In short
Football W episode “Futbol W: USWNT Close Out 2025 Strong” features Alexis Nunes with Ali Krieger and guest Natalia Astrain. Topic 1: USWNT’s 2025 closeout and Emma Hayes’ development approach.
Key claims
Hayes is “a developer of talent,” raised standards, rebuilt culture/structure, and used trial-and-error; the US finished 2025 with 12 wins, 3 losses, and 43 player debuts (most since 2001).
Notable examples
vs Italy, Kat Macario scored after Lili Yohannes’ setup (20th minute) and Jaden Shaw added another (41st). Hayes says Macario’s injury recovery returned her “swagger.” Macario is praised as versatile (9/false 9/winger), scoring in three straight US matches and netting for Chelsea too. Topic 2: Spain and Barcelona. Examples: Spain beat Germany 3-0 on aggregate in the Nations League final (Madrid), with goals including Claudia Pina and Vicky Lopez, even without Aitana Bonmati. Key claim: Aitana’s broken fibula surgery means ~5 months out, a major blow to both Spain and Barcelona’s midfield engine/leadership.
Guest backgrounds
Natalia Astrain is a Spanish coach/analyst perspective; Ali Krieger and Alexis Nunes are USWNT-linked hosts.

I'm Alexis Nunes alongside the Ali Krieger, my queen always. And look who's in studio with us. We've got Natalia Astrain joining us in her very, very nice Spanish red, which is very on brand. because we're going to be speaking a lot about España after their big win over Germany, but also some bad news for Spain and Barcelona. It looks like Aitana Bonmati will be on the sidelines for a lengthy period. We're going to talk about what that means for both Spain and Barcelona. But first, we're going to kick things off with the U.S.
0:48women's national team because they were in action last night against Italia. Emma Hayes' squad came out big and strong. 20th minute now is where we pick things up. Lili Yohannes playing in the ball to Kat Makario who makes no mistake and gives the U.S. the lead. Yeah, Kat Makario just saw the keeper off her line, was able to float it over in the back of the net. I mean, she's having an incredible season, not only for the U.S. Women's National Team to finish off like this, but also with Chelsea. She's been brilliant. Yeah, you can definitely tell. And the only other person who enjoyed that more than we did was Emma.
1:23She said, have a look at that. That's my girl right there. 41st minute now, Jaden Shaw. It's not just her fits that are lit, but her goal scoring as well.
1:33Natalia Astrain:Yeah, she's amazing. And she come from scoring the semifinal as well in the NWSL. She, for me, is an incredible player, very versatile. And she's having a really good season. Well, as you can see, Emma Hayes definitely enjoyed that win from her girls. Let's hear what she had to say after the game. Thank you. Emma, congratulations on the win. As you look back at the year, one of the big things that you've kind of developed is a lot of depth around the team. How happy are you with the quality of the depth that has been produced and how do you continue that into 2026? Well, how happy are you with it?
2:08Pretty happy. I think by asking the question answers the question. And I think, look, you have to appreciate what is involved with development. and I understand like you're in the world where you have to write articles or you have to record podcasts and you have to talk about things and there's always something to talk about with this team but trust me, I'm a developer of talent. You don't do it by not playing them. You have to trial and error. You have to experiment. It's the only way you find the next level in yourself and I'm thinking about the success of our under-20s against England and our under-23s against England and now us against a top European opponent.
3:01I don't do jobs in halves and my job is to prepare for now and to prepare for later. Well, it's wild to think that we're in the last month of the year, but we can now look back at how the U.S. women's national team has done in 2025 under Emma Hayes. They finish 2025 with 12 wins, just the three losses, scored a heck of a lot of goals. And Emma Hayes gave not one, not two, not even three, but 43 players their debuts. That's the most in a year since 2001. I was just buying the Backstreet Boys' Millennium album back then. And anyways, we're seeing records tumbling, Ali. But like I said, now we can look back on it.
3:43As Emma Hayes said, this was a year where she was really trying to develop talent. She says, I'm a developer of talent. We were trying to see maybe a new identity, some fringe players come into the fore. We know competition can be so tough in the U.S. women's national team setup. So what has this year told us about the U.S.? Well, I think that the standards have been raised, right? There's some type of mentality reset, so to speak. And I think the training habits, accountability, the culture has all been just redefined and restructured in a way that now everyone has a clear mindset and they understand the principles.
4:22They understand their roles and their responsibilities. And everyone from, you know, the teenagers at 18 to the 35-year-olds really have an understanding of what is expected of them to perform well and to perform well consistently. And they do that every single game. You can see, you know, the way and the style that they perform in and the goals that they score, how they score. Defensively, I think structurally it's been so much better than when she first came in. You would see that, you know, defensively it wasn't maybe as consistent or compact. And now I feel like the defenders really have a, you know, sense of how to stay connected and really make it difficult for opponents to create opportunities.
