right? Because as a forward, you have some players who are strictly in the nine, who just love to get in behind, love to get on the ball and have a knack for goal.

6:57What runs in the family. It does. But she has the ability to be able to come to feet, to be able to turn on a dime, to have the technical ability in tight spaces and to look to combine still, to get in better positions in front of goal. And then obviously you see her diving header. to be able to create that space for yourself and to be able to find those little spaces in order to have success in the final third. That's something that not every forward has the ability to do. So her game is super unpredictable, which I think is why she's so attractive and valuable for Lyon right now. Well, speaking of Lyon, you said it earlier on.

7:33You said Lyon just pretty much reminding everybody exactly that they are that girl, especially in the Champions League because there has been so much talk about Barcelona. We know how many times in recent years They have won it. Of course, Chelsea's always in the mix, Arsenal being the defending champions. But this is a competition that Lyon have owned, especially in the past now. So they're trying to get back to that kind of streak that we see Barcelona has been on now. When you see performances like this, you look at the table right now, they are level on points with Barcelona. They have been coming along nicely.

8:05Do you think they are back in the mix of being spoken about that highly, like the Chelsea's, like the Barcelonas, as favorites to win this? Yeah, I really do. By their outstanding performances, their dominant performances, their consistent performances at this level, that's what you need in order to be in the final and to win this title. And that's what they've shown so far. I also think that they have, you know, a new coach in place who has that ability to see the personnel and figure out the, you know, one, the formation that they want to play within that personnel that they have to choose from.

8:39And then the tactical ability and principles to be able to achieve what they can achieve. And so I do think they've made a few adjustments. They have some new players, especially a few from PSG, which we'll touch on a little bit later. later, but they have those new additions and they've been able to, you know, formulate such a quality squad that is so talented and they're getting comfortable, you know, playing at this level and also building those relationships that are really important to have that consistency at this level. So, yes, this is a team who wants to come back from that Arsenal defeat last season, last year in the same tournament, and to be able now to see it all the way through and to have those complete performances that I think were lacking last season.

9:22We saw those little moments here and there in each and every game, but when it comes down to it, when you have to win, when you have to show up and you have to complete the game, that's what I'm seeing now this year in the Champions League. And I think that they are a team who's going to match up really, really brilliantly against an incredible Barcelona who obviously has threats all over the field as well. Well, as you said, new coach who knows a thing or two about exactly what it takes to win this very competition. Indeed. All right, well, let's talk about Manchester United, shall we, guys? I don't know if you want to talk about it.

9:54But you know what? You know what? First time in the Champions League, first time really playing at this level, United coming into their own. I don't want to say that this was probably a reality check for Mark Skinner and crew. He did make five changes into the XI, leaving a lot of the big names there on the bench. Of course, this was always going to be a big test for United against Lyon, even if they went full strength, Ali. but they have already secured a playoff spot. So what would they take away from this? You know Mark Skinner very well. What do you think he'll be taking away from this performance?

10:22Yeah, I think just listening to his interview before the match saying, you know, we know who we're having to go up against, right? We either are going to get closer to where we want to be or we're going to have to climb a little bit more by the end of this game if it doesn't go the way that we want it to. And I think the little details are the physicality and the tempo. I think those two topics really stood out to me during the game, just looking at an analysis side where they didn't create too many chances and they didn't really take any of those transitional moments that they could have had and really hurt Lyon in those spaces that they could have.

10:59So I think he's going to go back to the drawing board. He's going to have to set his team up for success in a way that, you know, you have to look at the opponent, how to break them down, how to get in spaces where you can actually create problems, numbers up situations in wide areas. I do think this is the first time that they're in this tournament. So they're new, but they have that young willingness to want to fight. They have the mentality. And then there's a lot of players there who are in this developmental phase, who are willing to learn, who are willing to get better, who are willing to step up and have that confidence in these big moments because they have nothing to lose.

11:39Right. This is the first time here. And they're kind of taking it game by game. But they have had success. And now they're in, you know, have an opportunity to be in the playoffs. So I think that they're going to continue to to build off of that mentality. and they just needed to up the tempo and the physicality and I think they could have been there and they could have probably produced a little bit more in the final third. Tactically, like I said, what did you make of the substitutions? Because Mark Skinner did eventually bring on some of the bigger names like Elatoun as well, but by then you felt it was a little too late for Manchester United.

12:11I mean, Lyon were all over them. I think United only had one touch in the opposition box in all of that first half and that was that chance that we saw from Melvin Mallard that went over the bar. But what did you make of, I guess, how he tactically handled the game? Yeah, I think we tend to forget that they're playing their full season, too, right? In the WSL and their league games. And I know this is, you know, very, very important. But you have to be careful with, you know, the playing time, I think, with certain players. Because the game did change when, you know, those changes were made. And the adjustments were made.

12:43And I think that they created those chances that we started to see. And I think Leon did struggle a little bit in figuring out how to be able to defend those threats. On the other side, I think tactically he has to be here. We don't know what happens on the training field. We don't know what happens behind the scenes. Maybe, you know, there's little knocks here and there. Or, you know, he's just trying to save some players because they have had so many games already this season. I've played many minutes. So you do have to be careful in the adjustments. But once we saw that, yeah, of course, you have to play your best players.

All right, well, like I said, Olympique Lyon are sitting pretty at the top of the league table alongside the favorites.

15:11Barcelona, let's get to them, shall we? Because they took on Benfica in their Match Day 5 clash. 29 minutes in, Benfica losing the ball here. But Alexia Puteas finds Eva Payor and she scores Barca with a 1-0 lead. I mean, brilliant ball here. Just the vision and the way that they attack. Once they win the ball, they immediately go to goal. This is a result of that. Well done. 37 minutes in now. Alves here, Ana Gasper, with quite the chance there to get something for Benfica, but doesn't quite get it. Yeah, unfortunately, this is a really good chance. Well done. Great run. Great attacking ability.

15:53But unfortunate misses that. 46 minutes. Something that I don't know if Barca were expecting, but Benfica said they'll take it all day, every day. as they get an equalizer. Yeah, obviously not the best of header by Mape Leon, but she couldn't clear it and falls to Ana Gasper and then obviously to equalize. Mape Leon, maybe she's human after all, but that didn't last too long as Barcelona here benefit from an own goal. Yeah, obviously Uchebe can't clear and unfortunately scores the own goal, but this is so difficult for defenders facing their own goal. Sometimes that does happen. Oh, and then look at this one.

16:31Barca then double their lead. It looks like the replay just comes off of Alexia Puteas in the end. 71st minute. Puteas crossing the ball. It's originally saved, but there's a call for a handball in the penalty area. It's not called on the field, but the ref would then go to the VAR and says, decision penalty. Yeah, it obviously doesn't seem like it's in the correct spot, a normal position on your body. But right here, shockingly, Puteas misses this penalty. It's definitely uncharacteristic of her. Uncharacteristic of her indeed. But in the end, Barcelona completely extend their dominance in this one.

17:19As we know, they had already clinched a spot in the knockout round. And just look at those stats. 30 matches one of their last 32 at home in the Champions League. Let's get some postgame sound from our crew Ben Haynes and Siobhan Chamberlain. We created so many shots in the first half but was just 1-0 but on the end the most important thing is the three points and I think we played very well in all game and this is this is what what we want today. We have like difficult time with the players they are not in the squad because they are injured and but the young player from La Masia they they do very well job and that they they are very good and I think they played also today very well.

18:16These young players have been with us since preseason. So when they have to step up more of them now and come into the team, it's nothing new. They know the dynamics, they know what they have to do. Obviously, they also know it's a step up for them, a chance for them to show themselves. And they're doing so good in training and giving us this extra energy that we need now, when we have a lot of injuries on important players. and I think the level from these youngsters is obvious that Macias produced so many great plays and this helps us also to keep calm in this situation that we are right now.