5:14So all in all, every single line has a really good understanding of each other. and the way that they build relationships, no matter if you have had three caps or if you've had 47 caps, everyone is building relationships together, and they look happy. They look like they're having fun. And she's restored that within the women's national team. And it is competitive. It is competitive. Every player has fire underneath of them in every performance. And so that's just exciting to see. And I don't know in recent years, you know, before she arrived that that really was the case. Natalia, what have you noticed that stood out the most from this year in the development of this U.S.
5:56women's national team under Emma Hayes?
5:58Natalia Astrain:Well, I would love to start a little early when Emma Hayes arrived. I think she's doing an incredible job because when she needed to win the world medal, she got the team as a team, like as she was coaching Chelsea. Short roster, barely no subs in the Olympics, like a very short, short. She won. Okay, she got this credibility. She didn't need this credibility, but she got the credibility with the U.S. national team. I said, okay, let's go. Long term to the World Cup, to Brazil. Now is when we open the roster, when she's giving the opportunity to new players. And for me, as a coach perspective, the fact that she's calling and calling and giving this opportunity is not only empowering the player because she's um saying you she's watching you and the player when they know that they are playing good in their teams they have the opportunity to come with the national team that before was very difficult because i think that during a lot years was like the same players in the national team yeah and other thing important for me is like the teaching perspective of emma hayes she's teaching the principles to principles everybody Everybody have the opportunity to feel what she wants for the team.
7:08Natalia Astrain:Have the experience in a camp. Play with players like a Rusla Bell with this amazing player. Okay, the younger player. But then in the moment that in the future, probably she knows already what will be the player that she wants for the qualifying and the World Cup. But in case that she needs someone new, she already knows. It's not like before that someone was coming to the roster and was totally new, the panic of playing the national team with all the things that these represent the crest, right? But now with all the players having this experience and know the way the MAHs want to play, for me it's like so intelligent as a coach perspective.
7:49Ali, just remembering back at the last World Cup, of course, that we both covered, and I think I got so tired of having to ask them what is the identity of this team under Vladko? Where is the hunger? where is that kind of ruthlessness that we saw from your cycles? And the truth is now we saw what happened at that World Cup, and the truth is it just wasn't there. And now what we're seeing from Emma Hayes, you just said it feels like the U.S. is back. Back to your level when you guys were these world beaters? I think a little bit of both. I think because I was not as talented as these younger boys.
8:26Like, I could say that. All right. Come on. No, no, no. The technical ability and the vision that they have at such a young age and just the willingness to get on the ball and create really good habits is really incredible to watch. I mean, I think the mentality piece that we have is it's not better or worse. It's just different. So do I think that that could improve every single camp leading into a big tournament? Of course. And I think there's still room for that. But it's there. They have no lack of talent. That is unbelievable, the level that they're playing at. And I don't think I could even have dreamed to play at the level that they're playing at at that age.
9:12At 18, I was just trying to find matching socks to be able to perform. It just was a different time. And it's really incredible to see that she has used now, what, 43 players with purpose. Like you were saying, that it's impressive that now, even if something happens, maybe there's a risk, maybe there's an injury, maybe something happens to certain players and she's going to have to call on others to step in. Well, she now has confidence in those players because it's not the first time that they've ever been there. Yeah. So they will be comfortable. They will be confident. And they will have that consistency because she's allowed them to have that experience and to give them the opportunity to play and perform at this level for so long.
9:59I'm very impressed at how the team has come together, how they're performing now, and how they're winning. They've only lost, I think, three games this year, and that's really, really impressive. I tell you what, I'm 34 years old, and I'm still trying to find matching socks just to come here. I don't even think my socks are matching, but I tell you whose socks always seem to match. Kat Macario, she has just been brilliant for club and country. as Ali said when we watched those highlights. So let's hear what Emma Hayes has had to say about her. Hi, Lizzie Petrano from ESPN. I want to know what went through your mind during that first cat goal.
10:35I mean, we saw your celebration and your awe, but I would love to know what went through your mind. You know, probably tears. I've got so much love for that person. We have a really special relationship because of what she's gone through. so our bond is really strong. I think when you recruit players to football clubs, you go through quite a lot, so we've been through that together, but I've watched behind the scenes what she's had to endure, so I think my tears of pride, because that's the best level I've seen her since her injury. Like tonight, that was the best in terms of having her confidence back, so that's what I was celebrating was like she's got her little swagger back and that matters to her, not to me, because I always think she puts in great performances.
11:33But I saw tonight that there really is another level to her to go, in her words, not mine. And I think I know how she feels when she's in this environment, like she feels valued and seen and supported. We say this a lot in our environment, like it's not difficult. Like if you put the person first, and we always do that, I think then you get the very best out of players. And so I get a lot of satisfaction out of that. And for her, honestly, I know I say it about all of them, but I just love her to bits. well you heard it there from Emma Hayes she says this is the best she has seen Kat Macario and she's had to go through a lot especially with that horrible injury she suffered and look she closes out 2025 with a team high 8 goals 16 overall in her 29 caps and she's now scored in 3 straight games for the US so I have to ask this question Natalia now that we're looking at this Kat Macario hearing everything that Emma Hayes had to say the fact that Ali pointed out that she's not just doing well for our country She's doing quite well as well for Chelsea to bounce back from the injury that she has.