18:50We had the was it five or six games now since last national team break and we want to finish off in a good way going to Christmas with a good feeling and both in the league in the cup and in the Champions League so we're not done yet we have three games left and we will finish strong. All right, so very happy Barcelona there. After sharing the spoils with Chelsea last time out, I don't want to say they needed a win like this, but kind of to remind everyone, like Lyon did, that they are still the favorites in this one. Yeah, for sure. I mean, Barcelona look like the most complete team in Europe as they have this entire tournament.

19:25And, you know, even listening to Caroline Graham Hansen, where she has said, even though there are injuries, There's younger players who have been performing and training with, you know, the first team for quite some time now. And that's how, you know, they just fit right in and they fill those holes immediately. And it's so impressive because they all understand the roles, the responsibilities and how they should show up and play and what is asked of them. And they can apply it immediately and directly because you don't really see too many mistakes. You don't see too many holes even though there are players who you know normally are in the starting lineup who are unfortunately injured But they are able and fully capable of filling these roles at a high level And it's really impressive to see but it's because they are consistently in training each and every day with the first team So they already understand there's what is understanding among them isn't there?

20:24They are fluid. They're confident. They're tactically sharp I think they make the game look so easy. And just the way that they have these performances where everyone has a good understanding of how to put the ball in the back of the net, what is expected, is really what separates them from the rest of the teams. I do think that they are just so, so intelligent in the style that they play, you know, wanting to get on the ball, creating space for each other, both on and off the ball, the way they move. It's really, really impressive. And I think they are obviously the team to beat this tournament.

21:06Well, we talked about it last time with Natalia. We were talking about Spain, but you can't help but talk about Barcelona when you're talking about Spain because we know exactly how that feeds the national team and a lot of their success. But Alexia Puteas, of course, we were talking about how Spain and Barcelona still very much have that X factor in Alexia Puteas. even though Aitana Bonmati, who has been that X-factor for so long, for them as well is out injured for a lengthy spell on the sidelines. But we saw two sides of Boteas here. Of course she gets the gold. It did kind of come off of her.

21:36But you know what? She'll take it all day, every day. But she did miss the penalty. And we know that there may still be some scars that need healing after what happened in the Euro final. And we saw that penalty shootout as well. But as a player that occupies two roles, I suppose, for club and country, Ali, Puteas is not only a leader, but she's also expected to perform at the highest level. Do you think there's any... Does this affect her in any way in the dressing room or going forward? No, I think each and every player has so much respect for her, and she has such quality. I mean, she does everything else, right?

22:12Even if she makes these little mistakes, it didn't cost them the game, right? And she's still going to show up and want to take that penalty kick again. And she's going to be one of the first on the list because we do know her quality. That was definitely uncharacteristic of her. That's not something that happens every day. It did, obviously, in the Euros and once again here. But fortunately, they are going to continue to move on. And she still is looked at as the leader of the team and the player that is going to carry everyone on her back and going to get the job done and create opportunities and score goals.

22:45in any other way possible, right? It doesn't always have to be at the PK spot. So she's still, you know, number one, you know, on the team sheet for them and has such quality in both how she operates on and off the field. And I think that'll never leave. And that'll always be respected no matter, you know, if she misses a PK here and there every so often. Well, Barcelona on their day, at least for me, I just have to put this out. They are definitely my favorite team to watch. I mean, when they play that style of football, they look unbeatable. But as we saw last season, they are beatable. They can be beat.

23:23We also saw last time out against Chelsea. They are capable of dropping points. Now we're seeing that they do, too, have vulnerabilities. And I think we talked about it last time that there's going to be blood in the water now that everyone's smelling with Bon Matisse injury. So looking at this Barcelona now and some of the vulnerabilities that they've shown over the last couple of weeks or the last year, Do you feel like they still can get through on that championship mentality? Or do you feel like as we get to the knockout stages, maybe other teams will know how to expose them? Yeah, I think a little bit of both.

23:56I do think that, you know, their movement and their rhythm are elite. They've been pretty much untouchable at this point. But I think that even listening to Payor and, you know, Hansen talk about other players stepping up because of the injuries. I think that gives a brilliant opportunity for a lot of players who have wanted, you know, a chance to prove themselves. And I think, you know, when you take out the best player, then sometimes that encourages the team and motivates the team to want to play better. And even even more so for that specific player like Bon Matisse. So I think they're going to want to win now, especially for her.

24:33So that kind of gives, you know, the team altogether an extra push and extra motivation to want to succeed and continue to play the football that they've been playing. But because those style and the way that they train and the way that their format is within the club system, a lot of these younger players already have the ability to just step into those positions and already feel that confidence because they've been put into that position already consistently. constantly, training after training, game after game. It's not a surprise to them. A lot of these younger players have the willingness and they want to be at that level.

25:09They want this chance. So I think it's a little bit of excitement, motivation, and maybe it makes them less unpredictable, right? When Beaumati is the center of attention and she is the engine of the team and she is the connector in midfield, she is the goal scorer, that then, once you take that out, yes, are they going to struggle a little bit in that area? Of course. But can they find other solutions? Yes. And I think that that might be a surprise now for other teams to have to figure out how they will defend against them. Because, you know, going up against a Bon Mati, you do have that ability to say, all right, if we shut her down, then we're going to shut the whole Barcelona team down in the way that they operate.

25:48But now maybe it'll be less predictable. And, you know, teams are actually going to struggle a little bit more. Shut down Barcelona, shut down Aitana Bon Mati. We all know that's easier said than done.

26:44But one team that was able to kind of shut them down a little was Chelsea last time out, but this time they went up against Roma. strong run here in the 13th minute from sandy baltimore she crosses the into the box but alas own goal and chelsea say we'll take that all day long though yeah once again own goal um unfortunately from valentina bargamashi uh yeah this is once again really tough uh defending back to goal 26th minute chelsea double their lead yeah and this time um way to keep the ball in play had the ball across the frame, someone can get on the end of it, and that's exactly what happened.

27:2844th minute now. Neem Charles linking up with Sam Kerr. The shot is saved, but Kennard manages to make it 3-0. Yeah, Sam Kerr obviously creating a lot of these opportunities. It's good to see her back in this form. Once again, Kennard was able to score off that rebound. 48th minute here. Chelsea were on the tack. Nuskin fouled in the penalty box right here. It wasn't called on the field, so of course VAR had to get involved in the decision alley. Penalty. Once again, penalty kick, but I think rightfully so. Obviously, in those situations, you want to go for the ball, and situations like this happen.

28:07Fortunately, it was in Chelsea's hands. Well, Chelsea make that 4-0, and then just a bit after, they make it 5-0. Well, well done to complete this performance here. Obviously coming off of that WSL loss to Everton, you know, that first defeat, seems like they've pulled it back together with that confidence. 86th minute, though everyone was scoring, so the veteran that is Lucy Braun said, you know what, I'm going to have a go-to and that's not a defender's goal. I wasn't sure if this was a strass or a shot, but nonetheless, I'm in the back of the net and they ended up having a great match and win.

28:42Having a great match indeed. Chelsea with an absolute beatdown of Roma here. As you can see, they added to some of the largest margins of victory in the UEFA Women's Champions League history. Well, let's get some more post-game reaction now with our pitch side crew who managed to catch up with Lucy Bronze, Millie Bright and Sonia Bonpastor. I think tonight from the players that started to the players that came off the bench, I think it was a full team performance and exactly what we expect from ourselves. Listen, it's so competitive and I think you see from the league standings in the Champs League that the points are so close.

29:18So, you know, you've got to take every opportunity that you get. And our mindset coming into these two games, weren't it, was that it's a must win for both games for us to set out our target, which was to be in the top four and get that qualification. So, yeah, first and foremost, back to the league, tough game in the league and then all eyes on Wolfsburg. The connection the players can have between them is always the most important thing. So that's why as a manager we work really hard on that because players know each other really well. But sometimes to get that connection it takes time. And I think when you change sometimes shape, when you change the players, it takes a little while sometimes to jail altogether.