12:48When I think of some of the most talented technical players as well in the world, I'm thinking Spain. So, Natalia, from your eye as well as a coach, do you feel like Camp Macario has hit another level and gotten to the point where she can be the main focal point in attack for the U.S.?
13:04Natalia Astrain:Yeah, and I feel like we miss Sofia. We miss Trinity. We miss Triple Espresso, right? We need someone there that can fill this spot. And for me, Macario is an amazing player in two perspectives. One is because she is so versatile player. It's the kind of player that she can play as a nine, but as a false nine. She's coming, receiving between lines. She can play as a winger as well. But now, the second point is that she's recovered the best version of our scoring. because time ago she was doing really well in the game perspective but no scoring. But now we are seeing her with Chelsea as well scoring in Champions League two goals in the same game.
13:51Natalia Astrain:And I think we are seeing the best Macario scoring goals. Ali, what do you think there? Because as Natalia pointed out, there still is a triple espresso that we're missing the full components of them. But where does that leave Kat Macario when they do come back and they are fully fit? Because the way she's going, she's looking almost undroppable. Yeah, I mean, just the unpredictability of her game and the style is just restored. I think this is the best that we've seen her. I know how good she can be. I actually assisted her first goal with the USO's national team, which I'm so proud of because it was one of my only assists.
14:24And I just remember her as such a player who was willing to get better every single day and willing to learn. And you could see that she's applying that in every match that she's able to play. and she scored in the last three U.S. Women's National Team games, as we saw there. Brilliant goals. She just wants to get on the ball. She wants to create. She's so good back to goal, right? She just brings a different style than the triple espresso brings. She's not necessarily a player who's always going to run in behind. She's going to look to get the ball in defeat, kind of come a little bit deeper, and then allow the others to create in behind more often.
15:03So she just puts herself in really good positions to score goals. And I think that she's a player you can always count on. And I just pray that she always stays fit and healthy because she has been unstoppable right now. And it's so enjoyable to watch. And just like you could see how Emma Hayes appreciates and values her. And she wants her there. And she wants her to be the first player on the roster and in the squad. And it's wonderful to see that she's performing so well consistently for both club and country right now. And she looks unstoppable at the moment. She's so difficult to defend. How do you defend against her?
15:42Do you feel like defenders everywhere are going to be making her the focal point now of their attacks? Yes, I definitely would. You have to keep her in your back pocket. You have to know where she is at all times. You have to keep your head on a swivel because she's so unpredictable in the way that she moves also off the ball. She comes to feet. She can spin you. The way she uses her body. Also, like Lily Ohanas, I love the way that she uses her body and just the body shape and the way she plays can really affect the way defenders have to defend against both of those players. So you have to know where she is at all times because she can really create and be dangerous and be such a big threat.
16:22Well, we've definitely learned a lot about Kat Macario this year. But, Natalia, we were learning even more about Emma Hayes, which we thought she never ever had to prove a point, as you did point out, just the fact that her success with Chelsea spoke for itself. But everyone said it's one thing to coach a club, another thing to coach a country, and it's another thing to coach the U.S. women's national team where the expectations are just so high. And in terms of building this identity, making the U.S. her own team, tactically, what stood out to you? What kind of patterns have you seen her build that you like?
16:53Natalia Astrain:Yes, I really like Emma Hayes because she is providing a more tactical component and different plan A, B, C, D. And you see that she likes players that can play in different positions. And it's something that she was doing with Chelsea and she's implementing in the U.S. And I think this is a big step and she's doing really, really well. Other thing that I really like from her is how she cares about the individual player. So I think that the players are happy, like Ali was saying, because the players feel like Emma cares about themselves. Like, not as a player, of course, but like as an individual.
17:32Natalia Astrain:And I think when you go to the field and then you play, you feel absolutely, absolutely happy and you enjoy. And I think she provides again, it's a happiness, the players and the people we are watching. Again, we enjoy watching national team because years ago it was like, okay, we support national team and we like but now it's very different. I think that Mahesh has this intelligence. She has the perspective about coach about being professional coach demanding but she's a teacher as well and she's caring about the people. Another thing you can see always in the interviews how she talks about okay we are women's game.
18:12Natalia Astrain:We are different because years ago we were taking the data everything replicating the men's and adapting to the women and it's not it's different and seekers and now she's introducing all this data all the style of the behavior the sleeping and training that we say like uh you know resting like a food but always applying we are women yeah and this is so different and i the player when you talk with the player they oh wow emma hayes is talking all the time about that. Yeah, Emma Hayes, I keep telling her all the time that she's like that rock star cool auntie we all want. You are, Emma. You are, truly.