29:59And I think that's the main thing for me to make sure like any time we rotate we still keep the quality and the good results. The players want to play games and when you play every three days I think we are so used to that. The main challenge is more to keep them fresh and so that's why tonight it was really good to rotate the squad a little bit. It gives the opportunity for the ones who don't get that many minutes to play and to perform and to show me they are ready to help the team but also to just give some rest to some players and tonight it was perfect in that sense because we could done both all right so west london is happy with that chelsea win let's head to north london as arsenal took on fc 20 seven minutes in caldente taking a shot on goal but it's saved but beth mead would be there to follow up but it is also saved but good chance yeah it's so great to see her back in the lineup and back playing the way that she does especially this season so well done unfortunate no goal there but good opportunity once again little footwork and this time it goes in the back of the net but technical ability to be able to get this ball out in front of her feet side netting a little deflection there all right well let's hear from the Beth Mead they're very yeah they're hard work inside they came out really well which we knew they would obviously we settled into the game we got good patterns of player there was good things it's just now that ruthlessness in front of goal which we were probably lacking a little bit of today and also then so for this uh champions league campaign it's been up and down yes yes and looking into that game next week's chance of top four would you say i mean that's the aim we've got to put three points on the table next week but we had an up and down campaign last time you know you can turn these things around and yeah we just want to finish the champions league year with a yeah with a win and put ourselves in a very good position moving forward.

31:53When you look at it, we've been really close in a lot of games. We've let ourselves down in a few moments, you know, Bayern Munich first half really, really good, second half let ourselves down. We know we can compete, it's just putting it together and you know getting them results over the line sometimes. Elsewhere in the Champions League, Real Madrid taking on a team that Ali will know very well, Wolfsburg 19th minute corner kick for Madrid and whoo! Did they expect that? I got that nice little hitter. I said, okay, Mendez. Obviously terrible defending, but nonetheless, she gets the ball in the back of the net, and they go up 1-0.

32:30Well, speaking of terrible defending here, Ali, have a look at this as Laker receives her second yellow card and then a red one for what was a pretty nasty foul. This is unfortunate because they had such a great start, and now they're having to come back and play down a player, so unfortunate for them. 67th minute, Carolyn, we're playing it off to Linda Caicedo and the Colombian with a nice goal. This reminds me of a Kristen Press run, right? Just from half field, being able to cut in front of the defender, take her out of the game, and then 1v1 versus the goalkeeper here. She does so well. Great goal.

33:09Brilliant. All right, well, have a look at this foul right here from Iris Ashley on the goalkeeper. Oh, Ali. Yeah. The referee says yellow card, but they had to go to VAR, and eventually it would be upgraded to a red. Right, decision? Yeah, I mean, this is so difficult because these are the type of balls that are really hard to defend as well, but really good for Real Madrid to get on the end of that. It just happened to really be a nasty tackle. Cleats up. Yeah, well, if you have a look at this, Carolyn Weir, I mean, she's a name that we know can do some magic when she's on the pitch right there.

33:47so far this season in the Women's Champions League. She's got five gold contributions and look at the company she is in. A massive win. We knew it was going to be a tough night. Wilswog, obviously a really good team, well-organized, physical. They made it difficult for us. Obviously, losing a player just before halftime made it even more difficult for us in the second half, but we stuck to our game plan and really proud of the team's efforts. It was difficult at times, but yeah, proud of the team. I think anything's possible in this format. I think every game is so important, every point, every goal as well.

34:25So we'll just focus on ourselves. We know going away to 20 is not easy. They're, again, another tough challenge for us, but a good one, one that we'll be looking forward to after the weekend. And yeah, we want to go out there and get a result and try and squeeze in that top four. But yeah, it's all about performance and the result and yeah, we'll work for that next week. Always great to catch up with Caroline Ware. But Ali, this is a game you wanted to get to. PSG up against Leuven. 50th minute now. PSG on the attack. Lutcher dribbling past the defender. Shoots at the gold. It's saved. There's a chance for a rebound.

35:02But it just doesn't go in. No, this is, you know, a theme, I think, for PSG. Unfortunate not to be able to put the ball in the back of the net to even get a few points. Yeah, Maurizio with a chance there from distance. but it just misses as well. Into stoppage time, a last chance as well for PSG, and they know exactly the frustration of seeing that go over the bar. Yeah, this is really difficult for a team that, you know, should have been, you know, having more points in winning games and much more successful than they've shown. Unfortunately, they couldn't get the job done and are eliminated.

35:42Could not get the job done, and there you have it. This is a look of the Champions League standings right before matchday six. As we said, Barcelona, Lyon and Chelsea looking nice in the quarterfinals as they can qualify directly there. A couple of the others like Arsenal, the defending champions, still in a spot for the playoffs. But the big story there is in the elimination column because that's where you will find PSG, which is just something that still baffles up now. Now the Parisians eliminated for the second straight season that they're going to be missing out on the knockouts. And Ali, I mean, when you came in and we were looking, going over the show, looking through our notes, you looked at me and you said, girl, PSG, they need to get their act together.

36:25What has gone so wrong for them in this? Well, I think it is a major storyline that they are already eliminated. I think it's shocking they never found their identity. They looked disconnected at times. They've struggled to create their clear chances. They obviously couldn't finish even, you know, in the final third in and around the six yard box. Weren't able to complete, you know, those those goals and put the ball in the back of the net. I think they struggled defensively. There were breakdowns and no cohesion. So it's shocking that they are already eliminated because, you know, this was a year I'm assuming a rebuild year.

37:01But a new coach had come in as well to be able to transition things into a winning way, back to the ways that they used to be. A handful of players move on to Lyon. I feel like that's kind of a theme recently for PSG. And you have a handful of players going to Lyon to be able to strengthen their squad. And they haven't necessarily been able to fill those holes yet. So it's shocking to see them at the bottom of the table. I don't think they had much luck. It's not like they can't get the job done and get points to be able to be towards the top and to be in the playoffs. But, yeah, unfortunate not to be able to win.

37:43And, yeah, I think it feels structural, not just form. I think a huge red flag for the club's project moving forward. I was going to say I kind of wanted to talk a little bit about that project because what now needs to change? I assume you're going straight to the top in terms of the admin, the board, because this is PSG at the end of the day we're talking about. And, of course, Lyon, like other big clubs, will always come and look to strengthen there. But at what point do you have to put your foot down and realize, because they had such a good run in the Champions League for about four consecutive seasons, now to go back to back without even making the knockout stages for a club like PSG, this feels like a total failure.

38:19So what needs to change and from where so that they can be whispered in the same, I suppose, conversation as the Lyons, like the Barcelonas, like the Chelsea's, or even we're talking about rebuilds. Look at Manchester United in their first timeout in the Champions League. And they're doing better than a PSG who have more pedigree in this competition. Right. And you make such a good point because you see PSG who should be, you know, towards the top of the table, who have, you know, one of the best teams in France and in all of Europe. and consistently, I mean, historically, they are one of the best.

38:50So it's really disappointing to not see them where they should be and not see them have that success. But there is no identity. They look completely disconnected. It's very individualized. There's no excitement. There's no fun. No one's smiling, laughing, having a good time, enjoying the football. You don't see that within the squad. Obviously, new coaches come in, so it does take time to be able to develop that strategy and those principles and the identity of what you want the team to or how you want the team to perform. But with a team like this, you should have enough talent to be able to bring the team together and to be able to perform with the personnel.

39:28At least at the high level. At the conversation of playoffs. Of course, and have that consistency. So you can't blame it on league play. You can't blame it on anything other than just leadership. And that comes down to getting the players that's motivated, highly motivated to want to go out there and play the way that you have that style applied. So that's not happening. And there needs to be a leadership check. There needs to be a player check to be able to hold people accountable for not being in the position that they should be in. It's quite surprising and it's really disappointing. And I think that they have to go back to the drawing board from top down to figure out where the issues lie.

40:11But the identity for me, there's, you know, when they play, there's nothing clear through an analysis that you could see that, you know, excites, excites me when I watch them. I don't think they have a good understanding of their roles and what is expected of them. And that's where you see the breakdown happen. You know, it would be great to hear from our girl, Crystal Dunn. I got to I got to ring her up. We've got to ring her off. We've got to see a little inside info. What's going on there? Well, there you have it. PSG, they will not be in contention for any of the knockout phase of this Champions League.