18:51And you heard from her. She said she's a talent developer and one other U.S. Women's National Team talent that definitely everyone has been enjoying is Lily Yohannes, and here's what Emma Hayes had to say about her as well. I want to ask you about Lily at 18 years old, the vision that she has, the passes that she makes. You know, what do you see in her and how good can she be? I mean, she's doing this at 18. I think what I've learned in all of this is you can't put a ceiling on anyone, so we won't do that. But she's 18, and all of the things that she has that are super strengths for her, we want to keep developing them.
19:34but at the same time we've got to upskill her in the things that are going to be required for the top level. And I don't mean in possession of the ball because when you play the best teams, you have to be able to recognise how to defend spaces and recognise the right moments to do certain things. And she's still learning that part of her game. That's why sometimes it's easier to play her a little bit higher in the 10 position because there's different responsibilities and, say, playing as a double six defensively. So I still think there's room to grow in that. But she's a willing student and she will watch tape all the time.
20:15And I think that's what will keep accelerating her learning is her commitment to the growth of the areas that she needs to add to be a truly world-class player. Right now she's a world-class prospect. and that there is a distinction because that bar is really, really high if we want to become the best team in the world. All right, so Emma Hayes, they're hitting us with a calma, calma. Let's not put the carriage before the horse because we are very excited about Lili Johannes and what we've seen from her at just 18 years old. We've seen her at the top level, of course, for club and now country.
20:51But she's saying that she's a world-class prospect but not quite world-class just yet, Ali. What do you make of that distinction that we probably need to read into a bit more? And what more does she need to add to her game to eventually get there? Yeah, I think that that's very true. And that's an honest statement. I think she's only 18. We have to allow these younger players and give them time to develop. That doesn't mean she's not good enough to be out there and to start every game. I think she has just unspeakable calmness. Like, it's almost untouchable the way that she sees the game and the way that she wants to get on the ball.
21:24But in such a calm, cool, collected way. And I think that her vision is so experienced in the center of the park from, you know, just being 18. The way that she sees the game is really incredible. But I do think that, you know, there could be some boxes still to check, like a defensive load, club consistency, right? She's not playing as consistent at Lyon as she should and could. I think that just game management as well and having a complete performance within that game, I think is still a few topics that she could work on, but not much. She is so talented, and I think just treating her as a person first, like Emma Hayes says, is most important.
22:07You're going to get the best out of her because you're going to build that confidence in order for her to perform the way that we all know she can. And Natalia, I'm sure you watch her as well with a coach's eye. You can't help it. So what do you think of her and her development?
22:19Natalia Astrain:my favorite player really I really like her and it's not only how she play it's the relationship that she create with the player around how she play with Macario how she play with um Rose Labelle as well or with uh so no I think she understands really well how dance with everybody and this is not a quality that everybody has you know because sometimes you have one style very define it is your style but Lily I think she's so adaptable and understand what the team needs and what the player around her need I think her soccer IQ and the way she understand the spaces she passes that no one can see she put the ball there and you see what and then you after I say ah yeah makes sense you know but she see the game like I think forward than the other people I love how Natalia described that she knows how to dance with everyone almost.
23:12The partnerships that she builds. You got to have a good dance partner. And she pointed out an interesting one too with Kat McCardio. We're seeing a nice chemistry build there, Ali. Could this be, I suppose, as they continue to develop going forward, could this be one of, if not the main kind of linkups we look at in the U.S. women's national team? For sure. I think this will define the next cycle, so to speak. I think their relationship is key, not only with the two other midfielders in the center of the park with her, But the way you connect with the forwards and the players in the front line are huge.
23:44And the way that you have your counter movements, the way you move off the ball, the way you play with deception, your vision. But I think building those relationships, especially if she's in the 10 with all three of the forwards, I think is key. And the relationship she has now with Makari, you could see just in the last game, setting her up for success, making her look good. putting these balls just on a platter for her to put them in the back of the net. You see the relationship building and gaining that quality each and every time they're out on the field together. And I think Emma Hayes obviously sees that and she recognizes that.
24:19And it also is about building relationships with the players around you and who has those good relationships in order to perform at the level that she expects you to perform at. and they are starting to have a really good connection and it's really fun to watch. And, yeah, it will define, I think, the next cycle for the tournaments ahead. Natali, how do you manage an 18-year-old like this? Because, like I said, we obviously get so excited from what we see from her. She obviously is ready to play at the world stage for club and country, probably wants to play a bit more for both, but we know we have to manage this young talent every now and again, especially when the competition is so strong within this U.S.
25:00setup. So how do you manage her going forward so that she gets to that world-class level that Emma was talking about?
25:07Natalia Astrain:I think when she plays with the national team, she has a good reference, like Ruth Lavelle, Lindsay Hibbs, and Sonnet. You have these three players around you that you can see them as a role model. I think that Emma Hayes is really intelligent as well to having this player. And I think that the point of Emma Hayes is, okay, slow them. You know, it's like she could be a good player, but let's put the hair now in her position. I think this is very intelligent for her. Probably Emma Hayes thinks that Lily Johannes is really good. But the fact that she's doing this to the media, I think help a lot to Lily.

Well, we're going to switch things up from international football a little bit and talk about some club news because we are hearing, Ali, that Jenna Naiswong is rumored to leave Arsenal during the upcoming January transfer window after what would be just one year with the Gunners. She joined them from Gotham, and she's only got five appearances to her name at the North London Club. Now, it's interesting, too, because Renee Sleckers was asked about why she's not playing as much by the Arsenal legend that is Ian Wright in one of his podcasts earlier on this year.
28:54Not just earlier on this year, but earlier on this season. And she had an interesting thing to say that it hurts nobody more to not play her than herself. But still, we're talking about Jenna here. And it's interesting because we were in Arsenal in January speaking with Foxy about her and how exciting she is, how she has that U.S. women's national team winners mentality coming from Gotham as well. So what do you think has gone so wrong at Arsenal? Why does she can't even sometimes make matchday squads? It's a huge question for me as well. Tell us the tea, Ali. Spill the tea. She has to play. To be honest, I don't think Katie McKeave is that good of a player who can't allow Jenna more minutes than she has been.
29:39She deserves to be out there and play consistently. I have seen the best of Jenna Neiswanger. I think she is an incredible talent. I think she's one of the best left backs that I've ever played with. And to see her on the bench and to not even get rostered unless somebody could be injured is not good enough. In my opinion, she needs to gain that consistency in order to gain that confidence. I think she's been mismanaged. I don't think that she has deserved this. I think that they would be remiss to not have played her because now if she moves on to wherever she goes next, they're going to be missing out and they're going to be really upset that they never gave her that opportunity to begin with.
30:25But she's been playing in multiple positions, and I think because she is versatile that they haven't really played her in one position where she can get comfortable and confident in that position in order for her to play well. So I think that's been one of the biggest mistakes. And just allow her time. It takes a lot of time for American players to go over to Europe to really get used to the culture, the new team, the environment, the rain, the food, the anything. Everything's new. So you need to give those players time. I don't think that they've given her enough. And, you know, just speaking with her, I know she's been playing well in training.
31:05And just, you know, it's upsetting that we don't see her out on the field week in and week out. Natalia, we just pulled up her stats there and just seeing how many minutes she has now in almost a year. January will make it a year since she signed with the Gunners. How much has this surprised you?
31:19Natalia Astrain:I don't know in US was the show like a expediente X, you know, the expediente X, like they happen things very random that you don't know. I think we can translate this name to the situation. I cannot understand why Jan is not playing. For me, it's a player, not only because what she did in Gotham, she was playing really well. She had the opportunity to play with the national team. She did really well. As well, I think it's a player that can fit perfectly in any team. she's a player that she will play with me all the time because you can play her as a left back but she start playing in her career a little like a midfielder and then she understands really well the pocket she is the typical fullback that can overlap underlap playing in front of the back line i think she has something extra that other fullbacks doesn't have and i don't really don't understand and why arsenal coming from win the champion league the best team in europe beating Barcelona.
32:19Natalia Astrain:This means that you are the best team. And then you don't play one of the players that can provide. Imagine folks and it's longer. You can have the planes there. Taking off there. It really is a mystery, as Natalia said. But now, of course, it sounds like she's looking to go elsewhere. Where does she go, Ali? Does she come back to the NWSL? Or do you see that she's more inclined to stay over in the UK and Europe, maybe? I do think, you know, she obviously could come back to the NWSL. Any team would be, you know, dying to have her. She could play anywhere. But she wants to continue, I think, to develop and be uncomfortable.
32:57Feels like unfinished business over there. Yeah, and not, you know, give up necessarily, so to speak. And I think that the NWSL is always going to be around for her to come back to. But I think she should stay. I think she should continue to fight for, you know, a position there within one of the teams, whether that be in the WSL or the Bundesliga or, you know, wherever in Spain or in France, anywhere to continue to develop your game. And also she knows that there's other national team, American national team players there as well that she can, you know, have a good relationship with and know that they're kind of in the same boat in order to play club and country.
33:39So I think she should stay. I would love to see her stay and see this out and really get on a team that can value her, can appreciate what she brings. And then, yeah, prove why Arsenal should have played her all along. I think if you give time and appreciation to players of her caliber, then she can give you so much in return. And I don't think they've done that. And it hasn't been good enough. And it's really sad to see because we all know how good she is. And she would benefit Arsenal so much, especially now they haven't been performing as well as they were last season. And in the Champions League final.
34:20And I think she deserves, you know, to get into some of these matches for Arsenal to change it up, to switch it up, to really try to lift the team more this season than they have shown in the past, you know, months of performing. So it's really sad, but I hope she can land somewhere where she feels valued, appreciated, and can perform the way that we all know how she can. Yeah, you got to let her cook, man. Let her cook. Because they were up against Germany in the second leg of the Nations League final. All to play for in this one. We picked things up in the 61st minute.