40:45But there's still a lot to play for on match day six. Still a lot to be decided. Here are the fixtures. Juventus up against Manchester United. As Ali said, that's going to be an interesting one. Lyon going up against Atletico de Madrid. Wolfsburg against Chelsea. That's going to be a good one. As well as for Barcelona. They will be hosted by Paris FC.

42:11We had you try to figure out a lot of scenarios here because, like I said, still a lot to play for, still a lot to be decided, especially when it comes to a certain team from North London who happen to be the defending champions. So give me your matchday six predictions. What are we seeing happening? Well, I think, you know, there's a big takeaway. The top four for me are going to stay the same. I think Barcelona, you know, Lyon are going to be at the top because of how, you know, they just look unstoppable. Chelsea sent a huge message. I think they'll stay in the top. And then Juventus, for me, is going to be, you know, the dark horse.

42:50They have been, surprisingly, they've only lost one game tied and then won three. So incredible that, you know, their performances that they've had. Arsenal are trending upward. I don't think that they're going to end up being in the top four just because of the inconsistency in their performance. Right. And maybe now when Leah back in back in the mix and then Kim Little, hopefully when she gets back to being fully fit, then she can change their way up at the top four. But we will see about that. I just think, you know, PSG's exit, United's struggles and kind of how new they are and then having to go now and play away, show the difficulty of competing consistently right now.

43:34So my top four are going to be the exact same as the way it looks now. And I think Lyon and Barcelona right now for me will get to the final. I want to piggybacking more on Juventus, but first just still sticking a pin in Arsenal because again, this is the defending champions we're talking about. And it's weird because we almost have to remind ourselves that these are the defending champions here. and you spoke about the inconsistencies. Usually when you get such a big win in the Champions League, mentally that does something wonderful for you, a team like Arsenal that have been rebuilding over the last couple of years or just building, period, to kind of be mentioned in the same breath as the Barcelonas, as the Chelsea's.

44:15They finally got that when they won last final now, but now it feels like we've taken a couple of steps back. What's going on there? Well, I think without two of your main leaders, right, Because Leah Williamson directing in the back line and then Kim Little, who has been brilliant and their captain for, you know, since 2007. Now she's been in the squad and has been their consistent leader within those those three in midfield. And obviously they had the game against Barcelona in the final last season where every single player had to perform their best in order for them to win. Right. We were it was I wouldn't say shocking, but defensively.

44:51And defensively, they had a brilliant game to create those attacking moments where then they were the ones who ended up putting the ball in the back of the net and winning the game. So it was quite a shock for Barcelona to be in that position. And then domestically, I just don't think Arsenal have been performing the way that they should be with the players that they have and the personnel that they have. But I think missing those key leaders in the spine of your team has really hurt them. You know, you can be as vocal as you want on a leader on the sideline, But, you know, when you're able to control, you know, your play and control the team's performance a little bit, being out there physically as a leader, that's so much different.

45:32And I think that that is why they've been, you know, up and down. And obviously rotations, you're having to rest players in moments where, you know, at this level, you have to do that. Just like we heard Sonia Bompastor say, you know, because of the long season, you play every three days, you need to rotate the squad. So that happens as well. And then that just provides that unpredictability and then inconsistency with the relationships that you have with the players around you on the field. So, yeah, I think a little bit of that, but mainly because I think they're two leaders who have been so consistent in the style that they play, the level that they play at, the ability that they have, the talent that they have to keep the team together and to be able to have these complete performances.

46:16That's what I think has really been missing. and yeah I think that's that's really what it boils down to obviously Beth Mead is stepping up now because last year we saw her you know in and out of the squad and she's able to you know get more playing time and she's creating a lot she's scoring goals back at you know some of the best football I've seen her play Alessia Russo is able to be you know the nine that they've been searching for with scoring goals and being able to have that knack for goals. So I don't know. We will see. I'm a little bit, because of that inconsistency and the struggles that they've had domestically, I think that's why I didn't put them in my top four for continuing in this tournament.