36:55and it's Claudia Pina with a 1-0 lead for España. Yeah, she scores with a low shot. The keeper couldn't keep it out. Brilliant by her. The pace of that side netting. Well done. Vicky Lopez, what an absolute star in the making if she's not already a star, Natalia, but she gives them the 2-0 lead.
37:15Natalia Astrain:Yeah, we were talking about the replacement of Aitana and she's saying, hey, I'm here. And it's not easy to beat Katerin Berger. It's like we are talking about one of the best goalkeepers in the world, and the three goals of Spain were from outside the balls. And Claudio Pina there with another one. Let's get some post-match reaction.
37:52Natalia Astrain:We want to ask each day to be able to be able to work hard, to be committed with the goal we have. And now one has closed. And as you know, in a few weeks, another one is to be able to go to Brazil. We're going to enjoy it today. Tomorrow we'll put our goals again, but I think we'll be able to make a mistake. we put limits. We're going to be all together with the champagne bottle, celebrating it as it is worth it, because it's very difficult to repeat again, to say that Spain is the best selection in the world, and today we're lucky to do it at home, and we're all very happy. The life and everything, and now...
38:44and you put your eyes behind and you'll find some things that have been made.
38:51Natalia Astrain:Look at the shield, look at this star, this medal and how beautiful it is. And how beautiful it is to not lose, which is the most important thing. And I'm so proud of putting the flag of Madrid to celebrate another title with the Spanish selección. All right, so no surprise. España standing on business as they tend to do. They're following up their World Cup win with yet another Nations League title. 3-0 on aggregate over Germany, which is no easy feat. All three goals coming in Madrid and all without the star that is Aitana Bonmati. We're going to talk about that a little later. But this moment is all about Natalia.
39:32As you know already, she's dressed in her Spanish red. And Spain now is a dynasty. It truly is a footballing dynasty, a powerhouse in world football. Ali knows a thing or two about being like that. They like to say it's easy to get to the top. It's harder to stay there. But Spain almost make it look so easy nowadays. It really is an untouchable dynasty, do you feel?
39:56Natalia Astrain:I don't think it's an untouchable, but I think these ladies deserve that. You know, they were really hard. And I think in Spain, they were really good like a lot of years ago, but they needed to have this successful with this championship. The World Cup, the National League, and I think it's the dessert and the best point to finish. And I think with all happened after the World Cup with all the controversial situation, Spain needed to win something in the field, on the field, like playing soccer and so in the world that, yeah, they continue being really well. Ali, do you agree as well that they look untouchable but not quite untouchable, especially when you compare them to you guys who really were untouchable.
40:37Yeah, I mean, you see how they performed in the World Cup and then you see how they performed in the Euros. Obviously, they didn't win the Euros. Maybe they should have against an English team who didn't really start out that match as well as we thought. And then they win the Nations League. So you win two huge tournaments out of the three in the past three years. And their depth is outrageous. The way that the style of play continues to grow grow and become interesting year after year. They have so many incredible players and powerhouse performances. They just deserve to be in the spot that they have a new coach now, not a new manager to bring new flair if they even need it.
41:19They have players who can they could put in any position and really count on. So it's so fun to watch the style. And I think they are building a dynasty. They have been so good in the recent performances that they played in these big tournaments. And that's when you really have to shine. And Natalia, it's interesting to hear Ali say that. Just speaking about the depth of this Spanish squad, if not dynasty that we're looking at right now, because they're not just dependent on an Alexia Puteas or Aitana Bonmatí. There seems to be many layers to this Spanish team.
41:51Natalia Astrain:Yes. I think this confirmed in the under-20s, under-17s, they are winning a lot of World Cups and in Europe as well. So they are building this identity, this way to play. And when this player play in the first team, they know how they need to play. But for me, the most important thing that highlight for the performance of Spain is how they play without ball, because Spain always feel really comfortable. And years ago, when we have the ball, we feel good. But when the team didn't have the ball, they suffer and they lose the game. And now Spain know how to suffer without the ball. And this is what we see the other day against Germany in the game.
42:33Natalia Astrain:They tied 0-0, but they were low block, defending, and managing the situation that years before was impossible. I feel like Spain is now capable to manage different moments of the game that before this was not possible. Alex, you noticed that as well, because as a defender, we all know that it's easier said than done when you're talking about a team that pretty much has perfected that style of football. but you just disrupt their passes, make them feel uncomfortable when they don't have the ball. We've seen England do it as well to them. I know, again, easier said than done, but not only layers to the Spanish squad, but maybe another layer to their game and their style.
43:07Yeah, and usually you think of Spain and how they perform in the attacking, you know, half of the field in the final third. But now, you know, they are defending. They are structurally set up to hurt you defensively and give the attack so many more chances to create opportunities in the way that they are compact, they are connected. And then they always try to play that first ball forward, which is the type of pass that you need in order to start the attack. So those transitional moments are even more dangerous than they used to be because they are focusing now more on the defensive side of the game as well, just as important as the attacking side of the game.
43:47So, yes, I'm seeing a complete Spanish team who is performing so well and so connected even without, you know, now one of their best players. Natalia, do you agree with that? Just the fact that Ali said this is a complete Spanish team. Is this the most complete Spanish team that you think we've seen?
44:04Natalia Astrain:Yes, I believe that. I think that every time they improve, another lawyer and another lawyer, and I think we are saying the best Spain team. Yeah. Yeah, it's really true that Spain just have been looking so good, which is why I say do they look untouchable? Where do they rank with you now, Ali, when we start to compare them to the Englands, to the U.S. women's national team, to the Germanys? Of course, they got the better of Germany this time around, and maybe even the Frances, et cetera, going into the next World Cup cycle. Well, I think they just have, it reminds me of the U.S. women's national team where you have these young, fearless stars coming up through the ranks, and you can really count on them because they have gained that experience over the last few years and really have been put in situations to have to perform well because they've had fire underneath of them, and they have the best players in the world around them continue to make them better every single day.
44:57And they also play for a club team who throughout their youth have a very similar style and they have an understanding of their roles and responsibilities, the way that they have to show up, the mentality, the effort it takes to play at this level consistently. And their young players, their youngest players, even teenagers have that understanding. So when they finally get to this level and they get these opportunities, they perform well. And they feel comfortable. They feel confident. They even look it to us and the fans. And that's why they have been so successful. Because even their youngest stars and the depth of their squad, you don't really notice a huge shift from the experienced players and the younger players and the stars, which is what makes a team like this so great.
45:43Natalia, when you compare Spain now, and I know you're going to be modest, but when you compare Spain now to the other countries that I just mentioned, including the usa the germany's the england's as well how big is the gap is it a lot bigger than we probably are thinking just to see spain be this dominance in the last couple of years
45:59Natalia Astrain:in comparison with other countries i think yes and now spain i think is like a truly believing in themselves like oh we are the number one in the world and we can be here it's not something that happened randomly oh casuality we won and we are but now they believe that they can be there And I feel like in Europe, the difference is a little, not very big, but I think that the style of play, and we see with Germany, the style of play probably very physical and was very hard, the first leg. But Spain has this quality. For me, the game understanding, the soccer IQ of the player in Spain is very different in comparison with other countries.
46:38Yeah, well, we've been waxing lyrical about Spain, but they didn't get through this international break unscathed. I like things my way, my coffee, my schedule, and my treatment. Bad news as it surrounds probably their biggest star, and that's Aitana Bonmati. That's a huge story around Spain and Barcelona that Aitana Bonmartie has had surgery on a broken fibula in her left leg. Barcelona confirmed the surgery and say that she will be out for about five months. That's pretty much feeling like the rest of the season. Natalia, how big of a blow is this for España as well as Barcelona?
48:00Natalia Astrain:Yeah, for me it was heartbreaking because Aitana is one of my favorite players. And for me it's like the game changer. with the Spain and with the national team and in addition Patrick Harrell Salma Paraguelo there are other players that are injured as well Osea is not only the one because you can say okay you can play with Aitana probably no it's very difficult play without her but in addition there are other players that that are injured as well so I think that this could be very difficult for Barcelona we saw the other day the game in Champions League against Chelsea was very equal and if you don't have this player.
48:35Natalia Astrain:I think that Barcelona, for me, the difference between this year and last year is the deep of the roster. And not only about number, it's about names, international names. Marione is not there. Rolfo is not there. Enger is not there. I think they miss some big players that could be impactful in the long term for the competition. Ali, this is Aitana Bonmatia. And even though we just waxed lyrical about how Spain have the depth, Barcelona may not have the depth that they did last season, but they still are Barcelona. What exactly are club and country missing now for the next five months without her?
49:11Well, yeah, it's so difficult. You're missing the best player in the world for your team. She's, you know, she's the engine of the team. Everything runs through her. She dictates the play. She dictates the tempo. She's a problem solver. I think pressing both Spain and Barcelona is going to be a little bit easier now that she's not in the squad. She's the escape valve for both teams. And a lot goes through her. She's the experienced player. She's the leader in the squad. She was in the middle of the park. She everything runs through her, whether that is the attacking part of the game, the defensive part of the game.
49:42She's involved in almost every attacking opportunity, whether she's the one who starts it or creates it or finishes it. They're really going to be missing her. But that just gives other players like a Pina and a Vicky Lopez, for example, who have performed outstanding today against Germany. That opportunity to just fill that hole and to step up a little bit more in a leadership position, whether they are young or not, they can take the reins now and really step up a little bit more, knowing that they are missing one of their key players. I know since Natalia had a little twinkle in her eye when you said it's going to be a lot easier to press Spain now because she said, hmm, so you think.