47:01Well, looking at the top of that top four, as it stands right now, Barcelona, Olympique Lyon, they're both level on points. Like I said, both teams have shown that they do have vulnerabilities, but then they both have that championship mentality. Nobody knows quite what it takes to win this game, even if you're having an off day. Well, not just this game, this competition, like those two teams. So who wins the top of the table? Who gets it, Ali? I think Barcelona, even though Balmati is now injured and out of the team and the squad. But I do think that they have been unstoppable. The way that they have been performing collectively, not only just as individuals, But as a group, on both sides of the ball, in the attacking phases of the game and the defensive phases of the game, they've shown true competitiveness.

47:50They've shown that quality. They've shown that consistency. And that's what you need at this level. We've said it multiple times tonight, but consistency is key and having that leadership is key. But the quality of the depth that they have, to be able to fill those holes that have now been missing with injuries and just rotations, it's really impressive. And I think that that is what's going to take you far into this tournament because of the amount of games that you have within the season. Bet against Barcelona at your own risk. Not my money, though. I know that's right. Anyways, we're going to look at the top five goals of the Champions League that we saw today.

48:28Ali's going to walk us through them in at number five. Tatiana Pinto here. Yeah, I mean, brilliant. She just steps in. Obviously, defending, you know, is very careless because she's wide open at the penalty spot. So, great, great goal here. Great finish. Nice little dummy there, though. Kept it low, the pace on that. Yeah, nice little dummy. Well, keep your eye on Juventus. Allie has said she feels like they're dark horses. Well, here's a game that we just saw the highlights for. And you loved this run, didn't you, Allie, from Linda Caicedo? Yeah, I mean, she's so young, talented. brilliant vision she had to be able to make that run, stay on sides, get the ball in behind.

49:11Beautiful ball in behind for her to be set up for this goal. Takes the goalkeeper 1v1, puts it right in the back of the net. Linda, que linda! That's what all the Colombians were shouting whenever she touched the ball at the last Women's World Cup. I managed to cover. How about this one, though, from Fiamma against Bayern, too? Yeah, I think she was even surprised that she hit this because of her reaction. Well done. Sets herself up, gets it out of her feet, and chips it right over the goalkeeper, side netting. That was an 88th minute equalizer, too. I mean, if you're going to equalize, girl, you're going to do it with style, for sure.

49:50It hits the top of the post and then goes in, fortunately. In at number two. Now, listen, I could have put this as my number one because, like I kept saying, oh, du Monet, c 'est magnifique. Yeah. I don't know if I can say much more to that, but the technical ability, the way to get it out of her feet once again, to draw the defender in, to just touch it past. Obviously, the defending, I think, could have been a little bit better in the way that she could force her facing backwards, but she does so well here. Top bins, brilliant goal. But there can only be Juan, and let me just say, you know I love me some Lucy Bronze all day, every day.

50:30I did not choose this one, but let's be honest. Did she mean for this? I mean, maybe. I don't know. I think she did see someone back post. I don't know if that was Havana or, yeah, maybe. I'm not sure. Maybe I lied about that. There was really no one running onto it. Yeah, maybe she just chipped the keeper and knew that's exactly where she wanted the ball to be. Who are we to ever question the great Lucy Bronze? As a fellow defender, did you ever try a nice little sneaky goal ever like that? We know defenders can score the odd header here and there, but ooh. Do you know what? I actually scored a Shross against at the time.

51:11It was Sky Blue. Yeah. And the NWSL. And I was playing for the Washington Spirit at the time, and I scored a Shross. And I was very, very happy because it was probably one of my only two goals I think I ever scored. Okay, shoulder pads. Okay, shoulder pads. Of course I remember. Of course you remember that. We're going to get that on YouTube or something. Surely we can. All right. Well, that's going to do it for this edition of Football W. Ali and I are going to look for some more shoulder pads, but we're going to be back next Wednesday as we look back on all the action from Match Day 6 of the UEFA Champions League.