50:19But of course... We have here legend of US national team. Ali wants to get out there. She's like, let me ask Spain now. Let me ask Spain now.
50:25Natalia Astrain:They always think about, hmm, let's do a positive thing for U.S. national team. But, I mean, Ali has a huge point there because Aitana, not just, she is the engine. She's the heart of that midfield as well. And that Spanish midfield, of course, for Spain and for Barcelona is really what makes us love their style of play so well. So what kind of changes need to be made for both club and country to cope with Aitana's loss for the next five months? Well, another point that she touched that I think is really important is the leadership of Aitana. off the field. She is like the extension of the coach.
50:57Natalia Astrain:And it's really important to have this kind of player. It's a nice, the typical player that she is like a 360 all the time. Not only when she has the ball, but this trying to organize the player around. I think for Barcelona, they have like a young player and Vicky today. So I'm like, hey, I'm here. Is she ready to be that person there? I think, yes. She usually play a little more like a forward, but she can play as well in the middle. And there are another players like in the Barcelona second team that can join, of course, not her level. But yeah, I think yes. And in Spain, I think that Sonia opened the roster a little bit.
51:37Natalia Astrain:I can call some names new that I think this player are doing really well. Well, for the last couple of years, of course, we've had to speak a lot about Aitana Bon Mati for both club and country. But we forget that Spain and Barcelona still have someone called Alexia Puteas, who we know exactly what she can do. Do you see in Aitana's absence maybe more responsibility falling on her shoulders, Ali? Yeah, for sure. I mean, she's also wears a captain armband often for Spain. And she's come back in this resurgence form in recent years where she's, you know, also that leader that everyone looks to to really hold the team together and and perform well.
52:15and dictate the tempo. Her vision is unmatched, and the way that she moves off the ball as well is incredible for Spain and how they have counter-movement, how they interact and connect from midfield to the forward line. The way that they perform in the final third and create opportunities all stem from her and Aitana. And I think she just will have to step up a little bit more than she already does, but also encourage the other players to step up and perform as well as they can and as well as we all know that they can in order to fill that hole that will be almost impossible for Spain. Well, as we speak about Barcelona as well now, because when we speak Barcelona, we speak about the Champions League, and after what happened last season, you know they're going to be gunning for it again without Aitana Bonmaty for most of it now.
53:07Natalia, do you feel like this affects Barcelona's status as favorites or one of the top favorites to win it?
53:15Natalia Astrain:I would love to say no, but I will tell you yes. Wow. Yeah, because I think that Aitana is very big inside the roster for everything. We talk on the ball, off the ball, on the field, off the field. I think that the Barca have different players and younger players, but not the level of experience of Aitana. So I think that Alexia needs to do a lot more, and Vicky. Another player that we miss a lot is Mariona, that she left to join Arsenal. and I think these things will affect. I hope the recovery will be fast. You know, they say five months, and of course we want the best for her, but we want her in the field.
53:54Ali, what about you? Are they still amongst your favorites, if not the favorites, or has this Aitana lost, pegged them back a lot? No, I mean, after you see the performance today and a lot of their teammates who play for Barcelona are out on the field scoring goals left and right, I think they're going to be just fine, But I do think other teams are going to be now willing to, you know, kind of fire on all cylinders, knowing that one of their best players is not there. So they can press a little bit more and disrupt the midfield a little bit more than maybe they would normally if she were in the game.
54:27And also on the defensive side of things for opponents, maybe, you know, now it's going to be a little unpredictable. You don't know who you're going to have to take care of now that she's going to be missing. So maybe it won't be such a worry. But that doesn't mean the fact that they don't have other players who are going to fill the position like we spoke about and really get the job done and be able to perform well. Because they have so much depth. They have so many young players who can outperform anyone. So I'm looking forward to seeing other players step up. But, yes, this is going to hurt them.
54:59And it will affect them, I think, going later rounds and especially in the Champions League. Well, you heard it from Ali. We know Ali's a shark. And she's a defender. And what do sharks do? They smell blood in the water. Did you see that she's providing ideas? Oh yeah, she's already giving ideas, Ali. It's going to be easy. Come on, we need to take Ali to Barcelona.
55:18Natalia Astrain:She's like, taking notes again. First and second balls in midfield, transitional moments, intercepting passes. There's so much. Oh gosh, we're going to call Itana on the phone and let her know exactly what you're thinking. All right, well, as we said, defenders everywhere in Europe are going to be smelling some blood in Barcelona's water, but there's going to be plenty more Women's Champions League action coming your way. Here's a look at all of the fixtures for match week number five. And all of those games you can definitely watch on our networks. It's on ESPN Plus as well as ESPN Deportes. 55:56Well, that's going to be it for us here today. We're going to go listen to more tactical defensive breakdowns from Ali to see how teams can get at Barcelona. I think Natalia is going to tell her no way, but that's it. We're going to be back on December 22nd for another edition of Football W. Do not miss it. It's right before Christmas.
